(00:00):
Now from the Star Rentals Sports tous your ninety three point three KJRFM sports
headlines and headlines here at high noon, brought to you by Buddies, Goodies
and glass always for twenty eight Buddies. MS capped off a sweep of the
Angels of the five to one winyesterday, four games up on the al
Westfield. Luis Castillo fantastic yet again. Seven innings, two hits, no
(00:22):
runs, struck out six. Herewe go more on that in just a
couple of seconds. They're off bythe way today for the first time in
seventeen days in Oakland tomorrow taking onthe A starting a series there before going
to Kansas City sand Cup final set. Oilers beat the Stars last night.
Panthers took down the Rangers on Saturday, Game one for the sand Cup Finals
Saturday five o'clock in Florida. Ibelieve you can hear that game either here
(00:44):
on nine to fifty or on ninetythird over on nine fifty or ninety three
point three KJFM, depending probably onour Sounders coverage along the way. They
next played in Kansas City on Saturday. Seahawks continue to practice. I'm out
here at Virginia Mason Athletic Center,Ota is taking place in just a couple
of minutes. Will be joined afterthe game by Mike Morris. How about
that? Oh yes, I justgot that conning. Oh man, I'm
(01:07):
so man, I'm not there.Yeah, we're going to chick in it
with him. He played for MikeMcDonald by the way at Michigan before kind
of red shirting last year. Tobe honest with you, with the Seahawks,
and we were just talking about thatwith Greg Bell. I think it's
a big part of what they're gonnado this season. Sad news out of
the NFL Hall of Fame. Offensivelineman Larry Allen from the Cowboys died suddenly
at the age of fifty two onvacation with his family in Mexico. Terrifying.
That's awful. Also in the NFL, Vikings and wide receiver Justin Jefferson
(01:30):
have agreed to a four year, one hundred and forty million dollar contract ext
engine one ten guaranteed. He isthe highest paid non quarterback in NFL history.
I got more notes on that asit relates to the team here in
Seattle. Let's get the show going. If you're out and about and you're
listening to us because your power's out. Hopefully are good friends at Puge of
Sound Energy. Seattle City like, get you going to a real quick.
(01:51):
It's a yeah. Across the state, it's crazy like Spokane looked in eastern
Washington they got crazy weather as well. When will summer start? I was
just telling you off the air,it feels it felt like a fall day
today. I love fall, favoritetime of the year absolutely. But you
know why it's my favorite time ofthe year is because, and you're probably
the same way. It's because whenfall hits, it's like, Okay,
(02:12):
it's been warm and nice and we'vehad a couple three months of just you
know, great weather. That's yeah, the the you know, the dirty
little secret of Seattle in this areaand western Washington is our best. We
have great weather in the summer hereusually and you know, not usually not
too hot and usually very dry,and it's all that, and so you're
ready for fall. Well we haven'thad summer yet. Man, come on,
let's go. I will take todayover the June gloom though, yeah,
(02:38):
I will take the sunny and windyand over that. Yes, well
that was going horrific man. Ohyeah, yeah, yeah, I just
need it to be nice on Junetwenty eighth for the Mayor and Maple Valley
Open. That's all I asked.I don't ask a lot in this life.
I'm asking for that. That's allI'm asking weather. God's out there,
all right. We got we gota first place baseball team to talk
about. We've got a massive contractin the NFL that's set in the bar
(03:01):
by Justin Jefferson. Some more CaitlinClark hate, which I don't know,
man, I I I the meangirl attitude in the w n B A
is is kind of weird. Ijust don't get it. I I you
know, I think Charles Barkley saidit the best. You know, like
(03:23):
you guys can go back to rideand commercial flights and and staying in two
star hotels, you know, likelike you like there's a reason. Well,
we guess some audio will play inthe two o'clock hour, some credible
audio I don't usually agree with orlike Pat McAfee, if I'm being honest,
just not my cup of tea,not a judgment, just not something
I always listened to her watch. But though he kind of nailed it today.
(03:44):
And we'll play a little bit ofthat. The word choices. I'm
not sure if i'd go with andI should tell you there was I think
there's something you got a beep outthere. I forgot to tell you about
that. I will make sure Ido. Yeah, but but yeah,
well we'll get that coming up atwo o'clock. I do have something good
for at one or at twelve fortyfive, we're gonna hit. It has
to do with our baseball team,if that's okay, Jess, I got
(04:05):
a little just a really it's somethingthat is going on with the Mariners.
No, it has nothing to dowith the team, like in terms of
the wins and losses, but Imean the team itself. Like like the
Athletic did a story today, JimBowden's I have pronounced the name Boden Bounce
Mountain Boden. Okay, Jim Bodendid a story in the Athletic Day.
I'm gonna bring this up with theMollywop guys. They're gonna join us at
one o'clock. And it was youknow, we've now hit the month of
(04:28):
June, third of the way throughthe season. We you know, are
the team here is in first place. They got a four game lead.
They're the only team above five hundredin the AL West. We talked about
that a lot on Friday, andbig shout out to our friends at Stoklahoma
Casino for the hospitality on Friday.Loved being out there. We had a
great time. Thank you very much. We enjoyed ourselves. Chris Nate and
myself. We're gonnamullay wop at oneo'clock with those guys today. But yeah,
(04:53):
I I he wrote a story todayand it was interesting. He ranked
one through thirty the teams, buthe also did in terms of of the
tiers of teams that might be lookingto buy before the deadline, teams that
are selling, and teams that arein between. And he had seventeen teams
that are still in it, whichjust kind of tell in fact, and
three in the American League West, the three he'd expect Seattle's, Houston and
(05:15):
Texas. But we'll go through that. And I kind of as looking through
the notes this weekend and the Mariners, whether the Mariners, Gary Hill had
some good notes. We get onthe show a couple weeks ago, get
Gary on again. Really enjoyed that. But you know, they have had
two sweeps this season at home, they're unbelievable. Last twenty two games at
Team w Will Park, seventeen andfive. I mean, just crazy.
(05:41):
Thirty seven quality starts this season. That is the most in Major League Baseball,
the number that really jumped off thepage. And thanks to carry,
the starters didn't give up a runin the series, like the starters did
not give up a run in theseries against the Angels. Now we could
all talk about how bad the Angelsare. That's fine, and that's legit
because they're bad. They're not agood baseball team. But Seattle is good.
(06:03):
And I think it's now we startkind of recognized that this is a
very good baseball team that has someflaws. And the flaws are they're twenty
six in run scored and they're twentyfourth and team ops no one player has
an on base percentage of three fiftyor better. So the flaws are offensively.
But maybe, just maybe this pitchingstaff is so elite, is so
good one through five, you couldmake an argument that the Yankees with their
(06:27):
team era, maybe have better topend starters in terms of one, two,
and three. And I'll ask theguys this coming up at one today,
you know Baltimore arguably as well, but one through five you're not going
to find a better rotation when yourbottom two guys are Bryce Miller and Brian
Wu Like those are four and fivein terms of your rotation, and those
are really good. Pass. Yeah. So, but he talked about what
(06:49):
they need and what they're gonna doand who they're gonna pick up or what
they you know, what Seattle coulddo. I'm gonna ask Chris because this
is you know, we joke arounda lot of Malley up at Chris four
a living working for him sports andeverything else, does prospects, and he
understands the system and the farm systemand who those guys are out there.
So I'm gonna ask him because everytime we get you know, it gets
brought up, like what are theygonna do? What should they do?
(07:11):
What can they do? The samename comes up every time. It's Harry
Ford, right, like, well, they can move Harry Ford. You
know, they still have cal Rawleyunder club control for a few more years.
Everyone assumes he's gonna leave because ScottBoris is his agent. I get
that. We all understand that.I tend to always side on I don't
assume anything in sports ever. ButI understand why that sentiment is out there
that because it's Scott Boris and hiswhat he thinks of Seattle allegedly and everything
(07:34):
else. Yeah, maybe Cal's butyou're not gonna hold on, you know,
to Harry Ford at the expense ofwinning for the next two or three
years when you know you have Calunder club control. Right, But there's
other guys out there, because asI'm looking through, like Baltimore is probably
in the best position, it soundslike to go out and make a move
with it before the deadline to increasetheir chances. And they're playing you know,
they got two team races to winthe division. I mean, what
(07:56):
a really, really good team Baltimoreand New York is not going to be
a division winner, is gonna bea wildcard team. I mean, think
about that for a second. That'sone of your wildcard teams is one of
those two teams. So Seattle needsto win this division and not only but
what do they need to do offensively? Well, they need to pick it
up a little bit. I justwent through that. But they're so good
pitching wise. I mean when youlook at those numbers, I mean,
(08:18):
it's crazy I mean to have thatnumber of quality starts this season, and
I mean thirty seven quality starts.Eight of the last nine have been quality
starts, six home stand games, six quality starts that just completed. But
they do need to do some things, so we'll talk about that coming up.
The Justin Jefferson contract, I dowant to touch in on that a
(08:41):
little later on, and I'll pointout how it relates to Seattle. The
numbers that he just got are crazy. I'm gonna try to make an argument
that Seattle has a better situation andtwo bargain receivers in DK Metcalf and Tyler
Lockett. I'll explain that coming upa little bit later on how you should
(09:01):
feel even better about that. AndI mentioned the WNBA little drama there going
on as well. I watched mostof the game on Saturday with Chicago and
Indiana, and I'm telling you rightnow, I'm not watching it if it's
just Angel Reese and whoever playing Indiana. I watched because of Caitlin Clark and
n tell people in that league, including officials, start to realize that people
are watching because of her. Itis Michael Jordan. She's Michael Jordan and
(09:24):
I'm not saying she's Michael Jordan's agoat, I get that, but she's
Michael Jordan right now. Yes,she's Wayne Gretzky, Michael Jordan. There
are certain individuals that carry an entireleague, and she is that. But
she's getting treated like crap by everybodyin that league, and I just don't
get it. We'll talk about thatcoming up a two o'clock. A really
cool, something good courtesy of theSeattle Mariners. That's at twelve forty five.
(09:46):
We come back, though I hadGeorge Phanton the other day, and
if I'm being honest, the Marinersare playing the exact same time and a
lot of you guys didn't get achance to hear him. But the return
of number seventy four. Number seventyfour is eligible over seventy four as eligible
George fans, will he be yourstarting right tackle this year? We'll talk
about that next live from the Rand R Foundation Specialists Broadcast Studio. Back
(10:16):
to Ian Furnance, Power Advice,Seattle's closest sports book, Snow Call Me
Casino on Sports Radio ninety three pointthree kJ r FM. Back at the
Virginia Mason Athletics Center Mariners in firstplace. Things are going well. We'll
hit on that with the We shouldhave a stand by. We could have
(10:37):
a positive Mollywop coming up at ChrisCrawford and Nathan Bishop. It could be
all lollipops and sunshine. That's whatit could be at one o'clock today.
Now, the last time we didthat, by the way, didn't turn
out well. Next to the nextweek or so. Oh yeah, they
had a little struggle. So we'llsee if the boys are in a good
mood or not. Today should beI mean, listen, you sweep the
(10:58):
Angels. Okay, yes, youshould win the series, but sweeping's hard.
