UCLA Bruins coming into town. That's a five o'clock start, right,

Speaker 2 (00:41):
I just started doing the math and I'm taking Wait

doesn't matter.
Speaker 5 (00:48):
We'll tell you a second.
Speaker 6 (00:49):
We will, we will. I'm looking it up. You worry.
It is at a six six?
Speaker 5 (00:55):
Okay? That makes sense?
Speaker 2 (00:55):
Yeah, because I know the pregame show starts at two
all right, we got a lot of controversy and college.
Well we'll get to that one thirty today. A lot
of people mad, Utah mad, San Jose State mad, everyone
mad cracking if you miss it over the weekend, Friday
night was their last game. They beat the Golden Knights
of Vegas four to three in overtime. Jared McCann cash
in on a little turnover at the blue line and
(01:17):
race the other end breakaway. Thanks for coming, Thanks for
coming for three final, huge win. Take on the Blue
Jackets tomorrow at seven, huge win, y because that was
the first of six at home, and now the schedule
lightens up a little bit. Columbus is here tomorrow. They're
not good, all right, Seahawk's on a bye. You guys
all know that. Sitting at four and five on the season.
They got the Niners in San Francisco on Sunday and
(01:37):
we got Monday Night Football later on tonight, Monday Night Football.
Your friends, the Rams, who are they taking on? I
should know that? Oh Miami, that's right there, you go.
AFC East NFC West matchup.
Speaker 7 (01:50):
Let's get to the show, your home for the NFL
and the twelfth Man proudly sins ross browed cours Light
choose Chill Mondays with the in for now as we
count you down to Monday Night football tonight at five.
Speaker 8 (02:06):
Fifty Coasting for the Touchdown.
Speaker 1 (02:08):
Sports Radio ninety three point three kjr FM, Oh.
Speaker 2 (02:16):
Welcome in on a Monday afternoon Veterans Day. We'll do
a little something good at one fifty or so for
our veterans out there. But thanks everyone for their service.
But we'll do a little tip of the cap for
the local guys here coming up at that point in
time as well. Here's what I want to do. We
got a busy show coming up. Four nine four is
a televerdo text line when it's game time, so Telly time,
(02:36):
I will What I want to do with that is
the following. I would love to have some questions for
Humil and hardcore football at one o'clock today. Now, I
mentioned with Greg a moment ago, we are gonna have
a fun little segment coming up here at twelve twenty today,
we're gonna hear from we just took If you missed
it Friday, it was a bye week. I know people
you know a little bit different normal. We didn't have
(02:58):
a normal Gray Coast sell segment. We had a souped
up on some big time EHG eight steroids or something.
Humillan segment with Greg Cosel on Friday.
Speaker 6 (03:07):
They basically interview each other.
Speaker 5 (03:09):
It was so good. The whole thing's up on the
podcast page, right you go, die Heart right.
Speaker 4 (03:13):
Yeah, it is separate from our show too. Oh yeah,
I just tweeted that out from our iHeart accounts.
Speaker 2 (03:18):
Okay, so you can go find that on the or
you can just score the iHeartRadio app. We might be
listening to it right now on there, and you can
listen to that full hour. It's probably out forty some
odd minutes of Hugh and Greg just going through mid
season at the bye week Seahawks stuff as only those
two guys can. We got a chunk of it. We're
going to replay at twelve twenty and kind of revisit it.
Then we kind of put a bow on everything with
(03:38):
Hugh at one o'clock. Now, if you have a question
for Humillan, we'd love to get it from you. Four nine,
four or five one tell them who text on game
time TLLY time. So if you have a question heard
voice text, it might be fun to throw some of that, Yeah,
if you want to ask if you want to ask
you a question via voice text, you can do that
as well, and we'll throw those at him coming up
at one o'clock, or I'll just do it myself.
Speaker 5 (03:55):
But I'd rather have you, guys, if there's stuff that
you is on.
Speaker 2 (03:57):
Your mind, just kind of bigger picture mid season hardcore
football questions for Hugh regarding your Seattle Seahawks. I do
have a husky question I'm gonna ask him about. Then
I'm gonna get to as well, based on the Mike
Verrell column. I don't want to say Mike was unfair,
but the headline was kind of unfair. But then I
looked at historically the conference that you're in right now
(04:21):
is just really hard. I mean it's really really, really hard.
It got harder with Oregon. So well, I'll ask him
a bigger picture question there as well. So that's all
coming up on the show today. Seahawks losing ground unfortunately
in the NFC West. Yesterday nobody helped us out, and
maybe Miami can tonight. But it's becoming readily and more
(04:45):
and more apparent right now that the Arizona Cardinals are
not going away now. They did beat a really bad
football team in the Jets Jets, Jets Jets. Was that
our one win in Factor of Fiction?
Speaker 4 (04:56):
Yeah, I failed once. I won once. Yeah, but I
bet against my team.
Speaker 6 (05:00):
So I won for the show.
Speaker 5 (05:01):
And I appreciate you because I did not have a
good week.
Speaker 6 (05:06):
You were for three.
Speaker 5 (05:08):
I was for three. It's a show.
Speaker 2 (05:09):
We were one for one and three we had. And
the really bad part is faint and softy. They had
a four and one week.
Speaker 6 (05:16):
Oh no, they opposite it us.
Speaker 2 (05:18):
Yeah, also a four and one week for Greg and Chris,
two and two for the Morning show. So yeah, we
got a My week was bad man, Miami, nice job, Cam.
I should have known better. I was done on my part.
Russ is all of a sudden looking like old Russ. Yeah,
thanks to Mike tom Thanks to Mike Tomlins. So they
beat Washington. We lost that one, and I lost the
(05:39):
Thursday night game with Baltimore and Cincinnati thanks to a
late score Baltimore. Thanks could have Maybe I'll stop them anyway,
So we'll get Factor Fiction at two thirty five today.
But yeah, it's becoming readily apparent now in this conference.
The Cardinals aren't going away. They're sitting there at six
and four. Right now, San Francisco gets Christian McCaffrey back.
(05:59):
I still think that there's something not right with them.
Speaker 9 (06:02):
I don't know what it is.
Speaker 2 (06:03):
Seattle has San Francisco next next Sunday. That's the that's
their game coming off the bye week. Hopefully able Lucas's back.
We'll find out in the next couple of days. He's
his window ends on Wednesday, so it's either either he's
in or he's out for the season one or the other. Yep,
there's no in between now. So but they beat the
Buccaneers twenty three twenty the Lake. Jake Moody field gal
(06:25):
yesterday did forty nine ers after he had missed three
others in the game. They're just not quite the same team,
but they're they're still better than Seattle, at least right now,
at least until Seattle proves otherwise. And the Cardinals, you know, yeah,
you're beating a bad team in the Jets, and that's
like Seattle's other win that you know they're going to
get this season. But those two teams are kind of
(06:46):
starting to scare you a little bit. And then tonight
that the Rams were four and four, they can move
to five and four if they get a home win,
and then all of a sudden, every one of the
conferences above five hundred except for Seattle, and I think
Greg mentioned it last week. Maybe you're only shot is
to get to get into the playoffs. Your only shot
may be frankly, as a division winner, you may not
(07:06):
be able to get in. I mean, the math really
hurts Seattle right now. So it's a massive week. It's
I think it's as close for the Seahawks on Sunday
as to a must win as you're going to get.
You fall to four and six on the season. Yeah,
at this point, if you go to four and six,
I don't know how you overcome that with with your
remaining schedule. Two against Arizona, I guess you could beat
Arizona twice. But Kyler Murray and James Connor and maybe
(07:28):
Harrison they're looking good. They're McBride's fantastic. I mean, they're scary.
Speaker 5 (07:32):
So yeah, a lot to talk about with that as well.
Speaker 2 (07:35):
So that said, football today, I think in the course
of a college football Saturday, it's a very regionalized sport
and if you're in this market, you're probably uber focused
in on what the Huskies were doing or uber focused
(07:56):
on the Koks. Yes, so you get you're probably for
at least you kind of focus in on one game. Well,
at the same time as those two games were ending
and or starting, we had a couple other things taking place.
San Jose State went to Oregon State and won. They
did win, But what happened to the Beaves, Well, they're
(08:17):
not good, No, but I don't think they would be
this not good. Jonathan Smith is really a coach, and
I would say for him, the biggest thing was, Uh,
you know, they lose. They don't have a quarterback necessarily,
they lose Amy Martinez, who's now running down at Miami.
(08:42):
They just lost a lot and they're just they were
kind of fringe anyway. It's it's a bummer.
Speaker 5 (08:46):
But yeah, so that I bring that up for this reason.
Speaker 2 (08:49):
So is that game's taking places as the coups were
getting ready to wrap up and play. Uh, and right
when Washington was kicking off, the Oregon State San Jose
State game was taking place, and that game had a
little bit of controversy. Now, San Jose State wins twenty
four to thirteen, but afterwards, the only thing we heard
(09:13):
from Santaod's coach. I'm probably Butcher's name, Ken Neam Mulu Tulo.
I came you guys know I'm used to coach a name.
Thank you very much.
Speaker 4 (09:23):
What I was told with those names, who is to
start ian and don't stop talking until Neo?
Speaker 6 (09:29):
Now you mess me up Neo time.
Speaker 9 (09:32):
No, he was, he was.
Speaker 2 (09:35):
He was sideways after the game, like absolutely flat out
sideways after the game with the officiating. Then we had
the game later on with the BYU Cougars and the
Utah Utes, and it looked like that game was over
and Utah had pulled off an upset sacking the quarterback
(09:58):
rats left for for BYU at his own goal line
on fourth and ten with just over a minute left
and a late flag for pass interference or defensive holding.
Speaker 5 (10:11):
Yeah, and the contact took place as the quarterback was
being sacked.
Speaker 4 (10:19):
It was one placed back to play.
Speaker 9 (10:22):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (10:22):
It's one of those ones where you just and I
don't even think there was that much contact. I thought
it was more hand fighting. I mean, people are showing
blowing up video now and hearing this well. Utah's athletic
director Mark Harlan went into the postgame press conference and
lost it you got fined forty thousand dollars to say,
we'll play the audio from both coach and ad for
two separate games who are sideways with officiating. And the
(10:44):
fun thing about both of these realignment was brought into
the conversation both times. San Jose State on the outside
looking into the new PAC twelve thinking that they were
out to get him and his team, and Mark Carlin
at Utah saying, man, I thought it'd be great in
the Big twelve, and I want no part of this conference.
Now we'll tell you who the officials were, which is
(11:05):
kind of an ironic twist as well. We'll do that
coming up at one thirty today. Okay, so if you
missed the soundar the weekend, they're both fantastic.
Speaker 6 (11:13):
Just glorious wells of college football.
Speaker 2 (11:15):
Well because you don't usually hear that kind of reaction
because guys will get fined and reprimand and all that.
Speaker 5 (11:20):
But it's it's pretty wrong. We'll get to that coming
to one thirty.
Speaker 2 (11:22):
Okay, questions for humiling talkbacks for humiling, questions for hardcore football.
One o'clock we'll hear the gurus, the two gurus of
all things football, coming up Next to You and Grey
Cosala ninety three point three k TERRFM.
Speaker 1 (11:34):
Now back the frost Proof Coors Light Choose Chill Mondays
with the Infernets on your Home for the twelfth Man
and the NFL Sports Radio ninety three point three kjr FM. A.
