A great question.
Speaker 2 (00:24):
Cracking took care of business last night. Was at that game.
That was fun. That was fun. They beat the Blackhawks
three to one at Climate Pledge Arena. Matty Venier's Jaden Schwartz,
Brandon tannef All found the back of the net. Joey
Decord was his normal good self. Only had to save
nineteen attempts. He saved eighteen of them. The one goal
by Ryan did not. I was like, hey, wait a second.
(00:44):
Didn't he used to play for US?
Speaker 4 (00:45):
Yes he did.
Speaker 5 (00:46):
I thought I was looking at the wrong box score.
Speaker 6 (00:48):
I know.
Speaker 2 (00:48):
So basically Kracking players scored every goal, you know, Ryan

Speaker 5 (02:36):
Call the commission absolute, called the commission.
Speaker 2 (02:39):
Absolutely, you know. I'm Dick Fayn in for Ian. Hi, everybody,
how are you? This is the first twelve o'clock show
I've done in a while, that is for sure.
Speaker 4 (02:46):
Leading up to.
Speaker 2 (02:48):
My man Dave SOFTI Maller will join you at two
o'clock this afternoon for just an odd timed pregame show
for Washington Husky football, a six o'clock kickoff, a game
which I am oddly fired up about.
Speaker 4 (03:03):
I just for some reason, and.
Speaker 2 (03:05):
I think it takes me back to you know, fifteen
years ago, there was a Thursday night game.
Speaker 4 (03:11):
There was a blackout night.
Speaker 2 (03:13):
It was against UCLA and the Huskies were three and
six going into the game, and we knew, Hey, we
can beat the if we can beat Ucla and get
the four and six, and then we can beat Cal
winnable game and get the five and six, and then
if we went the Apple Cup and get the six
(03:33):
and six, were Bowl eligible and bing bang boom, all
three of those things happened. And you know what happened
after that, They beat Nebraska and the Holiday Bowl.
Speaker 5 (03:45):
So oh, the Holiday Ball is up dreams.
Speaker 2 (03:47):
So I mean, and maybe I'm just hearkening back to
those times because that was a time where it was
a rebuilt team under Steve Sarkesian. It was Jake Locker's
last last gasp to try to get to a bowl
game in his career. And I just remember that game
vividly and it was fun. It was a Thursday night,
it was blackout night, and even though the team was
three and six, I still felt fired up for it.
Speaker 4 (04:09):
And they got a big win.
Speaker 2 (04:10):
And even though this team needs one more way they're
five and five, they need one more win to get
the ball eligibility. I'm fired up for it. And I think,
you know, there's a lot of people on on theline
kind of making fun of Husky fans. They are fired
up by Oh, you're excited about making a bowl game. Well,
I mean, yeah, did you read the news what happened
to this program in January? Did you read the news
(04:31):
that they've got a billion new players on their team
that Jedfish wasn't able to recruit. He had to scramble
and get as many guys out of the transfer portal
as he probably could. I mean, it's it's kind of
like making fun of Husky fans that are fired up
making a bowl game this year. Kind of like it's
like making fun of a marathon runner that was in
a car crash and they can't run the next year's
marathon because they were in a car crash.
Speaker 4 (04:51):
Okay, why can't you run the marathon? Well, I was
just in a car crash.
Speaker 2 (04:55):
The Huskies were in the college football version of a
car Their roster was in the college football version of
a car crash.
Speaker 5 (05:04):
After running the college football version of America.
Speaker 2 (05:08):
After finishing second in the college football version of a marathon.
So yeah, I mean, so yes, I'm fired up for
this team as a bowl team.
Speaker 4 (05:15):
I thought they would be seven and five.
Speaker 2 (05:18):
I thought they would go seven and five because I
thought they would beat Wazoo and they were a yard
away from beating Wazoo, and so you're that close, and
you think about what this Husky team has done being
that close in the Wazoo game, and then really in
a game. I don't look back in the Wazoo game.
Speaker 4 (05:37):
And say we should have won that game. I don't.
Speaker 2 (05:39):
I look back as two really evenly matched teams playing
a really tight game that came.
Speaker 4 (05:45):
Down to fourth and one at the one yard line.
Speaker 2 (05:47):
Yeah, and I think I think if you if you
flip flop the schedules and you put the Huskies with
the Cougar schedule this year and the Cougar's with the
Husky schedule this year, you probably find a one lost
Husky team and a five lost Cougar team. But the
Cougars have that schedule and the Huskies have this schedule,
and you got a five loss Husky team and a
one lost Coupe game.
Speaker 4 (06:04):
But they're very, very evenly matched.
Speaker 2 (06:05):
I'm not going to go back and say all the
Huskies were better and they should have won that game.
No tip of the cap to the Kuges. They got
it done. The game they should have won was Rutgers.
I mean, that's the game when you have like five
hundred and fifty yards to two seventy and you lose
the football game and you miss a bunch of field goals.
Speaker 4 (06:21):
I mean that's the game.
Speaker 2 (06:22):
So really this season, and think about how fired up
Jets the Husky Nation would be if they were seven
and three right now, because you're a risker away.
Speaker 4 (06:37):
From seven to three right now.
Speaker 2 (06:38):
But there's a completely different vibe with the team and
a completely different vibe with Jed Fish because they're five
and five and not seven and three, and.
Speaker 4 (06:47):
Those two games.
Speaker 2 (06:47):
Yeah, Jedfish takes responsibility for that fourth and one call.
It was bad before the call was made, it was
bad as the call was being made, and it was
bad after the call was made.
Speaker 4 (07:00):
No, there's no.
Speaker 2 (07:01):
Question that running a short side option with Will Rogers
I not.
Speaker 5 (07:07):
I stand on the short side. It didn't make sense.
It came right at me and I'm like, why are
they coming this? That's where I was. I was in
that corner.
Speaker 4 (07:16):
I was in that end zone.
Speaker 2 (07:18):
I was seated in that end zone with a majority
of my family being at least my wife's family being
Cougar fans.
Speaker 4 (07:24):
So I was, yes, it was It was not true.
Speaker 5 (07:26):
I forgot about the House of pose, it's not fun
for me.
Speaker 2 (07:28):
And and she basically right after that place, she said,
I'm gonna go run on the field now, and I'm like, Okay,
you go have fun.
Speaker 5 (07:35):
Oh god, I got trampled out there.
Speaker 4 (07:37):
Oh you go have fun.
Speaker 6 (07:39):
Okay.
Speaker 3 (07:39):
Can I just interject because coming from the Cougar side,
I'm actually jealous of you guys right now because you
still get to face your pack twelve opponents and this still.
If I was in the Husky position, I would be
excited about this game because you still have brethren within
your conference. We have Oregon State, who I love. There
are bros, we love Beeps. But you guys actually have
(08:02):
this amazing game Friday night lights and Husky Stadium. I'm sorry,
like I can say it, and everybody knows this. It
is one of the most magnificent venues ever to play
college football. You have all of the things. I love Poman,
I love Martin Stadium, Gezefield. It's amazing. But you guys
still get to play people that it had a matter
(08:26):
to you within the conference that doesn't exist anymore, right, and.
Speaker 5 (08:30):
So this is an amazing game.
Speaker 2 (08:31):
And and to your point, I mean, the Huskies not
only beat USC. They're packed twelve brethren, but they also
beat Michigan this year, Yes, and like, I'm sorry, but
I don't think there's a lot of seasons in any
school's history that they beat both USC and Michigan. And
I don't I understand. USC is not great, Michigan's not great.
(08:54):
They still have to beat those teams that get five
star recruits every single year, and they have been. And
that's why I've been kind of more optimistic about the
Husky team than a lot of people is because I
still believe this is a good football team that doesn't
have a good record, and I'm gonna We're gonna find
out tonight. We are gonna find out tonight whether this
is a good football team that doesn't have a good
(09:15):
record or if you know, the wall was kind of
pulled over my eyes and this just isn't really a
good football team. And we're gonna find out. And I
might I might take a big l I might take
two big gills, one on the field tonight if UCLA wins,
and then the other one on on Monday when I
come on the air and be like, Okay, I was wrong,
They're they're not. If you don't beat Ucla at home.
I don't care they've won three games in a row.
(09:36):
If you don't beat Ucla at home when you're on
a nineteen game home winning streak, a team that was
one in five to start the season.
Speaker 4 (09:47):
You're not a good football team. You're just not.
