As in Buffalo, no one covers the Bengals Bengals like
ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnatles Sports Station Bengals.
Speaker 4 (00:15):
ESPN gave the Bengals off season a C plus. ESPN
is also given the Reds at the midseason a C
plus as a career C plus student. It sort of
warms my heart. What's up a moegar. This is ESPN
(00:35):
fifteen thirty. Thanks for listening. I'm glad you're spending part
of your Thursday with us. Show rundowns available on Twitter

We do have some Bengal stuff to get to. We've
(00:57):
got some audio from episode four of Quarterback. I only
watched one episode last night. Tarren Binge watched the entire thing.
Stayed up till like six o'clock in the morning. I
am four episodes in. I got two pieces of audio
that I think are the two most important parts of
episode four of Quarterback. Maybe one of them is the
most important part of the first four episodes of Quarterback
(01:19):
on Netflix. We'll get to that here in just a bit.
Plus Hunter Green weirdness, we'll talk some Hell is real
and so much more. A lot of ground to cover
between now and six o'clock. And I just remembered we
have giveaways, and I have not come up with any
way to give the stuff we're giving away away, So
we may tarn be ready. We may be playing guests
the foot. We will see Yes, I know you're you
(01:42):
know what, fine, we'll do it in the five o'clock
hour today. We will play a game of guess the foot.
And I don't know if it's gonna be for Dirk
Spentley tickets or for upper Deck golf, because we have
both to give away today. But we will play a
game of guests the Foot. I might not even wait
till the four o'clock hour. The Reds win last night
and badly needed. It goes without saying last night was
(02:03):
all about Andrew Abbott. Andrew Abbott was named to the
National League All Star Team and certainly deserving.
Speaker 2 (02:09):
You know, we covered this on Monday.
Speaker 4 (02:11):
I wasn't as upset as others were at him being
excluded because I understand there's always players who are having
All Star caliber seasons who don't get in.
Speaker 2 (02:22):
That said, I would have picked him.
Speaker 4 (02:24):
I wouldn't have the stupid rule that a guy from
every team has to make the squad, and I would
have taken Andrew Abbot ahead of Matthew Boyd. But certainly
he was deserving. So he makes the All Star team.
We find that out on Tuesday, and that is great.
That is the second biggest thing that happened to Andrew Abbot,
or that Andrew Abbot accomplished this week. The most important
thing that happened with Andrew Abbott is he gave the
(02:48):
Reds seven to two thirds awesome innings last night. Admittedly
not against a great team, but hell, it's a team
that shel Nick Martinez the night before that scored twelve
runs the night before Red's needed to win that game. Like,
let's be honest, man, Like I keep coming back to
what we said on Monday. This is a huge homestand
it's a homestand that still has good potential if they
(03:09):
win today, have a five to ten game late this
afternoon because of a postgame concert. And if they sweep
the Colorado Rockies, which they should, like call it what
it is. You should sweep that team in your own stadium.
If they do that, it is a five and two
homestand you could not have a five and two homestand
if you didn't win last night. We talk all the
time about stuff like ace pitchers. Who are aces. Right,
(03:33):
It's supposed to be Hunter Green, except he's never healthy.
So this season it's become Andrew Abbott, and he's an
All Star and he's deserving. But your all star pitcher,
your ace pitcher, ends the losing streak. Like when I
think of a front of the rotation guy, I think
of a guy. If you've lost two in a row,
(03:53):
you're not losing three in a row. If you've lost
three in a row, you're not losing four in a row.
And if you've gone through an entire higher turn through
the rotation since your last start without the team winning,
you deliver a victory that day. Andrew Abbott did that.
He obviously had plenty of help, and we'll talk about
what the Reds did offensively. Homer's from Will Benson, Noel
(04:14):
j Marte, Noel j Marte, there's a really good piece
that Charlie Goldsmith wrote about Hey on a Zoos letter.
You should go and get that. But the night belonged
to Andrew Abbitt seven to two thirds out standing innings,
two oh seven is the era. Now, this team needed
him to come up big and he did. He talked
after the Reds seven to two victory last night.
Speaker 5 (04:35):
Cutter, after the first time through, how important was that
to your success tonight?
Speaker 6 (04:40):
Yeah, DJ, DJ, ME, STEVEO and DJ were sitting there.
I think it was like the third inning. We were
coming back around to the top for a second time,
and we were like looking at the at bats and saying,
how they're They're hanging over and hanging over the plate
away and we're like, hey, we need to need to
get in there, either with fastballs or cutters or something
to stand them up kind of keep them off balance.
So we just kind of shifted the game plan to that,
(05:01):
and then you know it's it started to make him
a little bit. To me, it made him look a
little uncomfortable and then kind of opened up every other avenue.
Speaker 7 (05:09):
The team needed to stop for tonight.
Speaker 5 (05:11):
Is that too much pressure to put on yourself that
you know that, Do.
Speaker 2 (05:15):
You sense that?
Speaker 8 (05:16):
No?
Speaker 6 (05:17):
I mean, it's just another game to me, you know,
I just still have to go out of stuff to perform,
still have to go execute.
Speaker 2 (05:23):
Tonight, we took the lead.
Speaker 6 (05:25):
Right off to get go, so it took a little
bit of that pressure away.
Speaker 2 (05:28):
But uh, I mean, at the end of the day,
it is a game. So you just go out and
try to do your best all the time.
Speaker 5 (05:32):
Is it satisfying that you put an exclamation point on
being chosen as an All Star tonight and and the
ovation that you got to you sense that people were
from I mean.
Speaker 6 (05:40):
Yeah, that was that was awesome. You know, I'm not
honest guy, I'm not gonna do anything crazy coming off.
So uh but yeah, I mean it it feels really
good for the you know, work that we've done in
the first half. Just continue it in the second half.
Speaker 4 (05:52):
All right, there you go. Andrew Rabbit we stold that
from the FANDUL Sports Network. You heard him talk about
Jim Day after he pitched seven and two thirds awesome
intings for the Reds last night against Miami. They badly
needed to win that game. They badly need to win tonight.
They badly. Win, need to win these next four. Just
call it what it is? Hello, what it is? I
get accused by you know some because you know yesterday
I said, well, this is who the Rads are, right,
(06:13):
this is their they're you know, middle of the pack, middling,
close to five hundred team. Uh, not bad enough to
fall totally from contention, probably not good enough to win. Well,
I want to be proven wrong, man, So start to
prove me wrong. Beat the Marlins today, win these three
against Colorado this weekend, come out of the break and
beat some better teams.
Speaker 2 (06:33):
We will see.
Speaker 4 (06:33):
Meanwhile, Chase Burns is currently occupying a spot in the
Reds rotation, and he said three starts, one has been
pretty good, one has been really good. And I'll say good,
I don't I go really, one's been pretty good, one's been good,
ones been disastrous. I don't think there's been anything to
(06:56):
dissuade us from feeling like the Chase Burns is going
to be a big part of this team moving forward
and have a really good big league career, although it's
I think obvious to most he's not yet a finished product.
So right now his spot in the rotation is gonna
come up fourteen more times. He's basically dude to make
(07:18):
thirteen to fourteen more starts because of where he is
in his career, is a rookie in his first professional
season with an innings limit. He's not gonna make all
those starts. Now, last week, you might have said that's fine,
because Hunter Green is gonna come back, and Hunter Green
is about to make a rehab start, and right after
(07:39):
the All Star break, Hunter Green is gonna take over
that spot in the rotation and then they can figure
out what they're gonna do with Chase Burns in the
short term. But you're gonna swap out Chase Burns for
a guy who was an All Star last year in
Hunter Green, a guy who, when he is healthy, is
one of the very best pitchers in baseball, A guy who,
before he started dealing with groin injuries, was having an
(08:03):
excellent season, A guy who since the end of April
last year, has at times been absolutely unhittable. Well that
that sounds awesome, except well, Hunter Green has not started
his rehab assignment. And not only has he not started
his rehab assignment, he's been sent to the spring training
(08:28):
complex I guess close to his home in Arizona, and
the manager of the team, Terry Francona, is saying, and
this is an exact quote quote, we don't really have
a roadmap. Oh okay, and so we'll have the full
(08:49):
Terry Francona quote and breakdown of Hunter Green coming up
here in just a bit. But this is pretty significant. No, Like,
he's supposed to be the staff ace when he's healthy.
He is among the best pitchers in baseball. And by
the way, like he's the one guy that they've guaranteed
money to because they locked him into a deal that's
(09:12):
going to pay him close to one hundred million dollars
if he realizes, you know, everything that that contract could
pay him for. But right now, he ain't pitching at all.
And so I guess there's a few ways to talk
about this. One is who's going to make those starts
(09:32):
when you get to a point where maybe Chase Burns
can't be used anymore if Hunter Green is not yet healthy.
I guess the obvious answer is Carson Spiers. How do
we feel about Carson Spiers getting the ball every fifth
day for a team in the middle of a playoff push, which, yes,
the Reds despite recent frustrations. Are in the middle of
(09:54):
a playoff push, When on earth are we going to
see Hunter Green again? I mean, let's be now, if
you're going well, now, they'll get him back maybe by
early August? Are we sure? And then there's just the
and this has weirdness to it, man, it just does.
Speaker 2 (10:17):
Man. Hunter Green is a likable guy.
Speaker 4 (10:20):
He's an easy guy to root for, and when he pitches,
for my money, he is must watch television. He delivered
one of the biggest starts of the years for the
year for the Reds back on that Monday night in
mid April, when they were off to a lousy start,
didn't play well in Milwaukee, and he nearly threw a
complete game against an okay San Francisco Giants team. But
(10:41):
he can't count on him, like legitimately, you can't count
on him. And that sounds harsh, but it's true. And
that's not a statement about his character. Of course, that's
not a statement about him as a person. That's not
a statement about how much he cares. It's a statement
that reflects that over the course of his career, which
(11:04):
he's in his fourth big league season, number one, he
hasn't gotten through a full big league season without going
on the injured list. Oftentimes these stays on the injured
list are rather lengthy. And he's just a guy who,
from week to week, start to start, season to season,
you just don't know. You don't know what's lurking behind
(11:24):
door number two. You don't know if the other shoe
is gonna drop, You don't know.
Speaker 2 (11:30):
And so.
Speaker 4 (11:33):
The other way to look at it is from the
standpoint of our favorite topic, which of course is the
trade deadline, which is three weeks from today.
Speaker 2 (11:41):
The Reds need offensive help.
Speaker 4 (11:42):
I think that is abundantly clear despite last night's seven
run outburst. And yeah, man, they could use some bullpen help.
But what about that spot in the rotation that's supposed
to be occupied by Hunter Green. I remember two years
ago the Reds did not address their biggest weakness because
hurt guy was gonna come back and be awesome over
(12:03):
the final two months. Hunter Green was gonna be one
of those guys that never really happened. There's just some
weirdness about this. And again, like weirdness, isn't you know
Hunter's soft? That's completely unfair. What he is is unreliable
from a health perspective because he is always unavailable. There
(12:23):
hasn't been a big league season where he hasn't gotten hurt.
And maybe he changes that next year. Maybe he changes
that over the next couple of seasons and he sheds
that reputation. But in the short term, for a team
that's trying to get to the postseason, if you're looking
at the club going well at the very least, don't
have this group of starting pitchers, and Hunter Green will
be among them, how do you do that? Your guess
(12:46):
is as good as anybody else's has to win that
guy is going to pitch this year. Maybe it's by
the end of July, certainly, hope that's the case. Maybe
it's by mid August. Okay, maybe it's sometime in September.
Maybe it's not until twenty twenty six. So what do
you do with that spot in the rotation that currently
is occupied by a guy who clearly has a.
Speaker 2 (13:10):
An innings limitation.
Speaker 4 (13:12):

