In this mini-episode, we share are thoughts and experiences with lifting in home gyms versus commercial gyms. The pandemic forced a lot of people into home gym situations. Some people hated it, while others joined the ranks of long-time home gym lovers. What’s missing when you lift at home? And what makes it better than lifting away from home?

Yeah, just wiggle that in there. Fitness has changed over the years,
but especially around COVID, I feellike fitness has evolved, and as
we all know, the price gougingwent ape shit and most people just started
to buy weights to sell them againon Craigslist. But there's also many of
folk that built a home gym.I think we're the only home gym guy

as right now, here's you.Yeah, I'm also out in the you
know, far away from any gym. Yeah, it makes sense. So
obviously there's sometimes there was a necessityto have a home gym, but it
was also just a necessity during COVID. What are the pros? Do you
like home gyms? Do you likea home gym? I've basically owned my
own gym, which was a homegym in two thousand and nine that I

trained people out of, and Itrained by myself. But what do we
think about home gyms. I'm actuallythe more I get older, the more
I'm against them. Uh yeah,I'll go. I honestly don't prefer them
whatsoever. Yes, I have one, of course, but like because you
just said that, but like Idon't like it. But it's that or

nothing. You got a kid,I got a kid. You live in
the middle of nowhere. I livepretty far. The gym option that is
close to me down the road isliterally like a glorified hotel gym. I'm
talking about a liptical maybe a pulldown bar and like some fourteen pound dubs.
Know what I'm saying. Your wifelike trains, trains, like she's
a lifter. Yeah she doesn't.She likes to go have she's not a

cardio bunny. No. Yeah,well yeah, we kind of we kind
of turned into that. It's like, how can I get the most bang
for my how to lift? Likeher, her idea of fitness isn't pilates,
no, no, no, nono, she's like lifts, trains,
she trains, She's in the game. Are you're right? You're right?
Yeah, my bad. But yeah, I'm trying to show her some
love and you're beating her down her. So yeah, I think that being

in a gym, being around otherpeople in a gym is important to training
as far as like even just likehonestly being around people, being motivated from
your friends or from strangers, andjust like having conversations with new people.
Yeah, and also just like whenyou're in the gym and it's in your
house, it's like a lot easierto just lay off when you're at a
gym in an environment I'm here todo some work. I'm here to get

in and get out and like workhard. That's it's really easy to fuck
that off at home gym. That'spart of the issue of owning a gym,
as you don't get in that samemindset. My favorite thing of going
to the gym used to be themindset where I'd have like a routine.
I'd eat lunch at eleven, thenat noon, I'm taking my caffeine and
then and then I'm listening to musicfor half an hour to get to the
gym, and then it's going togo. It's all set, it is,
and routine is everything. But nowyou own a gym and you work

in a gym, you don't getthat routine because I'm here for three hours,
four hours, then I got atrain, then I don't got a
train, then I well it basicallyit turns into basically a home gym,
yeah, without a bust or abad Yeah. Me and Jim over the
years have talked to many lifters,and I actually have changed my opinion Jim,
maybe yours has it. But Iused to talk a lot about lifters
being able to be at the highestlevel regardless of whether they train alone or

not, because back in the day, there wasn't powerlifting gyms, so most
people did kind of train in theirgarage or totally by themselves, are with
like two guys. But now everyguy I know that's absolutely dominating the sport,
pure power lifting or even strong man, they have a crew around them.
They should have a study for thator something. Yeah. Good,
But home gym guys or indeed breakingrecords and ship desides the online competitions,

even that. Dan Green used tobe one that we'd point out to or
Mike to Sheer or whatever. Miketo Sheer I think is pure necessity and
he's a different animal in his brain. Dan Green, I think was only
before he opened his gym, andnow he has a bunch of people around
him, you know, like there'snot a lot of people. Bryce Lewis
trains with a bunch of people.Jamal Browner, a bunch of people,
Bilbo swagons, John Hacks training witha bunch of people, like everyone's around

