Prompted by a Reddit question, we talked through the impact of reducing attempts from three attempts per lift to two attempts per lift. Would meets move faster? Would warmup rooms be chaos?

We also compared the top 10 Canadian athletes and the top 10 Texan athletes. Can one state beat a whole country?

Sebastian Brambila (@sebastian_brambila) ran the board and chimed in on this one.

(00:10):
Welcome, ladies and gentlemen to apowerlifting talk show that we'll probably talk about
powerlifting today. Maybe, Yeah, there's things moving. We're going to like
graze the edge of it. Idon't know. I got a couple of
things. Okay, Oh good, good, good, because I came in
with nothing and I found this onething. So we'll lead with yours maybe
and then I'll lead with mine. But some of the things are you know,

(00:32):
people always talk about it, andI wonder about weightlifting or even other
sports, like what the internal talkis about growing the sport, and then
like why do you want to growit? Like what's the end goal?
What's yeah? Is it money? Is it to make pro athletes? Is
it the Olympics? And I wonderif that's a reason maybe why weightlifting doesn't
necessarily seem to try to grow becauseit's kind of already on the biggest stage.

(00:55):
And although it's not, you know, the richest sport, which we
talked about another episode, like goldmedals and what they get paid or stipends
per country, other countries probably makea full time living and celebrityhood doing some
other more obscure supports in America, but power of the thing. It seems
like a lot of people wanted togrow. We've had multiple guests on and

(01:19):
had this as a topic. Theyeither want the Olympics or yeah, maybe
they want the athletes to be ableto make a full time living, which
I think is kind of silly insome sense because then it gets into a
deeper like w NBA versus NBA talkor whatever, where like if the demand
of sponsorship and viewership is just nevergoing to be there, Yeah, te

(01:40):
NBA, NFL, MLB, Yeah, even soccer, all those started off
with people having regular jobs. Yeah, that's season true, I think,
even as it couldn't as like theseventies eighties. Yeah, there's like stories
of I forgot who I think there'sa fullback or somebody in the in the
NFL that was like still like alawyer or something or UFC YEA steep A

(02:04):
was the World heavyweight champion and stillworking a fireman job and that was like
five years ago, Yeah, whichis insane, and he probably made enough
money doing both. Yeah, itis interesting. It is interesting because to
me, the ultimate goal and Idon't know if the Olympics should be the
ultimate goal either, Like what makesthat so cool? I think it's increasingly

(02:24):
less cool. Yeah, over time, And if you look at other sports,
like they don't care. No,like for soccer. The World Cup's
way cooler for football obviously the SuperBowl for basketball. Still, if you're
not winning an NBA championship, noone really cares, right right, Like
there's an ego involved and there's anation pride, and I think that's cool.
But the Olympics are just far tooexpensive. I mean, it's difficult

(02:47):
to make money hosting an Olympics becauseof the infrastructure you have to build.
At least we're gonna get trains forit at Vegas everywhere, oh everywhere.
Yeah, they're doing not Amtrak, but what's the other company out here,
Pacific Railway. They're trying to getus from Sack to the bullet train in

(03:08):
middle of nowhere wherever it is.Modesto or first said, Yeah, so
they're trying to connect those, whichis kind of cool. At least we'll
be able to get to La bytrain and in seventy percent of a B
bullety. Then they're going San Diegoto Seattle for it. And I think
that's all Olympics and World Cup actually, speaking of bullet trains. I saw
a video from the UK. Itwasn't even a bullet training, It was

(03:30):
just a train going fast and youreally have to stay if you're on the
platform, you have to really stayfar away from the track because the wind.
Yeah, it'll it creates a vacuumbehind it, it will suck you
towards the rails. So I justsaw like an Instagram post and it kind
of made it like condescending towards Americans, And it was probably an American posting

(03:53):
it, like Japan actually cares abouttheir people or something, because they drop
a gate when before the train takesoff, like a huge roped gate from
the platform to the train. Butit's probably for that reason, Yeah,
because they have the bullet trains whereour trains don't go fast and they accelerate
slow. So who gives a shit? Yeah, you know, it's not

(04:15):
that we don't like, just beable to still get pushed right, Just
don't be dumb enough to jump outthere or drop your cell phone or some
shit. You always hear videos.I think the bigger news for powerlifting is
one we talked about it. PowerliftingAmerica or IPF, whichever one it is,
got that contract with CBS, ESPNgroup or ABC NBC group which is
obviously huge, and they're going tocover a bunch of things. And again,

(04:40):
who knows what the end goal isof any powerlifter wanting to do things,
But I think like just even pushingthe exposure level is should be the
ultimate goal, right to get morepeople involved with the sport that you supposedly
love or care about or want todo, and then where it goes.
It's kind of like creating content orcreating anything is like where it goes the

(05:01):
world decides. You don't decide, you know, like you can't say,
like Olympics is a goal, orlet's get all their athletes to get paid
two hundred k, Like, well, that's a cool goal. But let's
build like foundational things that make itcool, expose more people to it,
and then they decide if they wantto get involved. Right, But the
biggest one, and I think thisis probably and I'm a hater, I'm
a natural born hater. I thinkprobably the coolest move I've seen for powerlifting,

(05:29):
Powerlifting America has partnered with the UFCand they're hosting meets under the UFC
Fight Pass, And I'm not sure, don't quote me. I think it's
said June twenty eighth. Already they'rehaving a meet. Their nationalist is coming
up, right, isn't it.I think no just passed IPF World's coming
up, however, and I'm notsure if it's the same week. But

(05:51):
UFC has been doing it for probablyten years now, eight years UFC International
Fight Week, where they have ahuge week of expos and different things,
but them accumulating jiu jitsu, whichis huge. We've had Buddies fight on
that, which ends up on UFCeither pay per view or their fight Pass.
Obviously, the power Slap is thesame idea, and now it seems

