are at home, you at least have BYU in your
own building. It really becomes it really comes plausible, not
that it's not already, but it really becomes plausible that
we are talking about the Bearcats playing in the Big

the path becomes clearer. And if you're playing the Big
twelve championship game, you can win the Big Twelve. And
if you win the Big Twelve, you're gonna be a
playoff team. And nobody would have imagined those scenarios unfolding
back in July. First things first, they got to play
a good Utah team that just destroyed Colorado, that's really
good at running the football, that's really good at getting

we are though. This is the sixth season of Joe
Burrow in Cincinnati, clearly in his prime. Clearly in his prime. Uh,

and we're talking about the Bengals needing to blow it up, coaches,
front office, roster, starting from scratch. You talk about one
of the ultimate organizational failures. Now, yes, they've had team
success during the Borough era. We know what they did, right.

I don't need to remind you they played in a
super Bowl four years ago. I don't need to remind
you they played in back to back AFC championship games.
But like, this is the blood that is on this
organization's hands. And I make it about Duke Tobin because
at the end of the day, he's the guy in
charge of the roster. Within whatever parameters ownership dictates, still

he's in charge of the roster. Things have gotten so
bad that you could legitimately talk about needing to clean
house and start from scratch with your starting quarterback, with
your franchise guy going into his seventh season and having
no championship to show for it. That's where things are,

man like, That's that is an awful place to be.
And by the way, like the idea when you have
Joe Burrow and you pay Joe Burrow is to compete
for championships. It doesn't feel like they're competing for a
championship this year. They seriously didn't compete for a championship
last year or the year before. Do you know how

much work it's going to require, how much is going
to have to happen, and how much is gonna have
to go their way as a franchise to get back
into the legitimate championship conversation at any point in the
somewhat near future. And by the way, if you go
back to before this season, I think a lot of us,

most of us thought this was gonna be a playoff team.
I think most of us believed Burrow plays seventeen games,
they're a playoff team. I don't know anybody who had
him in the Super Bowl. I think most viewed them
as a playoff team. But not among the leagues elite,
not among the teams that you talk about going into
the season as having legitimate chances of winning the title.

That was before Burrow got hurt. That was before we
saw the fruits of Duke Tobin's non labor with the defense.
Now we're talking about like starting from scratch. You could
find different opinions on Zach Taylor and the coaching staff
and Duke Tobin. But it certainly does feel like, no
matter what, they're gonna have a lot of work to
do this offseason, so much work that I think you

have a hard time getting to a place where you go,
you know what, July August of next year, I've got
this team in the championship discussion. It just it feels
like there's so much farther away than they need to
be at this stage of the Burrow era year six
going into year seven. By the way, I did not

do that intentionally. Ten after three o'clock. A shred of
good news here for the Bengals. So Joe Flacco did
not practice yesterday. He's got the a seed joint sprain
in his throwing shoulder. We'll have one of the experts
from Ortho Sinsey with this in the five o'clock hour
to talk specifically about that injury and maybe a little
bit on Trey Hendrickson as well. Zach Taylor yesterday said

fifty to fifty, said, you know, we'll kind of see
what we can get out of him tomorrow. Obviously the
media down there cannot watch all of practice. But Joe Flacco,
I'm reading here from our guy James Rapeene's website Bengals
Talk dot Com that Joe was seen throwing like normal
with his teammates and kind of going through his standard

throwing routine after the team stretched to get ready for practice.
So that's good news. That's a step in the right direction.
I'm kind of curious if Joe Flacco plays what limitations
will he be dealing with whatever they shot him up
with toward the end of the game on Sunday. Is
there are a double dose of that? And how long
will the leash be for Joe? And if it's short,

do we think they have a chance of winning the
game with Jake Browning playing extensively. We will see, We

is like the hardest working person at ESPN. I hear
in the mornings before our pregame show on Sundays on

and she's She's doing live hits from wherever the Bears

are playing. She's on Clinton and Friends. She obviously covers
the Chicago Bears for ESPN. She's the pride of Indiana
University and kind enough to talk Bengals Bears with us
for a few minutes. Courtney, It's good to have you.
Good afternoon. How are you? I'm great? How are you
doing doing well? I'm sitting there on Sunday morning, thinking, man,
the Bengals are going to beat the Jets and Chicago's
gonna beat Baltimore and it's going to become a two

(11:20):
team race in the AFC North. Obviously, neither of those
things happened. What went wrong against not Lamar Jackson and
the Ravens last Sunday for the Bears.

Speaker 8 (11:29):
Yeah, they kept committing these like horrible penalties and they
were flagged eleven times last week. So when you get
in the red zone, your tight end false starts, it's
third and five and Caleb Williams takes a sack, the
left tackle gets beat off the edge, Like you're not
going to come away with many points in the circumstances,
and like they were moving the.

Speaker 9 (11:49):
Ball well in the first quarter, Like.

Speaker 8 (11:51):
They had more first downs, more plays than Baltimore had combined,
I think Baltimore in three plays. Yet they were in
a situation where they just cannot come away from the
red zone with anything more than a field goal. They're
one of three last week, and I think that killed them.
That's killed them against you know, good teams this year,
it's killed them against some not so good teams. And

(12:11):
that's become a problem here. That has been an alarming
trend that they're trying to fix. And you know, it
boils down to a lot of different things. Red zone
efficiency isn't just get down there and score, it's how
are you doing it? And when you're putting yourself behind
the chains because of false starts. And I hate using
the same cliche phrasing, but the use that they use
here that everybody's not on the same page, Like I

(12:34):
don't know how you fix it, Like you're nine weeks
into this thing, Like the fact that you've been using
the same excuses since training camp is kind of ridiculous,
And at some point it becomes indicative of how it's
coached and who these players are.

Speaker 1 (12:47):
Man, it sounds an awful like like you're talking about
our team, Courtney. Yeah, uh so you have red zone issues.
They're amplified when you have injuries at the wide receiver spot.
Who's Caleb Williams going to be throwing to on Sunday?

Speaker 8 (13:01):
So DJ Moore, Roma Junsday and Alamide's a Kias were
practicing today. They were limited, but that's a good sign
because they were without four receivers yesterday. Like it was
a real thin group and I don't think that that
is going to be the case on Sunday. DJ Moore
doesn't miss games. You remember, he had a groin injury
against Washington, was in the hospital for a night, and

(13:22):
then ended up playing against the Saints the following you know,
six days later. So that guy is an iron man.
Roman Junsay hasn't missed time for an injury. And I
know he's only played you know, what is it like
twenty four twenty two games.

Speaker 1 (13:36):
In his career so far.

Speaker 8 (13:37):
But he'll you know, he's gonna play this weekend. I
have no doubt about that. Poke Met comes back, so
you get another tight end back in the mix. Somebody
who missed his first game since he was drafted by
the Bears in twenty twenties said it was really weird
watching a game on TV last week when he had
not The last time he watched a Bears game on
TV was when he was still a student at Notre Dames.

(13:59):
So that it's a good sign for the offense that
health is trending in the right direction. They frankly don't
have that many problems health wise on offense. It's defense,
given why they just signed CJ. Gardner Johnson, where they're
pretty thin right now at the cornerback position. But Tyree
Stevenson will be coming back this week. He was a
full participant in practice and with Gardner Johnson feeling that

nickel role, I anticipate he will be playing this weekend.