Speaker 2 (11:50):
Sometimes we have great interviews and the kind of they
come and go, or great segments, they come and go
and we say, hey, go listen on the podcast and
that's great, and it just kind of goes off and
it never never land and that's kind of what how
And on Friday it's part of radio. Yeah, And I
always wonder about our Friday shows because I look around,
there's nobody here in our office. Is everybody else taking
the day office?
Speaker 4 (12:08):
People have like a hybrid work schedule these days?
Speaker 9 (12:11):
What's going on?
Speaker 5 (12:11):
What's happening here? Anyway?
Speaker 2 (12:13):
We had humil in Greg close Stale Great co Sales,
normal segment. Every Friday, We're brought to buy Seattle Cider
and Greg comes on at one o'clock and we break
down the Seahawks opponent for that weekend. So this week
we'll do it on Friday. I think Dick Fan will
be in for me. He's gonna do that with Greg
on Friday, and they'll talk about San Francisco and Seattle,
the matchup.
Speaker 5 (12:28):
And as Greg can tell you can only tell you
what the film sets. I can only tell you what
the film sets. That's all I can do. But it's
always so good, like it's always so good.
Speaker 2 (12:37):
And Hugh Millin is we all know our hardcore football guy,
and I mean they're both hardcore football people. I have
been talking about this for a while with both of
them separately said I want to get you guys on
do a segment together and end up doing an hour
together on Friday. We're just gonna get a little snippet
of it right here, and just Seahawks are in the
by what do you guys will see? And and we're
(12:59):
gonna a little snippet here questions for you. He's gonna
be with us live at one o'clock today. We've already
got some good tardcore football questions in four And do
we have any talkbacks?
Speaker 6 (13:09):
Yes we do. I haven't had the chance to screen yet.
Speaker 2 (13:11):
And you can ask you a question on the talk
back as well, and we get to all those coming
up today. But here are Hum Millin and Greg Cosell
and we started out by I wanted to point this out.
These two guys aren't new to each other. They talk
a lot on the phone about what else but football.
Speaker 9 (13:30):
Yeah, we do a fair amount and were we uh,
we're also on the thirty third team. It's kind of
a think tank, as it were. And Greg and I Greg,
we met what about twenty five years ago, A long time.
Speaker 4 (13:42):
I was.
Speaker 9 (13:43):
Yeah, I was in the bowels of the U of
the ESPN basement breaking down tape with you, Jaworski and
Merrill Odgs. Yeah, and so so we've been talking for
twenty five years. And I've said it publicly. I don't
want to embarrassed Greg, but of all the people that
I've I've known, Greg is the one guy who didn't
(14:07):
play or coach who has the knowledge equal to somebody
who played or coached. I mean, he has a totally
intricate knowledge of all the schemes. There's nobody else that
I've ever heard as an analyst anywhere, locally, nationally, anywhere
the nose football to uh. As a guy who didn't play,
like Greg, He's the equal to me of any coach
(14:29):
or players. So I've always after that. I think I'm done.
Speaker 2 (14:33):
I'll few you, guys, I might think I might go
one direction all of a sudden, we zig when we zag,
and zag when we zig because I want their knowledge.
I love learning stuff every week. So to our listeners,
I'm gonna start with a very basic topic and we'll
just kind of see where it goes from there. And
uh and Greg, I'll start with you just as we
go in too. This bye week for the Seahawks are
four and five. Just a mid season evaluation of what
(14:55):
you see on tape from the Seattle Seahawks on offense
and on defense.
Speaker 9 (15:00):
Well, let's start with offense. And I think you know.
Speaker 10 (15:03):
One of the things that I think consistently stands out,
and it showed up again in the last game numerous times,
was the O line play. To me, is just not
quite at the level you needed to be to run
a consistent offense, because we've seen games where they've truly
tried to run the ball, because there has to be
some commitment to the run game. When your quarterbacks Gino
(15:23):
Smith and I like Gino and I think you does too,
But essentially he's a pocket quarterback and pocket quarterbacks need
to feel relatively secure. You can certainly talk about this
better than I haven't played the position and been there
and stood there. But Gino's a pocket quarterback and they're
all line both in the run game and in terms
of protection. Has just struggled to the point where there's
(15:46):
limitations to what they can do offensively, and you know,
they can hit some big plays, no question. I mean,
we saw what they did at the end of the
first half, for instance last week against the Rams, where
I think I think Gino had a hundred yards of
his passing on what three plays at the end of
the first half something like that. So they can hit
some big plays here and there. And obviously Metcast been
(16:08):
out the last couple of weeks. But I think the
run game element, to me, is probably one of the
concerning elements because it's not a function of the back.
Kenneth Walker has definite traits to be a lead back
in this league, but I would say that that's that's
been an issue on offense. Defensively, I think you could
go in multiple places here and you know, clearly, I
(16:30):
think you know, with what with the some of the
injuries they've had and players that haven't been able to play,
you know, we just haven't seen enough of Byron Murphy
who's now back, because I loved him coming out of Texas,
and you know, he missed a number of games. You know,
I think that they try to create pressure with their fronts.
(16:53):
You know, they line up with what a lot of
teams do and what we call loaded fronts, with three
three D linemen to one side of the offensive center,
and they stun a lot off that that's what they do.
I think they're looking for edge rushers who can really
become really good players. Hall is sort of moving in
that direction. Jones continues to get significant snaps as an
(17:16):
edge rusher. I don't know if they want him out
there in an ideal world, because I think he could
be really good as kind of a three technique four
I rusher if you had really good edge ruffer rushers. Obviously,
Mafi is a guy they'd like to really become that
guy as well. So I think that, you know, they've
had some issue there and they've lost some really good
players on defense. I really liked Rashawn Jenkins a lot
(17:39):
when they signed him. I thought, within the context of
McDonald's system and Ian we talked about this, he's not
the same player that Kyle Hamilton is. So I don't
want people to think that, but I thought that just
in terms of how he could be deployed in a
make McDonald's system. It could be similar to how he
deployed Kyle Hamilton with the Ravens. But you know he's
been in so we really haven't gotten to see that.
(18:01):
I know I've said a lot, probably too much, so
you guys can jump.
Speaker 9 (18:05):
In, Greg a lot to unpack there. So let's let's
go back to the offensive line. So it's easy for
me to put on my seac hat because I wear
it all the time. I'm a Seattle line, right. I
want you, you and me, we're just having a beer.
You're a Sea ok fan. Okay, so we're talking about
how the hell do we fix this offensive line?
Speaker 2 (18:24):
Let me start with Charles Cross there for a second,
if we can, Greg, because you haven't always been the
biggest fan of Charles Cross, right, Well, you.
Speaker 9 (18:30):
Use back, but I mean, I think I think Charles Cross.
It's not a matter.
Speaker 4 (18:34):
You know.
Speaker 10 (18:34):
It's funny the way you worded that, because you know,
obviously being on Twitter, people think you always have an
agenda when you talk. It's not a matter of being
a biggest fan or not being a biggest fan. I
don't think Charles Cross has consistently played to the level
that they would have hoped given that he was a
top ten pick. Now, he's not a bad player. It's
not as if he needs to be replaced and he's
not going to be right. But I think that you know,
(18:55):
ideally when they drafted Cross and you you feel free
to jump in here. So you're expecting him to be
at the And I hate to say this, but this
is what you're expecting in the same conversations with the Tunsils,
the Williams players of that ILK. Okay, now I know
Trent Williams will be a first ballot Hall of Famer,
but you're expecting Cross. Let's put it this way. I've
(19:15):
spoken to a lot of coaches and the first thing
they tell me when they talk about tackles in this game,
they said, they have to be able to pass, protect
one on one on third down. If you don't feel
they can do that at a high level, then in
this league, they're not high level offensive tackles, particularly on
the left side.
Speaker 5 (19:31):
And that's what we lost. We lost you when you said,
Charles Cross, you and you're left right.
Speaker 9 (19:35):
Yeah, And you know, Greg, what I look at what
Charles Cross that kind of frustrates me is that while
there's oftentimes where he prevents his man from getting a
sack or even a pressure, he retreats too far into
the backfield winn he makes and and you know remember
Howard Mudd having a lot of conversations with legendary offensive
line coach. He was the line coach for Peyton Manning,
(19:57):
as you remember, kept keeping up Pate Manning clean and
he was a big advocate for a jump a jump set,
you know, just like to go laterally and to take
on that combat closer to the line of scrimmag because
you don't want to let a superior athlete get ahead
of steam. Now, not every offensive line adopts to that philosophy.
If you if you miss him, you might be more
likely to the quick pressure. But but I I just
(20:21):
every time I watch Charles Cross and he's in the
lap of Gino Smith, even though he's between Gino Smith
and the defensive end, I just say, you're creating mayhem
for for Gino even though he's not gonna the sack.
So you know that that I presume you're not in
your head that that's one of the beefs you have,
(20:41):
right is where is he taking on that combat? He
may be winning it, but it's too deep and too.
Speaker 10 (20:47):
Close for I think it's funny you say that because
I've had the opportunity the last couple of years to
go to the O line master minds at Frisco, Texas
with Duke Mannyweather, Jeff Schwartz kind of run up. But
there's offensive linemen who players, present players, former players, hall
of famers like Steve Hutchinson's there. I've gotten to know
him really well. And all these guys talk about is
(21:07):
speed to power. You've got to be able to set
your house and control speed to power.
Speaker 9 (21:13):
And I agree with you.
Speaker 10 (21:14):
You played the position so you know when there are
bodies around you, it's just tougher to play. And I
think he does hold up, but he holds up too
close to the quarterback. And I great, that's a problem.
Speaker 9 (21:27):
Yeah, Greg cosel with this, And Greg, let's just stay
on the offensive line for one more so. So now
you're you're wearing that seahawk really well. Looks good on you.
So now let's just say kind of bigger picture because
it's bye week, it's a chance to view things from
thirty thousand feet. What do we think about the Seahawks
(21:48):
prospects for fixing this offensive line? You remember, you know,
Abe Lucas is going to come back the right tackle
and we'll see what's going on there. But you know,
in twenty twenty one, after the Chiefs lost that Super
Bowl to the Buccaneers thirty eight to nine, and Mahomes
was running around and pressured and sacked, and in one
off season, they acquired a Joe Toney that the offensive
(22:11):
left guard from the Patriots. They drafted Creed Humphrey the
center in the second round, and they got lucky with
a sixth rounder and Tray Smith their right gud. Those
guys have been playing now for four straight years in
the middle of a really good offensive line for the Chiefs.
They were able to do the bulk of the work
in one off season. If you're just advising John Snyder
(22:34):
or what do we think here? How fast can we
do it? What's the priority? What do you think needs
to be replaced to get this offensive lineup stuff?
Speaker 10 (22:41):
You know, it's interesting you say that because I don't
think they've not addressed it. For instance, and again It
depends on what you think address means. I mean, obviously,
if you're drafting a guy in the first round, you
think you're addressing it in big time. But they did
draft Bradford out of LSU, and I remember studying him
coming out of LSU, and he was a young who
was very raw in terms of how he played hand usage,
(23:04):
but a big kid with movement. Now he has struggled. Okay,
So do we still think he has a chance? That
That's the question I guess I can't answer. I don't
have you think, like, what's in your gut?
Speaker 4 (23:18):
Now?
Speaker 9 (23:19):
What do you think if you want him to be
a right guard next year or not? Probably not? Okay?
But they also.