might be the best fit for the Reds at the

if you're a Red stand. We'll get to that coming

Speaker 2 (14:41):
I mentioned this.
Speaker 4 (14:41):
Before really quick, the Hunter Green weirdness, and there's he
was gonna go on a rehab assignment and then not
so much, but he was still throwing in the outfield.
Speaker 2 (14:51):
They said he's had another MRI.
Speaker 4 (14:53):
It was done out of an abundance of caution, according
to Terry Francona, and they like what they saw from
the MRI. Here's here's Tito talking about Terry Francona. This
week the.
Speaker 11 (15:06):
MRI came back. We're really pleased with that. He's still
feeling it. At times, I don't know if how to
he just doesn't. I think there's not a lot of
confidence there yet. Sometimes I think it feels fatigued and
(15:27):
we want to do the right thing, and sometimes it's
very difficult. That's what we got the MRI, because you know,
you asked somebody to go out there and let it
loose and throw one hundred miles an hour.
Speaker 2 (15:38):
You don't want him worrying about something, so we're going
to take some steps to try to give.
Speaker 11 (15:44):
Him a little more time so when he does go out,
he's raring to go.
Speaker 2 (15:49):
Okay.
Speaker 4 (15:53):
I think if you're reading between the lines, it's he's
physically fine. He's not there mentally, and that's not a criticism,
that's a fair assessment. But then it's fair to wonder, well,
if he's if he's physically maybe not quite one hundred percent,
but if they like what they're seeing in the MRI
and he's physically made really good progress, how long will
(16:17):
it take for him to mentally be where he needs
to be? And if the answer is it's going to
be a while, again, what do you do with that
spot in the rotation? Completely fair question, completely fair question.
A weird situation, nonetheless five point three, seven, four, nine,
fifteen thirty. Look, man, Hunter Green is a key key
(16:40):
component to this team. The red strength is there starting pitching.
The strength of the team is not as strong if
Hunter Green is not available. Andrew Abbott has been awesome
this year. Can you just imagine, can you just imagine
for a second, like if they could go for a
stretch of time, a long stretch of time with this
year's version of Andrew Abbot and the version of hundred
(17:00):
Green we saw in the final like four months of
the season last year and before he got hurt this year.
That's as good of a one to two punch as
you can find. Unfortunately, it feels like we spend a
little bit too much time dreaming about things like that
instead of actually, you know, seeing them.
Speaker 2 (17:15):
And it's frustrating.
Speaker 4 (17:16):
Lots about this team is it's frustrating, and I'm sure
it's frustrating for one hundred green, but that doesn't make
it any less frustrating for you. And I some more
Red stuff here in a bit. I wonder if they
can repeat what they did six years ago. Actually, yes,
six six years ago. I'll make that make sense coming
(17:38):
up here in just a bit. Yesterday we talked about
how ESPN gave mid season grades for all thirty Major
League Baseball teams. The Reds got a C plus. Today
ESPN different writer. It's our buddy Seth Waterer, who was
on the show about a week ago. They gave off
season grades to the Bengals now or off season grades
to all thirty two NFL teams. And they're grades based
(17:59):
on what was done during the offseason. They're not grades
based on what your team is. They're not grades based
on things that you did last year. There are grades
based on how you have navigated the last six seven months.
Player acquisition, coaching, hires, the draft, players you let get
away all that kind of stuff. ESPN has given the
(18:21):
Bengals offseason a C plus. You can go read the
article if you want and get there rationale. What's interesting
to me about it is there wasn't that much time
spent in the assessment on what they did in free
agency or what they did in the draft. I think
based solely on the offseason, that's a fair grade. And
that doesn't mean the Bengals are necessarily going to be
(18:42):
a C plus team because they have an A list
or at quarterback. But I want to spend some time
on that today. Plus, we're gonna hold Zach Taylor accountable.
I got some Vegas odds today on the coaches most
likely to be fired during the season. Zach Taylor's odds
are very short. I'm not that interested in that. I
(19:03):
am interested in whether he will live up to a
promise I heard him make on Quarterback on Netflix last
night that coming up here in just a bit. Your
phone calls are welcome. Five one, three, seven, four, nine,
fifteen thirty. By the way, yesterday, yesterday's phone calls were
as entertaining as we've had all year long, So hopefully
we can get more of that. Sports headlines are next

