Speaker 1 (00:05):
Hey friend, welcome
back to Entrusted to Lead.
I'm Danita Cummins and I'm soglad that you're here today.
We've been talking this monthabout something that I think so
many of us wrestle with quietlywhat happens when the thing
you've been doing just doesn'tfit anymore, when your
leadership, your job, even yourroutines, feels more like weight
than purpose?
Or calling this month's themeis the courage to pivot, and
(00:29):
today I want us to talk heart toheart about what that really
means, especially when God isstirring something new in you.
Our scripture for today isIsaiah 43, 19, which is one of
my favorites, and it says I amdoing a new thing.
Now it springs forth.
Do you not perceive it?
I will make a way in thewilderness and the rivers in the
(00:53):
desert.
So let me ask you somethinghave you ever been in a season
where you're still doing all theright things but inside you
just feel off?
That's okay.
Today we're going to dive intosome tools and tips and areas to
help you grow.
So grab your cup of coffee oryour favorite beverage or some
really good walking shoes andlet's get started.
(01:17):
Leadership can feel really heavysometimes, especially when
you're carrying vision andpeople and purpose all on your
shoulders all at the same time.
You have got a big mission, butthe strategy feels fuzzy and
your team is looking at you forclarity that you're not sure you
actually have.
I get it.
It's hard.
I'm Danita Cummins.
(01:38):
I help faith-driven leaderslike you find clarity, align
with your values and lead withconfidence, without burning out,
because that's never okay.
If you're ready to get unstuck, lead your team with courage and
to turn that God-given visioninto a strategy that really
works.
I want us to talk.
Take the free leadershipclarity quiz that I've created
(01:59):
today and I want you to scheduleyour no-pressure coaching call,
because together we can uncoverwhat's holding you back and how
to move forward in faith andconfidence.
So back to the beginningquestion have you ever been in a
season where you're still doingall the right things, but
inside you feel just off?
Maybe you're tired, not justphysically, but it's like your
(02:24):
soul is tired.
Maybe you're tired not justphysically, but it's like your
soul is tired, like you don'tfeel as lit up about the work
that you used to do.
Or maybe you're still showingup, but you're secretly
wondering why it all feels soheavy.
Sometimes that's burnout, whichis totally fair, but sometimes
and I feel this even right now,in this season of my life, it's
the Holy Spirit that's gentlynudging us, saying hey, the
(02:46):
season is about to come to anend, it's time to do something
different.
Look, behold, I am doingsomething new.
Now listen first.
Before we dive into this topic, which I know can be a little bit
scary, I want to tell you thisone thing Pivoting does not mean
that you failed.
Okay, let's just say that alittle louder for the folks in
(03:09):
the back of the room.
It doesn't mean that you'reflaky or that you missed out.
It doesn't mean that you arebroken or flawed.
It just simply means thatyou're paying attention.
It means that you're growing.
God's not mad at you forchanging directions.
In fact, he often leads us intonew assignments when we least
(03:29):
expect it.
So if you're sensing that it'stime to shift, that's not
something to hide from.
It's something to bring to himin prayer with open hands and an
open heart.
And we're going to talk alittle bit more about that today
.
The thing that I've learned overthe years, when we get to this
place in the initial feeling oridentification, is really just
(03:52):
that it's really listening andsaying, hey, hmm, I don't think
this fits anymore or, hmm, Idon't really feel like
everything is aligned and we areonly called to stop and
acknowledge it.
I don't necessarily have to fixit or solve it today.
I might not have the next fiveor 10 steps of my life or my
(04:15):
plan figured out, but justacknowledging and listening and
looking up and saying Irecognize that something is
shifting.
I might not know exactly whatit is or where we're going, but
I definitely at leastacknowledge that something's
going on.
That's a huge win.
Okay, so let's talk about whatwe can actually do when we feel
(04:35):
like we might need to pivot.
First, just like I said before,we need to reflect, and some of
the questions you can askyourself, or one of the main
questions, is what feels heavyor out of sync in your life or
in your leadership?
I know this might seem like apointed question and, at face
value, it might seem really easyto ask or answer, but you can't
(04:58):
reflect on anything if youdon't stop.
Be still.
That was the verse last month, right In April, and if you got
the Beyond the Boardroomnewsletter that we just sent out
, you'll remember that that wasthe verse that we had, psalm
4610.
That says be still and knowthat I am Lord, be still, is an
action.
You're intentionally doingsomething, so the same thing.
(05:20):
We're going to equate that toreflection.
We need to stop and we need tolook and see what's going on.
I've been reading some reallygreat books about purpose and
about wholeness as I'm workingon my new book project, and one
of the ones that I read justlast week that I'll share in the
show notes was reallyinsightful because he said
(05:41):
sometimes well, all the time youcan't see the way forward
without looking back.
Sometimes we think that theirpurpose or plan or God's calling
or whatever that is in our lifeis just going to lay out like a
path right when we're going tohave 12 stones and we're going
to see the steps and it's goingto be this beautiful yellow
brick road.
