Really a little wind blowing two through a thunderstorms, so
we are a ways away. We are a little wet,

Cincinnati Bengals. Define desperation. Cincinnati Bengals traded by the Cleveland

Presents Hardcore Football with Hugh Millon, brought to you by
Hunt Services, Kat on the Horn and Cole Hunts. Now
here's Hugh with Ian Furness on Sports Radio ninety three
point three kjr FM.
Speaker 3 (01:56):
All right, here we go, hardcore football. Hugh Millon and oh.
Speaker 2 (01:59):
Boy, day or two after this thing, it'll still have a
ton of stuff. It's odd that you have a game
that's as entertaining as we had on Sunday with the
Buccaneers and as high scoring as it is, and I
feel like you there are like a zillion things to
hit on and.
Speaker 3 (02:16):
We're gonna do all a lot going on in that game,
for sure, we're gonna do all of that.
Speaker 2 (02:21):
I'm gonna get to the defense and Mike McDonald taking
responsibility and all that in a second, because I feel
like there's more meat on the bone and more to
discuss defensively, if I can. I want to start with
the offense, and I'll go chronological in a couple plays
I want to talk about. Let me start with the
one that was just for us in the press box
(02:41):
on Sunday. Hugh was maybe the biggest head scratch. We'll
get to the final play in a minute, but the
biggest head scratcher I've seen in a while. Jalen Milroll
comes in for his one play and he has a
pitch that's back behind Ken Walker fumble boom. At the time,
Sam Darnold, I believe, was seven for eight passing Seahawk
offense was marching. They bring Milroe in Milroe for I
(03:04):
believe all his snaps this season, Hugh, he's either he's
either run or handed off. Never been a threat of
a pass, which I don't know if I can see
that in the press box. I'm assuming that the opposing
team does. And but that wasn't the problem necessarily as
much as the pitch. But just can you, hardcore football wise,
walk us through what they were trying to do. They're
(03:25):
trying to use these mill Row packages and it just
hasn't worked.
Speaker 5 (03:28):
Yeah, on that play, they're running a speed option and
I think even just in its structure, there's a lot
of elements to that play that don't make sense to me.
First of all, just option football involves you have the
n man on the line of scrimmage that you're optioning,
(03:49):
and you're leaving him unblocked so that when you get
up and you attack him in his face, he's got
to honor you as a running threat. And then you
pitch out at the appropriate time and and so it's
like the quarterback in essence is blocking that player and
oftentimes it be it can be a great player you
(04:10):
just option off of him right. So so if you
look at the blocking structure, nobody was unblocked. They had
a hat on a hat for everybody as if they
were running outside zone. Now, they did have a little
mini crackback where Drek Young, who's a physical wide receiver,
was blocking on the end. He missed that block the
defensive end went over the top and was actually the
(04:33):
guy to create the problem. So so you have you
had nobody option to option off of. You were in
the pistol, and so that means Canine was behind as
opposed to sidecar relationship, and so Canine he's got a
whole ass to get into the forty five degree relationship,
which he never really did. And so it wasn't really
(04:56):
in Milroe's line of vision. Was it was kind of
back a little bit more. It was to his offhand.
He's a right handed quarterback, non dominant hand, and to me,
the angles when you run to the tight end side,
that the the guy that you would option off. Again,
they didn't even option off anybody, but it widens him
(05:17):
from the formation. If you just if you just took
a protractor and you write this stuff, and I calculated
this when the Huskies had that ill fated play against
the Cougars a year ago, which you.
Speaker 3 (05:27):
Loved about it.
Speaker 5 (05:29):
By the way, if you were in purpose, uh and
the angles when you have a tight end out there
that widens out the the defensive end. He's in a
nine technique, So you're you're you're attacking a guy, but
you're doing it at such a flat angle that you
don't get the relationship that the separation. So to me,
(05:52):
I think you it's better to run to an open edge,
meaning no tight end. So the guy just outside the
tackle in the sea gap, you attack him his inside
armpit and and and then you hold him and then
you pitch it out. So none of that stuff was
present on the play. And so the confluence of all
(06:14):
those points to me, uh, you know, it just it
was a doom play to begin with. I mean, I
I like, you know, the irony in this is I
wasn't against jedfish going into the boundary, but I like
to do it away. I like to uh set send
the trips to the field and see and and if
(06:34):
they really overload to the field, like like they running
over front where they're shading to the strong side and
the middle linebackers may be pushing to the three receiver
side a little bit too much, and maybe the free
safety instead of being on the HASH, he's in the
middle field favoring the three receiver side. If you've got
a defense, and you'll see this, if you've got a
defense that is favoring the uh, the the formation strength
(06:55):
and and field strength. Again, if you're on the right,
on the right hash, get everybody, get the defense over
to the field. Now running into the boundary, even the
college boundary, you have those angles because the quarterback is
going downhill on an open edge. None of that happened
on Sunday. And so now what we're left with. Jalen
(07:17):
Miroe has played three plays. The success formula the analytics
use is forty the needed yards on first down, sixty
percent of the needed yards on second down, and all
the needed yards on third or fourth down. So we've
got a first and ten for three yards, which, by
the way, let me back up for forty nine er game,
(07:38):
second and six for one yard. Unsuccessful play. And by
the way, you punted two plays later, so it took
you out of a nice rhythm. First and twenty that
for three yards, and you say, well, first and twenty
is tough. Guess what first and twenty you should have
got more than three yards on a quarterback draw. Hell,
(07:59):
even if it was first in ten three yards isn't
isn't a success? So that you're over to and then
going going into the game and then obviously you don't
get a success. So we're five weeks into this, we
don't have a single successful play from Jalen Milroe. When
when you think about what we were talking about when
he was drafted, Uh, is he gonna threaten Sam Donald
(08:22):
like the way that Russell Wilson did with Matt flann
Is he you know, is he gonna at least be
the backup? Are you gonna have all these packages for him?
Like I think there was a lot of visions of
sugar plum fairies dancing in all of our heads about
what Milroe would provide. Maybe he will in the future. Clearly,
to date there's been a big, big nothing berger really well,
(08:44):
and Hugh, let me let me pick that up for
a second, because.
Speaker 2 (08:50):
And yeah, a god, when he's drafted on draft night,
I don't think you or me or any of us
talking about him really threatening Donald. But we did do
all the thing you just said, though, right, like this
is a guy that's hey, what kind of package can
you run with him? Especially red zone packages? And maybe
it was because we're fresh off red zone Gino Smith,
and red zone Geno Smith is basically just the Well,
(09:11):
if you watch the NBA Sel the Raiders game yesterday,
you know what red zone Geno Smith is.
Speaker 3 (09:14):
It's translated to Vegas.
Speaker 2 (09:15):
It's it's nothing good, like this is something they can
use and or you know, I mean, hey, whatever the
package is. As you're describing the three plays he's run,
and especially as you just broke down so well this
play on Sunday against the Bucks, Hugh, are they even
putting him in a position to succeed?
Speaker 5 (09:36):
Well, I think that Okay, they've run a quarterback draw, uh,
and they they ran a kind of a red keep
up the middle. We only got three plays, so they tried.
You know, to me, it's it's no better than a
wildcat if you remember that formation right when come in. Yeah,
because as as you accurately point out that he hasn't
(09:59):
yet thrown the so there's not a threat to throw it.
And I think as well as Sam Darnold is playing, Uh,
you know, it's not like you say well, we need
you know, we need a jumpstart or something.
Speaker 3 (10:11):
I think that it was a combination.
Speaker 5 (10:13):
Maybe people kind of said, ah, well, you've got the
the tuss push, all the you know, the short yardage package.
Maybe Jalen Millroe will be our third and one specialist,
you know, because of his his dynamic athleticism and and
it is and I just think at this juncture, the
question do I think it was worth a third round pick?
(10:36):
I said, I said yes, because of the of the
potential ceiling that if he hits, if a quarterback hits
and and some other things come together for him, then
obviously you know, it's it's franchise altering. And and and
yet the big challenge was going to be based on
and I looked at all of his Alabama tape, I
(10:57):
mean all of his Alabama tape, and I said, the
thing that he he needs the most help with is
going to be the thing that's the hardest, you know,
throwing to the right guy at the right time accurately.
That's the essence of quarterback and the most that's the
non negotiable part, you know. And and so uh, you
know that still remains and it really comes down to Ian.
(11:19):
It Is he gonna be more Anthony Richardson or is
he gonna be more Jalen Hurts? Yeah, there there's there's
act attributes to his game that parallel each of those
to some degree. The Seahawks were obviously hoping for more
of a Jalen Hurts trajectory.
Speaker 6 (11:36):
Uh.
Speaker 5 (11:36):
Time will tell, but I think I think every Seahawks
fan expected something a little bit more to date than
what we've seen from Milroe. And uh and and and
we'll we'll move on.
Speaker 2 (11:52):
Our core football, humil and all right, we'll stay to
the offense before we switch the other side of the football.
Tampa ties the game thirty five thirty five on a
five play, seventy yard drive. I mean, as I mean
this back and forth, I mean, who had the ball last?