Speaker 2 (09:50):
There is no excuse, no reason not to win this
game tonight against Ucla. The fans hopefully that'll be there,
will be fired up. I will be fired up. I'll
be loud. I saw what type of just no win
environment that was for the Huskies last week at Penn State.
Speaker 4 (10:06):
That was an absolute no win.
Speaker 5 (10:10):
I compared it to day cares about Penn State age.
Speaker 6 (10:12):
Yes.
Speaker 2 (10:13):
I compared it on the on the on the area
yesterday to somebody rock climbing right and you can't have
one little slip or you're coming down the mountain.
Speaker 4 (10:24):
And that environment was.
Speaker 2 (10:27):
They had one little stand basically one little slip early
where they marched down the field the beginning of the game,
We're like, hey, we can move on. These guys, bunk
the field goal and then the next slip the other
the first possession for Penn State, you get your best
secondary member kicked out with a questionable targeting call.
Speaker 4 (10:47):
That was the other slip, and it just went downhill
from there.
Speaker 2 (10:50):
I'm not just saying that if they'd have made the
field goal and Fatteus Dixon wouldn't have been kicked out,
they would have won, No, but I think the tenor
of the game would have been a lot different. And
you've been on the sideline for so many of those
games where you can just feel.
Speaker 4 (11:02):
It, like the energy is palpable, absolutely, and.
Speaker 2 (11:05):
You can feel those games where you're like you get
done with the game, like, yeah, these two teams are
probably only about ten points different, but it was thirty
five to six because it just snowballed and you got
avalanched by the better team in a crazy environment. I
hope the environment's going to be good tonight. All right,
twelve to twelve on ninety three point three KJRFN. We
got a big show for you. Danie O'Neil. Our regular
(11:27):

Speaker 4 (12:31):
All right, Jack Van in for Ian.
Speaker 2 (12:34):
Please to be talking to an old friend, Danny O'Neill.
Brought to you by Northwest Handling Systems. All right, my

Very good, Eric for handling systems. He helps us out.

Speaker 4 (12:55):
How are you, Danny? What's going on?
Speaker 6 (12:58):
I am doing very well, Dick.
Speaker 7 (12:59):
It's great to talk to you.
Speaker 6 (13:00):
I actually I covered Eric. I wrote stories about Eric
when he was a high school swimmer.
Speaker 4 (13:06):
Very good high school swimmer.
Speaker 2 (13:07):
And that's how I actually hooked up with him on
Twitter because his last his.
Speaker 4 (13:11):
First name is E R.
Speaker 2 (13:12):
I K and about I don't know ten years ago,
because you know, I was a swim coach forever and
ten years ago I was like, are you the swimmer
Eric Gordon? He was like, yeah, we just kind of
developed developed a friendship. And he then went on to
swim for Penn State. And I guess he helped you
with your Penn State experience last week and where to go?
Speaker 4 (13:31):
Right he did.
Speaker 6 (13:33):
He gave me an itinerary of things to try, which
included the Exceptional Creamery. I also now owe him a
book because that was our bet on the game.
Speaker 7 (13:42):
U yes, how many points?
Speaker 6 (13:44):
He asked how many points I should give him, and
I said, no, you only bet straight up when you.
Speaker 7 (13:49):
When authors are involved.
Speaker 6 (13:52):
He could have given me all the points and Penn.
Speaker 7 (13:55):
State still would have covered.
Speaker 6 (13:57):
You, because that wasn't all that competitive of a game.
Speaker 2 (13:59):
No, No, it was you did straight up. See I
bet him, I gave him ten or he gave me ten.
So I mean, my goodness, you had more confidence than
the dogs that I did going into that.
Speaker 6 (14:08):
Game, and I don't know I had. I had no confidence, Dick.
I wanted to give him a book.
Speaker 2 (14:13):
Well, I kind of felt like, you know those two obviously,
and you tweeted out correctly. I mean, those two teams
play twenty times, Penn State's winning nineteen of them probably,
but of those twenty times, probably only one is going
to be like that. Because it seemed to me even
watching on TV, and you can tell me if it
felt like it in the in the stadium. It just
(14:36):
felt like one of those no wins situations that if
you slip up one little bit. And the Huskies had
two big ones in the first ten minutes of the game.
They had the missfield goal after marching down on Penn
State's defense in the first drive, and then they had
Thaddeus Dixon getting kicked out on the targeting, and it
just it just felt after those two things happened, I
was just like, this ain't going to be fun this tonight.
Speaker 6 (14:59):
Now with it. It was a tough game, and I
don't read all that much into the way that game
went other than to say it's very clear that Penn
State is at a much different level than Washington is,
and given the amount of offseason attrition that the Huskies had,
both natural coming from guys going to the NFL and
(15:20):
expiring eligibility and with that result of from the coaching change. Look,
that's what a physically dominant team looks like, and that's
the kind of that's the kind of program you want
to be. But I would agree even on that first
drive they got the benefit. Washington got the benefit of
a five yard third down holding penalty against Penn State,
and it was something like twelve plays for.
Speaker 7 (15:42):
Forty six yards.
Speaker 4 (15:43):
It was really hard.
Speaker 6 (15:47):
It was it was just chipping away at a brick wall.
And I think you got you saw a really good
example of the kind of program that Jedfish wants to build,
and you took it on the chin. And now we're
going to see they have a short week coming back.
This is a really important game tonight in terms of
(16:09):
them being able to get to a bull And unfortunately,
UCLA is going to have more than an extra day's
rest because they played on Friday night, and now Washington's
coming back having gotten home really early on Sunday morning.
It's a tough task. UCLA's playing a lot better.
Speaker 2 (16:25):
I mean, I think the bottom line of the Husky
season has been about what was expected. I was telling
just last segment, I thought they'd go seven to five
simply because I thought they would beat Wazoo.
Speaker 4 (16:33):
And they were, you know, one yard away from beating Wazoo.
Speaker 2 (16:36):
So they're not totally off if they can win tonight,
They're not totally off of expectations. But how they've been
doing it has been really surprising to me. I didn't
know what to expect from Belichick on the defensive side,
and he has been He has far exceeded my expectations.
That defense has far exceeded my expectations, particularly in the
back end, and.
Speaker 4 (16:56):
Then on offense.
Speaker 2 (16:57):
I mean, God, if I'd have told you, Danny at
the beginning of the season, you know, Jed Fish is
gonna have Will Rodgers as his quarterback and Joe mc
Coleman and Denzel Boston a wide receiver, and they're gonna
average less yards and less points per game than John
Donovan and Jimmy Lake did three years ago. That would
have stunned me. But that's where we stand right now.
Speaker 6 (17:19):
What's so hard is that and the Seahawks have a
little bit of this too. Now it's the Seahawks' fault
along their offensive line. They have nobody to blame but
that them. Their their team planning and team building. But
watching Washington's offensive line, they they get into some games
where they just haven't been able to be functional. They
(17:43):
would I would include Penn State in that, and certainly
Iowa in the second half where Iowa was just bringing
four guys and consistently getting pressure. I've I've been surprised
that they haven't been able to develop more on offense.
At the same time, I'm man, I've never seen a team.
(18:03):
I don't know if anybody's ever seen a team lose.
They lost really their top six offensive linemen from last year.
It's just it's such a huge chunk, so I have
I'm really hesitant to lay that at the feet of
the offense, if coordinator or the recruiting and certainly at Jedfish.
(18:24):
I am generally pleased with how they've approached this season.
I completely co signed what you said about the defense.
I love the way this defense plays. They're a little
light in the.
Speaker 7 (18:34):
Cakes up front.
Speaker 6 (18:35):
Yea, they get pushed around a little bit, but that
can come with time. I love the way he calls
the defense.
Speaker 7 (18:41):
I love the way that they've played.
Speaker 6 (18:43):
I've been it's disappointing that they lost both the Washington
State and the Rutgers game, because I think in both
of those instances they played, they were competitive enough that
they could have and you could argue should have one
maybe both of those.
Speaker 2 (19:01):
Games, especially Rutgers. I mean they dominated Rutgers. They didn't
dominate the coops, but they dominated Rutgers in that football game.
Speaker 6 (19:07):
Yeah, they just insisted upon blasting their toes off at
every offer exactly.
Speaker 7 (19:13):
And there's there's been, there's been.
