a couple of exhibitions. Earlier today they knocked off Victoria
by a score of one ten to sixty three.

there to tell us how the Bearcats did in Jared
Calhoun's debut, so to speak. Awesome to have you, as always.

but you're not on the beach. I'm a little bit disappointed.

Not on the beach. I'm trying to get back to

But there's a thunderstorm that's rolling in, so everybody's coming
from the beach back.

I couldn't get back up to my room, so I'm
just kind of standing in like a gazebo area right now,
trying to find some quiet to do this interview.

All right, well, you're looking good. What stood out more
than anything else when watching the Bearcats performance today?
Speaker 3 (01:24):
I know we talk a lot about Jerry Calhoun and offense.
I thought the defense was excellent for the large majority
of the day afternoon today. That's a team that scored
eighty eight points on Texas A and M yesterday and
I mean they have what eighteen and a half time. There
was a ton of ball pressure. Cincinnati jumped the passing
(01:45):
lanes over and over. They made life really tough for
a team that likes to pass the ball for open threes.
It's one of the concerns I've had with this defense.
Speaker 2 (01:57):
How well are they going to defend the ball to fend.
Speaker 3 (02:00):
The pass and keep teams from getting open looks from three?
They played excellent scouting report defense in game one like that.
That's a really good sign for me. Is you know
somebody that's that watches this as much as I do?
Speaker 1 (02:15):
Uh MJ Collins led the way with fifteen obviously a dude.
We've talked about a lot just over the last couple
of weeks. How good is he.
Speaker 3 (02:27):
He's got an ability to score from all three levels.
You know, he didn't have the three ball going today,
but he does something Mo that we just haven't seen
in far too long.
Speaker 1 (02:37):
Here.
Speaker 3 (02:38):
He can get to the free throw line and get
you five, six, seven points from the free throw line.
And when you do that, that means you go from
a guy that's gonna score nine ten points a game
to a guy that's gonna score fifteen to seventeen points
a game. And you can see it in the way
he attacks. He's got that ability to pull up and
knock down a jumper. He's got and shoot from the

mid range, and defenses have to be leery of that
so they can't just sag off of him and keep
him from getting to the rim. He uses his body
really well, He creates contact, he gets to the free
throw line, He converts from the free throw line. Although
Mo twenty nine percent from three sixty three percent from
the free throw line, boy, it kind of felt like
Merkat basketball.

Baby, Oh it doesn't matter, like I mean, you know,
the coach has changed, the players changed. This is how
it works, right is this is the one thing you
can count on no matter what. And but you know what,
if all the other stuff is better, maybe I could
live with it.

I don't know if they're scoring one hundred and ten
points a game, I don't care if they shoot sixty
three percent from the free throw line.
Speaker 2 (03:43):
I'd like to see the three point go up.

You know, they had some good shooters today, missed some
open looks, so I'm not really concerned about that. I
you know, the offense looked crisp. It was hard to tell.
You know, they didn't run a lot of offense. They
were so oh good at getting out in transition and
staying ahead of Victoria's defense that we didn't really see

What they're going to look like in the half court.

But that's okay. It's an exhibition game in August. I
don't need to see a fully developed half court offense.

What has Jared said about what he wants to accomplish
with his team in these games?

A lot of it is just getting these guys out
there together and seeing what works and what doesn't, seeing
how they respond to a little bit of adversity, getting
some things on tape that you can correct, and really
just getting a new group, you know, thirteen new guys.
I've joked on the broadcast today, mo, I really wish

Grant Derbyshire would have scored a point last year, like
one point, because as it stands, Cincinnati returned zero points
of production from the team the previous year.

I think it would have.
Speaker 3 (04:56):
Been awesome, like Cincinnati returned a point from the previous season,
but you know, they weren't able to make that happen.
But yeah, a lot of it is just getting everybody
on the same page, getting everybody to see what it
looks like with a different opponent out there, somebody that
doesn't know what you're trying to do every day.

And Victoria and.
Speaker 3 (05:19):
They went I think twenty four and four last year
and they're one of the better teams in Canada. Calgary tomorrow,
I think, boy, I watched them a little bit today
play Arkansas. I think tomorrow is probably gonna be a
lot worse than today.

Oh, okay, how is they're not good?

How is how is Jared Calhoun coaching these games? Is
is he giving extended minutes to guys who once we
get to let's say, December, aren't going to be seeing
nearly as much court time. Have any of those decisions
been made, Like, how's he handling thirteen guys, thirteen new guys?
Is he playing everybody? So?

I mean today it was he's stuck with the main rotation,
or almost the entire first half, and then probably the
first ten to twelve minutes of the second half. And
then we saw a little bit more to Shawn Bayden.
We saw, you know, Grant Darbyshire come in as kind
of the you know, he's in that walk on spot.
But for the most part this was I want to

you know, I want my first team out there, then
i want my second team out there, and then I'm
gonna mix and match and see how guys do when
we change it up a little bit and put some
first team guys with some second team guys and so
on and so forth.

I thought it was a good mix today.

I didn't feel like he oversubbed per se, but he
did like that first sub each half was like a
line change, and then from there it was mix and match.

Riley is back and ready to go, how do you
get those other couple because you know Eric mmhafee might
be in that group. Eric mahafee also might have been
one of the most impressive players that we saw today

nothing against Shamar Stewart because his injury is not insignificant
by any stretch. But that was a Day one injury.
Since then, we haven't had any major injury news. I'm
not sure We've had a ton of minor injury news,
and frankly, that is maybe the most important storyline that
is unfolded, at least so far. I have a lot

of thoughts on the Reds what they did at the
trade deadline. This was a very redzy trade deadline. We'll
