camp is underway. He is down there at the stadium
right now. He's got the Growler podcast, where he and
Charlie Goldsmith have given Eric Hall a nickname that I
hope sticks. He also writes for The Athletic, a publication

that gave the Reds a D for what they did
at the trade deadline. So there's lots going on. Paul
is joining us from the interview room at pay Corps.
How you doing, sir, I'm doing great.

How are you doing?
Speaker 3 (01:23):
Mo? Wonderful? Wonderful. I miss you being in studio. But
nonetheless a lot going on. You know, you guys talked,
you recapped training camp through Saturday. The day they put
the pads on was Monday, and the theme had been
boy pass rush is king? Look at what the defense
is doing up front? The last two days have not
(01:44):
done anything to throw cold water on that.
Speaker 1 (01:47):
No.
Speaker 2 (01:47):
I mean, I think the rebuilt defense and everything that
we knew that they wanted to be this year has
been sort of established. It's been the story or you
have came up the same way it was the story
of offseason, and I think that you know, guys around
the locker room and the team have been felt like, yeah,

this is this is different, this feels different.
Speaker 1 (02:11):
These it's not just that they're bigger.
Speaker 2 (02:14):
They they're off the bus defense right where it's like
it just looks bigger, it looks different. It's it's the
savvy that they play with the understanding of what they
need to do, how to take advantage of what the
Bengals are doing.
Speaker 1 (02:30):
And to me, what stood out on top of that
was just.
Speaker 2 (02:36):
How many different players are making plays and we're you're
sort of seeing that depth on the defensive line and
and throughout the secondary taking advantage of those sort of muddled.
Speaker 1 (02:48):
Pockets and things like that.
Speaker 2 (02:49):
Just just so many players seem to be playing confidently,
seemed to be making plays, and where you're you're writing
down seven eight nine names that had a splash player too,
and as the good defenses look like everybody can make
a play, everybody plays a confidence, everybody plays fast, and
I think that has clearly started with what they've been
(03:11):
able to do upfront.
Speaker 3 (03:13):
And I see that as well with Demetrius Knight, right.
I mean, you guys were talking, you and Charlie were
talking about the interception he had of Joe Burrow, and
you know, obviously all eyes on the linebackers and what
stands out for a lot of us is how the
Bengals defense is winning up front. But like, I don't know, man,
I see guys reacting. I see guys who look like
(03:34):
they are benefiting from the year of experience they got
last year. I think Knight just stands out to most,
to me, at least a little bit more than Barrett Carter.
But if you went into camp thinking like, all right,
those guys have to win me over, maybe they're not
there yet, but I think they've taken steps.
Speaker 1 (03:51):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (03:52):
I think this has been a super encouraging first six
days now for those two guys. They haven't looked picked on,
haven't looked out of place. You've seen them making anticipatory plays.
I mean, I'll go to a play that Barrett Carter
made in the end zone the other day where he
ends up tipping a pass that would have been a