Speaker 6 (19:15):
I'll say the Dixon penalty was was one that kind
of goes the the unnecessary roughness against TTL in the
Rutgers game. They've had some really devastating penalties that I
have a hard time saying, like, Oh, that was really
dumb that you did that. It's guys playing hard and
they've they've had some unfortunate penalty. Now, when you block
(19:36):
a field goal, I don't know if you need the
twelfth guy running off the bench doing a little loop
around the official to make sure that we probably could
have lived without that one. But you live and learn.
Speaker 2 (19:46):
Danny O'Neil joining us. Brought to you by Northwest Handling Systems.
Forklist of Palerax conveyors, the loading doc equipment they sell,
rent and service all your warehousing needs. The phone number
four two five two five five zero five hundred. Well
to fi this Husky team, you need money. I think
you have the right guys recruiting these guys, but you
need the money. And we hear from Seattle sports fans
(20:08):
all the time. They direct their ire at John Stanton
and the Mariners. Right, John, you gotta spend the money
to bring in the free agents.
Speaker 4 (20:15):
Okay, Husky fans.
Speaker 2 (20:18):
You're the same people yelling at John Stanton for spending
money and I'm not spending money and not bringing in
the free agents. Are you willing to spend your money?
Because you are quote unquote the owners of the Washington
Husky football team, you have a direct impact on how
many good players will play on this team going forward. Danny,
(20:40):
do you feel that the Washington fan base will put
their money where their mouth is and spend the money
to have a quality Big ten football team over the
next five to ten years.
Speaker 6 (20:52):
Well, let's go through a couple things. I just got
back having last weekend gone over to Penn State where
there are one hundred and ten thousand people in the stands.
So I'm a little I'm a little intimidated, I will,
I will admit to that part. I'm also encouraged because
we've got worlds of warcraft out there tonight.
Speaker 4 (21:13):
Yeah, that's making.
Speaker 6 (21:16):
Good gonna Microsoft getting a little bit of that Microsoft scratch.
But long long term, am I am? I do? I
believe it will happen.
Speaker 7 (21:24):
Yeah, I do.
Speaker 6 (21:25):
I think that Washington has a lot of advantages in
terms of the setting and the the opportunities, the marketing
opportunities they're around here, and and I do think that
if you look at Washington's fan base over the years
that it is I think I think we're as well
equipped as any fan base on the West Coast for
(21:50):
community support of the team. Now, it would be great
if there was an alum of the school that just
started leaking money knee out of his back pocket to
rival that of Fife, But so far that hasn't happened.
But yeah, I do I think that there. I think
that that we will see that and the setting that
Washington has with with the stadium, the fact that it
(22:13):
is in an urban environment, which which sets it apart
from even now a lot of the schools that are
that are in the Big ten. I I am optimistic.
It's just gonna it's gonna take a little it's gonna
we're gonna have to hold our breath here through through
these first few years when you're at a real disadvantage
in terms of the broadcast.
Speaker 2 (22:30):
Yeah, the quantity of money amongst Husky Nation is not
the issue. It is the willingness to spend the quantity
of the money on the Husky football team that that
potentially could be the issue, because you just don't see
the passion here that you do in like a place
like Happy Valley, like you saw last week Danny O'Neil
joining us, transitioning to the Hawks and and maybe comparing
(22:51):
the Huskies of the Hawk.
Speaker 4 (22:52):
Because I've always been on the bandwagon.
Speaker 2 (22:53):
I've been I've been shot down by soft they have
been shot down by others when I've said, you know that,
the Huskies to me have been a more pleasing team
to watch this season than the Seahawks have. The Seahawks
for me, have been very frustrating to watch this year.
Maybe I'm being too hard on them. What team has
met your satisfaction more this year?
Speaker 4 (23:14):
Watching the Dogs are watching the Seahawks.
Speaker 7 (23:17):
Oh, by far.
Speaker 6 (23:18):
I've enjoyed the Husky season a lot more time. More
we got home wins over Michigan and USC. It's a
strange year that you could potentially beat both of those
teams at home and you're still kind of white knuckling
it through to a Bull Bowl eligibility. But that's the
way it's gone. The difficulty with the Seahawks is that
(23:38):
they've changed coaches and they really haven't changed either the
strengths or the weaknesses of their team. The offense, I
think their points are up a little bit this year,
but if you look at some of the advanced measurements,
which I do actually put a lot of stock in,
whether it's DVOA or the EPA for and offense expected
(24:01):
points added, there took below where they were last season
and the defense is still bad. Now, I'm actually really encouraged,
and I think it's great that they turned over middle
linebacker in the middle of the year because it tells
me that they are addressing They're not just assessing problems,
but they're addressing them. And they decided that neither Jerome
(24:22):
Baker nor Tyrel Dodson were long term fits here. They
were both here on one year deals. They went and
got Ernest Jones, they'd let go of Tyrel Dodson, and
they're trying to make this defense better. But so far
it's I feel like I underestimated the learning curve that
was going to exist for this coaching staff, for Mike
(24:42):
McDonald's head coach, for Ryan Grubb is the OC and
everybody's I feel I overestimated how difficult it was because
it's been far more frustrating to watch the Husky.
Speaker 2 (24:51):
And Hugh has preached patients with us. He's come on
multiple times and said the first half season of Mike
McDonald's defense with bold More was like twentieth something like that.
I'm probably missing on the exact ranking, but it was
right around twentieth, and then his second half was basically
best in the NFL. So we did see a massive
(25:14):
improvement from the Buffalo game to the Rams game on
the defensive side. And what I'm really interested in for
this Sunday is, Okay, was that a mirage? Was that
simply because we were going from Buffalo's offense to LA's
offense or was that clearly a defense that is in transition,
that is heading the right direction now? And if we
(25:35):
can see a defense that holds San Francisco in the
low twenties this week, where you actually might be able
to pull off an upset, that might be a sign that, Okay,
maybe we are headed in a different direction in the
second half of the season.
Speaker 6 (25:50):
Yeah. You look at McDonald's history and the way that
people regard his defense, and you know it works if
you have the players, And right now, the question is
how many players do they need to get before they
become I'm not even talking about a great defense, but
a good defense, And would I would say the same thing. Look,
(26:11):
the one thing that people have pointed to is the
success that his Baltimore defense had when they faced sort
of the lineage of the Kyle Shanahan Sean McVay kind
of people from that branch of offensive thinking and the
first half of the schedule, there wasn't much reason to
(26:33):
think that Seattle's defense was ready to be able to
negate the advantages that those offenses have had against them.
I think it's five of the last seven against the Rams,
and they've lost six in a row to the forty
nine ers. If they given the way the defense played
against the Rams, and if you follow that up with
a really strong performance against the Niners team that they've
started to get it going a little bit and they
(26:54):
have Christian McCaffrey back, then I think you can start
to say, like, hey, nobody's run away with Fish Division
if they if they beat the forty nine ers on Sunday,
they're in the conversation. Yes, if they lose to the
forty nine ers, I have a real hard time seeing
them make the playoffs.
Speaker 4 (27:10):
Oh, I agree with that.
Speaker 2 (27:11):
I think if you lose the forty nine ers, you
must sweep the Cardinals just to get back to the
point where you feel like you can be.
Speaker 4 (27:19):
A playoff team.
Speaker 2 (27:20):
Whereas if you lose the Niners, hey, you can still
split with the Cardinals and still be right there, potentially
with a with a nine to eight type playoff team,
but a big, big game this weekend.
Speaker 4 (27:29):
And then on the offensive side of the ball.
Speaker 2 (27:31):
I tweeted this out out today because I've been kind
of in a battle with Softy and some people on
social media as far as how much blame should the
offensive line be taking for what's going on with their offense.
And I looked at the you talked about the advanced metrics.
I looked at the past block win rate from this
year to last year, and it was interesting what I found.
(27:52):
Past block win rate last year fifty three percent. Past
block win rate this year fifty three percent. Past run
block win rate last year sixty seven percent. Run block
win rate this year sixty seven percent. They are winning
exactly the same amount of battles on the offensive line
this year than last year, and yet it seems like
(28:15):
Ryan grub and Gino Smith are kind of being given
more of a pass this year than Ryan Grubb or
than Shane Waldern and Gino Smith were given last year
for basically the same line. So where do you kind
of put that blame Gino slash Ryan Grubbs slash offensive
line on why this offense has been pretty stagnant thus
(28:35):
far this year?
