"Send Coach a text"

Ever notice how life's most profound business lessons often come from unexpected moments? That's exactly what happened during my birthday week.

Golf with my family taught me three crucial entrepreneurial insights. First, the ability to shake off bad shots is paramount. When business doesn't go as planned—and it rarely does—don't let temporary setbacks derail your entire journey. Second, remember that after every challenging "hole," there's always another opportunity to start fresh. Finally, sometimes the wisest move isn't attempting a miraculous recovery but simply getting back to safe ground. In both golf and business, knowing when not to be a hero can save you from disaster.

The family tradition we call "the whip around" revealed another powerful truth. During this practice, everyone takes turns sharing something positive about the birthday person. The lesson? Don't just think appreciative thoughts—speak them aloud. As leaders, we often assume our teams know we value them without explicitly saying so. Yet there's irreplaceable power in verbalized appreciation. Make it a practice to specifically and sincerely acknowledge what makes your team members valuable.

Perhaps the most touching moment came unexpectedly when my grandson spontaneously kissed me on the cheek during celebrations. This simple gesture created a memory I'll treasure forever—and nearly went unnoticed in the busy atmosphere. Kingdom entrepreneurs must cultivate the awareness to catch these precious moments amid the chaos of building a business. After all, meaningful connections aren't distractions from our work; they're often the very purpose of it.

Whether you're navigating setbacks, leading a team, or balancing business with life's precious moments, these birthday reflections offer valuable guidance for your entrepreneurial journey. business isn't just what we do,it's who we are.
Let's get into it.
This podcast will start in 3, 2, 1.

Speaker 2 (00:54):
Hey everybody, welcome to the show.
I'm your host, coach Martin.
We got a good.
We got a special, special, special, special week.
It's my, it was my birthday, and the way we do it here at the
house is it's not just yourbirthday for the day, it's your
birthday all week, and sometimeswe would stretch it longer.
I don't know if you guys dothis, but sometimes we'll just
do it for the whole month, butin reality we do it for the week

(01:16):
.
So today's episode is going tobe on lessons from my birthday.
So yesterday was super special.
Um basically started with myboys taking me to golf.
That was super fun.
Then we went and you know, thefamily cooked dinner for me and
then we had the dessert.
So we're going to start withthree lessons that I'm going to
share with you that I think aregoing to be applicable for you

(01:37):
and your entrepreneurship.
Number one golf with my kids.
So I'm very competitive.
I go there.
You know my son-in-law isreally, really good.
I usually am not going to beathim.
He's about a four or fivehandicap.
But we were playing with me oneof my sons and then my
son-in-law, one of his friendsand I was like, okay, I'm going

(01:58):
to beat the other two.
Well, you know, the first threeholes I didn't start out pretty
good.
I don't know if I got anygolfers out there listening, but
you know, sometimes you show upand it ain't working, you know,
and a couple of times, like youhit some really good shots but
you know, took a bad roll, go inthe bunker, you know, and
sometimes it just it starts offpretty bad, but you know, here's
the deal.
You know, just because you havea few bad shots, don't let it

(02:20):
affect your whole day.
You know it could have easilyaffected the rest of my game and
then it could have went into mybirthday and they just kind of
ruined the whole thing.
So get really good at shakingstuff off, especially if we're
talking business.
Business doesn't always go theway that we plan, so sometimes
you got to just shake off thebad shots.

(02:41):
Number two always remember thatno matter how bad you did on
that hole, there's alwaysanother one.
So get good at erasing it andstarting over.
And the third thing I want totalk about on golf is there's
times where you hit a bad shotand you're under trees or you're
behind a bush, or whatever thecase is.
Don't be a hero.

(03:02):
Sometimes the safest bet isjust to get back in the fairway.
You shake it off and then youjust start over from there.
Business is the same way.
So if you find yourself in ahole, you know the old saying
put the shovel down.
Okay, number two don't speak it.
Or I should say, don't think it, speak it.
So you're probably thinkingwell, what is he talking about?

(03:23):
So my wife does this specialthing that she's done for a long
time.
Where she calls it, it's calledthe whip around.
So every day on somebody'sbirthday you know, when we
typically were at a table, ourbaby were in the living room we
always do a thing where everyonegoes around the room and they
say something good about that, about that person, and it's just
special.
So she's very, very good atdoing it, she's very intentional

(03:45):
and you know we're in thekitchen and we're getting ready
to jump into the dessert right, blow out the candle and everyone
does the whip around and youknow it's just it's special.
You know, I know, you know it,I know that people, you know
they love you and you probablyalready know that, but it's
super special just hearing thegreat things about yourself,

(04:05):
that they think of you.
So I'm going to encourage you Iknow this isn't so much
business, but be good atspeaking it.
If you have employees, don'tjust think it.
Make sure you tell them.
Tell them how much youappreciate them, tell them what
they mean to you, but make surethat when you start your

(04:26):
birthday, do the whip around.
I promise it'll be along-lasting effect.
And the third thing I want totalk about is don't miss the
moments.
So I love golf and it's easy tosit there and tell you that my
favorite time yesterday wasplaying golf and hitting a
couple amazing shots.
Normally that would be the case.

(04:46):
Normally I would be honest andI'd be telling you that I
remember there was oneparticular moment where I was
sitting at the bar and I'msitting on a bar stool and I'm
getting ready to get, like youknow, my ice cream and to blow
out my candle, and I had thefamily all around standing up
and next to me in the bar stoolstill next to me was my

(05:08):
son-in-law.
My son-in-law was my grandsonand he was sitting there.
We're talking, we're alltalking, and I could feel him.
He reaches over.
He kissed me on the cheek.
He literally just kissed me onthe cheek.
He literally just kissed me onthe cheek like for no reason,
and I remember looking up and mywife missed the moment.
She was down on her phone andyou know I was encouraged
because I wanted to tell her assoon as we got in the car to go

(05:28):
home.
But you know what Like thatmoment I'll never forget the
rest of my life.
So slow down sometimes, don'tmiss the moments.
Right, there's some specialmoments going on, even in chaos.
So slow down and don't miss themoments.
Listen, I promise you that youhave friends, you have family,
you have colleagues that need tohear some of the things that we
