Speaker 1 (00:00):
Dave Lapham and Me for Bengals game Plan tonight, starting
at six on the official home of the Bengals, Cincinnati's
ESPN fifteen to thirty.

Speaker 2 (00:08):
I don't know, man, I don't know. I don't I
have no reaction other than that to what I just watched.
I love Ellie Dela Cruz. I love the idea of
Ellie Dela Cruz. My guy just made another throwing error
on a tailor made double play ball that allowed a
guy to score from first base. And so instead of

(00:30):
Red's up four to one, Bottom six two out, nobody on,
it's four to two. Guy on second, nobody out. Look,
they're not going to ban you from the ballpark if
you say god. Ellie Dela Cruz has had a disappointing
season in the field and at the play. When the
ball is at to Ellie Dela Cruz, I get weird, man,

(00:51):
because you never have any idea what's going to happen.
That play could not have been easier, simple throw to
the second baseman, Matt McClain covering. It's at least a
force outed second, it's probably double playball, and instead it's
an error, A run scores. There's a guy in scoring position,
and there's still nobody out. Reds are playing the Cardinals
right now, four to two, Cincinnati bottom six. We'll update
all afternoon. We'll have instant reaction from Saint Louis. Let's

(01:13):
just go ahead and say Red's have to win this
game a worst case starting today, eleven to go. Worst case,
they've got to win seven. That's worst case. That gets
him to eighty two. That might not be enough. Jake
Browning's gonna talk. We think in just about eight minutes,
we'll have that for you live. By the way, my
name's Moegar. This is ESPN fifteen thirty. Thank you for listening.

(01:34):
Show preview is available on Twitter at moegar, and it
comes your way thanks to Emory Federal Credit Union, your
credit union with heart since nineteen thirty nine. Check out
EMERYFCU dot org. Like I want Eli Dealer Cruz to
be everything I think he can be, and I'm not

(01:54):
giving a hope that that's gonna happen one day or
that you know it's not. Nobody's talking about trade him seriously,
But I do not know if the guy should play shortstop.
And I have come off the position I was in
three four months ago. I don't know a guy can't
make a simple throw. It's not a reliable defender. They

(02:15):
have been very good with the bad either. More on
that as the afternoon unfolds. I am a believer, and
I'm not telling you to believe this, but I am
a believer in doing what you can to make the
most out of a bad situation. The Bengals situation right
now is bad.

Speaker 3 (02:36):
Now.

Speaker 2 (02:36):
It's maybe not as dire as some are making it
out to be because they are too and zero, and
because Jake Browning is a capable backup quarterback. But when
you lose your starting QB, perhaps for the entire season,
although Zach Taylor was emphatic today that they're not shutting

(02:58):
the door on Joe Burrow coming back in time to
play this year. But when you lose your starting quarterback,
when you lose the franchise's meal ticket for an extended
period of time, it's obviously bad. You don't need me
to tell you that. I'm not telling you how to feel.
I don't believe in doing so. Everybody processes bad things differently.

(03:20):
All I can do is tell you how I feel.
I'm angry, pissed off, sad, frustrated, at a loss for words,
which isn't good for someone who talks for a living
all of those things, But as somebody who believes in
making the best out of a bad situation, understanding what

(03:40):
the Bengals have, I still believe this could be a
really fun season. Now, if the only way to have
fun this season is to watch the Bengals win a championship,
Number one, my guess is you've never had fun during
any Bengals season. Number two, That's fine. I'm not wired

(04:02):
that way. I'm not wired that way when you're dealing
with a bad situation. I don't think the Bengals can
win a championship this season. If I'm wrong about that,
I'll be the happiest person in the United States. But
I do think this is a team still worth following, watching,
and rooting for. And I'm not talking to a straw
man out there, because I haven't heard anybody who's saying, God,

(04:25):
I'm not gonna watch the Bengals this season. I'm done
with this franchise. I'm getting rid of my tickets for
the season. I'll do something else on Sunday. I haven't
heard that. But as much as we all feel some
level of despair right now, and we all do. Come
Sunday at one o'clock. I think it's gonna be a

(04:45):
lot of fun to see what Jake Browning can do.
I certainly believe he has an opportunity in front of
him number one, with good players to throw to a good,
capable offense that he has been a part of now
for a long time. I think he has a tremendous
opportunity to emphatically make a statement about his NFL starting

(05:06):
bona fides, and who knows where his career could go
if he ends up making the most of this opportunity,
I believe. And this isn't the story I wish was
being written this year, but I believe Jake Browning and
the Bengals still have a chance. Not that there's not
going to be obstacles to overcome. Still not sure this
defense is very good. Jake will be playing behind the

(05:27):
same offensive line that got Joe Burrow hurt. By the way,
Joe Burrow didn't get himself hurt, the offensive line did.
But still I believe Jake Browning and the Bengals have
a chance to author a pretty cool story this year.
And as much as I wish we were watching Joe
Burrow write one. Maybe it's just me. I know this

(05:49):
sounds hokey. I am looking forward to seeing how Jake
writes this story, what this team does, how much they
excite us at times, how much they how straight as
at times. But I still believe this is a season
that can be enjoyable and yes, fulfilling, even if it

(06:09):
doesn't end with Bengals quarterback and coach hoisting a Lombardi Trophy.
Ten minutes twelve minutes after three o'clock. Uh, five point three, seven,
four nine, fifteen thirty is our phone number. I do
think we have to talk about an area of the
team that has been just barely glossed over since Sunday.
We'll do that a little bit later on. And I

(06:30):
don't know, man, I'm weirdly bothered by this Tom Brady
thing where he's like a coach now, which is what
he is now with the Raiders. If he's sitting in
a booth with the headset on with the coaches, then
then that makes him a coach. And yet he's gonna
call games for Fox. That update on the Reds, they're
still up four to two, sixth inning, Jake Browning is
gonna talk. You'll hear that next on ESPN fifteen thirty.

(06:53):
I'm holding pattern. This is ESPN fifteen thirty. V new
starting quarterback of the Cincinnati Bengals is set to speak
with the media, or at least he is supposed to
be set to speak with the media right now, as
soon as he comes to the podium, for since there's
really not a podium, he more just sits at a table.
We'll have it for you live. Hopefully Jake is less

(07:15):
late than Joe Burrow has been in recent weeks. We
will see you heard the guy with the d voice.
Bengals and Vikings Sunday at one o'clock on ESPN fifteen
thirty and tonight, don't forget as soon as we're done,
Dan and Lamp have Bengals game plan starting at six pm.
Mitchell Tinsley will be their guest the winner of the
Moegger Show or by the way, Graham. Ashcraft got out

(07:35):
of the six sittings of the Reds still holding on
to a four to two lead over the Cardinals as
they bat in the top of the seventh inning. Reds
after losing last night three behind the Mets, New York
plays San Diego tonight. New York hammered the Padres yesterday evening,
yesterday evening. I don't know anybody who talks like that.
I'll put a dollar into the Fine Cup. Giants and

(07:58):
Diamondbacks play first pitch of that ballgame in Arizona is
twenty five minutes away. San Francisco and Cincinnati are now
dead even with each other, both three behind New York.
Arizona is a game and a half out of that
last wildcard spot. For what it's worth, the Cardinals are
four and a half back, one and a half games
behind Cincinnati. I am, legitimately and like it's Wednesday, which

(08:22):
you knew, but it's Wednesday. The game was Sunday. And
so we have spent the better part of seventy two
hours looking at the film, looking at the tape, breaking
down what happened on that Joe Burrow play, discussing Joe
and the injury from every conceivable angle. And I will
admit to you that the blame game, the wheel of blame,

(08:42):
like I'm kind of done spinning it. I am looking
for this though, legitimately five point three seven four nine,
fifteen thirty. You know when it comes to quarterback play,
I'd default to the analysis of Tony Pike because he
played the position at an extraordinarily high level and played
it very, very well. And so my first question for
Tony on Monday, before we even went on the air,

(09:04):
was is there something on that play in particular that
Joe Burrow could have done differently. I will absolutely acknowledge
that it might make sense to rethink how they design
their offense and to maybe put Joe under center more often,
like let's go, let's have those discussions, and I certainly

(09:25):
believe the Bengals coaching staff, in concert with Joe Burrow,
should have those discussions. But that one play on Sunday,
explain to me what Joe Burrow was supposed to do,
Like it's you have internet access, I'm sure that particular
play with the pocket collapsing under duress, it's my opinion

(09:48):
and it's only mine in that particular play, Like the
responsibility there is don't turn over the ball. You might
take a sack, whatever it has, whatever happens, don't turn
it over. I also understand that, like on any given play,
a quarterback could get hit, and anytime a quarterback gets hit,

(10:11):
even if he's playing behind a really good offensive line.
There is an injury risk. Like we all understand that,
we understand the nature of the sport, but on that
particular play, if the takeaway is and I don't think
it is for the majority, but if the takeaway is
Joe Burrow was complicit in his own demise. On Sunday,

(10:32):
watch the play, look at the still images if you
want what should he have done differently. Tony has outlined
this on social media. Very good video breakdown if you
want to check it out or jamar Chase on the
play doesn't get open. So what we want there is
to Joe make the one read, see a guy that's

(10:54):
not open, and throw it to him. Nonetheless, that's what
we want the quarterback to do. I don't think so
oh as the pocket is collapsing beyond doing something legitimately
reckless like hand the ball to one of the guys
who's trying to sack him. I don't know there what

(11:14):
Joe was supposed to do. And so I that was
my very first question for Tony when I saw him
on Monday. This was before we went on the air
with the Tony and Moo Football Show. The pocket is collapsing.
What is he supposed to do? I have heard folks

(11:34):
say that this is Joe's fault in some way again,
like and I said yesterday, and Paul threw it right
back at me. To his credit. I'm like, I rarely
see Joe Burrow act recklessly. And he's like, what about
the Washington game. Washington game, Joe Burrow is out of
his mind for what he was doing in that game.
I thought the Bengals coaching staff was out of their
minds for allowing him to continue to play in that game.