(06:14):
like they've added some kind of contractwith Powerlifting America to the same interesting.
Yeah, yeah, and so Idon't know exactly the detailed details. It
was posted yesterday and announced yesterday byPowerlifting America. But I think it's cool.
I'm definitely gonna go. It's inVegas. Bart's even I don't know
if I can leak that. Bart'stalk about going with me, and so

(06:34):
we'll see. Yeah, I don'tthink it's a qualifier for anything. I
don't know. There might be moneyon the line for it. I forgot
what the exact details were. Butif it's International Fight Week, I think
that all just makes so much backend business sense, front end marketing sense,
like the demographic in the arm wrestlingworld, powerlifting strong man. Like

(06:56):
if I'm a UFC, I'm tappinginto strong man somehow, I'm hiring someone
to do some shit, and youget all these kind of like many hobby
leagues underneath the big UFC one.But there's different ways you can you know,
co market and co brand in betweenthose things. It seems like a
no brainer. You know, we'vetalked about in the past where does powerlifting
belong? And we've mentioned X Gamesover our many years of podcasting, or

(07:21):
or Olympics or WWE. You know, there's there's these niche like worlds that
powerlifting is more popular now, butit is kind of a sport for misfits
and it's not you know, themain three American sports. So yeah,
how do you fit that in togain some traction and like minded folks?

(07:42):
And I think that's the world.Like power slap is interesting because it's the
opposite of powerlifting, right in thesense that everyone watching is not participating and
or one hopes, right at leastninety nine percent, like where powerlifting is
probably you know, ninety ten theother way again, in person's a little
different because you're gonna have families andfriends interested in Johnny in college competing,

(08:05):
so they'll come support them. Butanyone watching any live stream of powerlifting or
interested in any meat is often apowerlifter themselves, so that's a little different.
Arm wrestling, i'd imagine is maybefifty to fifty just because it's kind
of unique. It's kind of coolbecause everyone knows what a arm wrestle is.
You've been doing it since first grade, so that's kind of unique.
And then power slaps obviously just likea shock factor, but no one's besides

(08:31):
like maybe some frat boys or something, or like trying it on the weekend
or something. You know, Yeah, I don't know, man, After
having dealt with this concussion situation, the idea of somebody slapping me, I
like that I would again knocked out. I would know. There's no fucking
way. There is not a wayon earth that I would do. The
rules are crazy because you're not allowedto flinch, Like there's a lot of

(08:54):
penalties and shit you get too forflinching. Is that that I think it's
like a point. Yeah you should, you should get a double hand.
Yeah, I think you get Ithink you three strikes. I don't know,
I've been watching it. I don'twatch anything not not not appeal to
me, but yeah, I knowthis, This concussion thing took a week
and a half for me to feellike normal again, your sensitive man.

(09:16):
And then the thing I didn't understandbefore, well, the list of things
I didn't understand before. I mean, I've gotten bunked a couple of times
before and it was never like thisis. For the first couple of days,
I was like euphoric, you knowhow like if you're if you get
sick and then you feel better,It's like, oh man, I feel
so much better. I'm practically euphoric. It was like that, It's like,

(09:37):
why is why am I feeling likethis? Like am I just like
is it a manifestation of me feelinglucky that it wasn't worse? Or what?
What the hell is it? AndI looked it up and honest to
god, that is a a sideeffect of concussion syndrome. Post concussion syndrome
is just feeling euphoric, and ithas something to do with the part of
your brain that's hit. So Ilooked up where I got where it was

(10:01):
hit in the parietal lobe, thepart that validates sensory experiences like somatics.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, it'slike, oh, and that's why I
felt so good. I injured thatpart of my brain. It's not acting
normally. Yeah yeah, I know. Dream state is pretty common. I've
felt similar after my concussions to golike a team dinner afterwards like we always

(10:22):
would any basketball game, and everythinglike felt like yeah, fuzzy, like
like a dream, like a dreamor a movie. Yeah. Yeah.
So this Powerlisting America thing, thesespecifics are introducing the Powerlisting America Ultimates Showdown,
Yeah, which some other series theyannounced too recently. That's I assume
to compete with the usapl Pro series. The first PA meet to receive a

(10:45):
signature sanction, that's what it is. That's the their pro that's supposed to
be their pregnature. Ultimates Showdown willbe held at the UFC International Fight Week
as part of the Ultimates Invitational tenativeschedule. The twenty eighth of June is
women's Open raw and equipped forty sevento sixty three kilos men's Open raw and

(11:07):
equipped fifty nine to eighty three kilosand June twenty ninth, Women's Open raw
sixty nine to eighty four plus men'sninety three to one twenty plus no qualifying
total required. Yeah, but itsays invitational, So I don't know if
those are literally invitational that or they'rejust setting up for next year. Because

(11:30):
obviously, like we went to KeikoClassic in Fresno and that was like a
forty lifter meet PA and they allsaid that was one of the biggest Powerlifting
America meets yet, So I thinkparticipation in the pool is just smaller for
now. But again, I thinkthis is one of the coolest at least
branding moves, early moves that powerlifting'sever done. And so if you wanna
up your participation, it seems likea no brainer. We've obviously seen a

(11:54):
very big shift to Powerlifting America asit is the path to the IPF just
this year. They've only been aroundthree or four years to begin with and
split with the USAPL. But itseems like whoever's in charge there, you
know, at least has some kindof marketing foresight that other people haven't had

(12:15):
and I'm honestly just impressed. Meand Bart were talking about this yesterday,
the fact that they could get anytype of stamp approval by the UFC or
partnership based on the participation numbers theyhave, which is nothing, based on
the dollar amount that they're worth, which is probably nothing based on only being
around three years. Like, it'ssuper impressive to me to get even that

(12:39):
conversation started, let alone complete it. So props whoever's leading this world.
I mean, it may turn outto be a shit show. Who knows,
right, The future is uncertain, but I think it'll be cool,
and I think the idea and thehandshake that made this happen is highly impressive.
The top twenty four lifters for eachday of the event will be chosen