Speaker 2 (20:25):
Keep that in mind.
Speaker 4 (20:26):
If you have tickets, Chances are you know this because
there's a decent chance for sticking around for the concert.
But today's game starts at five ten, five ten on
seven hundred WLW. Of course, you're not going to want
to start listening to that radio broadcast until just after
six o'clock, which I understand. Nick Lodolo and Cal Quantrell
(20:46):
are the starters starting lineup tonight for Cincinnati Friedel McLain
and Ellie one through three. Hayes's dhing batting ford than
Gavin Luck, Spencer, Steeer, hose A, Travino, Will Benson, who
homered last night, is in right field, hitting eighth, and
Noelvee Marte, who also homeward last night, is at third
base and he is batting ninth. That's what I got
(21:08):
for your local sports headlines. ESPN's Jeff Passons suggests a
best match at the trade deadline for every MLB team,
and for the Reds he has the best match being
Stephen Kwan. Stephen Kwan is a two time All Star,
(21:31):
and he's not necessarily a guy who would solve the
lack of pop problem, but he is a guy who
historically has been pretty good at getting on base. He's
hitting two ninety two this year with the Guardians. Cleveland
has fallen out of contention, recently had a ten game
losing streak. They're five hunder five hundred. The Guardians fair
(21:53):
to say, are going nowhere. He has spent basically his
entire big league career playing left field, with a little
time in center and a little time in right field.
So I don't know if Stephen Kwan is going to
be the perfect fit. I don't know if he's gonna
be the apple of Nick Crawl's eye. He's won three
Gold Gloves, so he's certainly upgrader outfield defensively, and he's
(22:16):
a two time All Star. But there's to me, there's
it's a little bit more about profile here than the
individual player, because we can get you know, sometimes I
think too deep into the weeds when it comes to
individual players. The Reds may or may not trade for,
may may or may not be interested in. But there's
a couple of things that I like about this Number One,
he's not a rental like I remember in twenty nineteen,
(22:39):
this was a jarring trade when the Reds traded Sel
Pueague for Trevor Bauer. Now, I'm gonna make this just
about baseball when it comes to Trevor Bauer, but when
they made that move, it was obviously a move designed
to help the Reds win. As many games as possible
the rest of that season. But what I think we
liked about the move was, wait a minute, they can
(23:00):
go into next year and knowing they have Trevor Bauer
at the top of their rotation, and that worked out.
He won the Cy Young Award in the shortened season.
Now what happened after that with him in Los Angeles
is kind of a different story. But also it's worth
mentioning that twenty nineteen team at the deadline was not
going anywhere. This team is at least sort of in contention.
But you know, we, I think, and we've done this
(23:23):
with a Euhenio Suarez, like he's he's a guy whose
contract is going to expire, Arizona may Bee willing to
move on. And not that you shouldn't try to get
a guy like Euanio Suarez if he is available, but
he's a rental. I do like the idea of a
guy who's not a rental who you would get for
a couple more seasons, Like there's something about that. Now
there's something about that, it's probably gonna cost more, and
(23:46):
so what are you willing to give up for a
guy like Steven Kwan. Also, when we talk about the
Reds offensively, we want more pop, right, home runs are good,
and so we talk first base, maybe a little third base,
We talk about corner outfield spots. Stephen Quants a corner
outfield guy, and he's not a guy who can't hit
the ball out of the ballpark.
Speaker 2 (24:05):
He had fourteen last year.
Speaker 4 (24:07):
But for a team that is as offensively limited as
the Reds are, that has gotten this season such little
production from the two hole, why would anybody then be
dismissive about somebody who could fill that particular role like
(24:32):
they they have. And they're kind of middle of the
pack when it comes to home runs. We ran through
all the different metrics yesterday, but they they've got a
home run problem. But they've also, more than anything, just
have an overall offensive problem. Right, They're not just not
good at hitting home runs. They're very middle of the
(24:53):
pack when it comes to just scoring runs. Stephen Kwan
is a lead offener. He's hit lead off pretty much
his entire time in Cleveland, and again, I don't want
to make this specifically about him.
Speaker 2 (25:04):
TJ.
Speaker 4 (25:04):
Friedl has fit the lead off roll fine this year.
Matt McLean call it what it is, has fallen flat
on his face hitting in the two hole. In fact,
when he has hit, he's actually done okay or had
a little surge there while he was batting eighth or
batting ninth. It feels like they have no real intention
of moving Ellie Dela Cruz from the three hole, and
there's something to be said about that. Although I certainly
(25:26):
wouldn't have any issue with Ellie Dela Cruz batting higher,
I guess the point for me is this, when you
are as deficient as the Reds are offensively, should you
be closed minded about somebody who doesn't necessarily fit the
profile of thumper, clean up hitter dude who's gonna rake
and hit thirty home runs?
Speaker 2 (25:45):
First of all, which team couldn't use a guy who
hits thirty home runs.
Speaker 4 (25:49):
Shouldn't you be open to the idea of acquiring somebody
who could help you do something that you also haven't
been very good at, which is getting on base, setting
the table, putting more eyes on for Elie Dela Cruz
and Austin Hayes and Gavin Lux. So I think this
is interesting. I have no real idea. My guess is
(26:11):
the Guardians would ship him. They've shipped away players of
similar profile in recent years. But as we talk about
like trade deadline needs, and I'm the first to admit, man,
I'm a little bit more into what the team does
tonight and this weekend and what they do in the
weeks leading up to the trade deadline, because if they
fall flat on their face, it's not gonna matter if
they buy or not. But if we're still talking about
(26:32):
them being in by mode as much as we have
made trade deadline discussion all about corner guy, dude who
can hit for some pop guy who can hit the
ball out of the ballpark, boy, it ain't like they've
been great at setting the table this year either. Would
you be adverse to like a one to two of TJ. Friedel,
(26:53):
Stephen Kwan or vice versa. I think I'd be more
than okay with that. I think the guys hitting third, fourth,
and fifth would be more than okay with that. I
wonder if Nick Crawl would be okay with that. Well,
I also wonder what it would cost. But I'm I'm
curious as to whether or not they can acquire somebody
who could help them win this year but also be
(27:15):
a piece they build around this offseason, because let's face it,
threads need two things. They need help for this year.
They also need a better team next season. Well, why
can't you solve both of those issues, or at least
help both of those issues. You're not going to solve
them necessarily. Why can't you help both of those things
at the deadline this year? Like they need both, they
(27:37):
need they need they need help this year, they need
better players for next year. One person can fit both descriptions.
Your thoughts and your thoughts on that are welcome at

I got odds on Zach Taylor being the first head

Lead over the Reds to eight games. In fact, that
game has gone final in Minneapolis. Eight won the final
score in Chicago knocks off the Twins, and one other
game happening this afternoon Baltimore, first game of a doubleheader.
Speaker 2 (29:18):
They got rained out last night, three.
Speaker 4 (29:20):
To one victory over the New York Mets, and that
is not insignificant if you look at the wild card standings,
the New York Mets occupying the top spot, tied with
the Milwaukee Brewers. After losing that game today, Cincinnati three
and a half out of the last spot, which is
currently occupied by the San Francisco Giants. I feel like
(29:42):
this has been a hectic afternoon, and I don't know why.
I don't know why. I feel like we're swimming upstream
just a little bit here. Let's take a phone call
or two.
Speaker 2 (29:52):
Mike. You're on ESPN fifteen to thirty high Mike, what's up?
Speaker 8 (29:56):
Okay, buddy, did you get the emailized this morning about Dave.
Speaker 2 (30:01):
Harper, about the one about Dave Parker?
Speaker 8 (30:03):
Yes, okay, that's I didn't. I didn't know if it's
okay to share that with the audience.
Speaker 2 (30:09):
Will you share with the rest of the class.
Speaker 8 (30:12):
Yeah, uh, most listeners, Yeah we are, of course. Dave
Parker's been on a topic the conversation lately, of course.
And uh, I just and advertantly saw not a poster.
It was just an enlarge photograph of he and Grant Jackson.
I even looked up the player's number because he was
sitting behind Dave in the in the dugout, and they're
(30:34):
both smoking a big cigarette, each one of them with
their legs crossed like they're you know, I just kicked
back in between any and throw who knows, could have
been batting practice, but I thought that was so hilarious.
It just caught me up by surprise because you don't
see photos like that very often.
Speaker 4 (30:50):
It's an iconic photo and reminiscent of a time where
it wasn't that uncommon. It wasn't necessarily common, but it
wasn't that uncommon to h to see a player or
a manager smoking in the dugout. You know Jim Leland.
When I was a kid, anytime a Pirates game would
be on, or Marlins or I guess later on Detroit,
you would you would catch him burning a heater in
the dugout. And you have that photo of Dave Parker
(31:13):
burning a heater in the dugout. I know that photo well.
Speaker 8 (31:17):
And oh gosh, mo, this kills me. I can't think
of my buddies. The Middle Eastern guy that played center
for the Lakers with the beard that he would smoke,
he smoked.
Speaker 2 (31:31):
He was not as a chain smoker.
Speaker 4 (31:33):
The Bengals once drafted a tight end and I don't
remember if it was Sean Brewer or Matt Shobel, but
there was a tight end they had who was like
the one thing he was known for was he loved
to smoke cigarettes. He's a big chain smoker. Not a
lot of big chain smokers playing tight end in the NFL.
Speaker 8 (31:52):
No, probably not. Did did you happen? Well, Stephen Kuan
out you let me see if I got this way
Red he had a chance to get Kwan and they
chose Benson right at the time, both guys were on Cleveland.
Speaker 11 (32:04):
Is that right?
Speaker 3 (32:05):
Uh?
Speaker 2 (32:07):
I have heard that. I don't know how substantial that is,
but maybe that.
Speaker 8 (32:12):
Would be interesting if he came here and they were
teammates together. I wonder if they're buddies, you know, because
I know Benson was with the Indians. I know it was. Yeah, yeah,
at least for a short amount of time. But that
would be a great acquisition if they can get to him.
But like you said, we're all just talking about it's
something to talk about. But like you said, it does
get a little monotonous after a while, because that's that's
(32:34):
all we got.
Speaker 4 (32:35):
I think, what, Well, the thing is the thing that
makes it not monotonous, But the thing that makes it
kind of frustrating is there are teams that you know
are going to be buyers, that you can spend a
lot of time having fun, which is what this is
all about.
Speaker 2 (32:51):
Having fun.
Speaker 4 (32:51):
Discussing possible, you know, acquisitions players that would make the
most sense what you would be willing to give up.
And then there are teams that are clear sellers. The
Reds are kind of in the middle. And so I
feel like, sometimes, and I'm as guilty of it as anybody,
we get a little bit too too far ahead of
ourselves talking about who they could go get at what
(33:12):
it would cost, and the pros and cons of acquiring
this guy versus this guy. When let's just say they
lose three of their next four games, then is it
gonna matter, or let's say they stumble and lose I
don't know, five out of six after the All Star break,
is it really gonna matter? I think sometimes, and again
I can be as guilty of it as anybody. We
(33:34):
spend so much time on who they may get that
we kind of lose sight of the fact that whoever
they may get on July thirty first ain't gonna help
them on July tenth.
Speaker 8 (33:45):
I like what you were, well, as you've said several times,
is how about at this time of the season, we're
not talking about needing anybody. We're good, we're pretty pat
We're ready to go into the second half.
Speaker 4 (33:55):
Or or you're just or you're just talking about how
you supplement your rey really good team. Right, Every team
needs every team can can use help. Every team is
looking to make upgrades. I mean, there's there's not a
team in the sport that Detroit Tigers, the LA Dodgers,
the Philadelphia Phillies, the Chicago Cubs, I'm sure they're all
looking at ways to upgrade their team. I think trade
(34:18):
deadline talk gets really fun when you're in it, when
your team is in a position where you know we
can go for it. We're going to be making the
playoffs or at least clearly contenders. But let's go and
add to this slight deficiency, or let's go add help here.
Speaker 2 (34:34):
That's really fun.
Speaker 4 (34:36):
I think sometimes when you're a fan of a team
like the Reds, you view the trade deadline as a savior.
You view the trade deadline as they're gonna go and
get somebody that's gonna totally remake this team. I'd like
for the Reds to one day, Mike have a team
that is so good they don't need saving, they just
need supplementing.
Speaker 2 (34:54):
On July thirty.
Speaker 8 (34:55):
First, well, it would just be so refreshing yeah, it'll happen. Well,
we keep saying that right how he was even saying
a want hey real quick? I heard something about I
didn't realize Troy Akron. He was talking about the quarterback
and that wasn't on Netflix Troy Akron. But I didn't
realize his best year, he only had twenty three touchdown
(35:17):
passes with that vaunted Emmitt Smith running attack. Twenty three
that was his max.
Speaker 4 (35:23):
That's the most that's the most amount of touchdown passes
he ever had.
Speaker 8 (35:27):
Twenty three, yep, and he had three rams. And they
were comparing him to jail On Hurts a little bit,
and they said Hurts doesn't even need or probably isn't
even capable of throwing twenty three, probably more realistically like fifteen.
Speaker 4 (35:41):
And with the way they run their offense, Mike I
got to hit the top of the hour, So thank you.
I would not have guessed that twenty three his career
only threw more than twenty in the season.
Speaker 7 (35:50):
Once.
Speaker 2 (35:50):
This is ESPN fifteen thirty. First, there was Tuesday knowledge