(11:59):
But in particularly the play where he's like going backwards,
It's like, Joe, we love you, but what are you doing? Man?
That was reckless. And maybe there have been moments of
recklessness that I simply don't recall, but that particular play
on Sunday. If the first place you'd default to is
Joe Burrow was at fault for his own possibly season

(12:25):
ending injury, explain to me what he is supposed to
do differently there, I'm all ears five one, three, seven, four,
nine fifteen thirty is our phone number. By the way,
Spencer Steeer is having himself a day. Just had a
two run knock in the top of the seventh inning.
It is now six to two Cincinnati. This is a
game they have to win. Uh. I don't know that
we need to do the math here anymore. But Spencer Steer,

(12:47):
now working on a three head five RBI afternoon, hit
a big three run homer in the fourth inning to
give the Reds a lead. I just added two in
the top of the seventh. Threads are still batting up
six to two top seven. On Getaway Day in Saint Louis,
Red's begin their final home stand of the season tomorrow
night with the first of four against the Chicago Cubs.

(13:10):
We'll throw a couple of poll questions out there here
on Twitter. In just a bit, we'll talk about the
Burrow effect with our friend Amy Wagner from Dean Dorton
coming up at four thirty, and Richard Skinner is going
to be on the show at five twenty. Jake Browning
is now officially nine minutes late. So what I want
to do is make an effort to not totally screw

(13:31):
up Barkley, because I promised i'd give you Jake Browning,
and I genuinely believe that if you're a Bengals fan,
there's a pretty good chance you want to hear from
Jake Browning today, and so I'm going to get a
break in a little bit early. Hopefully Jake shows up,
starts to talk and we have it for you, and
if not, then we'll just proceed with our normal stuff.
It's twenty five after three o'clock. This is ESPN fifteen

(13:52):
thirty Cincinnati Sports.

Speaker 4 (13:54):
Station, Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty traffic from the.

Speaker 3 (14:00):
UC Health Traffic Center. The University of Cincinnati Cancer Center
has the most comprehensive blood cancer center in the nation.
The future of cancer care is here called five one
three five five UCCC westbound Ronald Reagan Highway. The left
lane is blocked off from a disabled vehicle. That is
after I seventy five on northbound seventy one, another accident

(14:23):
between Smith Edwards and Norwood lateral on the right shoulder,
and one more accident Vine Street at Central Parkway. I'm
at exelic with traffic.

Speaker 2 (14:32):
Jake Browning right now chatting with the low local professional
football media, and.

Speaker 5 (14:39):
I think they just they change a lot game the game,
you know. I think it's a game plan defense where
you can watch all the film you want. They're going
to present some different looks on Sunday, and so it's just,
you know, how do you react to that and being
able to make the adjustment.

Speaker 6 (14:55):
So you need to makes that play so tough to
play good loud.

Speaker 5 (15:00):
Oh yeah, I was there for a while. Obviously my
Brookie year was a little bit louder than the COVID year,
but yeah, it's loud, and I got to witness that firsthand,
so very aware all.

Speaker 2 (15:12):
Those feelings that you had the first time you played
them with twenty three said out of your system?

Speaker 6 (15:15):
Now is that still kind of always in the back
of your mind a little bit?

Speaker 7 (15:17):
I think at some point you got to move on.

Speaker 5 (15:19):
And I feel as though I have moved on from that.

Speaker 8 (15:24):
How different do you feel from your first start in
twenty twenty three?

Speaker 5 (15:30):
I mean, I feel like I'm a year and a
half better than I was then. You know, I think
you don't really know until you know what it's going
to feel like, and so twenty twenty three I had
no idea what all that was going to feel like,
or you know, I kind of had to make some
adjustments on the fly. I think it's a little bit
different getting thrown in week three versus I think that
was like week eleven from a little bit closer to

(15:53):
when I was actually last live versus getting thrown in
Week eleven, I think it'd been like, you know, three
or four months since I've been in a real football game.
So yeah, I think just the experience, and you know,
I think I look at last year like I didn't
take a meaningful snap, like I had a good year
as far as you know, just watching my film and

(16:14):
practice and stuff like that. So I feel like I
made some improvements that I needed to and so uh yeah, excited,
excited for the opportunity to play.

Speaker 9 (16:21):
How comfortable are you playing in loud environments like you're
expecting to see you on Sunday?

Speaker 5 (16:28):
I mean I think I think it's I won't say
it's easier, but when you know it's going to be loud,
like you can prepare for it throughout the week. And
I think some I know, I guess this would date
back to like college would go somewhere when you think
it's not gonna be that loud, and all of a
sudden you get there, like, well, what's a lot louder
than you thought it was going to be. So uh yeah,
I mean there's no confusion about how loud it's going

(16:48):
to be. You know it's loud, and got to prepare accordingly.

Speaker 6 (16:52):
You've spent a lot of time helping Joe.

Speaker 5 (16:54):
What are some of the best ways Joe can help
you that you like for him to try to help you?

Speaker 7 (17:00):
And I think that's a Joe question.

Speaker 5 (17:03):
I think right now he's probably got some some more
important personal stuff he's probably dealing with, so you know,
happy to to. Uh would obviously love to have him
around as much as possible to totally understand that he's got,
you know, some of his own stuff going on too,
So whatever happens happens.

Speaker 3 (17:21):
Joe, and you know, you who you have, who you have,
You really don't have any.

Speaker 7 (17:26):
Place here, I would said, very far from the truth.

Speaker 5 (17:31):
I got Brett Rippon, I've known since we were like
seventeen years old, i think even sixteen. Actually went to
a Boise State camp in like twenty thirteen together, met
there and he's been around. We did draft prep together
and then so now he's he's a backup and you know,

(17:53):
has spent since some time in Minnesota last year, been
around to seen a lot of different quarterbacks and super smart.
So it's very fortunate to have him. You know, it's
just a calm presence on the song. You I even
felt that on on Sunday and so, uh yeah, I
don't think.

Speaker 7 (18:11):
I don't.

Speaker 5 (18:11):
I think it's taken for granted quarterbacks that have been
around for a long time in a lot of different
systems and just seeing a lot of different football. So
I think he provides a lot of value there.

Speaker 3 (18:21):
Yeah.

Speaker 6 (18:22):
I didn't mean anything against him, it's just that he's
been here.

Speaker 5 (18:25):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, I think he's uh, he's picking it
up and super sharp. And like I said, he's had
to go into some a decent amount of new buildings,
and so you can tell, like you just when someone
has had to learn multiple offenses, they kind of know
like here's what I got to focus on first.

Speaker 7 (18:45):
You can kind of tell that picking up pretty quickly.

Speaker 10 (18:47):
What do you remember about Brett from back from back.

Speaker 11 (18:49):
In the day.

Speaker 5 (18:52):
Uh, I just remember we were in the same class,
I think when he got here and me and him
and Joe were talking about like some of the guys
that were in our class as well, same class coming
out of high school. I remember it through for a
bunch of yards and Spokane and yeah, it was the
kind of the main thing meeting.

Speaker 1 (19:10):
Them and the players We've spoken with Jake, there's a
lot of confidence.

Speaker 6 (19:14):
In that room that you can help this team. Do
you sense that from the group.

Speaker 1 (19:18):
That's what you accomplished in twenty twenty three as a
carryer over confidence at this group.

Speaker 5 (19:24):
Yeah, But I mean I think that comes down to
how you execute, and uh, you know, I think execution
breeds breeds a lot of confidence, and so my main
goal is just to execute well, put fast, make fast decisions,
and be decisive and try and help us win. And yeah,
I mean whatever comes as a result of that or whatever,

(19:46):
however everybody's.

Speaker 7 (19:47):
Feeling right now. You know, I'm pretty focused. I'm just
doing my job.

Speaker 12 (19:51):
How does your preparation change from QB two to now
QB one?

Speaker 5 (19:56):
I have said a few times, I mean it's honestly
a little bit easier because you're the one taking the
reps and the walkthrough. You're the one that you know,
if I got input as the backup, you know, Joe
has the final say. So now that I'm starting, it's like, hey,
I kind of want to do it this way and
then more likely to get that adjustment made, getting the
reps in practice, Like you know, all last week I

(20:19):
was being I was playing Jacksonville's offense, and so then
get thrown into your offense, and obviously I know it
and all that, but it is a little bit different. And
so yeah, I think the preparation side of things is
just a lot. It's a lot easier, and it's really
I think last year it was really hard to study
really hard for seventeen straight games and not play like
at all, just fighting human nature every week.

Speaker 7 (20:41):
If like convince yourself, all right, he'd be prepared.

Speaker 5 (20:44):
Because if I get thrown in there, like I am
what I put on tape, I'm not coming into this
as like a high draft pick that's got this long
runway or anything like that. Like I got to be prepared.
And so now it's like you take out the guest
work and you just know like you're playing on Sunday.
So it's the incentive is to prepare and all that.