touchdown for t Higgins. I mean he was standing there
having to read Joe Burrow's eyes and understand where the
play is likely to go, and he's able to get
a hand on it. I mean it was absolutely gonna
be a Higgins touchdown, but understanding what he was looking
at seeing the play, you know, I was talking to
about it today A little bit about how much that's
(04:34):
sort of the ultimate year one verse year or two
thing where he had a feel for where that play
could be going, and no, I need to be trying
to look at the player's eyes and things like that.
I think when you have that, you see you see
that stuff, and you see that stuff happening for both
of those guys on a really on a regular basis,
and that's super encouraging. Doesn't mean it's gonna be great
(04:57):
when the season starts, for sure, but it it's starting
from a really nice foundation.
Speaker 3 (05:02):
So at what point during camp does the pendulum swing
where it's like, hey, man, the defense right now, it's like, boy,
the defense looks like it knows what it's doing. Right.
There's a lot of good stuff there. When does it
swing to boy, it would be nice if the offensive
line could have one day where it felt like they
won the practice they won eleven on Eleven's where they
kept ex Lawrence and company from wreaking havoc.
Speaker 2 (05:24):
Camp really starts when the call it periods start when
they just start pulling from the whole offense. Right now,
As anybody that's been down there knows, the Bengals offense
looks different, very different than it has in recent years.
They are running, they are working on corners.
Speaker 1 (05:42):
Of their playbook.
Speaker 2 (05:45):
That are have been inconsistent or underused or both in
recent years. And a lot of it is under center.
There's motions everywhere, there's different wrinkles that you don't normally see.
They're working on that stuff for a reason. They're trying
to become a more well rounded offense that can beat
(06:07):
teams in different ways. We have certainly spent a lot
of time talking about the under center topic, but it's.
Speaker 1 (06:11):
More than just that. But that's what they're using the.
Speaker 2 (06:14):
Continuity to their advantage right now to work on that
stuff and it has not always looked good. Dan Pitcher
told me today, we're trying to win an AFC North championship,
not a training camp championship. Okay, they're working on becoming
a better team as a whole offensively, and that means
they're working through stuff right now and they're running things
(06:38):
at the defense that they would.
Speaker 1 (06:39):
Never run at this defense. They're not hitting buttons.
Speaker 2 (06:42):
Their offense has against this defense on purpose because they're
trying to work on.
Speaker 1 (06:48):
Certain things now. When they get into the part of camp.
Speaker 2 (06:51):
Where it's like Okay, drive the field with everything at
your disposal.
Speaker 1 (06:56):
Let's talk about what it looks like that. Let's talk
about what it looks.
Speaker 2 (07:00):
Like and if they're moving the ball, if there's inconsistency
or some of the problems we've seen are still happening.
Speaker 1 (07:05):
If that's the case and we're reaching.
Speaker 2 (07:08):
Mid to late August, we can start talking about what's
happening and are they as everything? Okay, But for now,
I think what you're seeing is an offense taking advantage
of I'm not gonna call it time.

To kill, but like they can do this because if.
Speaker 2 (07:25):
They've got they've got five weeks until the opener, you
give them like three days of working on their bread
and butter core stuff, and they're probably good.
Speaker 1 (07:34):
They're gonna take more time than that.
Speaker 2 (07:36):
But like, I just think right now, that's a lot
of grain as salt that's involved in all of this,
because everybody's kind of working on something. When it starts
getting real, they start doing the call it periods. I
think we start doing more of a real evaluation.

six practices that has surprised.

You, you know, along those offensive lines. I mean, I
just think the sheer amount of motions and tricky stuff
and eye candy and window dressing. And there was a
play where Joe Burrow was lined up with Chase Brown
(08:21):
next to him and then Jamar chased next to him,
and I was like, can they just.
Speaker 1 (08:25):
Keep going down the line? How many guys are there?
Speaker 3 (08:27):
Gonna be right?
Speaker 2 (08:28):
And it's like that seems to be happening with regularity
in your honor. I think they ran a fun shovel
pass the other day to bring back that. I know
you had to love that, Yeah, I mean, I just
think there's a lot of that. I think Al Golden
called it Star Wars before the Snap just a little
bit ago, Like there's just more. There's just a lot
(08:50):
more of that, I think than I maybe anticipated seeing.
And so that's been fun though, Like that's something that
they needed is to be less static for the snap.
So I've enjoyed watching it, but it has been a
little surprising how much of that there's been.
Speaker 3 (09:06):
I don't know if I saw it during eleven on eleven,
but I saw it when they were working on air
near the goal line the formation where Jamar's next to Chase,
next to Joe, and I just thought, like, give me
that once. I just because I just I want to
see what the defensive answer is to that. I just
want to see what the other how the other team
defended Maybe well maybe you know, maybe they stop them,
(09:29):
but like I'm watching that going like what is the
what is the answer schematically to that? And that is
an example of some of the things I want to
see the Bengals do because if they deploy the chess
pieces correctly, good God, that the amount of things you'll
have to think about as a defensive coordinator on Monday
game planning for them is infinite.
Speaker 2 (09:49):
Yeah, And I think that's what that's why they're tapping
in all this. They want a defensive coordinator on Monday
to be like, are we going to get their under
center game? Are we going to get their shotgun game?
Or were going to get all these wrinkles? Are they
going to be? You know, one thing that they're doing
a lot more of now too as part of this
is Okay, we've seen the way they utilize Jamar Chase,
moving him all over now for a couple of years.
(10:12):
Now they're treating Chase Brown the same way. They're moving
him around a lot more. You see him out in
the slot and they're running jet sweeps with him. You
see him with where it's like where what is he
going to be? Is he going to be a receiver?
Is he going to be a running back? Is he
gonna motion in? They've been running twenty personnel with two
running backs out there, where you have samaj in the
backfield and then you have Chase Brown in the slot,
(10:34):
and it's like, how's he going to be treated? And
Chase Brown I was talking to him about it, and
he's like, that's beautiful. You can see them trying to
communicate and and the linebacker being told, no, you have him,
and he's like, yes, please put a linebacker on me
and watch me do this, because like his receiving skills
are now at a point where that's a big mismatch
for the defense.
Speaker 1 (10:53):
And so I just.
Speaker 2 (10:55):
Think if the defense doesn't know where Jamar or Chase
Brown are gonna go and.
Speaker 1 (11:02):
How they're going to treat them, you just have such.
Speaker 2 (11:04):
A great opportunity to create hesitation, to create mismatches and
just get easy buttons all across the formation.
Speaker 3 (11:14):
Two more because I know you have to go and
do you know work number one, the shovel pass. I
will allow for it if the guy getting the ball
is the job breaker. Eric.