Speaker 4 (36:09):

I don't really entirely know what I just said. They're
more on the Reds in just a while. First Pitch
is just over an hour away. Reds and Marlin series finale,
Red's looking for a split with Nick Lidolo on the Hill.
Speaker 2 (36:32):
On the Hill.
Speaker 4 (36:35):
Quarterback, I watched on Netflix last night, the show that
NFL Films produces that does a very deep dive into
the careers, seasons, and lives of Joe Burrow, Kirk Cousins,
and Jared Goff. I watched episode four last night. I
went to the ballgame, came home. I was tired, I
(36:56):
didn't feel great. I watched the fourth episode. I went
to bed a full night's sleep for like the first
time in months. But anyway, episode four last night. This
series continues to be awesome. There are I actually have
these in my Twitter bio and I didn't know this
until like last year, but you know how like there's
(37:17):
your basic Twitter profile, your you know, your picture, your
your username, your bi so like for me, the basic
bio is kind of you know, simple. Right afternoons on
ESPN fifteen thirty also on seven hundred WLW ESPN Radio
writer when needed, Skyline, Chili fanatic, staunchly pro batflip, and
(37:38):
I believe that every person on Twitter should have how
they feel about bat flips in their profile. I really
don't follow people unless it tells us how they feel
about bat flips and anti sac bunt. I didn't realize
this until about a year ago. This might have been
a new feature, but there's an about segment that if
you click, if you click more, there's an expanded bio.
(38:00):
And so I put in certain things about me like
I wrote this. I support bat flips, hanging on the rim,
end zone celebrations, and running up the score. And I
think if you have listened to this show for any
amount of time, you know those things about me. I
like bat flips, I like it when dudes dunk and
they hang on the rim, and I don't think you
(38:21):
should get a technical foul for that. I've never thought
you should get a flag for an end zone celebration.
And I never have any sympathy when I hear someone
complaining about one team running up the score. And then
I continue in my little about section here, I don't
believe in sacrifice bunts. I don't believe in taking good
players out when they have two fouls in the first half.
(38:44):
That is maybe my biggest pet beeve. Like college basketball coaches,
good player gets two fouls with like ten minutes to
go in the first half, and they sit them for
the rest of the half. It's like, dude, he's got
two fouls, not five. I continue, I don't like kicking
the PA when you've pulled within one point in the
final seconds. I don't believe in any kind of NCAA
(39:06):
tournament expansion, and I don't believe that pitcher wins and
losses should be a stet. I actually tweeted this out
because I said I was going to reference this on
the show today, and somebody said to me, are you
turning into Lance McAllister, because the know Lance used to
do that, I believe segment every week where he played
the audio from Bull Durham with Kevin Costner, and you know,
he would talk about the things he believes in and
(39:28):
his list much lengthier than mine. And I thought, wow,
that's that's something we would be ripping off if I
wanted to rip off Lance McCallister and God knows, I've
ripped off him enough, so.
Speaker 2 (39:37):
No, we're not doing that.
Speaker 4 (39:38):
But the reason why I bring this up is I'm
watching Quarterback last night and they kind of take you
game by game through each Quarterback season, the Three Guys
Day Profile and episode four. A big part of it
was Joe Burrow and the Bengals the second game against
the Baltimore Ravens, which was a great game unfortunately lost
(40:02):
by the road team thirty five to thirty four. One
of the very best games of the entire twenty twenty
four season, and you might remember that game. The Bengals
are down seven with minute and a half to go,
a little bit more than a minute and a half
to go, and they go down the field and Joe
Burrow throws a touchdown pass to Jamar Chase that pulls
(40:22):
the Bengals within one, and then the Bengals decide to
go for two and they don't successfully convert the two
point conversion. Quarterback could have done a better job of
highlighting how there were multiple Ravens penalties on the play
that did not get flagged. Nonetheless, they go for two,
they don't kick the pat. Had they kicked the pat
(40:45):
obviously there was no guarantee that the game was going
to go to overtime, but they kicked the pat and
they're playing for overtime. Instead, they played to take the
lead and then ask the defense to get a stop.
They may have converted the two point conversion, and then
with that defense that night, there's a very good chance
they wouldn't have gotten to stop. But I am a
staunch believer in this, and I have been for a while,
(41:09):
going back to twenty fourteen, actually another Bengals Ravens game,
because I got yelled at on this show Bengals. If
you remember that day, Andy Dalton threw a hail Mary
pass to AJ Green. It pulled them within a score
and Marvin Lewis chose to kick the pat. The pat
(41:30):
was successful, the Bengals never touched the football again. They lose,
and I remember watching that game at the Holy Ground
screaming at the television Marv go for two, and at
the bar people yelled at me and then on I
was doing the show on Mondays at the time with
Rocky Boyman, God love Rocky. It was the Rock and
(41:51):
Mow Football Show, and I told Rocky, like, did you
got to go for two?
Speaker 7 (41:55):
There?
Speaker 4 (41:56):
Like other teams defenses on its heels. You have no
guarantee going to get the ball back. In the overtime rules,
I've obviously changed, no guarantee you're going to get the
ball back, like you've stunned the crowd. Like line up,
find your best two point conversion play win the game.
A little bit different set of circumstances because at that
point the clock had expired in Baltimore last year thirty
eight seconds.
Speaker 2 (42:17):
But I brought that up on my show.
Speaker 4 (42:18):
Rocky yelled at me, And when the guy like that
yells at you, it's kind of like, man, I hope
all he does is yell at me. And then many
of you guys folks in the audience yelled at me
for making the case the Bengals should have gone for two.
This is something I've believed really since then, that if
if your pool within one in the closing seconds and
you're in a position where you're maybe not going to
get the ball again, you've got to go for two.
Speaker 2 (42:41):
So the Bengals they go for two.
Speaker 4 (42:43):
And it was a fair discussion point Tony and I
the day after, I guess the monday after, I remember
in Twin Peaks, we spent a considerable amount of time
not debating because I think he was on my side
going through the pros and cons of going for two,
and going through the pros and cons of kicking the pat.
Pro go for two every single time in that set
of circumstances, every single time. And so you know not
(43:06):
that I have this Lance McCallister series of core beliefs
as a sports fan, but there are a set of
things that for me, they're just I plant my flag.
I plant my flag on sacrifice bunts being a bad strategy,
plant my flag on pitcher wins and losses being irrelevant.
I have no idea what any reds pitchers, wins and
losses totals are. Plant my flag on college basketball the
(43:30):
NCAA tournament expansion being a bad idea. I absolutely plant
my flag more than anything else. On how dumb it is,
how many games get lost because college football college basketball
coaches bench players in the first half when they have
two fouls, and along with that, if you're down one
in the closing seconds, you have just pulled within a point,
(43:51):
you go for two.
Speaker 2 (43:52):
You don't kick the pat.
Speaker 4 (43:53):
Why do I bring this up because on quarterback last night,
Now they're they're kind of there. They're going through the
Bengals season, Joe Borough season. They show him angry on
the sideline, They show him angry after the two point
conversion failed. But then the camera shows the door to
the Bengals locker room and you hear very clearly Zach
(44:17):
Taylor and his postgame address to the team, And it
warmed my heart to hear the coach of the Bengals
say this. Now, I don't recall, and I didn't recall
last night if if he talked about this publicly. I'm
sure he was asked about the decision to go for two.
But I loved hearing this, and now this is something
(44:38):
we're gonna hold him to for the remainder of his
tenure in Cincinnati. Tarn go ahead and hit the audio.
Speaker 13 (44:45):
They may have one more play than we did, and
we've been saying that a lot this year, but I
promise you this, this is a playoff team. You guys
are gonna catch fire and get into playoffs. So don't
doubt that for one second. We have a one game
season next week, and just understand this. We're going down fighting.
I'm going for two out of one hundred times so
(45:06):
I'll doubt that for one second. We'll go ahead, come
in here and win the game. We're all leaving it
for chance. Okay, I'm believe in you guys.
Speaker 2 (45:14):
Okay, So there's Zach Taylor.
Speaker 4 (45:15):
Now, a couple of things about that number One, the
game they would play the next week, they lost another
heartbreaker to the Chargers, and then they lost the one
after that, and they didn't make the postseason. So it's
that's worth mentioning, I guess. But he said one hundred
times out of one hundred, a hundred times out of
one hundred. Now, there's lots of things that we can
(45:35):
criticize Zach Taylor for. He gets beaten up a little
bit for his play calling. I think that's mostly not entirely,
but mostly an overrated criticism. I don't have a real
strong feeling either way about Zach Taylor, to be completely
honest with you, I don't think he's a terrible coach.
I don't think he's like some you know, football genius either.
(45:58):
But I love that and so we have to keep
that audio to make sure in the event that Zach
Taylor doesn't do what he said, he'll do one hundred
percent of the time. If the Bengals have a game
this year where they have the ball and they're down
by a point, they've just scored and now they have
to make the decision Moneymack and the pat tie the
(46:21):
score or go for two. I'm not talking about with
like six minutes to go, although there's a part of
me that was six minutes to go would still like
to see them go for two. I'm talking about in
the closing seconds, in the last minute, where if you
don't score, you're not going to get the ball back,
or if you do kick the pat, chances are you're
going to overtime.
Speaker 2 (46:42):
You got to go for two. There Bengals did. It
didn't work out.
Speaker 4 (46:46):
There were a lot of folks and we debated it
all week long on this show, a lot of folks
who thought they got it wrong by going for two.
My biggest issue was the fact that multiple infractions were
not flagged on Baltimore. But we have to keep that
audio to ensure that Zach Taylor will live up to
his word and moving forward in a season where the
(47:06):
Bengals are probably going to play in a lot more
close games, in a season that could be determined by
a player too in those close games. We have to
make sure that Zach will continue to do what he
said he will do, and what he said he will
do came in defense of what he did, and that's
Gopher two. Every single time the team is down by
(47:29):
a point in the final seconds. He did it in
Baltimore last year. It was one thousand percent the correct strategy.
Unfortunately it didn't work out, and it's I think it's
one thousand percent the correct strategy no matter who your
quarterback is, it's really the correct strategy when you have
Joe Burrow and the weapons that he has at his disposal.
So that, to me, was the most significant part of
(47:50):
quarterback last night. The coach of the team going yes
one hundred out of one hundred, one hundred percent of
the time, I'm going to do something that's might fly
in the face of what could be considered conventional wisdom,
and in a similar situation as the one that didn't
work that night, He's going to keep the offense on
the field when they're down by one. I am happy
(48:11):
to hear this. Maybe I already knew this, but I'm
happy to hear this. And if he doesn't do that
this year, we're going to bring back that audio and
throw it in his face. Uh sixteen after four o'clock
Brendanman and Jones on baseball is coming up in just
about thirty five minutes. Our phone lines were open at
(48:32):
five point three seven four nine, fifteen thirty. More on
the dueling c pluses of Cincinnati sports. But let's get
back to something we talked a little bit about late
last hour. So the trade deadline is coming, and the
Reds may be buyers and they may be sellers. Maybe
they're neither. But man, just once, just once, there's something
(48:59):
I want want to do, and I bet you wanted
to tell you what it is. Next on ESPN.
Speaker 9 (49:04):
Fifteen thirty, Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty Traffic from the.