Was gonna win this game? Is what it felt like.
And Seattle felt like they're gonna have the ball lefts you.
They get the ball with one aweight to go, they've
(12:13):
got one to all three timeouts left, and here we go.
First intend at the Seattle twenty three, Sam Donald finds
Cooper Cup who gets out of bounds for a nine
yard gain. It's second and one at the Seattle thirty two.
Clock is stopped and again you've got three timeouts left,
fifty eight seconds to go, and Sam Donald throws a
(12:34):
short pass middle for Cooper Cup. It goes off of
a helmet. Levante David intercepts it. He older than you
and I combined, but he made the interception. Good for
him and at the Seattle thirty five and effectively that
was gonna be the ball game. They're gonna kick a
field goal. My question to you is this. I think
Trent Green said on the broadcast, well, you know, went
off his helmet, and even McDonald said, well, I got
(12:55):
to look at the tape it kind of went off
his helmet. And I'm thinking to myself, first of all,
where's Hugh Mill And I need a harcop breakdown of
this because two things come to mind. You one of
them you might just tell me I'm a fool that
the first part is why are you throwing the ball
in the mash pit in the middle of the field.
And on a second and one, when you have all
that time and all you can do whatever you want
(13:15):
as opposed to throwing it there. Help run the ball,
take a time out, spike at whatever, but make sure
you end with the ball in your hands, as opposed
to if you throw it in complete, Hugh, like like
say it's incomplete somewhere else and the clock stops, and
then it's third and one and they stuff you. Well,
now you're punting the ball and you don't have the
ball in your hand. I just none of that made
(13:36):
sense to me. But more importantly, the play like Trent Green, Yeah,
I went off a helmet. I need more than that, Hugh,
What the hell happened there?
Speaker 3 (13:43):
Yeah?
Speaker 5 (13:44):
And I remember Levonte David playman playing in Husky Stadium
against Jake Locker and then a Bowl game that year.
You've been around, He's been a while for him. So okay,
So let's and credit Sam Darnold. He took a lot
of accountability, says, I could have changed the protection. I
could have thrown it out there to uh, to Tory
Horton to his right.
Speaker 3 (14:04):
So so as.
Speaker 5 (14:05):
You look look at it pre snap, I'm let's just
be in the quarterback meeting room. They have four the
Buccaneers have four down linemen, so you always assume that
they are are going to rush, but clearly they can
drop out as well. But but then you have at
the second layer, the linebacker and safety level you have,
you have four as well, So you got eight potential
(14:26):
blitzers in the box because you have a squeeze formation.
Speaker 3 (14:30):
This is part of of the UH.
Speaker 5 (14:33):
The Kyle Shanahan and Clint Kobiac kind of trees that
you have a lot of condensed formations with receivers close
to the formation. So so Winfield is out there on
the slot because Cooper cup is mirror just a few
feet to the left of cross the left tackle.
Speaker 3 (14:51):
Got me yep.
Speaker 5 (14:52):
So if you're if you're talking protection, you got eleven
personnel a tight end. The way that play is called,
the center is going to go right and the running
backs is going to go left. So you got three
pass blockers to one side and three to the other.
So as a quarterback, you say, I'm picked up if
(15:14):
they bring three either side. I'm only hot if they
bring four to either side. Now they ended up. I'm gesturing.
My hand doesn't help you, but I'm I'm gonna go
from Sam Darnold's perspective. So from my left, Okay, could
Winfield come? If I think that's gonna happen, I can
(15:34):
leave Sharbonnaise on my left. I can take sundel the center,
and I can call a protection where both the center
and the running back go left. So now I'm picking
up four to the left, but I'm only picking up
two to the right. What did I say to begin with?
The base protection is three to the right, three to
left right. If I redirect to the left, I turn
(15:55):
it to four to four and two. Pretty simple math, right,
But to it was basically a mirrored formation. It was
four to the left potential rushers and four to the right.
So what if he sends the center in the and
the back to the left and they rush, they still
have the potential. They could have rushed three from the
(16:15):
right side, which would have put you in a hot
or four. So it's kind of a you know, it's
a good disguise and you know, trying to say, well,
which of these overloads on either side can happen? You know,
like they guess wrong, and so it's three three to three.
Winfield is unblocked. Now, there's a common axiom in in
(16:39):
for quarterbacks in blitz pick up, you want to throw
into the blitz. If there's an unblocked guy. You don't
want to turn your back to one. You want to
throw into him, so you aware like and and and
then the hot is there. So Cup was coming out
over the middle and doing some kind of very ambiguous,
(17:01):
weird like stop over the middle, but then gained. I
don't like what Cup was doing whatsoever, in part because
Levonte David you mentioned, who gets the interception. He aligned
over the B gap that's between the gard and the
tackle to Sam Donald's right, so he was mugging up
as a potential blitzer. And then he rushes out and
(17:23):
he constitutes what's called the curl flat defender, the outside
shallow underneath defender to Donald's left. So he's running at Cup.
You gotta kind of gotta play man principles within his
zone because it's three deep, three under zone, but three
under he can't really spot drop. So David is going
to hunt up what's called number two, which is Cup
(17:44):
in the slot, counting outside in number one outside number two.
So David is honting is kind of playing man concepts
within his own with Cup. He grabs Cup. It should
have been defensive holding, and but I don't know why Cup,
knowing it was a blitz, would have tried to continue
to gain upfield.
Speaker 3 (18:04):
He should have.
Speaker 5 (18:05):
He should have turned around and or or crossed David's
face or something other than he did, but he did
get grabbed. So in the meantime all this happened the
the you know, there's an unblocked defender and ball's got
to come out. And so what Donald ultimately was trying
to do is he's looking. You know, he's following the axiom,
what did we say, you got to throw into the pressure.
(18:26):
If you're getting four a week, meaning four from my
left side, I want to throw to the left side.
The only guy to throw was Cup and so he's like.
Speaker 3 (18:36):
Dude, what are you doing?
Speaker 5 (18:37):
And then he and then ultimately he says, well, I'm
gonna dirt this ball. Well, when he goes to dirt it,
it hits off the helmet at Kareem's to Levonte David,
just bad luck now, he he Donald said, I could
have thrown it out there to uh Tory Horton.
Speaker 7 (18:51):
Right.
Speaker 5 (18:52):
Tory Horton was on the right side and he was
running a five step speed out. And the reason I
distinguished you said, well, why would you say five step?
Why is that relevant? If it was a Usually you
have the inside leg forward and it's an even steps,
so you can do a two step, you can do
a four steps, a six step, a six it if
(19:12):
if you would never ever do a hot blitz. If
unuy black guy, you would not throw a six step,
you might throw a four You certainly would throw a
two two step, meaning I'm gonna turn my back to
the the defender. And and remember now as we're talking
about this, this this axiom for quarterbacks, don't throw uh
(19:36):
to the opposite side of the blitz. Remember the forty
nine er game. Now it wasn't a blitz, but if
you can connect with the final fumble by Donald when
Abe Lucas got forklifted and and and uh and bos
you know had the game winning play. Ye, the if
you look at the angle of where Donald was vision
(19:58):
was he's throwing in the flat to the left sideline.
Got me Ye, Lucas is obviously the right tackle. So
if you just say his field of vision, darnold. If
he's throwing the ball all the way over the left sideline,
uh uh, you know, within a few yards of the sideline.
If if if there's action behind him to his right,
he's going to throw. He's not going to be protecting
(20:19):
the football like a running back. He's got he's just
holding it with one hand about to throw it right,
so the fumble happens. Why somebody would blame him for
the fumble, I have no idea why. But but uh uh,
but but if you can remember that what was he doing.
He was throwing to the opposite direction of the pressure,
even though it wasn't a blitz. So now if he
(20:40):
would have done the same thing and thrown to Horton.
And now we're sitting in a quarterback meeting room and
iamous quarterback coach, I'm saying, okay, Sam, you know we
had four week right and and we had a Sharbonne who,
by the way, fundamentally Sarboney uh lost that block because
you got to have the head on the inside, not
the outside. He got to use your left shoulder, even
(21:01):
though you want to use your right shoulder because you're
right handed probably I'm assuming Sardenay's right handed, use your
left shoulder because that keeps your head in the hole
and it keeps the the guy that you're blocking away
from the quarterback.
Speaker 3 (21:13):
Who's in the middle.
Speaker 5 (21:14):
So fundamentals like what shoulder you use are very important
because that that was a at least a contributing factor
charbonnay and poor fundamentals. But look, getting back to now
we're we're quarterback coaching Sam Darnald. All right, Sam, what
are you seeing here?
Speaker 3 (21:31):
You know?
Speaker 5 (21:31):
And then he'd explain and he says, okay, so you
know we're four a week, right, yep? Now are we
protected there? We didn't get the center that way, did
we know? So okay, So that means we got a
free runner to our left right, So why did you
throw to the right because you just got you just
got hit and it looks a lot like the San
Francisco play, but just to the opposite side, like right.
(21:55):
And so even though Donald's kind of falling on the sword, now,
if it's.
