Are you feeling discouraged by your podcast download numbers? It’s time to shift your perspective and embrace the true power of speaking directly to the one person who needs your voice the most. Focusing on a single listener creates deeper, more authentic connections and can actually expand your reach in ways you never imagined. Even top podcasters like Mel Robbins have used this approach to grow their shows and inspire others.

When you let go of the numbers game and measure success by genuine engagement, you’ll discover the value of even a small, dedicated audience. Your show can become a powerful networking tool for both personal growth and business development. By identifying your ideal listener and speaking straight to them, you’ll create episodes filled with authenticity, personality, and meaningful interviews that resonate on a profound level.

Never underestimate the ripple effect your words can have. Podcasts change lives every day, and your unique story or perspective might be exactly what someone else needs to hear. Take action by picturing that one specific person as you plan your next episode, then speak as if you’re having a private conversation. By placing impact before stats, you’ll not only grow your show but also spark genuine, life-changing connections in your audience. Are you ready to let go of the numbers and embrace this powerful mindset?

(00:00):
Hey Podcaster, I am so excited toshare this with you today because it

(00:06):
was shared with me and that is thepower of podcasting is that one to one.
Something impacts you, then you share itwith others, and that's the true gift of
being a podcaster, of being in someone'sear while they're doing something.
It's an intimate connection, and I want to share with you a
shift in mindset that might help.

(00:27):
actually get you growing your showfaster than you think possible and
get you feeling good about yournumbers no matter where they are.
Because remember, it is aboutbeyond the downloads here, but
sometimes our egos get in the way.
So are you ready?
Let's go.

(00:51):
So I love, love, love having a community.
I have built a beyondthe downloads community.
We have hot seat coaching.
We do all the things and it's really justa juicy support group for entrepreneurs
because it is beyond the downloads.
That's why I talk aboutthe podcast sales funnel.
That's why I talk about the impactof impacting one and one of my

(01:15):
amazing, amazing members sharedwith me a podcast that Mel Robbins
was on with the let them theory.
If you have not read thatbook, there's a reason that it
is breaking records in sales.
And let me tell you, it broke my mind, but they had asked her what one of her
main keys to success was with our podcast.

(01:38):
And she said, I'm talking to one person.
We're having one conversation.
I'm talking to you.
I'm building a relationship and I'mthinking about that one listener
that I can impact on the other side.
And this is one of the thingsthat I have been saying forever.
And when I was speaking onthe PodFest stage, yes, I was

(01:58):
on the main stage at PodFest.
Last week, January 16th, Imade my debut on a big stage.
Yes, I've done speaking gigs formasterminds and things that are in
person, but this was my biggest stage.
And this was exactly thesame thing that I shared.
Because my book, Your Story isSomeone's Life Raft, is about that.

(02:21):
One morning, Someone's storychanged my life, which is why
I am still on this planet.
And I think that this is one of thethings that we forget as podcasters,
because we're pumping out so much content.
We're repurposing, we'retrying to get it to grow.
We're seeing all these numbers, whichlet me tell you, a lot of them are
fake numbers and there are so much.

(02:43):
exaggeration that it makesyou feel not good enough.
If you look at the actual research, like36 downloads is more than 50 percent
of the podcasts that are out there.
And still that's 36 people.
Dave Jackson always comes to mind when Ihear these numbers because he's like, 36
people, that's a full classroom that'scoming back to listen every single week.

(03:04):
That should feel pretty goodthat you're making that impact.
Also, if you're looking at itfrom a business ROI, so return on
investment standpoint, your podcastlistener who's spending that much
time with you is building thatknow, like and trust so much faster.
And they're probably going to be yourdiehard fans, those people that are in
your memberships that are in your groupsthat are in all these different places

(03:27):
with you and want to be led and be part ofyour world, which is great because then it
becomes their world and then we trigger.
trickle out.
And then instead of a ripple, we becomea tsunami because we have this powerful
tool behind us called podcasting.
It truly is an amazing tool.
And we need to shift this mindset.

(03:48):
So going back to this podcastthat was shared with me.
It reminded me of why I teach talkto one person, why I teach that
podcasting is a networking tool.
Yes.
It can grow your business.
Yes.
It's organic marketing.
Yes, yes, yes.
But for me, one of the things that I'vegotten away from is so many interviews.

(04:10):
And that was the part that I loved.
My first show was all interviews.
Those connections are what saved my life.
Those connections are what builtthe business that I have today.
It wasn't that I went in and I waslike, you're going to be on my show
cause you're an ideal client and thenI'm going to pitch to you at the end.
It was no, I built those genuineconnections with those people.

(04:32):
And some of them are my friends.
I just got to meet a bunch of them.
in real life at this podcast, festival, convention, whatever you want to call it.
And it was Amazing.
I felt like I truly have spent somuch time and so much of my life with
these people and it's because of theway that this content is consumed.

(04:56):
The best podcasters are theones that put time and thought
into giving you an actual.
Podcast that you want to listento that leaves an impact in your
life, whether that's entertaining, educating, or, you know, inspiring.
That's what you need to do.
So when you're going through andyou're starting to work on your next

(05:16):
shows, I want you to start thinkingabout some of these things like,
what if you just impacted one person?
What impact would you wantto leave on that one person?
Can you think of that one person?
And I know we've all done theseexercises, build your avatar,
build this, build that, but that's.
Not what I'm talking about here.
I want you to think about, I don'tknow, a friend, someone close to you,

(05:38):
someone that you've met in passing, and how could you create an episode
that could impact that person's life?
And then after you do that, share it with that person if
you have a connection with them.
Even if you don't share it with thatspecific person, because you have taken
the time to speak to that specific person, although it seems counterintuitive,

(05:58):
you're actually going to go deeper withthe other people that are listening.
You're also going to go deeper in tounderstanding that person because when
we talk to the masses, We get nothing.
We really need to start focusingon that one to one connection.
And that's what so many peopleare craving right now is that
connection with other humans.