(13:01):
to lift in the Signature sanctioned portionof the event, so essentially like a
prime time Yeah, which is cool. And who knows, right, next
year again, when the skill gapis there and they have more more members
in the federation in general, itmight be a full invite, right,
yeah, And I think that's probablywhere their signature series is going. But
that makes me want to compete, like, you know, like if you
want to compete somewhere. Yeah, you don't want to go compete at International

(13:24):
Fight Week in Las Vegas with theUFC and you're probably lifting in the MGM
or some shit like that's fucking cool, you know, like it finally made
it cool. Who's how Who's Who'snatser that weekend June twenty eighth, Yeah,
this is there's somebody. I haveno clue. I wish I could
get a refund from a certain nationalsthat that same weekend, somebody maybe USGA

(13:50):
or something. Maybe that's often inVegas. Yeah, yeah, I mean,
uh, USAPL September World it mightbe Worlds. I doubt they would
line that up, but Worlds isvery soon. Yeah. For IPF,
it might be June July. Andmy only connection to it is just watching
the lane and talk about it,talking about it. Yeah, were they

(14:11):
not Lithuania where they hited this year? Romania World? Yeah, I forgot,
it's somewhere what you said it wasa South Africa? No, No,
that was Masters Masters. Yeah, that's just Masters, So I don't
know where that is. And that'sdifferent time too, that's like in the
fall. Yeah, I think it'scool. Yeah, I don't know the
Worlds, but it's probably whatever. It's probably not. I didn't realize that

(14:35):
Parlotic America had hooked up with Alicoas well. Yeah, they ran their
nats out of there last year, out of Austin, Texas. I mean,
everyone runs with somebody, and Ithink it's probably the IPF connection.
Like the IPF probably runs with theLake. Yeah, I guess that makes
sense sense. Yeah, so theyprobably just funneled through there, whatever partnership

(14:56):
that means, like or yeah,it looks like what the UFC one means.
Maybe they're not even in the samelocation. They might be a gym
way off in the middle of nowhere, but yeah, chances I bet they're
in. The UFC is are oftenout of t Mobile, which is the
hockey arena, but hockey Hockey playoffsare over end of June, so yeah,
they might get to like compete inthere. Who knows, it doesn't

(15:20):
really say yeah, yeah, andwe are soonish, which is yeah,
a ton of info six weeks weeks. Yeah, I wonder how they choose
that invite. I guess it's justall the people. I mean, if
you didn't make Worlds and you're atop five guy in powerlifting America, Yeah,
even if you're not fully prepped, you're probably gonna say yes to this
problem, right, That's what meansthat Like to me, that makes it
seem so cool, Like no othersituation are you gonna just like drop a

(15:43):
training cycle and be like, yeah, we'll go compete. But this is
cool enough to do that, whichis a rare thing. Like all the
other big ones, the Rogue Invitationalon all this ship, the crossfig Games,
all these places could have adapted powerliftingor powerlifting could approach them and they
haven't. Like those are cool too, and AWE's done ship, So props
to them. I don't know whoit is. Me and Barbi we're talking

(16:03):
about. Bart in particular said itwould be interesting who's doing made this deal
and then who's gonna end up beingthe Dane White of powerlifting, because that
is really what they need. Youknow, powerlifting needs like a figurehead to
run this ship, like Kevin Faggyruns Marvel. Yeah, kind of like
you need you need a creative anda pusher that's gonna like make cool shit

(16:25):
happen. And so whoever made thishappen could be that guy. And they
don't necessarily have to be a publicfigure like Dana White. But yeah,
and the UFC's ownership, they're goingthrough some issues, not not the not
actually the fight portion BUTKO or whatever, but Endeavor they're the parent organization.

(16:48):
Yeah, it's two KO right.Yeah, they're settling off a bunch of
stuff because they're having profitability issues.Well, I mean they they took off
the they a big old pie issues. Yea. Not only did they did
they buy you know, UFC andand where they had they bought the company
that owned the UFC. They alsobought Wrestling w yeah w E, and

(17:15):
but from on that side of thehouse, but like on the representation side,
they bought a bunch of uh,smaller agencies. Yeah, those are
probably the ones failing because everything I'veread in UFC numbers are through the fucking
roof right now. Uh and sois w w E. Since the Rock
took Vince McMann out, Yeah,I mean he's gone, he's gone.

(17:40):
I don't think it was just theRock. I think that it was I
don't know, sexually appropriate stuff maybeinappropriate maybe, but I could kind of
see it happening anyways. Maybe becausethe Rocks, the Rocks, uh clout
and power was declining dev quickly yes, yeah, and now it's kind of
back ish. Yeah. Not onthe movie side though, yeah, maybe

(18:03):
not. I don't know. Idon't think he's ever going to recover on
the movie side less. Oh yeah, yeah, no, no, no,
I don't mean recover. You know, he's supposedly there's a UFC movie
happening or Pride, I guess, because he's playing Mark Kerr, I think
an upcoming film, which really soundsinteresting ish, that sounds like a role
that he's actually made for. Butwe shall see. We shall see International

(18:26):
Fight week folks. I don't knowthe UFC is that the McGregor fight,
because I was looking at tickets ofthat bitch, Holy shit, bro upper
deck fucking Mount Himalaya seats were threegrand good lord. Yeah. Yeah,
And I like UFC and I wouldlove to see you know, it's just

(18:47):
something cool about seeing like the greatsbefore they retire, you know, like
I'm glad I've seen Lebron play, and I'm glad I've seen all this shit.
I would love to see McGregor fight. But about all that, I
don't know if there's anything out paidjeez. Oh, so it is that
weekend, that's far. Yeah, that's sick. Will be a lot of
energy going on at least. Yeah, we'll be interesting to see what the

(19:08):
facilities look like. I don't knowT Mobiles on the strip like one hundred
yards off, and I don't knowwhat hotels are around. I think Caesars,
Where's What's it's right next to Italy, and I don't know what hotel
Italy's in, So maybe they'll doin one of the convention centers of the
hotels right next to T Mobile.I've never been into T Mobile, but

(19:29):
I assume they don't have a bunchof like expo rooms because it is just
an arena, and obviously they're gonnahave to have the Octagon ready for the
fights, so it's not like theycan just like shove it down there.
It seems like it's probably not inthe same facility, Yeah, but it
might be close. It might stillhave like some UFC branding or money behind
it, And same with the Expo. I haven't been to the Expo,
although I've thought about going, andI think that just takes up like a

(19:52):
whole portion of the fucking thing.Side news, I didn't know California state
legisl lative powers past like kind ofopen alcohol capabilities for districts. So basically,
I think the first move and I'veI've heard about it happening here.

