Les Incompetent

This week on Les Incompetent, we go over Quentin Tarantinos 2019 film "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood," and shows his fairytale ending to what happened in 1969. We go over the themes that are covered, as well as discussing the fairytale aspect of the movie, and what we were robbed in in real life. 

On this weeks episode of Les Incompetent, we go over the 1978 Best Picture winner "The Deer Hunter." A critique on the Vietnam War, while also showing how this war affects a small town in Pennsylvania, this movie is a lot to take in. This movie does a very good job at showing the pain war causes, how war affects men who serve, and how the pain they are feeling can be seen/ felt by their own loved ones. 

On this weeks episode of Les Incompetent, we cover the 1967 oscar winning film "The Graduate." While being a great representation of the Baby Boomers, its also a great look into the Greatest Generation and what they were pushing onto their own children. We cover the impact of characters such as Benjamin Braddock and Mrs. Robinson, and we confront the use of Simon and Garfunkel music throughout this film. 

This week on Les Incompetent, we go over the 1971 film Dirty Harry, starring Clint Eastwood as Harry Callahan, a cop in San Francisco hunting down the serial killer Scorpio. We discuss the similarities to the Zodiac murders, how influential this film in not only pop culture, but on police in general, and how this movie introduces a new type of figure, one that is darker, morally gray, and one who has questionable judgment.

This week on Les Incompetent, we do a deep dive into the music of the 60's and 70's and discuss the huge shift in tone, meaning, and sound. We go over artists like Elvis, the Beach Boys, CCR, Pink Floyd, and Jimi Hendrix. We also talk about the significance of the shift and why it plays a vital role in the anti war effort.

This week on Les Incompetent, we are going to be covering Oliver Stones 1986 film Platoon. We will be covering its legacy, its incredibly deep cast of characters, and its accuracy to the Vietnam War. We will also be discusssing the two sides in the film, and what it means for the evolution of warfare

We go over Johnny Depps performance as the eponymous Jack Sparrow, we go over the references and the pirate lore that are used in the films, and we also discuss how this entire franchise came into being from a small darkride in Anaheim California.

This week, we cover familiar territory about Samuel Bellamy and the crash of the Whydah, we peel away some of the magic we think of when we think of pirates, and we discuss the importance of learning history in a landscape of people forgetting. 

On this weeks episode of Les Incompetent, we go over Chapters 4 and 5 of Eric Dolans book "Black Flags and Blue Waters." We discuss the downfall of Captain Kidd and how Privateering is not a guarantee. We also go over Colonial governorship, supporting piracy and the people that stood up to Pirates like Charles Snead and Cotton Mather.

We discuss the importance of pirates to the American colonies, learn about figures that were excluded from The Pirates Republic, and add more information to our theory about the Golden Age of Piracy being the first "workers revolt."

On this weeks episode of Les Incompetent, we cover Walt Disneys 1950 film "Treasure Island." Considered by many to create the defining and lasting image of pirates we have to this day, we go over what the film does right, wrong, and why Robert Newtons portrayal of Long John Silver is so important in the portrayal of pirates. 

Today, April 14, we celebrate the 113th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic with our good friend and resident Titanic enthusiast Nathan Tehrani. We go over the books "A Night to Remember" and "On a Sea of Glass" as well as discussing differences in the event as opposed to the 1997 blockbuster "Titanic." 

On this weeks episode of Les Incompetent, we finish the last section of Colin Woodards book "The Republic of Pirates." We discuss the fall of Blackbeard, Woodes Rogers fate in England, and the closing on the Golden Age of pirates.