Speaker 10 (23:26):
Well, and now Haines is a rookie from Connecticut, another
guy that I really liked his tape, much more so
than Bradford. I really liked Haynes's tape coming out and
for whatever reason, and only the coaching staff could address this.
But he's not starting, so they obviously think Bradford's better.
So I don't know if that means what that means
for Haines. Is Haines just a guy because he played
a Connecticut and not in a power of five school
(23:48):
that needs more time that I can't answer you. But
I mean, I really liked him coming out, and I
think they truly expected him to be a starting guard.
I would assume probably by now in the season. We'll
see what happens after the bye. But I think the
book is out on him. I don't think you can
you can make a definitive judgment just yet on Haines.
Speaker 9 (24:08):
What do you think, Uh, Well, I'm a little biased
because he was my son's roommate in college. So I'm
I got my fingers crossed from I know, let's jump
the left guard. That's an easy one. I know he's
not coming back next year. I'm a little potter Williams
the center. I'm a little bit uh on the on
the on the fence on him because I don't know
(24:28):
how much of his uh inefficiencies has to do with
how late he joined both mentally drying off that knee.
So so I could I could see Connor Williams being
your our center next year here or I could see
a replacement there. I probably need to see more. What
do you think about those?
Speaker 10 (24:47):
I mean, all I can tell you is up to
this point film wise, I don't think he's been good
enough where you could say he's your starting center. Now again,
there's you know, half the season to go. Your point
about him just getting here late is a great point.
Speaker 9 (25:00):
You never know.
Speaker 10 (25:01):
Offensive line, as you well know, is about cohesion, working
together that that can take time. It certainly didn't help,
but they felt it was the best way to go.
That they were rotating Bradford and Haynes until what this
past week or one week prior, I forget exactly, but
that certainly doesn't help when you're looking for cohesion in
your offensive line. Something else I really got drilled into
(25:21):
me when I was at the online Masterminds by the
Steve Hutchinsons of the world that it's all Robbie Tobek.
You probably know him as well. You know all those
guys talking about how it's all about working together, and
you've got to do everything together, and you've got to
play together every snap, snap after snap after snap. So
literally you know these guys better than you know your spouse,
you know, and you know when you're rotating guys, it
(25:43):
doesn't work out that way.
Speaker 9 (25:45):
Well, Greg co sales with us, and we're just chopping
it up like we usually do it and so let's
stay on the offense a little bit here, and look,
I think Kenneth Walker, that's a short discussion. You and
I both agree that dude's elite. If you give him space,
the guy can play. Like is there any is there anything?
I think the only question is is he like you know,
(26:08):
top three in the league, top five types, seven to eight,
like like just kind of you watch a lot of
half backs. Yeah, if you had to just say, I'm
going to hand it, do the rock. He's gonna get yards.
All other things being equal, offensive lines, where do you
think you ranked knut.
Speaker 10 (26:23):
I'm not a great list guy, you, but he's he's
a true feature back in this league. He's not an
issue at all. There's no concerns with him. I think
he can get hard yards and I think he can
take it to the house. So he's not an issue
at all. You're not looking to replace Kenneth Walker.
Speaker 1 (26:39):
You know.
Speaker 10 (26:40):
The question is with backs like that, how many snaps
are they going to play? And how important it is
is it to have a second back. But Kenneth Walker
is your feature back and that's not an issue at all. Okay,
so I know we're gonna finish with geno.
Speaker 5 (26:54):
Actually, he let me do this.
Speaker 9 (26:55):
Let me do this.
Speaker 2 (26:56):
I want because there's one topic I really want to
hit on and I have a few only is going
to take longer than the six minutes I have in
this segment because and that that that's and that topic
I'll just give it's two letters, it's D and K,
and I want to do that in after a break
here in a few minutes.
Speaker 5 (27:11):
Let's just talk geno real quick. You how do you
want to set this up with you? You go ahead
and set it up with Greg.
Speaker 9 (27:16):
Well, look, I think it's good to have Greg's perspective.
I mean, my perspective is one who really really analyzes.
But I think Greg's perspective is phenomenal because he does
a hell of a lot of analyzing the geno just
to the analyze all quarterbacks. But but but okay, now
remember now you're still wearing that Seahawk lid here, Greg,
we do we want him to be the quarterback next year?
(27:40):
I know you're going to say, well, we got to
see another half of the season of football. But for
the purpose of our conversation, do you want Greg? Do
you want him to be that our quarterback next year? Well,
let me.
Speaker 10 (27:53):
Let me answer it this way. I don't think you
need to see more of Gino. You know what he is, Okay.
I don't think there's got a mystery as to what
kind of player Gino Smith is. The question you're asking, though,
is a different question. Because quarterbacks, you as you know,
you've been around great ones. They don't fall out of
the sky. So I know there's a lot of you know,
fan bases in the NFL that always say, oh, well,
you know we need another quarterback. Well, they don't fall
(28:15):
out of the sky. So the question is you can
line up and you can play, and you can win
with Geno Smith. Now, having said that, we're not we're
certainly not putting Gino Smith in the conversation with the Mahomes,
the Allens, the Burrows, the Herbert's, you know, Lamar's. He's
not in that conversation. But he's a certain kind of quarterback.
He's a pocket quarterback. He needs to be protected, he
(28:36):
needs weapons, he needs a multi dimensional offense. But he
can make every throw. He has enough mobility to be
able to move and if needed, run for a first down.
He's certainly not a creator. But I've always believed that
if you can play the position properly from the pocket
and have just enough functional mobility. You don't necessarily need
to be a creator. Now, some of that is a
(28:58):
function of your line, which we've already been through, but
you can line up and play with Gino. He can
throw the ball really well. He's an aggressive thrower. I
like the fact that he that he makes risky throws
because in this league you have to make risky throws
at times. But I don't have a problem with Gino Smith.
Speaker 9 (29:14):
You know, we know what he is.
Speaker 10 (29:15):
I mean, unless you see it differently, you know, unless
you feel you're drafting a guy high that is going
to be a stud. I don't see why Gino Smith
should not be the quarterback. What do you think, Yeah, well,
I think it's gonna be. I think it would be
hard to replace him.
Speaker 9 (29:32):
I think that he is I've said in the offseason, Greg,
I don't know that I've seen a lot of evidence
to change my mind. I think he's just kind of
an average quarterback. Now, average sounds like a pejorative, yeah,
but average is pretty good if you're one of the
teams that are, you know, below average and beyond if
(29:52):
you're if you're Let's say your quarterback is ranked eighteenth
or nineteenth in the league to thirty second. If you're
one of those, you know fan bases with one of
those fourteen quarterbacks, you're loving Gino Smith. I mean, you know,
it really comes down, can you win a Super Bowl
with Gino? Say? Well, yeah, I think you can win
a Super Bowl with just about anybody if you have
a great enough team around you get the greatest show
(30:15):
on turf on offense, and you have the Baltimore Ravens
two thousand defense or the Legion of Boom. A lot
of quarterbacks can win a Super Bowl.
Speaker 5 (30:24):
But can Geno?
Speaker 2 (30:26):
And that's the question right now. The question is can
they even get to the postseason? That's a bigger question.
The entire hour conversation with Hugh and Greg Millan, including
the DK part of the conversation, is all up on
the podcast page you guys, and go check that out.
Fantastic stuff. We'll put a rap on that. We'll talk
to Hugh Live coming up one o'clock. Your questions for you,
We've got a few already four nine, four to five
(30:46):
one talkbacks are there as well, and you can ask
you a question and we'll do a live version of
hardcore football. No game to react to, so we'll look
at bigger picture stuff. Hardcore football is Feu Milut one
Mike Sander at two o'clock and meltdowns from college football
over the weekend at one thirty. Don't want to miss
that all right here at nine three point three km. Well,
(31:10):
a little breaking news from the Seattle Seahawks.
Speaker 11 (31:12):
Just in.
Speaker 4 (31:14):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (31:14):
This is from Brady Henderson ESPN dot com. Another major
shakeup to the Seahawks inside linebacker corps. I'm told they
plan to release Tyrel Dotson. He started all nine games
this season. As Brady points out on X as he
broke this story just a few minutes ago, this move
clears the way for either rookie fourth round pick Tyres
(31:37):
Knight or Drake Thomas to play week side linebacker with
Ernest Jones, who's now playing the mike linebacker position.
Speaker 5 (31:47):
So the Seahawks.
Speaker 2 (31:52):
Try to wrap my arms around this, so they they're
gonna they're going to according to Brady Henderson, again full
credit to Brady ESPN dot com, they are going to
release the player who has started nine games at linebacker
this season, both at mike and it will and that
means that you have. I'm sorry this. I love John Schneider.
(32:16):
This is an indictment on him if he's got to
do this or whatever's going on there. Like the two
linebackers that you signed in the offseason and brought in
here to play and to replace, Bobby Wagner and Jordan
Brooks Dotson and Baker are now both gone. One of
them released, the other one you had to trace a
(32:38):
couple of little bit of commodities for so those guys
are both gone. That is a big, big, big swinging
to miss in the off season by the Seahawk front office.
They don't have many They don't make a lot of mistakes.
I don't think, especially on the defensive side of the ball.
I feel more hits than missus. We'll have to mention
this one to Hugh and see what he thinks. It's
(32:59):
a good time to have hard Harco football might have
just change a little ask questions, But yeah, that's a
significant I think it's one thing. If you're trading a
guy like you trade Baker, you bring in Jones, that's
an upgrade. There's no doubt that's an upgrade. And and
and it's better, and you're going to resign Jones in
the off season, or you would hope to extend him
along the way. But to just flat out release the
(33:19):
guy that started nine games for you this season at
that position is odd. Maybe there's more to it, you know,
as I sit there and say it's an indictment on
John Schneider and the personnel side of things, maybe there's
more to it. Maybe there's something else there, Maybe there's
maybe there's some off field I don't know, I haven't
heard anything.
Speaker 4 (33:36):
But well, I like I like you mentioning that too,
because it's hard to know, right we're not there.
Speaker 5 (33:42):
Well, the good thing is is Mike McDonald does speak today.
He does, so I think it. Do you know what
time's at three? Probably probably three o'clock.
Speaker 6 (33:50):
I'll check it for you.
Speaker 4 (33:51):
Check our friend the bye We kind of throws things
off a little bit, so they're not on their normal schedule.
Speaker 5 (33:56):
Yeah, it's a curious one.
Speaker 2 (33:58):
There is no doubt I'm gonna The one thing we'll
get to with Hugh Seahawk wise hardcore football is I'm
looking at some of the text messages here. I mean,
everyone's asked the same question over and over again, and
it's about the offensive line and what they can do,
and it just feels as if at this point in
the season, outside of when Abe Lucas comes back, they're
(34:19):
kind of in a bad situation. I saw a stat
today and this is it's the polar opposite of what
Seattle has going on, or yeah, polar opposite what Seattle
has going on. The Kansas City Chief three Interior alignment
have not allowed to sack this season. Now they've Pat
Mahomes has been sacked, but it's come from the edge.
(34:42):
That's insane. Meanwhile, Tomlinson, Williams and any combination of Bradford
and Haines, it feels like has been the massive issue
in an issue all season long for Seattle. So I
don't know what they can do better. We'll ask you
if there is anything they can do to fix it.
I know that listening to Hugh earlier with the Morning
(35:05):
Show and then specifically with with Greg earlier, you know
there isn't a coaching element to offensive line into blocking schemes.