Bilbo swagons of all time, ofall time. We could and we could
even pivot towards you, like justfrom a cultural standpoint too. Yeah,
Like I grew up. I meanI think Mike did too. Like my
dad was a gym rat, likejust all he did, Like he played
football for UNLV's a big old dn guy. I remember just going in
there and be like, all right, you're gonna be up there for like
fucking three hours, have fun.And I'm just like and I'll just look

out the window and I see allthese macho, huge dudes like Chris Dim
like he's one of whose friends withhim and stuff like that, Like just
bodybuilders, just not really powerlifters asmuch. Obviously. It's like kind of
it was all kind of the samethen, yeah, yeah, it didn't
just heavy. Yeah. My firststrength and conditioning coach for the world in
eighth grade, really good guy,turned with a bunch of football players.
I shout him out all the time. Was best friends with Kyle's dad,

which I didn't know. And sothe gym that all the world, Yeah,
the gym I grew up in waswork. Kyle's dad also trained.
Yeah, and it's it's funny.It's as close to Gold's Gym Venice as
you could get it. It reallywas. It was nuts, dude.
Everyone's stringers, everyone's skin is leatherybrown, everyone's jacked. Every single person
in there was jacked out of ahuge dude. It looked like I hopped

(06:15):
into fucking pumping iron. Yeah,it was. It's really cool. It
was my coach, I think,was the only one. I didn't remember.
Dad because I was younger and homeous, he didn't know. But my
coach was the only dude. Wewore a hoodie all the time. It'd
be one hundred degrees out and soI never knew. But sometimes I fuck
with them, you know, andbe like, oh, You're like,
oh, get the meat. Slappingthat meat a little bit with them,
Then you're like, oh, man, yeah, I think the Yeah,

the home gym culture, I mean, I mean, it's not really a
culture, but I mean I thinkthey did it. It kind of.
I think it's turning into that alittle bit. I'm starting to see it.
It's almost becoming like a like akind of CrossFit mentality almost like,
oh, I have a home gym. Two, you have a home,
how is it? Like, Idon't, I don't know how the conversations
I think COVID. Even our buddyBrandon Campbell popped off. His video started
to pop off. There's some peoplethat do equipment reviews on YouTube start to

pop off during COVID. But Brandon, I obviously I don't want to speak
for him. He's a long timefriend, but his seems out of necessity
too. Yeah. Kids, Ithink his issue is it's totally necessity and
he kind of listen what Rhode Island. Yeah, yeah, you got kids,
you got a wife, the olderyou get. But but I even
think that's more of an argument totry to get out when you can.
Yeah, like you said, thecultural, the community, be a friend
to somebody. It'd probably be easyto get sucked in and just stay there.

You know. I would never leavemy house if someone had If there
was a if there was like agym in my neighborhood, like i'd like
the clubhouse or whatever, Like Iwould go to that for one hundred percent.
It could be kind of ship andyou would still go. I would
probably still be fine because if yousee your friends are to other people there,
I woul one hundred percent and noteven a mess with the home gym.
But it's like like the thirty minutecommute to like the nearest gym,

that's just not an option because thenit turns an hour work out into it
and I and I got literally liketwenty five to thirty minutes to work out
normally anyway. So it's like,I actually, excuse me me to rephrase
that that I want to dedicate toworking out because like, honestly, I'd
rather spend that time hanging out withmy son and like he's working out when
I can, you know what Imean. It's not like a huge priority
at this point in my life.But I do notice that the CrossFit scene

really blew up in the home gymwork. It's always been big, yeah,
but like post COVID, like duringCOVID, like the CrossFit people really
a lot of people stayed home withthe gyms and never really went back.
But also like a big percentage wentback with also they didn't because I would
I almost think the opposite of myhead looking at it, you know what
I mean, because they're there there. Their whole thing is community and that's

what CrossFit has done so well overthe years, and and their exercise stuff
is so varied, Like if you'reat home, you get a barbell on
a jump rope, and then allof a sudden, you got wall balls,
so you can go buy a medicinebowl tomorrow. And then all of
a sudden, you got you knowthis and that, and like, all
right, well, I gotta goget this. I gotta get a baseball
because I gotta toss it down theroad. I saw this YouTube video,
this guy's doing this. I gottabuy this ship because then you need a

kettle bell. Then you need aCrossFit has done something, so they're more
basic than a commercial gym, butthey're way more complicated than strength training.
Yeah. Yeah, I basically doglorified CrossFit without much bar bell workouts.
Yeah, like I do. LikeI still do a lot of strength stuff
like squatting and like strict pull ups, and I have like a rack and
stuff, so I'm still getting inlike the strength working. I can do