Speaker 1 (14:25):
That way, Courtney cron is with us from ESPN covering
the Chicago Bears. How would you encapsulate Caleb Williams season
so far.

Speaker 8 (14:34):
Been up and down, which I know is is not
a great way to describe it, But there have been
good moments. I know that nationally people want to look
at this and think, God, he's not Jayden Daniels, He's
not Drake may He's.

Speaker 9 (14:45):
Terrible, He's not Bonicks.

Speaker 8 (14:48):
It's taken a long time, and I don't need to
go down the hindsight game of like would they have
done it differently, would they have chosen somebody differently? This
is the quarterbacks they have in the quarterback that they're
going to try to make it work with. There have
been moments where you have seen Caleb put it together
and put down some you know, touchdowns, you know, put
some together some touchdown drives that have looked impressive. Has

he done it against the best defenses, not really, but
like the Raiders win, he got them in position there
at the end of the game, they were able to
walk it off with a blocked field goal. He got
them in position to walk it away with a made
field goal. The following game against the Washington Commanders. They
haven't put teams away yet. That's what you need to
see the next step of Caleb Williams growth. Can this

(15:32):
team outside of that Dallas game against that defense which
looks like the Bengals defense right now? Can you do
it against a good, respectable defense where you leave nothing
in doubt and you win the game because of Williams,
not in spite of him.

Speaker 1 (15:46):
Well, he's not going to get that opportunity against the
Cincinnati defense on Sunday Courtney. As you will know, where
has Ben Johnson put his fingerprints on this organization.

Speaker 9 (15:55):
I think there's been.

Speaker 8 (15:56):
A culture shift here that's kind of like the easy
thing to say, where there is an accountability factor, like
I thought, you know, Ben kind of throwing his hands
up last week about the penalties, being like, look like
we're coaching it a certain way. I'm putting it on
the players now like they're months into this thing. You
go back to the first practice where he's throwing the
first team offense off the field during a day where

(16:17):
they weren't even in pads at training camp because they
couldn't get lined up properly. Like that's the intensity that
he brings to practice, and I know that that's continued
on and that's what players have asked for. So the
accountability factors there, the professionalism factors there, and I mean
I even say that with accountability, it goes back to
him too. Like the issue last year with the coaching

(16:38):
staff with Matt Eberflus is that when there were mistakes,
the coaching staff tried to talk their way out of
having to take accountability of it. Ben Johnson last week
that I didn't like the call that I had and
QB sneak was a bad call at the goal line
because they didn't have any timeouts left and they've wasted
time off the clock. He's taken blame for not getting
the run game going. He takes it very personally because

(16:58):
he spends more time there than he does of the
passing game. But there's just a lot here that feels
a little different, like there's an adult in the room
when it comes to Ben Johnson and what his coaching
staff has has brought in. But I think from that too.
You've seen creativity injected into this offense. It's just can
they do it on a more consistent level because we
have been told they use tight ends a lot in

(17:19):
Ben Johnson's offense. I haven't seen that you drafted a
guy tenth overall in Colston Lovelin, like look at Tyler
Warrens stats, look at Colston Lovelin's big difference, and I
just think that that's a growing You know, that's Ben
Johnson learning as a play caller and as a head coach.
You're responsible for more than just the offense. So it's
making sure you can manage all of those things and

(17:39):
still inject the creativity that you saw, you know, routinely
over four quarters of a game with much different personnel
in some areas, but also being able to get more
out of guys that might be lesser personnel. And you know,
he's he's been a big proponent of this run game.
He feels that these guys are the ones that he
can work with. It's not Tamer Gibbs, it's not David Montgomery.
But they did have two games back to back where

(18:02):
they ran the ball effectively, and I think it's been
showing that he can make it work with who they
have to work with right now, and not making excuses
of I'm going to force them to learn my offense
and trying to work things around to make it easier
for certain players.

so I know it's a little different they're in the NFL,
but that performance, the effort and the execution by the
defense was embarrassing.

We will discuss the Bengals in their game against the

in Salt Lake City, Cincinnati, the Bearcats big dogs on

Yep, and we don't know who's gonna play. What did
Kyle Whittingham do If he was in the NFL, he
would be fined millions for keeping things under wraps. He
was doing it last year all year, He's doing it
again this year. We don't know who we're going to
see here. Probably not a game I'm going to give
out to my clients unless Dan Pear is going to
be the quarterback, and I know that probably five or

ten minutes before the game.

But I'm afraid of the defense here.

There's a tough place to play at ben in the Stadium.
Only seven turnovers, one interception, six fumble recoveries in eight games.
They're going to have to do better than that. And
I think this Utah team finally starting to come together.
They had one horrible game against BYU and also didn't
play well against Sexistech.

But this is still a.

Quality team and they're a wonky offense. You can't figure
them out. They do a lot, they add lib but
it works for him here. I hate to say it,
but I like Utah thirty four to twenty.

in the Jim Knowles revenge game against Penn State.

Yep, yeah, that is a huge advantage. This line would
have been probably six or seven tops if things had
gone the way that most people thought it was to
begin the year. But Jim Knowles knows a lot even
he knows their defense, so he's been in on the meetings.

He's going to feed them all kinds of stuff. No,
I don't think there's a whole lot of bad blood,
But the bottom line here is that knowledge. Also. Ethan Grunkenmeier,
the quarterback, wanted to play for the Buckeyes. He grew
up close to Ohio State, was passed over twice by
the Buckeyes.

Penn State offense is going to be able to run
the ball some. I just think that twenty and a
half is too much here. I have Ohio State winning
thirty to twenty, but I'll take the twenty and a
half points. I think Penn State's going to get him

Yeah, I'm with you there, despite all the upheaval least

And Chicago. I mean, they started that game great last week,

know this defense is terrible and Al Golden might want

calls either, but now we know that they got problems

show Flacco also being stationary and a little banged up
isn't going to help him out in this defense for Chicago,
they create turnovers. I hate to say it, wrong team

Well, the attitude and the effort is great, you know.

this process. I mean, it's certainly never ideal to add
twelve new players, but you know, I think whenever there's
a coaching change now that's going to be more frequent,
you know. But they've been very, very consistent with the attitude.
The effort's been really good. Now now it's about the
execution and just like what goes into winning collectively as

(26:56):
a group, and you know, that's what we're going to
have to figure out kind of on the fly, you know.

Speaker 2 (27:00):
So it's a challenge, but it's a fun challenge.

Speaker 1 (27:03):
What are you looking forward to finding out about your
team starting on Monday?

Speaker 11 (27:08):
Well, I mean, certainly getting the win, you know, we
can't take anything for granted as we as we build
this thing, and you know, it's it's you can't reference
back to the past of last year. I can only
really do it with Philip Rvichi and Jova Malichvis who
were on my team last year New Mexico.

Speaker 2 (27:25):
So you know, it's all kind of it's a blank canvas.

Speaker 11 (27:28):
But you know, can we put together a great game
plan over the next couple of days for Maris? You know,
Maris is a team with some returners, so it's a
team that won twenty games last year, So we can't
take anything for granted.

Speaker 2 (27:41):
And you know, we've just got to We're.

Speaker 11 (27:44):
Starting at the bottom right now now and we're gonna
have to earn everything.

Speaker 1 (27:47):
So what you're doing is difficult, right And I could
say that, but take me and take me inside. What's
been the most difficult part of trying to form a
team together with twelve guys from other places.