(20:15):
I think we talked about the lightthe Beam district trying to do it where
they would shut off streets and makeit like a Bourbon street or a strip
type situation. I heard San Franciscois gonna be one of the first actually
put pen to paper and try tomake that happen. I forgot the street,
but kind of make their own likeBourbon Street, which is cool,
kind of interesting. I like that. I think that being in Ireland and

(20:41):
in England the first time years ago, like ten years ago or so,
people standing around outside bars drinking yeah, chilling, yeah. I mean you
get that here if you get areally chill dive bar and the security guard
is not like a yeah, butyeah, it's not a common I mean
that's what made vague is so coolto me as like a young twenty year

(21:02):
old, you just grab a beerand just like start walking. And then
then during the pandemic you could getlike takeaway cocktails. How crazy? Was
not? They and they they theyenshrined that that's still happening. Yeah,
you can still do that, true, but it's supposedly not supposed to drink
them. You're not supposed to drinkwhat's a brown bag law? Is that
a fake law? Is that evennot a law? I don't know in

(21:25):
terms of like drinking up your leglike drinking it, that's a good question.
I don't know. I think that'stechnically illegal, and it's just like
a like a side quest to makecops not come talk to you kind of
you potentially everybody. Everybody does it, yeah, and it's like a typical,
you know, kind of bum typemove. But yeah, people do
it, have like a forty ounceof a brown bag and they're drinking out
of it, Yeah, which justseems weird because then yeah, because open

(21:48):
alcohol is illegal, so I doubtthat makes it legal. But this legislation
will allow districts or like streets orblocks to do something like that, which
obviously I'm not actually a huge, you know, proponent of alcohol myself,
because I think it is not great. But yeah, I don't know,
it's never really been that great forme. But I just think in terms

(22:12):
of like environments and like economy andlike cool things to do, it kind
of adds a nice sparkle too.Yeah, arena situations or concert situations or
whatever it might be. Yeah,I have long since reached the point where
I understand, like, hey,it's a weekend, I'm gonna get drunk.

(22:33):
I don't get it. I don'tget that it's if folks are tired.
I think it's like, yeah,I was just it's like I want
to feel shit like shit for days. I think I'll get really really drunk.
So everyone, it's most it's mostof America. I don't get it,
understand. And I'm this is notlike a puritanical thing. This is
purely like what your body feel like. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I

(22:55):
mean I think the level of hangoversare We even talked about it in that
genetic thing, right, some peoplejust don't him as bad. Yeah,
and so like if that's the case, yeah, sure, I don't know.
I do not know. I Idon't drink enough even when I'm sort
of trying to actually feel buzzed anymore. So I don't know what the hell.
Yeah, you gotta go back tothe tequilas. I just bought some

(23:18):
like very top chelf mescal that Ihave not opened yet. Yeah, I
might get your buzz him. Yeah, potentially, I was going. You
know, we just passed. Cango to Mayo drink it a mio,
drinking a mio, drinking a mio. Yeah, you're fake holiday. Yeah,
America's fake holiday. Man, wecan't have ship. It's like Mexican
American, right, it's not evenlike Mexican. I think there is something

(23:42):
like in Mexico. Yeah, yeah, but it's not like but yeah,
no it yeah, it is American. It's a it's a reason for Americans
to drink. Yeah, it's likeSaint Patrick's Day. Here is more way
to blowout than it is. Andyeah, they said no one parties as
hard on to go to mile aswhite people. Yeah that's true. That's
probably true. Yeah, so true. Just fucking dumb bitches excuse to get

(24:02):
a margarita. That's literally all thoseYeah, no, I don't doubt that
at all. I like a littlemargarita. You're in a beach setting.
Yeah, well yeah, like Imean frozen margarita or on the rocks margarita.
We'll do both, but probably afrozen deal. You know, make
it a fucking dessert, Make aslushy, yeah, make it a fucking
treat. I mean, I don'tdrink any of that. But if I
had to choose one, I'd probablygo, Yeah, slushy on a beach.

(24:25):
Yeah, that's that's fine. Yeah, it's fine, no complaints there.
Yeah, tequila shot before and aftermaybe to really make it do something.
Yeah, and then they shove abeer in it sometimes, right,
Uh they can. Yeah, Idon't know about all that. Yeah,
rather just have a slushy. ButVegas has all that bullshit too, was
it Fat Tuesday? You basically justget like a Mardi Gras. Yeah,

(24:47):
like an icy on with a littlebit of overpriced alcohol. Yeah, ye
big boy. I mean they dotaste good. I get it, I
get it. But yeah, imaginethat like here, I think it could
be cool outside of the arena. You bring it up street. Yeah potentially
hopefully you know, wouldn't cause moretrouble than they already have there. But
I just think that because you're gonnalock it all down, it'll probably only

(25:07):
get better. Maybe, So youcan't. You just can't loop in old
Sack because old Sack is too muchof a chaos. Yeah, and it's
a little more spread, it's uncontrolled. Yeah, right, you need like
a strip to control, yeah, like a starting to finish to it.
Some gates like police force, likewhen they have events like particularly like they
have food events and stuff like that. Donetown those are they're gated off.