And I know there was some some thoughts that maybe
the Huskies didn't react well or do a good enough
job preparing for what Penn State was going to bring
in terms of their pressure so does any of this
fall in the coaching staff as well. But when you
when you're missing like that on the offensive line, and
(35:28):
you just you've you've got one right now, capable player,
and that would be Cross. And I'll and just as
you just listened to Greg and and Hugh talking about
especially Greg Cross, is that he's capable. He's not elite,
not outstanding, He's just okay, gets you byp and everything
else is substandard. I'm not sure what else you can do,
(35:51):
to be honest with you, all right, four nine, four
five one. We'll get to some of the questions from Hugh,
But boy, big one is we got to talk to
him about this.
Speaker 5 (36:02):
We have to talk about this.
Speaker 2 (36:03):
It's Tyrel Dotson, released today after starting all nine games
for the Seahawks this past season. Sounds like Tyree Knight,
the rookie from University of Texas el pass will probably
next man up and maybe they just really like him.
But I just depth is a problem sometimes I just
don't I don't get it. All right, we'll talk about
that with you your questions and then if you missed
it over the weekends. Pissed off coach, pissed off athletic director,
(36:27):
two separate games, both on the West Coast. You hear
that sound coming up at one thirty Factor Fiction two
thirty five niney three point three KFM.
Speaker 1 (36:34):
Good no from the Star Rentals Sports to Jordan ninety
three point three KJRFM Sports Headlines.
Speaker 2 (36:40):
Headlines are brought to you by Frostbrew Coors. I choose
chill all right. Seahawks have made an official announcing just
moments ago that they have released linebacker Tyrrel Dotson.
Speaker 5 (36:49):
He started the first nine games of the season.
Speaker 2 (36:51):
Quarterback Josh Job was signed off the practice squad to
fill the open spot on the fifty three man roster. Also,
tight end Nikhil Harry was signed to the practice squad
as well. More on that with Hugh Millen coming up
in just a couple of moments. Monday, that football tonight,
Miami taking on the Los Angeles Rams so Far Stadium.
Speaker 5 (37:11):
We'll have that game for you here on right here
in KJROW run nine to fifty. Have it here right,
we have it here?
Speaker 6 (37:16):
Yes, thank you Monday and Dolphins double checking out.
Speaker 5 (37:19):
Yes, thank you very much for that.
Speaker 6 (37:20):
You got it on the Coaches Show, you know, Coaches
Show for on nine to fifty.
Speaker 2 (37:24):
Thank you That's what I was checking with him. Now
I see it on the list that you just gave me.
I should probably looked at that well, I.
Speaker 4 (37:28):
Probably should have got It's my fault.
Speaker 5 (37:32):
So on Monday see Kraken back at it. Tomorrow.
Speaker 2 (37:34):
They'll take on Columbus, second of a six game homestand
they knocked off Vegas nice win in overtime, four to
three on Friday. Jared McCann twenty nine seconds in the
overtime score to end the four games slide. With that win,
six thirty pre game show coming up tomorrow. College football
playoff rankings will be updated tomorrow afternoon. We'll see where
Wazoo ends. Update right now, are number nineteen in the
country in the AP poll. Boise State number thirteen in
(37:58):
that poll as well. They were twelve in the college
football playoff poll last week. All right, let's get to it,
Humlin' standing by.
Speaker 1 (38:06):
Your Home for the twelfth Man in the NFL proudly

Now here's you with the inf NEETs on Sports Radio
ninety three point three KJR FM.
Speaker 2 (38:38):
Well, we appreciate the Seahawks giving us a little nugget
to chew on here right before Hugh Millon comes on
for Hardcore Football. And I should point out I want
people still if they didn't miss if they missed it
on Friday, to go back and listen.
Speaker 5 (38:49):
But I will give you a spoiler.
Speaker 2 (38:51):
If you didn't listen on Friday with Greg and Hugh,
there was a conversation in there about one Tyrell Dotson
with the two of you.
Speaker 9 (38:59):
Wasn't there high How are you? I'm well, Dick, I mean,
I'm sorry, I'm sorry. I'm in with a lot of guys.
Speaker 8 (39:04):
Sorry.
Speaker 9 (39:06):
Yeah, yeah, no, I'm brazl trying to think about this
roster shuffling. And uh yeah, we we discussed Tyrol Dotson
and and yeah we were I wouldn't say it's a shock.
We saw this coming.
Speaker 2 (39:19):
But okay, let me let me take a step back
because and and I mean of all the ills on
the team, and I do want to get to the
offensive links. People were asking about that a little bit
after we replayed it a minute ago. But let's just
take a step back of all the things that happened
in the off season, assuming that this is just I mean,
he's still owed.
Speaker 5 (39:38):
Four million dollars.
Speaker 2 (39:40):
There was a five hundred thousand dollars bonus coming, but
I mean that's kind of a pittance in today's NFL.
So I they save a little bit of money maybe,
I guess, I don't know, but but but Hugh, in
this offseason, they went out and they decided to move
on from both Wagner and Brooks. They bring in Baker
and Dotson, and here we are nine nine games into
the season and they've moved on from both those guys.
(40:01):
Is that an indictment on what they did in the
off season on the on the personnel side.
Speaker 9 (40:05):
Yeah, yeah, I mean you tried to evaluate some guys
that you thought you could play with, and there were
only one year contracts that probably should have been an
indicator as to what the league thought of them on
the aggregate, And so you bring them in and and
now halfway through it, you're not here, I look, and
I say, good organizations. They don't waste their time, they
(40:26):
don't mind the ego hit of just saying, hey we missed,
we got to move on. And so that part I like,
Obviously it would have been preferable had they really hit
on somebody. And when you consider the tandem Rokwan Smith
and Patrick Queen the inside linebackers, they were rivaled only
by the forty nine ers tandem of Warner and Greenlaw. Right,
(40:50):
so those best the best off ball linebacker group. And
so I think Mike McDonald has a vision of who
he he wants to have and what that guy looks like.
Maybe he doesn't have an idea about the person. I
think the acquisition to Jones, I think he's likely to
be the Mike backer. But now we're going to see
(41:11):
if if Tyrese Knight is a guy that can fill
that void. But would I would add on this as
you're gathering and soliciting my thoughts about it. I think
this is a really good move in terms of the
statement it makes to the locker room. Because Mike McDonald's,
you know, thirty seven years old, thirty six, thirty seven
(41:32):
years old, looks like he's eighteen comes in replacing Carol.
Does he have the hammer? And I think what this
is going to say is, hey, don't mess around with
this guy. If you're not going to play, He's not
going to just ride it out and replacing the offseason.
He wants results now, and you know, nobody wants the
(41:54):
indignity of being cut now in the case of a tray. Look,
at some point you start to grab that journeyman label,
you know, taking from a guy who was a journeyman,
Like you don't want to keep, you know, tallying up
the teams. Yeah, they're paying you, you're getting paid, but
your stature is diminishing every time you move on. So
(42:16):
what he has done with these two starting linebackers and
said you're not playing to the level I expect and
and so you're gone. And my final thought on it
is is while you're valuing what went wrong, you know,
I think there was a toughness piece for Dodson that
was missing. Oh you know, my my hammi hurts, my
ankle hurts, my my pinky hurts, you know that type
(42:37):
of thing. I think there was a feeling in the
building that he didn't have the requisite toughness needed for
that position.
Speaker 5 (42:45):
What was it? So was that the big thing?
Speaker 2 (42:47):
I mean, because I mean you and Greg both broke
it down that this is that would be a position
moving ahead down the road, maybe not today, you would
move on from I do like what you said there.
I think is important for fans to hear in his
For me as well, they are not an organization that
that will mess around. And maybe it is someone as
(43:07):
you said, kind of you checked the ego at the door. Yeah,
you miss you screwed up, you missed. Whatever it happens,
his personnel decisions, and you instead of waiting and seeing
if it will work out, you just do move on.
That is a trait that this team seems to seems
to have. But Hugh, I mean, I guess that's that.
Can Tyrese Knight play? You watched him a little bit?
Speaker 5 (43:25):
Can he play well?
Speaker 9 (43:27):
I remember studying him well coming out of college. I
studied the Arizona game real well because that was the
toughest competition that he played coming out of that league.
And what I saw was, you know, good sized guy,
good athletic traits, and and he looked a little bit overwhelmed.
Perhaps I don't want to say poorly coached, but under
(43:48):
coach maybe coming out of that school where he just
he did not have good eye discipline, any type of
misdirection that you threw at him. His eyes were were
just everywhere, and his body followed his eyes. So I
think there was a discipline piece that was needed, although
again I think he has good traits. So I think
(44:09):
that what they had with Dodson was a guy that
was making some of those same mistakes and you know,
not in the right gap. I remember the Buffalo game
for example, the Bills are running a play called duo,
which is a strong side play that is meant to
go in the strong side a gap, meaning towards the
(44:29):
tight end. Usually it's run to the two tight end side.
So you're getting down blocking on the strong side and
the running backs read is hey, either I'm going to
go in the A gap on the strong side. Let's
say you go duo, right, you go the read is
your a gap on the strong side or if everything collapsed,
then you bounce it out to the right end.
Speaker 8 (44:47):
Got me?
Speaker 9 (44:48):
So right a gap or right end? Well, Dotson was
getting so far out of position he had the backside
B gap he left totally. Vacan and I think there
was about a twenty seven yard run through the be
gap and then and then there was another one I
(45:08):
think for double digit gain again on that same iso
where you'd never see a running back get to the
backside B gap on that scheme. Yeah, maybe on zone
blocking and some of the other things we talked about
on hardcore football, but that was a pretty egregious error
and he made a number those in terms of his
gap responsibility. And then when he was in the right gap,
(45:28):
the physicality that you would want to see in terms
of violence taking on a block, shedding and playing with mayhem,
he either didn't have that fire or he didn't have
the physicality to really exert himself. There was many times
where I would watch him and I'd say, man, he
seems like a safety, you know, And I'd go back
and I check what they have for his weight, and
(45:50):
you know, they had him I think two thirty two
or something. You know, so the weight, the listed weight
was fine, but the playweight just didn't didn't try to
match up.
Speaker 8 (45:58):
You know that the physicality wasn't there.
Speaker 9 (45:59):
But you know, on Friday with Greg, I think at
one point we said, well, what would be the three
positions if you could take three guys off of both
the offensive defense, starting line, my responsibility both guards on
offense and dots.
Speaker 8 (46:13):
Yeah that was Friday. This is this is Monday, and
here we go.
Speaker 2 (46:16):
And humil in hardcore football, and let's get to that. Beuse,
I do have a husky question to ask you before
we're done here, but I want to.
Speaker 9 (46:23):
I do want to.
Speaker 2 (46:24):
Every text that came in almost was it was either
criticizing John Schneider or it was criticizing the offensive line,
asking what we can do, what you can do about
the offensive lines. Let's just go in general terms offensive
line and maybe you and this is our transparency. He
and I talked off the year today driving in. We
had a good conversation. You mentioned, you know, Washington maybe
not being ready for what Penn State was going to
(46:45):
bring in terms of pressure and things like that. So
coaching does come into play. I weave that into this
following to kind of sum it all up with the Seahawks.
You hopefully get Able Lucas back maybe this week at
right tackle, but you still have the right guard situation.
You still have Williams who seems to not be to
the level you want him to be at center. Tomlinson
(47:05):
certainly not and Cross is just okay. So you just
that's what you have to work with. More than likely
that's not going to change right now dramatically along the way.