They did that four games up inthe American League West. Pitching staff
rotation didn't give up an earned runagainst the Angels. The rotat the starters
didn't, i should say, andthey got timely hits when needed. Play
play a little add on ball aswell for a couple of those games,
(11:18):
and the end result is they comeaway with a three games sweep in a
four game lead in the American LeagueWest, which, yeah, the American
League West isn't good. Doesn't matter. You're the king of the dipsticks right
now and being the King is agood thing, especially because all too long,
you know, we went through thisa year ago. Yeah, last
year about this time, they hada similar record, but they were they
weren't as far above five hundred asthey were right now, but they also
(11:39):
were sitting there in a situation whichthey were six and a half games out
of first and so, you know, so like you take what you get.
They're doing what they should be doing, doing what they should be doing.
The question is what do they doto take that next step or do
they need to take a next step? Because if they win the AL West
and they got a home field advantageand they got that rotation, maybe they
can get by with that offense, which is right now ranking in the bottom
(12:01):
third and a lot of categories, including twenty six in run score. We'll
talk about that with the Boys comingup at one o'clock today, Stay tuned
for that. Speaking of the managers, they were playing last Thursday, dur
in the middle of our show,we really appreciate the schedule of Major League
Baseball sometimes when we're doing that.We had a great show last Thursday.
The highlight of that show was GeorgeFan returning to Seattle. Number seventy four
(12:22):
is eligible. Number seventy four iseligible. A few years of the Jets
in New York. Started thirteen gameswith the Texans last season, and he
wasn't expecting to start. He wasgoing to be a swing tackle backup last
year in Houston with the Texans.Instead he ended up starting thirteen games.
He comes here expected to be kindof your backup swing tackle, backing up
an upgrade over Stooning force Life tobe honest with you, backing up Abe
Lucas and Charles Cross. But rightnow Abe Lucas is still out, so
(12:45):
maybe there's a chance. George fansthe starter this season again, ninth year
in the NFL. Undrafted free agentoriginally by the Seahawks back in twenty sixteen,
made the team, made the roster. One of the better stories in
the NFL. There's guys like thatevery single year. And he came back
to Seattle. Had a great conversationwith him Thursday. I wanted to give
you that little taste of that yetagain, here's George. The first thing
(13:05):
I asked him about was how itfeels to be back here in the Virginia
Mason Athletics Center. I'm good man, how you doing. I'm good,
good to see you, Thank you, Happy to be back. What brings
you back? Like you you hadopportunity. You've been a couple of different
spots, different coaching staff for differentworld but here you are back in the
Virginia Mason Athletics Center. Yeah.I mean, I'll say, uh,
(13:26):
you know, right away Number onewas just uh, you know, opportunity
to come back here. Just feelslike home. So that was probably one
of the first parts of it.And then from there it was just like,
you know, opportunity to win witha team that I kind of started
with, you know, so youknow, looking at the roster, knowing
what coaching staff they was bringing in. H So when I got the call
(13:48):
from John, it was just like, man, this is a great opportunity
for me, uh, you know, on the back end of my career.
Uh, you know, don't knowwhere it's gonna go from here,
but it'd be great to come backhere, you know and possibly finished on
my career. So it was agreatbittun back end. Don't you're dating all
of us right? Thirty one yearsold, ninth NFL season. That's a
long way from Bowling Green Western. That's a long way from Western Kentucky and
(14:13):
playing hoops. Yeah, but I'mgonna go back in time twenty sixteen.
You come in here and we're justjust talking to corp and Smith, one
of the guys that covers a teamout there, and we're talking about like
undrafted free agents and the guys thatcome in and there's certain dudes that kind
of pop like and you go,oh that. And I remember in twenty
sixteen, all of us in thisroom, all of us media guys were
like, hey, like that guy, Like there's something there, Like they
they can't try to slide him throughthe practice squad. They can't. There's
(14:35):
something there with this guy. Yeah, and and lo and behold here you
are a nine year NFL veteran, which is just an amazing story for anybody
that came from where you came.Basketball players. We all know. What
do you remember from twenty sixteen, those first OTAs, mini camps and training
camps. Yeah, I think Iremember, like the thing that kind of
stands out the most would be,uh, you know Tom Cable uh and
(14:58):
just the belief he have me fromthe beginning, and that all the one
coach. Well, yeah, Imean I think that for Cable. You
know, you look at his historyof what he does with with athletes,
and I think it's the way thathe kind of taught me the game.
It's a little bit different compared towhat you know around the league that I've
(15:18):
seen, So just the way,you know, if you gotta, uh
this analogy he used all the time, it was clay. You know.
He always called me like his clay, so, uh, he can mold
me how he wanted to. Soit was one of those things that I
didn't come in with bad habits oranything like that, so he could kind
of like teach me like, hey, like this is how you do it,
and he always yeah, yeah, yeah. And then it was just
(15:39):
like it was like teaching me thatkind of related to me in basketball,
So he would like teach things tome in basketball language. So that was
like probably the main thing that theyhelped me. And then I'll never forget
like the first day he is outhere in No Tas, there was a
player here who like just trying topunk me, like you know, the
(16:00):
first play. Yeah, And atthe time, man, I wasn't going
for that when I was young.I was routing all the rest of the
stuff. So you know, nexttime, next time you next time I
went against someone trying to like putthem on the ground. And then Cable
was like, that's mixed these twothings. You're gonna be a good player.
So just don't ever like back downwith anybody, like don't don't do
any of that. Like this isa different kind of sport. So those
(16:22):
those are the two things that kindof like I took those two things and
kind of ran with it from there. Cable probably love that. Yeah,
that's love that. The basketball andthat, like comparison as a coach,
it's an interesting thing. I gotyou. I introduced these guys earlier,
the two guys Witworth in here, the two offensive tackles, and they were,
as you're saying that talking about thebasketball terminology, that they both played
(16:44):
hoops. But they're both kind ofnot right like athletes are athletes, right,
right, But but talking in away you can understand it. It
translates in basketball, translates to footballmost definitely, most especially your position,
right, Yeah, it's a powerforward. It definitely translates. You know,
you're trying to looking at it likeyou're playing defen Yeah, and past
protection. The quarterback is the roomyou know, I never want to like
turn your body from the room. You want to stay square to the room.
(17:06):
I say, square to the defenderand the tower the room. You're
back to the rim, you know. Anytime you take it on, power's
like you know, holding up thepost was somebody trying to back you down
the post. So you you know, teaching you how to like plant your
feet in the ground, Like howwould you how would you stop somebody they're
trying to back you down the post. It's the same way you would stop
a bull rush. That's awesome. So just things like that, man,
it was just like a little smallthings that kind of like clicked for me.
(17:26):
What was New York? Like theJets? I mean, you're just
in that's it's just such a differentworld than we are in the out here.
What was that like? It wasu It was an experience. It
was an experience, man, Andit wasn't you know, obviously it wasn't
all bad, you know, itwas it was. It was definitely I
think I probably played some of mybest football there. I grew as a
player, I would say I grewas a leader. It was an opportunity
(17:49):
for me to kind of go outthere and explore what was out there,
you know. Uh, and justgoing back bro it was just like another
reason why I'm happy to be backhere, Like you don't find organizations you
have here, like there are veryfew and in between. So uh,
just coming back here to a situationwhere you know, the whole building is
very positive. It's a lot ofgreat things going here in a great direction.
(18:11):
It just really really helps. Andyou mentioned John, like it's so
it's a different world now, Pete, and this, I mean it's an
entire one. Carl Scott's the onlyassistant coach left from Peatch regime. So
there's twenty two new coaches. ButJohn Schneider is still here and and his
lieutenants, all his personnel that thesame group there. How important was that
to you? If John wasn't here, do you think you'd come have come
(18:32):
back? Yeah, I don't know. I mean, I don't know if
I would, but they definitely playeda huge part in it. Man.
It was craziest thing ever, isthat? Okay? So last May?
Yeah, last May, I wasin Louisville. I was at the Derby
and you know, I'm having agood time. It's a really good story.
(18:53):
So you know, I'm at thederby, you know, obviously having
a good time, and I'm kindof my sunglasses on. I go into
the bathroom and uh, as I'mwashing my hands, I just hear somebody
say my name. I look leftand it's John So so it's John Man
and he's just you know, wejust chopping it up. And you know
(19:15):
this time, you know, Iwas, I was unsigned. I wasn't
for sure if I wanted to keepplaying. I was coming off a bad
injury, so I wasn't for sure. And he was just like, hey,
bro, if you ever want tocome out to Seattle and and you
know, whenever you finish up andretire, like I'm all four, I
would love to have you back.Yeah. And just the full circle moment
that, you know, uh,getting that phone off from John. Yeah.
(19:36):
Yeah, but but it was butit was, it was it went
the right way. Like, youknow, I was able to go down
to Houston House. It's just likea lot of success down there, yep,
yep with a team that wasn't reallysupposed to be that good. So
it was, you know, itwas it was great for me to kind
of get that the hunger back andplaying football game. You know so,
and at the time they didn't needme here at the time either, so
that you know, they had,you know, some situations that they had
(19:57):
set up right there. So Ithink the sign of the Houston thing was
it was a perfect perfect situation forme. But just the full circle moment
to get that call from John afterthe year before that, you know,
ran to each other, so itwas definitely a full circle moment before well,
I think it's it's probably safe tosay they would have wanted to they
would have liked to have kept youin twenty twenty. But I mean you're
(20:17):
a free agent. Money. Imean you've you've been able to, you
know, monetize a career, whichis awesome. Yeah, George fans with
us here Sattle Seahawks, and weall know and remember George coming back now
here. How different is it onthe field? Mike McDonald and his staff
do things it looks like entirely differentthan than what Pete did in a general
sense, George, what's what's what'sthe biggest difference as a player when you
(20:40):
step onto the field, in themeeting rooms, all this stuff compared to
when you were here before. Ithink the main thing that I think that
Mike is doing, which I thinkis pretty cool, is like he's not
coming in here, and he evensaid he's not trying to come in here
and change the complete culture of whatthe things that's going on here. Like
I think that, uh, youknow, he being here so long and
(21:00):
establishing that culture that they had here, Uh it kind of lingers, you
know, like there's there's still alittle bit of that stuff here and he's
not in here like whatever was lastyear, we're not doing no more.
It's not that kind of deal. It's like he's he's really mixing those two
things, and he's mixing his wayof his way of things into the building.