Speaker 3 (22:00):
A two step out route, he could he could.
Speaker 5 (22:04):
Come back and say, look, I know the rule, but
I threw it quick, and I'd be like, okay, as
long as you knew that there was a free runner
that you left and you threw it to the right.
What about a four step?
Speaker 3 (22:14):
Okay? Can you go one step and throw? Yeah?
Speaker 5 (22:16):
Probably with the four step, but now it is a
five step, which again is not common. More teams do
even numbers that because the inside leg is forward. So
now a five step if you're sitting there going structurally.
Can I throw to the right on a five step
out route when I have a totally unblocked defensive back,
(22:37):
veteran defensive back coming to my blind side who can
smoke me and get a fumble scooping score.
Speaker 3 (22:44):
Right.
Speaker 5 (22:45):
This is where quarterbacks say, we got to play the percentages.
And so when you have these rules like don't throw
away from the blitz, it's because enough offensive coordinators like
Mike Holmgren have been I don't use him because he
probably already had always had.
Speaker 3 (22:59):
It right, you know.
Speaker 5 (23:00):
But but you know people, you know, luminaries of the
game haven't been burned at least once, and they say, Okay,
from now on, we're not We're not throwing away from
the blitz and taking our eyes off the blitz. We're
gonna throw into the blitz. Right, So that at any rate,
that's I don't I think it's a gray area. Whether
he could have thrown a five step it was certainly
(23:22):
wide open. How how how the corner? So if he
had just gone one, two and then smoked it early
with anticipation, I would have said that's good quarterbacking. So
I kind of see why he said that, but that
would have been again him going having the impulse based
on the picture to go away from a very hardened rule,
which is don't throw away from the side of the
(23:44):
blitz juice was coming from the left.
Speaker 2 (23:46):
Did you real fast because I want to get to
the defense. Did you like the play call? Did you
like the thought of doing that particular play as opposed
to running it?
Speaker 3 (23:55):
Uh?
Speaker 5 (23:57):
Yeah, I mean he went he second and one. I mean,
you know you're under a minute, you still gotta Yeah.
I don't want to say you can't throw the ball.
I mean it's second Put it this way. You're trusting
your quarterback that it's second and one. If if something's dirty,
just don't take a sack. Like we can. We can
live with what We'll be third and one. We're in
(24:19):
four down territories, we're under a minute. Obviously we're on
four down too, So I got no problem uh throwing
the football whatsoever in that situation. Okay, I mean I
don't know, Am I missing something?
Speaker 3 (24:31):
No, I don't know.
Speaker 2 (24:32):
What I said is like, like, here's the thing, Like
it's second and one, you've got three time outs to
get a minute left, and if you don't get the
first down, like say, it's an incomplete pass there, and
then they stuff you on third On third down, you
gotta punt the ball. I mean, you're tied game TI
game at that point. You gotta punt the ball. And
so you're gonna give them the ball back you even
stop them at all. I guess that was like.
Speaker 5 (24:52):
Question, that's true, you know, on the on these notes,
I just assumed that I would remember that it was tie.
You're right, So yeah, yeah, Okay, that changes things.
Speaker 3 (25:03):
Doesn't doesn't that?
Speaker 2 (25:03):
Because I guess that was my thought. It's like, you
have to finish the game with the ball in your hands.
You have to and then take your chances in overtime
that maybe en force a field goal. And yeah, you know,
I guess I guess that was my only thought.
Speaker 5 (25:14):
And I think, you know, I just think they felt like, yeah,
they could get a complete.
Speaker 2 (25:19):
And and like you said, he was and from your standpoint,
he was trying to spike the ball kind of or
trying to just just ground it, kind of throw it
in the ground and hit the helmet and.
Speaker 5 (25:26):
You know what the coaches copy, which I I get,
you know, and I watched the end zone. I literally frozen,
went frame by frame, like how it came off his hand,
what what is the direction that it was going? Now
there's only a few frames between his hand and when
the football hit the helmet of the of the buccaneer
(25:46):
defensive linemanch But I you know, I'm almost like in
my pencil on my computer monitor saying, okay, this is
the angle was going that, you know, and then at
cream is like you know, playing pool billiards, right like
you hit it, and you know that an angle of
the incident ray and you know the reflection ray. There's
all that crap. But you're like, you're looking, you're saying, well,
(26:07):
the ball definitely changed his course, not a lot, not significantly,
but it changed it enough that it's my estimation that
had it not hit the helmet, it would have just.
Speaker 3 (26:23):
Landed, you know.
Speaker 5 (26:24):
Near the feet of cup. Okay, you know, in his direction,
and that not be a grounding point ball.
Speaker 2 (26:31):
There you go, Part one of hardcore football humuli and
talking offense. We're gonna talk defense. That should have been
number one. But you know what, I'm the host and
sometimes I have a Mike mcdawal kind of day, but
we'll talk defense at two o'clock with huw Mill. It's
the cracking ticket Tuesday. Don't forget to listen for the
sound to be the tenth car when you hear that.
We'll come back with more quick update on the baseball game.
Speaker 6 (26:52):
Next from the R and R Foundation Specialist broadcast studio.
Now back to he in Fornz powered by Seattle's closest
sports book, Snow Call Me Casino and Hotel on Sports
Radio ninety three point three kJ R FM.
Speaker 2 (27:16):
All right, here's your update on Game three of the
a l DS.
Speaker 4 (27:21):
I'm waiting series.
Speaker 2 (27:23):
Tiger's hosting the Mariners in Game three, schedule to start
at one o eight. It's one thirty seven. Your update is.
Speaker 3 (27:31):
There is no updates.
Speaker 4 (27:35):
It's funny if that works.
Speaker 2 (27:36):
Uh man, I'll tell you right now. Though we're lucky
to have We're lucky to have a roof here.
Speaker 4 (27:43):
Oh my god, don't even get me started.
Speaker 2 (27:45):
I'm watching some video right now on FS one, and
dude slamming a beer in an orange poncho and it
is covered in rain drops, which tells me it's still
raining there.
Speaker 4 (27:57):
Really shocking.
Speaker 3 (27:58):
I know.
Speaker 2 (28:00):
It's odd because when they have showed video of the field,
it doesn't feel like it's heavy rain. But I think
that they're also it feels and this benefits the Mariners
because we know how bad they are when a game
starts and restarts.
Speaker 3 (28:15):
They're bad.
Speaker 2 (28:16):
I think that they don't want to start a game
and then have to stop it restart it again. So
that's kind of the impression you get. But like, there
is no word out of Detroit. Just check their official account.
They're the ones the first announcement. There's a rain delay, nothing,
and I don't know where the media guys that are
there are what they're doing. It must be having a
sandwich or something. So yeah, basically they are. There's no update.
All right, we're gonna talk Cougar football, Alex breaking m
(28:38):

Speaker 2 (30:00):
Time for a week we visit with the Coogs minus
m Canaday. He's got some stuff going on. His wife's competing.
I think in a bodybuilding competition, she's just an absolute stud.
Dan that's I'm not sure if he should be doing
it too. I mean, Brink the most fit people in America.
Speaker 3 (30:14):
They make me sick, But good for them. Huh.
Speaker 7 (30:17):
So they got some their priorities are in line over there. Man,
they're doing it right in the Bruce family. So kudos
and his wife.
Speaker 3 (30:25):
Yeah, go get them, Evelyn.
Speaker 2 (30:26):
All right, let's get to it before we get to
Mississippi State top five team and everything else going on
the challenge this week, Let's look back. I'm gonna ask
you a bigger picture question because it's been a while
since the Colorado State game, but the San Diego State
win looks better by the day.
Speaker 8 (30:42):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (30:42):
North Texas finally lost a game, but have been impressed
of all year. You know, you play the Huskies close
through three quarters, uh, and then and then you go
and just dominate Colorado State. Who and what is this
Washington State team?
Speaker 7 (30:58):
I think I think they're getting better in all honestly,
and I think there there's very there's been a very
clear shift right with zebech House at the helm, you know,
playing quarterback, and you know whether that is you know,
skill set wise or just mentality. I mean, I think
that's a big part of it. And to your point
about really big picture, I mean, you know, a week
(31:18):
wanting if out is what it is. I think that
it was a good football team in general. But you
know that's just you know, he starts slow, Saty, A
thing looks great North Texas. You know you're on the road.
He turn the ball over. It's kind of the nature
of football against a good football team, so it looks
way worse than probably it could have been. You mentioned
you dub game and then a good win on the
road at Colorado State. This team has set themselves up,
you know, regardless of what the next two weeks look
(31:40):
like with Ole Miss and Virginia, this smith set themselves
up heading into the back half of this season. I
think to accomplish some goals that everybody from the outside
would look and say, BOYD, kudos to Jimmy Rodgers and
this group if they're able to pull it off.