Speaker 6 (28:37):
Yeah, I point a finger at the offense, okay, and
I would say last year, you did have injuries. They
lost their two starting tackles in Week one, and while
they eventually got Charles Cross back, I don't think a
Lucas was ever right and he wasn't able to finish
the year. They've had really unfortunate luck at right tackle.
(29:04):
But the other four spots, those are the dudes that
they came into it with. And not only that, but
they thought they got a little bit better when they
got Connor Williams. When this season started, they were not
preparing to have Connor Williams at center. So I look
at it and I think that Charles Cross has played
pretty well, and I think that every other spot has
(29:24):
been below average, and that's not can't entirely be written
off to injuries, and it can't entirely. I have a
hard time finding a way to criticize Geno Smith for
when he finally does make a bad mistake, like he
did with the interception that was returned for a touchdown.
The reason is because if you put a quarterback under
(29:45):
that much pressure for that long a time, he's gonna
make some He's gonna make mistakes.
Speaker 7 (29:49):
I's going to happen.
Speaker 6 (29:51):
And I feel that their offensive line has been so
just it's been such a liability. They the game earlier
this year where Greub came out afterwards and said, Hey,
you know what, we didn't run it enough.
Speaker 7 (30:06):
I take responsibilities for that.
Speaker 6 (30:09):
My thought when he said it was, well, there was
a reason you weren't running it that much, and it's
because you didn't have confidence in it. And by all
things that we've seen, that's a very valid analysis of
your team. That's a good self scout because you're not
able to run it. And maybe things start to stabilize
now that they're getting Lucas back, and maybe maybe they
(30:31):
do come to some answers upfront at center. But it's
that first half of the season. It's been really hard.
And I would say in the off season they need
to revisit how they look at developing and retaining offensive
lineman because they've been very content to let linemen go
to other teams once they reached the end of their
(30:51):
rookie contracts Damian Lewis at the most recent one, and
the cost of that is continuity. And I think that
this team really suffers for a lack of continuity upfront.
Speaker 4 (31:00):
Hey, great to talk to you, man.
Speaker 2 (31:01):
What are you working on on the Dang Apostrophe newsletter
this week?
Speaker 4 (31:05):
Well, I wrote a little bit today.
Speaker 6 (31:07):
I don't know if you've heard that. Uh, as a
as a member of Generation X, we have a gen
Z YouTuber that might knock out the Boogeyman of our
youth in a Netflix Mike Tyson wrote about that today. Okay, cool,
and I will be summarizing what we learned from the
Seahawks game at the forty nine Ers. That'll be on Monday.
(31:27):
You can subscribe it.
Speaker 4 (31:30):
Gen Z boogie Man. Mike Tyson's got to kick his
ass tonight, Danny.
Speaker 7 (31:35):
Dude, he's fifty eight.
Speaker 4 (31:37):
Years bud, He's still.
Speaker 6 (31:41):
Dude.
Speaker 7 (31:42):
Look, I'm not I hate Jake Paul.
Speaker 6 (31:44):
I can't stand him, but that dude has gotten to
the point where he can he get. He will beat
anyone in a boxing match that's not.
Speaker 4 (31:52):
Like a real boxer. Yeah yeah, that's not.
Speaker 7 (31:54):
An actual boxer.
Speaker 6 (31:56):
And Mike Tyson's fifty eight years old. I kind of
feel like this is a big joke that is being
played on Generation X, where they're like, we're going to
take the most intimidating dominant figure of.
Speaker 7 (32:08):
The time when you were growing up.
Speaker 6 (32:09):
The guy who was the devastating bad guy on Mike
Tyson's punch Out, who could knock you out with one blow,
and we're gonna have him get snuffed out by a
Disney alum YouTuber.
Speaker 5 (32:22):
The hangover.
Speaker 7 (32:24):
Yeah, amiliation, generational humiliation.
Speaker 4 (32:28):
Great stuff, Danny. We'll talk to you soon. All right.
Speaker 6 (32:30):
Thanks, great to talk to you, guys.
Speaker 2 (32:32):
Take care you've had Danny O'Neil brought to you by
Northwest Handling Systems. We got a new show coming up
on ninety three point three KJF.
Speaker 4 (32:41):
Now back to the Washington State Beef Commissions.
Speaker 1 (32:44):
Football Friday with the Infernets on your home for the
NFL Sports Radio ninety three point three kjr FL.
Speaker 2 (32:54):
Thanks to Danie O'Neil for joining us, one of many
contributors to the showday. We've got Greg Cosell coming up
at one o'clock. I'm anxious to talk to Greg about
all things Seahawks Niners.
Speaker 4 (33:08):
Coming up on Sunday.
Speaker 2 (33:09):
Rob rang had a conversation with Ian their regular Friday conversation.
Speaker 4 (33:14):
We'll play that for you at one thirty for those.
Speaker 2 (33:16):
Of you yearning to hear the voice of Ian forness
and why wouldn't you?
Speaker 5 (33:20):
I mean, I think a lot of people are missing
out right now.
Speaker 4 (33:23):
Yeah, hear that, you will hear him with Rob rang.
Speaker 5 (33:26):
They'd be missing out on you.
Speaker 3 (33:27):
That's true if you weren't here, because we have Husky pregames.
Speaker 4 (33:31):
We have Husky pre game at two o'clock.
Speaker 2 (33:32):
Do you think you think the predominantly Koog listenership of
the twelve to two Extravaganza today cares about me being
on or Softy at two o'clock today, or.
Speaker 3 (33:43):
Well, they'll hear Softie at two o'clock, will.
Speaker 5 (33:47):
Yes, they will?
Speaker 6 (33:49):
No.
Speaker 4 (33:49):
I like it.
Speaker 5 (33:50):
I think it's a perfect cross polidation.
Speaker 4 (33:52):
I like how you put that. I like how you
put that.
Speaker 2 (33:54):
So Rob rang with I in at one thirty and
then Leash Stirling, our regular handicapper on the Softian Dick Show.
Speaker 4 (34:00):
So who joins us at three forty five every Friday.
Speaker 2 (34:02):
Well, since we don't have a Softy indig show at
three forty five, we thought on I'm just going to
use him on this show at one five, and we'll
get this case.
Speaker 5 (34:09):
Up and he moves up.
Speaker 4 (34:10):
That's right.
Speaker 2 (34:11):
We'll find out whether he thinks the Huskies will win,
whether the Seahawks will win. A couple of there is
Favorite Picks of the NFL and College Week that'll be
at one forty five. But we've got a new show
coming to ninety three point three KJR. I found out
on the email chain yesterday from the Big Boss, and
everybody chimed in there like this is so exciting. Congratulations Jess.
(34:33):
So like, wait a second, I'm doing a show with
Jess tomorrow. I'm going to ask her all about it.
Speaker 4 (34:37):
So, thank what is going on?
Speaker 2 (34:38):
What is this new show on hosted by Jess McIntyre
on KJR.
Speaker 5 (34:43):
Well, it is called Seattle Voice.
Speaker 3 (34:45):
And this is my favorite part about radio is getting
to connect with the community. I have done various different
things within the community, whether it be one day at
a time or a charitable organization that I volunteer with.
My favorite part, and I think sports intertwines with it.
But you guys, we're in your ear holes. So the
(35:07):
fact that you guys are listening to us right now
means that we can actually impact your lives, hopefully in
a positive way, make you aware of what's going on.
So it will have to do a lot with community.
I'm operating within my own wheelhouse, which sports will be
heavily involved. And I just recorded my first show yesterday
with Kenny Maine and he he is wonderful and the
(35:32):
show will be up. I will tweet out a link
to the podcast after it airs, which will be.
Speaker 5 (35:37):
This Sunday evening, very late at eleven pm.
Speaker 2 (35:42):
So I mean that's okay because we can just all
post it on social media and everybody can just click
a button and they can hear it.
Speaker 5 (35:47):
That's how people listen to things anyway these days.
Speaker 3 (35:50):
Yeah, hopefully no, but it's great. And he has an
organization called Run Freely. Yes, we have talked to him
about that before.
Speaker 4 (35:59):
That is cool.
Speaker 2 (36:00):
But disabled veterans and yes, helping them to get shoes
for it's.
Speaker 3 (36:06):
A device that yeah it's not a brace, it's a device,
but it looks like a brace and it's something that people.
It alleviates pain that people are going through. And the
majority of these devices do go to wounded veterans. And
he does these grassroots. It's so grassroots. He literally fundraises
and calls the guy who makes these devices on the
(36:29):
phone and just says, we have enough money for one more.
