Well, as we roll into Easter week, what are you expecting, what are you looking forward to? Perhaps just another long weekend; a bit of a break; a bit more chocolate than you should probably be eating. What are your expectations this Easter?
As mismatched expectations go, I don’t think there’s a greater one than the desire for chocolate Easter eggs on the one hand, and the death of Jesus on that Cross on the other. The two couldn’t be further apart, wouldn’t you agree? So what, if anything, are you expecting?
Back in Jesus’ day, the Israelites … well, they had expectations that were way off the mark as well.
John 6:14-15 The people saw this miraculous sign that Jesus did and said, “He must be the Prophet who is coming into the world.” Jesus knew that the people planned to come get him and make him their king. So he left and went into the hills alone.
They were looking for a cross between one of God’s Prophets and a warrior king (like David) who’d finally boot these wretched Romans out of their Promised Land. They wanted to make Jesus king on their terms.
He did come to be king – but king of our lives, each one of us, not king of a nation. He did come to save – but to save each one of us from our sin, not to save a nation.
So often we only want to receive Him on our terms – to fix our worldly problems, to overcome our wretched roadblocks – but that’s not in the most part why Jesus came. He came for you, to save your life from now into all eternity. He came for you.
That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