Speaker 2 (31:53):
I think to Alex that one of the things that
I thought going into this season and just kind of
from the outside looking in as a fan and everything else,
is and I know that there's people and especially you
know I'm sure Rogers wouldn't admit this publicly and people
in the program, but if we're being honest, not only
is it year one of a new coaching staff. That's
and that first of all comes into play because year
(32:13):
one of a coaching staff in today's college football, you're
building something. It's also a year the last year of
this kind of uncertainty. We know next year they're in
a conference. I think, and I don't know, maybe you disagree,
but I think the path to do some special things
in the new PAC twelve, like getting this CFP and
getting that group of five bid is far easier than
it would be for Wazoo if they were like saying
(32:36):
a big ten or something like that. So to me,
it's not about this year. It's about building the culture,
building the program, letting Jimmy, you know, get his footprint,
his fingerprints on this thing and building it up. And
while there will be some frustrations along the way and
some rod bumps, and we certainly saw that down in
Texas and the fourth quarter with Washington, I'm more like, hey,
(32:58):
and you know me, Alex, I'm not always last out full,
I'm a crazy ass fan, but I look, I think
this is about building it for the next few years
down the road.
Speaker 7 (33:09):
Yeah, I feel the same way. And there's a couple
of things I really like. Right when you kind of
peel back after five weeks and the bye week, is that,
you know, the North Texas point total and then kind
of the Husky point total. I don't think really tells
the full story about the defense. Like I think defensively,
it's a really good scheme that's coached really well and
really hard, and they really fly around, and so I'm
(33:30):
excited about kind of that brand of football defensively, and
then offensively, I mean, when you got the right guy
pulling the trigger, Damy Froynd does a really nice job
being creative and finding ways to get playmakers the ball.
And I think as they build an offensive line and
they get better at at that piece of it, They've
got some young running backs in the stable, you know,
I think that system offensively can win, and to your point,
(33:55):
win in this kind of future path twelve That and
I said this last year with Jay kickered and kind
of that whole situation was it didn't it doesn't really
matter for Washington State how it works. They just need
to win, right, win a lot of games. If you
win a lot of games, you're in the national conversation
no matter what league you're in, right, whether you're a
group of five team or four team, it doesn't matter.
Like the college football currently is always going to benefit
(34:20):
the teams that are winning, both from the attention from
the outside and the potential of being in an expanded playoffs.
Speaker 2 (34:26):
There's no doubt Alex Alex Springs joining us. There's no
doubt that Zeb's you know, has has elevated the offense. Again,
let's take a step back, bigger picture. Is this an
offense that in the future Jackson Potter, when he gets
his chance again, can still flourish in because it feels
like they want a guy that's pretty mobile.
Speaker 7 (34:43):
I mean, I think that's true. But I also think
again when we think about when where Jackson Potter was good,
because there were moments where he was good, right, I
mean the stage he was good, Yeah, he had you
know that lot, the last drive, you know, really most
of the IDO game, I think he was okay, you know,
and then it's struggling in North Texas. But he can
do a lot of the things that dur aftons Zeby
do as far as play action passed, get out of pocket,
(35:04):
he could throw in the run. He's athletic enough. Yes,
they utilized Zev's legs a little bit more in the
run game. But really where Zebby different or has been
different than Jackson Potter is that Zebby's willing to step
up and move in the pocket and use his legs
off schedule, and I think Potter can do that. I mean,
he's not gonna, you know, he's not Michael Vick out there,
but he'll get you first down. He's just gonna be
(35:25):
willing to do that. I think that's one thing that
I think Jimmy Rodgers and Danny Froyd had alluded to
at one point, was that Jackson Potter just wasn't kind
of committing to making plays off schedule, and that was
hurting him in the end because he was kind of
a statue back in the pocket.
Speaker 2 (35:39):
Is Alex Brinks joining us? Listen, let's let's get I've
avoided it long enough. Number four team in the country
on the road, SEC country a big challenge. I do
look at their scores this year and I'm curious. So, okay,
Georgia State, I'll sixty three seven.
Speaker 4 (35:52):
That's fine.
Speaker 2 (35:53):
They played Kentucky. Kentucky played them close. That was in
Lexington in a seven point games thirty twenty three. Arkansas's
a train wreck, fired the coach. They beat them forty
one to thirty five. Again one score game. Tulane supposed
to be a really good group of five team. They
beat them by thirty five, forty five to ten. LSU
they beat by five. So listen, they're getting a ton
of love. Lane Kiffin's got a great offense, found his quarterback.
(36:15):
It looks like as well number four team in the country.
What are you thinking about this game? Because I know
a lot of bodybag game and this, this and this.
I know that players don't think that way. So what
do you want? What do you expect out of Saturday?
Speaker 7 (36:29):
But you know me, and I'm a I'm a glass
half full guy, right and so, uh, you know, I
look at it like this. I mean, this is a
huge challenge right on the road SEC opponent, you know,
really quality football team. I think they're worll coach with
Lane Kiffin, you know, but I think they're not as
good as they have been in past years. Frankly, and
(36:49):
I think that you know, you can look at that roster.
I mean it's a talented roster, and there's certain areas
that you know they've got They've got quote unquote sec
level talent, right, particularly on kind of offensive defensive lines.
But you also look at the skill positions right and say,
you know, they have a former Washington State wide receiver
starting for them to John Striblings. They have a former
Washington State defensive back Peagishi getting started for them. They
(37:10):
have a Division two quarterback starting for them in uh
In Trinidad, Shambliss. Right, So they have guys at the
skill positions that are really talented football players, but they're
not that far off right as far as recruit you
know their recruiting pass or where they came from from
Washington State. You know athletes that are on the field
to Washington State. So we did this before Ian. We
went and played Auburn right when I when I was
playing at six, and I came away. Even though we
(37:33):
got beat in that game, right, we played really well
in the first half, particularly the first quarter. You make
some mistakes and it gets away from you. The reality
is this washing To State football team, particularly with the
guy like Zevi Kaski, has got kind of irrational confidence.
They're not going to back down from anybody. And for
old myths, this is a really dangerous game, right if
the coops are in this game late and they're thinking
ahead about the games they have I think at Georgia
(37:55):
or against Georgia and the next week. I mean, that
can get really tight, really fast. So for Washington State,
you gotta play, you gotta play well, you gotta you
can't turn the ball over. You got to minimize the
explosive plays. But I think personally that illness is not
quite as good as maybe their ranking, and I think
Washington State's a little better than their record shows, which
would lead me to say that this is there's gonna
(38:16):
be moments in this game where we're all going to
be like, oh, Washington State had a chance.
Speaker 2 (38:20):
In this Yeah, And we've been on I mean we
we've been on the field before with those types of schools,
you know, six with Auburn and I mean bowl games,
what have you never really looked out of place or
out class. A little different now because of the way
the college FOOTBA landscape's going. But as you said to me,
it feels like, hey, get through the first couple series,
you know, maybe it's it's you got them thinking a
(38:41):
little bit keeping it close, don't. You just can't turn
the ball over. I mean that's as simple as that.
I hate the cliche and sports of football, but you
just can't do that and see and take your chances.
All right, Alex, you got a zillion miles to get
to to get down there. Good luck playing trains and automobiles.
Make sure just gets down there safe with you. Tell
us about the new shoes that are actually old shoes.
Speaker 7 (39:00):
Yeah, you know, really fun kind of family history. Osaga Shoes.
Check out Osaga dot com. My brother and I are
reviving a shoe brand that my my grandfather starting the
seventy alongside Nike out of Eugene, Oregon. Kind of retro
style runners, really comfortable, great for everyday walking shoes, really
stylish chakeot Osaga dot com would love to support and
(39:23):
you know we're excited to see where it goes.
Speaker 2 (39:24):
Thanks buddy, have a great trip, safe travels down there.
We'll talk to you next week.
Speaker 7 (39:29):
Thank you.
Speaker 2 (39:29):
There you go, Alex Brink, our weekly cook segment will

Make sure you listen for the sounder when it plays

five ninety five for those tickets.
Speaker 3 (40:18):
Here we go.
Speaker 2 (40:19):
Mariners Tigers game three, Alds.
Speaker 3 (40:24):
Schedule to start at one o eight.
Speaker 2 (40:26):
That would be an hour ago rain delay update none.
We move on quarterback Needy Bengals. They have traded for
Joe Flacco. They think Jake Browning's awful. He is, so
they went and got the guy that's nine hundred years
old and Joe Flacco with a division rival Browns must
think he's really good because they traded him to Cincinnati.
Speaker 3 (40:48):
What a train wreck.
Speaker 2 (40:49):
Jerry Jones fine two hundred fifty thousand dollars for flipping
off the crowd last weekend. Says he just used his thumb.
Jerry thumbs a long way from the middle finger, fella,
long long way guy, try though, good good effort on
your part. God, don't forget Anders has a pick factor
fiction two thirty five. Your chance to a thousand dollar
we could prize ten thousand dollars grand prize. Thank god,
(41:10):
you're making a pick today because we need you. Yeah,
you are carrying the show right now, sir. Let's get
to a more hardcore football humail and standing by here.
What the hell happened that defense with Mike McDonald's so good?
Speaker 3 (41:23):
Mike McDonald's a genius or is he? What the hell happened?
I'm stunned. I'm still stunned.
