Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is iHeartRadio's Maryland Business Spotlight, presented by Rosedale Bank.
Each week we hear from one local business owner letting
us know where they are in their business journey and
how they got there. I'm here today with Joe Aayler,
President and CEO of tar Heel Construction Group LLC. Joe, Welcome,
thanks for being here. Tell us a little bit about
your company.

Speaker 2 (00:19):
Tar Heel Construction Group. We are a local award winning
residential and commercial roofing and exteriors contractor, proudly serving the
Baltimore area for over twelve years, and we focus on roofing, siding,
gutter and solar installations with a promise to make a
positive impact in the communities we serve while offering exceptional

(00:43):
services in roofing and exteriors. We do the small repairs
right whether it's the three hundred dollars repair, all the
way up to the three million dollar commercial roofing system
and everything in between. And we also specialize in in
retail transactions and insurance driven transacts as well.

Speaker 1 (01:01):
Where would you say the bulk of your business comes from?
You seem to do everything. Actually, what's the what's the
major part?

Speaker 3 (01:08):
What do you think.

Speaker 2 (01:10):
I mean, we're we're largely known for our roofing installations
for sure.

Speaker 1 (01:13):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, And I understand that you actually when
you were in college, did you go for like a
medical degree or something.

Speaker 3 (01:21):
How did that happen?

Speaker 2 (01:23):
Yeah, you know, it's a bit of a long story,
but for the sake of the of the podcast, I'll
try to I'll try to minimize a little bit. But okay,
I mean, I've got a degree in science from a
local university here on the Eastern Shore, Saltberry. And and
you spent some time at the Johns Hopkins University at
a medical research facility for a couple of years, participating

(01:44):
in als or lou Grigg's disease medical research and and yeah, man,
you know, I you know, kind of life intervenes, and
I was just kind of driven in a different direction
and kind of moved back up to my home Harford
County and called a good friend of mine from from
high school, and I said, hey, you know, I'm not

(02:06):
I'm not doing the science thing anymore. I need some money, dude,
I'm broke. Man, what are you doing for work? You know,
I got some bills I got to pay. And he says, Joe,
I'm yeah, I know, we haven't talked for a couple
of years. But I'm working for a roofing company and
you can start on Monday. I talked to the owner.
You can start on Monday. You'll be picking up shingle
trash and and that's how I got introduced to roofing.

Speaker 1 (02:30):
Wow, that's amazing. There was no background, like your family
wasn't into it. You went from an interest in the
medical field to roofing, starting at the bottom with your
buddy and then just growing from there and and starting
your own company.

Speaker 3 (02:43):
Basically, is that the short of it.

Speaker 2 (02:46):
That's right. You know, years ago, you know, when we
were when we were installing roofs, so you know, I
thought to myself, hey, we're you know, how could a
roofer make a positive impact in in someone's life, you know,
because you're you're in your want easier roof and and
you know, typically it's perceived as kind of one of
these trickle down kind of trades where you couldn't figure

(03:07):
out anything to do, you know, so you kind of
you know, they say that, you know, you don't choose roofing,
roofing chooses you. But here, you know, after a bit
of crystallized intelligence and some wisdom kind of you know,
uh is some wisdom, right, you know, you know, growing
through life. You know, now we're now we realize that
we're you know, we have been able to make a

(03:28):
positive impact in the community by you know, being customer
focused and philanthropically kind of driven and and have come
to realize that, you know, we're putting a roof on
someone's home. You know, there there a lot of times
their biggest investment and their shape of space. And we've
learned to take that very seriously over the years. And

(03:50):
you know, I've made a positive impact in the community,
right and uh and continue to do so.

Speaker 3 (03:54):
Yeah, now you should be proud of that.

Speaker 1 (03:56):
I want to talk more about the philanthropic part, but
just can you tell me how you because I'm always
fascinated to people who start a career in something, start
from the bottom and not only succeed at doing that,
but then decide, you know what, I'm going to start
my own company that that's a big leap for me.

(04:16):
That is a big risk in whatever industry you are in.
So was that daunting in the beginning or was it?
Did it just like steamroll and it was just somehow
it worked out with your skills and luck and.

Speaker 3 (04:29):
All of that.

Speaker 2 (04:31):
Yeah, I think it's a it's a combination of everything, right,
I think you know, I had a light bulb moment. Right.
We were a subcontractor. Right. Subcontractors typically are hired by contractors. Right.
Subcontractors never get the credit. The contractor gets the credit.
So after spending six seven eight years on the roof,

(04:52):
you know, getting up into my you know, my late twenties,
you know, you know, meeting my wife, you know, yeah,
getting ready to have our son, you know, and and
sweating on a roof one day, and then we you know,
we took a job from a young contractor that had
decided to take that leap and make a name for himself.
And you know, I look over at my at my

(05:14):
partner at the time, and I said, well are we
who are we working for? Today? A young kid comes
up on the job, and you know, I'm thinking to myself, Man, dude,
I've been on this roof for seven eight years. I'm
institutionally educated, I'm smart, I'm driven, I've got a growing family.
I want more for myself. Right, It's an innate desire,
right to have that A lot of us have that.