Speaker 7 (21:01):
It is a little bit easier.

Speaker 10 (21:02):
Just being inserted into this position now feel any different
than it felt two years ago.

Speaker 7 (21:10):
I don't know. Yeah, I don't know.

Speaker 5 (21:13):
I think last year or last time I got thrown
in was, like I said, it had been a while
since I had played. It was my first real football
game in like four and a half years, and so
I had to adjust to playing real football. And you
can play in as many preseason games as you want,
it's not the same. And so it was a little
bit more of figure this out as we go. And

(21:36):
I think now, like you know, I know kind of
things that I like and how I want to prepare
and have that experience to draw back from.

Speaker 7 (21:45):
And I think the big thing is just.

Speaker 5 (21:48):
When I got thrown in there, you know, I progressively
got better and I'm hoping to do the same thing
by just you know, having my routine that throughout the
week and you know, focusing on the right thing to
make improvements that I need to.

Speaker 2 (22:02):
Y'all are to open and go ahead, and then y'all
are to and oh but a lot of people are
wondering about whether y'all can be a playoff team.

Speaker 3 (22:07):
Still.

Speaker 6 (22:07):
Is that something that you take exception to as you
kind of step in and be the starter.

Speaker 5 (22:12):
No, I mean, I think we show business. It's like
a start listening all that and ride a roller coaster.
So I'm pretty focused on just getting ready for Minnesota.
You know, the scheme and trying to focus on that
more than however everybody feels about us at the moment.

Speaker 2 (22:29):
Is that something that you know, being a backup quarterback
and kind of always not not having the reps, Like
how much do you have to always have a good
belief in yourself?

Speaker 6 (22:36):
You know, knowing that you know you may not have
to be.

Speaker 2 (22:38):
The ability to show with how much you constantly have
to have maybe inter belief in what you can do
in your abilities more so than maybe guys would get
to play every week.

Speaker 5 (22:47):
Yeah, I mean, I think it's it's unique, Like you're
my my welcome to the NFL. Was undrafted in four
years on peace squad and there's not really anybody in
the building that's like, this is my guy. I need
to make this work because I stamped this guy. It's like, yeah,
if this guy doesn't work out, was grab another one.
And so you know, I think like if you look

(23:07):
around the league, there's not a lot of guys that
are just undrafted that kind of the same path. So,
you know, I think it's unique. But at the end
of the day, it's what have you done for me lately?
Need to go play well and pretty focused on that.

Speaker 1 (23:24):
A similar kind of question to Ben is you know
I asked about the confidence of the room. What about
within yourself knowing that you had success in twenty twenty three,
is there were a little bit of Okay, I know
I can do this at this level with this team,
that you can apply and be confident going out playing Sunday.

Speaker 5 (23:40):
Yeah, I mean I felt I convinced myself to be
extremely confident in twenty twenty three and I got thrown
in because I don't think there's been too many quarterbacks
to go a new game not feeling good about, you know,
their own decision making or ability or whatever and going.

Speaker 7 (23:54):
Having that go well.

Speaker 5 (23:56):
So if I didn't have some delusional confidence in myself
and probably would have been toasted a long time ago.

Speaker 10 (24:01):
You talk about like the volatility of being a backup
quarterback and not having not always having that frontway that
some other guys have, the fact that the Bengals have
stuck with you over the years here and have now
expressed that confidence that you not just two years ago
but now I have no problem sticking to you in
What does that mean to you?

Speaker 5 (24:21):
Yeah, I mean I think it's a balance of obviously,
like I earned that it wasn't like there's nobody else,
We'll just put Jake in. Like I you know, I
spent two years on Peace Squad here, working really hard
and showing a lot of strides and improvement, and then
obviously them having the confidence to stick with me and
giving me that opportunity. You know, I think there's a

(24:42):
lot of people that you know, maybe had my first
couple of years in the NFL that didn't make it
because you know, there wasn't somebody willing to give the
chance to that because they were worried that it wouldn't.

Speaker 7 (24:53):
Go well, or who knows what.

Speaker 5 (24:56):
And so yeah, I think it's about it's a combination
of the two of getting that opportunity and also you know,
I earned that opportunity and earned this opportunity, and so
you know, don't want to discredit myself on some of
that stuff too.

Speaker 6 (25:09):
You talked about some of the things that you like,
maybe you would recommend in a game plan. Now it
might be different. How much of that is there? Is
there a lot of that or is it just a
very minimal amount of things that you like to see
differently for you than what they were He was on
with Joe.

Speaker 5 (25:23):
I think it's played to play by play, like just
little things here and there, like hey, I kind of
I kind of.

Speaker 7 (25:27):
Would like to do this this way. All of our
base stuff is our based stuff.

Speaker 5 (25:31):
But you know, each week you've got different things that
are getting put in and so you want that especially here,
like they want that feedback from us, and so whenever
you know, I'll have I'll also voice my opinion as
the two. But at the end of the day, it's
you know, rightfully, so it's going to be what Joe
wants and so now it's it's how do you feel
about this? How do you want to do this? And

(25:52):
you know my my input is I guess taking into
account a little bit more, but I don't I mean,
if you're not in the meeting, I don't think you
would notice second games difference.

Speaker 6 (26:04):
Two years ago, like the state of guys, like the
space that we're with.

Speaker 5 (26:13):
Yeah, I guess the see Mike and Noah are probably
the newer people, but a lot of the other parts
on offense, I mean, we've got a lot of guys
have been in the system for a long time, including myself,
So I feel pretty good about that and feel fortunate
to be taking over an offense that does have a
lot of weapons.

Speaker 6 (26:31):
Sunday look back.

Speaker 7 (26:34):
Now, not really not the top of my head. That
feels like two years ago.

Speaker 12 (26:39):
We talked about all the mental reps that you take
as the backup to make sure that you're prepared. What
about physically, Like, does anything physically change for you to
make sure that you are ready to go for the
Sunday and take you know, the abuse that a quarterback
does in an NFL game.

Speaker 5 (26:53):
Yeah, I think it's just obviously I played a game
on Sunday, so you know, usually if I'm a backup,
I'm coming in Monday Tuesday, trying to like give my
heart rate up a little bit just to stay in shape.
And I stood there all Sunday. But I think when
you're the starter, you got to recover from the last game.
You're ready for the next game, and the physical toll
is obviously a lot different. So that kind of changed

(27:16):
your routine a little bit. And so kind of spent
yesterday and get my routine together and here we go.

Speaker 2 (27:25):
There it goes. Jake Browning chatting with the local professional
football media. I will say this, it is awesome to
be able to hear the questions like now I look
forward to airing those because we could hear the questions
that Jake or in last week's case, Joe are answering,
which is awesome. There you go, so Jake Browning chatting
with the media down there at the even you originally

(29:15):
idea that The bengals offensive, system they're doing What joe,
wants and this team is a result Of joe getting
what he, wants and so this is somehow his. Fault
will spend some time on, that and the defense suddenly
is in the, crosshairs and so can it be better
than league? Average we'll get to that coming up here

we extended that because there was so much to, discuss
lots of really good, stuff good, conversation good you know

(30:38):
what it. Was it was a level headed conversation With
Paul Danner junior On Joe, burrow the state of The,
bengals the offensive line and so much more. So if
you miss, that you should listen to it on The iHeartRadio.
App you could also go to my page AT espn

mike go, ahead you're ON espn fifteen.

Speaker 13 (32:00):
Thirty thank you so much more. Appreciated i'm very bullish
On Jake. BROWNIE i heard SEVERAL i heard so, early
really early this, morning about six, am and they ON
espn and they had four or FIVE qb ANALYSTS nflpb.

(32:21):
Analysts Greg cosell was one of. Them who is the
GUY i respected most when it comes to. Quarterbacks break,
then and to a, man they didn't pick A. Roppolo
they didn't Pick Trey, lance WHICH i kind of would
have based on his preseason games Behind. Herbert but they all,
said to a, Man Jake brownie is the best quarterbackup

(32:44):
quarterback in THE nfl with how hesitation A all four
of them, said or.

Speaker 2 (32:49):
Five of, THEM i haven't even thought about. That here's
WHAT i can tell. You i'm comfortable with him and
the idea behind. It the idea behind a backup to
me is he's one of two. Things either the quarterback
of your, future which that's not the case, here or
he's a guy you're comfortable, with And i'm comfortable With Jake.
Browning he's not as good As Joe. Burrow but LIKE
i go back to two years, AGO i Think jake

(33:11):
had one genuinely bad, game and if you, remember it
was A i think it was A sunday night, game
maybe A saturday night game against The steelers on the.
Road other than, that he had his moments where he
looked like a guy who was just getting his first
taste OF nfl. Experience he looked like a guy who
was a reliable. Backup BUT i think with the benefit
of the he's been a part of this system since.

(33:32):
Then he's got good guys to throw. To the. Coach
the coaching staff say which you want about, him has
a track record of knowing how to tailor and offense around.
HIM i think there's a very reasonable expectation that this
offense can be. Okay and he also has an awesome
opportunity in front of him Where Jake browning can walk
at the end of this. Season imagine he gets this

(33:55):
team to the. Playoffs imagine he plays at such a
high level that he hits free and suddenly he's coveted
as a starter and If i'm, him AND i would Imagine,
mike you would agree if you were, him you'd be
looking at it through that, lens, like all, RIGHT i
got a chance. HERE i got a chance here over
basically an entire season to show That i'm the guy
that a team should make the starting. Quarterback AND i

(34:17):
hope he takes advantage of. It And I'm I'M i
have a reasonable amount of confidence that he.