And he's also like, you know, acknowledging that there was a certain
(21:23):
culture here. There is a culturehere. There's the way that we do
things and the way that you know, the guys react to certain things in
the meeting room, the way thatguys you know, walk around the building
a lot of things. You know. So him coming in and being able
to be like, Okay, likeI I acknowledge the culture here, what
you guys have, I can addto it and we can kind of build
from there. And that's that lookslike what he's doing that. Culture is
(21:45):
winning, isn't it. Like whenI hear the term culture and it's like
there's some places and organizations in allsports and the culture is well we just
get by. Yeah, it doesthe culture here since I think since Mike
Holger, Yeah, the standard Mike, Mike said it. He took it
to the next level, and aguy in that wants to it's it's a
winning culture. Uh, And that'swhy you come here right Like there's a
Lombardi Trophy out front, like likeit's it's still here. But along those
(22:08):
lines that, the how the coachesact is different. You know, you
weren't here with with the previous offensiveline coach. But I'm watching Scott huff
who we watched coach at Washington thelast couple of years. He had the
best offensive line in the country. That was the award they were given last
season as a group, and Ijust think highly. I think we all
think very highly of him. Boy, I've I've never seen the attention to
(22:30):
detail and the teaching that we saw, whether it's you know, bringing the
quarterback and for past pro and there'sWalker in there, the walkthrough. Basically
you're doing things like that tell peopleabout what Scott huff is, who he
bring, what he brings to thetable, and and how kind of different
he is and maybe other off offensiveline coaches you've had. Yeah, alis
got a lot, man, Ithink exactly what you said, Like you
(22:52):
could tell that he's really locked intothe game. He understands it, and
I think they teaching really well.So I think for him, for this
room is a really young room, like they're twenty twenty two, twenty three,
you know, obviously being late theold guys in the room. But
uh but yeah, man, likefor for those guys who still be young,
(23:12):
and then get a guy like himwho really understands the technique. He's
an ex player, he's you know, been around them for a long time,
been with some really good coaches. You know, he really knows what
he's talking about. So I thinkit's coool. I mean, I'm still
trying to learn from him too.He got some things that I like,
you know, so, uh,did you a little bit? Yeah,
man, most definitely, and notrespect that a lot, Like he's definitely
(23:33):
like and sometime you know, yearsago, Uh, I know, right,
like you're like, you're honestly mostdefinitely man, And I think that's
a testament the amount of all thatI played, and you know, I
understand, I understand things a differentdifferent way than you know, who helped
you when you first got here offensiveline wise, like who are the who
are the leaders? That kind ofwalk man? When I got here,
(23:55):
we were really young. We werereally young, you know. I think
Justin Britt was ours in the room. He was and that was like his
third year and Fetti came in together. Yea, Uh, we were young.
I think they brought in JaMarcus webhe got hurt early in the season.
But as far as like, youknow, who helped me with some
technique and stuff like that, HowardMudd, how Mud, Howard Mud how
(24:18):
Mud? Uh I got the Iactually met Scott Huffed through Howard Wud.
So yeah, Howard m was Itwas a person that helped me with out
the technique and stuff. But asfar as the players, uh yeah,
like Britt was our was our vettingroom at the time. What impresses you
about this offense and Ryan grubbing whathe's gonna do? I would say just
the way that they go about theoperation operations was pretty uh. They they
(24:45):
wanted to be really clean and theyand they have a standard of things being
really clean. And if you goback and look at them, and you
do, they're really clean. Youknow that they moved fast, they played
fast. It's a clean offense.So yeah, I think that's that's probably
the main thing is that, asin mini camps are really important. And
I mean that in a sense likeveteran guys. Sometimes they want to come,
sometimes they don't. I get that, we all get that. But
(25:07):
when you talk about how fast theywant to play, how clean they want
to play, how precise things haveto be. Is that why this time
of the year is kind of important. Yeah, it's important. It is
important, don't these guys watching thatguy looks he's like like Nick, George
is a vet. You know whento like get to the end of the
line. You know what. Ithink those new those new guys need to
(25:30):
hit the sled. I'll you don'tneed to hit the sled every time a
rotation. Get get out the way, man. But I love it,
George. Before I let you go, you've had a chance to you know,
now see Geno Smith and that receivingcorps. You know we only see
this is the second time we've beenhere. But you know, I know
(25:51):
DK has been here a little bitand you've watched Tyler and Jackson spent in
Jigba, the running backs and Gino. What impresses about the skill positions that
you have here? I got alot, you know, they got a
lot. They got guys who theycan rotate and play a lot of different
positions. Uh. But man,I'm telling you know, the most impressive
piece to this offense to me isthe running back room. Man like that
(26:11):
was there's some dudes in that room, man like that. Yeah, both
of them, both of those tworunning backs and yeah, so and you
know they even got some more guysin therese really good players. But uh,
but that room is gonna be reallyspecial. Uh. Last thing for
it. He's in the inside,so you don't see him a lot,
I don't think, but depending onwhat you're doing. Team drills we were
(26:33):
watching just for the first time,I have kind of laid eyes closely on
by m Murphy, the second intheir first round pick this season, kid
from Texas and first of all,has never missed leg day. Yeah my
goodness, yeah, yeah, heis explosive and my my very untry,
untrained media guy eyes like that's anexplosive, impressive athlete. What have you
seen from the rookie? Yes,he was. He actually was one of
(26:56):
my favorite UH defensive linemen in thecollege last year. I was in Houston
last year, so we got towatch a lot of those Texas games,
and he popped off the screen forme, Like just the way that he
plays obviously not be funny, butlike natural leverage that he has sure uh,
and the way his ability to getlike off of blocks really quick,
great hand placement uh. And thenyou know, I think the the dope
(27:19):
thing for him is that he haslike a good veat in that room.
That's gonna Jared, Yeah, Bro, that's that's gonna that's gonna push him.
You know, they're gonna go Gonnaushar'sgonna push him for sure. J's
gonna push him, and it's gonnabe uh in the best positive way,
and they're gonna hope to the standardin that room. So I think that
he's in a good situation. Heknows what he's walking into. You know,
(27:41):
I think I seen an interview hesaid he grew up in Seahawlls fans.
Yeah, so he knows he's walkinginto so and I'm excited for him
for sure. I'm excited to haveyou back. I think you are as
well, and I think everyone hereis excited to see you back. I
got one quick more thing. Iknow Rich' stand out here. Just when
you came back you mentioned it wasn'tright a year ago because they had some
depth, they had some guys. You know, we're hoping to see Abe
(28:03):
Lucas back out there, and hopefullyI think Mike McDonald's sad he should.
You know, he's hoping to havehim out there for training camp ready to
go. Both him and Charles werebanged up last season. They see the
drop off in this league if youstart going like depth, that tackle is
hard, right. Were there anyassurances, promises, what not? Even
what what was told you? Becauseyou came here as a veg you want
(28:23):
to play, but at the sametime, versatility is a big key.
What did they tell you in termsof what your role? What did they
firstee because they got two young guyson the outside. Yeah, No,
my my role is to come hereand back those two guys up. That's
my role. I'm coming in herethe same my same road that was in
Houston last year. You know,I just happened to have to play all
those games. Yeah, Like Isaid, well, but with the situation
(28:44):
when somebody got hurt and they neededme in there. So my my role
is still coming here and back thoseguys up. You know, I'm obviously
gonna go out here and compete. But the end of the day, that's
the role, you know, that'sthe that's the road that was understood.
So if you got to start, yeah, but but if it's a situation
I gotta play, I'm prepared toplay, you know. So and then
also man like I think that alsois just like come in here and help
(29:07):
these guys you know, get tothe next step too, like you know,
as far as uh technique and differentlittle questions that I can answer for
him and even film like the wayyou know, looking for certain stuff.
So that's my role. Man,I'll come in here. I'm erasing that
role and I'm just like I said, I'm just happy to be back.
Welcome back to Seattle. Thank you. George joined join me on Friday and
(29:29):
getting a chance to watch him. He's still working with the number one.
Still no sign of Abe Lucas.I popped out there for a few minutes
in the freezing cold weather and it'sso crazy because it looks so beautiful.
Yeah, we're laughing at we're laughingout there. But yeah, he's still
working to right tackle in place ofAbe Lucas while he's still out with an
injury. We'll have some more noteson practice a little bit later on up

(31:45):
Angels and they put the kapper onwhat has just been a magnificent six and
one home stand. Here's the Infernetsand we mullywop on this Monday. Mariners
in first place up by four gamesin the American League West. It will
be a joyous occasion to mollywop today. Chris Crawford, Nathan Bishop back with

But yeah, great stuff there,Simply Seattle, Simply Sail dot com.
The boys are with me. Wegot a lot to get to today.
Let's start with opening statements as always. After a three game series sweep
of the La Angels, Nathan Bishop, away, you go, sir man.
I gotta say it's really just nota good idea to have me on
(32:52):
the radio this much, but Ireally appreciate it. It's nice to be
back here again. I feel likewe just did this. I just checked.
The Seattle Marians have in first placesince May twelfth. I'm going to
go do some research before our nextshow and figure out because I'm thinking they're
going to be in k not gonnawould. I'm thinking they're going to be
in first place next week when wedo the show, and I'm going to
(33:12):
check and see the longest first placestreak they've had since two thousand and one,
and I'm going to guess that weare not already there rapidly approaching it.
It was great to see the teamjust take care of business for once.
I think we talked on Friday aboutthe show where they won three out
of four against Houston and did itin the classic Mariner fashion of wait,
how'd they win? What? Thatwas weird and kind of horrible to watch.
(33:35):
Instead, we got three straight gamesagainst this weekend against what I think
Chris is free to disagree with mehere, the worst baseball team they've played
all year thus far. The LosAngeles Angels are somehow significantly worse in the
Oakland A's. That statement doesn't reallyneed anything more. And now they're going
to follow that up with three gamesagainst the Oakland A's, and it's just
a time to keep it running, you guys. This series, then three
(33:57):
with the Royals, who are afeisty, good ish team, but then
three more against just the actual worstteam in baseball with the Chicago White Sox.
This is the stretch right here, guys, where the Merits can build
up that cushion to withstand the restof the season in first place. Chris
Crawford, Way, you go,Yeah, good series, bad bad baseball
(34:19):
team. That Angels team, Nathan. I mean, I thought the Rockies
were gonna be the worst team theyplayed all year. But they've still got
one more, and they've got oneThey've got a series against the White Sox,
who are just absolutely dreadful. ButI was really impressed with the starting
pitching. And you had to belike even Logan Gilbert start where he gave
up the six or excuse me,he gives up the four over the six
innings. That was a fine start. It should have been a two run
(34:43):
start. Like I said, ifTomkinszone knew how to play the outfield,
he does not. I I washappy with how they played. It wasn't
the most beautiful baseball that I've seenhim play, but it was effective.
And you're taking advantage of this divisionright now. Eighty percent of this division
just does not look very very goodor is dealing with massive injuries, and
you're the other twenty percent and beingin first place at the start of June
(35:06):
and in first place with a prettygood cushion is something that I'll sign up
for every time. Let me,I mentioned this earlier in the show,
and I want to kind of hitthis and we'll kind of we'll branch off
after as well. But with thesweep, they're twenty one and eleven at
home right now, yah so,and their pitching staff, as great as
(35:29):
their numbers are, the home androad splits are pretty dramatic. But that
home record, Nathan, that lotof that house to do because the pitchers
at home have used the marine layerto their advantage maybe oh one hundred percent.
Yeah, I think that you're seeing. I do not have the analytical
knowledge to be able to go intothe Marina's proprietary analytics and figure out what
(35:50):
it exactly they've unlocked, because it'snot like Mariners starters strike out more batters
than anybody else, but they dowalk feughur which is obviously a huge help.
But there is something that they figuredout about how to pitch in T
Mobile Park that is really paying off. The twenty one on eleven feels a
little bit fluky to me, butthere's no there's no debating the fact that
they have pitched much better at homethan on the road. And like Chris
(36:13):
just intimated, it's not the defense, uh they've got down can zone running
around there out in the outfield. It is the pitcher's stepping up and shutting
it down. And like we've mentionedtime and again, that's what makes this
roster go. It's one through fivethrough the rotation every time out when they
pitch, it cooks well. AndI guess, Chris, that's what I
was wondering, is did we havewe seen a team? Now we'll get
to the offense later. Let's justjust from a pitching staff rotation, bullpen
(36:37):
to a certain extent. Al thoughagain we've talked about it before, they're
not healthy in the bullpen, andthey do have some holes or not.