(05:36):
You know that it's just human nature to want to
drive and be better and get better and want more
for ourselves and our families. And that was my light
bulb moment. You know, the young person, the young contractor
you know, came up on the job and right there,
I said, Man, if that guy can do it, I
know that I can do it. I'm tired of my
hard work crediting other contractors. I'm ready to take the

(05:59):
lead and make a name for myself. And that was
in twenty twelve when tar Hill Construction Group was born
with one job that we made five thousand dollars on
and now you know, fifteen thousand happy customers later and
almost twenty million dollars in revenue a year. You know,
it's about you know, swift decision making. It's about you know,

(06:22):
you know, trust and accountability and transparency and doing good
work and all these core values that you kind of
start to appreciate later in your career but are kind
of over you know, overlooked, you know, or early on.

Speaker 1 (06:36):
That's pretty awesome, man. I love that determination and I
love that attitude. Has a great answer, and you guys,
tar Hill has earned an a plus rating from the.

Speaker 3 (06:46):
Better Business Bureau, which is pretty awesome.

Speaker 1 (06:49):
But you guys are also known for placing, like you said,
an emphasis on community involvement.

Speaker 3 (06:55):
Tell me about that.

Speaker 1 (06:56):
Tell me about some of the organizations that your companies
and because you're not just a business, you're part of
the community.

Speaker 2 (07:05):
That's right. I mean, you know you mentioned the Greater
Greater Maryland Better Business Bureau. Well, I sit on the
foundation board of directors for the Greater Maryland Better Business
Bureau because early on I thought to myself, well, you know,
what's the best way to get the community to trust
my company?

Speaker 3 (07:22):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (07:23):
Yeah, how about I seek out the BBB right, not
only to become accredited, but can I get involved with
the organization? How can I how can I participate? Right?
So I was lucky enough to be invited to be
a board member. And you know, I also sit on
the Greater bel Air Community Foundation board as the grants
Committee chair and the vice chair of that that foundation.

(07:43):
And I also I'm also a board member of the
Community Foundation of Hartford County as well. So get getting
involved with local philanthropic organizations, I say, you know, it
is one kind of piece of the puzzle. But then also,
you know, donating your time, you know, whether it's you know,
to the nonprofit community. We like to give away free
roofs or free roof service and maintenance, kind of agreements

(08:06):
with with local nonprofits, supporting youth sports programs, teams, you know,
local community events, you know, whether it's the Fourth of
July parade or Christmas Parade or or local downtown First
Friday celebration, and what we're sponsoring, we're attending just being
a vibrant part of the business community by this active

(08:30):
and active participation. Right. Yeah, there's there's so many local
networking events or you know, lunch and learns, mix and mingles.
There's so many opportunities to just involve yourself in the
local community. And you just have to be aware and
just be ambitious and and it also takes consistency and

(08:53):
time to to build a brand. But you've got to
be invested in your local community because that that creates,
that creates likability and trust, right you know, And we're
in the big we're a for profit construction company. We're
doing this to make money, right, but the more money
that our company makes and the more revenue we generate,
we we donate back to the community, right, because one,

(09:17):
it makes us feel good. Number two, you know, it's
brand awareness.

Speaker 3 (09:20):
Right.

Speaker 2 (09:21):
We want to be recognized as a as a community
focused and customer driven company, right, and we do that
by staying involved with the community, right and doing these
kind of initiatives helps our brand awareness. It makes us likable,
right and and and they trust us right and and
we know through sales that people buy from, you know,

(09:41):
companies they know like and trust you know. But the
secret is we're we're in it to make money. But
the more money we make, the more money we give back.
The more money we give back, the more likable and
trustworthy we are. The more likable and trustworthy we are.
The more root day buy, the more route day buy,
the more money we make, the more money money we make,
the more money we give that's right, trust, more likability,

(10:02):
It's like it's like a healthy cycle. And and and
the icing on the cake is that we're able to
influence other companies to do the same, which creates this
kind of harmonious, vibrant kind of business community up here
in Hartford County.

Speaker 3 (10:17):
Well said man.

Speaker 1 (10:18):
And when you look ahead five years down the road,
you guys are doing fantastic already. And if the answer
is we're just going to keep doing what we're doing, where.

Speaker 3 (10:27):
Do you see the future of Tar Hill construction.

Speaker 2 (10:31):
You know, we just want to continue to be a
trustworthy contracting source for for homeowners in this kind of
Baltimore metropolitan area, right, and we want to be able
to influence other, you know, businesses that you know, what
we believe is responsible business ownership. But you know, as
far as the future plans of tar Heel upward trajectory,

(10:53):
debty and tactical and strategic growth and you know, behavior
always precede success.

Speaker 3 (11:02):
Yeah, So we're in the.

Speaker 2 (11:03):
Business of if I behave in such a way with
quality workmanship, trustworthiness, responsiveness, accountability, We're going to climb that
mountain with with those kind of behaviors on our back.
And then we're going to just climb and climb and climb,
and one day we're just going to look back and
we're going to say, man, look how far we got.
We're not going to focus on the destination so much.

(11:26):
We're going to focus on the journey, and the behavior
and the characteristics and values are kind of going to
be our baggage as we climb.

Speaker 3 (11:32):
Yeah, I believe it. I believe it.

Speaker 1 (11:34):