(49:35):

I'm at ezelic with traffic.
Speaker 4 (49:41):
Mister read never sounded so good twenty two after four o'clock.
Speaker 2 (49:46):
By the way, I'm a hugger.
Speaker 4 (49:47):
That's not by the way, birth by the way, d
we're talking about the weirdness of Hunter Green, where, man,
it felt like for a week or so, things were
moving in a direction where, you know, it seemed like
likely that he was going to make us start after
the All Star break, and not that there was no
room for a setback or that it was set in
(50:08):
stone that he was going to rejoin the team after
the All Star break, but it certainly felt like it
was trending in that direction. And talking about his just
overall lack of reliability. This is not a statement about
Hunter Green the guy. I think this dude has been
a part of the Reds for so long that I
think the kind of guy that he is is pretty clear.
Speaker 2 (50:28):
Good dude.
Speaker 4 (50:30):
And it's it's not about the money that they've paid
Hunter Green this year the eighty first or eighty second
highest paid pitcher in baseball. He's going to get a
raise next year, like two point three million bucks. He's
one of the great bargains in this sport. The Reds
absolutely did the right thing in paying him when they
paid him, in giving him the amount that they've paid him.
(50:50):
So it's not about the it's about this year. It's
about this year. Can you if I would have said
back in February, if I would have asked, can the
Reds get to the postseason without Hunter Green pitching, I
don't know, making twenty five starts, he would have said
probably not. You might have said, Hunter Green can pitch
(51:14):
the entire season and they're probably still not going to
make the playoffs. So he's made eleven starts this year.
He's not with the team right now, he's been sent
to Arizona. Being sent to Arizona, Nobody is even trying
to publicly at least wrap their brain around with the
timeline could look like Terry Francona said, there's no roadmap,
(51:36):
so your guess is as good as anybody else's. When
when he's gonna leave Arizona to go pitch in a
minor league game? And then I'm guessing if he pitches
in one minor league game, they're gonna want him to
pitch in a second one. So those things may happen,
but when and then if they do and there's no
setback he joins the team, Like when, so they have
(51:58):
sixty nine games ago, that spot in the rotation is
gonna come up and I don't know, thirteen fourteen more
times if let's say Hunter Green, like we go worst case,
Like we go worst case and he doesn't pitch for
the rest of the season for whatever reason. Maybe it's
(52:20):
a mental thing, Maybe there are some physical complications that
haven't yet been detected by an MRI.
Speaker 2 (52:28):
Who knows.
Speaker 4 (52:30):
Can this team get to the playoffs without Hunter Green?
It's a large number of games right now, Chase Burns
is occupying that spot in the rotation. But once Chase
burns innings limit has been hit, or once it is
(52:51):
determined and maybe this happens because of performance, who knows.
Once it has been determined that Chase Burns isn't going
to fill that spot anymore than what now I know.
Right now, it feels like the answer is going to
be Carson Spiers gonna be good enough, swamping out Hunter
Green for Carson Spiers. So then you know, you make
(53:14):
it about the trade deadline again. You know, for weeks
as we talked about the deadline and how it was
approaching and what they may or may not do. We
have focused on a bat and a relief arm. Are
we sure they shouldn't be looking for a starting pitcher?
(53:35):
Now you might go, yeah, MO, but I mean, you know,
the offense is the offense is woefully deficient. We knew
it was since the before the season started, and I
understand that. But if starting pitching is the most important
part of this sport, the most important part of any team,
and we acknowledge there is a bit of a question
mark about who's going to make a large chunk of
(53:59):
the start in the remaining games the Reds have and
the death has already been tested to the degree it
has You're just taking starting pitcher off the deadline as
the trade deadline gets here?
Speaker 2 (54:17):
Not me, not me?
Speaker 4 (54:19):
Five one, three, seven, four, nine, fifteen thirty. It would
be so refreshing, you know. I remember bringing this up
to Tony and Austin on since he three sixty a
week or two before the season started, where one of
them mentioned trade deadline, and I'm like, really, we're doing
that already.
Speaker 2 (54:33):
It's March trade deadline. Trade deadline.
Speaker 4 (54:37):
There have obviously been a lot of really impactful trade
deadline deals. I do think is a general rule we
overstate its significance as it relates to a acquiring a
lot of young prospects, although obviously teams have benefited from
the young players they have acquired the deadline, but also
b it's it's impact with getting players who could help
(54:58):
right now. Like, there's two things I would love to
do one day. One is to not so much talk
about the deadline from the standpoint of the Reds getting
a savior or the Reds needing to address some woeful
part of their team, some glaring weakness, and instead talk
(55:21):
about the deadline as something they can do or something
they could use to supplement what they already have to
supplement an already clearly contending team. Would also be great
to go into a season knowing that the trade deadline
is going to be a thing. It is for everybody
and should always be used to see how you can
(55:42):
make your team better. But isn't necessarily this safety net
that I feel like we make it out to be.
Almost every single year, How many times, not just this year,
have you heard someone talk about like the makeup of
the team or the construction of the roster, and it's like, well,
you know they can address that at the deadline. The
trade deadline should not be a part of your preseason planning. Ideally,
(56:06):
it's something that you use to supplement what you already have.
I feel like the way we frame trade deadline talkts
a little bit more than that. Twenty nine minutes after
four o'clock at mulager on Twitter, I have yet to
throw out a poll question.
Speaker 7 (56:20):
We'll do that.
Speaker 2 (56:20):
It's going to be related to one of those C plus's.

the exhibition opener, which is going to be against Murray

I'll give it to you. I'll give you a whole
non conference schedule. I mentioned the Murray State exhibition. The

I came close to going to. That is on Monday,
November third. Then they host Le Moyne Santa Clara. They're
at Iowa home for Old Dominion. They play in the

