Six thirty three, fifty five carcDE Talk station. I'm very happy Friday
Eve to you. Welcome to thefifty five Carestery Morning show. Move Beyond
Surviving dot Org is the name ofthe charity. My guest today doctor Kelly
McLain. She's a surgical oncologist, has been treating women with breast cancer for
a very long time and sadly onein eight women develop breast cancer in their
lifetime. And I'm always enthusiasm andwelcome to the show, doctor McLain.

(00:26):
It's a pleasure to have you on. There have been wonderful advancements in the
treatment of breast cancer that it's nolonger just basically a death sentence when you
find out about it. We've gotsome really positive things happen in the world
of breast cancer treatment, don't weYeah, definitely. It's amazing the advances
that we've made, even in thepast five years, with diseases that people

(00:50):
would have died from before, andso now women who have been diagnosed are
living long lives, either cured ordisease free, or with disease, turning
it more into a chronic issue.Well, I'll tell you what. Since
I went along in the last segment. I'm short on this one. I'm

(01:11):
gonna just sort of tease what we'llbe talking about. I'll put you on
pause and bringing back because the pointof your organization moved beyond surviving the name
suggested a little bit. It's morethan just beating cancer, which is within
the realm of possibility given modern medicine. However, it ain't over if you've
survived the cancer. There's more beyondthat, and that's what your organization is

(01:33):
about. We're gonna learn about thatwhen we come back with again, doctor
Kelly McClain. Opportunity for us tohelp this wonderful organization six thirty five.
Right now, if you BBO haveKRCD talk station, gets yourself some odor
exsit od o r xit is heysix thirty eight fifty bive kr CD talk
station. Move beyond surviving dot orgis where you five the the charitable organization

(01:55):
we're talking to today with my guestdoctor Kelly McLain, surgical on cologists.
He's been dealing with breast cancer treatmentfor a long time, and breast cancer
treatment may heal the disease. Pause, but it's beyond that. It's something
that I personally, doctor, haven'treally given much thought to I think of
you know, the idea that youhave cured someone of breast cancer. You've

(02:16):
reached the finish line. You're wavingthe check or flag, all is right
in the world, and you're movingon with your life. It's not that
easy, is it. No,it's not. We've come a long way
with our treatment, but it takesa toll on the person. So surgery
changes the way people look and feel. Radiation tightened things so that people can't

(02:37):
move as well, and then themedical therapy causes weight gain, joint aches,
neuropathy where you can't feel your fingersand toes. So even though you're
done with the quote unquote fight, you're left with a new person and you
have to figure out who you areagain and how you're going to fit into

(02:59):
the world. So, in yourexperience, how did you this, this
therapy, this this move beyond survivingdot org? You get people involved in
outdoor activities I mean, and Iguess surrounding you with fellow travelers in the
sense that other people who have beenthrough this experience and are struggling with the
same issues you are. That emotionalsupport in and of itself has got to

(03:21):
be wonderful. But you're talking aboutgetting people out of the house and involved
in some outdoor activities. How doyou get that accomplished. Yeah, so
we need people to take the firststep and show up and we'll take it
from there. But which can bea tough. Yeah. We've had people
who are driving on the way thereand they're thinking about turning around and you

(03:46):
know, not not doing it andwhen the alarm goes off in the morning.
But if you get yourself out there, our whole goal is to get
people back in touch with their bodies, moving again, safe and supportive environment.
And it's amazing just how you saidthat. You know, everyone that's

(04:06):
there has been through a similar experienceand struggling with reconnecting with themselves and rediscovering
who they are. So it's amazingwhen people just start trying and it's okay
to fail. We're not there sayingoh you can't do this. You know,

(04:29):
try it again and you can accomplishmore. And it's just been amazing
what we've brought out in people.Well, you have long term experience with
this. My understanding is this startedback in twenty seventeen when you partner with
North Carolina Outward Bound School and wenton an excursion. Was it a multi
night backpacking and rock climbing adventure forbreast cancer survivors. That was the first

(04:57):
time you ever did that. Didyou have this like sort of moment of
like, oh my god, thisreally does work. We look at what
we've done for these women, theyhave transformed even over the short period of
time. Well, so when Iwas when I was growing up, I
worked for a ROPES course that anexperiential learning and really believed in it and

(05:18):
saw how it could bring out alot of confidence in people. And so
while I was going through my medicaltraining, I always kept it in the
back of my mind that this wasa powerful tool to help people through their
experiences. And when the time wasright that the two could come together,

(05:40):
that's what we did. And insteadof reinventing the wheel, this is what
Outward Bound does. I don't needto have the technical experience or tools.
I bring the medical knowledge and experiences. So we brought the group to them
and they did They did what theydo best and brought people out into the

(06:01):
outdoors and allowed them to discover howthey approach things and what they were capable
of doing. Is the physical activity, the the the the event or you
know, whatever your wherever you're meetingto engage in this is that's the vehicle
to bring people together. I guessyou know. It's a combination of maybe
the activity, but also again thatthat camaraderie and shared experience. I would

(06:26):
think that is maybe the primary driverto success for move beyond surviving. Yes,
definitely, because when people finish treatment, they're they're done, and they're
supposed to be relieved, and alot of people are relieved and their friends
and family want them to be awhole again, but they don't have the

(06:47):
same sorts of experiences of what it'slike to go through treatment, and so
to come together with other people whoknow what it's like to not be able
to feel your fingers or your feetanymore, have balance issues or have tightness
where in weakness because you've had surgeryand radiation makes a huge difference, and

(07:11):
it creates a safe environment so thatpeople are willing to try things that they're
not sure if they're going to beable to do because they know that they're
not going to be laughed at,they're not going to be looked down upon,
and people are going to encourage themto keep trying. Movie on Surviving
dot Org is a website. Youcan check it out. Now. This

(07:33):
is this local tri state area events. I mean we're speaking to the local

(08:18):
on Saturday, July twentieth, you'regoing to be sailing on acting late in

learned to Fail program and we're goingto be participating in that all neat So
my listeners who are in the categoryof folks breast cancer survivors, everybody invited

of all, all of our eventsare free to any breast cancer survivor any
age, any stage, as longas you're at a stable point in your
treatment. And currently what we dois we have one event at a time

(09:05):
Currently that event is full, butthere's always a bait list and people have
things come up and cancel, soalways sign up on the wait list.
You may get in. There's atwenty five dollars deposit which is refundable as
long as you show up, andit's just a guarantee of interests. And

(09:28):
we've been having one event a month, so always to look for the different
sign ups. Oh that's wonderful thing. It's nice to hear that you sell

And I know there's a lot ofbreast cancer survivors out there who could
really benefit from your organization. Sothank you on behalf of all the breast
cancer survivors out there and their families. Move Beyond Surviving dot org is a