(25:30):
But then there's alcohol sales. Yeah, yeah, they walk around with it
or not. They shut down threeblocks leading into the capitol. Yeah,
might as well do that. Noone's driving on K Street. You're not
even allowed to drive on parts ofit. Yeah, so what hello,
So why not just do it?Yeah? It makes sense to me.
I don't know, give some localbusinesses a chance, give some people something
to do that's hopefully safe. Yeah. Again, you add alcohol, and

(25:52):
you add late nights, there's justalways gonna be Yeah, but we got
issues anyways. I don't think youget worse. One hopes Yeah, yeah,
it hopes not. But they usedto do this that wasn't controlled.
But they used to do a thingcalled Thursday Night Market on K Street and
it was super cool. Lots andlots of people. There was like booths
and it was like a farm.It started office like farmers market stuff.

(26:12):
Yeah, and then it was likekind of everything. I think they brought
it back on Caesar Shove As Park. Really it is. It was really
cool, but then there was justtoo much like gun violence and knife violence,
and it's kind of a knife club. That's why I think if you
out in force have to regulate thealcohol and you're allowed to drink on the
street, then they're gonna have toobviously have security police force. That would

(26:33):
make it slightly, you know, safer, rather than it's kind of an
in between where people are drinking butthey're not supposed to, then you're gonna
get issues. That's kind of howold sac is. Like. I'm sure
people are walking around there, andI'm sure all your guys' cities out there,
but it just makes a lot ofsense for like Sacramento, San Francisco,
San Diego. Yeah, to kindof have a little strip like that

(26:53):
kind of gives you a reason togo. I don't get the A's jamming
for a bit, you get theKing's jam and you get a casino down
here. Now at least there's manytourist reasons to visit, so the I
don't know if you've seen the ironyof the city voting to approve bonds to
help build that hospital complex, hospitalmedical school complex that was ARCA Yeah,

(27:21):
yeah, and the part of themoney goes to demolishing the foundation of a
major League baseball park. They startedto build there when the King's Arena was
built, the old Arco Arena wasbuilt. Interesting, it's still sitting there.
Like the whole thing, the wholefinancing and everything fell apart, but

(27:41):
it's still sitting there. Interesting,And they're gonna like for a major League
baseball team in town for three years. But at the same time, the
like major structural underpinnings of a majorLeague baseball park are going to get destroyed.
It would be better down here, though, No, definitely be better
down here for sure. Yeah.I'd rather have them just rip apart our

(28:03):
Triple A field or expanded or renovated, or make it bigger something. I
don't know if I don't even knowif it can be made big enough.
I know they can't put us putdecks on it without tearing it down.
Yeah, no, they probably can'tsupport. They probably don't do anything without
tearing it down. Now there's apartmentsall over. It'll be hard to expand
it. But hypothetically the location ofthat makes a lot more sense. It

(28:26):
was just literally across the river fromus. Yeah. Uh, this is
just an aside for us. Imight even cut this out because it's anachronistic.
But how's our meat doing in termsof registrations? Is it? Uh?
Take it like eighty percent ful ish? They were like, right there,
yeah, eighty percent full meat.October nineteenth, eighteen nineteen. I

(28:52):
believe it's nineteen nineteen. It's goingto California USAPO Open class only little competitive
action here at Third Street if youguys are us APL competitors and looking at
it, if you go to thelink Third Street BB sorry Instagram, Yeah,
Third Street BB links in little Bioto sign up. Yeah, a
couple spots left. A couple ofspots left since this show is up for

(29:14):
next week, probably be closed bythem, but sure we are waiting who
knows? Who knows? That shouldbe good. Yeah. So that brings
us around to the question I discoveredon on the powerlifting subreddit. Uh.
And of course now I've screwed itup and I can't find the person's name,
so you're just gonna have to livewithout any any shot out, any

(29:37):
credit whatever. The question is this, though, what if there were fewer
attempts allowed in powerlisting meets, liketwo or even one? Yeah, I
mean even even like lingo of thegame they say your openers, your last
warm up. Yeah, and whowants to watch that? I would rather
do that in the back. Yeah, it does. It does seem weird

(29:59):
if you compare it to other individualsports, you know, like a throwing
sport, discus, shot put, whatever, or like a long jump or
other things that are like very individualindividual because obviously track and fields individual,
but a race you are racing againstsomeone. So if you kind of try
to isolate some of these sports thatare as close as possible to powerlifting,

(30:22):
the difference is you're choosing your attemptto me, right, because shot,
but you got three attempts just toeat that bitch as far as you can.
Maybe your first one is your bestor discus or whatever where Yeah,
if you get three shots, andobviously there are variables which you don't know
exactly what you can hit in allthese sports. Yeah, highland games kind
of the same way. Yeah, similar, but they probably get three attempts,

(30:42):
right, they get multiple attempts, but it's still the best of three.
And I don't I think that they'reyou're you might only make the first
one. And yeah, this isprobably just some ancient shit to choose three,
why not five? Yeah, yeah, that's a long dame. Yeah,
but you know what I mean, like pathetically, when you invented these
sports in fucking three thousand BC orwhatever. Yeah, like why wouldn't it

(31:04):
just be five? And for powerlifting? Yeah, I mean it'll never happen,
But I wouldn't be that against too. You're I mean, you're obviously
always chasing your best number, butat the same time, you're relying on
the fact that your best number isnot going to be your first one.
And yeah, and it might noteven be that day. Like the more

(31:26):
competitive you get, the chances youhit a PR on platform and all time
PR is low, right because you'reactually trying to compete, so you're trying
to just do enough just to beatthe other guy. I think the only
things that would have to like you'dhave to start to adjust the selection rules
a little bit, like maybe thetime on them. Maybe you can select

(31:47):
or change your weight up until thirtyseconds of your attempt or something like that,
Right, Like if you only havetwo attempts and your first one is
like crazy rough, maybe you getmore time to contemplate on your second attempt
or something. But yeah, Idon't see a lot of negatives to be
honest, I really don't. No, I don't either. I think we'd
speed things up, Yeah, itwould, And yeah, I just don't

(32:09):
see that many negatives, like ifyou need that many because you literally get
infinite time and infinite control in thewarm up room, right, you know
if all that was limited or timeor like the logistics of that, like
in basketball or something that stuffs veryrestricted. You know, when you can
get on the court, you onlyhave ten minutes to do this, and
so yeah, if you're not warmenough for your game, you're gonna get