Speaker 13 (34:23):
Will seems like The saints come to my, mind you,
know like you, said you just don't. Know but he
has the golden opportunity just like a few years, ago
but now it's even better because of his. Experience, yeah
and his savvy now that he. Possesses and he's not
afraid to sling that thing. EITHER i don't. Know he's

(34:45):
about the same size Of, joe isn't?

Speaker 14 (34:47):
Me?

Speaker 2 (34:49):
Yeah you know to me you mentioned his. Experience they
won two overtime games with him as quarterback two years. Ago,
yeah so he's had to come up big in big.
Moments he obviously had to come up big in a
big moment on a day where he threw three. Picks
this Pass. Sunday nobody is going to mistake him For Joe.
Burrow but you, know, again like if you're a BACKUP

(35:13):
qb and you're getting your first taste at an extended
amount of time as the team starting, quarterback well you
could do a hell of a lot worse in the
situation That Jake browning finds himself. In and if you're
a team and you've got to turn over to the,
understudy you could do a hell of a lot worse
Than Jake. Browning and SO i, believe AND i am

(35:35):
no longer looking at this through the lens of The
bengals winning a, championship WHICH i, hate BUT i believe
That Jake browning is good enough and this team around
him is still capable enough to make this season one
that could still be at least somewhat. Fulfilling and if
that's a whole key way of looking at, it, fine
if you disagree with, that that's. FINE i still believe
this could be a fun season and the quarterback they

(35:57):
are turning to is a major reason WHY i totally.

Speaker 13 (36:01):
Agree, now And i'm with you On joe the other,
DAY i think to, it, now we know the offensive
line is, shaky the poor guys never had a great,
offensive but he kept doing that bunny hop and crap
around the other day trying to find a way to
squeeze something. In AND i think he brought it on
himself because he kept dodging and bobbing and. Weaving and

(36:22):
you can't keep doing. That something band's going to.

Speaker 2 (36:25):
Happen, RIGHT i mean, Yeah BUT i don't think that
applies to the play that he got hurt.

Speaker 13 (36:29):
On, well what do you? THINK i don't want to
know what you?

Speaker 2 (36:34):
On the play that he got hurt. On what's he
supposed to?

Speaker 13 (36:36):
Do just go?

Speaker 2 (36:39):
Down, wait, so under any, duress the quarterback is just
supposed to take a.

Speaker 13 (36:46):
Sack, no but it seemed like he was surrounded and
he would turn one way the other way and there
was no way, out and he kept hopping around every.

Speaker 2 (36:56):
Time so every time the pocket, collapses which With Joe
burrow happens often because the pocket collapsed a lot last,
year he's supposed to just take a.

Speaker 13 (37:04):
Dive, NO i.

Speaker 2 (37:08):
Don't know.

Speaker 13 (37:08):
That maybe the best way to go versus having on.

Speaker 2 (37:11):
The cart if you, want if you want, to if
you want your offense to not. Function, sure the amount
of times That Joe burrow is hit and is under,
duress we now want him to take a. Dive this
offense won't score two touchdowns a.

Speaker 13 (37:23):
Game, Okay so what were you referring to them when
you said that you Thought joe brought this on himself
to a.

Speaker 2 (37:30):
DEGREE i never said. THAT i don't believe though.

Speaker 13 (37:32):
That, no, no, NO i THINK i miscouraged.

Speaker 2 (37:38):
Ya you, Did, Mike, mike thank you for the. FUNK
i have heard many say that the injury Is Joe burrow's. Fault,
now some will say It's Joe burrow's fault because the
team is acquiesced to him in terms of how they
built the. Roster and some will say that It's Joe
burrow's fault in regards to you, know they've acquiesced to
him with how they designed the. Offense and some will
say It's Joe burrow's fault because he plays hero. BALL

(38:01):
i have absolutely no idea how you could watch the
play That Joe burrow got injured on and arrive at
the conclusion That Joe burrow's responsible for his. Injury those
other things may maybe The bengals should run a different.
Offense it's up for. Discussion bengals coaching staff should look at.
That it's up for. Discussion how they've built the, roster

(38:23):
and what they could have done on the offensive line
had they not Kept Trey, hendricksoner maybe had they not
resigned T higgins up for, DISCUSSION i don't think those
things apply specifically to that. Play it was a play
where they didn't Protect and, again like you, know if
people get tired of Me bengan on the offensive, line
if if yesterday wasn't an example of one thing happening

(38:49):
during what has been a ten year stretch of The
bengals having poor offensive line, PLAY i wouldn't be talking
about the offensive. Line but the criticism of the offensive
line is not just About. Sunday criticism of the offensive
line is about everything over the last. Decade like nobody
at the time wanted to say. IT i walked out

(39:12):
Of Sofi stadium In Los angeles the night the night
of The Super bowl after The bengals lost to The
rams and said to the people THAT i was with
three of my best. Friends we just Put Joe burrow
behind maybe the worst offensive line to ever play in
A Super, bowl and it's cost him a. Championship and
you never know when you're gonna have another crack at

(39:33):
its three and a half years. Ago so If sunday
was an, outlier you shrug your shoulders and, go, boy that.
Stinks that's bad. Luck what do you do? Now when
it is the latest example of an offensive line that

(39:53):
doesn't Protect, joe then it becomes a the topic becomes
about THE o. Line but in that play in, PARTICULAR
i do not know What Joe burrow is supposed to.
Do no. Idea four o'clock ON espn fifteen. Thirty it's
the twenty First sunday morning official home for The Cincinnati.
Bengals way, late way late for the. Hour because Like

(40:16):
I'm Jake, Browning I'm Joe. BURROW i don't know how
to read a. Clock, hey what's, Up MOEGER espn fifteen,
Thirty thanks for listening. Today red's win six two over The.
Cardinals solid starting pitching performance By Brady. Singer great day
For Spencer steer a three run homer or a three

(40:38):
run mishit five RBIs three. Hits reds are back to five.
Hundred they gain and a half game on The. Mets
New york is a home tonight For San, diego so
they're two and a half. Back The reds are right
now with The mets game tonight Pending cincinnati has closed
within a game Of. Arizona they currently lead The giants

(40:59):
by a half. Game right, Now San francisco And arizona
are playing and scoreless in the bottom of the second
inning In. Phoenix The, cardinals let's just The. Cardinals you
might not like The reds. CHANCES i don't like The reds.
Chances The cardinals ain't going to be a wildcard. Team
they're now five out Where i'm crossing them off my
little list. Here reds win the ball game six, two

(41:20):
we'll have reaction From Saint. Louis they're even up in
five hundred two and a half back as of right,
now with ten to. Go and if you're among those
of us who bet The reds season over every, year
then the magic number is now. Three some got it
at seventy nine and a. Half in, fact ACTUALLY i
had to go back and look BECAUSE i kind of

(41:40):
THOUGHT i. Did but for most, books for most of the,
offseason it was seventy eight and a, Half and so
there are three wins away from hitting. That obviously four wins.
Away if you got it at seventy nine and a,
half there you. Go The Joe burrow effect coming up
in just about twenty five, minutes Plus brennaman And jones on,
baseball and we do have to talk about The bengals,

(42:01):
defense WHICH i thought passed its first test Against cleveland
barely past their second test Against. Jacksonville i'm not entirely
sure they passed, it but they were. Opportunistic we'll get
to that here in the. Bit let's grab a phone
call or, two BECAUSE i don't want to make people.
Wait unlike The, REDS i don't make people. Wait mary

(42:22):
And Mount. Washington you're ON espn fifteen. Thirty Hi, Mary hey.

Speaker 15 (42:26):
Noo how's it going?

Speaker 2 (42:27):
Wonderful how about?

Speaker 15 (42:28):
Yourself, well you, know we are at the top of the.
Division we are two and now we got our fast.

Speaker 2 (42:34):
Start, yeah but, yes.

Speaker 15 (42:38):
But it's it's a hard pell to swallow right.

Speaker 7 (42:41):
Now it.

Speaker 13 (42:41):
IS i will say.

Speaker 15 (42:45):
Your question about whether or not to Blame Joe.

Speaker 13 (42:48):
BURROW i Love Joe.

Speaker 15 (42:49):
BURROW i Picked Joe burrow as my number one fantasy
quarterback this. YEAR i feel like he was going to
have AN mvp. SEASON i you, KNOW i was hoping
our defense would look better than it did last, year
and in the first couple of games they, Have so
that was all positive until what.

Speaker 13 (43:05):
Happened but.

Speaker 15 (43:09):
You, know one of your last callers, Yesterday mike said
something about, questioning you know the fact THAT i Love Jamar.
Chase he's a Triple crown. Winner we would have probably
never gone to the Super bowl the first time we
went if it weren't For Jamar. Chase but you know,
what if we'd Had Pennay, school Maybe joe would have

(43:31):
never gotten the first injury or the second. INJURY i don't,
know AND i don't think the organization is that everything to.

Speaker 13 (43:38):
Blame we have.

Speaker 15 (43:40):
TRIED i really get tired of national media saying it's
all about The bengals and The brown family being cheap
and this and, that and you, know blaming it because
they have. Tried like you said, yesterday we went out
and Got kapa And karris and File collins and it
just didn't. Work and we drafted high AND i don't

(44:01):
know the other really quick is a couple of. Things
joe is, amazing but maybe we need to get AN
oc that they have trusted and let somebody make the,
plays call the, plays and then he can occasionally switch.
OFF i feel like he does change the plays a,
lot and he is brilliant and he can put it

(44:23):
in tight windows and all that, stuff but he's also
not got a very good offensive. Line he has to acknowledge.
THAT i love that we have T higgins And, jamar
but guess, what you have to sacrifice something. Else so
unfortunately we've sacrificed and now we can't let him get.