Speaker 5 (41:29):
I can't believe what I saw and and you throw
in the fourth quarter of the cardinal game, when when
going into the fourth GLA's Rights only had three last
five quarters have been an utter disaster. I mean, I'm
just I hope that Julie in Love is the greatest
secondary quarterback in all of football, and that Devin Witherspoon
(41:49):
is like the greatest juice intensity dude. Because and and
they're just missing those guys so much. Uh, because I
just can't fathom what they did. I mean, you know,
completions of ten and more yards coming into the game
that the c X defense was average averaging yielding six
point seven five, they gave up fifteen. How about fifteen
(42:10):
plus yards they gave came in the game averaging exactly four,
they gave up ten. How about twenty plus yards they
came in averaging two point twenty five per game, they
gave up seven. It was just like they almost collectively
were worse in one game than they had been in
four And uh, you know the third down conversions third
and there's four convert I should say attempts attempt at
(42:34):
conversions that Tampa Bay had. Where was third and thirteen
to third and seventeen they convene. They converted three of
the four.
Speaker 6 (42:43):
Wow.
Speaker 3 (42:43):
And I looked up.
Speaker 5 (42:46):
The NFL average for the last three years combined thirteen
point five percent of the time when when when it's
between third and thirteen and third and seventeen, does the
offense convert thirteen a half percent? If you then say, okay,
what is the chance that you'd get three or more
in four attempts? Based on just the binomial probability of that,
there's a point eight eight four percent chance that you
(43:08):
would pick up three, three, or more less than less
than less than one in one hundred.
Speaker 3 (43:14):
Wow. And so you know, it was just that kind
of day.
Speaker 2 (43:17):
And Mike McDonald took all the responsibility after the game.
Speaker 3 (43:20):
He came in.
Speaker 2 (43:21):
I was sitting in the press conference last night. He
and I'm sitting there listening. He walks in before and
anybody could ask a question. He spent about three or
four minutes saying, this is on me. It's my defense.
I I like, and he just he just basically took
it all on himself. We know this guy's a defense
of Guru. He didn't turn dumb overnight. He just but
I think a couple of things jump out. I appreciate
(43:41):
him saying that, kind of taking the press and didn't
want to use any excuses with Witherspooner Love being out,
Derek Hall going out after just eight plays, any of
that stuff. De Marcus Lawrence not playing. He didn't want
to use any excuses. Uh, he took full responsibility. But
you mentioned it. It's it's not just the game against Tampa,
as you said, I forgot about that, the Arizona game.
It's five straights. They've been lit up.
Speaker 3 (44:01):
They've been lit up, and and I do respect that.
Speaker 5 (44:05):
You know, I'd made a comment about I wish that
we saw that coming out of Montlake, and on multiple
occasions it just it just hasn't emerged from there in
similar circumstances. I think, uh, it's an opportunity for leadership.
His players are knowing that he's taking that, and I
(44:25):
bet you he says that internally too, and and then
you know what what the response is just kind of
uh viscerally, you say like, hey, I want to I
want to do my part for this guy because of
how he's taking that kind of accountability. But you know
what the fact is, and I don't just like Mike McDonald.
I love the guy, you know, I mean sports love, right,
(44:48):
but I mean who he is, the person he is,
how the teacher he is, how his vision of football.
I'm not giving up on Mike McDonald. He has had
a horrible five quarters. His team has had a horrible
five quarters. But I am totally of the belief you
can record this and play it later. I'm of the
(45:08):
belief he will fix this problem. He's because he's that good.
And but the pass rush just was non existent. There
was nothing up the middle. Leonard Williams, where were you?
I never thought he could go sixty minutes and be that.
I don't know, just it's October. He was like like
(45:29):
he was hit, you know, he was like a ghost.
Speaker 3 (45:32):
Where was he? You know?
Speaker 5 (45:34):
Byron Murphy? You no, the only thing those two guys
did is have fifteen yard penalties, yep. And so there
was no push from the middle. The edge pressure is
non existent, you know, for for those who you know
and and you know I've talked about it. I say, okay,
let it's baseball time right now. Let's use a baseball
term eight aircraft carrier. Well, if you're gonna have an
(45:54):
aircraft carrier on your defense, it's defensive end. That's the
position that aircraft carry it like that slugger in the
middle of your lineup. If you're going to use that
term for defensive football. In my opinion, it only applies
to a defensive end. Maybe Aaron Donald, you know, like
like a once a generation type, you know, guy in.
Speaker 3 (46:15):
The end right right, you know.
Speaker 5 (46:16):
But but but generally a guy who can create that
kind of havoc on the edge. And you know, well
he thought long and hard like hay shid. Have we
gotten involved in the Micah Parsons sweepstakes?
Speaker 1 (46:28):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (46:29):
Was nothing from the edge. Nothing nothing. It's well, you know, listen,
DeMarcus Lawrence isn't the DeMarcus Lewarrens from ten years ago
or five years ago whatever. But you know, not having
him hurt. Derek Halla con mentioned he played eight He
had eight plays before he left with the old league.
That's a concern. I think what you said there is
interesting about Leonard Williams. I'm sitting next to Farhad Logy
from TSNY coaches. He's coach football forever. He's in the
(46:50):
actually Canadian Football Leaue Hall of Fame. We're sitting and
watching and he said the same thing. He says, ninety nine.
Speaker 3 (46:55):
Is invisible today.
Speaker 2 (46:56):
And that's hard from the guy six six and and
it's like and it is it's like he you know,
and and we all love Leonard Williams. He just had
that day. Bra Murphy continues to be a head scratcher.
You know it just it feels like there's much much
more there than we're seeing, you know, the Hall injury,
Mike Morris ends up playing thirty nine percent of the
defensive snaps. And I mean, I honestly I love Mike Morris.
One of the best interviews on the team.
Speaker 3 (47:17):
Good dude.
Speaker 2 (47:18):
But that's like, that's off brand Red Bryant. That's like Walmart.
Go to wet Walmart and get Red Bryant because the
body is huge, but he's on he's on an edge rusher.
That's that's not his job, right, he doesn't have the twitch. No,
I mean, it's just it's just watching early August football. Well,
so you got all that going on. So Baker Mayfield's
is back there having a sandwich and just doing his
thing and carving them up. And then before I get
(47:40):
to I just want you to break down a book
in a second, because he just looked like he was playing,
you know, down at still come as a grown ass
man again, like this like this was easy. I'm playing
in the squally league or something.
Speaker 3 (47:49):
This is fun.
Speaker 2 (47:51):
But as before I get to him. Devin Withers puts
down his three games out of five this year. He
was healthy, lab played all the seventeen last year, but
he missed games. Is his rookie years. Well, I don't
get it, man, I like, how do you play one
hundred percent of the snaps one week, get nine days
off and then you're out again.
Speaker 3 (48:06):
Julian loves out. He's missed two games this season.
Speaker 2 (48:08):
I mean that's a concern if those guys are getting
that banged up, if there's something nagging those guys, if
there's something that's that's you know, is a long term
I mean they've built their defense around a couple of
those guys, specifically Witherspoon in love Well.
Speaker 5 (48:21):
You go back to when he was a fifth pick
in the draft, and uh, you know when they're when
the Seeraarks are picking late in the draft, you know,
I'm like, well, there's a lot of guys you know,
maybe this guy, that, maybe that guy. But when then
you're drafting fifth, you know, I'm gonna come on the
stations such as yourselves and others and people say, well, okay,
who do you want him to take? Well, I I
was very firm that year Jalen Carter, He's worth the risk,
(48:43):
go back. I'm sure it's in multiple podcasts Jalen Carter,
and now I have been very thrilled with I'm in
hit the competitiveness from Witherspoon. At no time have I
ever thought it's a that he's a disappointment. He's just
too much of a competitor, is too good of a player?
Is he perfect?
Speaker 7 (49:01):
No?
Speaker 5 (49:01):
But I have not been disappointed, and I'm not disappointed
today as I speak. But we talked about Witherspoon. You know,
I remember just doing his weight like he like at
Illinois he was one hundred and eighty eight pounds, and
I'm sitting there going like like how much can you
bulk up? I mean, that's just like that's his body style.
(49:23):
You know the term ectamorphic, he's you know, he's a
little bit ectomorphic by defensive backstand.
Speaker 7 (49:28):
I don't.
Speaker 3 (49:29):
I don't, Yeah, I don't know.
Speaker 5 (49:33):
Like that's a ectamorphic means you're inclined to be thin.
Its hard to put on weight. Think DeVante Smith.
Speaker 3 (49:40):
I can't relate, But that's cool. Same right, So so
that that would be endomorphic, right, it would be the opposite.
Kevin Durant, a beautiful Hall of Fame athlete.
Speaker 5 (49:53):
You know, you know that no matter what he tried
to do to you know, he could squat you know,
a thousand pounds, you know, every day for his life.
Speaker 3 (50:01):
He's still not going to be you know.
Speaker 5 (50:02):
So anyways, so Witherspoon just body style, there's going to
be some limitations.
Speaker 3 (50:07):
I mentioned it.