(32:30):
fucked. But here, I meanyou just go back there as long as
you want, Yeah, and youtake whatever attempt you want, and you're
on your own pace and your ownweights and your own coach and your own
So it kind of makes sense. And really, like even competitive power letters
say that, like, yeah, you're you know, you're your opener should
be kind of like your last warmup. So yeah, why not do
in the back? If we areif we're trying to grow the sport,

(32:50):
and we part of that is popularity, and part of that is spectators,
Yeah, making it more watchable, yeah, and for the people running it,
et cetera. And then yeah,I mean if you missgroove quote unquote
two lifts, yeah, fuck you, you weren't ready that day. You
know, that's misgroove is a isa an excuse and of reason at the
same time, you know, Andyeah, it's kind of a rough in

(33:13):
raw lifting. Yeah, it happens. For sure, there's technical breakdown,
but that's part of the sport. That's like, that's how you lifted the
weight, right then, Yeah, you're not gonna no one ever says that.
If you said that in basketball, yeah, the would fucking laugh you
off the court, you know whatI mean? Like miss that shot?
Yeah, man, my wrist,it didn't flick it right, Like,
shut the fuck up, bro, you'd missed. Miss is a like end
results all the matters in sports, right, we don't care how you got

(33:36):
there. Bro. You know, golf, they're not talking about that.
They could say like, oh Ihad a bad swing, like all right,
yeah, but you're not saying like, wow, I didn't turn my
But powerlifting, for some reason, the culture is weird. There's no other
sport if they do that weightlifting. The weightlifting is crazy technical. But even
that, I feel like they doit less or maybe they do it talking
to their coach. I don't know, is weird world strongest manager just happened?

(33:57):
Yeah, repeat by uh by theuk US sitting in third, and
Canadians and second. Yeah, Canadiansup. Man, they gotta be.
That's gotta be their best athlete alltime, them, him and Steve Nash
potentially, I don't know, Yeah, him or Steve Nash, I gotta
be. I mean Wayne is aWayne Gritzky American? No, I don't

(34:22):
know. Maybe, I don't know. Yeah, I thought he's from like
Minnesota. I might be wrong.Yeah, man, they probably got some
hockey players, but Wayne Grizky's thegreatest all time. True, So they
got the third best hockey player alltime. They got Steve Nash, one
of my favorite point gards all thetime. He's probably top five, top
ten point cards all time. Theygot a Bob Marley's son played on the

(34:43):
Canadian Rohan. I think Rohan wasa Canadian. I think it was on
the I don't know how. Idon't know if he played in their national
soccer league or was on their nationalteam. That's what I don't know.
Was Lauren Hill's boothang really yeah?Yeah, he was pro soccer. But

(35:06):
again, I don't know if heplayed. I assume they have some kind
of national soccer team or league league. Okay, this is list of best
Canadian athletes. Sports Illustrated the listof best Canadian athletes. This is a
really obvious one that we just skippedright over. GSB. Oh. Yeah,

(35:27):
yeah, he probably wins, becauseyou could still probably make a good
argument he's the best mixed martial artistsof all time. Yeah, twenty two
to two record, Yeah, youcoulda you could definitely argue he's the best.
Wayne Gretzky. Damn it, heis Canadian. Yeah, he's born
in Ontario. God damn it.George Tavallo never heard of him. Aubrey
Graham, Oh no, you've seenhis jumper video. He lost twice to

(35:53):
Muhammad Ali. That's uh, that'syour uh yeah, that's your best.
Yeah, getting your ass whooped twice. But I've never seen this picture before.
I have an either by the actualbest. Yeah, some of that
stuff is funny. People make alot of fun of a basketball in particular
when they say, like, oh, like Larry Bird was good or Matgic
Johnson was good, but they're scoringagainst plumbers and shit, they was like,
make that joke, which isn't truein NBA in the eighties, but

(36:16):
I get the joke. You lookat the insurance salesman though. Yeah.
You look at h Muhammad Ali foughtand some of us fights, You're like,
fuck, dude, that dude's neverlike got off the couch, like
someone look like such slobs. Butthen you look at Tyson Fury, who's
you know, one of the besteveryways ever, and he also looks like
he's never got off the couch.Yeah. Gary Gate never heard of him.
Lacrosse player. Oh, they gottahave a runner, uh not Marion?

(36:38):
Fuck? Who's he got popped?Their big track star that got popped?
Ben? Yeah? Ben Johnson rights. Yeah. If he didn't get
popped, he'd probably be on thislist. Maurice Richard Hockey Hall of Fame
wave the customary three year wait inorder to induct him in nineteen sixty one.
Not somebody I know. This isthe name I've heard Ferguson Janekins,

(37:00):
I'm out. Uh hockey? OhNo, Baseball. Angeleague Baseball played for
four teams in his career, alwayswill always be remembered as a cub Okay.
He won the nineteen seventy one soyoung and made the All Stars in
three times. They got some youngbasketball kids shyes from there. Arguably arguably

(37:20):
the best point guard in the leagueright now is Canadian. Yeah yeah,
he played for Okay, see hemight. He probably belongs on the list
now. If fucking number four lostto muhammed a league twice, this has
this reigning fucking yeah, as hisLinkedIn profile states, we're missing a very
obvious hockey star. However, Idon't know shit about hockey. I wish

(37:42):
I did. Gordy How Yeah,I don't even know. I just know
Gretzky. Gordy how played for inthe in the NHL for five decades.
He played seventeen ninety seven games, the most of all time. No one
will ever talk that Steve Nash thatyou mentioned, Yeah, buddy, how's
he so low? Are these inorder? I don't know. No,
they're not number not the stud anotherhockey that we missed. Obviously, there's

(38:07):
gonna be a lot of hockey players, Bobby or yeah or maybe sounds familiar.
I played like one hockey game onGame Boy, so then you like
learn the roster, you know,Yeah, I think he was on there.
Cindy Klassen speed skater. Yeah, curling, speed skating, I don't
give a shit. Nineteen seventy twoTeam Canada, the whole team NHL first

(38:29):
ever series involving NHL players defeated theSoviet Union. Nineteen seventy two Summit Series.
What's the movie miracle? I wasjust telling the kids about that.
Yeah, that's gotta be what lateseventies. Then they played the ussr IS
eighty eighty. Yeah, Mike Weir, I know that name. Yeah,
PGA, Yeah, yeah, yeah, that's legit. Yeah, golf.