Speaker 2 (59:01):
So there you go. Let's see.
Speaker 4 (59:05):
Oh, I guess we can mention this now. This isn't
necessarily a sports headline, but Bengals training camp starts in
thirteen days and Tony and I talked about this toward
the end of his show on since he three sixty
that we are we're expanding our Bengals training camp coverage
this year.
Speaker 2 (59:23):
We're pretty stoked about it.
Speaker 4 (59:25):
We have always I think we've always done a really
good job of training camp. But I'm biased because I,
you know, work here. But you know, for years we've
sent Tony down to training camp, and you know, even
before he was doing since he three sixty, and then
over the last few years, as he has done since
e three sixty, it's always been great. While we have
been on the air, Bengals have been practicing in the afternoon,
(59:47):
to have Tony do live updates, it's very valuable. It's
really valuable just to have a set of eyes. It's
also great when there's something late breaking or something important
that's going on, if there's a key injury, if there's
a fight something like that, it's awesome to have Tony there.
And he obviously does an awesome job with those reports.
But I've always thought, like, man, it would still be
(01:00:09):
so cool to be down there and do a show
while they're practicing, and for a variety of reasons, that's
just not something that's been able to happen.
Speaker 2 (01:00:17):
So this year.
Speaker 4 (01:00:18):
As you probably know, if you're a Bengals fan, they've
changed the training Camp calendar. They've changed the structure of
the day at training Camp where now the practices are
going to be in the morning, and they have I
think the number is eight. They have eight practices in
the morning that go from what ten, ten to twelve.
Speaker 2 (01:00:38):
And so we're going to do something.
Speaker 4 (01:00:41):
We've never done before where we are going to broadcast
from training Camp in the morning during practice.
Speaker 2 (01:00:50):
And we're going to do this for ten different days.
Speaker 4 (01:00:53):
So we're going to be there for the public practices,
but we're also going to be there for a couple
of practices that aren't open to the public. And we're
not changing up this show. We're not changing up Tony Show.
We're just gonna add two hours of local programming. If
if I was in charge, which I think most people
should be very happy that I'm not, we would be
local for much more of the day than we actually are.
(01:01:15):
But that's a different discussion. What we're gonna do is
we're gonna do what we're gonna call it the Tony
and Moe Training Camp Show from ten to noon.
Speaker 2 (01:01:22):
And there could be some days where I stick.
Speaker 4 (01:01:24):
Around for a little bit longer, but we'll do Tony
and I and I'm excited for this. We obviously do
the Tony and Mo Football Show during the season, and
that's gonna be a Twin Peaks again this year, which
we're really excited about because we love the folks at
Twin Peaks. That starts the Monday after the first game,
which is the first Monday, is the eighth of September.
But we're gonna do for training camp the Tony and
(01:01:45):
Mode Training Camp Show, and it's gonna be during the morning,
so we're gonna be on from ten to noon, and
then Tony is gonna stick around and do his show
with Austin since he three to sixty. I will then
drive back to Kenwood do my show from three to six,
and we'll still do some training camp stuff with Tony
during our show. But I am super super stoked about
this for very selfish reasons. Training camp is always fun
(01:02:09):
to go to, and you know, for me selfishly, I'm
never during the week at least ever really able to
go because I gotta be here and so to have
the chance to be there while they're doing practice and
do a show during it, and I've never done something
like that before, So how it's gonna work as being
discussed and we're not exactly sure, but I also think
(01:02:31):
it's gonna be a great boost to the radio station,
and more importantly, I think it's gonna be awesome for
you and our audience. So that is gonna start on
the first day of camp July twenty third, and it's
not gonna be something we do all five days every
single week. Again, we have ten of these shows planned
and there's gonna be no disruption in the typical broadcast schedule,
(01:02:53):
so you'll still have Sincy three sixty, You'll still have
this show. It will be fun to have eight hours
of low programming on this station as opposed to six
for those ten days. And it starts in the first
day of CAM July twenty third, And we cannot thank
the Bengals enough for giving us an opportunity to broadcast
from down there. Tony did a couple of Sincy three
(01:03:13):
sixty shows down there last year, which was great, but
to be able to be on with him and be
on from camp while practice is happening, I think it's
gonna be a lot of fun, and I think we're
gonna make it fun for you in our audience. So
we are really looking forward to that it could not
happen without the We couldn't just show up. We needed
(01:03:37):
the Bengals to you know, sign off on it and
help us out.
Speaker 2 (01:03:40):
A little bit. And they've agreed to.
Speaker 4 (01:03:42):
So we cannot thank them enough for that, and it's
gonna be a lot of fun starting on July twenty third,
speaking of the Bengals. So we did this yesterday, the
Reds off season grade, i'm sorry, mid season grade. According
to ESPN dot com, they got a C plus. And
I joked about this before, but as a pretty much
(01:04:02):
a career C plus student that it gave me something
in common with the Reds. And so we had a
poll question yesterday which I think I think I sent
it and actually has one minute left as I look
at it now. I asked on the Twitter, thanks to
United Heartland Assurance, this grade is either one that should
(01:04:24):
be higher, one that should be lower, or.
Speaker 2 (01:04:27):
One that is what it should be.
Speaker 4 (01:04:29):
Seventy seven point five percent of you say the C
plus for the Reds at mid season, which we're approaching
the All Star break a reflection of how they have
played this year, maybe a reflection of how they have
played relative to injury and expectation and all that C plus.
The overwhelming majority of folks who responded said that grade
(01:04:50):
is pretty much what it should be.
Speaker 2 (01:04:53):
At ESPN dot com today, using.
Speaker 4 (01:04:56):
Their Football Power indexes, SETH Walter has they have given
grades for every NFL team's off season. The grade is
not based on how good you were last year. It
was based on the moves you made, the decisions you
made players, you acquired players, you drafted players, you let walk,
(01:05:19):
the coaches, you might have hired, front office changes you
may have gone through. They've given every team an off
season greed, and they have done this periodically for the offseason.
They had one sort of after the first wave of
free agency, another one after the draft, so they've graded
every team's off season in its entirety. The Bengals were
given a C plus. The Bengals and Reds both got
(01:05:45):
C pluses. So you can vote now at moegar. Thanks
to United Heartland Insurance, this grade should be higher, should
be lower? Or is just about right? I think it's
just about right. I think it's just about right. I
would probably make it closer to a C. And again,
(01:06:05):
it's the off season, so some good things did happen
this offseason, and they explain the rationale behind every pick
and you can go read it if you want. They
got the Jamar Chase deal done, though it's worth mentioning
Jamar was gonna play for the Bengals this year anyway.
And they did get a deal done for t Higgins,
(01:06:25):
which I think most of us would agree is good.
But there's still a lot out there that is either
creating uncertainty or frustration, or in some cases both, like
the Trey Hendrickson issue has had no resolution. I'm certainly
a proponent of not trading him. I was before the draft,
(01:06:47):
I am now. We've talked about Tray a lot at nauseum,
and I still contend that neither side is necessarily wrong.
But they haven't yet achieved a resolution with Tray Hendrickson,
and it looks like something that's going to loom over
the start of training camp, which wasn't something that anybody wanted,
but it certainly feels like the likely outcome and the
(01:07:08):
Shamar Stewart thing might have a resolution here soon. We'll see,
but as of right now, there's at least a good
chance that their first round draft choice is not going
to be on the field for the first game and
then and this isn't to say that this they will
fall flat on their face. But I think if you
look at the team, just look at the roster, compare
(01:07:31):
it to what we were saying at the end of
last season about how the defense was going to need
an overhaul and how the offensive line was going to
have to be significantly upgraded. It is hard to say
that they have significantly upgraded the offensive line now. Now,
we may change our minds in three or four weeks
once the season has started and go, man, you know what,
their offensive line has been better than it's been in
(01:07:53):
ten years, But you can't say that yet. Let's be honest,
there are still a lot of familiar faces on that
defense that return from a defense the last year wasn't
that good. We used words like overhaul to describe the
Bengals defense when the offseason started. They haven't overhauled it.
We use terms like major upgrades at guard. I don't
(01:08:15):
know if Dylan Fairchild and Lucas Patrick and the guys
they have at the guard position represent massive upgrades for
the twenty twenty five season. So I'll go see. I'll
say that C plus sounds just about right. Again, this
isn't about who they bring back, and you know Joe
(01:08:35):
Burrow is on the team, so they should get higher
than a C plus. Now, this is about what they
have done and haven't done, who they have acquired, who
they've lost, who they let get away, and who they've hired,
and like, yeah, they've hired some new coaches, and maybe
Al Golden ends up being the guy, and maybe Scott
Peters ends up being the greatest offensive line coach of
all time. But keet hiring those two people for their
(01:08:57):
respective capacities increased agreed from a C or a C
plus to something higher. I don't think so, at least
not yet. Time will tell. Vote now at Moegger five

Reds and Marlins winding down the four game series. You
hate to say, well, you'll take a split, but if
(01:12:24):
you can get a game tonight, they should. And I
know that Colorado Rockies are still a Major League Baseball team.
I know that despite being on pace to have the
worst regular season record in the history of the sport,
that they have still found a way to win twenty
one games. But the Reds should sweep the Colorado Rockies
(01:12:49):
this weekend. Colorado just went to Boston this week. They've
got a day off today. They lost three games by
a score by scores of nine, three, ten two, and
ten two. The closest game of the three was one
they lost by six runs and gave up nine. They
(01:13:13):
are and we got a chance to watch this team

Speaker 2 (01:13:17):
The games were.
Speaker 4 (01:13:20):

I'm not mistake, and won that game eight seven.