(06:19):
I have been in a lot of really biggroups and I help manage one of
my clients, giant Facebook groups.
And that's the one thing thateveryone's wanting is that
connection, that masterminded piece.
That's the one thing that the beyond the.
downloads group that I have, the, thefunnel builders, basically we do all
the offer stacking and everything.

(06:40):
That's the one part of the group thatthey love the most is when we do hot
seat coachings, because we get toactually talk and listen and actively
listen and support one another.
And I think that that is where 2025is going as those deeper connections.
So thinking about this, yes,we need to have the solo

(07:07):
I want you to think of me as the expertin podcasting that you come to to
grow your business through podcastingwhere we can create offer stacks.
I'm going to be sharing a lotof that, but I also want you
to connect with the stories.
I also want to bring on otherpeople so that you know that
it's not just me telling you thatpodcasting can change your life.

(07:29):
There were so many stories and connectionsand conversations I had last week with
people that were, yeah, a podcast changedmy life this way, a podcast changed
my life this way, yeah, I had the samething, I had suicidal ideations, I
had the plan for the day, listen to apodcast, I have heard it So many times.

(07:52):
So if you are getting stuck inthe number download, it's time for
you to start shifting that focus.
I mean, heck, that interviewthat my client sent over to me,
amazing client shout out Robin.
But.
She sent it over to me and Mel Robbins, who fights with Joe Rogan for the
very top podcast on Apple, I thinkshe should be up there all the time

(08:14):
personally, because she's amazing.
But that's not the that's not the point.
She said it's all about the connectionsin this interview that she did.
It's all about the connections.
The key to her success with herpodcast is talking to one person.
Will it trickle out and affect others?
Yes, but it's making that plan.

(08:34):
It's coming up with that content thatis going to impact that one person.
It's just like when I say a tsunami, when a tsunami hits, guess what?
That doesn't just impact oneperson, that affects many.
And I know that when you think ofit like the destructive side of
an actual tsunami, that's kind of.
The analogy it is, is it's like,I have a single wave that comes in

(08:58):
and takes on and clears and givesthe message to the masses, where
yes, a ripple can go a long way.
But this affects and is kind of likein your face, like, boom, here we go.
And that's what I want people tounderstand as a podcast is that
you don't know who's on the otherside, but I want you to pretend

(09:20):
you are talking to just one person.
And it's so hard and it'sso hard to focus down.
And that's one of the biggest, that'sthe second biggest problem is that
You are spraying spaghetti every week.
You've got to have a focus.
So that being said, beyond the downloadsfocus is using podcasting to get

(09:41):
your story out in the world so thatyou can make an impact and income.
It is still a core of how to podcastand what's going on in the podcast
world, but it is using the storythrough podcasting to make the impact.
And that involves Havingtrue connections with people.

(10:03):
So think about that the next time yougo is that yeah, you're spilling out all
this great information you're sharingfrom your heart, but I want you to start
talking to this person like they'reyour best friend that's struggling
with whatever you can help them with.
Talk to that one person.
If you have colorful language, usethe colorful language because the more
authentic you are, the less boringyou'll be and the more you'll be able

(10:27):
to make an impact with your words, with your message, with your podcast.
Because again, we don't need hugenumbers to make these big goals that we
have, whether that's income or impact.
What we need is to have a messagethat resonates with people.
I have continually builtmy production business.

(10:48):
I have continually built mypodcast coaching business.
I've continually built my membershipgroup strictly through my podcast.
Tiny bit of social media marketing, butit's all about making those connections.
Half the people I talk to more than half,I'm going to say 90 percent of the people
I talk to on my shows don't work with me,but when they come across someone who's

(11:13):
like, I want to start a podcast, youknow what happens, they reach out to me.
Because I talked to that one person.
I actively listened.
I had a conversation.
I created that deep connection and youcan do that through your podcast, whether
you're interviewing someone or how you aresharing with other people in the world,
and I was reminded of that again today andlast week when I was standing on stage and

(11:37):
spilling that same speech almost of likeyour story can really impact somebody's
life, but then to have somebody point outa Mel Robbins interview where she's like
the key to success is You know, that oneto one conversation, it's so important.
And I'm not saying to onlydo interview episodes.
You need to stand out.

(11:57):
You need to be the expert on yourshow, but create those connections
because that's where the magic lies.
That's where you're going toget that impact that you desire.
And that's where you're going tomake a difference in this world.
So this is a short little like reminderto you to get out of your head with
the numbers and start thinking aboutthe person on the other side, the

(12:17):
person that's listening, the personthat you're interviewing, that one
person, think of one person at a time.
And I mean, if you were the personthat got the email from me months
later, that was like, Hey, I hada plan for the day because of
something you said on your show.
I'm still on this planet.
You saved my life.

(12:39):
Would that be enough for you tostart putting more effort and
taking podcasting seriously?
Would it be worth it to you?
That's what I want you to start thinkingabout is thinking about that one person,
that one person on the other side, that's, what's going to grow your show.
That's what's making MelRobbins, you know, blow up and.
And constantly compete with Joe Roganat the top of the charts, because people

(13:03):
want to listen, because if you look ather books, if you look at how she talks,
if you actually pay attention to whatshe's saying, she's talking to one person.
And it feels like you most of the time.
And that's what I want youto do for your audience.
So your story is enough.
You are enough.
If you are worthy, go out, maketoday amazing, grab that microphone

(13:27):
because the world needs your message.
Now go do the thing.