Speaker 11 (28:01):
I always say, the biggest difference between where I was
at in the stage in New Mexico and where I'm
at the stage in Xavier is just the confidence of
the group, you know, I think, and it takes time
to build that We were in my last year or
two at New Mexico extremely confident. You know that we

(28:24):
can meet anybody, and that's because we were able to
beat some really good teams, you know.

Speaker 2 (28:29):
So it's you can't really fake it.

Speaker 11 (28:31):
You know, as a coach, you've got to put them
in a position to succeed, but they need to see it,
they need to feel it. And you know, it's like
anything else that you do. You taste a little bit
of success, you want more of it, you know, so
you do your very best to kind of draw from
past experiences, but they're going to have to go through
it collectively as a group on the court.

Speaker 2 (28:54):
And that's why.

Speaker 11 (28:55):
You know, as many of these early games as you
can play, they're really really beneficial for.

Speaker 1 (28:59):
Your I know you want to play fast, can you
with this bunch?

Speaker 2 (29:06):
Well, I would tell you this. Everybody says they want
to play fast.

Speaker 11 (29:10):
Everybody says it, but when it's time to do it,
it's not as easy.

Speaker 2 (29:14):
And that's what I've seen.

Speaker 11 (29:16):
You know, what I've drawn from the two exhibition games
was fatigue was absolutely a factor. So whether that's for
me as a coach, Okay, we got to get them
out of the game, or the player needs to push
through it a little bit. That's kind of the balance
that I'm trying to figure out right now.

Speaker 2 (29:32):
So you know, we've got we've got a lot of guys.

Speaker 11 (29:35):
That are injured, interchangeable, so I think maybe early in
the year I'm going to have to sell a little
bit more, which is fine. But you know, it's certainly
the style that we want to play. But you're going
to have games where you're playing too fast, and I
think the thing you're trying to figure out or explain
to them is we do want to play fast, but
that does not mean that we want to shoot fast.

Speaker 2 (29:58):
That does not.

Speaker 11 (29:58):
Mean that we want to be, you know, all over
the place defensively. But certainly tempo is a big part
of our game plan.

Speaker 1 (30:05):
No question about that. Richard Patino is with us. The
Musketeers begin year one of the Richard Patino Era on Monday,
hosting Marist. That is a seven to fifteen tip off
at the Centas Center. I think a lot of what
you're talking about to me sounds like trying to find
out who can do what and who can do what
in actual games that the count. How how fluid are
the roles on your team with the opener less than

(30:28):
a week away.

Speaker 11 (30:30):
I think they're very fluid right now. I mean I
would say I have switched lineups. You know, we didn't
do a lot of practicing over the summer. Who's more
install stuff and you know, skill development. But I think
everybody's got to be ready. You know, our system offensively
is pretty interchangeable, where like ones, twos, and threes are

(30:50):
all kind of the same, and the fours and the
fives are kind of the same. But yeah, I mean,
everybody's so unproven that I'm going to have to be
you know, I'm going to have to be open to
giving everybody a shot early to see kind of what
they have.

Speaker 1 (31:07):
You talk about playing fast, I know there's also a
way you want to play defensively. Right you're always putting
ball pressure on opposing team's high turnover margin at New Mexico.
Are you able to replicate that style on the other
end with these guys.

Speaker 2 (31:20):
That's a work in progress for sure. You know.

Speaker 11 (31:23):
Last year at New Mexico we've built you know, we
were nineteenth in the country and defense, which is obviously terrific.
The year before we were twenty three in defense. So
you know, we're certainly working towards that. You know, I
think we can certainly block more shots than we've done,

(31:44):
you know, and again we want to turn teams over,
but not at the you know, expense of good solid
defense either. So you know, it's we're trying to speed
up the ball, we're trying to get it to the
rim and then disrupt it at the rim. But you know,
I would say the first two games were definitely not

(32:05):
where we need to be with that.

Speaker 1 (32:06):
What are the twenty four to forty eight hours before
a season openerfe for you?

Speaker 11 (32:15):
You know, the good part about the exhibition games is
you kind of get out of the way about, Hey,
this is what the game, the routine is going to
look like. You know, this is the time we want
you at the arena, this is what time we want
you on the.

Speaker 2 (32:27):
Court, all those things.

Speaker 11 (32:28):
But you know, by the time you get to the game,
the hey is kind of in the barn, so to speak.
You know, you've done all your your scouting and your preparation,
and you know, you go shorter and shorter with your practices.
You know, you really try to keep it as light
as you possibly can game before so that everybody's healthy
and ready to go. But I think more than anything,

(32:50):
it's building confidence. But the way that you building confidence
is obviously through preparation and hard work in practice. So
you know, for me personally, it's just getting my mind right.
You know, I asked them to be at their best,
and you know I also need to be at my best.
So just blocking out all distractions, whether it's you know,

(33:10):
media obligations, tickets, all those things, so that game day
we can really relock in on getting a win.

Speaker 1 (33:17):
You mentioned the preseason. It's it's been interesting to watch
college basketball evolve where you know, the exhibition season used
to be a couple of games against you know, traveling
squads of former college players, athletes and actions squads like that,
and then D one teams could play D two teams,
and then we have the era of secret scrimmages, which
would you guys still do even though we're not supposed

(33:37):
to know about them, And now we're playing full scale
exhibition games high major versus high major in some instances.
If I made you college basketballs are, what would the
preseason look like?

Speaker 11 (33:49):
I would say three to four exhibition games. You know,
I think they're really really beneficial. You know, if I
was in charge, of everything. I'd probably say the more
that you play, the less media and fans start to understand,
they start to realize, like they don't really mean anything.
I think the beauty of college basketball is you don't

(34:09):
play eighty two games, so every game counts. The tough
part right now is you know, you have the social
media outrage if you lose a game, You've got the
media coverage because it is kind of cool, like, you know,
you see some cool games and you want to but
like the coaches are not really trying to win. They're
tinkering with things, they're they're playing different lineups.

Speaker 2 (34:30):
So you know, if I had my way, it would be.

Speaker 11 (34:33):
Let's go play four of them and let's all collectively
understand that the games don't mattter, you know. But that's
obviously tough to get people to figure out because they're
excited about it and they're eager to talk about their teams.

Speaker 1 (34:48):
You were kind enough to join me the day after
you were formally introduced as a Xavier's head coach. So
it's been seven months. What have you come to learn
about Xavier University and the men's basketball program.

Speaker 11 (35:02):
I think the biggest difference professionally for me. Now, I
went to Providence College, so that was a school very
similar to Xavier and size and no football. But it's
the no football thing that is really really different. We
are the football program to Xavier University, so it's a
big deal.

Speaker 2 (35:22):
And you know, when you're.

Speaker 11 (35:23):
At these football schools, you kind of understand the give
and take of you know, football needs some more resources
and you understand it because it's an expensive sport to run.
So just the dynamic of not having football being at
a smaller school, that's definitely been unique.

Speaker 2 (35:46):
You know, you used to have kind of.

Speaker 11 (35:48):
You would have your fall schedule, You're going to these
football games, You're bringing recruits into those things, and it
really would take up a whole day, where now, whether
it's recruiting visits or just your weekend schedule certainly feels
a lot different.

Speaker 1 (36:04):
Makes sense. I can't thank you enough. I know you
got a full plate. Best of luck on Monday and
all season long, and hopefully we can do it occasionally
as a season on folds.

