This first part of the discussion homes in on the viewpoint of the surgeon regarding patients on ICU. Areas of particular focus are who has ownership of their care? Who should know if there is a deterioration? How are decisions made when more than one specialty has a vested interest?
Part 2 will cover common and serious complications affecting the general surgical patient on ICU and how to deal with them.
