Have you ever looked at yourself in the mirror and thought, "Well, if I'd made me, I'd have done it differently?" And not just your appearance, but your personality, your family, your suffering along the way, your current situation. What would you have done differently, had you been God?
We don't have to think too long to answer that, because we all have stuff we wish God had done differently in creating us and giving us the life we've led.
So why then do we find ourselves, in effect, disagreeing with God, questioning His choices, wishing He'd done things just a little better? Hold that thought, as we eavesdrop on an Old Testament Prophet praying about this very thing:
Isaiah 64:8 But now, O LORD, you are our Father; we are the clay, and you are our potter; we are all the work of your hand. (ESV)
That verse, that prayer, is a humble acknowledgment that God indeed has the right to shape our lives, and that we belong to Him. It wasn't just some random toss of a coin – who you turned out to be and the life you've lived.
Everything about you was formed by God, lovingly, carefully, with a purpose, just as an artist might form clay into something unique and beautiful on the potter's wheel.
And it's all connected - your gifts, your circumstances, your suffering, your purpose, your journey, your destiny. God is moulding you. Embrace it for you are the work of His hand.