I think we'd all agree they're notas deep on the bullpen as it were
last year. But let's let melet me are they is just do we
give some credit to the front office, Like they've built a team with that
record, They've built a team forthat ballpark. Yeah, they have,
(36:59):
and pphysized starting pitching. They emphasizedit in those drafts by taking Logan Gilbert
and George Kirby in the first round. Emerson Hancock also a first round pick
by this team, who had hisshare of good moments as well in twenty
twenty four. Yeah, they deservea lot of credit. The player development
staff even deserves more credit for me, because you know, George Kirby and
Logan Gilbert were viewed as first roundtalents, but they were reviewed more as
(37:20):
like mid rotation, back end, safety, floor over ceialing type of guys.
Well, you've seen there's plenty ofceiling in those arms as well.
So when you combine that with LouisCastillo, the trade giving up a lot
of prospect talent, a lot ofprospect capital to get a guy like that,
and he's been absolutely outstanding on topof the job they've done with developing
Bryce Miller and Brian Wu. Yeah, you have to give him a ton
(37:43):
of credit. It doesn't excuse everythingthat they've done by a long shot,
but you do have to give themcredit for realizing that starting pitching in this
ballpark, if you can be dominant, you can be really, really,
really good. Now they're just goodright now, but there's potential for more.
It's AMOI Monday, brought to youby our good friends at Simply Seattle,
Simply Seattle dot com, molliwap fifteenat check out for your simply Seattle
(38:06):
needs. I'm I want to godown and road. Jim Bowden from The
Athletic wrote a story today and we'llget into the next step. Like you
know, the premise of it waswho are the buyers who were into June
two months to go before the tradedeadline? Who are the buyers? Who
are the sellers? Who the guysin between? He had seventeen teams right
now that are still quote buyers.Because there's you know, I mean,
(38:27):
it's just the way it is.There's a seven and that includes Texas and
Houston by the way, that hecan't consider still be in it. But
he also did it. But witha ranking system of one through thirty.
He had Seattle number nine before Igo down needs and strengths and weaknesses,
and we're gonna spend some time. We're gonna lean on Chris a little bit
too for his knowledge of the systemand compared to maybe some other systems like
(38:50):
Baltimore in terms of what they cango for in terms of trade and what
they can give up and what theyhave in terms of equity and stuff.
I ask you this and the theinterest of the new world of college football.
We still have top twenty fives.Let's do it even at top thirty.
I don't ask you to go onethrough thirty, But the Mariners at
number nine, where would you rankhim in terms of the power rankings right
now? In baseball? Chris somewherearound that. And my buddy DJ Short
(39:15):
just did power rankings for NBC Sportsand had them at nine as well.
I think that's a fair ranking.Probably the weakest of the division leaders.
I think that's fair to say.And then you have wildcard teams like Atlanta
and New York are excuse me,Baltimore at this point that I would put
above them there, So I thinknine is fair. They're definitely in the
(39:36):
top ten. Was certainly cemented inthat top dozen for me whether or not
that's good enough. It's a differentstatement. But they're in that top nine.
They are cemented into that playoff mix. I think it's fair ranking.
Okay, I'm gonna get Nathan's andI'm gonna branch that question out for a
second. Nathan, where would youput him about the same or are high
or lower? Yeah? I thinkthat that's perfectly fine. I would just
(39:57):
add, since I'd be remiss toneglect my brain, that I would say
they're right around nine to eleven orso, and that is just exactly where
they want to be, just bangon. They are exactly as Baseball expanded
the playoff the playoff field. Thereis just no motivation to be any better
than that. Can you imagine? There's just no our line for them at
all. So yeah, mission accomplished. I suppose who are the better teams
(40:20):
in the American League? Obviously Baltimore, New York, Baltimore, New York,
Cleveland, And I'm not one hundredpercent sure that Kansas City isn't better
than them either. I just reallylike what Kansas City lines out there every
day and have some pretty good startingpitchers as well. I think have a
higher ceiling than Seattle. Seattle amuch higher floor because of the depth of
(40:42):
the rotation. But I think that'skind of probably a tie at this point.
Nathan, that's the thing. Wouldyou go behind that? I think
I could. While you guys talk, I'm just gonna double check because last
time I checked, they were somethinglike seventh or eighth in the American League
and run differential, which is notthe be all, end all, but
I do think that it's an He'sin that range as well. For me
too, I would say Minnesota isin that range. I would put him
(41:05):
a notch above Tampa Bay and Boston. In Toronto at this point, I'd
put him a notch above the Tigersobviously, and then the division obviously as
well. So yeah, I thinkthat's fair. I just checked their sixth
and run differential and they're one excuseme, seventh, one run worse than
the Texas Rangers, who are insecond place. Somewhere around the middle of
the road of the American League wouldbe my answer, but higher middle end
(41:27):
of the American League. I thinkthere's this This show has no rules,
so we will break any baseball guyrules. Right now, I think it's
safe to say, like the crazything is, look at the American League.
If we say power ranking wise, that that Baltimore, New York,
New York, Baltimore, whatever, whatever order you want to go in.
I guess maybe Yankees now right, but like, whatever order you want to
go in with those two teams, they're one two, Chris, that's a
(41:51):
scary team. That's going to bea wildcard team, Like like, yeah,
that is a scary ass wildcard teamthat you're gonna see. Yeah.
Absolutely, And it's one of thereasons why you want to be that at
least third seed, because you avoidthat scary wildcard team and you'd be playing
a team like Kansas City or Minnesotaor maybe just maybe the second place team
(42:13):
in the ALS. I guess couldpossibly sneak in there. But that's a
big difference. Not only you getto play home games, but you get
to avoid one of those teams untilat least the Alds. Hopefully the Alcs
would be really nice to avoid untilthat point. But yeah, it does
make a pretty big difference to avoidthose teams. They are clearly the best
two teams in the American League.I just wanted to add too, while
(42:35):
we're talking about power rankings, Ithink The power rankings are fun. It's
a fun exercise, and I haveno issues with what we're talking about.
But I do think it's instructive aswe're doing it to almost draw these tier
lines while we're doing it. Becauseif we're just gonna do the American League,
we've got you know, the Yankeesand Baltimore. Big break. That's
a tier right there. That's Tierone. We just saw the Mariners play
those two teams. They were notin the same league as those guys.
(42:57):
Then I'd say you've got Tier two, which is probably just of Cleveland at
this point. Then you take anothertier break, and then pretty much wherever
you want to put the Mariners inthat next tier. I don't really have
an issue with it all in thatKansas City, Minnesota, Seattle, maybe
Texas if they get a little healthierkind of range. Yeah, which is
interesting because I mean, I goback, but I brought it up just
for that reason. Is that, you know, like, like you're winning
(43:21):
the division seems like it is anecessity. I don't know for far enough
into the season that we can reallytruly say that, but I'm looking at
it right now, like I thinkwinning that division is a necessity because it
seems like a long shot right nowthat the second wild card is going to
come out of the ALE West.Right Well, yeah, as Jay Bunier
said, screw the wild card.I want them to win the division,
(43:44):
man. I want that, Andit's not just about seating in playoffs.
I want another division band at whichtakes me to this and I want to
bring this up like we are.Sample size is big enough now. It's
no longer Early Jokers society. It'sthe sample size is big enough. I
just don't think I think we can. Can we definitively say I'll say it.
I feel this way one hundred percent. There's no excuse for this team
(44:06):
not to win the AL West.Chris none, no, none, zero
zero zero, with two teams nottrying in Oakland and LA, with Houston
and Texas having the issues that theyhave. Texas is starting guys that I
had literally forgotten existed a couple ofdays ago then and having massive issues with
the rotation. We don't know whatwe're going to get for Max Scherzer.
(44:28):
You don't know if you're going toget Jacob deGrom back at all. And
then you look at that Houston teamand their issues. Jose or Keaty is
going to meet with a doctor todayto determine what's the next step for Hitton
is. Their lineup is not asdeep as it used to be. There
is zero excuse to not win thisdivision. They have to. If they
don't win the division, We'll seewhat happens in the postseason, but the
(44:49):
regular season will be an objective failureat this stage if they don't win the
division. Nathan nodding your head.Yes, Oh, sorry, the listeners
can't see me on my head, right, yeah, no, I totally
listeners. Oh right, right, right right, I'm new to this,
Sorry about that. Yeah, II one hundred percent agree. I I
think it's it's not just imperative becauseof how long it's been, but I
(45:13):
think it's it's just imperative because thatneeds to be the goal. I want
to feel like that's the goal, and I want to feel like even that
that's not the finish line for thisteam. If the aos is this bad
and the Mariners win the division witheighty four wins, that's great. Again.
I'm really happy with the banner tobe hung at Team Mobile Park.
I don't think that the teams, the organization necessarily needs to feel overly enthusiastically
(45:35):
great about that at that point, especially given what does or does not happen
between now and then. Ian AndI'm sure that's kind of what we're leading.
What kind of additions are they goingto make? What can they make?
Well? I guess and that's whyI bring it up, Like every
team, with maybe the exception ofthat top tier, if we want to
look at Baltimore in New York,I think, you know, every team's
got its blemishes, right, everyteam's got it, and they all have
(45:55):
their issues. They all have thatalong the way. For Seattle, offensively,
twenty six in runs scored, twentyfourth in team ops. Not one
player has an on base percentage ofthree poin fifty year higher for this roster.
Julio is a singles hitter, Agood singles hitter, by the way,
like good singles hitter, but asingles hitter. So offensively, they're
(46:20):
a little bit challenged. They Idon't know if it's deceiving. I don't
Deceiving is probably not the right word. They were able to play some add
on this weekend to kind of changea couple of scores. You know,
obviously, what happened on Saturday, but they were able to play add on
and pull away at least in thelast couple of games. But by and
large, isn't that Chris the sameas a lot of teams that you know,
(46:42):
like Seattle has no issues pitching wise, but there's teams that do that
are better offensively or vice versa.Yeah, there are no perfect teams in
this Like New York is as closeto as complete a roster as you have
right now, and they're gonna getGarrett coleback in about a month, so
that's even more exciting for fit ofMajor League Baseball. But like Baltimore has
rotation issues, Cleveland certainly has lineupissues. Minnesota's got issues. We've talked
(47:08):
that nauseum about the issues with theteams behind him in the Al West.