Speaker 13 (44:42):
Slain, yeah that's ALL i have to.

Speaker 2 (44:44):
Say, Well, MARY i Think i'm with. YOU i think
it's completely reasonable moving, forward whether it's If joe's able
to return this year or when they start to plan
for next, season to sit down and, go, okay is
there a better way of doing things offensively that accomplis
two different. Goals one Enables Joe burrow to Be Joe, burrow,
Right that's at the end of the, day that's what everybody.

(45:06):
Wants we want to amplify his, greatness but we also
want to keep him. Healthy we all want to ensure his.
AVAILABILITY i am absolutely open minded to the idea that
whether it's With Zach taylor And Dan pitcher And Joe
burrow Or Joe burrow and other, coaches that you kind
of reimage or just rethink how you play. Offense if

(45:26):
that's put him under center, More i'm open to that.
Idea how could you not be if if that's acquire
different types of offensive linemen who are maybe better at
run blockings so you feel comfortable running the football, More
i'm here for that. TOO i certainly believe that when
you have like the same problem come up again and

(45:47):
again and again and, again you're irresponsible if you don't
think of ways to avoid having it recur even. Further
but that's not Blaming Joe. Burrow that's just asking is
there a better way of doing? Things is? There you
should always be asking, That but in, particular when you
have this this problem pop up, again how does it
not make you?

Speaker 13 (46:06):
Go?

Speaker 2 (46:06):
Okay perhaps there is a different way for us to
operate offensively that enables us to be explosive and score
a bunch of points and Lets joe take advantage of his,
talents but gives us a better chance of winning because
we're doing a better job of protecting. Him that to
me is the responsibility of the, coach and you have

(46:27):
to Fold Joe burrow into the. CONVERSATION i think you
could say, that but also not make It Joe burrow's.
Fault that he's always getting.

Speaker 15 (46:34):
Hurt, no and that's What i'm. Saying it's not his
fault he's getting. Hurt but everyone has.

Speaker 13 (46:40):
A role in. Life, yeah we have.

Speaker 15 (46:42):
The, owner we have A gm Or Duke tovin or,
whatever and then we have AN oc THAT i don't
know his name right.

Speaker 2 (46:49):
Now That's Dan. Pitcher It's Dan, Pitcher.

Speaker 15 (46:51):
OKAY i mean that's that's the sad. Thing we have
a quartersbacks, coach we Have so let's everybody do their
job and do it at the best of your, ability
and then maybe things will.

Speaker 13 (47:05):
Get a little. Better For Joe.

Speaker 15 (47:06):
BURROW i JUST i Guess i'll look forward to next.

Speaker 13 (47:09):
Year you're.

Speaker 15 (47:09):
RIGHT i just want to see A Super bowl win
someday before my gray hair is bawling.

Speaker 2 (47:16):
Out marry you and me both hopefully we get. That
thank you for the phone. Call as. Always you know
this this thing about like, BLAME i, understand like everybody's,
emotional and when you're, emotional like there's just this sort
of built in need to just blame blame, Something blame external,

(47:37):
forces blame blame things that don't Deserve, LIKE i get. It,
man when there's an emotional reaction to, something Sometimes that's
WHY i don't love hosting postgame shows BECAUSE i kind
of like to like take a second to you, know
how DO i really feel about? This and sometimes a
postgame show it's just raw, emotion and sometimes raw emotion
gets in the way of people saying logical. Things but you,

(48:03):
know the Movie, MONEYBALL i just was looking for something to,
watch like three four weeks, ago and it was On
netflix Or prime or one of the many streaming SERVICES
i have to have in order to be a sports fan.
Anymore AND i hadn't seen it in, years been years
Since i've read the. BOOK i watched, it and my
two favorite scenes are the ones where all the scouts

(48:24):
are sitting around a table and it's you, know it's
it's shot and done in such a way that it's
it's meant to sort of show like how out of
touch in old. School these old scouts are And Billy
bean played By Brad pitt and his guy played by
the dude from Super. Bad you, know they're they're gonna

(48:45):
start doing things their way and that's in contrast to
the old way of doing. Things and so they have
all these like older scouts around and they're they're they're
chewing tobacco and they're dressed like it's like they're gym
teachers from nineteen eighty and it's IT'S i think It's
those are the best two scenes in the. Film but
in one of those, scenes one of the real old,
scouts dude who looks like he's in his, eighties says

(49:08):
something to the effect of, like, hey you, know we make,
Suggestions billy makes decisions in reference To Billy bean THE
gm of The a's and the same kind of basic
principle applies To Joe burrow Because i've seen people Suggest
i've heard people, suggest, well you, Know joe got what he.
Wanted he got what he wanted with T higgins And

(49:28):
Trey hendrickson And jamari he got what he. Wanted so
somehow it's like his fault or they do What joe. Wants,
offensively it's it's he's in the shotgun all the, time
and it's spread the field and let him. Process Joe
burrow makes, suggestions it's up to The bengals to make.
Decisions so if you think that the problem is that

(49:51):
The bengals were deficient on the offensive line because they
chose to do What Joe burrow, Wants that's Not Joe burrow's.
Fault it's the people who decided to do What Joe burrow.
Wants it's their. FAULT i believe that decisions are things
you're held accountable, for not. Suggestions so this thing about

(50:15):
well you know they do Whatever joe, wants well they.
Did they could have told him no that they might
have had to deal with defaulout from. That they if
you believed what were the great misstep was was not
Trading Trey hendricks and by the, way there's validity to that.
Argument but if you believe their great misstep was not

(50:35):
Trading trey and taking his money and putting it into
the offensive line or taking the draft pick they could
have gotten from him and use that to take an offensive,
lineman and they didn't Because joe, said you got to Pay.
Trey they still could have traded. Him they made the
decision to, note by the, Way trey was awesome On,

(50:56):
sunday but they made the decision not. To that's Not
Joe burrow's. Fault there's lots of THINGS i could SAY
i want. Here if the people THAT i work for
choose to give them to, me they made the DECISION
i made the. Request decisions matter more than. Requests they're
held accountable for the decision they made to honor my.

(51:17):
Request same thing with the. Offense look, MAN i, again
LIKE i think one of the more fascinating things about
The bengals moving forward will be if they achieve a
level of success With Jake browning playing in an offense
that's not like the one they use Under Joe. Burrow
When joe comes, back how do you figure out how

(51:40):
to mesh all the stuff That joe does and loves
to do with how they've performed With. Jake and it
is entirely up to the coaching staff to figure out a,
way whether it's running the offense the way it's been
run or run the offense. Differently it is entirely on
the coaching staff to take advantage of what they have

(52:00):
With Joe burrow and enhance his ability to stay upright
and stay. Healthy it is the job of an organization
to build a team around its best. Players it is
the job of a coaching staff to install a system
around the talents of the quarterback and the players the
best players around. Him and if you can't do, that

(52:24):
that's on, you not THE, qb it's on. You and
so if they are unwilling to say To, joe hey,
man let's talk about what the offense looks. Like does
it make sense to have you in the shotgun a
little bit? Less does it make sense to sort of
rethink the kind of offensive lineman we. Have does it
make sense to rethink some of the stuff we do?

(52:46):
Formationally does it make sense to rethink how often we
have you in the shotgun just scanning the field and
going through your. Reads it is absolutely up to them
to sit down With joe and figure out a way
to ensure that they score a bunch of points and
keep him. Healthy if they cannot do, that or if

(53:06):
they're unwilling to tell, Him, joe we got to talk about,
this then they shouldn't be in the jobs they're. In
and if the big issue is they wouldn't Tell Joe burrow,
no that's Not Joe burrow's. Fault if you can't tell
your kid no and you spoil them and there's problems

(53:27):
as a result of, it it ain't your kid's. Fault
it's your fault for never saying. No, so all, right,
like let's redo the offense and maybe moving, forward if
there's a decision like trade away a guy who you
don't have long term plans for or just keep him
around for a, Year let's think about the validity of

(53:49):
trading him versus keeping him and understand that the quarterback
may not want you to trade, him and you have
to have a tough conversation with him and tell, Him, joe,
sorry we're it on From. Trey we know that's not
what you, want but here's why we're doing. It we
hope you. Understand if they're not willing to tell, him,
no that's Not Joe burrow's. Fault that ain't On. Joe

(54:11):
like it sucks beyond belief that he's. Hurt, MAN i
don't have a more semantically responsible way of putting. It and, yeah,
man like we all had such high hopes for the.
Season we've all had such high hopes for The Joe burrow.
Era it is completely reasonable to be bummed, out pissed,
off feeling, despair, desperation whatever it. Is but the reaction

(54:35):
Ain't this Is joe's. Fault it. Ain't It's joe's fault Because,
god he couldn't get out of trouble when the pocket was.
Collapsing around, him it ain't. Well joe's continually reckless and
so that's why he gets hurt because that didn't happen On,
sunday and god, knows it's not, well It's joe's fault
because they run the offense the way he. Wants, well

(54:56):
then don't and work with him and sure that you
have a system that best protects. Him it's not gonna
be fool. Proof of, course any quarterback can get hurt
on any. Play or if you genuinely believed Before joe
started to talk about who he wanted on the team this,
year this is how we want to build the. Roster
and it's gonna come at the expense maybe Of, trey

(55:19):
or maybe it might come at the expense of T.
Higgins you know, what do it and have the tough
conversation and Tell joe this is why we're doing. It
this Isn't Joe burrow's, fault, man it. Ain't this organization
has not won with. Him three times when he has been,
healthy he has put UP mvp caliber. Numbers they have

(55:41):
no ring to show for. It three times he hasn't
gotten through a season because he's gotten hit a. Lot
the common denominator in both has been bad offensive. Line
like you can get mad at me for saying. That
you could believe the narrative is too. Tired look at
it from any offensive line metric you. Prefer they've never

(56:03):
put him behind a good offensive. Line that's a bigger
deal Than Joe. Braddy joe gets what he wants late

thing About Joe burrow in his.