Speaker 5 (50:08):
Mike Holmgren was particularly attentive to that concern about, Hey,
you get those little guys, you know, they can get
banged up, particularly with his play style. So so that's
something that was discussed at draft time. We're seeing it
a little bit here and it hurts.
Speaker 2 (50:24):
Okay, let's get to uh. I mentioned at Buke a
mecha and Buka. He just he went bananas yesterday without
those guys.
Speaker 3 (50:32):
Listen.
Speaker 2 (50:33):
Tyle Kotta was number two on tackles for Seattle with
seven A good story, battled his way on an NFL
roster often on the last three years, basically been a
practice squad guy he got called up, and usually when
he got called up the last couple of years here
it was special teams only. I'm looking out there and
seeing a lot of thirty eight and eight and then
all of a sudden. I know, we all want to
hit Onrek Wolan. What happened the second he left the game?
(50:56):
If I believe they picked on picked on his replacement, right,
So yeah, yeah so. But more importantly, as everyone's watching
that game on Sunday, every Seahawks fan can relate to this.
All we saw were guys running wide open, wide open
all day like like there wasn't a pass defense.
Speaker 8 (51:14):
It was.
Speaker 2 (51:15):
It was insane. I mean, I'm looking here at the
NFL stats, they didn't have a pass defense. Like, how
do you go through an entire game with a guy
throwing forty passes not having one pass defense?
Speaker 5 (51:24):
You so walk through what hardcore? What happened in this game? Well,
it starts with the lack of pass rush. And so
for Baker Mayfield it was like seven on seven. And
it wasn't just that he had time. I mean I
had one play where he takes an eight step drop.
He said, wait a minute, I thought I thought there
were odd numbers. Well, when you open to your left
(51:45):
in play action, then it's going to be an even
number and it's an eight step drop plus three hitches.
And then when you freeze the tape from the end zone,
to see his angle. It's like it's like Moses in
the red seat, Like there's these huge throwing lanes. Nobody's
around him, Nobody could touch him if they had a
tennis racket swatty now right, like so so he's got
(52:05):
this totally clean pocket. But just man, there are so
many notes here of how when Mike McDonald says he
got out coached, it's I I hate to say it
because it's in evidence. And and for example, let's go
the fifty seven yard how about that one in third
and thirteen? But if we can't but scores tied, so
(52:29):
this is this and uh, late in the third quarter.
So here Mike McDonald is saying, all right, I've I've
got pretcht in the game. I've got a I've got
to put a safety over the top, all right, So
you're gonna you're gonna what You're gonna put Kobe Bryant
(52:49):
the safety on that side over the top to help.
So Pritchard doesn't have deep responsibility because there's three receivers
to that side. Now you're gonna have uh, the safety
to the single receiver side. He's gonna use a term
called poach, which which poach means you're aligned to the
single receiver side by by your stance on the field,
(53:11):
but your attention and your eyes are to the three
receiver side, so you're gonna push to the three receiver side. Well,
all of that, what all that does? That's all great
for the strong side to help Richard in the to
the three receiver side. What about the single receiver side
with a Mecca Abuka one on one, free access, no jamming,
no safety help, and he's on Josh job. Well, that'd
(53:33):
be fine if you had, uh, you know some of
the elite, you know, Jalen Ramsey from five years ago,
or you know with some of these top you know,
Sace Gardener or something, but you will allow free access.
A Mecca has a great move, you know, he starts
to go to the out route. I bet when they
practice it, he goes three steps to the out. But
(53:55):
because job was to the outside, he he he, he
goes one step and he goes up further. And you
remember Mayfield kind of caught him late because a Mecca
got up the field a little faster than then it
was supposed to time out, and so he almost outran
Baker's arm. Right, but so so Okay, so freeze, what
we're talking about an immensely pivotal play and we're talking
(54:17):
about a coverage that is designed to help a second stringer,
but it's leaving you one on one with Josh job
you know. I mean, he's not Patrick Sertan, right, but
he's one on one with an emerging I mean, if hell.
Speaker 3 (54:33):
If you had to do the the voting right now,
he might be the guy. It might be Rooky of
the Year, might also be be first seam All Pro.
Speaker 5 (54:41):
He's got five touchdowns and I'm gonna get you know,
like where we're like and Baker Mayfield.
Speaker 3 (54:45):
Hell, he'd get my vote for m v P because
he's got four fourth quarter comebacks, three of which are
in the final minute.
Speaker 5 (54:52):
Like, who are you gonna put as the MVP of
the NFL above Baker Mayfield? Right now, every team has
a loss, so you can't don't say Josh Allen. So
he like, so the of the one loss teams, he's
done the most to help his team by far, and
so that's what you're dealing with.
Speaker 3 (55:07):
But you know, so that's a factor.
Speaker 5 (55:10):
And then how about the touchdown pass that a Mecca
had in the back of the end zone, you're playing
a coverage there. If you go back and watch the tape,
which I've done of the the Tampa Bay against the
the Falcons, a Mecca had the game winning catch with
(55:30):
a minute.
Speaker 3 (55:31):
And four to go in that game, and it was
the exact exact same play.
Speaker 5 (55:35):
I went back and looked at it because when when
the Seahawks hit it, I'm like, wait a minute, isn't
that the play they beat the Falcons on? And so
I looked at it. I went back, Yep, trips all
the whole route concept. It was the same play, no way,
So you know the Seahawks. Yeah, it's it's so people
call a Mills concept that.
Speaker 1 (55:54):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (55:55):
Oh, I guarantee you they studied the hell of it.
Speaker 5 (55:57):
I guarantee you on Friday, which is red zone Day,
that they they scripted that at least once probably in
team period and in seven seven at least twice, actually
maybe more so they've seen that play. And but against
the Falcons, the Falcons chose to allow a Mecca, who
was the number one receiver meaning the widest close to
the sideline, they allowed him to have free access. So
(56:19):
Mike McDonald says, well, if I have allow a Mecca
free access. He's building up this head of steam. He
makes a little nod to the outside. He's he's going
full bore. I don't want him to get that kind
of momentum, so let me jam him. Well, I bet
you that that that that job or or Reek would
(56:40):
have done a better job. But you got Pritchard who
barely gets a jam on him. Now they're they're doing
What's If I was talking to Steve Spurriy right now,
I'd say Mills concept, which is a concept that a
terminology that he has a lot of the football has
has adopted. But it basically it's it's the number two receivers,
(57:00):
the slot receiver running running up on the safety and
then breaking in at an intermediate about twelve we'll just
call it twelve to fourteen yards, and then the post
in behind it. And by doing that with the slot receiver,
you get the safety to that side to bite. Now,
so they ran that concept, but I mean, Danny wolf
Will won a Heisman Trophy off of that concept. It's
(57:20):
been around a long time. It's been around since I
was playing. And now you got Kobe Bryant. He bites
hard on that slot. But because the backside split in
was doing a shallow cross. Then the safety to that
side doesn't have to help the corner, and that's Tayo
Kata and he again poaches, which means he pushes to
(57:43):
the three receiver side. And now, all of a sudden,
ian when you pause the tape on the end zone
copy of that touchdown the inside receiver, which who I
believe was Godwin, I'm certain was Godwin.
Speaker 3 (57:55):
He runs.
Speaker 5 (57:56):
He's got he's got Kobe Bryant converging from the top
down from the outside. He's got Ocada poaching from the
top down from the inside, and he's got Ernest Jones,
who had done a beautiful job of passing off the
flat over to em and Worry and then falling back
underneath the number two receiver. It was a triangle that
(58:16):
like like three guys within, they all could have touched
Godwin like triple covered perfectly. Problem with that is now
you got Pritchard, your second string wide receiver, who just
allowed an inside release barely hung him up. And he's
now got one on one and he I'm in his acceleration.
My kid threwed him for three years in seven on
(58:38):
seven around down in tournaments in Vegas and Orange County
and Atlanta and everything.
Speaker 3 (58:43):
I know a mecca really well. I know what his
acceleration looks like.
Speaker 5 (58:47):
And you allow him an inside release and you don't
lay a hand on him, He's gonna go, and he's
gonna go now. And he just gets up and he
just runs away from Pritchard and now Baker Mayfield. He's
having muscle memory. He's having muscle memory and doorphins because
he's like, damn, this is the same ball that I
(59:08):
striped against for against the Falcons to beat them, and
I'm gonna and he basically threw the exact same throat
at the same time to the same spot and the
mecha just just walked it right to him.
Speaker 2 (59:18):
Let me, let me correct Let me correct you on
one thing, ne and my uh he pretch its actually
the fifth string. Uh if you want to start counting
down the roster cornerback. Which goes back for our conversation
about Witherspoon and durability before.
Speaker 5 (59:30):
Yeah, all right, yeah, so that those are the type
of things that it's like, Okay, how are you trying
to compensate for your injuries?
Speaker 3 (59:37):
And then what is the defense trying to do to
to to gotcha.