Oh no, to start this off, nor so, I was
on with a Utah radio station earlier today. Okay, and
and they open with, you know, Chad Cincinnati. It's a
great story and all, but I don't know what to
make of them. I look at their schedule and they
haven't beaten anybody, and I don't know if anybody's gonna

(39:40):
tell them or not. But Utah played two good teams.

Speaker 2 (39:46):
And they've lost to both of them.

Speaker 12 (39:48):
Does that seem like an odd starting point for you
for them to come at.

Speaker 1 (39:52):
Me with that somewhat? I do think. I do think
there's I think it's kind of what makes game on
Saturday interesting. I think it's a weird starting off point
for a conversation, but I think there's a legitimate sense
of like, all right, you see has a good record,
they're an improved team, and there's lots to like about it,

(40:14):
but there's a hesitancy to include them in a larger
discussion about the Big Twelve championship until they win a
game like the one they have in front of them
on Saturday, And if they do that, then the conversation
goes into hyperdrive. But I think when you've gotten through
this much of the conference schedule without a loss, I

(40:35):
think that to a degree offsets the they haven't played
anybody think because it's hard to win in league play.

Speaker 12 (40:42):
I agree, I just I felt it was a little
like it was kind of a and the rest of
the interview was good, like the guys were good, but
like we're starting there like and Utah Like, we don't
know a lot of Well, maybe we do.

Speaker 2 (40:55):
Know about Utah.

Speaker 12 (40:56):
They've played two good teams or lost to both of them.

Speaker 1 (40:58):
Yeah, I'm surprised the number is as hefty as it is.
Quite frankly, I thought Cincinnati would be underdogs. I thought
it'd be a touchdown, maybe seven and a half. It's
climbed to ten, ten and a half depending on where
you go. So this is a pretty uphill battle. What
is the biggest part of the challenge on Saturday?

Speaker 12 (41:16):
Can they be who they've been? And what I mean
by that is they haven't let Britain and Soursby get
sacked two on the ear. They haven't turned the ball over.
I mean it's been a it feels like it's been
forever since Cincinnati had a kind of careless turnover that

(41:36):
really hurt them. Special teams has been awesome. They've been
winning field position, Like you know, I love that SAT
hasn't gone to the cliches as much as we've heard
here in the past. But this is the epitome of
complimentary football, right Like defense keeps the other team out

(41:58):
of the end zone, offense takes care of the ball.
Special teams is dominant. Offensive line is awesome in you know,
the in the in the run and the pass game.
Like these are the reasons that Cincinnati is winning. They
don't have overwhelming talent, but other than some penalties, mo,
I don't recall a Cincinnati team being this clean through

(42:24):
eight games. Like it's been enjoyable to watch because they
don't hurt themselves. And it felt like for two years
that's all we talked about, is can this team stops
shooting itself in the foot, and if they could, it
felt like they could be pretty good. You're right, stop
shooting themselves in the foot. They're having a great year.

Speaker 1 (42:41):
Yeah, no, no doubt about it. The offensive line play
and the ability to not turn it over. It's remarkable
how efficient you can be when you have those two things.
How worrisome is Utah's running game.

Speaker 12 (42:55):
Worries them? I mean they use they essentially use six
offensive line an all game. They have a tight end
that's on the injuryy board. He was a defensive lineman.
They moved him to tight end. He is essentially an
extra offensive lineman. If he plays, you're just gonna it's unbelievable.
Like it's funny watching this guy play is like a

(43:19):
six offensive lineman. He just destroys people. He goes in motion,
just keeps on running, and just plows into a linebacker
in one hundred miles an hour. I don't know, like
I think the thing for me and probably everybody. What's
the snap counted downtake Orleans. If it's forty forty five snaps,

(43:41):
I feel pretty good. If it's twenty seven snaps, I
don't feel as good, and it's probably better off listed
as like a percentage, right. If it's fifty sixty percent
of the snaps, I feel great about them being able
to limit the run. If it's twenty five, thirty, thirty
five percent on the snaps, I don't feel nearly as

(44:01):
good because he just takes up so much attention, so
much space, and you're playing a team that, I mean,
most of their offensive line is going to be in
the NFL. This is one of the best offensive lines
in the country. They're massive, and stopping them is really,
really difficult. This has been outside of Oklahoma State and

(44:26):
Bowling Green a pretty good run defense, but they haven't
faced anything like this.

Speaker 1 (44:30):
I am way late, so I don't have a ton
of time do I assume Evan Pryor is not going
to play.

Speaker 12 (44:36):
Yeah, that's a fair assumption. Hopefully they will have him
back by the Arizona game. And I can't believe what
you've done to me in the last two segments.

Speaker 2 (44:46):
Now what what.

Speaker 12 (44:50):

to watch the Bears game out where I live in Portland,
so I can watch my Bears similar spot maybe to
the band. I'm not convincing the Bears this year and
Dangles obviously having a tough time as well, so we'll
see both teams need to win.

Speaker 1 (46:29):
I think no question about that. FC Cincinnati needs to win,
and I know they did one nothing in the series.
I don't want this to go to a game three.
There's too much bad history with Columbus. Close the deal.
The good news is I felt like I felt like
they were really in control on Monday night. Right Columbus
possesses the ball a lot, FC Cincinnati was able to

(46:51):
limit that. It didn't feel like once they scored, like
they were hanging on for deer for deer life, like
if you're you want to win, but if you kind
of want to make a statement that you know we
can win the East, I thought they did that.

Speaker 11 (47:02):
I agree with you, Mo, I think that Columbus were
not as dangerous as we're used to them being. And
the Cincinnati fans know better than anybody what's these Wilford
Nazi Columbus Crew teams look like at their best in
the attack where it's the letless and it's rampant, and
to your point, even if you beat them, you're.

Speaker 9 (47:20):
Just kind of hanging on. And it wasn't the case.
On Monday night. Cincinnati were really good.

Speaker 11 (47:26):
I thought they got everything right from a tactical perspective,
and they were able to neutralize Columbus, who also to
be fair or missing their new designated player striker number
nine with Sama Bua Lee, and I feel like the
attack didn't have that fight without him and he's still
out for least game two, and then I assume game
three as well if there is one. And then Cincinnati,

(47:47):
to your point, did enough in the attack. They created
more chances than Columbus and ultimately they found the one
goal and that was the difference in the game.

Speaker 1 (47:54):
What's the adjustment you expect from Columbus on Sunday.

Speaker 11 (47:58):
I think they'll be a little more dynamic going forward.
I think they're going to try to get their wing
backs involved a little bit more and just try to
go go quicker. I mean, they were not in sync
as they usually are, and they're a team that when
they're flying, it just looks it looks like it's like

(48:18):
heart almost right, It's like a symphony. It's like this
piece and this piece, and they know exactly where everybody's
gonna be, and they can find spaces that you're not
ready for, and they weren't that way.

Speaker 9 (48:28):
I think they'll be more ready. I'm interested to see.

Speaker 11 (48:31):
Who starts in the attack, Will Will Fernanzi go back
to Daniel Gozdok, who they spent a lot of money
to acquire from the Philadelphia Union in April and it
hasn't worked out to the extent that people would have expected.
But to me, that front three other than Diego ROSSI
didn't really threaten Cincinnati enough on Game one. Will he
really kind of rolled the dice and say, all right, look, god, Doc,

(48:52):
you're still a main man. We're paying a lot of
money to you, and we paid a lot of money
for you. Now's the time to shine and go back
to him start. I'm curious to see if that's the
move on Sunday.