Speaker 5 (36:31):
Who's next on the list.
Speaker 4 (36:32):
That's cool.
Speaker 3 (36:33):
It is not this huge overhead operation anything like that.
And I think a lot of people have heard Kenny
in our market and obviously on national platforms, but he
truly cares about it. And that's the kind of thing
that I'll be talking about on Seattle Voice.
Speaker 2 (36:51):
That's great Seattle Voice eleven o'clock Sunday with Jess and
Kenny Maine this week, and she'll be tweeting it out
and we'll be tweeting it out.
Speaker 4 (36:57):
I'll be retweeting it when I saw thank you there,
so they'll be that'll be great, all right.
Speaker 2 (37:01):
Coming up in the one o'clock hour, lots of guests
talking football, Greg Cosell coming up at the top of
the owl, Rob Rang with the end at one thirty
least Sterling your handicapper at one forty five, and the
final hour of the show before Softy takes you from
pregame from Montlake on ninety three point three KJRFM.
Speaker 1 (37:18):
No from the Star Rentals Sports to Us Jordan ninety
three point three KJRFM Sports Headlines.
Speaker 2 (37:24):
Sports headlines, What time is it one o'clock?
Speaker 4 (37:27):
I almost said four? Used to do that.
Speaker 3 (37:29):
I mean, that's the hours on your body exactly.
Speaker 2 (37:33):
My second headline of the day is usually at four,
not at one o'clock. Headlines brought to you by Frost
Brewd Coors, Light Crack and took care of business last
night defeating the Blackhawks three one at Climate Pledge Arena.
Matti Benhers got the first goal, then Jayden Schwartz and
Brandon tanf All found the back of the net. Joey
to Cord eighteen saves on nineteen attempts. There was a
(37:54):
scary play in the game and actually reverberated when when
Jordan Eberley hit the wall, like I felt the ground
move and I wasn't even that close to Jordan Eberley
when he hit the wall, I could like you could
feel that's how hard he hit it.
Speaker 4 (38:11):
A lower body injury and.
Speaker 5 (38:13):
We do have an update update from Mike Benton.
Speaker 4 (38:16):
Good the captain.
Speaker 3 (38:17):
The captain Dan Bilesmas spoke earlier today. Jordan Everley will
not play in either game this weekend against the New
York's Early next week is a checkpoint for a possible return.
Left on Thursday night, as you mentioned, with a lower
body injury. Daniel Sprung over the Border will skate this
afteroon afternoon and will be available tomorrow.
Speaker 2 (38:38):
All right, So Sprung is Sprung for the Kraken No
every for a while. Washington takes on the UCLA Bruins,
both teams looking for a postseason berth. They need a
win to do. So six o'clock we'll have the pregame
with SOFTI in the Hanks. Beginning one hour from now, Coog's.
Speaker 4 (38:56):
At eight to one.
Speaker 2 (38:57):
Head to New Mexico to face the Lobos Los Lobos
on the road tomorrow, and of course tonight, Mike Tyson
Jake Paul face off on Netflix at five o'clock Seahawks
one oh five on Sunday in Santa Clara.
Speaker 4 (39:10):
And to talk about that game, let's get to our
friend Greg co Soel.
Speaker 1 (39:14):
It's time for Egan's weekly visit with NFL Films Greg Coso,
brought to you by Seattle Cider Company on your home
for the twelfth Man and the NFL. Sports Radio ninety
three point three kJ r FM.
Speaker 2 (39:29):
Welcome back to Sports Radio ninety three point three kJ RFM.
Deck fane in today for Ian until two o'clock, and
I am pleased. I'm thrilled to be able to talk
to Ian's regular guests from NFL films. I hear him
every week with Ian. I watch him on Cowherd as well.
In the middle of the week, Greg co cell joins us. Greg,
good to talk to you.
Speaker 8 (39:49):
How are you, Yick, I'm doing great. How you doing?
Speaker 4 (39:52):
I'm doing fantastic.
Speaker 2 (39:53):
Obviously a big game for the Seahawks coming out of
the bye week on Sunday. And you know, Greg, it's
it's highly unusual that a team will cut a starter
in the middle of the season. We actually had Mike
Holmgren on our show yesterday. He said he never did
it in his entire career where he cut a starter
in the middle of the season. Was it a warranted
(40:16):
decision to cut Tyrrel Dodson based upon what you saw
on film?
Speaker 8 (40:20):
Well, it's funny you say that, Dick was last week
when I did the show with Ian and with you Millan,
we spoke about Terrell Dotson and again, I'm not saying
he should or should not have been cut, but I
think we both agreed based on tape study, that he's
probably not a starting linebacker in the NFL. And you know,
(40:40):
I think that Mike McDonald probably not. Probably he certainly
felt the same way, or he wouldn't have cut him.
So again, that's a tough, tough decision because now someone
else has to play, and now that position that Mike
McDonald clearly thought was a weakness. It's probably still a
week and it's going forward because there's a little bit
(41:01):
of an unknown and given who you're playing this week
and Kyle Shanahan and his ability to be really good
in putting second level defenders in conflict with what he
does with the run game and the pass game, that's
a little bit of a challenge. But I would say
that what was warranted was Dotson not being a starter.
I can't sit here with any you know, definitive statement
(41:24):
and say he should have been cut, but he's not
really good enough to be an NFL starter.
Speaker 2 (41:28):
Well, the other linebacker position appears to be stabilized. I
don't know if we'll say fixed yet. But what have
you seen from Ernest Jones onfield, both with his past
team and with Seattle.
Speaker 7 (41:39):
Yeah?
Speaker 8 (41:39):
I like Ernest Jones. I think he's a pretty complete player.
He's long, he's athletic, he's a good blitzer, so you
know he's a good player. The question is how quickly
he can be up to speed with Mike McDonald's schemes
and concepts as opposed to where he's been so but
he's a good player. The question is who's going to
start next to him in the Nickel deef?
Speaker 2 (42:00):
Yeah, that's right, And you know Tyree's right now, the
the mid round draft pick is going to get all
the snaps. I would appear, it would appear rather for
Tyrell Dotson. You know, in the last game, Greg and
Greg Goselz joining us. In the last game, we saw
how special Jared Verse can be for the Rams. And
you know that was a big point of conversation amongst
(42:22):
Seahawk fans on draft day. You kind of figured they
were going to go defense, and the two names that
probably came up more than any were Byron Murphy and
Jared Verse.
Speaker 4 (42:31):
Now, it's hard, necessarily.
Speaker 2 (42:33):
To totally one on one compare an interior defensive line
win with more of an edge guy. But what have
you seen from Byron Murphy vis a VI Jared Verse?
And should Seahawks fans be a little bit should they
have buyer's remorse at this point or is a little
bit too early to say that it's.
Speaker 8 (42:50):
Way too early? Plus I love Byron Murphy coming out
of Texas. And keep in mind on Mike McDonald where
he came from. He came from Baltimore. He had an
interior d tackle in matter Buk Justin Mattabuke, who was
phenomenal last year. I think he had twelve sacks. He
was a true foundation of that Ravens defense. I'm sure
he sees Byron Murphy the same way. Murphy was a
(43:11):
big time prospect. I know he's fought some injuries this year.
The sample size is too small, the book's still out.
You know, it's easy to look at Jared Verse, who's
played every game and made an impact and say that
it's right or wrong. They were both very, very good prospects. Obviously,
the Seahawks Mike McDonald felt that Murphy was the better
choice at sixteen, and they picked him, And I think
(43:33):
he'll end up being a really, really good player within
the context of the scheme. We all just want a
media gratification and right now, Verse just looks better because
he's been playing every game and he's had some special plays.
Murphy's just getting back from injury and we'll see how
he does. But he's a really really good prospect.
Speaker 2 (43:52):
Well guy, that was making special plays a lot last
year in his rookie season was their first round pick
of twenty twenty three, Devin Witherspoon. This year's he just
hasn't been out there making those big plays. And Mike
McDonald has spoken, we've got to get him in positions
to make big plays. But in order to get tackles
for losses, in order for you to get sacks on
(44:13):
corner blitzer and stuff like.
Speaker 4 (44:14):
That, it takes.
Speaker 2 (44:15):
Your you know, it takes one of your best cover guys,
if not your best cover guy, out of the secondary.