One of the problems is right nowthough, and you brought it up in
Boden's article that like, there areso many teams still in contention right now
that you're not having a lot ofsellers. It's one of the reasons why
the Mariners went and signed a guywho's hitting one twenty today because they think
the sun be a guy. Yeah, So Victor Roblez is a guy who
(47:31):
was probably a top five prospect inbaseball at one point and started out pretty
good. He had a nice littlerookie season and had some nice cups of
coffee before that. He just doesn'tmake hard contact whatsoever, and he has
some issues with swing and miss.He is a patient hitter. The reason
you bring him in is he's anexcellent defensive player. He is one of
(47:51):
the better outfielders in baseball. Inhis last full season, he was in
the ninetieth percentage of outs above average, and he has a good throwing arm
as well. Be a spell forthe left field, for the right field,
for the center field. And look, Jonathan class A is not ready
to go and he needs bats inTriple A, so you might as well
bring in a fourth outfielder who canactually, oh, I don't know,
play the outfield. So I knowpeople panic and they take a look at
(48:15):
the stats and say, why areyou signing this guy to has three hits
and twenty five at bats and it'sbeen a bad offensive player. Well,
it's just your fourth outfielder. Andif you're you can do a lot worse
for a fourth outfielder than somebody whocan run who can go get it in
the outfield and has a little bitof history of success as well. Okay,
uh yeah, he's he's Sam Haggertyright like in a sense like they
(48:37):
they've lost him for the year andthey're looking for a guy that better defender
than Hagardy's but very similar profile interms of the speed right not probably going
to be able to hit right handedpitching, So yeah, similar. So
that's what you do. You goout and you get a guy that like
that's we've been talking about that, have we not? Like like Nathan,
I know Nathan loves watching Canzone playin the outfield. I know you thoroughly
(48:57):
enjoy that. But that's why,Nathan, that's why they went and got
this guy. And I the thingI find weird is that they were able
to get him and nobody else, you know, below them, and the
Standings signed him first. That's kindof the weird thing for me, But
what have you. That's fine, they get him, But Nathan, it
is like an upgrade which does helpyour team, Like you're a little bit
better baseball team because defensively now youcan be better late innings right well,
(49:19):
And keep in mind the two likeand I'll jokeing aside, two of your
primary corner outfitters are dom kin Zoneand Mitch Haniger, who, for different
reasons, they are just not verygood defensive players. If you get up
in the game late, late inning, seventh inning and later, and you
are ahead by one or two runs, you want Victor Roblos in the outfield
way more than you want Dom CanzonerMitch Haniger. You know you're not worried
whether he's gonna hit. In additionto what Christy you said about Jonathan Colasse,
(49:40):
he already touched on it. Justto emphasize too, the great thing
about Robust. If he doesn't playfor a week, it doesn't matter.
Jonathan Colosse needs to play and he'sstagnating on that bench. So there's just
there's nothing, but there's no reasonto not make this move in. I'll
be honest with you. When Isaw it, and it was, you
know, the Robos was a correspondingmoved to Class A getting sent down today,
(50:01):
And when he got sent down,I thought, damn, didn't he
get sent down already? Because it'slike, because of what David just said,
I thought I thought he already gotsent down. I haven't seen him.
It feels like he's already gone.Is like, no, he was
already here, and you're right, you got a young guy's got to play.
Okay, here's what we do.We're gonna come back. I want
to hit on this because going backto that article and we just touched it
on it. Priority one, prioritytoo, just the top two priorities that
(50:24):
need to get done before July thirtyfirst for this team to do what it
can, not to be fifty fourpercent, not to be a wild card
team, but to win a damndivision. And I think what you guys
just said, be a top tierteam that doesn't have to worry about you
don't want to see Baltimore or NewYork in the first round. And I'm
(50:45):
listen, by the way, forall those thinking that we're too negative,
I'm chalking this thing up to thisas a playoff team right now today on
June second. All right, that'sthat's kind of what I'm doing. June
third. I'm sorry, I'm chalkingthis up. I'm talking playoffs. I'm
not talking about like, hey, let's what's we're talking playoffs and what's the
next step. What's what's Priority one? And what's Priority two, and then
(51:07):
we'll also get into what they cando in terms of making moves because of
their system. The good news iswe have a Nathan Do you know anybody
that knows anything about the system andthe farm? Yeah, I've got this
guy on the zoom call and Ithink it says Steven Ah Smith's WNBA Source
sixty nine knows the system inside andout. So we're ready to go.
Yeah, So we'll check in withSteven A. Smith w NBA source when
(51:29):
we come back and find out whobesides Harry Ford, can they make some
moves with Chris Crawford, Nathan Bishop. It's a Mollywap Monday, brought to
you by Simply Seattlesimply Seattle dot commolliwop fifteen at checkout and we'll fire that
next coming on on nine three pointthree KTERFM live from the R and R
(51:51):
Foundation, specialists broadcast studio back toIan furnance, powered by Seattle's closest sportsbook
Snop Call me Casino on Sports Radioninety three point three kJ r FM,
rolling on on a Monday afternoon. He internesced with you at the Virginia Mason
Athletics Center. So I'm here, but the Molly Whoppers Chris Nate are out
(52:14):
and about so far power has stayedon over on the peninsula, so to
speak. So it's a bonus. We're all We're all kind of on borod
time, I think right now, fellas, But the guys are still here,
so let's let's get it out intoit. Mollywap fifteen, by the
way, simply sail dot com Molliwapfifteen to checkout, and you can get
that nice discount when you're getting coolstuff like my Kingdome sweatshirt. Here I've
(52:34):
got going on, Nathan, whatdo you wearing a Sonics hat? Is
that that? No? Mary, that's an old school nineties Marina's hat right
as a Mariner's hat on as well. So Jess has her sweatshirt slash jersey
on again. Has that thing beenwashed ever? By the way, Yeah,
actually every time I wear it becauseI end up like falling asleep without
changing sometimes and very much I'm ahot sleeper, so yeah, gotcha,
(52:58):
All right, let's all right, fellas, Marriagers. I mentioned this twenty
six in Runs twenty fourth team.Ohps. They it's obvious there that there's
probably a need give me need oneand need to Priority one priority two for
this team if they're gonna do morethis year than just be a wild card
playoff team or a team that's kindof hanging around in September hoping to squeeze
(53:19):
in and hopefully sneaking the playoffs. So they're go to win the AL West
and then go deep in the AmericanLeague playoffs. That we know they've got
the pitching rotation one through five Anothing wrong there, But what do they
need to do one into priority onepriority to Nathan'll start with you, Well,
I think the obvious one is justthump great quality, above average,
every day major league hitting. Ithink the easiest and most obvious place to
(53:43):
look is the corner outfield. Ithink that's maybe a difficult conversation with Mitch
Haniger at some point, or oneof the Mitches, both of the Mitches.
I don't know. You could honestlycast a pretty wide net there since
you could probably improve offensively in eitherof the corner outfield spots. I know
ty France has has been hitting betterat first base, I still think you
could upgrade there second base. Imean, like Chris said on Friday,
(54:05):
we've got the CJ precisis with misterPolanco at seconds hamstrings, So I think
you can look at an upgrade there. I really don't care where, Ian.
I just want another really good orin this this roster's case, a
really good major league hitter that's goingto play every single day and need to.
Is bullpen depth badly needed? Theyare going to They are already using
(54:28):
Andre's Munos a whole lot this yearand he's been fantastic and they have to
because there's just really not another elitearm and less Santos can get back.
But that's just a coin flip atthis point. Ye, So get a
lit offensive upgrade bullpen depth. Yeah, nice to get a add on the
last couple of days to to toand then a day off first time in
seventeen days. Rest. Okay,Chris, I'm sure it's similar position wise,
(54:52):
thump wise, where are we lookingat? Yeah? Absolutely? And
the nice thing is the scary thingis that there are so many places you
can upgrade, like realistically, likeoutside of catcher, center field and probably
short stop. You could say,oh, we can have an upgrade here.
We can figure something out to makethis team better, you know.
(55:14):
So Yeah, you have to geta bat. In fact, I would
say priority one and two as bad. As much as this bullpen concerns me,
I would say, you still needtwo more bats. You need two
more offensive weapons that can make thisoffense a more complete lineup. And you
know, I always hate when peoplesay, you know, we're getting this
player back, that's our deadline acquisition. Just getting Mitch Garber and Jorge Polanco
(55:36):
playing at that level that they havenormally played at are guys that you can
kind of put into that acquisition thing. So maybe you don't need to get
two and you need to get oneand one of those guys to be a
whole heck of a lot better. But this offense needs help as much as
firing the offensive coordinator as getting asmuch as getting rid of the John Donovan
(55:57):
of the Seattle Mariners maybe makes thema little bit better. For now,
it's not quite enough. You definitelyneed to still get some offense. Guy.
We'd even touched in that that happenedduring our show on Friday when you
guys were with me. Still callme because seeing we didn't touch it on
that, Like all the quotes Isaw from Service this weekend were, well,
you know, we just guys freedthemselves up a little bit, And
well, couldn't that have been dictatedby the manager through the offensive coordinator slash
(56:19):
hitting coach without firing your good friendin the process, Like that made no
sense to me. I listen,I'm not the smartest guy in the room,
far from it, not even thesmartest guy in this particular room.
And I'm by myself in this roomright now. But I'm still trying to
figure out, like, if itwas as simple as quote freeing these guys
up mind wise, Chris, couldthey not have just done that by keeping
(56:40):
the same guy and having a changeof flawed I don't get it. I
don't get it either. It's Iswear that some of these hirings get made
simply so that you can fire somebodyelse, Like I think that you just
hire some of these dudes. Soit's like, when we need a scapegoat
and we want to make some sortof pr move that makes it look like
(57:00):
we're making a move to get betterwithout actually having to make a move to
get better, Well let's just firethe thing that we called the offensive coordinator
or the guy who's stretch assistant tothe regional manager of hitting or whatever the
heck you want to call it.You can make a move like that instead
of actually making a trade to makethe team better or making a front office
regime change. I think that they'rejust hired to be scapegoats at this point.
(57:23):
All right, malla wat Monday broughtto by Simply Seattle, Simply Seattle
dot com malliwap fifteen to check outChris over and over again. And I
think Baltimore, if I'm not mistaken, and help me out here, Baltimore
might be in the best position interms of farm depth to make moves to
improve their ball club. Right, where does Seattle? Where does Okay?
(57:45):
So that's the bar. Where doesSeattle sit on that list? Because the
same name comes up over and overagain, Well, are they gonna have
to trade harry Ford? They're gonnahave to trade Harry Ford. They can
have trade harry Ford over and overagain. Maybe Classe's name will come up
or a handcock as well. Giveus, give us an idea. If
they want to go out and getupgrade the team, they're gonna and to
(58:07):
do it with someone that truly wouldupgrade the team. What do they have
that they can work with they havequite a bit. I mean, they're
not in that tier of Baltimore, and they're probably not even that tier of
the next group, but they're notfar from it, and they are certainly
in the solid tier. One ofthe things that this farm system has is
they have a ton of shortstop depth. Like you have something like six out
(58:30):
of your top ten prospects or shortstops. You have Cole Young, you have
Colt Emerson, you have Felon Celliston, Michael Royo, Ryan Bliss has played
shortstop, but Dowell Joseph a guythat they signed who isn't even set eighteen
years old just yet. They havesome real depth at the shortstop position and
a lot of guys that people reallylike, like Colt Emerson is now a
(58:50):
top fifteen prospect according to Kyler McDanieland Kylie Lee McDaniel is one of the
best sources I think that there isout there. Cole Young is a top
fifty prospect, Harry Ford is ina top fifty to seventy five prospect,
Lazara Montes is in the top onehundred consideration. I think vastly underrated,
to be completely honest with you,but they have a lot of young,
talented offensive pieces. Now what theydon't have is pitching. They have two
(59:15):
pitching prospects who compete for the topfifteen. They have a guy named Logan
Ellen's Evans who profiles more as aback end starter. They have Teddy McGraw,
who is a guy who would bein that range but hasn't really been
healthy yet. And then Michael Moralesis a guy that some people like as
well. But none of those guysare going to be able to headline anything
for you, and a lot ofpeople are looking for starting pitching. They're
(59:35):
looking for that next mid rotation orbetter starter. Those guys are probably going
to have to be secondary pieces ina trade, which probably hurts you.