Speaker 1 (49:03):
I don't know that you could have asked Chris Albright
to be more active during the transfer window than he
was late summer and did so with the stated goal
of we're trying to win that We're trying to win
the MLS Cup this year. These are the things I
need to do. They bring back, Brenner. Do you believe
that those series of moves positioned this team to at
least get to the final?

Speaker 11 (49:25):
I think well, man, I think they've done as well
as they could to your point, and getting to the
final in its own right is going to be a
massive task in the Eastern Conference because the.

Speaker 9 (49:35):
East is so good.

Speaker 11 (49:38):
But I think they have as good of a chance
as anybody, and not just Brenner. Samuel Geedy. They love
him and look he started over Obina Lobodo.

Speaker 12 (49:46):
Who.

Speaker 9 (49:48):
Got from an injury.

Speaker 11 (49:49):
But Wobodo started and played forty five minutes on decision day,
and Pat Newton said that Guide didn't because he was
coming back from international duty.

Speaker 9 (49:57):
He was with I think the full Baki in under
twenty one team, so he had a lot of travel.

Speaker 11 (50:01):
But now Wobado has you know, look he went forty
five minutes, he started, and he probably could have started
Game one, maybe not gone ninety minutes. But Pat Noon
went with Samuel Ghee and Overdo played what ten minutes
to the bench, So that shows you what they think
of Samuel Gee, how much trust they have in him,
whether you know. As the playoffs won, Cincinnati continues on

(50:23):
will it be GEDI, Will it be Wobodo in that
spot next to Buka? I don't know, but it's it's
another big move I think in the summer that maybe
went under the radar, overshadowed by Brenner. But a guy
who's really helping this team right now.

Speaker 1 (50:36):
Philly wins game one, New York City wins Game one,
Miami wins Game one, FC Cincinnati wins game one. Is
there a takeaway from the first series of games in
the East.

Speaker 11 (50:47):
Overall, so far in these playoffs, it's the dominance of
home teams. There's only been one away team that's won
a game, and that was the team you just mentioned,
New York City beating Charlotte, which to me that four
or five was the most kind of up in the
air of the series. But I think all of the
teams that lost Game one are also really good, and
it wouldn't surprise me if any of them win Game two.

(51:08):
Of course, that includes the Columbus crew, right who who
were a fantastic team. Chicago took Philly the penalties. Nashville
the team that I think of all the teams out East,
the team that didn't show up to the to the
biggest extent on Game one. They were not very good
against Miami and controlled that game. They've got a big
task ahead in Game two. And from a Cincinnati perspective,

(51:30):
you're watching that that's Saturday night, and you know that
if Miami wins that in game two.

Speaker 2 (51:35):
They're through the Semis.

Speaker 11 (51:37):
And now if you're Cincinnati and you win game two,
who's next for you?

Speaker 9 (51:42):
It's it's Lional Messi.

Speaker 11 (51:43):
It's into Miami coming to TQL Stadium in a conference
semi final.

Speaker 9 (51:47):
That would be box office. That would be an incredible game.

Speaker 11 (51:51):
But book both those teams that have to get through
their their their their Round one series that they're in
right now.

I'm petty. I just want to see Cincinnati to celebrate
on their field.

Speaker 11 (52:01):
Yeah, I blame you, of course, of course. Look and
it'd be a little bit of paybacks in twenty twenty three,
wouldn't it a little bit the Columbus crew celebrated winning
the East and advancing the MLS Caveatkuo Stadium in pretty
dramatic comeback fashion. I think it would be cathartic for
a lot of Cincinnati supporters. What I've learned from calling

(52:23):
a lot of these games is there is the something,
the something you know, yellow and black kind of hanging
over Cincinnati supporters right Like, Columbus have gotten the better
of Cincinnati in big games. And I think for Cincinnati,
if they can turn that around this year, that there'd
be some Catharsists there.

Speaker 1 (52:40):
Without question, you have a great call on Sunday. We

Yes, yes, we did. You wrote about Al Golden, so
I you know, amid all the different discussions about the
Bengals defense and how it might be fixed and what
they should do moving forward and who to blame, I
think the general consensus is, Look, they asked Al to
do a lot, but they didn't give him much to
work with, and so we'll sort of absolve him. In

writing about the game last week, which you were at,
you kind of point the finger at him a little bit.
And I want folks to read it, but walk me
through is specifically as it relates to Sunday, how Al
kind of got worked over by his counterpart on the
other team.

Yeah, and I don't think Al Golden would absolve himself.
Let me just say that person foremost, I think he
pointed the finger right squarely in the mirror. But yeah,
I mean, he's never called plays in the NFL before
as much as we take as experience or granted, you know,
he obviously did it in college, but pro and college
ball are not the same thing. He doesn't have the
talent advantage obviously that he had a Notre Dame. And

I think you're seeing it a lot now, especially when
I was in the press box watching on Sunday, you
see things a little bit differently than you do on TV.
And you know, you could just see a lot of
times where the Jets were doing things that they had
done earlier in the game, and we're setting up sort
of zigging off of those zags. The Bengals stopped them early,
you know, help them to I think it was just
eight yards rushing in the first quarter. By the fourth

quarter it was over one hundred yards just in.

You know, if you could see it coming, they were
getting out flanked, or they were throwing passes that we're
going to have guys having to pick their way through,

bunch formations and things like that. And you know, so
much of the chess game, if you will, between coordinators
is you know, kind of punch counter punch, zigging when

you are expecting a zag and you know, being non
rhythmic in a certain way. And you know, al Going's
a rookie at that too, unless we talk about the
rookies who are playing for the Bengals. On the field,
he's kind of learning on the job as he goes
to and he's gonna make mistakes, and then you know,
there's certain times where you know it's sort of almost
too late. He probably sees it coming too, if I
can see it coming and I'm not. You know, Amos

Alonso's stag up in the booth there and I can
see certain things happening, but I'm sure he does too,
And it's just a little lady. You know, he has
to go with what he's called already. But you know,
the Jets have a first year play caller two and
I just thought that their guy, Tanner Engstrand is his name,
Not that anybody would know who he is necessarily, but

he's a rookie offensive coordinator and he just seemed like
he was getting a step ahead, especially in the second
half of Golden And you know, it's it's just the
kind of thing he's gonna have to work through and
get more comfortable with this sort of cut and thrust
of the way players are called and what teams want
to do and want to make you think they're doing,
you know, And I just think he's a step behind

right now. And you know, like the rookies who are
playing on the field, that can only get better with
the reps. And I'm sure he will too.

idea is they make it a immediate impact that is
not happening with Shamar Stewart or Dimitrius Knight or Barrett Carter.
Should I start to lose hope when it comes to
these rookies or should should I give them time? Should

I give them time to make an impact?

Well, I mean, if you're going to take the rookie
class as a hole, the guards or the guys we
thought would be the problem, right, and they've actually both
played fairly well. Certainly on Sunday they played really well.
And they're getting thrown into the fire. I mean, you know,
you look around the league, and there's plenty of rookies
who are making more instant impacts than the guys we have.
Over in Baltimore, Teddy Buchanan, a fourth round the rookie

(01:00:38):
linebacker named Rookie of the Month for October. So he's
doing something right. I mean, you certainly don't give up hope.
Al Golden himself made the point, like, you know, if
you looked at the guys he worked with back in
the early twenties when they were on their Super Bowl
runs and Logan Wilson and Jermaine Pratt when they were youngsters,
young pups, they made plenty of mistakes too, and they
turned into key elements of these so you know, you

(01:01:01):
certainly don't write them off. And you know, for better
or worse. I mean, think about how many rookie classes
the Bengals have had where the guys never even saw
the field, you know, and whether that was because of
injury or because they were you know, behind veterans, or
just weren't any good. And then you get the year
three and you're like, well, now it's time to see
what we have in ex player.

