Imagine that you’re given an hourglass where each grain of sand represents one hour of the time you have left on this earth in this life. You reach out, turn it over, and the sand begins to fall from top to bottom. What are you thinking about right now as you focus on that image?

There are only so many grains of sand left in that hourglass. There are only so many hours left in your life. When they’re gone, they’re gone. It makes you think, doesn’t it? How are you going to spend that time? How are you spending that time?

Should I be watching yet another mildly amusing cat video on TikTok, or getting down on the floor and playing with my children or grandchildren as the case may be?

Should I be watching yet another re-run of my favourite show on Netflix, or listening to what my wife or husband is trying to tell me about their day, how they feel, what’s on their heart?

James 4:13-14 Some of you say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to some city. We will stay there a year, do business, and make money.” Listen, think about this: You don’t know what will happen tomorrow. Your life is like a fog. You can see it for a short time, but then it goes away.

Here’s the truth in this postmodern, over-connected world in which we now find ourselves. Time’s slipping through our fingers while we’re holding onto things that simply don’t matter. Put your smartphone away. Be present … because there goes another grain of sand.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
