Esta expresión tiene su origen en los barcos veleros que requieren de una gran cantidad de tela para confeccionar sus velas. Estas telas marineras implicaban, por lo general, un gran trabajo y alto costo. En primer lugar, era necesario utilizar grandes cantidades de tela, pero además no podía ser una tela ordinaria, debía ser de alta calidad para resistir el castigo de los elementos. Adicionalmente, este tipo de telas eran de laboriosa confección, tomando en cuenta que inicialmente se confeccionaban a mano.
Es fácil entonces entender por qué la expresión “tela que cortar” hace referencia a temas y proyectos que requieren de un largo y complejo análisis, o que abarcan mucho tiempo, esfuerzo y abundantes recursos.
En Latinoamérica se utiliza específicamente para referirse a los temas complicados que necesitan de una larga conversación para analizar sus diferentes facetas. Cuando una persona le dice a otra que tiene “tela para rato” o “mucha tela que cortar”, le está haciendo saber que hay mucho por discutir.
En España su uso es más amplio y puede referirse incluso a algo costoso: “eso te va a costar tela marinera” o “necesitarás mucha tela para pagar eso”.
Para expresar que aún queda mucho por abarcar en inglés, se puede usar una frase como: To have a lot of ground to cover.