Yeah, you like the job breaker, your pro job breaker.

and I was so excited.

gonna sit here and take credit for that one. But
we were discussing sort of how the offense has been
this like candy store, and we were and it occurred
to him that, well, if this is a candy store,
it's clear which candy eric Ally is. And I was
I say this, I love it's I asked him, have

they named that motion after you, Eric where he comes
across the line and just hammers the edge, because that's
the eric All formation, That's the eric All motion.

Our our weekly check in of how the the Moegro
Award competition is going, because it feels like it's been
pretty competitive.

Now, you took Kobe Young out of it when we
discussed who was allowed in this year, you said Koby
Young because he was too high of fourth round pick.
He's had two great days in a now, otherwise he
would have been a hard charger.

But who did we say when we first started would
be the leader in the clubhouse before we started this thing,
Dante Myers, And he has been that, the I mean
underrated storyline of camp has been Dante Myers at this point.

I mean, he's been really good.

He shows up every day, he makes a player or
two and some that have been really impressive.

He's in the mix at this return position.

And I mean I feel like I'm talking more about
him than I am about Keishawn Williams or Charlie Jones.
If he can return kicks a little bit, if he
has the preseason game, I mean, he's making this team.
He's not gonna win the Moegger Award, only he's making
this team. He has really impressed a lot of people

in this building. His story is crazy Presbyterian on an
academic scholarship Delta State CFL. He's twenty six and he's like,
I'm going for it. He ends been the CFL crushing it.
They bring him here and he's opening He's been opening
eyes since OTA's and so I think Moeger Award leader

right now has to be Dante Myers.

Can I tell you who my favorite fan has been
during the five training camp practices we have broadcast from.

I love to know.

I love to watch the players when practice ends come
over and interact with fans. And so I'm watching today
as we're wrapping up our show and I'm packing up
my stuff, and there was a woman that every time
somebody would sign an autograph for her son and they
were signing for her son or I might have been
her grandson, she just said to him, hope you're ready
to work. And I think the players appreciate that, hope

you're ready to And I'm thinking, lady, that the practice
is over. You should be here in the morning, you know,
when it gets started. But every single one of them,
like every player to them, man, there must have been
like none of them who signed this kid's like helmet
felt thingy. You better be ready to work. So that's
my favorite fan so far.

You need to establish it and I love hope you're
ready to work comes not as they are walking across
the street to go out. It's after they've just put
in two hours in the heat and are sweating profusely,
just like trying not to get sweat on their grandson.