But you have some of the betterupside bats that you can move in this
system to definitely help that offense aswell. So the simple answer is that
they have a lot that they cando if they choose, if they really
want to go out and get aggressive, and you're trading with you, and
(01:00:00):
and it's probably gonna be later asopposed to earlier because of what we just
talked about. There's I mean,by any account, half the league is
still in it right. I mean, it's not really truly still in it.
So if they're good, but ifthey do want to go out there,
it's not just Harry Ford. It'snot just him. There's other guys
that can move out there if theywant to to get to make this team
better for sure. Yeah, Imean that Cole Young and Colt Emerson and
(01:00:23):
even Lazaro Montes are gonna be guysthat can headline deals for the guys who
are probably going to be available. It's just tough right now to know who's
available. For the reasons you justsaid. Everybody's still in it. The
teams that aren't in it are theWhite Sox and the Angels and the Athletics
Rockies, for lack of a betterterm, Rockies certainly qualify actually, now
(01:00:43):
that I think about it, Buthow many of those guys do you really
want? How many guys on thoseteams are really interesting to you to make
the team better. I'd like MichaelKopek to help this bullpen. I'd like
Ryan McMahon as the starting second basementor third baseman for this team, but
that's going to cost you an awfullot, and those other teams are trying
to get those guys as well. It's a really weird situation, and it's
why, all due respect to theseguys, I really wish they would have
(01:01:07):
addressed this more in the offseason.Nate, is there a concern on your
part that this especially with the schedulecoming up. Let's say they take two
of three from the A's and maybethey take two or three. Let's say
they win the next three series.I'm sure they're gonna win the series against
Chicago, right, I mean,that's better, that's a given. I
(01:01:28):
mean, let's you know, allof a sudden, now you're what nine
games up or nine nine games abovefive hundred at that point? What have
you? Is there a concern,Nathan you would have about complacency? Yes,
I don't know why. You wouldn'tthink that the Seattle Marians would get
complacent. I know that Justin Honderhas made some comments recently about them not
(01:01:50):
being complacent and agreeing that they needthings to do. Now. That was
before they fired their offensive coordinator, and as Chris just intimated, is that
a sign of things to come?Or is that just we knew we had
to do something because we have oneof the worst offenses in baseball. So
I certainly hope that it's not asign of stagnation, because I can guarantee
you the one thing that I'm sureof Ian is that the people above the
(01:02:12):
front office are complacent as hell. They're very content with the way all of
this is going. The guys thathave the money, the guys that write
the checks, this is all workingout just fine for them. They're running
a below average payroll and they're sittingin first place. There's not a lot
of motivation for them to want tochange unless John Stanton wakes up one day
and just decides that his lifelong dreamis to win a World Series. And
there's nothing about his actions or ownership'sactions over their life span as owners that
(01:02:35):
would tell us that that is whattheir goal is. So but that's not
that's not a criticism of the playersor even the front office. That's just
why that's a looming fear that Ithink any long term fan of this organization
would right for you, until untilthey prove otherwise. That's that's this,
until they prove otherwise. And athing and a thing on these trades too.
We have two things happened to me. When I try to engage in
(01:02:57):
these conversations, people always come backand say well, who would you have
got and who's gonna who are yougonna get? First of all, it's
not my job to get them.I'm really grateful for simply Seattle sponsorship of
this program. It does not coveras much as Jerry Depoto gets paid to
figure out who he's going to getin trade return. That's his job to
figure it out, it's not mine. And secondly, a big thing that
we want I want to emphasize hereis I want the Marinage to aim large
(01:03:20):
whoever is available, whatever the toptier guys are. This team succeeds at
trading when they target great talent.I don't care who they give up.
I want them to target greatness. They did it with Luis Castillo and it
worked out fantastically. I look atit this way. I'm sitting here at
the Virginia Mason Athletic Center. Igotta say the full name, Virginia Mason
Athletic Center. If imagine if theywould have had a historically great defense,
(01:03:46):
which they did and in twenty twelveand thirteen and fourteen and fifteen, but
they wouldn't have done anything offensively likethey wouldn't have gone out and got Marshaun
Lynch, right, which was Imean, you think about that piece,
that's marsh We're talking about going outand finding a marsha On Lynch. If
they wouldn't have got marsha On Lynch, if they didn't have a quarterback who
(01:04:08):
was at the time an upper tierquarterback in the league, you could have
lot. You could have wasted thathistorically great defense we have. I don't
know if it's historically great, butfor this organization one through five, it's
probably the most talented rotation starting rotationthey've ever had. Sorry, two thousand.
Absolutely, you can't waste that. You just can't waste it. You
(01:04:30):
got to do something to help.I think you owe it to Castile.
You owe it to Kirby and Gilbert, you owe it to Miller and Wu,
and you owe it to Munos andRyan Stannik. I think that just
forgive you lately sending him whatever you'resending him in the mail with your I'm
(01:04:53):
never wrong, I'm just early. All Right, we gotta go. We
gotta wrap things up. Nate, where we'll find you, you can find

Yeah? Who knew it's been awhile it's been a while. Oh,
I have to come back to thestudio tomorrow, don't I damn it.
We can send you somewhere if youreally want. Where can I go?
Where can I go? Ye?Hey, we're taking better. Our
show is brought to you by Snow. Call me casino. SnO casino dot
(01:06:18):
com Seattle's closest casino. Still callme casino. Head back up there.
Uh, let's I want to hitbefore I get to the dumbest thing I
heard this weekend, and and justthe whole Caitlin Clark scenario. On a
second, I mentioned the Justin Jeffersoncontract. One hundred and forty million,
one hundred and ten is guaranteed.I was just thinking, you want to
get two of the two of theif you want to get just kind of
(01:06:41):
into the weeds a little bit there. DK Metcalf, by the way,
still not out here. I mean, I think he just avoids OTAs when
the media is here because he's likeall the time, the sense they show
pictures all the time of DK Metcalfwhen he is, you know, during
the OTA's when the media is nothere. But when he is when we're
here, he hasn't been here heresince. But I was thinking about this
because you know, the Seahws havea lot invested in the wide receiving court,
(01:07:04):
right They got DK Metcalf, TylerLockett, and of course they spent
a first round pick last year onJackson Smith and Jig But yeah, and
I think it's paid off of themso far. I think it has well.
I think it's really paid off.I'm not sure if there's a better
deal out there right now. Isaw this this morning. The NFL on
CBS put something out most touchdowns scoredin the NFL since twenty fifteen. Okay,
(01:07:28):
so in the last ten years, basically the last the most touchdowns scored
in the last well, it wasthe last nine seasons, but most touchdowns
scored Todd. They kind of putthis out there. Todd Gurley's number seven
hasn't played since twenty twenty, whichis amazing. He had seventy nine touchdowns
between twenty fifteen and twenty twenty. But Derek Henry's one, DeVante Adams is
two, Tyreek Kill three, EzekielElliott four, Mike Evans, Christian McCaffrey.
(01:07:51):
But I looked on this list,Tyler Lockett is in the top fifteen.
He's number fourteen. He's got moretouchdowns in that period of time then
James Connor, Amari Cooper, LataviusMurphy, Adam Deelan, and others like
he. Tyler Lockett is a dudethat just never gets recognized. Tyler Lockett
(01:08:14):
is the thirty first highest paid playerin the NFL at wide receiver. And
that's after the restructure, right, that's after the restructure. Dk Metcalf.
Remember people, Oh, they're paidDk Metcalf all this money. He's thirteenth
among NFL wide receivers. I mean, I make the argument they've got a
pretty good bargain on those two guys. Now. I'm sure DK's agents looking
at that right now. Going firstof all, he hadn't put up the
(01:08:36):
numbers, He hasn't had the accolades, the awards that Justin Jefferson has,
So you know, I mean,he's not going to get that kind of
money. But you know, youlook at the guys who are the top
paid receivers in the NFL right now, and DeVante Adams, Justin Jefferson,
Amon ross A Brown, Tyreek Hill, Amari Cooper, A j Brown,
Calvin Ridley, Jaylen Wattle Keenan,Allen, Cooper cupp are the top ten
(01:08:59):
DK A relative bargain at number thirteen. And you know who's a real bargain
is the other guy, Tyler Lockett. But all right, I want to
bring that up real quick. Fourfour on to Mords the excellent let's get
to it. Dumbest thing I heardthis weekend, The I Infernest Show probably
presents ignorance bad Ed's finest until Softyhits the air, a special part of
(01:09:23):
your day where intelligence takes the segmentoff. If it sounds stupid, it
probably is, ladies and gentlemen, the dumbest thing you'll hear today, A
real no brainer. All right.I wanted to play this so on Saturday.
In Saturday morning, it was aten o'clock or nine o'clock start Pacific
(01:09:45):
time, a national game on ESPNWNBA, and it was the Chicago Sky
against the Indiana Fever, which wouldmean it would be Caitlin Clark versus Angel
Reese the two of the and Corroosaactually played made her debut as well and
played that game, so it wasyou know, three of the biggest name
(01:10:06):
rookies in the WNBA played. Itwas another game in which Kaylen Clark.
Now they won their first home gameof the year, did Indiana. She
was just okay shooting the ball, but she was unbelievable passing. She had
a bunch of rebounds. She hada terrific game. She was just named
the w NBA Player of the Month, Rookie of the Month, I should
say for the w NBA. Butin that game, Kennedy Carter basically just
(01:10:30):
smoked her with a better body checkthan I've seen in a long time in
the National Hockey League like and theydid. They did not review it,
which is amazing. The league thenretroactively upgraded it to a flagrant one the
day after that, but the officialsdidn't even they didn't even review it.
They didn't look at it as aflagrant. They called it off the ball,
so she did get one free throw, but then they gave her a
(01:10:53):
flagrant the next day after the game, Kennedy Carter answering or was meeting with
the media, was asked about it. Take a listen currently on the play
before bumping in with Caitlyn. Itseemed like she she turned to you a
little bit after the Clark. Didshe say anything to you? I don't
know what she said. What didyou say to her? I'm not answering
(01:11:14):
any Caitlin Clark question. That gotsut down real fast. And then she
she put this on threads, whichis the Instagram version, right, yeah,
Instagram, Twitter basically yeah, andshe says, and that's that's that
on that because besides three point shooting, what does she bring to the table.
Well, she's number four in theleague in assists. She was just
named the player the Rookie of themonth. But she's number four and assist.
(01:11:38):
If you watched any part of thatgame, and I did because of
wait for it, Caitlin Clark,if you think she's just a three,
the hate for her, I justI don't get it. I just don't
get it. I don't understand it. I don't get it. And I'll
give you just a quick little TVnumber for this weekend in Seattle. All
(01:11:58):
right, it's nine to eleven fifteenin the morning, eighteen plus viewers.
