One of the most important needs that we each have is to be loved. And a huge part of that is trusting people. When you think about it, you can’t have love without trust. But I don’t think there’s a one of us who’ve lived life thus far without having been betrayed by someone who we thought was worthy of our trust.
Brutus was one of Julius Caesar’s most trusted friends and allies. Yet still, he joined a group of senators who feared Caesar’s growing power and ambition. In 44 BC they assassinated him. That betrayal shocked Rome to such an extent that it ultimately led to the end of the Roman Republic and the rise of the Roman Empire.
Okay, so someone who betrays you or me is unlikely to have such a profound effect on world events, but they will have a profound effect on our lives. There’s still a scar on my heart from the greatest betrayal of my life ... how about you?
Proverbs 20:6 You might call many people your “friends,” but it is hard to find someone who can really be trusted.
From a distance, sugar and salt look the same. It’s not until you get up close, until you taste them, that you can tell the difference. Be careful, be discerning in placing your trust in people. I’m not saying that we shouldn’t trust anyone, but sometimes those who appear to be our friends are anything but!
You may well think of someone as your friend but remember, it’s hard to find someone who can truly be trusted.
