At some point in our lives, I guess we all dream of doing something great. It happens mostly when we’re young and idealistic, but later in life too. Some people will indeed go on to do great things. Others, not so much. But whatever we can achieve in this life, by and large, will be temporary.
The ancient Romans engineered one of the most remarkable infrastructures of the ancient world: aqueducts. These massive stone structures, some spanning hundreds of kilometres, were built to channel fresh water from distant sources to cities across the Roman Empire.
By using a combination of elevated arches and underground covered canals, they ensured a steady supply of clean water for drinking, bathing, and irrigation. The advanced techniques used in their construction, including precise gradients and ingenious hydraulic designs, allowed Roman cities to flourish.
Those aqueducts remain iconic symbols of Roman engineering prowess, many of which are still standing today as testaments to their enduring legacy.
Remarkable though they are however, one day, even they will be gone.
Isaiah 40:6-8 People are like grass. Any glory they enjoy is like a wildflower. When a wind from the LORD blows on them, the grass dies and the flower falls. Yes, all people are like grass. Grass dies and flowers fall, but the word of our God lasts forever.
We live in a day, an age, where for too many the Word of God seems irrelevant. And yet … it will stand forever. And in the here and now, it’s living water to all those who would come and drink of it. It brings life. Take it seriously.
That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