Speaker 5 (59:41):
So when Mike McDonald uh stands there in the podium,
I've only talked about two plays. I've got a whole
I've got pages of notes that I could break down
like that. So Mike McDonald is smart enough to know, Hey,
you know what, I got pants today that give that
I didn't do my job. And you know what, he
he just his own his own personal integrity just compelled
(01:00:02):
him to say. And you know what, So does Sean
McVay look at the video Sean McVay uh on on
from Thursday night on that fourth down call. I even
videoed it to Sawn McVay. He steps up to the
first thing out of the mouse. He goes, he goes,
terrible call by me. I'm sick that I put my
players in a bad position. He goes, I've got to
(01:00:22):
live with that. Like we've got examples, cam or beautiful
example in his own way of just of showing his
team how that that winning and losing matters to him.
And he's like, he's like, I gotta be better, and
he cites like three different things that he did and
there was top of the list. He goes, we got
to be better, most especially me we got people that
(01:00:42):
are taking accountability and uh and Mike McDonald's won and
I'm damn glad he is. Like I said, I wish
it was coming from other areas. Let's just fix it
next week against Jacksonville. Here you're you're absolutely the best.
Speaker 3 (01:00:54):
This was a ton of fun.
Speaker 2 (01:00:55):
Uh and we appreciate it. And we will talk next
Monday after or a win at Jacksonville. Right, I love it, enjoy,
Thank you for Doddy. That is Hugh mil and the
great humail in hardcore football.
Speaker 3 (01:01:06):

Speaker 3 (01:01:33):
All right, here we go. Let's give you a quick
update on what's going on. Do Do Do Do Do do?
Mariners and Tigers still in a rain delay.
Speaker 2 (01:01:44):
The FS one, after an hour and a half of
filling time, has just gone to Game two of the ALCS.
Replay Police castile looking good early after lead off walk.
Speaker 3 (01:01:58):
Hey they none of the game. Let me give you
this day.
Speaker 2 (01:02:02):
No update on game time start none of the game
for today for the Marrions and Tigers will be shown
on FS one. It will all be on FS two
and MLB network, So plan accordingly, and it won't be starting.
Judging by the fact they just said, screw it, we
were going to replay of game two. I'm guessing it's
going to be a while, so we'll see what happens there. Soft,
(01:02:23):
you'll update you at three o'clock. Let's get to Factor fiction.
Speaker 3 (01:02:26):
Where's that to go? Glad you're with us?
Speaker 1 (01:02:28):
It's your shot at our weekly thousand bucks and the
ten thousand dollars grand price. It's Factor Fiction, probably presented
by Lucky Eagle Casino and Hotel where every day feels lucky.
Factor Fiction is on Sports Radio ninety three point three

Speaker 2 (01:02:48):
By the way, Levine guessing four fifteen when I just

well am four to fifteen there right now, So we'll see, yeah,
softing the Hawks coming up at three o'clock.
Speaker 3 (01:03:00):
Let's go to it.
Speaker 2 (01:03:01):
Factor fixtions right to you buy the Lucky Eagle Casino
and Hotel. Every day feels lucky. We're lucky to have
Andrews on the show, otherwise it'd be even worse than
it is.
Speaker 3 (01:03:09):
What do you got?
Speaker 4 (01:03:10):
All right? I'm looking through a lot of the games here.
I don't love a lot of these. But I'm gonna
go with a team that I think is better than
its record shows against a team that is I don't
think is as good as their record shows. I'm taking
the Arizona Cardinals plus six away at the Indianapolis Colts.
Speaker 3 (01:03:39):
Ian doesn't love it. He does not love it. Okay,
but listen, who am I to judge? Yeah?
Speaker 4 (01:03:49):
Who am I at all to judge? I'm points is
a lot. Sure, I think I'll stay close games. Danny Dimes,
pretty good.
Speaker 7 (01:03:59):
On.
Speaker 4 (01:04:01):
That's got to come crashing down at some point.
Speaker 3 (01:04:03):
Right, Danny Dimes, let's go. I don't know, all right?
So again, give me the give me again?
Speaker 4 (01:04:07):
Arizona plus six at Indianapolis, Arizona plus six Indianapolis. Okay,
fact four nine four or five one? Fiction four nine
four or five one?
Speaker 3 (01:04:20):
What are you doing?
Speaker 2 (01:04:21):
You're texting to win one thousand dollars weekly prize or
a ten thousand dollars grand prize. It's as simple as that,
really very simple. Do you want ten thousand dollars? Be
playing as much as you can twenty times a week
as well on most weeks. This week on Friday, we
won't have we only have two opportunities, I should point
out because we're off early. The Hawks take over pregame
for the Huskies and Rutgers. So eighteen times this week,
(01:04:42):
most weeks, twenty times. Text factor fiction to four nine
four five one. Very simple, very easy, very simple, very simple,
very easy. You hate to pick you takes fiction. There
you go, I hear, I know you know what it's
funny with you say that because I looked at that.
Actually I looked at that earlier this week, and I
thought about it and and I was actually thinking about
(01:05:04):
the other side. But but here's why I don't. I
don't hate it because I thought Kyler Kyler was hurt more.
Speaker 3 (01:05:13):
Than he is. So yeah, I don't, I don't hate it.
Don't hate it. Kyler's actually he came back in the game.
Speaker 4 (01:05:23):
So and also I just don't know.
Speaker 3 (01:05:25):
You're not believing it.
Speaker 4 (01:05:26):
You're not a believer in the Colts. I'm really not.
Speaker 2 (01:05:29):
You're on you're on team Sanchez. You're feeling bad for
Mark Sanchez. You're all against Indianapolis right.
Speaker 4 (01:05:33):
Now, that it is. Jeez, I don't know about that.
Speaker 2 (01:05:37):
By the way, I got an update forty uh one
on two away torkleson up against Castillo. Yeah, two away
one O pitch. Yeah, I like this just in case
you want to relive what happened on Sunday. That's a
bad sign, by the way, like when they're showing that game,
like they just said, we've got nothing else for an
hour and a half in Yeah, I'll Castillo paint in
(01:05:58):
the corner with the four seamer.
Speaker 3 (01:05:59):
Nice.
Speaker 4 (01:06:00):
Not a lot, not a lot of people are liking
my pick so far? What's the what's the approval?
Speaker 6 (01:06:03):
Right?
Speaker 4 (01:06:03):
I didn't look at the percentages, but just people texting
and reactions. Are you kidding me?
Speaker 3 (01:06:08):
And really?
Speaker 4 (01:06:09):
But then Keith two five three says if Ian hates
your pick, you're safer than being.
Speaker 2 (01:06:13):
Oh yeah, no, Keith is right. And if I'm not
mistaken three and two correct, that's correct?
Speaker 3 (01:06:18):
Okay?
Speaker 2 (01:06:19):
And I mean you're solid I arizonas that you have
to win this game, am I four and eleven?
Speaker 7 (01:06:24):
Yes?
Speaker 3 (01:06:26):
Wow, that's bad. Yeah.
Speaker 4 (01:06:28):
The combination of Ian, Jesman, Christopher, and Jackson are five
and twenty eight in Factor Fiction this year.
Speaker 2 (01:06:35):
Oh, okay, but two guys are two guys are over
they are kids, oh for nine and Jackson's oh for four.
I at least have four wins, you do. Yeah, she
can't hear.
Speaker 7 (01:06:45):
Us right now? Right?
Speaker 1 (01:06:46):
No?
Speaker 3 (01:06:46):
Yeah, well, let's be honest.
Speaker 2 (01:06:49):
One and four and I think all of her picks
we've gone. But really, I see she takes the Jets
all the time.
Speaker 4 (01:06:56):
Yeah, she does. She always takes the Jets or the Commanders.
Speaker 3 (01:06:59):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:07:00):
I like Dan Quinn and a gri up a Jets fan.
So it's yeah, don't pat with the heart. Torkleson gets
underneath it. Let's see Randy Camps underneath for those who'll
do it. You're wondering if wait, did the game start?
Speaker 4 (01:07:12):
No, Ian is played by playing the game that already happened,
because that is what's going on on f S one right.
Speaker 2 (01:07:18):
That steal gives up a lead off lock and nothing else.
We head to the bottom of the first No score,
all right, let's get to us Softie coming up next?
(01:07:38):
Well again, no score update to give you from the
Mariners and Tigers score updates. Yeah, no score update to
give you from Americas and Tigers. Game three the Alds
because the game is still in a rain delay. So
if you're just joining us and you're like, what the hell,
what's going on? Here's the way you can watch it
(01:08:00):
if and when it starts today? Is that it by
the way, that'll that will be it MLB network and
FS two will have it, or you can watch it
on the FS one app. And who doesn't have the
Fox Sports one app on their phone?
Speaker 9 (01:08:12):
Right?
Speaker 3 (01:08:12):
Doesn't everybody have that on their phone? I do, Okay,
then if I have it, then you better damn we'll
have it.
Speaker 2 (01:08:16):
Well listen, I mean we're all used to the FS one.
They probably have a truck race going on.
Speaker 3 (01:08:21):
What game was that for? The Hustle Stanford Friday? Friday night?
Friday night? We were down there at the game.