So talk about what you've seen on film this year
between the usage of Devin Witherspoon and what you saw
last year when he was a more impact player and
we saw him in the backfield a lot more.
Speaker 8 (44:33):
Yeah, And I think he's sort of fallen into the
fact that there's been injuries on the back, you know,
in the secondary this year, because I think you're ultimately
trying to decide what he is in the context of
your defense, and maybe in an ideal world, right or wrong.
You know, this is certainly up to Mike McDonald, But
you know, I think that a lot of people believe
that maybe he's best in the slot. I personally like
(44:56):
him outside, but that's just me. That doesn't make me right.
But I mean they've had in he's on the outside.
You know, they've ended up playing Josh job Who's I
thought it quited himself pretty well when he had to
start and play literally every snap for what two or
three weeks. But Woolen's miss time, Brown's miss time. They
played me and my Appritchett, the rookie from Auburn. So
you know, Witherspoon's had to move around a bit. So
(45:18):
I think it's probably been difficult for him to really
settle into one position and be, for one of a
better term, a playmaker. So I guess we'll see going
forward based on you know, who's who's out there. Woolen's back,
I guess his brown back keep playing. Will he be
the other corner?
Speaker 4 (45:36):
Likely?
Speaker 2 (45:37):
I at this point I think he will be, although
that they might make a change there and start Joe.
Speaker 7 (45:44):
Yeah.
Speaker 8 (45:45):
And I thought Joe played well. And it was two
or three games where he started and played pretty much
every snap, and I thought he played well. And you know,
he's an Alabama kid. I liked his tape coming out.
I guess he was undrafted. There were probably reasons for that,
always reasons, but I thought that, you know, he was
a physical, competitive, good sized kid and that he had
(46:06):
a chance to be a starter in the league.
Speaker 2 (46:08):
So were the last game against the Rams for the Hawks.
I think it'll be interesting to see if the Seahawks
defense can build upon what they did two weeks ago
against the Rams, because clearly they did not lose that
game against Los Angeles because of their defense. They took
a remarkable step between the loss to Buffalo and the
loss to LA on the defensive side of the ball.
(46:28):
Is there something materially different that you saw on film
that you think they might have found something that they
can use against San Francisco and we might see a
better effort against the Niners than we did the first
time against the Niners on Thursday night.
Speaker 8 (46:42):
Well, I'll answer that this way. Those are two totally
different offenses. So I think, you know, you can't really
compare and say that what they did against the Rams
is transferable to the forty nine ers. Because the forty
nine ers are their pass game is going to work
between the numbers. That's their foundation, and that's why the
linebacker situation which we mentioned is so critical because Tyree's Knight.
(47:05):
If he's going to be the starter, and I imagine
he will be, He's going to see some things and
have to work through some things that he's never seen
before in his life. It's going to be a real
mental game for him and that's going to be hard.
And one thing that Kyle Shanahan does as well or
perhaps better than any offensive coach in the league is
put second level defenders in conflict, and Knight's going to
(47:27):
have to figure all that out. I guarantee they're working overtime.
They've worked overtime this week because they've had to. You know, obviously,
Ernest Jones, because he's been with the Rams, is familiar
with the Kyle Shanahan offense, so this is not new
to him, but it will be totally new for Night,
and you know, we'll we'll see how he handles it.
Speaker 4 (47:47):
DK Metcalf appears to be ready to go.
Speaker 2 (47:50):
We don't have confirmation, but that obviously changes the Seahawks offense.
You know, Hugh was always on with us talking about
the impact that DK makes even when he is not
target get So can you go into that a little
bit and how the passing game looked different over the
last few weeks with DK and what he brings you
even when you're not targeting down him downfield.
Speaker 8 (48:12):
Well, Dick, can I answer that a different way because
you know what d Metcalf is and we know that he's,
you know, a big time receiver who's a vertical dimension.
He can work the intermediate routes. I mean, obviously he's
a big time weapon. I think the larger issue is
the return of Abraham Lucas because they have really struggled
on the right side of their offensive line. We know
(48:33):
that throughout much of the season there's been a rotation
and right guard with Bradford and the rookie Haynes. It
appears Bradford will you now plays pretty much every snap.
But they've really struggled at right tackle. And the problem
they've had is they've not been able to run the
ball with any meaningful consistency or sustainability, and therefore Gino
Smith has had to drop back far too many times. Yes,
(48:56):
you just can't do that now. I like Gino Smith,
and I think he's really res erected his career nicely.
But at his core, even though he's not a statue,
at his core. He's a pocket quarterback, and when you're
asking him to drop back that many times behind one
side of an old line that just was not very
good in pass protection. It's just hard to play. I mean,
I remember the first game against the Niners. They came
(49:19):
out and they really tried to run the ball, and
they made a serious commitment to doing so. I'm sure
you recall this, and they just could not get it done,
you know. And you know, offensive coordinators, if you're just
gaining one yard or two yarderser minus one, they just say,
what am I doing? I'm baking my head against the wall.
So they end up abandoning the run and trying to
throw the football. But it's just you just can't drop
(49:42):
back that many times with any quarterback. But you know,
and Gino is you really don't want to do that.
So they need some semblance of a run game.
Speaker 6 (49:52):
Now.
Speaker 8 (49:52):
The thing about the Niners defensively, they got a very
good front. They're not a blitz team much at all.
I think they have the lowest blitz percentage meaning five
or more rushers of any defense in the league. So
you're not going to get a lot of pressure. So
we'll see how they choose to play, but there needs
to be some kind of sustainability with the run game.
Speaker 2 (50:12):
What do your eyes tell you as far as how
much does Gino contribute to his own sacks by holding
onto the ball longer than you know, the standard two
and a half seconds.
Speaker 8 (50:24):
Yeah, and I think that's a there's a pro and
a coon to that, because pocket quarterbacks have to be
able to sit in the pocket and make what I
call late in the down throws. So what's the balance
there between staying in the pocket and making late in
the down throws when the bodies get close versus staying
that be too long and getting sacked. That's a hard
(50:44):
thing to really. You know, that's not quantifiable in my opinion.
You know, that's not a mathematical equation. So yes, at
does Geno at times do that? Yes, but he also
at times stays in the pocket and makes great throws
late in the down where there are people around him.
So it's it's there's a balance there, and there's no
right or wrong answer. That's the kind of quarterback he's because,
(51:05):
as I said, he's not necessarily a creator. He's not
going to run around like you think of the Josh
Allens or the Mahomes or the Lamars. He's not going
to do that. Can he run for a first down
once in a while, Yes he can, but he's he
has to do his work from the pocket, Dick. So
you know, obviously that becomes situational. You never want to
see guys get sacked for big yardage, but you have
(51:26):
to understand the situation and when you when it's sort
of okay versus when you just can't ever do that.
Speaker 2 (51:34):
Greg Cosell joining us from NFL Films. Greg, you mentioned
the importance of bringing Abe Lucas back. Let's go to
the other side of the offensive line with Charles Cross.
You actually, Hugh Millan actually used the word overrated this
last week when we talked when he talked about Charles Cross.
And I don't think he means that Charles Cross isn't
doing a good or a decent job at left tackle.
(51:54):
I just think when you draft the guy that high
to be your, you know, ten year anchor at left tackle,
you expecting a little bit more than he's been giving.
Have your eyes told you that when watching the film
as well?
Speaker 8 (52:05):
Yes, yes, And I've talked about that with Ian on
a pretty regular basis. That you know he's not a
bad player. It's not as if you know he's a guy.
Oh my god, we got to get rid of Charles Cross.
But as you said, you draft a guy in the
top ten, you know you're thinking along the lines that see,
you have to think of it this way. The most
important thing, and I've talked to offensive line coaches in
(52:25):
the league about this, when they talk about drafting a tackle,
the first thing they think about is when it's third
and long, they have to be able to pass protect
one on one because when it's third and long in
this league, you need to be able to send out
five receivers. If you have to start helping your tackles
on a regular basis, that significantly limits the options in
your pass game, Dick. So when you draft a tackle high,
(52:46):
you're expecting that he's going to be able to pass
protect one on one against every pass rusher in the league.
Are there some that are better than others? The boss
the Miles Garrett. Sure, But that's why you're drafting Charles
Cross in the top ten. And I would say say
that he's not really done that as consistently as you
would hope not that he hasn't done it at all,
But you're expecting him to be in the conversation with
(53:10):
how he's deployed with the Trent Williams and the Laramie Tunsils,
that's what you're expecting, and he's done that on occasion,
but not consistently enough where you feel totally comfortable.