(38:50):
I mean they don't have two thousandand three when he won the Masters.
They don't have a lot of sunup there. It really does ruin.
But then you think like basketball wouldbe harder hitting. I mean, now
Shi is really good. There areother kids from out there. But yeah,
another hockey name we miss, MarioLemieux. Lemieux I know, yeah,
played for seventeen season, scored sixhundred and ninety goals. Lemio.
I know he's from Montreal, buthe played for Pittsburgh. I think they

(39:14):
have a couple uh yes soccer playerssomewhere that have been Okay. Rohan Marley
played in the NFL. NFL apparentlyI'm on it some wiki. That's crazy.
Yeah, Clara Hughes. Another speedskater, Donovan Bailey. Who's Donovan

(39:35):
Bailey? That's not familiar. Yeah, one of the stars of the nineteen
ninety six Atlanta Olympics, winning goldin one hundred meters and the four by
one hundred relay. He was goingto say, you're like gymnasts or something,
you think they might be able tosneak in there. Maybe I don't
know. I can't see the wholelist, so I'm just going on.
They're just revealing. As I said, I'm just thinking like indoor sports.
Yeah, you would think indoors.Yeah, because even like Toronto's pretty south

(40:00):
them and it's fucking freezing. Backto baseball, Larry Walker, Yeah,
I don't know that played for theRockies. Finished his career with a three
thirteen average, which is not aneasy thing to do. In nineteen ninety
nine he hit three seventy nine. That's outstanding. Side note on baseball,
just saw a clip it's King GriffyJunior. Fuck was it Barry Bonds?

(40:24):
I forgot who it was. Itmight have been young Barry. I don't
know, but this fool just spiderMan's in the outfield to take away someone's
home run. Oh it might havebeen Albert Bell. Fuck I forgot who
it was, but somebody in thisyou know, he who went up the
wall. Yeah, bro, yeahsnags. It ends up beating his home
run record at the end of theyear by one home run. You know,

(40:45):
like I think King Griffy had likeforty nine, and it might have
been Albert Bell had like forty eight. And then they yeah, do like
a flashback at it, and he'sfucking spider manning up this wall and dislocates
his shoulder to catch this fucking thing. Gesz. Yeah. Other another hockey
player, Patrick Roy not not amember of the succession Roy family. Lenox

(41:09):
Lewis Okaya boxing. Yeah, fortyone to two and one career record,
Lenox lusion legend. He was bornin London but held dual citizenship with Canada,
so he's I guess we'll count ofSidney Crosby. My yeah, I
know that, my my son anddaughter in law used to run on the

(41:30):
same track as Sidney Crosby hockey.Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know
that name. He averaged thirty fivepoint eight goals this season in his first
six years. Oh, you know, if that's good. How many games
are you even playing a season?I don't know. It's a good question.
Not a hockey guy. Jacques VilleneuveFormula one driver from nineteen ninety six

(41:50):
to two thousand and six, woneleven of one hundred and sixty five races,
which competed Gaate and Bouchet. Idon't know him at all. Speed
skater. Back to MLB. JustinMorneau. It's been all ten years of
his MLB career with the Twins.Four time All Star, one time a
l m v P. And that'sthe end of the sports illustrats list.

(42:14):
It's all I got, It's allI got. No Aubrey Graham, Yeah,
sorry, sorry Aubrey. Sorry.Bucko sit the sidelines on this one.
Prior Media, which is another companythat I don't know has a has
a more compact list. Gretzky,Donovan Bailey, Clara Hughes, Mario Lemu,
Sydney Klaust and Terry Fox. That'sinteresting. The marathon her Oh Hayley

(42:43):
Wickenheiser in women's hockey, Christine Sinclairsockey player, soccer player and captain of
the comedian Canadian national team. Iwonder if, like the ESP and Steve
Nash, yeah, GSP is probablytheir best yeah, if you I wonder
if it, like culturally, doestrickle down to like people just don't care,

(43:05):
Like, do you like the averagefifteen to twenty five year old Canadian
just not care that much about sports? Because I feel like just caring is
so much to be good, right, because if they cared, America fucking
cares. Yeah. I think thatthey care a lot about hockey. Yeah,
I think they care a lot alot about hockey. Yeah, just
from observationally. Sure, I don'tknow beyond that, you know what I

(43:29):
mean? Yeah, I mean, and then like to only care about one
sport's weird too, And maybe that'sjust because obviously we're fucking American and sports
are like very important to us.If baseball were bigger in in Canada,
there would be some kind of anEast go with some kind of West Coast
team, sure if there was.If the NBA were bigger in Canada,

(43:50):
there would be some kind of aWest Coast There was for a while,
yeah, yeah, they had theyhad a team for a long time.
They had the Grizzlies for a reallylong time. The other issue, too,
is they just don't have folks, right, Yeah, they don't.
There's just no people. Is likewhat do they say Texas or something?
Right, Yeah, yeah, likethe whole So then like to even have
a Steve Nash or a Crosby's prettyimpressive. Yeah, you have a smaller
pool to drive. But then Iguess you reverse Uno card that bitch and

(44:14):
freak athletes. If we went throughthe top Texan born athletes, the list
would probably wop their ass probably,Yeah, Like Texas football is Insaneoh,
probably Texas powerlifting, which I don'tknow if you want to count even Yeah,
they're the best. Yeah, yeah, they're the best if you look
at you just Texas powerlifting currently, they're probably the best in the world.