Right, so viewers in our cityeighteen plus, fourteen four hundred people watched
here. It is well, they'renot playing the store. It's well,
and that's more than a Storm gamewould get for a non like Honestly,
it's light years ahead with a nonCaitlin Clark game averages overall any ESPN game.
(01:12:25):
She has brought eyeballs across the countryto that league and I've got you
can I'm gonna play this. Thishas got a lot of outrage today.
This is from the Pat McAfee showtoday. Do you did beep out the
other part? Right? I figuredit out? Yeah? Okay, OK,
thank you. It's somewhat crass, maybe offensive to many, but Pat
(01:12:46):
McAfee, who was at the gameat sitting courtside watching the game, have
this to say. What the WNBAcurrently has is what we like to describe
as a cash cow. There isa superstar. And we're not saying that
the players on the courteneyed act anydifferently. That's the athletes are going to
do what athletes are going to doin any sport. And I think we're
all learning that WNBA that's old schoolfootball as old school football. But I
(01:13:13):
would like the media people that continueto say this rookie class, this rookie
class, this rookie class, notjust call it for what it is.
There's one white bitch for the Indianateam who is a superstar and Is it
because she stayed in Iowa, putan entire state on her back, took
a program from nothing to a multipleyear's success story. Is it because she
(01:13:33):
would go on to break the entirepoints records in the history of the Instagram,
not just the women's record by KelseyPlumb shout out, but also pistol
Pete Maravich's the dude's record as well. Is there a chance that people just
enjoy watching her play basketball because howelectrifying she is, what she did,
what she stood for, how shewent about doing what she went for.
(01:13:54):
Maybe, But instead we have tohear people say that we all like her
because she's white and she's the onlypopular because the rest of the rookie class
is doing what they're doing. Well, that's a bunch of and we think
the WNBA, most specifically their rests, need to stop trying to screw her
over at every single turn. Whatyou have is somebody special and we're lucky
(01:14:14):
she's here in Indiana. I listen, besides the crass white blank that you
know that he used, and Ikept that in there, it's for effect
because I think it was important context. Jess, Well, yeah, because
yeah, he's implying that that's whatpeople think of her. And and the
deal is this, I just gaveyou what the numbers were in Seattle.
People aren't watching for Camon Brink,They're not watching for Angel Reeves, They're
(01:14:35):
not watching for any other player. They're watching Caitlin Clark. And I mentioned
this at the start of the show. She's Michael Jordan, She's Wayne Gretzky.
Not accomplishment wise, not championship wise. But I put Tiger Woods in
that category as well. People watcha sport they normally wouldn't watch or they
(01:14:56):
weren't a fan of, because ofone individual. That's remarkable. That's remarkable,
and it's good for the sport. It's good for the athletes who are
playing the sport. I get thatthere could be underlying resentment, but to
be so brazenly public about some sortof hate, like you can be a
competitor and all that, but thatwas disrespecting a competitor that you were going
(01:15:17):
against, Oh well, that justit's it's it's not understanding. Listen.
You should compete with her. AndI don't have a problem maybe with you
know, getting physical with her andstuff like that after a game, though,
to not acknowledge. Listen, nobodyknows who Kennedy Carter is. Nobody
knows you. I honestly didn't untilnobody knows you. And and you know
(01:15:38):
they only watch your game on Saturdayon ESPN because it was Caitlin Clark playing
against your prize to rookies, oneof you know again, one of whom
celebrated the body check. I don'thave a problem with the hard play,
I've got to I do have aproblem with the officiating. And I think
what McAfee said, and like,I'm not a huge fan of his.
I think, you know, howhe handles it and stuff. I just
(01:15:59):
not a fan, sure, butI thought he absolutely nailed it. People
are watching. Charles Barkley said thesame thing. People are watching the WNBA
at a higher level than ever beforebecause of her, because of how she
plays the game. We talked aboutthis with a lista a lot. Listen,
Charleston, it's not. I wouldhope, God, I hope.
I don't know. Maybe I'm wrong, maybe I'm just blindly naive. I
(01:16:20):
would hope it's not. Because she'sCaucasian. I hope they're watching, and
I believe they're watching. And Iknow I'm watching for this reason. She
shoots the ball from anywhere on thefloor. Her court vision is unbelievable,
unbelievable. It's still a game thata lot of people don't really enjoy watching.
You know, there's miss bunnies, there's misshots, there's just it's not
(01:16:42):
you know, if you're a basketballfan, you love the NBA and you
try to watch the WNBA, youjust may not be a fan. I
get that. But if you watchher play, how she plays, the
vision, the passing, it's elitelevel, male or female, And if
you don't like that, then that'son you. But yeah, the rest
of these players that don't understand thatshe's bringing more eyeballs and more money and
(01:17:05):
more opportunities beat her up on thefloor. The officials have to do a
better job of taking care of her. Her teammates are all just soft as
hell standing around watching understand that sheis the cash call. Like Pat McAfee
said, for this league period, innistory, Okay, take a break.

I think he's just I just don'tthink he's found his groove yet to
(01:25:59):
the point where he needs to.So I gonna go back and listen.
I know Bucky talked about that thismorning Coach Bucky segment. So I need
to go back and listen to whathe had to say. I mean,
that's Bucky would know better than anybody. I means Buckys power baseball, like
that's that's you know. And Juil'snot maybe gonna hit fifty or even I
mean he could flirt with forty, you would think, but he's doing He
plays such great defense, he runsthe bases. Imagine what happens. Yeah,
(01:26:25):
I imagine what happens when he doesget to that point. Right,
So it'll be fine. Mike Morrisis gonna join us in just a couple

let's get to a couple of textsfour nine four or five one on
the Telemorty text line when his gametime time. Okay, let's see two
O six he and I feel hergame Clayton Clark is more Larry Burger magic
(01:26:45):
than is Michael Jordan. I getthe comparison for the sole reason she's lifting
the entire w NBA in another levelthough, Yeah, I'm listen all those
people that I mentioned, you know, Michael Jordan's specifically wining Gretzky, tie
Woods. Those were all champions likemultiple time. I mean Tiger. Obviously,
the resume speaks for itself. Youknow, flirted with Jack Nicholas's record
(01:27:11):
all time for majors. Wayne Gretzkyhas you know, Stanley Cups all time
leading scorer, Michael Jordan six NBAtitles. Is Michael was the goat.
Frankly was just the best. Butwhat I brought up with those names was
this the NHL and golf specifically, and I think even to a certain extent
(01:27:33):
the NBA. Michael took the torchfrom layering in from magic. But all
those players elevated their entire league orsport in the case of golf, That's
what she's done. I just likeI said, the quote I got from
from my numbers guy that does theTV ratings for us, was any Caitlin
(01:27:53):
Clark game is light years ahead ofwhat anything else has ever done on ESPN.
And same thing, the same andthe same thing here. There's you
know, forty thousand people watched thestorm game in Seattle on the Seattle metropolitan
area in our in our TV demo, forty almost I think it's forty five
thousand watched the Caitlin Clark Seattle Stormgame. I mean, it's, you
(01:28:16):
know, light years ahead of whattheir normal games do. She's elevated the
entire league. That's that's without debate, and so it's really kind of remarkable.
All Right, we're talking about theNBA playoffs. Two three Denver Minnesota
was a good series, but therest of the NBA playoffs have a bit
of a snooze fest. It feelsthat way to me. And like I
(01:28:38):
said, I I found myself I'mmore of a hockey guy anyway, So
I watched a lot more Stanley Cupplayoffs. I would readily admit if I
didn't think the Stanley Cup Playoffs weregreat, they worked though they were great.
They were fantastic. I mean thefirst round, first two rounds,
they were close to ninety percent ofthe games were decided by one goal or
a goal in an empty net goal. I watched more than I usually do
this year. They were fantastic, and I think that's that's just they were
(01:29:02):
really really good. Okay, greatMollywop segment today ian excellent comparison. Adding
Lynch to the lob that said,I doubt Jerry d will find similar trade
that Hawks got Lynch of six anda fifth round pick Buffalo got host and
part of it was they wanted toget rid of it, like like Marshawn
had worn out as welcome. AndI know that's weird to believe, right,
Marshaw Lynch wearing out his welcome somewhere, but he had and it was
(01:29:27):
the perfect storm. I mean,it was the perfect storm bringing him here
with Pete Carroll at that time.Letting you know, with this all the
strong personalities in the locker room,he didn't have to meet with the mediator
talk. He just can go outthere and run the football and be Marshawn.
It worked, like it just worked. But my point was is what
they did do is they added astud to a team that needed us,
(01:29:50):
that needed something, like they werestill I mean it was twenty ten when
they added him, it was thefirst year, but they also add him
to what was already being a prettystrong base being built, especially on that
defense. My point is is Ijust I don't I think all of us
would be the same way. Wedon't want to see and it would be
(01:30:12):
awful to see this pitching staff getwasted, right Like, you just don't
want to see that star rotation getwidely on a national level. Being considered
the best in the game. Yeah, exactly. Let's see, should the
mayors try to acquire Baschett in vladjunior? Wonder both what would we have
to give up to get them. That's from the Malliwop segment today. There's
(01:30:32):
a lot of talk about Vladimir Guerrero, like there's a lot of talk about
Yeah, in Toronto's been an underachievingteam this season, and you know,
whether it's him or somebody else,as the guys were saying earlier, they've
got to get something. They've gotto do something. And the numbers don't
lie. Twenty six in a runscore, twenty fourth in tam ops.
(01:30:54):
Yet they're six games above five hundredand they're four games clear in first place
in their division. Part of that'sthe visions isn't good, and part of
that is, but a bigger partof it is the fact that the defense
is just absolutely unbelievable, or thedefense, I keep saying defense. The
pitching staff is just absolutely unbelievable. The starting staff along the way, uh
two four, two five. They'renot adding a big bat. They're gonna
(01:31:16):
speed and defense, which is cheaper. Why pay a ransom for two eighty
five hitters when two twenty are free. I don't know. They it's it's
gonna be the year in which ifthey don't do something, they're they're gonna
get I mean, Jess, youknow this, yep, like you know
this. If they don't do somethingthis year, it's it's not gonna be
(01:31:41):
pretty. Yeah, it is notgoing to be pretty as far as the
as far as the fan base isconcerned, they have not built an offense
with team will Park in mind.We need more players like Bliss, not
all these kkkk. Well Bliss strikesout. Bliss has one hit since he
came up, right, he justget Yeah, yeah, it's bait.
He does get on base, Imean he does get does get on base,
(01:32:03):
so that helps. But yeah,no, I don't I know that.
I know what Nathan always says.He kind of brings up the whole,
uh, the whole John Stanton thingand and ownership likes where the're at.
And I think there is something tothat. Sure, you know,
I think there is something to thefact that that they uh, that they're
(01:32:24):
in that Worldlet's see, I'm justkind of getting updates. Sorry for for
Mike Morris, looks like we're stillwaiting. They're still out there. Why
is practice going so damn long?H Well, I mean he's essentially like
a year two rookie right now.He might be doing extra drills out there.