Speaker 2 (01:01:20):
But then it's almost too late.

Speaker 10 (01:01:21):
Nobody's could be saying that about Barrett Cutter or Demetrius
Knight or even Jalen Rivers. You know, it's like, by
year three, we'll know one way or the other what
we have in them and whether it's you know, time
to move on or whether they're players you can build around.
So you know, in that sense, it's good that they're
getting a lot of rests, but not so good that
they haven't performed anywhere close to their capabilities as yet.

(01:01:43):
And you know it's not just because they can't play.
It's a variety of factors and it's almost compounding on
itself every week. They have to just pull out of
this kind of nose that that they're in and get
things stable up off before they can really start to
play well.

In your opinion, since that Super Bowl year, which is
feeling like it was decades ago, what is the single
biggest front office missteps since?

Speaker 10 (01:02:11):
Well, let me say this first. I mean, listen, I
know Duke Tobin is begetting a lot of bullets this week,
and I fired a few too, And you know, he's
the face, he's there to take that to take the heat.
So you know, no, I'm not making any.

Speaker 2 (01:02:24):
Excuses or anything for him.

Speaker 10 (01:02:25):
I don't have any sympathy, but you know, I think
we've also memory hold the idea that it was only
three weeks ago where he sort of saved the season
by getting Joe Fleckow. I mean, the team would be
completely off a cliff if if we didn't have the
offense going. I mean, you know, think about not just
how they were losing games, but we're totally unwatchable from
the quarterback position, and that's where all the money is

(01:02:45):
on the offensive side of the paul. So at least
they're on track thanks to Joe in that sense, And
give Toven credit for bringing them in here and getting
him for basically nothing. But to get back to your point,
I mean, there's been a lot of obviously issues over
the last several draft classes, super Bowl, but to me,
the biggest thing it's not just one misstep, it's the
failure as a whole to get another pass rusher in

(01:03:07):
here to go along with Trey Hendrickson. You know, I
think Sam Hubbard at six six and a half sacks
back in twenty two, that's still the most sacks any
player not wearing number ninety one his hat in the
last years, three years since the Super Bowl, and it's
not going to get any better this year either. So
you know, you can't as much as we just talked
about Al Golden and the rookies and everything else, you're

(01:03:29):
playing defense with one hand tied behind your back if
you can't get any pass rush at all, and they
just can't do it when Hendrickson's not the guy making
it happen single handedly and he just can't go forward,
it's just hard, almost impossible to sustain any kind of
you know, defensive momentum or win, you know, consistently in
this league without any kind of regular pass rush for

(01:03:50):
multiple angles. So it's been that you know, they've tried obviously,
they drafted Miles Murphy, they drafted Stewart, but they haven't
tried hard enough.

Speaker 14 (01:03:58):
And you know, it's.

Speaker 10 (01:04:00):
Almost like you got to go all out at this
point to get somebody in with Hendrickson's and penn departure
at some point, whether it's in a couple of weeks
I don't think so, but possible, or you know, next
year or even the year after. You got to get
somebody else in here to rush the pastor it's just
it's beyond a joke at this point.

the Biscuits was your classic champ That the runners that
I've got my eyes pointed towards is the International Raidar
representing Japan and Forever Young, a winner of the Saudi
Cup comes in for yrsheto your harkey. One of the
more colorful trainers in the game, and Forever Young just

has that ability to go on the road.

You know it can take it.

Internationally, was very close in this one last year. Has
had a couple of big tribes trying to best out
the North American runners. But I think this shakes up

know the classes there in bunches, and I think the
pace set up could be there as well. Likely we'll
go off as the favorite, as the second choice to
fierceness two.

if I want a long shot in the classics, specifically
point me in the right direction.

for the same bard of Chad Brown will be to
have this horse go full sem contrary thinking at fifty

to one as a long shot, to try and get
that pastecalon to really set it up for Sierra Leone
to come with one big final chance towards the finish line.
But sometimes if there's no pressure going towards that front
front runner the rabbit, if you will, they could go
on with this thing at a very big price. So
contrary thinking at fifty to one could be that price
play for Chad Brown. Now Seria Leon's going to be

(01:09:03):
right there in the thick of it comes with the
big almighty finish towards the line. I'll throw one more
running here for Todd Pletcher. A lot of people will
be talking about fierceness expected to be one of the
front runners from the inside, But mind frame, the barn
mate has the credentials in bunches, has that finish could
be quite versatile. Sitting at ten to one on the
morning line as the second choice for trainer Pledcher could

be sneaking under the radar. So contrary thinking massive long
shot could be a little loose up on that front end.
Mind frame at ten to one will be the number
eight for Todd Pletcher. That's the value play if you're
looking to go outside of that top selection in Forever Young.

two of the best in the UK. They've had a
lot of success coming across to the States prior. This

seven year old is looking for a third when at
the Breeders' Cup and we'll be running in the Breeders'
Cup Turf. So the Classic goes is race number nine
the Breeders' Cup Turf, the one before it. That's where
I'm looking at. Rebel's Romance will be the one horse
from the inside sitting at five to two A classy
look in time. Has had seven starts for this year
with five wins. Comes back out to the States where

we've had has prior a really good chance of becoming
a three time victor down there at the Seaside Oval
in the Breeders Cup.

Yeah, in the spirit of Halloween, let's look at some
players and some trends. Let's start with the tricks. Caleb Williams,
that's been a little tricky. Weeks one through three twenty
three point four Fantasy points. Weeks four to eight, twelve
point one, like halfs the production dead last and completion
percentage over expected per next Gen Stat's good news is
he plays the Bengals this week and that defense could

(01:14:52):
help them. But it's been tough getting him in your lineup.
It's been tough getting Tuber Hubbard in your lineup. And
since coming back from that calf injury, another one of
our tricks he just had given him the opportunity. He
has done a lot with them, oh eighty nine yards
seventy three snaps. Meanwhile, Rico Daddle, the guy who's been
tearing up to I got one hundred and fifty yards
on just fifty four snaps. They both have about the
same carries. I expect Daddle to get the bulk in

the workload.

Moving forward, let's come to some.

Good news some trees Stefan Jags. He's Everson twenty nine

Yeah, well, actually I'm sifting this up and I wanted
to start with the news tonight and maybe that great
news for Bengal fans, but fantasy manag who's sure excited
to see Lamar Jackson return under center from missing his
multiple weeks.

With the hams issue.

Speaker 14 (01:16:00):
He's a fool go tonight, absolutely getting inserted in the lineup.
This should also mean good things for the Ravens offense,
so I do like the yunder a little bit tonight
on the shore weak and trail one. Lamar is a
must start obviously for any fantasy team. Jade and Daniels
looking good for him to return Sunday night versus Seattle
as well with his own hamstring issue, so no reservations there.
And Kyler Murray also trending in a positive direction. He's

(01:16:21):
had a foot injury. He plays on Monday Night Football though,
so you might want to had Jacobi that was set
there just as a backup plan. Both would be good
plays against that struggling Cowboys defense. And I'm sure as
you talked about Joe Placo all day with his shoulder
issue a limited participant today, clearly Chase Higgins brown they're
all better fantasy sads when Joe under center than Jake
Browning on the flip side of it at running back.