(44:35):
Yeah, it blows everybody out thewater. Yeah. And then like football,
obviously, wrestling's okay, Basketball's solid. Rap game is through the roof
hop hip hop rosters nutty, notas good as the at L, but
they're doing pretty good. What othersports I got down there? Track and
field they're probably nutty. I betyou they got some sprinters and drawers that

(44:57):
are crazy. I mean, theUniversity of Texas good everything. Baseball I
bet you's pretty good. Now asgood as California. But I bet you
baseball in Texas and now as goodas Florida. But it's Florida California.
I mean, there are a lotof states that just produced freaks, but
Florida, California, Texas, probablyOhio. And I'm slightly biased, but
it is slightly true. Just whipout freaks and like track and field,
football, wrestling, baseball, andbasketball. I think Florida California is the

(45:21):
baseball leaders. Okay, this isthis is a This is Texas Monthly's list
of the sixteen most influential Texas sportsicons. They better have this fifty years
Texas rattlesnake on there. Let's seeGeorge Foreman. Yeah, boom, he's
whooped. Lennox close ass. AerolSpence Junior is a welterweight boxer. Yeah

(45:45):
interesting. Roger Staubach is stallback freak. Patrick Mahomes at twenty six, are
already in the best quarterback or afootball player of conversation of all time.
Okay, this this one blows mymind. Okay, so uh sports writers,
they're in so his figures, notathletes. Throw them in there.

(46:06):
Yeah, dang Jenkins, who wroteI believe he wrote Friday Night Lights.
Yeah, I haven't seen the movie. I think I've only seen the show.
I haven't seen the movie either orthe show, to be honest with
you, but the one that thisone blows my mind. And this book
is actually in this room right now. It's Basketball and Other Things by Shay
Serrano. I know that name.Shay Serrano's books, including Basketball and other

(46:30):
Things, are illustrated by the sameguy who the illustrations in our bathroom are
from. Yeah. Coaches, yeah, probably all of them. Darryl Royle
of University of Texas. Does itsay sport basketball, football? Paraye football

(46:50):
football, gotta be football? AndGreg Popovich. Yeah, I didn't know
he's born there. But Papovich.Yeah, arguably top five, I mean
not even our top five basketball coachinghistory at sport Baseball, Jose Cruz played
for the Astros and nineteen seventy fourNational League's Best Kept Secret. Uh and

(47:14):
current Jose L. Tuve. He'sa shortman. He's very short, and
that's all they got. Game changers, Lee Trevino, Simone Biles, oh,
some Mons, Yeah, and theQueen Bee Beyonce. Beyonce, I

(47:35):
mean some own Biles alone, probablycrushes all those Canadian names. H Earl
Campbell, I know that name, played at UT and Arch Manning. Oh
yeah, all the Mannings, Yeahyou're there. Fun, Canada's fine.
Canada lost, Canada lost all threeMannings. And the young gun is supposed

(47:55):
to be crazy. I don't knowArch. Yeah, is he named after
the grap But yeah, he's goingcrazy. I think he's about to be
sophomore in college. I forgot, but I think they say he's nutty too.
Yeah. You take both the Manningbrothers and Pat Mahomes. Yeah,
yeah, you're done. Yeah, you're done. Pat Maholmes could have played
pro baseball too. Yeah, yeah, you're done. Yeah. I hate

(48:16):
the guy guy. He's very annoying, but he's a free co So this
is an interesting category. Quarterback turnedsportscaster. Uh, this is one that
you guys will not know. DonMeredith aka Dandy Don Meredith. He used
to he was Howard Cosell's sidekick Coselland then yeah, yeah, one of

(48:39):
one of the three it was.It was Frank Gifford, Don Meredith and
Howard Cosell. And this one isreally weird. I don't know who really
believes this Tony Romo. Oh yeah, I mean he's still good. But
the things he just says obvious things. You just oh an announcer, Yeah,

(49:00):
yeah, I meant football player.Yeah no, I'm talking about yeah
announcer. He's fine, he's fine. He just says the most obvious thing.
He's like kind of the uh likecookie cutter announcer. Yeah, it
looks it, talks it. Yeah, he's fine, but you're not gonna
hate him either. There's some announcersyou're like, God, this guy's annoying.
You know, he's fine. Yeah, he's not wonderful, But yeah,

(49:22):
that's that list is I'm sure missingfootball players like o Lineman and shit.
Yeah there there was a Sports Illustratedlist from nineteen ninety nine that I
had fifty people on it and Iwas not going to get there. No,
no, canad already lost. Sorryguys, Texas whooped that ass this.
They probably got better hockey players thanYouTube, let's face it. So
I'll rip through this list. Somebodyelse's list of top top ten. Ben

(49:44):
Hogan, yeah, ga, ByronNelson bg A semi ball, I don't
know him, quarterback TCU uh trisspeaker Hubbard don't know who that that is,
Nolan Ryan, Ol Ryan, thatwins too, George Foreman, Earl

(50:05):
Campbell, Bob Lilly, and there'sa bunch of Kevin rant I don't know.
I think he's born there. Hedefinitely went to ut And I feel
like that's often a choice if you'reborn there, you know what I mean,
if you're somewhere else, you're pregnant. A lot of East Coast guys
ended up in a duke or inNorth Carolina. A lot of West Coast
guys end up at a uc USCand a U C l A. Even

(50:28):
though it's not obviously geographical, right, it's kind of geographical. Some of
the honorable mentions. Washington he wasborn in Washington, No way, I
didn't know that. Sure. Ohhe's a Baltimore guy, Washington, Washington.
Yeah he's from Baltimore. You're right, I knew he was from Baltimore.
Eric Dickerson, shows Swoops, CarlLewis, Carl Swoops, Yeah,
freak. Michael Johnson a jar,I don't know it was NASCAR, some

(50:54):
kind of car drive. Mike Singletary, Yeah, Lance Berkman, Yeah,
you're fuck to Canada. Population wisetexts whooping that athlete ass Yeah, and
yeah we even touch baseball. I'msure there's baseball kids out of there.
Yeah. Yeah, that's it.Yeah, there's your history in sports.