Speaker 2 (01:00:31):
Toe oh tell me about.

Speaker 9 (01:00:32):
This, well you know my take is always, money, right
and SO i also how does that impact?

Speaker 8 (01:00:39):
Me my husband AND i want to walk the other.

Speaker 9 (01:00:40):
Night we're going to go to The bengals game against
The bears the first weekend Of. November AND i Think
i've even brought this up to you of, like do
you buy them the tickets before the season? Starts to
wait until AND i actually, said do you think tickets are?

Speaker 8 (01:00:54):
Cheaper?

Speaker 9 (01:00:55):
Now then there's an? Injury AND i think many of us, think,
oh like our. Season BUT i also have to think
that people in The bengals front office are hearing money
flying out the window right, now because for many, fans
this is an, inconvenience a major.

Speaker 8 (01:01:15):
Inconvenience.

Speaker 9 (01:01:16):
Right we don't know what this is ultimately going to
mean for the, season but from a practical dollars in cents,
standpoint there's real repercussions. Here so you've, got you, know
marketing campaigns probably that are fully centered around the face
of this.

Speaker 8 (01:01:32):
Team now we've got.

Speaker 9 (01:01:33):
To scramble and figure out what what are we going
to market for the rest of this.

Speaker 8 (01:01:37):
Season you've got.

Speaker 9 (01:01:39):
Corporate sponsorships that are largely Around Joe, burrow our franchise.
Player also right now in, question merchandise sales also are
going to have take probably a.

Speaker 8 (01:01:52):
Dip and THEN tv ratings, RIGHT i mean.

Speaker 9 (01:01:55):
A Healthy Joe burrow on the heels of The netflix
you know series about him or the best part of,
yes right like it means people are tuning, in not
only people In cincinnati who love this, franchise but people
outside who are interested in this. Player THAT i mean
several several years, AGO i was In california AND i

(01:02:16):
had A bengals shirt. On you probably many of us
have had this experience where for years and years and
years you would Wear bengals apparel outside of the market Of.
Cincinnati literally nobody even took NOTICE i was.

Speaker 2 (01:02:29):
Walking through you would We bengal stuff In.

Speaker 17 (01:02:31):
Cincinnati no one knew even what The bengals, wait and
SO i was like walking through the airport and someone
yelled at, Me Joe, burrow AND i was, like this
is the.

Speaker 9 (01:02:43):
Most amazing thing that has ever happened to me as
A bengals fan is that people are now paying attention
to my team outside of this. Market so there is
a very real financial impact to. This SO i went
down this like rabbit hole today of injuries and the
impact on THE, nfl And i'm just going to take
you back to the, beginning because the interesting thing is

(01:03:05):
THE nfl almost never, happened, really and it almost never
happened because of.

Speaker 8 (01:03:10):
Injuries.

Speaker 9 (01:03:11):
Really, Yeah so the whole, routs or of the whole
beginning of football really started at the college, level and
in the early nineteen, hundred so nineteen oh five to be,
exact there were nineteen deaths and one hundred and thirty
seven serious injuries in one season in college. Football and

(01:03:32):
at the, time The president of The United, States Teddy,
roosevelt was this Big harvard alum who was, like don't
pull the.

Speaker 16 (01:03:38):
PLUG i love this.

Speaker 9 (01:03:39):
Sports so he actually pulled all these brilliant, people brilliant football,
minds to The White. HOUSE i don't want to think
about maybe what he could have been dealing. WITH i
don't know other economic concerns of the, country, whatever but
he really wanted to deal with the football. Problem as
the result of new regulations that came out college football.

(01:04:01):
SERVE i, mean there were programs Like duke And stanford
that pulled the plug on their programs at that.

Speaker 8 (01:04:06):
Time we're just, like we're not gonna.

Speaker 2 (01:04:07):
Gone, yeah we're not going to.

Speaker 8 (01:04:09):
Continue, yes right, right this is a dangerous. Sport we
have no.

Speaker 9 (01:04:11):
Interest, obviously there are a lot of dangers continued right
to this, sport but those regulations made football survive to
the point where THE nfl. Started now there's also some
like deep dives into how dangerous is this sport compared
to other. SPORTS i don't think it's surprising to anyone
if you are A Major league football player VERSUS, mlb

(01:04:33):
eight times more. Dangerous even hockey twice is. Dangerous, yes hockey.
Players and you want to guess where most.

Speaker 2 (01:04:41):
Of these hockey players play more? Games?

Speaker 8 (01:04:42):
Yes, well and they also like knock out each other's
teeth all the.

Speaker 9 (01:04:45):
Time, yeah, WELL i guess maybe they have more teeth
and face, injury and the number one injury for THE
nfl is knee. Injuries, YEAH i believe. That, YEAH i believe.

Speaker 14 (01:04:56):
That.

Speaker 9 (01:04:57):
Yeah now the interesting thing, is and this is the
borrow effect of it. All you AND i have talked
about the average kind of life span of a player
in THE nfl is about three and a half.

Speaker 2 (01:05:05):
Years, yes, right.

Speaker 9 (01:05:07):
So the average player loses about a game in a
quarter every season to.

Speaker 8 (01:05:14):
Injury the average.

Speaker 9 (01:05:15):
Player the average, player so typically over the course of
a player's, lifetime you're out about six. Games, okay THAT'S
i been watching you right now mentally taking how many.

Speaker 8 (01:05:26):
Games bro has been.

Speaker 2 (01:05:28):
Out there's a.

Speaker 8 (01:05:30):
DIFFERENCE i, mean it's a franchise.

Speaker 9 (01:05:31):
Player And i've even seen stats broken down by the
position where the injury. Happens and of course the larger
impact rate is two. Quarterbacks in, fact there's only been
four times that we've had an injury to a quarterback
that that team has gone on to win The Super.

Speaker 2 (01:05:51):
Bowl like a season ending, injury.

Speaker 9 (01:05:53):
A season ending injury that that quarterback didn't recover from
that a backup quarterback has taken.

Speaker 8 (01:05:58):
It now a silver lining in.

Speaker 2 (01:06:01):
This, YES i need the silver.

Speaker 9 (01:06:02):
Lining two thousand and. One who gets injured and who replaces?

Speaker 2 (01:06:06):
It drew bledsoe, yes and Then Tom brady came In
so are you Saying Jake browning Is Tom.

Speaker 9 (01:06:10):
Brady my nephews keep texting me like you better get
on the. Train, okay, right get on The browning train
because we might need to be on.

Speaker 8 (01:06:19):
It for a.

Speaker 2 (01:06:19):
While you, know we've talked a lot about The borough.
Effect it's a positive, effect, Right like The burrow effect
helps Get Brian callahan hired In. Tennessee it gets Lou
An arumo job interviews even though he was the defensive.
Coordinator it Gets Zach, taylor you, know a contract. Extension
it's gotten a lot of players who have caught passes
From Joe burrow. Paid and then there's the ancillary part of.

(01:06:41):
It the stadium conversation is different than it would have
been at The bengals still were, terrible which they were
Before Joe burrow got. Here the amount of money businesses
connected to The bengals have made on game day because
Of Joe burrow and the interest in, him and the
added playoff revenue which now you kind of wonder. About
and then so the reverse part of That burrow effect
is kind of the exact.

Speaker 9 (01:07:02):
OPPOSITE i don't think anyone's saying this, team this franchise
would have been better if there was never A Joe burrow,
here regardless of the fact that we have seen a
string of injuries that have been incredibly frustrating not only
to fans like you and, me but also back to
the dollar and cents of this to the front, office
because they could probably within a couple of hours of

(01:07:23):
that injury On, sunday start to put into, context, yeah
how much they will actually begin to lose on a
weekly basis moving. Forward you, know as fans like me are, like,
well our ticket's going to be cheaper, now but also
AM i even as excited to watch these games if
we don't have a VIABLE qb out?

Speaker 2 (01:07:43):
There, well and then one thing we, don't, Right but,
then like you, Know I've i'm going to go To
denver in a few weeks to go see him. Play
AND i know somebody who was going to, Go who's,
LIKE i don't know THAT i want to go To
denver to Watch Jake browning play?

Speaker 8 (01:07:54):
Quarterback, Right, YEAH i mean there is a change, now.

Speaker 9 (01:07:57):
LISTEN i also want to bring this back to the
normal person because you AND i aren't paid hundreds of
millions of dollars.

Speaker 8 (01:08:05):
To oh play a. Game oh, sorry that breaking news for.

Speaker 2 (01:08:08):
You for, You.