(01:16:44):
That's where you were talking about the buzzkill the week.
Last week one of my favorite rookies, Camp Scatam, who
out for the season with that gruesome ankle injury. Tyrone
Tracy and Devin Singletary to Shorey. Although Tracy was dropping
a lot of leagues, could be a nice little waiver.

proven to be one of the better defenses in Jordan Mason,
but Aaron Jones back for the Vikings in week eight
we saw him take over a large percentage of the
snap share, which led Mason having a slow lowest route

share and snaps in general since week one. So he's
a risky play and a tough match up there versus
Detroit and some sleepers. I love me Van Knight at
least probably one more week there of him getting the
primary action for the Cardinals. I actually scooped him up

coming up at five to ten this afternoon. As talking
with Brenda last hour about the the UC, you know,
he did an interview in Salt Lake City. I guess
where the Bearcats were positioned as a team that really

hasn't played anybody, and like, I think there's a degree
of intrigue about this team because it's a better team
than last season. It is a team that certainly looks
better coached than last season. They've gotten this deep into
the Big Twelve schedule without losing a football game. There's

a lot you can have your hat on with this team.
The special teams is a weapon. They don't turn it over.
The offensive line has been fantastic. They've given up two sacks.
They have a balanced offense. But you know, it's not
like they've run through this just gauntlet of ranked teams,

really good teams. They've beaten Iowa State, team that has
spent some time in the top fifteen this year. Winning
at Kansas was not easy. I don't think the Jayhawks
are great, though. They've taken care of business against Oklahoma
State and Baylor, and those are teams, especially Baylor at home,
that you should beat decisively. This is can they go

(01:21:40):
on the road as a big underdog and beat a
pretty good Utah team, Utah team that's lost to its
best two opponents. I understand that, like all right, they've
gotten to this point of the season. Over the course
of the next month, they're gonna play games against Utah
and BYU here and TCU on the road. For what
that's worth, I get it. I get the skepticism or uncertainty,

if you want to put it that way. But this
is a massive opportunity. If you win this game on Saturday,
it kicks in a hyper drive discussions about playing in
the Big Twelve Championship game, winning a Big Twelve championship
and playing in the College Football Playoff and while making
the playoff has never been easier, can you imagine think
about that for a second. Can you imagine you see

playing in the college football playoff and it might not
seem likely right now? And I get it, man, this
this game on Saturday is really hard. They're underdogs for
a reason. I think the line's a little inflated. But
can you just imagine if they win this game and
we spend the month of November sizing up their college
football playoff chances like that that's not something that was

as the kids say on Anybody's Bingo card back before
the season started, and yet possible and that's you know
for it. I think there are a lot of folks
who came into the season almost assuming that we would
spend the year talking about Scott's Sadderfield being bought out,

And now you know, the conversation is going to become
about an extension and maybe them making the playoff possible,
maybe not likely again, man, Like, I'm really worried about
Utah running the football, and I'm really worried about Utah
running the football if the Bearcats, for the first time
since Nebraska, end up playing from behind. But we'll see,

they've at least put themselves in a position to go
into the first day of November playing in a big game.
I would say, the biggest game of Scott Sadderfield's regime.

and I'll I know what we're going to do if
they win this football game. Hey back to four and five,
you know, kind of where they were after the Pittsburgh game.
But now they gotta buy and they play the Steelers,
who don't look like world beaters right now, and they
beat them once and you know, getting closer to I
know what we're going to talk ourselves into it. I

cannot do it until the defense shows something like It's
one thing if you get worked by the Detroit Lions,
great offensive football team, very good quarterback. It's a different
thing entirely if you get worked by the Green Bay

Packers and then there's getting worked by Aaron Rodgers and
the Steelers, and then there's getting worked by Justin Fields
and the Jets. So win this football game, But I'll
be honest with you, man, if it's another Hey, they
hung on by the skin of their teeth and they
win thirty eight thirty five, but they still couldn't stop anybody. Well,

then I don't think any progress was made. Like, if
they're going to make the playoffs, regardless of when Burrow
comes back, it's it's gonna happen because the defense got better.
And let's be honest, they're not a whole lot of
other things Al Golden can do. There are just players
who have to perform at a higher level than they

have and it looks like that might have to start
without Trey Hendrickson, who again didn't practice for a second
consecutive day. It's not so much about the division math.
It's not so much about where they are in relation
to Pittsburgh or Baltimore or the seventh seed in the AFC,
or even when Burrow comes back. We are saying the

same things about this defense on the last second to
last day of October that we were saying back in June.
Can't stop anybody, can't stop anybody when it matters. That
has been a recurring theme since after week one. When
it stops becoming one, then we'll talk about the playoffs.
We're not going to be talking about them at all

if they lose, and chances are if they lose, it's
going to be because they get worked offensively by Caleb Williams,
even though there's a ton of uncertainty as to who
he's going to be throwing the football to. Let's talk
about Joe Flacco and Trey Hendrickson. We do this every

All right, So Joe Flacco is dealing with a sprained
ac joint. What is an ac joint?

Speaker 13 (01:28:27):
Sure? The ac joint is that main knuckle that on
the front of your shoulder where the shoulder blade meets.

Speaker 2 (01:28:34):
Up against the collar bone.

Speaker 13 (01:28:36):
You can cot and feel it on most people when
you land on your shoulder typically is when you sprain it.

Speaker 2 (01:28:42):
And yeah, it can be pretty painful.

Speaker 1 (01:28:45):
So what's done to determine the extent of the injury?
Are there different grades that sort of thing?

Speaker 13 (01:28:51):
Yeah, they sure are. Yeah, hopefully it's just a grade
one sprain. That's where there's no separation between the two
bone pieces on the knuckle. If the grades go higher,
they go all the way up to six. That just
is an increasing amount of movement of the bones away
from each other, which obviously as the grades get higher,
the injuries get more severe and take longer to heal

(01:29:13):
and sometimes even necessitate surgical repair.

Speaker 1 (01:29:16):
All right, So the recovery process, the timeline could be
all over the place. What is the typical recovery timeline
if there is one for an injury like this?

Speaker 13 (01:29:25):
You know, if it's you or I and we sprain
it and we rest it for a couple of weeks,
and it's a low grade injury, we might recover in
a week or two. But when you're talking an NFL
caliber athlete, the mount force that's going across that shoulder when,
for example, they're tackled, it could be tremendous, So it
could take a little bit longer. But of course, these

(01:29:45):
guys are so tough they sometimes play through injuries like this,
not uncommonly, so we'll have to see.

Speaker 1 (01:29:51):
And when you do that, you obviously run the risk
often of making the injury worse. How much of that
is in play here.

Speaker 13 (01:29:58):
Yeah, I mean that's a big concern. I think that's
why the trainers are gonna That's why they say it's
kind of a touch and go situation.

Speaker 2 (01:30:04):
It might be even up towards the game time.

Speaker 13 (01:30:06):
They kind of see, after he's warmed up and he's
able to move around, how it feels and how stable
the shoulder is, and it feels like he can go,
he may go.