Oh, I gotta have fun withthis for a second. Okay,
And and and I'm not picking onanybody, so I'm not going to read
(01:32:46):
names. So we have the promorunning right now for EQUC note Thursday,
which which is great, which isoh god, And it's it's kind of
deceiving because it makes it sound likeit's today and you got to text your
(01:33:09):
first and last name in city. And so I'm looking here at the text
line. We got a whole bunchof people texting in their names. If
you're waiting for Softy to call yourname at three o'clock today, just a
pro tip here, he's not goingto do it because it's not wait for
it Thursday. We do appreciate youbeing so enthusiastic, though, but just
do it again on Thursday. Itis not it's not Thursday. That's all.
(01:33:30):
That's all. Let's see great interviewwith George. Thanks go Seahawks.
I mentioned this to to Greg Bellearlier that the fan interview, And I
don't know if you caught this ornot, just sometimes you get like a
tone right, oh your stuff.I think there's a we all are kind
(01:33:53):
of concerned with Abe Lucas and whereAbe Lucas is health wise and how he's
going to be and is gonna beready. He's still not out there to
day watching practice. I got fromthe tone the thought that that it didn't
sound like he was all that concerned, like like because I asked fan about
starting, He's like, no,no, I'm here to back up,
(01:34:13):
I'm here to be a backup swingtackle and all that. Right. Yeah,
that was actually a positive note Itoo from them. Yeah, And
I kind of got from the tonethat he was was telling Greg dat earlier
in cross talk, I said,I got the feeling from talking to him
that that was the case. Youknow that that that that he's not you
know that that's not a massive concernfor them right now in that regard,
so hard to you know, hardto hard to see. We're sarting to
(01:34:34):
see players come in. So hopefullywe'll get Mike Morrise here in just a
couple of seconds. Waiting for himas well. Uh, let's see,
you've got another one here. Iwanted to get to Keith Miller playoffs.

They finished no TA practice and I'mlike, cool' get him here in

And so we've been doing that everyday since since we started working out

(01:41:57):
I was telling the coach. Iwas like, I can't go no more.

So I can't do it. Keepdoing this strange defensive lineman needs to

down, that you would have hada nice role there as well. But
you missed the season. You gethealthy, you come back, you're ready
to go. You're not a rookie, but you are a rookie. Yes,
what's it like year two in thatregard? What do you expect that
of yourself? Right now, I'mtrying to feel out the scheme of things,
(01:43:05):
especially with this defense and not playing, not being in this defense and
not being at my true position whenI played in college under Kochmac. Yeah,
so just trying to find my fitin the defense and being comfortable with
that, and also just not beingtimmed with my shoulder, not playing like
I hope my shoulder doesn't mess upor playing scared. So I think that's
(01:43:27):
one thing that I'm really really focusedon and trying to get my game.
I queeback. Was it frustrating watchingfrom the sideline last year thinking you would
help? Oh? Yeah, that'sfor sure. It was. I don't
know how much of impact I wouldhave made, and I don't want to
say the things would have been sodifferent if I would have played. I
don't want to be that guy,but I feel like I would have made
an impact. I feel like Iwould have helped my team. It hurt
because I got to see some ofmy guys out there, and I just
(01:43:49):
felt like I could have helped alot, and I did it, and
who knows what could have happened, but I feel like I could have helped.
What position are you to walk usthrough this defense? Because it's what
do you want to call it?Last year? A three four all?
But you know what? What isit? This year? And where were
you at? I was at likethree tech Pevy five, and I'm doing
(01:44:10):
the same thing this year. It'skind of a very similar defense. It's
just the scheme is just a lotmore technical. Did you say it's different
than Michigan? Same? Same asMichigan. Same as that fits like a
glove for you. Every time they'retaking notes about players, I'm like,
yep, I know that. Ieven I even do my signals. I'll
even do the signals. So it'sit's it's funny, like Morris, how
(01:44:30):
nice is that? Though? It'sso nice just rolling in here. It's
like, yeah, it's like it'slike an old glove. You're just like
perfect man down he coached Mike.Coach Parker is in the coach hardball every
day and I'm just like, what'sthat? Yo? Tell us about the
new head coach? You had himin college? You have a year without
him? Is he's in Baltimore? But tell what? What? What should
you expect? What do you tellthe teammates? He's a slouch man?
(01:44:55):
I joking, but he's one ofthe greatest coaches I ever I ever had.
Yeah, I would probably say,uh, he's definitely. He definitely
top three. He's definitely top threecoaches I've ever had, just this just
off his IQ and who he hasas a person and how he holds people
accountable, but also is like aplayer's coach in terms of catering to what
they need and putting them in physiciansto succeed with. Is it deep?
(01:45:19):
Like, I guess what's the what'sthe biggest difference between last year and this
year? And I asked this allthe players that have been around, and
I'm not we're not trying to takeshots to the old staff just in terms,
but what are the nuances The differenceis just from a player's standpoint.
Obviously the music's not as loud, but what are the big differences? I
feel like it's a lot more technicalbecause there's a lot of pieces that are
(01:45:40):
moving at once. Because like justwatching Baltimore last year, anybody like not
just like trying to rat on ourown defense and tell you about our defense,
but like Baltimore will show one way, bring pressure the other way.
If you show one way and they'relike okay, they're going the opposite way,
he's gonna like make you play ittrue and rush that way. So
it's it's a lot more technical interms of how the back end looks,
in terms of the rotation to thesafeties, how the mics, how the
(01:46:03):
mics are gonna fit the rotation ofthe nickel, and it's just it's beautiful
with everything is orchestrated perfectly. Butright now we're trying to get that fine
tuned because like it's so intricate,so we need time to find out why
this time of the year is reallyimportant. I feel like that the whole
(01:46:24):
defense is here is very important.Like we have like a couple of guys
missing, but the core is here, and so that's that's what is important
right now. It looks to usand I had George Fanning last week for
the last time we were here forthe media, and we were talking about
this the teaching that Scott huff who'sthe offensive line coach, is doing.
But this is the intricate teaching andall that, and it sounds like you're
(01:46:46):
seeing the same thing on the defense. There's a lot of teaching moments and
like, how far into the installof the defense are you guys right now?
What Mac told us, he waslike, we probably can go and
play a first a first quarter,so you're twenty. I probably say we're
twenty five percent because I feel likewe're not going to really install anything else
(01:47:08):
we haven't seen a lot of thingsare going to look the same but be
called different, and they might bedifferent on the back end, but everything
that we have installed right now iskind of what we're gonna run. Who
are the dudes that are going tojump off the page at people this year
on defense? Who the dudes?Who are the guys defensively that this scheme
this coaching staff is going to elevatetheir game? I hope myself, I
(01:47:33):
probably my number one who out justj Reid for sure. I feel this
defense is kind of built for himin terms of in terms of how how,
what are the words? How highlevel of IQ that this defense takes
to perform at a high level. He has that, so I feel like
(01:47:54):
him he will do amazing in thisdefense. Because I sit beside him in
our team room and he was like, I'm gonna run this defense a Madden
And I was yeah, because likehe sees a lot of things I see
like I definitely just like everything hesays. Anything he says, I'm just
my ears are fully open just listening. I noticed him last year a couple
of times in the locker room aftergames, and there was you know,
(01:48:15):
for whatever reason, there's you know, frustrating losses here or there. I
always saw a guy that's exerted alot of leadership kind of a presence in
there. We've known Jared for along time when he've here before, then
he came back. What's what's helike? Is he the guy? Is
he the dude on that defensive line? Is he your leader? And what
does he do to help guys liketo you and other young guys. I
would think, yeah, I wouldsay he's the leader. But what he
(01:48:38):
does for us is just invites andprovides us that the higher level thinking,
because so he'll be like yes, like ABC, but I want you to
look at this and also see Xy Z, and so that just takes
your that just takes you into awhole nother level. It's like, okay,
(01:48:59):
yes, like look at the formation, look at the set, and
this is what you're gonna get. These are the only place you can get
out of that. So play itand like you know what you're gonna get,
So you shouldn't be timid or scaredof it. So that's what He's
been helping me out so much aboutand also just like helping me get back
and be like Mike, you cando this, Go go go go do
this, do this, do thisjust on my back about a lot of
(01:49:20):
things, and I appreciating for that. How much does this defense rely on
some true depth on that defensive line? Rotations are big and having guys come
in. I mean, you guysstarted losing your out chen is out last
year. I mean the depth wasreally tested for a bunch of the season
last year. How much is thisdefense, like you just said, you're
showing pressure from one side come onthe off the other. Feels like there's
a lot there you need to berotating guys a lot. Yeah, it's
(01:49:43):
it's I mean, shoot, wehad my last two years, I missed
and we had probably like I'm notgonna say ten packages, but I want
to say like ten different packages wherelike different people were all in different spots.
So will there'd be like a MikeMorris package or a or a Chnnity
woes who pass? There does bea ten of package like a like a
Leo package, like just like gettingbig guys out there, and also happened
(01:50:06):
like a two group this case, somebody goes down guy forbid And yeah,
there's like so many there's like wesaw so much that. Yeah, I'm
so excited. I'm so excited thatwe're playing football. Like what's there not
to be excited about it? Whenyou're not in the boat this year,
right, you don't have to goon the boat like last year. No,
man, I'll never trust my teamagain, never Who is the worst
(01:50:26):
guy in the boat? People toknow, you guys took like a little
the Muckleshoote tribe came up here. You guys went out in and went and
you were not happy afterwards. I'mgonna say, Sutherling because you're Canadian too.
He stood up, He stood upon the boat and I'm like,
bro, sit down like it didlike y'all like on Florida. Yes,
we can go in the water andI'll get wet because the water's warm,
right, but it's cold, it'sfreezing. You don't want to be in
(01:50:50):
that water. And plus like Ican't see at the bottom the like I
don't know what's down there. AndI'm a conspiracy theorist, so like what
are you thinking? Like lock thatsmall sure something? There's nothing like that
here, you know where that's thatup in Canada. Speaking to Canadians like
Sutherland, I don't trust it.Yeah, they got ogo pogo up there.
If I can't see it, IfI can't see it, it's it's
(01:51:10):
something down There's something down there. It's something down there killing something down before
you let go. Mike Morris joiningus, Uh, give me a scouting
report on the rookie. Were justtalking about Biern Murphy. Uh. Guy
comes in and I mean it's youwant we watch him like running drills and
stuff there seems to be explosive. If you you've played with and around a
lot of great players, what jumpsoff the page at you? With your
fellow d lineman, I just thinklike like he's just untapped potential mm hmm.
(01:51:36):
Like I feel like he can beeverything everyone compares him to and probably
and in more, I feel likeI'm just I mean, I've seen everything
about him, like the way hecarries himself, like he's not allowed.
He's his ears open, eyes open, just looking at everything, looking at
(01:51:56):
everyone. Coke coke, very coachable. Listen to what Jay Reed says.
Not Leo's here, he can givehim information as well and he's been just
a phenomenal player and just a justa person that a friend, also a
teammate, a brother. Like he'sin terms. I'm not really worried about
him as a swall player because he'sgonna do some amazing things, but as
a person, I feel like he'sa great dude. What's your ceiling?
(01:52:19):
If I'm being very honest, myconfidence needs to come back, and when
it does, I feel it's gonnaget really scary, really scary for a
lot of people. But I'm findingit. And when I find it,
it's gonna be it's gonna be poppingon. I love it force, I
(01:52:39):
appreciate it coming by. Oh thankyou so much