But then we get frustrated whenit doesn't.
(06:03):
Or we open the door, we try fora job, we apply for a new
promotion and we get denied andthat is super frustrating and
disappointing which is totallyokay, friend, because hearts
matter but then we dismiss thatdoor closing as an opportunity
for us to simply turn around andlook behind us.
(06:24):
So when we're standing in frontof the door and the door closes
.
That wasn't the way.
That's basically the point ofthe book.
It's not the way and it'ssimple.
At face value, you're like, yeah, totally Of course it's not
the way because the door closed.
But the power in thatperspective is that all you have
to do is turn around and thereare thousands of other ways,
(06:49):
there are thousands of otherpaths, there are thousands of
other opportunities and they'reright there, probably behind you
.
So the first step is to reflect, and we can't always do that
going forward.
Reflection is only when we lookback.
The second is that we have toreconnect, and this is hard
right.
We've been talking a lot aboutvalues this year on the podcast
because they are so important.
So the question is what areyour core values right now and
(07:13):
what matters most to you in thisseason?
I'll just be a little honestand tell you that in this season
of our life, my husband and Iare pivoting our business.
So in the fall of 2024, afterHurricane Helene hit, we felt
called to help and, as many ofyou know, we've served for the
majority of our life in themilitary and the Department of
(07:35):
Defense, space and technologyand communication systems, and
Hubby is ridiculously smart anda skilled network and RF
engineer.
He just is.
He's a craftsman.
God has given him a gift todesign and build things with his
hands, which is not somethingthat I can do.
So I do words, I'm a worder andI feed you, but Hubby is so
(07:59):
incredibly gifted as a designer,as a creator, so he created a
communications kit, a mobilecommunications platform.
Can you just say that Like?
Who does that?
Like on a Friday night in theirbasement.
He did.
He put together all of thesecomponents enterprise level 5G
cellular routers and antennasand Starlink terminals and
(08:23):
batteries and integrated themall into mobile communication
kits that you can put in yourbackpack and you can put into a
small hard shell container andyou can take them and set them
up within two or three minutesand you have this robust
communications architecture thatyou could use almost anywhere
in the world.
And he built it because he hassuch a heart for first
(08:46):
responders and the men and womenwho are leading, like in the
churches or in disaster recoveryand response, who are out there
trying to save people's lives.
And the technology is availableand it's here and it's
commercial, off the shelf, andthere is a way to build it and
put it together, to put it inthe hands of people who actually
(09:07):
need it, at a price and a valuethat's going to make a
difference for them.
And so that was really hisheart.
But it started with aconversation on a Friday night
that our pastor called on aFriday night and said, mark, you
know how to do this, you knowhow to solve these people's
problems.
He said they are in themountains in North Carolina and
they have nothing.
They have no communications, they have nothing.
(09:28):
He said so what if God has madeyou for such a time as this?
And he got up at 430 on Fridayand went downstairs in the
basement and for four months hedidn't go to bed until three
o'clock in the morning and hebuilt a system and a solution.
And so that's what we've beenworking on in the background,
and that one for such a time asthis phone call has shifted our
(09:50):
entire family.
It's shifted our everything, and we are now in this place
where we are launching a newbusiness and product lines and
we're working on patents and allthese things that we know
nothing about.
He quit his job, he resignedfrom his corporate nine to five
so we could go out and do thisthing, and that's super scary
(10:12):
and I don't know what tomorrow'sgoing to bring, but we know in
this season that it's justsomething that the Lord has
called us to and we're superexcited but we're also super
scared.
But that what was important tous.
(10:32):
It's important to us that thatlives are saved.
If I'm just being super honest,it's not a talking point, it's
if one life could be saved byhaving a communications system
in their hand.
When somebody goes in, when afirefighter, first responder,
goes into a house or tries to gointo the woods in a crazy place
(10:55):
where there's nothing there andthere are landslides and
mudslides and all these things, they can walk in and they know
where people are and they canfind them, the people that need
help, and they can rescue themor they can get them out.
Like that matters, right, if itsaves one life, then every
single thing that we didmattered, and that takes a lot
of time, but we know veryclearly, at least from that
(11:15):
perspective, what matters to usand why we're doing what we're
doing.
And so sometimes God will callus to pivot and sometimes God
will call us to lean in faithand walk out in faith and do all
these really hard things.
But we can't do that if wedon't connect or reconnect with
our values and what's importantto us.
So what are your core valuesright now and what matters most
(11:36):
to you in this season?
The third question, or the thirdstep, is to take one small step
.
Maybe it's just a conversation, maybe it's just saying no to
something that you used to sayyes to.
Maybe it's journaling orsitting with God and asking him
to show you what's next.
Maybe it's a phone call fromyour pastor.
Maybe it's sitting at yourneighbor's house on Bible study
(11:58):
night saying we don't have anyidea what we're going to be
doing.
I don't know what it looks likefor you, friend.