Speaker 1 (01:30:13):
All right, let's talk about Trey Hendrickson, who is being
sidelined with a hip injury. Didn't practice. This was originally
reported as a back issue, now it's a hip problem.
Didn't play against Pittsburgh, played against the Jets, reaggravated the
injury in the second quarter, then didn't come back and
play the rest of the game. He's also considered day

(01:30:33):
to day. Does the fact that he was able to
play through the pain for a while against New York
give us some idea of what the specific injury might be.

Speaker 13 (01:30:43):
Yeah, it's probably more in the order of the sprain.
I would think, you know, if there was a tearing
or more significant injury, probably unlikely.

Speaker 2 (01:30:51):
He'd be able to get back.

Speaker 13 (01:30:53):
But nonetheless, just like with the shoulder situation, sprains can
vary in there of severity. So a more severe injury
obviously than wouldn't assess it a little more time off.
So hopefully he's going to be able to rehab this
and get back.

Speaker 1 (01:31:11):
You hear all the time about like hipplex or strains
and hit pointers, and then there's you know, injuries that
are more severe. Walk me through the process of making
the distinction.

Speaker 13 (01:31:21):
Yeah, more severe injury would cause them some mechanical symptoms,
maybe some more clicking or locking catching, and probably have
to get an MRI to diagnose that see such as
a label care or something more significant, even the stress structure.
Hopefully it's more just you know, soft tissue injury that
you know, he took the joint too far through arrange

(01:31:43):
your motion and injured it.

Speaker 2 (01:31:46):
But hopefully we'll come back sooner.

Speaker 1 (01:31:48):
What do you do with somebody during the week between
games if they're trying to play through something like this.

Speaker 13 (01:31:54):
Yeah, you know, the trainers are going to be able
to assess their strengths, their balance, their ability to move
both you know in a sprint and lateral and c
if they're safe to get.

Speaker 2 (01:32:06):
It back out there in the field.

Speaker 13 (01:32:07):
You know, you obviously don't want to see him.

Speaker 2 (01:32:09):
One thing you don't want to see.

Speaker 13 (01:32:10):
Him, you know, guarding the joint because then something else
could get injured or they could injure that further.

Speaker 1 (01:32:16):
Yeah, it makes total sense. Doctor Matthew Grugermeier from Ortho Sincy.

each other. We did not come up with any answers.
I think we're gonna keep doing what we're doing.

Okay, Typically those meetings do yield positive results, so I'm
I am interested to see if some better work from
one of you emerges. I wouldn't count on it. That's
a very fair assessment. Do we do we feel? Do
we feel like Joe flackom now may play on Sunday?

Yeah?

It sounds encouraging the fact that he was able to
throw today.

Speaker 2 (01:34:46):
I mean, he was.

Speaker 17 (01:34:48):
Limited the way they listed him, but that makes sense
because the plan was going to be to have him
and Jake Browning split reps. So if he doesn't take
his cool amount of reps. Then he gets listed as limited.
But as long as there's not a set, it looks
like the path is there for him to ramp up
and be the starter on Sunday.

Speaker 1 (01:35:05):
So what's Al Gold supposed to do with this defense,
especially if Trey Hendrickson doesn't go.

Speaker 17 (01:35:11):
Yeah, it's a great question. I mean, it's it's almost
to the point where they have to start blitzing more.
They're the only way they're going to get pressure. They
they just keep waiting and expressing the hope and belief
that it's going to turn on for Schamar and from
Miles Murphy and Joseph O'SAI, and it just hasn't been there.

Speaker 2 (01:35:29):
And you know, I guess Schamar has a little bit.

Speaker 17 (01:35:32):
More understanding there because he got started so late and
then he just gets rolling and he has four weeks
off and so he is really far behind on time
on task. But they they've got to find some way
to get pressure. And he just guys that aren't winning
one on ones don't all of a sudden just start
winning one on ones. And so I think he's going
to have to get creative and start bringing some more blitzes.

(01:35:53):
And we did see that a little bit last week.
You know, the only quarterback they hit was Cam Taylor
brig coming on a corner blitz.

Speaker 2 (01:35:59):
And he he got to justin field.

Speaker 15 (01:36:01):
So I could see them doing a little more of that,
But then.

Speaker 17 (01:36:04):
You also worry about doing that against a running quarterback
in Caleb Williams.

Speaker 2 (01:36:07):
He could really burn you.

Speaker 1 (01:36:09):
Zach Taylor talked after the Jets game about the need
for defensive leaders to emerge. Who are those guys supposed
to be?

Speaker 17 (01:36:18):
Well, I mean your captains obviously, but it's they're just
such a weird spot. You know, you benched one in
Logan Wilson. Trey Hendrickson just doesn't I don't know what
he's like when the media is not in there, but
when the media and there, he just doesn't seem like
he's in the locker room interacting with players. He's hurt himself.
He may not even play again this week. He hasn't
practiced yet this week. And bj Hill is just you know,

(01:36:40):
he's he's he's got leadership qualities, but he's not that
that alpha leader that they're just desperately crating on this
side of the ball. And I think you know, a
guy like Barrett Carter could be that guy, and I
think that's part of the equation of why they they
turned to him over Logan Wilson is not just the
spark in play, but the sparking leadership. And still that's

(01:37:00):
a lot to ask a rookie in this spot. So
that's that's my question, and none of the players want
to talk about it. But when they had that player's
only meeting, who was in the front of the room,
because I don't know who it would have been. And
I think it's a really interesting question, and maybe somewhere
down the line someone will be willing to say it,
But that's it. They are desperately seeking that on that
side of the ball.

Speaker 1 (01:37:20):
I think I know who wasn't standing in front of
the room. Who's that Mike Panell?

Speaker 17 (01:37:28):
Uh Yeah, yeah, he got out of here as fast
as possible. See, he ain't seen enough. And you know,
and that's what sparked our Riders only meeting today because
none of us thought to ask Zach about what Mike
Panello yesterday at the press conference. There was so many
other issues that flipped everybody's mind. But it's just curious
Duke always has that line about it's not his job
to make other teams better. Well, he just did that

(01:37:48):
by releasing Mike Panell to go to the Chiefs, the
team that could potentially stand in this team's way if
they get things turned around and find a way of
the playoffs.

Speaker 1 (01:37:56):
Who stood in front of the room during the writers meeting.

Speaker 15 (01:38:01):
Well, that will keep that between us. We'll keep that.

Speaker 1 (01:38:03):
I understand that. That's very good. Is this team's you know,
they've run the ball really effectively and it's it's sort
of gone. I don't want to say unnoticed, but the
way they lost last week, nobody wanted to talk about positives.
Are Are the Bengals now actually good at running the football?

Speaker 12 (01:38:21):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (01:38:21):
I would say they are.

Speaker 17 (01:38:23):
It's I think it's notable that just the way that
they are moving people off the ball and there's holes.

Speaker 15 (01:38:30):
And then getting samage into the mix. And I think
that was part of the plan all along.

Speaker 17 (01:38:35):
But they just were so staggered on offense and they
just struggled to get first downs and get drives put together.
And and now that Flaco's in there and they're moving
the ball at a normal pace, they they're able to
do that. They're able to run more plays and I
think it's just all kind of building on itself. I
don't I don't think it's fools gold at all. I
really do think this has been two legitimate games of

(01:38:56):
a really good rushing attack, and I would expect to
see that continue.

I think they found a little something there.

Again, it probably goes to Joe Black would being more
willing to go under center and do the play action
stuff and the stuff that Joe Burrow doesn't like to do.