Speaker 9 (01:08:25):
I remember being with I was with Wilner actually we
were watching that thing, and I think I think Larry
Scott may have been at.
Speaker 3 (01:08:31):
The game, and everybody was livid, like, what the hell
is this?
Speaker 7 (01:08:35):
Man?
Speaker 9 (01:08:35):
Are you kidding me? This isn't even a real like
NASCAR race, truck race, a truck race, and you know what,
you know how mad I was.
Speaker 3 (01:08:42):
I was mad.
Speaker 9 (01:08:43):
I'm not even a Husky fan. Yeah, I was like,
can we watch the game. Probably had money on the
Cardinal that night. Because you're a degenerate.
Speaker 3 (01:08:48):
That's fine. I usually all know it. No, you know what,
I usually hatch. I usually got them husky.
Speaker 9 (01:08:53):
I've been losing money on the Apple Cup for years. Man,
I get it, and I totally get it.
Speaker 3 (01:08:57):
So what do you think? What are you hearing? Well?
What am I hearing?
Speaker 9 (01:09:00):
I'm hearing exactly what you're hearing that The next update
is going to come at about eleven minutes. I think
we we we have our update on the pole, we
have our update on the bet, we have our update
on the scoreboard.
Speaker 3 (01:09:13):
Now we need if we can, the four of.
Speaker 9 (01:09:16):
Us, Jess and Andrews feel free to be a part
of this update and update on the start time up
you're ready in three two and one up day on
the start time that was horrible, but that's what makes
it so great to save that for me?
Speaker 3 (01:09:29):
Will you by hey? I need that? So yeah, the
next update is gonna come at three o'clock. Get a
roof Detroit. Well that's what I said, man, get a
roof your goons for.
Speaker 9 (01:09:38):
Very nineteen seventy, like we across the river to Windsor
wins some money and buy a fricking roof the how's
going on here?
Speaker 2 (01:09:44):
By the way, every weather person was wrong, which just
makes right like everyone's ought to be done by two
o'clock rack till their time.
Speaker 9 (01:09:51):
I mean my questions are three and fourfold. Number one,
I want to know the latest the game can start tonight.
I think it's about nine o'clock nine thirty p is
the latest thing. I would go six correct. Number two.
If they don't play today, which feels like they will.
But if they don't, do they just squeeze games three
and four into tomorrow and the travel day Thursday, pop
(01:10:14):
back back Thursday night and play game five on Friday?
Speaker 7 (01:10:17):
Well?
Speaker 1 (01:10:17):
Just right?
Speaker 9 (01:10:19):
Is there any chance the game five would then be
on Saturday? And then I saw John Smoltz was talking
about this. Somebody put a tweet out. They made a
tweet from the tweeto with logan Gilbert Splitter and the
humidity out there, And if it does rain and they
play through some light rain, how does that impact him
and his deal?
Speaker 8 (01:10:37):
So?
Speaker 9 (01:10:37):
I don't know, man, I mean, you know as well
as I. Pitchers are creatures of effing habit, And when
you go to the park at a certain time and
you're expecting to come out at a certain time for
your bullpen, go out for first pitch, and all of
a sudden you're sitting around doing nothing. Uh, this could
throw a lot of people off. I would just say this.
My advice after this rain delay is bet the over.
Bet the over on the on the game. I think
(01:10:58):
it's seven and a half. I would I were going
to be I want to see some runs. We're going
to see some fireworks today. I have to add CA America.
I think the delay even adds to that even more
in my opinion. So they got well, and that's my
professional game advice. If I'm wrong, blamanders.
Speaker 3 (01:11:10):
Okay, and it's your fu. Well, you know here, here's
the thing.
Speaker 2 (01:11:14):
If if they play, and I think we all assume
they will, at least, it looks like they're waiting it out,
so they don't start and stop because we know how
this team handles that.
Speaker 9 (01:11:26):
Not well, like right, not well, well, I mean nobody
really handles that way. No, what's not the thing that
morning guys are talking about. You got Chuck on coming up, Yeah,
he'll join us.
Speaker 2 (01:11:34):
They talked about that this morning, and apparently there's some
numbers that say, like when Seattle has a delay awful
like worse than most teams.
Speaker 3 (01:11:40):
I'd like to know how.
Speaker 9 (01:11:41):
Those numbers compare though to the rest of base Then
that's what you asked, mister base And assuming that a
lot of teams happen, you have to ask mister baseball
at three acclaims that was a That was a full
segment of the morning show today, sir, that's tell you
right now.
Speaker 2 (01:11:56):
We just rip off everything they do. So if they're
not prepared, we're screwed. Ye just makes we air check
what they're doing. And I'll want to play again tomorrow
for game three if it's on time. So three purpose.
Speaker 3 (01:12:07):
So we got logs coming up? Are we doing? Yeah,
I gotta get some pepto bismo or so. What's wrong
with you? Are you stressed out? Are you stressed out?
The hell's wrong with this? What's wrong with you?
Speaker 7 (01:12:15):
Man?
Speaker 3 (01:12:15):
It's just a baseball just a baseball game. Come on, relax.
Speaker 9 (01:12:19):
That's what Josh Naylor said when he took off to
go back to Arizona. I know what's wrong with just
the baseball game. Hey, by the way, did she have
the baby?
Speaker 4 (01:12:26):
We don't know?
Speaker 3 (01:12:27):
Okay, all right? People seems like the kind of guy
that wants everything kept very so and right. Wilson was
asked that by he scared out of his money.
Speaker 2 (01:12:35):
Your friend Levine, he won't tell you anything, and he said,
I'll let Josh tell you what's going on.
Speaker 3 (01:12:39):
And no one has a you know, what to go
ask Josh Taylor would kick his ass. Are you kidding?
Speaker 7 (01:12:44):
Made?
Speaker 9 (01:12:45):
And I'll give you this purple sheet had a good point. Really,
I know, I know I was what's today's date? October seventh,
two thousand rate, But.
Speaker 3 (01:12:52):
I think it's I think it's it comes. It comes
from the world.
Speaker 2 (01:12:56):
It comes from the world of management. It's the old
hippolawe like he can't he can't say.
Speaker 3 (01:13:01):
I mean, come on, man, everybody knows for good. Do
you think he just bailed on her.
Speaker 9 (01:13:04):
I think he just said, look, babe, you got about
four hours and daddy's out of here. Yeah, all right,
I got a leer jet waiting for me. It's costing
me fifteen thousand bucks an hour. I'm not waiting all
day for your pain.
Speaker 4 (01:13:14):
Yeah, okay.
Speaker 3 (01:13:15):
First of all, if he had to pay for his
own jet, Mariners the Mariners.
Speaker 9 (01:13:21):
The Mariners didn't even give out forty seven thousand rally
towels for games one two.
Speaker 3 (01:13:27):
I don't care. I was going to ask you about that.
Speaker 9 (01:13:29):
What was the deal they didn't give him, gave like
twenty twenty thousand people. Yes, and they were the wrong color.
They should have been yellow because you can't see blue
in the stands. Oh yeah, I thought you knew this already.
Speaker 3 (01:13:40):
I did not know that. Oh my god, a man,
you know what, Oh my god, you're so cheap. We
don't like change. I'm sure they'll sign nailor to what
he's worth. We don't like change, and this is just
sticking with a status quo. So I appreciate you know what.
Speaker 9 (01:13:54):
I like wait and rely on a certain number of things,
and that's one of you know what, stay on brand,
that's what.
Speaker 3 (01:13:59):
That's brand. That's what I'm talking. A way to game
we could use you.
Speaker 2 (01:14:05):
You're paying for your own flight, even though there's forty
seven thousand people standing in the concession lines on Sunday.
Speaker 3 (01:14:11):
We're gonna have it.
Speaker 9 (01:14:11):
Is so typical Mariners that before the biggest game of
the year, we find a way to bust their bulls.
Speaker 3 (01:14:17):
It's right, I mean, that's it's unfortunate, but you know,
we are got Nico from Como. What do you say?
The rain has stopped in the Troit but no moving
from the ground. Screw nobody go from.
Speaker 9 (01:14:28):
Como, whose last name nobody knows how to pronounce, says
the rain has stopped in k America. So uh, you
got it, you gotta get you got the show coming up.
We're gonna stand join it from Detroit.
Speaker 6 (01:14:40):
He will.
Speaker 9 (01:14:40):
I think Larry Stone might jump on as well, if
we can squeeze him in before the game. And then, please,
for the love of God, stay with us after first pitch,
and we might give away like a prize or something.
Speaker 4 (01:14:50):
Husky Hanks cracking tickets. It is crack.
Speaker 3 (01:14:52):
We we got that. We got Husky Hanks. We got
John Wilner.
Speaker 9 (01:14:55):
That sounded terrible, by the way, terrible Brian Schmitzer may
hop on.
Speaker 3 (01:14:59):
His way so they were not in a hurry.
Speaker 4 (01:15:01):
By the way, man, just so you're not
Speaker 3 (01:15:04):
For the mild mannered and marginally objectionable Inverness, this is
paddle day saying so long everyone