You're not You're not trading for Dwayne Brown right now,
right That's not gonna happen. That type of thing's not
gonna happen this year like I did years ago. Is
there anything they can do scheme wise, coaching up wise
or anything, or you just you just got to hope
(47:26):
these guys play a little bit better moving moving guys around.
I mean, like, how would you how would you phrase that?
Speaker 9 (47:32):
Well? I still think for me, the jury's out on
Connor Williams. I know he's coming off that knee, so
there's a physical adjustment, the mental piece. He was inserted
very late, so it's possible. He graded out very high
with the Dolphins a year ago. So I haven't given
up hope on him. I'm not convinced he can be
your twenty twenty five center, but I'm not convinced he cannot.
(47:54):
No doubt Tomlinson's gone, you know, Christen Haynes, I'm a
little surprise that he hasn't made more of an impact
particularly in light of Anthony Bradford's failings, who, in my mind,
is the weakest link on that offensive line.
Speaker 8 (48:09):
The George Lucas, George Lucas, the Abe Lucas situation.
Speaker 9 (48:14):
You know, what do you say?
Speaker 8 (48:15):
I mean, do you hold them accountable? Hey, you knew
he had a bum knee? What happened?
Speaker 9 (48:19):
How did that slip through? There's too many questions unanswered
there in terms of how he's gonna play. He might
go starting against the forty nine ers, play every snap
and play pretty decent, going against Bosa, and then all
of a sudden, well, go, whoa, we got our right
tackle back. So so I think there's some questions at
center and right tackle, your left tackle.
Speaker 8 (48:37):
I would like to see him improve. But but those guards.
Speaker 9 (48:41):
Yeah, I think it's fair criticism levied at John Schneider
because he's been on the record as saying, hey, I
don't really want to pay top of the market for guards,
and he's kind of expressed his philosophy about that. He
thinks you can kind of get by at the you know,
you know, at the Walmart, in the in the closeout
aisle for guards, and it kind of shows.
Speaker 5 (49:04):
Too often humil and joining us right now.
Speaker 2 (49:07):
It's a shorter version, just one segment of hardcore football
today and not as hardcore as normal, as it's no
game to react to, but some things to discuss, There's
no doubt about that. I love having Hugh on every
Monday on the show, been doing it having he on
on Mondays with me since since I started doing the show,
which is like fifteen years ago now, Hugh, I want
to get your thoughts on this, and you can take
it in any direction you want, hardcore or not, whatever
(49:28):
you want to do with it. But it startled me
when I read this, and then I thought, well, yeah,
they're not, but nobody else is either. And I'll explain
the headline in the Seattle Times on Sunday morning, Mike Verrell,
the columnist wrote, and he does my headlines, but the
headline was, as follows Husky show, they're not close to
competing with the Big ten's best, and that was kind
(49:49):
of it. This says they're still far away and all that. Well,
we all think you would expect a step back. Michigan's
had a step back this year after winning the national
championship last year, Washington getting that national t SAMPATIP game,
and there was a step back, there was a coaching change.
But my question to you he was this, because I
think Fish is sit at a bunch of times. Hey,
this is a Big Ten. We got to play physical,
we got to do you know, Big ten football is
(50:10):
different all those things. He's mentioned that on a couple
different occasions in his press conferences. I would I would
pose this to you, Huskies show they're not close to
competing with the Big Ten's best. Well, who the hell
is not named Ohio State, Michigan and now I guess Oregon.
When over the last seven years, every team that's won
the Big Ten is either named Ohio State or Michigan.
The eight years ago was Penn State, then Ohio State,
(50:33):
and a couple of Michigan states. You know, with Mark
d' antonio rolled in, he's not there anymore. It feels
like the Big Ten anyway. It is kind of a
you know, Penn State, Michigan, Ohio State, and Oregon conference anyway.
So who is prepared to compete with the Big Ten?
Speaker 9 (50:48):
That's a great question, Ian and one that the Huskies
are gonna have to see. Do they have the desire,
do they have the appetite to compete in this arena.
And I would just say it can be summarized for
me in three words, more beef. And you know there's
an implication of course in each one of those. You know, yeah,
it's twenty twenty four. You got to buy this, You
(51:09):
got to have people donate to the collective, and if
you want the Huskies to be competitive in the trenches,
you have to buy that beef because they're more scarce
than the little guys.
Speaker 8 (51:18):
And so that was a factor for sure. But I
don't think that's the only story.
Speaker 9 (51:23):
I think, at least from the other night, and I
mentioned it earlier, but you know, Demon Williams, who's about
his athletic as you could ever want a quarterback to be,
you know, short, airy, twitchiness and elusiveness. And he was
pressured on twelve to seventeen dropouts dropbacks rather and of
the twelve, well, there was four where Washington lineman just
(51:46):
got overpowered, either one or more than one, and that
led to the pressure. And of course he had three
sacks and just the seventeen dropbacks. Again back getting back
to Demon Williams in the second half, but eight of
the twelve pressure were characterized by Washington turning either one
or more Penn State rushers totally free, and half the
(52:10):
time they had enough bodies to block them. It was
a very poor scheme, very poor reaction to a blitz
that was not disguised. Penn State just kept coming up
standing up there at the line of scrimmage. Noticeguis whatsoever.
The Huskies, even series after series, couldn't talk about it
between series and get that thing cleaned up. And so
(52:32):
demon Williams is running for his life and he's as
athletic as you get. I thought that absolutely Washington coaches
got pantsed in that aspect. And then you also go
back to the first half, which probably led to a
big part of will Rogers being benched. He throws a
big box fade that's intercepted three yards inside of the numbers.
(52:54):
And what I did in the video portal that I
have access to to twenty seven hundred and forty four
passes by Power four quarterbacks this season paired it down
to get the structure offensively and defensive league that exactly
the same. It's a big box fade, meaning the slot
fade not the widest guy and the widest guy is
(53:14):
not does not have anything vertical which means that the
slot fade can can widen out all right, So that's
a term that coaches you, big box fade. This is
against man and man coverage. It was Cover one free safety.
He's at fifteen yards. So all the elements where I took,
I watched all sixty five completions of slot fades and
then then then kind of filtered it for what the
(53:37):
structure was was similar. Well, there was thirty six times
out of the twenty seven thousand plus total throws, there
was thirty six passes by Power four quarterbacks where the
structure offensively and defensively mirrored what Will Rogers had got
me okay, On all thirty six of those, the wide
receiver took an outside release every single one. Because you're
(54:01):
trying to get with that's the reason why they call
it a big box fade. You're throwing it well out,
you're fading it to the slot receiver, not the widest receiver.
The angles are favorable, I'm to you and uh and
and that's how you get the completion. And and by
the way, they were all completed outside the numbers, or
if they were inside the numbers, there was maybe a
foot or two inside the numbers. This was caught three
(54:22):
yard side the numbers. It was caught way too far
into the middle of the field, and it was uh
predicated in that regard by the release of the receiver.
Speaker 8 (54:32):
So you've got a guy, you know, a veteran receiver.
Speaker 9 (54:34):
Cal a cal transfer and you know, I, I think
we're gonna get that question asked to uh to uh
Jetfish today like, hey, do you do you do you
have a best release? Like you don't care, Like it's
it's whatever he whatever he chooses, or do you have
a preferred outside release? Because if he doesn't say that
he has a preferred out or outside release, then you
(54:56):
and I are going to have a virtual battle with
him on this on this show.
Speaker 8 (55:03):
So was it was hard?
Speaker 5 (55:05):
Was it was a hard like a poor play designer.
Do you think the receiver took the wrong route?
Speaker 9 (55:09):
The receiver took the wrong release at the line. Now,
let me let me say this. I give Will Rogers
a double minus. That was that that came out of
his hand. He's gotta he's gotta process what's happening. Will.
Let me emphasize again, Will Rogers gets a double minus.
But that is that is a minus release. That becomes
an interception, which makes it a double minus for the
(55:32):
receiver to you got double minuses, and it calls directly
into question the coaching of the details that are the
difference between winning and losing. There is no way why
do you think I went on that that easter egg
hunt about that play Because I'm taking forty five years
of watching college in pro football and I'm saying, what
the hell is he doing taking an inside release? So
(55:55):
now we're gonna hang out to dry will oh Man,
What an awful interception it was. That's why he gets
a double But you better tighten it up around him.
I'm I'm I'm outlining places where the whole thing is unraveled,
very poor planning and uh and adjustments around what's happening
with Damon Williams, And I'm outlining the worst play for
(56:18):
Will Rogers. The Olin came in with four interceptions on
the whole year, one point four percent interception rate. That's
in the top twenty best in the country coming into
this game. And one of those interceptions with that fluke
at Iowa, that wasn't his fault, right, So so this
is not a guy who throws a lot of picks.
But he hesitated. I can I watch him hesitate on that,
and he stares down the receiver because he's probably thinking, the.
Speaker 8 (56:39):
Hell are you doing taking an inside release? Does that
make sense? Do you understand why?
Speaker 5 (56:44):
So?
Speaker 9 (56:44):
So here you've got the receivers at the line of scrimmage.
He can if he goes inside, he's getting closer to
the free safety and he can't get without there. But
if he goes outside, what I would teach him? And
you know, I was a passing game ordinator high school.
You say, well, it's just high school, it's all relative.
I'm using the same techniques I learned in the NFL.
(57:06):
I'd say, you attack the inside armpit to freeze him,
and then you've got to close the gap, not too close,
not too far, and then you've got to go outside
of him. And then now your quarterback friendly. Now the
quarterback can take you outside towards the sideline. And as
I said, the big box part of it is the
widest guy on the formation cannot be running anything vertical.
(57:29):
It's got to be shallow under five or six yards,
which is what they had so that in mand a
man that it should be a bright green light. Go
get that big box fade, and when you take an
inside release, two problems happen. The safety can come over
and then the wide receiver is on the inside leverage.
And in Manda man that now the widest receiver or
(57:52):
the excuse me, the that slot receiver run the fade.
He has a defender on outside leverage. So where do
you throw the ball?
Speaker 3 (57:59):
You?
Speaker 8 (58:00):
What are you gonna line drive it inside? Well, here
comes to safety. You're gonna throw it up over the top.
Speaker 9 (58:04):
Well, you can't throw an outside because the defenders on
outside leverage. This is a bad decision. Again, let me
repeat filtered twenty uh. Actually it was fifty three nine
and eighty three passes by all quarterbacks down to power
forwards twenty seven forty four. I could keep filtering go
routes to the slot cover one and uh and within
(58:24):
a big box structure with the uh, the whitest guy,
I'm running a shallow Once you filter that all out,
you got thirty six completions and all thirty six won
an outside release.
Speaker 8 (58:35):
Now am I convincing you?
Speaker 5 (58:37):
Yeah?
Speaker 9 (58:37):
Because if I'm not, I'm not. I'm doing a terrible
job articulating this point. But this is an interception that
get this getting a kid benched, and uh, you know,
maybe you don't care about Will Rogers and him and
you know his future or what have.
Speaker 8 (58:50):
You just care about the Huskies. Okay, that's a reasonable take.
Speaker 9 (58:54):
Well, if you care about the Huskies, then you want
us to be doing, you know, making making layups, not
missing yep, and you take the wrong release at the
line of scrimmage, you're missing layups.
Speaker 5 (59:08):
On top of that, you just said it's a veteran receiver, right,
got the kisch from cal Yeah, I.