Has there been anything that is unfolded within the first
six practices that has surprised.
Speaker 2 (07:59):
You, you know, along those offensive lines. I mean, I
just think the sheer amount of motions and tricky stuff
and eye candy and window dressing. And there was a
play where Joe Burrow was lined up with Chase Brown
(08:21):
next to him and then Jamar chased next to him,
and I was like, can they just.
Speaker 1 (08:25):
Keep going down the line? How many guys are there?
Speaker 3 (08:27):
Gonna be right?
Speaker 2 (08:28):
And it's like that seems to be happening with regularity
in your honor. I think they ran a fun shovel
pass the other day to bring back that. I know
you had to love that, Yeah, I mean, I just
think there's a lot of that. I think Al Golden
called it Star Wars before the Snap just a little
bit ago, Like there's just more. There's just a lot
(08:50):
more of that, I think than I maybe anticipated seeing.
And so that's been fun though, Like that's something that
they needed is to be less static for the snap.
So I've enjoyed watching it, but it has been a
little surprising how much of that there's been.
Speaker 3 (09:06):
I don't know if I saw it during eleven on eleven,
but I saw it when they were working on air
near the goal line the formation where Jamar's next to Chase,
next to Joe, and I just thought, like, give me
that once. I just because I just I want to
see what the defensive answer is to that. I just
want to see what the other how the other team
defended Maybe well maybe you know, maybe they stop them,
(09:29):
but like I'm watching that going like what is the
what is the answer schematically to that? And that is
an example of some of the things I want to
see the Bengals do because if they deploy the chess
pieces correctly, good God, that the amount of things you'll
have to think about as a defensive coordinator on Monday
game planning for them is infinite.
Speaker 2 (09:49):
Yeah, And I think that's what that's why they're tapping
in all this. They want a defensive coordinator on Monday
to be like, are we going to get their under
center game? Are we going to get their shotgun game?
Or were going to get all these wrinkles? Are they
going to be? You know, one thing that they're doing
a lot more of now too as part of this
is Okay, we've seen the way they utilize Jamar Chase,
moving him all over now for a couple of years.
(10:12):
Now they're treating Chase Brown the same way. They're moving
him around a lot more. You see him out in
the slot and they're running jet sweeps with him. You
see him with where it's like where what is he
going to be? Is he going to be a receiver?
Is he going to be a running back? Is he
gonna motion in? They've been running twenty personnel with two
running backs out there, where you have samaj in the
backfield and then you have Chase Brown in the slot,
(10:34):
and it's like, how's he going to be treated? And
Chase Brown I was talking to him about it, and
he's like, that's beautiful. You can see them trying to
communicate and and the linebacker being told, no, you have him,
and he's like, yes, please put a linebacker on me
and watch me do this, because like his receiving skills
are now at a point where that's a big mismatch
for the defense.
Speaker 1 (10:53):
And so I just.
Speaker 2 (10:55):
Think if the defense doesn't know where Jamar or Chase
Brown are gonna go and.
Speaker 1 (11:02):
How they're going to treat them, you just have such.
Speaker 2 (11:04):
A great opportunity to create hesitation, to create mismatches and
just get easy buttons all across the formation.
Speaker 3 (11:14):
Two more because I know you have to go and
do you know work number one, the shovel pass. I
will allow for it if the guy getting the ball
is the job breaker. Eric.

Yeah, you like the job breaker, your pro job breaker.

and I was so excited.

Charlie gets credit. Charlie gets credit for that. I'm not
gonna sit here and take credit for that one. But
we were discussing sort of how the offense has been
this like candy store, and we were and it occurred
to him that, well, if this is a candy store,
it's clear which candy eric Ally is. And I was
I say this, I love it's I asked him, have