(09:09):
deadlips and stuff like that, butas far as like the Olympic lifts,
I've kind of like removed that fromthe CrossFit side of my training and just
doing like make sure I'm working onstrength and some kind of medic ball conditioner
or just broady body bro out forthe day. Feeling its maintenance Orange theory
and five. And that's whether arguablymaking more money they killing. My feeling
is this, though, Trade yourhome gym for a gym home. Go

(09:33):
someplace where you feel comfortable, breakyour routine. Like Mike was saying,
I had when I had little kids, I had home gym stuff, and
I only worked out after they wentto bed, and and that's when I
had time for it because I wasworking, Like don't have kids. Well
from the show, it's hard.It's really hard to make. Yeah,
my neighbor across the street, youknow, he's a former CrossFit. You

know, guy, he's an attorney, his wife's an attorney. They have
three kids, and he works outin his cross because that's really what he
gets time for. You know,I totally understand that. But I think
that what I miss most about theold days was, you know, when
you were lifting multiply, you hadto have people around you. You just
couldn't do it. You couldn't getinto your ship, you couldn't get out
of it. Certainly forced people suitsagain I'm not saying that necessarily, but

like the whole idea of the tea, yeah, to force the team.
And really I thought that's what madethe videos that I did back then,
is the fact that you're watching awhole team together and a kind of with
the other way. Yeah, Igot my sleeves. I don't really need
a spotter because I'm working on OURPP. People love seeing people in groups.
Man. I think there's a communityand team has been a thing and it

(10:41):
will always be. Think tribes willalways be a thing because like you put
your team like that, you knowwhat I mean. You see you see
Mike, Jim and some other guys, You're like, oh, okay,
I got my boy. Here,got my boy here, they're gonna go.
I'm like, oh, this issick. It's like me and it's
like me and my boys. Youknow. Yeah, you know how much
you need to help or how muchit helped you, so you're more willing
to help the other people. Likeit would be great if everyone was selfless
and just wanted to spot load andhelp. But until you need help,
sometimes humans won't be as nice andhelp others, you know what I mean.

That's absolutely true. If You'll havehad a flat tire and I couldn't
do that thing, and then Ifigure out how to do it. I'm
way more likely to help someone else'sflat tire. Well, I have to
tell you too that if you weresomebody who went who came in expecting to
get help and you hadn't helped otherpeople. Yeah, yeah, So back
to real quick. There's that balancetoo, right where like you're like talking
about Kelsey and what she does islike two three days at home during the

week, Saturdays, that's her dayshe goes down to the gym. She
makes that drive and make sure thatshe gets in that group environment at least
once a week. Yeah, andthat's I think she probably loves Saturdays.
Oh, it's like yeah, ofcourse, Like she's around her friends.
They're training like for two hours,like hardcore with the group, and it's
like, yeah, so there isthat she's done a better job at like

still involving that. But she knowshow important that is because like she works
out that's probably in that two hours, because that's all she could probably do
and still be in good shape becauseof how hard they work together in the
gym. I also wonder if we'rejust spoiled being in California. You know
about like Nebraska's garage gym scenes alittle different. Yeah, when it's like
minus forty and you're trying to likebuild a rack squad, now they build

a room. I don't know thetrue Tom Callous, I mean that's a
garage, right, I mean that'strue yells. Yeah, he's one of
those like one percenters with that andlike Indian Wilson, right, you know,
back the gym's pointed about going toa gym. Unrelated completely, we
happened to open a new gym inSacramento. Did you know that here?