there was the initial disappointment of not making. It there
(01:14:26):
was the joy and relief and excitement of him being
announced as a, replacement and there was the game that
he pitched last. Night and to, me of all the
stuff That Andrew abbot, did had happened to him or went.
Through the most significant was the seven plus sinnings he
threw last night because The reds needed to win last night's.
(01:14:50):
Game you, know we talk all the time about staff.
Aces you cannot Consider Hunter green the staff ace right
now because he's not on the staff And god knows
when he. Will Hunter green has been a staff ace this. Year,
now every staff has an, ace because every staff has
to have a best. Pitcher but if you're like a
bona fide number one and maybe on a differently constructed,
(01:15:13):
staff or maybe on a staff with a Healthy Hunter,
Green Andrew abbott wouldn't be the clear number. One but
LIKE i thought of this when When monday came and,
Went it's, like, dude if you're really an all, star
if you're really as good as you know many have
made you out to, be then go out there against
The Miami marlins and stick it to him and end
(01:15:35):
the losing. STREAK a staff ace if you've lost four consecutive,
games delivers a. Victory now he had help last. Night
red's hit the ball pretty, hard got a lead early
For Andrew. Abbot benson hit a. Homer Uelve marte a good,
game but the key Was Andrew abbott and on a,
week during a week where he was named as An All,
star he showed, everybody, hey this is Why i'm An All,
(01:15:56):
star this is Why i'm an upper echelon. Pitcher they
badly needed a great start from him last. Night he
gave it to him and it was fun to. Watch
hopefully that continues and he's got a very good chance
to pitching the game On, tuesday which would be. Awesome
The Hunter green thing here just really. Quick there's just
there's so much weirdness around this where you know they've
(01:16:17):
acknowledged he had ANOTHER. Mri THE mri was pretty, good
but he's still dealing with. Something not only is he
not close to making a rehab, start he's In arizona right.
Now LIKE i Love Hunter, green we all. Do he's
a great pitcher when he's, healthy you just can't count on.
Him and so the question becomes what do you do
with the starting staff and specifically that spot That Hunter
(01:16:40):
green is supposed to be, occupying That Chase burns is
holding down right, now but it's probably not going to
have it that long. Term carson spiders the, answer and
if the answer to that question is, no, then who is.
Speaker 2 (01:16:56):
We have that to get to and we have talked

Speaker 4 (01:17:24):
Beer that was something, else AND i played some audio
before From Hard knocks that if we have, TIME i
would like to get to because it speaks to one
of the central themes of the upcoming. Season like we've
talked a lot about The bengals in their defense this
year and what they've done With Trey hendrickson and what
(01:17:46):
they've done and not done With Shamar. Stewart Pro Football
focus ranked The bengals offensive line thirty first best in THE. Nfl,
now you may believe The bengals offensive line will be
better than, that and FRANKLY i do, too BECAUSE i
am buying all The amarius MIMSTOCK i can. Find Orlando
brown is still a quality player at left, tackle AND
(01:18:07):
i Think Ted carris is going to benefit simply from
not having to clean up as many messes as The
guards left him last. Year at the same, time guard
is still a major question mark for this. Team they
didn't go as all in at the position in free
agency as many of us either wanted them to or
suspected they, would and so it does feel like a
(01:18:28):
low ceiling and thus low floor offensive line we will.
Speaker 2 (01:18:32):
See it was also the T higgins.
Speaker 4 (01:18:35):
Thing you, Know Joe burrow made The bengals pivot when
it comes to T, Higgins but the original plan was
let him. Walk nobody wanted to believe that at the.
Time i'm not sure anybody really wants to believe that,
Now but it was abundantly clear what they planned on
doing with T, higgins and Then Joe burrow changed their
(01:18:55):
mind for them and The bengals signed, him and for
my money at, lead that was the right thing to.
Speaker 2 (01:19:01):
Do and if The bengals are.
Speaker 4 (01:19:03):
Going to be great this, year the biggest reason why
is going to be Because Joe burrow And Jamar chase
AND T higgins collectively are, awesome but he has missed
time because of. Injury in, fact missed games last year
because of. Injury he's missed ten games over the last
two seasons because of. Injury the reason, why one of
(01:19:23):
the reasons why The bengals were hesitant to give him
the kind of money he was looking for was based
in part on his injury. History and so one of
the questions THAT i have about this team this season
is CAN T higgins shed that label and, prove knowing
The bengals did with him what they, did prove that
he was deserving and not, deserving but prove that he
(01:19:46):
was worth investing into the degree that they have had
invested him invested in.
Speaker 2 (01:19:51):
HIM i can't.
Speaker 4 (01:19:51):
Talk that he is worth investing in to the degree
The bengals have invested in him because he's not a
walking him string. Injury that's a question for this coming.
Season it's a major question for this coming. Season, also
what's the the depth like at wide? Receiver right like
(01:20:13):
Andre yoshamash is a nice, Player Jermaine burton capable of
making a leap, anyway there's a chunk. There From Netflix's
quarterback episode four that if we have, time and if
we don't have time, today we're working in. Tomorrow THAT
i think is points to one of these central questions
about this upcoming, season and we'll get to that here
(01:20:33):
in just a. Bit our lines are open at five point, three,
seven four, nine fifteen. Thirty we have a poll question
that's about the off season GRADE espn has given The.
Speaker 2 (01:20:42):
Bengals check it.
Speaker 4 (01:20:43):
Out thanks To United Heartland, INSURANCE espn has given them
A c. Plus it's just an off season. GRADE i
don't think they're saying The bengals are A c plus,
team although maybe they, are or maybe they. Will they're
grading the off season with A c. Plus more on
that coming up here in just a. Bit but, First
cincinnati is rolling four straight. Wins columbus is coming to.
(01:21:03):
Town huge match from a rivalry, perspective huge match in

to talk about it next ON espn fifteen.

their biggest rival On. Saturday the hell is real DERBY
Fc cincinnati Hosting. Columbus huge, Match huge match for all
the rivalry, reasons huge match in The Eastern, conference and
a little more juice to it because of how well
The orange And blue have been. Playing game starts at
seven point thirty On saturday. Night he is a FORMER
(01:22:14):
Mls rookie of The, year a guy who played twelve
seasons Across Major League soccer In, europe forty six caps

FOR Mls Season pass On APPLE.
Speaker 2 (01:22:25):
Tv Maurice adu is with. Us it's good to have, You.
Maurice how are.
Speaker 7 (01:22:28):
You i'm doing?
Speaker 8 (01:22:30):
Well? Man how are?
Speaker 4 (01:22:31):
YOU i am doing really. Well i'm excited For. Saturday
is This is this the best rivalry right now In
Major league?
Speaker 14 (01:22:38):
Soccer, oh it's right, There it's right up there with the.
Best we're fortunate In Major league soccer to have a
few good. Rivalries BUT i mean the fact that this
team has so many of the important. Components this matchup
has some ma of the important. Components top level, talent good,
managers good fan, bases passionate fan. Base is the proximity
(01:22:58):
of the two cities to. One there's just so many
ingredients to making this one of the best rivals in the.
Speaker 8 (01:23:03):
LEAGUE Fc.
Speaker 4 (01:23:04):
Cincinnati it has felt, like and you, know we've talked
about this a. Lot in Late, may the whole thing
felt kind of, janky kind of, broken kind of. Discombobulated
and the way they have played ever since taking a
break because of THE Fifa Club World cup being played,
here it has felt like pat. Noonan they've gotten, healthier
they look. Better Obviously evander has been a difference, maker
(01:23:28):
and this has looked like a team that can play
for hardware this.
Speaker 7 (01:23:31):
Year well that's the.
Speaker 8 (01:23:33):
Goal that's the.
Speaker 14 (01:23:34):
Goal it's funny because we sometimes diminished the importance of
having time to, train having time to just to not
just be focused on games happening every few days and
actually having time to be on the training pitch with your,
coach with your, teammates let each other's, tendencies work out
some of the teams that have gone. Wrong we sometimes
forget how valuable that that, is and so For cincinnati
(01:23:55):
having that time off was incredibly valuable for them to
work out some of the defensive and issues to allow
players Like Kevin zank And evander Kay kamara coming into
the team to just really form that cohesion in. Chemistry
and we've seen the result of it four games now
in a world That Big one won their first game
at home in about a month's, time which leads itself
(01:24:16):
perfectly into this hell is real matchup on the?
Speaker 7 (01:24:18):
Weekend how do you?
Speaker 4 (01:24:20):
Describe AND i would often ask this About Lucho acosta
when he was, here AND i would ask folks who
covered the team and who called some of the. Matches
do you run out of superlatives to talk about? HIM
i GUESS i could apply the same question to a
player like A.
Speaker 14 (01:24:32):
Vander evander is just LIKE i, mean it's it's effortless
and the stuff he does because he makes the crazy
look like it's the simplest, thing whether it's the way
he's scoring, goals the way he's creating, goals the way
he just like maneuvers through pressure and handles the ball so.
Comfortably he just makes the game look so easy at
(01:24:54):
times that we forget that this game is happening at
a million months per, hour that there are opponents on the. Pitch,
yeah you're, right there. Aren't there aren't enough words to
describe the way that this guy plays a. Game it's
such a level of Grace at, times it almost feels.
Nonchalant but he has been everything and then some when
it comes to the cost of, admission the purchase price
(01:25:16):
that they paid to bring him over From, portland and
he's over delivered on what they expected from him out
of from this.
Speaker 4 (01:25:21):
TRANSFER Fc cincinnati has Played columbus. Already the game was
up In. COLUMBUS i felt like they were lucky to
get out of there with a.
Speaker 2 (01:25:29):
Point we're rooting for a different result.
Speaker 4 (01:25:31):
Today what about this match from A cincinnati's perspective concerns?
Speaker 14 (01:25:35):
You concerns? ME i would say that there are just
two top, teams. Right you can't what you learned from
the last matchup In. Columbus you think that you can apply,
That but these are two really clubver. Managers Will pronouncie
For Columbus, Crew Pat noonan for S C, cincinnati two
really really ambitious and top managers in this. League and
(01:25:55):
SO i would think the concern is just being. Overconfident
from AN Fc cincinnati fan, Point you've won four games
in a, row your top of the support Is, shue
top of The Eastern. Conference don't be naive and let
that you, know don't let any kind of overconfidence set.
In don't get, complacent don't take it for up the.
Gas BUT i don't see that being the. ISSUE i
don't see that being the case because going into this
(01:26:17):
MATCHUP us from the media standpoint, fans they will let
you know how important this match is too for all parties.
Involved So i'm anticipating another good. GAME i feel like
this game always delivers from so many different. Standpoints the
quality of play on the, pitch the fan base, is
the passion leading up to the, games the media coverage
(01:26:37):
the week leading up to the. Game DON'T i don't
have too many, concerns If i'm being. Honest from that,
standpoint it's just more SO i want to see a
lot of. GOALS i want to see a lot of.
GOALS i want to see a lot of quality in
the final there and from both, sides you.
Speaker 4 (01:26:49):
Have four teams separated by four points atop The Eastern,
conference WITH Fc cincinnati a, top and then you Have
nashville a point Behind, philadelphia two Behind columbus four so
we can have a major swing On. Saturday how do
you handicap The Eastern conference as a?
Speaker 14 (01:27:05):
Whole that's, pandemonium isn't?
Speaker 8 (01:27:08):
It what you just.
Speaker 14 (01:27:10):
Described it is probably one of the i'd, say closely
closest Contested Eastern conferences we've had in a, while which is.
GREAT i mean from AN mls, Standpoint from a neutral fans,
standpoint that's what you want to. See you want to see.
Competition you want to see competitive teams really pushing each
other and making every game have that much more. Significant,
so while we attach the importance of this being a derby,
(01:27:32):
match is also the significance of Either cincinnati trying to
separate themselves from the pack a little bit Or columbus
trying to close that gap between themselves in F C.
Cincinnati BUT i love. IT i love when games have
high stakes and high importance and their drama attached to
every single kick of the. Ball and that's the kind
of reality that we're living in right.
Speaker 4 (01:27:50):
Now no, question should be an awesome. MATCH Fc cincinnati
is playing. Great The Eastern conference is, chaotic which is
how we. Like it should be a lot of fun On, Saturday,
MAURICE i appreciate the, time, man.
Speaker 2 (01:28:02):
Thank you so.
Speaker 8 (01:28:02):
Much thank you for having.
Speaker 2 (01:28:04):