Speaker 9 (01:08:10):
I'd like to see your pay stub as soon AS
i finish this. Segment but, LISTEN i think there's a
really practical application to the rest of, us which is
whatever your paycheck, is your family is probably very reliant on.

Speaker 8 (01:08:21):
That do you have disability? Insurance?

Speaker 9 (01:08:24):
Right because if you don't and something happens where you
can no longer go to work or perform that job,
anymore huge. Problems, Yes and so one of the things
THAT i do as a financial advisor is like analyze my.
Clients do you have the proper insurance in place to
protect your family if something were to go? Wrong part
of that is life, insurance right if that paycheck is

(01:08:45):
no longer coming home because you're no longer, here but
if you can no longer, work do you have a?

Speaker 8 (01:08:51):
Plan do you have the proper?

Speaker 9 (01:08:52):
Insurance less than forty percent of us have workplace insurance
disability insurance that's one hundred percent paid for by our.
Boss so for some of us it's either not provided
or we're paying for part of. IT i think it's
really really important to understand do you have the right
protection in.

Speaker 8 (01:09:10):
Place Joe burrow's going to be. Fine he's going to be.

Speaker 9 (01:09:13):
Fine but if you weren't able to show up for
work next, week and the average injury along those lines
can be up to three, years, right the average disability
claim three? Years what's your family going to do for
three years without your paycheck coming?

Speaker 8 (01:09:27):
In if you've never thought through, THAT i think now
is a good.

Speaker 2 (01:09:30):
Time this could be you know what what compels people
to like relook at whether or not they have? Disability
and then we have a silver lining we're looking for
some borrow's turf toe made me double down to my disability.

Speaker 8 (01:09:43):
And now my family is protected.

Speaker 9 (01:09:45):
See positive to everything better than the offensive, line, right no?

Speaker 2 (01:09:50):
Question but do you have anything on offensive lines in?

Speaker 13 (01:09:52):
There?

guys that are experpiece for riders and all at the
moon about. It it's for pre, drafts you. Know and
if this was an investigation in the paper, trail just

(01:14:00):
be so obvious the indictment on like taking it more
serious and a bigger priority like they do on their
star receivers and et, cetera to pre draft even before,
that you, know at the very end of the, season
to be preemptive and try to go after a premier

(01:14:24):
guard and treat it more like, important because.

Speaker 13 (01:14:28):
This is what we.

Speaker 14 (01:14:29):
Get, man and people out here starting to AND i
understand people are upset but Doubting burrow and his process
and the way he. Plays you gotta let that dude
be who he, is you, know that's my. Opinion and, uh, well.

Speaker 2 (01:14:47):
You know you brought up agree with you brought up
with the you, know the the emphasis on wide receiver
and the fact that they're paying those two guys a
lot of, money and like, again for, me the criticism
of the offensive line isn't solely About. Sunday it's about
a recurring theme of the offensive line not being very.
Good and so what about When Joe burrow And Jamar

(01:15:11):
chase and T higgins were under their rookie contracts and
they spent money on the offensive, line they were still
below average offensive. Lines so if you want to say
in a vacuum they screwed up this, year they should
have Traded Trey. Hendrickson they shouldn't be paying the wide.
Receivers they needed to invest more in the offensive. Line
there's something that could be said about. That but then

(01:15:32):
why couldn't they build an offensive, line a good offensive
line when they actually had money because those guys were
in their rookie contracts to throw at.

Speaker 1 (01:15:39):
It, yeah AND i don't.

Speaker 14 (01:15:42):
Disagree and to be very, CLEAR i think they.

Speaker 13 (01:15:47):
Could have done all of.

Speaker 14 (01:15:48):
It LIKE i believe that they had the, money especially
the way they made a contract With Trey. Henderson do
they not still have money? Leftover they could have like
organized that and thought about the plans and done it.
All in my, Opinion and, yes they have made attempts,

(01:16:11):
to you, know go after some, people but people Like
Lyle collins or whatever name. It these couple of guys
that they brown, in they're like on their last.

Speaker 13 (01:16:21):
Leg are we.

Speaker 14 (01:16:22):
Gonna joke around about? That and to go deeper into?
It in my, opinion maybe there's an issue with evaluation
because how many times are you going to get unlucky
when you spend money and try to go after high
priority players that there has to be a deeper, eye

(01:16:44):
a more a bigger microscope looking in on this.

Speaker 6 (01:16:48):
Situation there's something.

Speaker 2 (01:16:49):
There SO i ian that's that's WHERE i. Am thank
you as always for the phone. Call that's WHERE i.
Am because we talk about their offensive line, issues and
LIKE i, Know I've i've said this a bunch of different,
times BUT i think it bears repeating in a. Vacuum
things like what happened To Joe burrow On sunday, happen
and they can happen behind a good offensive. Line it's.

(01:17:10):
Football and if if it didn't occur after an off
season of wondering about whether or not they did enough
with the offensive, line and if we haven't been doing
that for a, DECADE i don't think we're having this.
CONVERSATION i think we're Chalking sunday up to just bad
luck and one of those things that. Happens but they

(01:17:32):
have tried different offensive line. Coaches The bengals are on
their fourth one since twenty. Eighteen they've tried different head.
Coaches they've Signed Riley, Reef Orlando, Brown Ted, Carris Alex,
Kappa Trent, Brown Dalton, Reisner Lucas patrick in free. Agency

(01:17:53):
i'm probably missing. Somebody Leal collins THAT i mentioned. Him
he ended in the draft the last. Decade Cedric boy
he first round. Pick uh. Huh Jake fisher unfortunately had health.
Problems give him a pass on that. One Billy price.
Bust Jonah williams good, player not sure he ever played

(01:18:14):
like a first, rounder but a good. Player best offensive
lineman on A Super bowl, Team Jackson Carmen, NOPE A Marius,
mems we'll. SEE i think most of us are excited about.
Him Dylan. Fairchild they have, tried they've invested draft, capital
they've signed free. Agents nothing has. Worked and, again like

(01:18:37):
you might, Say sunday's. Unforgivable, okay you might, say what's
just bad? Luck it. Happens you might Blame Joe, burrow
WHICH i think is. Silly this team came perhaps as
close as it ever has to winning its First Lombardi
trophy four years, ago and it didn't because it Put

(01:19:00):
Joe burrow on the biggest stage In american sports behind
the worst offensive line that's ever taken the field in
The Super. Bowl start, there and then continue down whichever
road as it relates to the offensive line you want to.
Go So Joe burrow could have survived that hit On,
sunday limped off the, field played the rest of the,

(01:19:21):
game we would be wondering about the offensive. Line when
The bengals beat The Cleveland Browns week, one the game
almost unraveled because the offensive line couldn't Block Miles garrett
because the pass protection fell. Apart we haven't just started
to talk about the offensive line. Now it's been a
concern for both of the games they've played all offseason,

(01:19:43):
long and for pretty much the last. Decade So i'm
to the. Point for all Of Duke tobin's, successes and
he's had, some he's had. Some he's Named executive of The,
year by the, way his finger prints all over really
good rosters from twenty thirteen through twenty. Fifteen but what

(01:20:06):
he has not been able to do not because of
lack of. Effort what he has not been able to
do is put together a team that includes an offensive
line that's an. Asset and that offensive line was Blocking
Joe burrow On. SUNDAY A Duke tobin offensive line was

(01:20:28):
Blocking Joe burrow On. Sunday and behind that offensive line
that's not an, Asset Duke tobin's offensive, Line Joe burrow got.
Hurt like it or, not fair or, not this is their.
Brand the brand of The Cincinnati bengals right now is

(01:20:50):
they can't protect the most important asset in the history
of the. Franchise and until that, changes That Super bowl
trophy that they almost won a couple of years, ago
that will represent the closest they ever come to a.

Speaker 2 (01:22:15):
Uh you, KNOW I i feel Like i'm on a
hamster wheel at this. Moment how about?

Speaker 13 (01:22:20):
Yourself it's been a crazy Whatever we're at seventy two,
HOURS i mean Since Joe burrow went. Down, uh it feels, like,
yeah you're you're like. That this news cycle is all
about the tow and when's the, surgery how's it gonna,
go how they gonna bounce, back How's Jake browning gonna?
Play AND i think we've all covered a lot of
that stuff in the last seventy two, hours but we'll

(01:22:42):
wait to see how it. Unfolds On. SUNDAY i gotta tell, you,
Mom I'm i'm bullish On Jake. BROWNING i don't mean
just to poo poo the. INJURY i, DON'T i really.
DON'T i mean it. Stinks he's one of the best
quarterback in THE, nfl and there's no doubting that. PART
i was. GLAD i looked up a story. TODAY i
wrote a column on why The bangles were Copying jake
and why they made the right. Decision you remember for

(01:23:02):
twenty twenty three there's a segment that, said, well trade
him because you can get something of. Value, yeah probably could,
have but you know, what this is why you. DIDN'T i,
mean if you think you have a championship, team can
you imagine those BY i don't mean The bunce. Run
you can imagine if you go back to Those Indianapolis
colts team With Peyton manning And Jim sorgi was the.
Backup can you Meagine Jim Sword you would have had

(01:23:23):
to have started Fifteen and no offense To Jim. Sorgi
he was a nice, guy but can you imagine? That
and so you have one of the most capable backups
in THE, nfl a guy who could probably start for
a chunk of. TEAMS espn did a. RANKING i just
looked back to. THAT i THINK i came out with
the day because of because Of. Jake he was number
two on the backup quarterback. List that's pretty high praise

(01:23:45):
in my. Opinion And, dougain is He Joe. Burrow of
course he's. Not but as long as he's got all
those weapons around. HIM i trust In jake BROWN i really.