they named that motion after you, Eric where he comes
across the line and just hammers the edge, because that's
the eric All formation, That's the eric All motion.
Speaker 1 (12:15):
I've seen this before, he used to.
Speaker 2 (12:17):
I mean, he was doing that on repeat in twenty
twenty four.
Speaker 1 (12:20):
He did it. I guess that was.
Speaker 2 (12:22):
Yesterday, just taking boy a mafe out of the edge
of a run being a smajp Ryan touchdown. I was like,
that's should be named it. They need to name that
after him.
Speaker 1 (12:32):
Just call it jawbreaker motion. And I think we're onto something.
Speaker 3 (12:38):
Our our weekly check in of how the the Moegro
Award competition is going, because it feels like it's been
pretty competitive.
Speaker 1 (12:46):
Very competitive.
Speaker 2 (12:48):
Now, you took Kobe Young out of it when we
discussed who was allowed in this year, you said Koby
Young because he was too high of fourth round pick.
He's had two great days in a now, otherwise he
would have been a hard charger.
Speaker 4 (13:03):
But who did we say when we first started would
be the leader in the clubhouse before we started this thing,
Dante Myers, And he has been that, the I mean
underrated storyline of camp has been Dante Myers at this point.
Speaker 1 (13:17):
I mean, he's been really good.
Speaker 2 (13:18):
He shows up every day, he makes a player or
two and some that have been really impressive.
Speaker 1 (13:26):
He's in the mix at this return position.
Speaker 2 (13:30):
And I mean I feel like I'm talking more about
him than I am about Keishawn Williams or Charlie Jones.
If he can return kicks a little bit, if he
has the preseason game, I mean, he's making this team.
He's not gonna win the Moegger Award, only he's making
this team. He has really impressed a lot of people
(13:53):
in this building. His story is crazy Presbyterian on an
academic scholarship Delta State CFL. He's twenty six and he's like,
I'm going for it. He ends been the CFL crushing it.
They bring him here and he's opening He's been opening
eyes since OTA's and so I think Moeger Award leader

right now has to be Dante Myers.
Speaker 3 (14:17):
Can I tell you who my favorite fan has been
during the five training camp practices we have broadcast from.
Speaker 1 (14:25):
I love to know.
Speaker 3 (14:27):
I love to watch the players when practice ends come
over and interact with fans. And so I'm watching today
as we're wrapping up our show and I'm packing up
my stuff, and there was a woman that every time
somebody would sign an autograph for her son and they
were signing for her son or I might have been
her grandson, she just said to him, hope you're ready
to work. And I think the players appreciate that, hope
(14:51):
you're ready to And I'm thinking, lady, that the practice
is over. You should be here in the morning, you know,
when it gets started. But every single one of them,
like every player to them, man, there must have been
like none of them who signed this kid's like helmet
felt thingy. You better be ready to work. So that's
my favorite fan so far.
Speaker 2 (15:11):
You need to establish it and I love hope you're
ready to work comes not as they are walking across
the street to go out. It's after they've just put
in two hours in the heat and are sweating profusely,
just like trying not to get sweat on their grandson.
Speaker 1 (15:27):
I hope you're ready to work. Yeah, I appreciate that.
Speaker 3 (15:30):
Do you feel like at the Athletic that you should
ask see Trent to help with some Bengals training camp
coverage because this time of year, the Reds don't do
anything and thus there's nothing really for him to cover.
Speaker 1 (15:41):
Sure, I'm sure. I'm sure he'd actually love a change
of pace. Right now, just wondering.
Speaker 2 (15:45):
For what's been happening over there are the Are your
lines already lit up? Are people just waiting for me
to shut up so people can call in and complain
about the Reds at the deadline?
Speaker 1 (15:58):
Maybe?
Speaker 3 (15:58):
I don't know, we'll find out momentarily. The thing is,
it's not like there's any real new ground to cover.
I mean, I thought like I could go and get
the show from twenty twenty three, just like cut it,
slide it in and take a few segments off like
the Reds do the trade deadline because the themes are
the same. So but but I won't do that. I
won't be lazy.

I mean, this would have been a great day for
him to be here. We had Sal Stewart and the Reds.
A bunch of Reds players were down here today. South
Huge Jamar Fan showed up in his jersey. They did
a jersey exchange. Jamar seem pretty pumped about having the
Sal Stewart jersey, which you know, hold onto that one
after he wins Rookie of the.