Speaker 7 (53:21):
Greg.
Speaker 2 (53:22):
On the Niners side, I mean, outside the special teams
disaster that they've been, what has been the Niners major
malfunction this year, kind of preventing them from being that
Super Bowl favorite like we thought they would be at
the beginning of the season.
Speaker 8 (53:36):
Yeah, I think they've had some issues in past protection
this year and the result has been that purty that
their past game hasn't been quite as timing and rhythmic
as Kyle Shanahan wants it to be. It looked a
little better last week. I think with McCaffrey being back,
it gives them a lot more diversity formationally, it gives
them a lot more in terms of shifts and motions.
(53:59):
But I think their pass protection at times has been
a problem, and there was a stretch there where Purdy
was clearly leaving the pocket much more than they would want.
They really don't want him to do that because that's
not the nature of how they teach their past game.
He's capable of that. And then I think he started,
because of the pass protection to perceive pressure at times
(54:19):
and leave the pocket when he didn't need to. So
I think that's been one area that has been a
little bit of a struggle at times. But you know,
for the most part, it's been kind of an odd
season for the Niners because they're still pretty talented. I mean,
they're a very talented team. You know, they're a team
that does not blitz, as I said, so they rely
(54:41):
almost exclusively on a four man D line pass rush,
and you know, there are times that that doesn't create
the pressure that they would obviously like. But they've got
some good players there, so you can't go into a
game assuming they're not going to pressure you.
Speaker 2 (54:55):
Did you see a massive difference in explosiveness with Christian
McCaffrey last week when he struggled versus prior to his
injury or was it more an offensive line issue that
McCaffrey didn't get going against Tampa.
Speaker 8 (55:08):
I thought he looked fine. I mean, it's his first
game back. He had some bursts to him, he had
some juice to him. You know, it's first game back.
I wouldn't put a whole lot of stock in the
yardage from a week ago. You know they're going to
give him the ball. He only had thirteen carries. I'm
sure there'll be some kind of load management too. Maybe
that's all they're going to do. Don't forget backs very often,
(55:30):
you know it again, I happened to watch the Eagles
tape from last night, so you know, Barkley had a
thirty nine yard and a twenty three yard touchdown in
the fourth quarter and then all of a sudden he
has twenty six or one forty six. Sometimes that happens
with backs, you know. So the question is with McCaffrey,
will there be load management? Will they just give him
anywhere from ten to fifteen carries because of the fact
(55:52):
that he hasn't played and he has an injury that
can flare up. So if that happens and there's no
long run, the yardage totals may not look good. But
he looked good. He looked like he had his.
Speaker 2 (56:03):
Burst final couple of minutes with Greg go Sell of
NFL Film. So if there's something that Hawk fans should
be looking for, in this game. What is intriguing you
that you want to see play out on film in
this game on Sunday versus the Niners.
Speaker 8 (56:16):
Well, that's a great question. I mean, I think there
has to be some kind of sustainability in the run game.
Now again that doesn't mean Walker has to go twenty
four for one fifty, but I think there needs to
be some kind of sustainability because otherwise, and again, Lucas
is back and that's a real positive. But you just
don't want to be in a situation where you're dropping
(56:37):
back Gino Smith forty forty five times. I just think
that's too hard. So, you know, that's one thing I
would look for. I think they'll try to run the football.
They've essentially tried to do that almost every week. It's
just they have not been able to do it particularly well.
You know on the defensive side. You know, the Niners
present some interesting challenges because they're a little different than most. Now,
(57:00):
Seattle knows them and McDonald knows them. Don't forget with Baltimore.
Last year he played against San Francisco, So you know,
I'm curious to see how they choose to match up.
There's a lot of motion there's a lot of shifting,
there's a lot of tight splits there. You know, they're
a little different than a lot of teams in the league,
So how you match up to that will be interesting.
Speaker 2 (57:21):
I think it was that Christmas Day game, wasn't it
against the Party had like five interceptions in that game
against Baltimore.
Speaker 8 (57:26):
Yeah, I think he threw four four. It was an
odd game because they moved the ball, the Niners up
and down the field in the first half. I mean,
you know, the score made people think, oh, Mike McDonald
had his number. The Niners actually moved the ball really
really well in the first half, and then the second
half Party through some picks. They were tips. It was
an odd game.
Speaker 2 (57:46):
Hey, before we let you go, a quick question on
Russell Wilson, since people still kind of pay attention to
what he's doing wherever he goes, and you know, the
general thought is, well, the Steelers are using him like
the Seahawks used him, and that's why he's being effective.
Speaker 4 (57:59):
Is that to Solis or is there some truth to that?
Speaker 8 (58:02):
Well, there's always more to something like that, but the
overall profile is the same. Yes, I mean, keep in
mind that Warren and Harris they are two backs. Had
thirty five carries last week and they were down ten
in the third quarter, so they're playing very similarly. That's
the way you have to play with Russell, yes, because
and they're throwing the deep balls. They just traded for
(58:23):
Mike Williams, so they have two vertical weapons and Williams
and Pickens. He still throws a great deep ball. He's
never been a great progression reader, so he's not a
true drop back quarterback, so you have to play to
what he is. They roll him out a lot. That's
he's good at that. So yes, the profile on the
model is, yes, somewhat similar.
Speaker 4 (58:45):
Greg.
Speaker 2 (58:45):
It was a pleasure to talk to you. When will
we see an NFL matchup show this weekend?
Speaker 4 (58:49):
Right?
Speaker 2 (58:50):
Yeah?
Speaker 8 (58:51):
This weekend? The best way to do it because I
never know, you know, the times change every week. I
control that is to you know, basically DVR it. But yeah,
that's the best way to do it. There's a couple
of big games this weekend to Chise Bills, Raven Steelers.
There's some really really big AFC games this weekend.
Speaker 2 (59:08):
Absolutely, Greg, a pleasure to talk to you. Have a
great weekend breaking down the film.
Speaker 8 (59:12):
All right, I appreciate it, thanks so much.
Speaker 4 (59:14):
You bet. That's Greg Cosell.
Speaker 2 (59:15):
We'll be back here deck faan in for Ian until
two o'clock before we hand it off to Safti for
Husky pregame show on ninety three point three KJRFM.
Speaker 1 (59:25):
As part of our never ending coverage of the NFL,
It's time for Ian's weekly visit with Rob rang from

welcome back.
Speaker 4 (59:44):
It's Ian.
Speaker 9 (59:44):

Rob earlier because we can't go a week of college
football this late this season without having Rob rang On.

weekend as well.
Speaker 4 (01:00:26):
Hi, Rob, how are you.
Speaker 7 (01:00:28):
I'm doing very well.
Speaker 9 (01:00:30):
I appreciate you jumping on and kind of we're twisting
things around. We've got husky pregame show coming up at
two o'clock today, So before we get to that, let's talk,
as we always do on a Friday, about what to
watch for this weekend in college football. Not a bunch
of great matchups, but let's just start though with the
one tonight Friday night football on Fox. You're a Fox guy,
you work for Fox. You got a mock draft up there,
(01:00:51):
which we'll get to in a second. But who are
we watching this UCLAU doub game tonight?
Speaker 7 (01:00:56):
Well?
Speaker 10 (01:00:56):
I think you guys start off with the HS of course,
and you know, considering must they struggled this past week
against Penn State, then you're looking for a bounce back,
you know, from especially the senior quarterback Will Rogers. You know,
basically everybody, especially in the offensive side of the ball
really struggled in that football game. So the quarterback Will Rogers,
the running back Jordan Coleman. You know, I think that
(01:01:19):
perhaps the only other draftable player at this point, maybe
Jiles Jackson has a chance.
Speaker 7 (01:01:25):
Number five, the wide receiver five nine hundred.
Speaker 10 (01:01:28):
And eighty seven pounds, doesn't have that classic NFL size,
but he is you know, he's very quick and in
sabby with the ball in his hands, so so he's
an interesting player. And defensively, you know, while there's been
some struggles for the Huskies so far this season, I
really think the Carson Brunner has played his way into
a possible draft selection as well. So those are the
(01:01:50):
players I'm gonna be focusing on from the University of
Washington perspective. In terms of draft eligible players. Clearly, the
wide out Denzel Boston is a is a standout, but
again as a sophomore, he is somebody we're to be
watching for in the future. On the UCLA side, and
there's some interesting guys, and this is the team that
you know, grat they come in through this game. The
(01:02:11):
Huskies are five and five, looking for that win.