Speaker 2 (01:23:53):
DO i started my show today by, saying, look in,
life sometimes you have to make the best out of
a bad. Situation and maybe you're not looking at The
bengals through a championship lens and that's, unfortunate but they
do have fifteen games to. Go they have a. Quarterback
if you have to turn to your backup, quarterback this
is literally the best possible, situation because of, continuity because

(01:24:14):
of the guys to throw, to because of his years
in the, system because of his past, experience you couldn't
ask for any. BETTER i fully Anticipate Jake browning being
good enough for this, season and this may sound hokey
for this season to be, FUN i don't know how
it's gonna. END i also think he has a chance
to write a great, story whether it's get the team
to the, postseason whether it's put himself in a position

(01:24:37):
to start somewhere next. YEAR i Think Jake browning is
interesting And i'm as bullish on you as you.

Speaker 13 (01:24:41):
Are, yeah and to that, POINT i, mean not To
genie extra. Motivation you're now a starting quarterback in THE
nfl on a really good. Team but there's also to
your if he has a great, run however long that run.
Is you, know If burrow does come, back May burrow
doesn't come, back but If burto does come, back to
get yourself, paid, man, yes you guys have to really

(01:25:02):
go urt a huge. Payday and, AGAIN i don't know
if that's the motivating factor for. HIM i think he's
very much a processed, guy but it can't not be
part of his thought process OF i play really well,
Here somebody's gonna pay me to be their starting, quarterback
And i'm gonna go start for. Somebody and SO i
think all those things factory in AND i know there's
a sky falling. FACTION i get. IT i, mean your dude's.

(01:25:23):
Hurt he's been the dude since he got, drafted AND
i fully comprehend. That but at the same, time this
is what the NFL's. About occasionally there's a curveball that's
not even. OCCASION a lot of times there's a curve.
Ball fill it you in the. Season do you have
an answer for? That do they have an answer right?
Now backup left? Tackle probably? Not do they have answered backup?

(01:25:44):
Safety probably? Not but you know what you have an answer.
For you have an answer for the backup.

Speaker 2 (01:25:48):
Quarterback, yeah no. QUESTION i do think, though you, know
health issues become more. Amplified that, defense which we've talked, about,
well they've got to be league average now might have
to be slightly. Better and that and those THINGS i
think are going to be worth paying attention, to, sure no.

Speaker 13 (01:26:04):
Question you. Know we talked To Al golden today and
one of the things we leaned into, is you, know
them creating. Turnovers and THEN i asked about trying to
find a way to get more more pressure And al,
said that's on, me, Man he, SAID i haven't done
a good job on third downs of creating. Opportunities AND
i came back later in the conversation AND i, said you,
KNOW i want to go back to WHAT i asked.
YOU i, said is it more you blitzing? More i'm
not asking you to tip your, hand or is it

(01:26:25):
more you creating one on one. Matchups he BECAUSE i
just have to do better creating opportunities for our. Guys
and the thing THAT i come back to, Is i'm
not sure which guys you're going to try to create
that for. Now BLITZING i, mean to this, point believe
it or, Not Joseph wisi has been better than people,
think not, great but them better than people. Think trey
has been. Great Miles murphy's given you. Nothing the interior

(01:26:47):
has given you. Nothing does that mean you have to
blitz more and then put you, know a secondary that
you can argue has had its, issues it's also come
up with them and come up with four? Interceptions good for?
Them do you put them in tough? Spots so as
much AS i Hate Joe burrow getting hurt for, everybody
it does make this an interesting scenario to watch over

(01:27:08):
the next few weeks how this.

Speaker 2 (01:27:09):
Unfolds whether it be in in Late december or when
they start to prepare for the twenty twenty six. Season
what should this offense look like When joe's finally back?

Speaker 13 (01:27:21):
Functional more than? Functional you, KNOW i Think Dan pitchart's
always On, monday like he didn't want to prove the fact, that,
hey it's easy to throw to T higgins And Jamar.
Chase it's. NOT i, mean this league is not that.
Easy Or Joe burrow would have had better numbers the
first two, weeks, RIGHT i, mean wasn't Like joe was
setting a world on fire through two. WEEKS i don't
want TO i don't want to go there with Like
i'm Blaming, joe but he wasn't, great, RIGHT i mean, Numbers,

(01:27:44):
belie they'll tell you that. Story but you've got two
elite dudes to throw to in an offense that do
you think has the potential to be? Great could it
be one of the greatest With Joe?

Speaker 9 (01:27:54):
Burrow?

Speaker 13 (01:27:55):
Yes but can it be still really good With Jake?
Browning it can, SO i THINK i think as long
as you don't start suffering An Orlando brown injury To higgins,
injury uh you, Know Case bratt, whatever, all if those
start piling, up, well then, okay well then this season's probably.
Damned but if, not and these guys stay, healthy this
offense is going to put up enough numbers in my,

(01:28:16):
opinion to win a lot of. Games now, again, hey
this next five game stretch would have been hard With Joe.
Burrow so let's see What Jake browning does in this
five game stretch and if he pulls you through it
even two and, three which is gonna sound. Awful you,
know the fact you won those first two games for
a change brought you a little. Time you're scoring. Three
maybe going to those last you, know handful of games

(01:28:37):
going to the bye week tie me up for. THAT
i think you're you're being a Great if you've got
to six and three at the, bye it's not even
five and four to sixth grade at the. Buye If
i'm A bengals, Fan i'll Say i'll go five and.
Four that's probably.

Speaker 2 (01:28:49):
Fair so on one thousand, percent you will hear folks
say that that with With Joe burrow behind, center there's
too much with the way they run their offense because
they're doing the way they're doing things the Way joe
wants in the, shotgun you, know let him spread the,
field make his, reads do what he's got to do pre,

(01:29:11):
snap and make the. Throw are you do you side
with the school of thought that, says When joe is
back that it's time to put him under center and
basically reimagine the way they they operate. OFFENSIVELY i do.

Speaker 13 (01:29:26):
This that's a great question BECAUSE i thought When jake
came in in twenty twenty, three you'd see more in
corporation of that the next, year, like, okay we've unlocked some,
things AND i think he did a little. Bit BUT
i THINK i roll with what my guy's comfortable, with
and maybe you incorporate a little more of under, center
a little more of play, action a little more of

(01:29:47):
turning your back to the. Defense But I'M i think
the one THING i would do is probably less five man.
PROTECTIONS i know the narrative now is the offensive line
is to blame for, this AND i don't like that.
NARRATIVE I i Thought zach gave a great answer to
that On, monday Like paul Eleven and if you go
back and look at the, play and you probably have
mo a couple of wide receivers couldn't get all. Jams

(01:30:08):
joe looked at both real, quick couldn't find, it and then, Decided,
okay Now i'm gonna buy some. Time and he's been
so great on. It remember last year the match Was
Joe burrow and unscripted. Plays what a great player he,
is and look at all the big, plays and he
was and that was a big part of what he
wanted to try to. Do and so he even talked
on whatever it was last Week, wednesday of you, KNOW
i should have used my feet more In. CLEVELAND i
got to do that, more and he tried and it didn't,

(01:30:30):
work and then the offensive line gets the, blame And
joe deserves as much as the, blame probably not as,
much but he deserves a chunk of the blame for.
That but back to your original, QUESTION i think if
that's what he's best operating in and you know what
he's at his best and what he can, DO i
go back and lean into it and just go you know,
What football is a risky, game and occasionally bad stuff,
happens And i'm gonna live with the risk because the

(01:30:52):
reward is really, good.

Speaker 2 (01:30:54):

here's here's a. Question how has the game planning changed
With jake Bing as we say these DAYS qb one.

Speaker 19 (01:36:32):
Not not much different than we normally go. Through you,
know you still go through your. Process every defense is.
Unique so it doesn't feel like we've really had a
totally normal week, yet you know you Have week one
all the unknowns that come.

With That week.

Speaker 19 (01:36:46):
Two, Jackson, well LIKE i said the other, day new,
coordinator what is his? Identity what's he waiting to show?
Us minnesota has always been a very unique. Deference it's
not you. Don't no one else really runs What minnesota
runs on, defense so that's very.

Speaker 2 (01:36:59):
Unique There's Zach taylor on that particular. Topic here's the
head coach of The beckles on how important it is
to be more effective in the run.

Speaker 19 (01:37:08):
Game, well we just want to continue to find ways
to win and put points on the. Board so whatever
that looks like you you'd love to have the. Balance
i'd love to rush for two hundred yards when it's.
Available we're just going to keep doing the things we
got to do to move the ball down the field
and help our.

Speaker 7 (01:37:23):
Team wind of, SUMMARIZE i, know, YEAH i.

Speaker 19 (01:37:28):
Know last week you like to be Better cleveland as.
Well tough rush. DEFENSE i Think, CLEVELAND i Mean baltimore
average two point. One we averaged two point. Zero so
that's been a tough defense to go. Again so, again
as we continue to create our identity as we go
through this early part of the, season that's something we've
got to be better. At i'm not making an excuse for.
That we need to be better in the run, game
better really in all. PHASES i didn't feel like we

(01:37:50):
started fast enough last. Week you, know we got off
to a rookie start with the. Three, now that's really.
Unacceptable so there's a lot of things we can continue
to grow and start the game faster and hopefully finished
like we just.