Speaker 9 (59:12):
Mean so, hey, Penn States, sorry to interrupt you. Penn
State's offense coordinators in year one two, you know, Drew
Aller had thirty one dropbacks. He had one time where
there was a free runner at him and he just
stood there calmly and he just threw the hot right
in front of him for a completion. The only other
two times you could say, maybe there was a free runner,
(59:34):
the Husky defender came from such depth and so late
that the ball was already gone and it didn't even
influence him.
Speaker 1 (59:40):
You.
Speaker 9 (59:40):
So, basically, the offensive coordinator Penn State in year one
goes thirty one for thirty one keeping his quarterback free
from a free runner, our quarterback who the proclaimed future
of the program. In seventeen dropbacks, he gets eight pressures
(01:00:01):
where guys are totally unblocked. Now let me emphasize that point.
You could take the Husky offensive line. And by the way,
Softy was calling this all summer, he was got like
you got. This is a big concern this offensive line.
And everybody's worried about the offensive line. But you could
have had benji Olsen and Olin Krutz and Chad Ward
and Lincoln Kennedy and Jeff Tayes as the five offensive lineman.
Speaker 8 (01:00:25):
Now why did I mention them?
Speaker 9 (01:00:26):
Because they're all first team All Americans in the in
Husky history, two tackles, two guards in a center that
could have been your line. And if you don't block
a guy and you let him go, you're no better
than a traffic cone.
Speaker 5 (01:00:40):
YEP.
Speaker 9 (01:00:40):
So everybody said, well, we're not big enough, you know,
and and and jeded Fish goes on for you know,
minutes upon. I mean, he gets on with Tony Cash
and Tony's phenomenal, but he goes on Towny shows and
it is long, long, long list of of of complaints
about how we're inexperienced or we're too small or we're
too you know, a guy came from SCS like all
(01:01:01):
this complaining about the status. Well, to me, that just
runs contrary all great coaching, you know, like you say,
well Don James never coached in the era of nil.
Speaker 8 (01:01:11):
True, But you know what other thing.
Speaker 9 (01:01:13):
I know what that man's philosophy was and his philosophers.
You don't freaking whine and provide excuses because your your
team is that's what you're telling your team, no excuses.
Speaker 8 (01:01:22):
So I don't like that piece part of it. But
get back to my point.
Speaker 9 (01:01:27):
Even if they were the best linemen in the history
of Husky football, if they're not blocking anybody and there's
a free runner, it doesn't matter. No, they've got to
be You got to be coached up and have a plan,
and your plan against the blitz is not and by
the way, a blitz that Penn State didn't disguise. Just
line up the long line and say hey, we come,
(01:01:48):
you know, and series after series. If your plan is
just well, let's get a quick, little athletic guy back
there and let him just wiggle around and make people miss.
If that's your plan, that is not a long term plan.
So it's not just that's what it appeared their plan
was Saturday. They got to get better. They got to
get better. Yeah, you players got to get you either
acquire players or develop the players. But I'm not gonna
(01:02:10):
just I'm not gonna give these coaches a free pass.
When I see signs of poor coaching and getting your
ass kicked, getting out coached, I'm gonna say it. I've
always said it, going back to Willingham and everybody.
Speaker 8 (01:02:20):
Else, and uh, you know that. That's I'm just calling
balls and strikes as I see it.
Speaker 5 (01:02:25):
That's that's why, that's why we have you on. That's
why you're expert. I gotta go.
Speaker 2 (01:02:28):
I'm very late, but I think I I think if
you're a Husky fan, I think you you have a
pretty good idea what's going on. And maybe Verrell wasn't
wrong with his uh, with his his headline there. All right,
my friend, I will talk to you next week. We'll
talk about four in our Sero's that's Hugh Millen will

And after the game with BYU in which it looked
like Utah was going to pull off an upset. They
were going to knock off their big time rivals, the
BYU Cougars before a record crowd at Rice Cycles, biggest
crowd they've ever had there late Saturday night, Utah gets
(01:11:28):
a stop on fourth down and ten BYU's quarterbacks sacked
at the goal line and then whoa late flag on
the play defensive.

No, it wasn't.
Speaker 2 (01:11:44):
It wasn't, And I'd make you can even say it's

fighting and all that. Afterwards, before Kyle Whittingham even sat down,
the athletic director Mark Carlin came in and had this
to say.

This game was.

Absolutely stolen from us. We were excited about being in
Big twelve, but tonight I am not sure we won
this game. Someone else stole it from us. Very disappointed.
I will talk to the commissioner.
Speaker 9 (01:12:14):
This was not fair to our team.
Speaker 23 (01:12:17):
I'm disgusted by the professionalism of the officiating crew tonight.
Speaker 2 (01:12:24):
Okay, now, let's let's point out one thing. It's interesting
as he's excited about the Big Twelve and then he's not.
Kevin Marr was a referee Big Twelve referee for that game.
He was a long time twelve official.
Speaker 6 (01:12:43):
So that'll tell you something. I've had him quite a
few times.
Speaker 5 (01:12:47):
He's highly thought of. I don't know. That's like saying
you're tall tall a short person. I don't know.
Speaker 2 (01:12:53):
I mean, it's like a highly thought of Packed twelve
official who knows. There were a lot of things that
happened that game. In defense of the officiating crew in
the Big Twelve, not defense to them. I would point
out to the athletic director, mister Harlan there that it
(01:13:13):
would help if your team would have scored a point
in the second half.
Speaker 5 (01:13:19):
You get shut out in the second half. That had
a little something to do with I still I agree
with him.
Speaker 2 (01:13:24):
Now, what he's insinuating is the following that the conference
was protecting its last unbeaten team. They're going to get
a team in the College Football Playoff. They're a power
for conference, but they were protecting their last unbeaten.
Speaker 6 (01:13:41):
Team, which I can see. I get it. I wouldn't
pay forty thousand dollars to say.
Speaker 2 (01:13:47):
That was what he got fined today by the Big Twelve.
I was happy about the Big twelve.
Speaker 5 (01:13:53):
Now I'm not. Well, you actually didn't want to go
in the first place. But that's fine.
Speaker 4 (01:13:57):
What But okay, I guess I just like it. Not
devil's thatdocating it for any reason in particular. But you
know what does that do to the locker room and
to the athletes on campus side outside of the football team.
I actually think it invigerates that. Well, you're a big guy,
come out there.
Speaker 2 (01:14:12):
Yeah, maybe, but it doesn't get past the fact you
lost to your rival, and that's going to stick with
you forever you can. You know, it's it's when you
lose to arrival. Sometimes you just get beat. Sometimes you
beat yourself. Sometimes the officials may that. You think the
officials came into play. I think two things happened. A
you still had time to get a stop, you didn't.
They ripped off a couple of big plays at three
(01:14:34):
big plays, three explosive plays after that first down was
called and their kicker hit a field goal to win
the game. You also needed a score as a team,
as Utah needed to score in the second half.
Speaker 9 (01:14:45):
They did not.
Speaker 5 (01:14:45):
Their offense is is just pathetic. It's just pitiful.
Speaker 2 (01:14:49):
But I do tend to agree with him. I think
that I think it was a bad call. I think
he got I think they got kind of screwed in
that play.
Speaker 5 (01:14:54):
But that was the one.
Speaker 2 (01:14:55):
The other one was this if you're watching the Wazoo
game on Saturday, because I don't see I didn't see
a lot of the places the CW before they went.
They went college football. Then for like an hour and
a half, some goofy ass NASCAR and race Copias was
all mad. It's a lot of tweets about the very
Fox Sports FS one like Truck Race on the CW.
They started the game on News Nation of all places,
(01:15:18):
that wasn't heavily advertising.
Speaker 5 (01:15:20):
Maybe maybe it's a good demo for Pullman. I don't know.
But anyway, but they started there.
Speaker 2 (01:15:25):
But at halftime, like the the yammer does, they're talking
to San Jose head coach Ken Nia mattole Right, good enough,
close enough, right, we all known former Navy coach and
they won the game. San Jose State did bow eligible.
They won the game twenty four to thirteen. But this
is his post game on field interview with the sideline reporter.
(01:15:46):
Despite winning the game, all coach Ken not happy.
Speaker 24 (01:15:52):
Coach defense really shined in the second half. How were
they able to shut down Oregon sake?
Speaker 25 (01:15:55):
I'll just say this because we're not in the conference.
That was the worst officiating. I said they were trying
to us everybody in the statement and like I said,
trying to cheat us. But like I said, I went out.
Speaker 8 (01:16:05):
In the conference. I'm gonna speak my mind and speak
the truth. That was bad. I've been doing this a
long long time. I've been this professional a long time.
I've never seen anything like that before. That was bad.
Speaker 24 (01:16:16):
Well on the offensive side of the ball.
Speaker 8 (01:16:18):
I got talking about that. I need to talk about officiating.
That was bad.
Speaker 25 (01:16:22):
Okay, it's just I mean that's a less of I mean,
how do you do that to kids? I don't understand that.
I think anybody watching this game is.
Speaker 8 (01:16:31):
Like, man, that was sorry, but happy for your team.
Speaker 24 (01:16:34):
Your team though Bowl eligible. That's big for Santose's say,
with the turnover, with the way this team was picked
to finish in the bottom of the Mountain West, how
proud are you of.
Speaker 25 (01:16:43):
This group's testament to our young man We got great
young men, great assistant coaches.
Speaker 8 (01:16:47):
Sorry about that, but yeah, I'm happy for our guys.
I love our guys, are happy for them. It's an
emotional game.
Speaker 6 (01:16:53):
Coach, no worries. Second Congress.
Speaker 9 (01:16:55):
I don't know who the reporter.
Speaker 5 (01:16:56):
She did a good job.
Speaker 6 (01:16:57):
She did a phenomenal job.
Speaker 4 (01:16:59):
I might I think might be Cameron Irwin because Nigel
was doing our game.
Speaker 6 (01:17:02):
I don't know any other CW reporters.
Speaker 2 (01:17:05):
Need to get but he was sideways. He's referring to
the fact he was reprimanded today by the Mountain West. No,
just a public reprimand like whatever, dude, I love.
Speaker 4 (01:17:15):
That right, right, No, he's not even in your conference anymore.
Speaker 2 (01:17:21):
So he's referring to the fact that San Jose State
did not get an invite from the new PAC twelve. Yes,
and so he's mad about that and he thinks that
they're screwing him over. One of the things you have
to remember with football officials, there's crossover all on the
West Coast. Guys doing PAC twelve games can also do
Mountain West games, vice versa. Same thing in basketball. I listen,
(01:17:42):
I you're you were in you were at USC when
when Gardner got.
Speaker 4 (01:17:48):
Killed Porter Gustin Right, But that was the clearest targeting
I've ever seen it.
Speaker 6 (01:17:53):
That was a one loss that.
Speaker 5 (01:17:54):
Year, and that was and that that cost was the
game that cost was we would have been first.
Speaker 9 (01:18:01):
Rich.
Speaker 2 (01:18:01):
Is it that all of a sudden, wazoos are organizator
wazoos getting a call from a Pack twelve official.
Speaker 5 (01:18:06):
That's wild, That's never happened before.
Speaker 6 (01:18:08):
That's a good point. They didn't seem to like the
Pack twelve.