For me right now in this season,it's a lot of taking one small
step forward, asking for help, phoning a friend and a lot, a
lot, a lot of prayer and a fewtears, and I'll just offer this.
(12:20):
If you need help with yourprocess, I would love to help
you.
You can take my free leadershipclarity quiz that I have on my
website or schedule a claritycall, and there's no pressure.
I just want to offer the spaceto you so that you can process
and plan just like we're doingas well.
And so here's the reflectionquestion that I want you to ask
(12:41):
yourself today what part of yourlife or leadership feels
misaligned right now, and what'sone small change that you could
make to bring it closer to thelife that God is calling you to
lead?
Sometimes the answer is notdoing something that you've been
doing for a really long timebecause it's not suiting you,
(13:03):
it's not enabling you, it's notgiving life to you.
We all love clarity, but God isalways at work around you and
God is pursuing and continues topursue a loving relationship
with you that is both real andpersonal, and I truly believe
that, friend, and God isinviting you to become involved
(13:25):
with him and his work, and he'sgonna speak through the Bible
and he's gonna speak through theHoly Spirit and through prayer
and circumstances and community, and as he does that, he's gonna
reveal himself and his purposesand his ways.
But he is inviting us to workwith him.
So sometimes, when he does that, it leads us to this crisis of
(13:46):
belief that requires faith andaction, and so we've got to make
some major adjustments in ourlife so that we can join God in
what he's doing, and when wecome to know him by our
experiences, as we obey him.
He will accomplish his workthrough us and I think that's
really a key part of at leastwhat we see in our journey today
(14:07):
for hubby and I.
But there are so many differentreferences and different places
where we see God's hand in ourlife and then we're asking for
the quintessential burning bush,like Moses.
But God is already speaking andI think that's a beautiful
thing that I've seen over thelast few years with his promises
and everything that he's shownme in my writing, everything
(14:30):
that he's shown me with thecenter and now with this new
business adventure.
God is always working.
He's not silent.
He is always moving.
He's always working.
He's not silent.
He is always moving, he'salways speaking and there's
always an invitation for us tostop to reflect on what he's
saying or what he said in thepast, what's going on in our
heart, to reconnect with him.
(14:52):
What does that mean today, inthis place where I work and
serve, and then to take onesmall step forward.
Faith and action, and I think abig part of this courage to
pivot, are the two elements thatwe don't really talk about One
fear, two grief.
Over the course of the nextcouple of months on the podcast
(15:14):
I have some amazing guests whoare going to come in and we're
going to talk about fear offailure and we're going to talk
about making your life workmatter.
So hopefully you'll get someother voices not just me to
share and help reinforce theseideas.
But fear is a real thing, friend.
It's okay we don't like to talkabout it, but it's always there
(15:34):
and it keeps us from movingforward.
And then we also struggle withgrief, and I think that's a big
part of it too.
So if God is calling you toreconsider, a new perspective, a
new adventure, if you are inthe season where you're called
to lay something down, then it'sokay for that.
To be sad, it's okay for you tofeel remorse or regret or any
(16:01):
of those things.
It's okay to grieve the loss, because it's a real thing.
But we can't just stay where weare, we can't stay stagnant.
We have to just trust that Godis bigger, trust that he is
continuing to call us to him,and this promise of God's
restoration is something that Ihave just been digging into as
(16:24):
I'm working on my new bookproject.
So thanks to everybody who'sfilled out the survey and if you
haven't had a chance, let meknow and shoot us a comment or
send a DM.
I'd love to share the survey andget your thoughts, but I'm
digging into God's promise ofrestoration.
What does that actually mean?
What does the word say?
What does it mean in Joel, chapter 2, verse 25, where it
(16:45):
says I will restore to you whatthe locusts have eaten.
And so I think all these thingsare leading us together to a
place I don't know where theyare.
Thanks for joining me on thisadventure, discovery, journey
that I'm on myself, but I justthink there's so much power in
what God is doing, so manypowerful things in his life and
(17:08):
his grace and his love that hegives us each and every day that
we miss, and I truly believethat he cares.
I truly believe that there isan abundance in life and in love
that God has for us, and Itruly believe that there is an
abundance in life and in lovethat God has for us, and I truly
believe that hearts are heavythis season of my life.
I'm learning more and more howto hold joy and sorrow at the
same time, because I truly thinkthat that really is what we
(17:35):
truly experience in life.
You know, we like to say thatthere are peaks and valleys, and
sometimes they're higher orlower than others, but in this
season I've just seen thiscontinuous place of joy and
sorrow.
Things bring me joy and theybring me sadness at the same
time, and I think that's okay.
(17:56):
I'm learning to just sit inthem and not get lost or
consumed by one or the other.
So that's my offering to youtoday, as we reflect what part
of your life or leadership feelsmisaligned right now and what's
one small change that you couldmake to bring it closer to the
life that God is calling you tolead?
Let me know.
Or to the life that God iscalling you to lead, let me know
(18:22):

neck of the woods.

importantly, you are not doingthis alone, friend.