Speaker 2 (01:39:47):

Speaker 4 (01:39:48):
Go congratulations To tyler and everybody who chose to play
as a contestant of this unbelievably stupid radio. Game five
point three seven fifteen thirty is our phone number in
eight six six seven two three seven seven six. Works
in addition to all of, that we were talking earlier
today about the start of training, camp which were now
(01:40:10):
less than two weeks. Away were less than two weeks
away from The tony And Moe Training camp, show which
is gonna be broadcast From bengals training camp ten times
in the.
Speaker 11 (01:40:18):
Morning.
Speaker 4 (01:40:19):
Uh once training camp unfolds and Neither tony OR i
could be more excited about that pretty pumped up about that.
OPPORTUNITY i WISH i could read that email THAT i just.
Speaker 7 (01:40:36):
Got.
Speaker 4 (01:40:37):
Uh the poll is about The bengals in their off
season grade of A c. Plus The BENGALS i believe
are going to be a playoff team this. YEAR i
am assuming health For Joe. BURROW i will double down
on WHAT i said last year and was completely and
totally wrong.
Speaker 2 (01:40:56):
ABOUT i said Last july Or august that.
Speaker 4 (01:41:01):
If Joe burrow played in every game that, matters The
bengals will be a playoff.
Speaker 2 (01:41:06):
TEAM i said.
Speaker 4 (01:41:07):
This the exact VERBIAGE i used WAS i cannot imagine
there's a world Where Joe burrow plays a full season
and The bengals don't make the. Postseason, OBVIOUSLY i was dead.
Wrong joe played a full season and is as is
documented on. Quarterback he wasn't perfect every single, game but holy,
hell he was good last.
Speaker 2 (01:41:26):
Year.
Speaker 4 (01:41:26):
MAN i think he's the best quarterback in the. League
he played all seventeen. GAMES i think one of the
great failures in Recent cincinnati sports history is The bengals
failing to get to the postseason with a quarterback who
was AN mvp candidate played at AN mvp caliber. Level
to not make the playoffs with that is just absolutely organizational.
(01:41:48):
Malpractice BUT i do find it hard to imagine That
joe plays another full season because if he plays another full,
SEASON i assume he plays at the level that he
has played at in every year where he has gone
through a full, season and that's at a really high.
Level the three times he has played a full, season
The bengals have either made The Super bowl or he
(01:42:09):
has been AN mvp. Finalist So i'll assume he's close
to AN mvp finalist if he plays a full seventeen.
Games i'll assume if he plays a full seventeen games
or like, sixteen but he sits out week, seventeen because
it means. Nothing it's impossible for me to imagine that that.
Happens and in consecutive years they're on the outside looking.
In so this, TEAM i think we would all, agree
(01:42:32):
has a chance to be pretty good now there's. Questions
we know what they. Are we've talked about him for
months on. End so the offseason grade IS i don't
think it's a grade about Their Super bowl, bonafides or
it's not a grade about the up and down quality
of the. Roster it's a greade about how the team
(01:42:54):
has navigated the. Offseason some teams have had very quiet.
Offseasons some teams have had very busy off. Seasons some
teams jumped into free agency with both. Feet some teams
have new head. Coaches some teams have done an entire organizational. Reset,
like everybody's off season is. Different so it's about what
you've done from the end of last year to right.
(01:43:15):
Now what The bengals have done with the roster from
last year to right, now relative to what most of
us thought they were going to, do or at least
thought they should, do has been. Underwhelming if IF i
or anybody else when the season ended last year would
(01:43:38):
have outlined an off season that is a carbon copy
of the off season that The bengals just went, THROUGH
i think anybody who cares it all about this franchise
would have, said uh, uh that's not good.
Speaker 2 (01:43:52):
Enough go back to the drawing. Board if we.
Speaker 4 (01:43:55):
Would have said that going into training, camp and maybe
this does get, resolved but going into training camp there's
going to be another contract standoff hovering over the, beginning
threatening the availability of a player for camp and perhaps
for the start of the, season you would have said
that cannot. Happen where we sit, today that's certainly a.
(01:44:18):
Possibility one might, argue it's. Likely IF i would have
said back In december or Early january that whoever The
bengals take with their first round pick is not going
to go through mini, camp it's not really going to
go through any of the, OTAs and training camp may
start without him on the, field you would have said
that cannot. Happen and yet it has not that they
(01:44:43):
have acquired bad players on. Defense but IF i would
have said back In january that they will largely leave
the defense, untouched leave the secondary very much, untouched bring
back a guy like you Know stone and used as
(01:45:03):
the centerpiece of their, offseason a first round pick with
one and a half, sacks and that guy's not gonna
sign until at Least, july you would have said that can't.
Work and yet here we. Are this does not, mean,
obviously The bengals will get it. Wrong And i'm taking
the leap of faith In Al golden that The bengals
(01:45:24):
want us, to AND i certainly do believe that he
can get more out of a player Like Logan. Wilson
but he's gonna be able to squeeze more out of
the pass. Rush is he going to be able to
take that collection of young and talented defensive backs and
have that add up to a more cohesive and more productive.
Speaker 2 (01:45:41):
Secondary we will.
Speaker 7 (01:45:42):
See.
Speaker 4 (01:45:47):
BUT i think top to bottom of the offseason has
been reasonably. Underwhelming, again they got The Jamar chase thing,
done they got THE T higgins DONE T higgins thing,
done and those are great where most of us are
in favor of, that and they still head into this
season as one of those teams THAT i think you
feel like has a legitimate chance to get to the Super.
(01:46:08):
Bowl they're not going to be. Favorites vegas doesn't have
him as favorites right. Now it's sort Of, Baltimore, Casey
buffalo and then a drop off and Then Cincinnati chargers
are in that.
Speaker 2 (01:46:17):
Mix, texans.
Speaker 4 (01:46:21):
BUT i think the offseason DESERVES i would go a
little bit, lower quite, frankly because we all said it
often last. Year they've got to avoid there being more
stuff when training camp. Starts The Trey hendrickson And Jamar,
Chase i'm. Sorry The Trey hendrickson And Jamar stewart issues
(01:46:42):
loom as big pieces of stuff as the start of
training camp, Looms and who, knows maybe The bengals are
so excuse, me well equipped to navigate the preseason in
training camp with distractions being a part of the, mix
(01:47:03):
that they're gonna be able to figure it out and
prepare for the season and get off to a great,
start no matter what happens With trey or no matter
what happens With. Shamar but if one of the core
objectives for you AND i as fans was to see
The bengals get through the offseason without a distraction looming
when training camp, starts, well mission so far at least not.
Accomplished there is still some, time BUT i think you're
(01:47:26):
being reasonable if you're not necessarily.
Speaker 2 (01:47:28):
Optimistic there you. Go more on that.
Speaker 4 (01:47:30):