Speaker 7 (01:02:13):
It's going to get him into Bowl contention.
Speaker 10 (01:02:15):
UCLA is four and five, and so that might lead
you to believe that this is not a very good team,
but they are playing better. They've won three in a row,
and so I look at them as as a team
that very much has some prospects from NFL perspective that
are intriguing. I'm gonna start off with the right tackle.
You know, if we talked about Seahawks later, we know
how big of a deal the right tackle situation has been.
(01:02:36):
So Garrett di Giorgio is a big man, six foot
six three and ten pounds. He's powerful at the point
of attack. Number seventy two. He's somebody to be watching
on again. Wide receiver Logan Loya l o Ya is
how he spells his last name. Number seventeen, another one
of those slot receivers five for the level one hundred
and eighty five pounds that he's intriguing. But it's more
(01:02:59):
on the defense, the side of the ball where UCLA
is intriguing to me. They got a typle of linebackers.
Carston Schweger number forty nine, came Madrono number twenty, and
then my favorite player for UCLA and this draft backs team,
we talked about him before Number ninety three, Jay Tola,
big noseguard, six three hundred and twenty five pounds. He
(01:03:21):
is exactly the type of anchor in the middle that
the Seahawks have been lacking as far as run support.
Speaker 9 (01:03:26):
Rob rang joining us, we take a look at draft
prospects as it relates to the college games coming up
this weekend. Let's talk to Utah and Colorado number seventeen,
Colorado taking on a Utah team that's down to quarterback
number four. I think it's says Zach Wilson's brother who's
actually playing, but the quarterback I want to talk about.
We just talked about it on our show on Thursday.
Quarterbacks and draftable quarterbacks. Let's talk to shaduor Sanders again.
(01:03:48):
What's his status right now? You've got a mock draft
up there. What do you see with Shadoor Sanders.
Speaker 10 (01:03:53):
Well, I still believe that he is the most likely
quarterback to be selected first this year. I still believe
that Garrett ness Meyer from LSU, even a planer like
a Carson Beck from Georgia Wall, he definitely has had
his struggles.
Speaker 7 (01:04:09):
You know, the same thing in Alabama, of.
Speaker 10 (01:04:13):
Course, with their quarterback You've had some kind of hits,
and this is with some of these quarterbacks out there,
But to me, shuduar Standers is easily the most consistent
of the bunch.
Speaker 7 (01:04:24):
He doesn't have that wow size, the wow arm, or.
Speaker 10 (01:04:27):
Even the wow athleticism, but when you watch him, he
is very poised in the pocket.
Speaker 7 (01:04:31):
He is accurate to all levels of the field.
Speaker 10 (01:04:34):
I do have him going as the first quarterback in
this year's draft class. I'll let you have to look
at the actual mock draft to see which club in
the top ten makes that selection. But yeah, Shudar Standers
is the headliner. Of course for Colorado, at least the
quarterback position. Will talk so much about Travis.
Speaker 7 (01:04:52):
Hunter, Well, let's talk about another couple of players for Colorado.
Speaker 10 (01:04:55):
They have a linebacker, kind of safety linebacker mixed.
Speaker 7 (01:05:00):
I didn't daan.
Speaker 10 (01:05:01):
He's six two hundred pounds. He plays kind of a
rover position, but he's intriguing. And then one of my
favorite edge rushers in this class. He's a little bit steady,
maybe more guy for the CFL rather than the NFL
six foot one, two hundred and seventy pounder BJ Green
the second, but he has quickness and power. It's a
number thirty five for Colorado. Is another player to keep
(01:05:22):
an eye.
Speaker 7 (01:05:22):
On as well.
Speaker 9 (01:05:24):
Rob Rang joining us a shorter visit today because we've
got Husky football coming up at the top of the
hour at two o'clock this afternoon. Dick Fan will be
back with you to wrap up the show in just
a couple of minutes before we got about three minutes
here before I get to that, and we'd pass it
off to the torch. Back off to Dick. Let me
get to your mock draft. And as it relates to Seattle,
I laughed. There are some great people out there. I
(01:05:44):
think Dave Ruwoo does a nice job with the athletic
and all that. But I had to take a step
back because he did a mock draft and he had
the Seahawks taking a tight end. The tight end of
Michigan might be a really good player. That's fine. I
just I cannot fathom that happening. I have to think
they're going to go line of scrimmage. So you're mock
draft would be who for Seattle right now?
Speaker 10 (01:06:03):
K t tuyjamaloa, the edge rusher from Ohio State who
talks so much.
Speaker 7 (01:06:08):
About his basketball exploits.
Speaker 10 (01:06:09):
That's east Side Catholic, of course, in six foot five,
his two urn sixty five towns, and you know, throughout
his entire college career he has not produced the sacks
that one might have expected of a player that when
he's signed in Columbus, he was the number one rated
defensive prospect.
Speaker 7 (01:06:25):
In all of college and so there's all.
Speaker 10 (01:06:28):
These expectations he's going to be the next Joey or
Nick Bosa, and he's not those guys. In fact, I'd
argue in some ways he's actually better already. He is
so powerful at the point of attack, and when he
gets his sacks, it is in critical moments.
Speaker 7 (01:06:42):
I think that he has the size.
Speaker 10 (01:06:43):
And strength to be able to be the run support,
be the secty edge as the Seahawks have struggled with
for so long now. It's one of the reasons why
they made the trade, of course, for Roy Robertson Harris
and so again to me, bringing a Seattle guy back
to Seattle to fill up an obvious area of concern
for the Sea, to me, that's that's that's just too
(01:07:03):
easy of a selection to make at this point.
Speaker 4 (01:07:05):
Would he be.
Speaker 9 (01:07:08):
An edge guy like what they would list as an
outside linebacker like a Mafe Derek Hall type, or would
he be maybe inside is more of a three tech.
Speaker 10 (01:07:17):
I think that he can play either one of them,
but I think that he's at his best in the
line of scrimmage. I want to see how he works
out to see if he can be that outside linebacker.
Ohio State typically asks him just to play it along
the line of scrimmage.
Speaker 7 (01:07:29):
You kind of duke it out with the big boys.
Speaker 10 (01:07:31):
But again, the athleticism that you've referenced with his basketball
days and that I have heard the scouts on the
road have have referenced what an agile athlete that he is,
that there's no doubt in my mind he could play
that role. I think that he would be best for
Seattle because I.
Speaker 7 (01:07:49):
Do have faith in uh, you know, boy Mafe and
Derek Hall and each newos, et cetera, et cetera.
Speaker 10 (01:07:55):
I have less faith in Seattle's big defensive lineman other
than Buyer Murphy's second in Leonard Williams. At this point,
tip of the cap to the veteran that is Jay Reid.
But you know, I don't know that he's quite the
player now that he was in the past. That to
me is where seatle needs to be focusing on either
the offensive or defensive lines, the big boys along the
line of scrimmage.
Speaker 9 (01:08:15):
And you in your mock obviously you fcl taking I
can't found them Seattle taking a quarterback in the first round,
can you?
Speaker 7 (01:08:22):
I cannot again not in this the draft class.
Speaker 10 (01:08:25):
I mean, if a Shredwer Sanders is available to you,
then I suppose you know you could have that conversation.
But again, I think that shrue Dower Sanders is gonna
wind up going significantly earlier just because there's just not
a lot of talent the quarterback position, if is going
to go that route again. One of my favorite players,
Garrett Nessmeyer from from LSU, who I do not have
(01:08:48):
in my current mock draft. And the reason why he
is because he's only a junior. He has eligibility remaining.
He only has ten career starts. Anybody who watched him
against Alabama this past week saw a quarterback who looked
like it only.
Speaker 7 (01:09:01):
Started ten games. The talent is very real.
Speaker 10 (01:09:04):
But at the same time, as as kind of referencing
before with Jaylen Monroe the quarterback at Alabama, look, talent
is one thing you gotta have some consistency before you're
gonna go from a quarterback who, while he is has
struggle over times, Gino Smith remains one of the most
point and accurate quarterbacks in the NFL when he has time.
Speaker 9 (01:09:23):
All right, that's Rob Brian, appreciate your time. Dick Fane
will be come back in a second to wrap things
up right here on ninety three point three KJFM.