Speaker 2 (01:18:12):
I think that the issue is this, there's a trickle
down effect the officials in the NFL humill in term
here goat hurters. I eithery're not professionals. They have their
jobs during the week, goat hurting or whatever they may
be doing, practicing along whatever it might be. They're not
good enough at the NFL level. They're not able to
(01:18:34):
keep up with. And Hughes talked about he's done the
whole study on like the twitchiness, eyes, recognition, things like that.
They're too old, they're not good enough to keep up
with the NFL. Well, let's just trickle down. If that's
the case there, what do you think it's gonna be like?
In call it when athletes are bigger, stronger, and faster
than ever before. Incompetence is what it is. It's not
(01:18:55):
an agenda. I don't think it's an agenda on either side.
The Utah BYU thing was bad because you could easily
have met and picked up that flag and said listen, man,
if there was a defensive hold it happened as the
It didn't prevent the quarterback from getting sacked because he
was never going to get that ball away anyway.
Speaker 5 (01:19:15):
Just wasn't gonna happen. It didn't affect the play. Even
if there was and I think it was fifty to fifty,
they could have picked that flight up. They didn't that's incompetence.
That's that felt agenda like right there. That did feel
agenda like right there.
Speaker 2 (01:19:28):
To keep that big the incompetence in the Oregon State
San Jose State game, that's just incompetence. We've been watching
that for years. Gustin hit on minshew and backward passed
and the Apple Cup or whatever else you want to see.
It's just incompetence. So good stuff, though highly entertaining. We'll
take a break, come back. Daily power Play coming up next.
Speaker 9 (01:19:47):
Falcon shoots wanted on gold of Clucks and they stop.
Speaker 8 (01:19:51):

take on the Columbus Blue Jackets right here on the
Kraken Audio Network six point thirty pre game with Michael
Bent and the Captain. Kracking got a win on Friday,
Big one, four to three over Vegas, a really good
hockey team. They snapped a four game winless skid along
the way. They get the two points. Frankly, they played
(01:20:37):
as well as they have all season long against one
of the elite teams in the NHL.
Speaker 5 (01:20:41):
They showed they could play that level.
Speaker 2 (01:20:43):
Joey was greating goal, they had a late lead, Vegas
tied it up with a goaltender polled and Seattle gets
the winner on Jerry mccannal in overtime. As well as
Seattle played, to come out of there with no points
or one point would have been disappointing. At some point
you need a result. At some point, you need to
have a win going the callum, and they had just that.
(01:21:04):
Dan Biles on Friday, you.
Speaker 3 (01:21:05):
Know, I said this a few times, is not the
cleanest game, but I the the game of hockey is
never like the cleanest thing that you're ever going to
see in terms of execution, and you know, there there's
mistakes all over the rink, and so it's probably never
(01:21:27):
going to be the prettiest game or the cleanest game.
But it's also going to present different scenarios and different situations,
different balances, different calls from the referee, different.
Speaker 5 (01:21:40):
You know, different opponents, and you have to.
Speaker 3 (01:21:44):
Be able to stay in the fight and be in
the fight and get in the fight and do it
for you know, through all those bounces and circumstances and
situations and and you know, still be in a position
to win a hockey game. And I thought, you know,
the game against Vegas was was all of that. I
think we you know, we started the game pretty well.
(01:22:07):
We had a three or four chances, have a post.
You think you're doing pretty good, and they get an opportunity,
they get the three on five. You know, you can
argue with the calls, but that sometimes the game presents you.
And we got to kill off two minutes of three
on five, which they scored a goal, and we the
game's got to keep going on. And you know, so
(01:22:29):
I just the way we responded in the game, the
way we played the game for the full sixty minutes
and stayed in the fight, and you know, Tarvo was
able to grab us get us into the game with
a great defensive play and a goal there at the
end of the period. I thought that was huge for
us to kind of keep the mentality that we're in
the game and we're in the fight. And you know,
(01:22:50):
was second period was, you know, in most ways, it
was our best period of the of a year and
a dominate fascist fashion for most of the second period.
So I just the way again, come out in the
third and shortly into the third you score, you score
a goal and get up in the game. And it
(01:23:12):
was just as you look at, the whole thing was
a lot of a lot of good experience for our
guys to have that and do it for sixty minutes,
sixty minutes plus thirty two three seconds, thirty eight seconds
and the result of getting the win.
Speaker 5 (01:23:27):
So they got the win.
Speaker 2 (01:23:28):
They picked up Daniel Sprong, brought him back after a
trade on Friday as well with Vancouver.
Speaker 5 (01:23:32):
Probably won't be until Thursday. He's in the lineup.
Speaker 2 (01:23:34):
Big win last night or Friday night though for the

the weekend it was. Take a tour round. The NFL
is Pick six column is up at the Athletic dot Com.
Actually is up hours and hours ago. You go check
it out. The Athletic dot Com was on the front
page earlier. I think it's just on the NFL front
page right now. Hi, Mike, how are you good? How
are you very good?
Speaker 7 (01:25:47):
Very good?
Speaker 5 (01:25:47):
Quick reaction. The NFL is an interesting beast. It's the league.
Speaker 2 (01:25:51):
It not many leagues cut starters in the middle of
the season the NFL sometimes we'll do that along the ways.
What's an initial read maybe on the dots and released, Yeah,
you know, I I don't know.
Speaker 11 (01:26:02):
I don't.
Speaker 3 (01:26:02):
I don't.
Speaker 19 (01:26:02):
I don't know the reason why they did it, haven't.
I haven't talked to anyone there about it. I'm sure
Mike McDonald will explained some of it. But yeah, he's
just he's a starting player on a defense that hasn't
been very good, hasn't been consistent, so and that's a
position where they've had issues. So this is telling us
unless there's something we don't know behind the scenes that
you know, off the field, or there was some dispute
(01:26:22):
in the locker room. There's always those types of possibilities.
If it's if we're just looking at the performance component
of it, you would say, okay, uh, you know, that
wasn't working. They're trying to get people to do the
thing the way this coach wants to do the scheme
and that's just not being executed. And you know, so
he's out on the team. It's a it's an unusual move,
(01:26:43):
like you said, to happen in the middle of the season.
It does time up a little bit with the buy.
But you know, I don't know if there was more
to it than that behind the scenes to make it
happen now as opposed to some other time, or not
at all.
Speaker 2 (01:26:59):
It's the it's a hand ringing time of the year
here in Week ten of the NFL. Around the league,
teams trying to stay in it, teams try to hold on,
dream teams trying to look ahead to maybe next season.
We'll get to a bunch of teams in a second,
including the ones having great success. I do want to
touch I want to start here with Russ. You wrote
about him today a little bit. It's an interesting thing
(01:27:19):
when you watch as I did yesterday off and on
the red zone. Okay, that's like I'm just watching the
red zone and flies around. It's you know, game here,
game there, Let's go to the red zone there in
the you scoring position. Watching that, I was under the impression,
I said, damn, I bet Russ went nuts yesterday, like
he must have got He must have thrown for like
three bills. I know he had the three touchdowns. I
(01:27:40):
bet his high high completion percentage. I look at his numbers.
He's fourteen for twenty eight, one hundred ninety five yards,
three touchdowns, one interception, but they did win, and he
had the game winning throw to Mike Williams with just
under four minutes left to go, which is a great throw,
great catch.
Speaker 5 (01:27:55):
So what did Wilson do? Is he is Wilson back?
Is it the old russ were or what do we see?
Speaker 4 (01:28:01):
No?
Speaker 19 (01:28:02):
I think he's just an upgrade over justin fields for
just being able to run the offense. He can still
hit that deep ball. So you know, when they give
him opportunities and they're back there, you know, reguarding Mike
Williams and what looks like a Manda Man type of
a coverage, you're you're at risk because he can still
throw it down there. I think, you know, I think
(01:28:24):
he's in a great setting where, Okay, he's on a
team with a top five certainly a top ten defense.
In Seattle, he didn't have that since probably what twenty
seventeen or you had to go back aways, right, So
his last four years or three years in Seattle, when
it was going downhill a little bit, it was harder
to win the games, and there was more on him, right,
(01:28:44):
and so as he went really the team went more.
He's in a context now where they can control the
game with their defense. They can pick their spots, they
can punt if they want to, They can hand off
a bunch of times if they want to. You know,
Najee Harris got twenty one carries. You know, the rutter
back got fourteen. So they're they're running it a lot.
They only averaged I think four point two yards of play,
(01:29:08):
but they convert seven of sixteen times on third down
just i'd say a fish. They control the clock, they
hold the ball for thirty six minutes, only twenty three
for Washington. They just are able to kind of control
the game and he can make his he can pick
his spots, yea, which is you know, hey take a
(01:29:28):
few deep shots and maybe you go fourteen of twenty eight.
Maybe you miss some, but don't you know. I think
the test for him over time will be don't take
those killer sacks, right, that was always a problem that
makes it be diminishing returns. But he gets the ball
out better than you know, better than justin fields does.
I just think it's a good environment with a good defense,
they're going to run the ball, not all on him.
(01:29:51):
Pick your spots, make some plays, make a million point
two a year, not you know, fifty million a year.
Don't want to be the focal point. Just go win
with the team.
Speaker 2 (01:30:02):
Right now, they lead the AFC North by half a game,
seven to two over Baltimore seven and three. Both those
teams would be playoff teams right now. A team that
thought it would be contending for a playoff spot this year,
and a team that thought maybe they were just that
new quarterback away would be Justin Field's old team, the
Chicago Bears. They are now four and five, well back
(01:30:23):
in the NFC North race and kind of like Seattle
a team and the Rams who are playing tonight, kind
of hanging around thinking maybe wildcard. But those teams are
all a couple of games back of Green Bay and
Washington for those final wildcard spots. It sounds like it's
not a good time right now in Chicago for the
Bears and our former oc here in Shane Waldron.
Speaker 19 (01:30:44):
Not only that ian their remaining schedule, there are their
strength of schedule. Their reigning opponents have a seventy one
percent win rate. Mind, they have to play their whole
They have all six NFC North games, I believe left
so right there that you know you're playing Minnesota and
Detroit right.
Speaker 5 (01:31:03):
Six, seven and two, eight and one, Green Bay, Minnesota,
Detroit in that order.
Speaker 19 (01:31:06):
Yeah, and then you also they also have the forty
nine ers who now have McCaffrey back. So they're in
a real bad problem and you know, people wondering what's
going to happen, Well, the season's going to take care
of itself if they if they were to somehow overcome
that schedule, I mean, good for them, that would be amazing.
But it just looks like it's not going to happen.
There's no evidence that's going to happen, and there in
some disarray, and I think sometimes there's a different between
(01:31:27):
just losing, having a three game losing streak.
Speaker 9 (01:31:29):
And how you lose.
Speaker 19 (01:31:30):
Because they're only four and five, I mean that's not
normally it's bad, but there's a lot of worst records
in that. But the hail Mary the end of half
against Arizona giving up a fifty three yard rush, and
people come up with these numbers that you know, Okay,
that's the first time that's happened, and X number of
times those things snowball you have. You know, DJ Moore
walks off the field in the game, was he checking
(01:31:52):
out of the game, Not really, but maybe okay, what
about the defender on the hail Mary who's talking to
the crowd?
Speaker 9 (01:31:58):
Was he is he engaged?
Speaker 19 (01:32:00):
Because Matt Eberfluis have control of the team, like all
of these things just sort of become, you know, exponentially
magnify the story. And so that's where they're at.
Speaker 2 (01:32:11):
Yeah, how much like like when you look at caleble
as you put a graphic out today, I'm just curious,
like first round, first overall quarterbacks that come in and
start right away, what's the success rate for those guys?
Speaker 19 (01:32:25):
Well early on, they don't have a bunch of good numbers.
Wasn't that interestingly that a bunch of guys with passer
ratings in the sixties seventies, you know, maybe low eighties,
a lot of guys with losing records. But I mean
one difference in a negative for them is just the
number of sacks. Thirty eight sacks in the first nine
games of a season is I believe top five, you know,
(01:32:46):
going back to nineteen seventy and sacks are only officials
in TV two, but on profiable reference they've gone back
and counted further. So that is the glaring part of
this where you you know, there's blame to go around,
probably between the offensive line, him holding the ball, the
coordinator Waldron. As you mentioned, that is really the biggest
probably concern.
Speaker 2 (01:33:05):
There's only three, right that had a positive team EPA
per game, Yeah, right, Locke, Newton, and Murray, so like
expecting immediate payoff, and that Joe Burrow didn't. By the way,
people were wondering about that he was minus three point one.
Speaker 19 (01:33:19):
I mean, it's usually come into a bad situation, but
I think the difference for Chicago was they kind of
promised that, Hey, our coach and GM had been here
two years. Right, Hey, the GM was talking about, as
I wrote in the column before the year, this is
the best line depth we've had. Feel great about it.
We cut guys who we would have loved to have keep.
We just had so much depth, you know. So they
(01:33:41):
kind of bought into the idea that they were close,
whereas I think some of those other teams you might
have been a little pleasantly surprised. You know, the Colts
were coming off of some dark days and they got
you know, that's another thing. It wasn't they didn't have
the number one pick in Chicago because they were bad.
Speaker 9 (01:33:57):
They traded for it. Remember that, that's.
Speaker 5 (01:33:59):
Right, That's right.
Speaker 19 (01:34:00):
So it wasn't like a lot of those teams have
a little bit more of a headwind. You had the
number one pick because you were actually the worst team,
and now you're really having to carry it yourself. That
wasn't supposed to be how it That wasn't how it
was sold by Chicago. Hey, what kind of smart we are?
We got the first pick. Again, we didn't use a
high pick before when it would have been Bryce Young.
(01:34:20):
We got this guy, and we've built our team.
Speaker 9 (01:34:22):
Let's go.
Speaker 5 (01:34:23):
I'm looking through here.
Speaker 2 (01:34:24):
So the guys, so this is the guys that the
quarterbacks drafted number one since two thousand and seven, number
one overall and they yeah, since two thousand and they
so in the last twenty four years they started the
team's first nine games as rookies.
Speaker 5 (01:34:37):
I'm just going to read the list for.
Speaker 2 (01:34:38):
The Fancier because I think it's an interesting list of
like success and not Andrew Locke. We'd all agree good
quarterback right just started early. Cam Newton was an MVP.
Speaker 9 (01:34:45):
Good quarterback.
Speaker 2 (01:34:46):
Yeah, say we want Kyler Murray has led his team
this year to let his team to the playoffs before
and right now they're in first place in the NFC West.
He got a contract, whatever, you've got a contract. Yeah,
any success, Jamis Winston not really, not really. Joe Burrow
success since Sam Bradford's.
Speaker 5 (01:35:03):
Success not a success, not a success.
Speaker 2 (01:35:08):
It feels like the just he had success against Seattle,
that was it. Maybe Tay Trevor Lawrence Jury still out.
Speaker 19 (01:35:14):
I would say less success. He got in a second contract,
but disappointing.
Speaker 2 (01:35:18):
Yeah, because he was he was like the most no brainer.
There's just no question. He's the guy franchise quarterback and
he's been anything but that. Caleb Jury's still out obviously,
David Carr No, Bryce Young.
Speaker 5 (01:35:30):
It's early, but he hasn't been great, has been great.
And then everyone's favorite JaMarcus Russell. That needs no explanation
from there.
Speaker 19 (01:35:38):
Not successful.
Speaker 2 (01:35:39):
It's an interesting dynamic man drafting that quarterback number one
and throw him in the right away. Mike sam stand
over us here from the Athletic Theathletic dot com. Do
you think the Chiefs will ever lose? Are they just
gonna win one one four games from now until eternity
or what?
Speaker 9 (01:35:53):
What's up to me?
Speaker 19 (01:35:54):
Was really that was so true for Detroit, like the
two best teams that we thought, yeah, the teams that
you'd be favored to go to the super Bowl from
each conference kind of you know, winning, yes, but they didn't.
They weren't that impressive in doing so. So I'm very
interested this week with the Chiefs playing Buffalo. I think
it's at Buffalo. It's that Buffalo, right, I.
Speaker 8 (01:36:14):
Think it's that Buffy.
Speaker 5 (01:36:15):
Well, i'll tell you right now. I'll have the schedule
at Buffalo.
Speaker 19 (01:36:17):
And you know, the Bills are pretty good team, and
they've been kind of quiet this year, but quietly going
about their business. One of them a game by ten
points yesterday against the Colts. And you know, if you'd
think the Chiefs would lose playing so many close games,
I did a note on that compared to the seven
Patriots and the seventy two Dolphins, the unbeaten teams you
(01:36:38):
know of the Super Bowl era, they've already played like
as many close games as those two teams did combined
in I think thirty total regular season games for the
full season. So they're getting by.
Speaker 9 (01:36:52):
They're good.
Speaker 19 (01:36:53):
You would never bet against them in a single game,
but it's got to catch up to them here at
some point.
Speaker 5 (01:36:57):
Well, it's like, what what hasn't gone on right for them?
Right along the way.
Speaker 2 (01:37:02):
It's just now in Denver's you know, Denver gets a
field goal blocked at the end, and that's for people
that missed it. And they're the guy on the left
side of the line. He's a backup offensive line and
he got blown up and got his footstepped on. It's like,
I love how people are just killing that one guy.
It's like that happens sometimes. Hell, we know about guys
getting ste.
Speaker 9 (01:37:18):
Seen him this year.
Speaker 8 (01:37:19):
Yeah, we've seen some breakthroughs.
Speaker 2 (01:37:21):
Well we had we saw in Seattle with the Giants
game right and and and then happens. I would just
say it's almost like the like the by u Utah thing.
Maybe score in the second half, that gives you a chance. Denver,
he really does score in the second half. Denver did
score in the second half like that, that doesn't give
you much of a chance to win a game.
Speaker 19 (01:37:37):
Yeah, I will say this for the Chiefs though, with
everything going their way, Lose Rashi Rice, right, lose Isaiah Pacheco,
their back who's kind of defines their run games. So
you know they've had a couple of things like that,
but being able to get DeAndre Hopkins that's a nice
you wouldn't say fall your way, but still that's pretty good.
Speaker 2 (01:37:54):
No, no, it is, it is, And you're right that
this week is a I mean that's a heck of
a matchup. I mean, this is the and the Chiefs,
and if nothing else, I always wonder if there's that
I think starting to happen with Seattle, even new new
coaching staff and new players, can't beat the forty nine ers, right,
just can't beat the forty nineers, And Sean mcvay's kind
of had their number as well. If you're the Bills,
how desperate are you to finally be just to beat
(01:38:15):
the Chiefs?
Speaker 8 (01:38:16):
Yeah?
Speaker 19 (01:38:17):
No, it feel great for them, it's going to be.
I felt like Denver's crushed yesterday, Like I felt like
that loss hurt so bad. They were so it meant
a lot to them for where they were at and
for Buffalo. That's what these games have been too. Although
I kind of like where Buffalo is at mentally, I
feel like they can They're not as uptight right now
as they've been. I feel like, you know, Sean McDermott
(01:38:40):
is just a volcano sometimes, but I just haven't felt
that from them this year. I feel like Josh Allen's
been in a good place. Whatever stress he had managing
the Stefon Diggs situation seems gone, and so they got
a Murray Cooper. They just feel a little lighter to me,
like it's not just life and death every week.
Speaker 16 (01:38:57):
So we'll see.
Speaker 19 (01:38:58):
They may lose the game, but I don't know if
it's a meltdown unless some wild thing happens to where
everyone's talking about how the final thirteen seconds of the
playoff game or something like that could be damaging. But
I think they're they're pretty healthy.
Speaker 2 (01:39:12):
Mike, what's your I had two other questions I don't
want to ask you about, and they played each other yesterday.
First of all, what you read on on the Arizona Cardinals.
They're six and four leading the West, and you know,
winning winning games against teams they frankly probably should you
know with like especially with the Jets yesterday. But what's
you read on what you see with that team?
Speaker 19 (01:39:31):
I think that they have they're they're getting an identity
of how they want to play, and so they've done
a pretty good job of having the run game. I
don't think they're very good on defense yet, but they
do kind of hit you like Budda Baker flies around,
make some big plays. I think they're finding their way
with the relationship between Marvin Harrison Junior and Kyler Murray
(01:39:53):
that's come.
Speaker 5 (01:39:53):
Alive a little bit.
Speaker 19 (01:39:54):
And then Murray has the ability to just steal some plays,
right because of his ability to run around. He's going
to convert a third and eighteen, or he's going to
just get away and throw for a first down conversion.
He's going to do a handful of those a game,
and so that could be the difference. I think they're
(01:40:15):
now good enough that they are beating the bad team
sometimes convincingly. Jets Bears, they've beaten them pretty convincingly, and
then they're right in there with some of the other games,
and occasionally they get overwhelmed. Occasionally they get overwhelmed, but
I think they've definitely raised their level and had some
success to get some confidence. Kyler Murray's in a pretty
(01:40:35):
good spot. Seems like he's matured.
Speaker 9 (01:40:37):
Yep.
Speaker 19 (01:40:38):
The fact that he did the sponsorship deal with Call
of Duty after being mocked for not studying his playbook
and playing video games. Was kind of fun, I thought. So,
I think they're in a good spot. They're going in
there by this week, you know, probably get a little healthier.
Seems pretty good.
Speaker 5 (01:40:51):
Seattle then will host them after their bye week.
Speaker 2 (01:40:54):
After Seattle goes to San Francisco this coming week, and
then after that Seattle sees the other team. I want
to ask you about the New York Jets, j E. T.
Speaker 5 (01:41:02):
Jess.
Speaker 2 (01:41:02):
It's your team, right, the j Ets. Just what do
you hear from people around the league about Aaron Rodgers
in that organization?
Speaker 19 (01:41:09):
Well, I mean you at least for a while, thought
they would have some on field success because you knew
that it was a total gamble and not the right
thing to do to, you know, make him the gym
of your team. But I think there was an expectation
that they would be better than they've been. So hopefully
they're done talking about running the table and what they
(01:41:32):
have to do. How about winning a game right, and
try to win a game because they've only won one
game in the last what one, two, three, four or five?
So the last seven games they've won one pretty ugly.
I was thinking about that yesterday. They will get there by,
but down the stretch. What's that going to look like
for them?
Speaker 5 (01:41:48):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (01:41:49):
I just it's you would the thought is this guy
will will himself and that team to a few wins,
and it just hasn't happened.
Speaker 5 (01:41:56):
It's been the opposite.
Speaker 19 (01:41:57):
Yeah, I'm glad. I've got kind of tired of then,
I'm not. You know, they're not fun to watch. No,
what's interesting to me is they fired solid and their
defense is worse.
Speaker 5 (01:42:07):
Yep.
Speaker 9 (01:42:08):
Yeah, so that's kind of notable to me.
Speaker 2 (01:42:11):
