(00:02):
Hello.
Hi.
Hi.
How are you?
Good.
How are you?
I'm so good.
It's nice to meet you.
It's great to meet you too.
I'm so excited.
Me too.
Thank you for having me.
Of course.
Thank you for joining.
My name is Jack and thisis the Pop Palace Podcast.
Yes.
(00:23):
So we celebrate iconic women and queerpeople in pop music and pop culture.
And I'm in OKC and thenI know you're in Dallas.
And so I was like, She's the perfect fit.
Yeah.
So we love to have ourguests introduce themselves.
So if you could just introduceyourself and tell us a little bit
about how you started in music.
(00:45):
Totally.
So my name is Elise Jewell.
Um, I am 20 now.
Um, I'm a 20 year old popartist, um, from Dallas.
Music has always kind of been somethingthat I've loved and kind of been drawn to.
Um, my aunt was like off Broadwayand then my dad, he was in a band
(01:07):
in college and so they made sure toreally just like throw music my way.
So, I'm a big theater girl as well aslike I love the Beatles and Eric Clapton.
Um, But yeah, I mean, so thenthat kind of inspired me.
And of course, Taylor Swift, shewas like the first big music idol
that like, really, like, I just likethought a connection to, and I had
(01:30):
like all of her CDs and, um, likemy parents, I like made my parents
learn all the words to her songs.
And, uh, and I don't know.
Yeah.
I mean, really, I just havealways felt a connection to music.
So I feel like that's kind of where Istarted and I just always wanted to do it.
Yeah, definitely.
I love that.
I love to get to know like whatreally got people started in music
(01:52):
because some people it's just randomlythey're like, yeah, I was 25 and
one day I picked up guitar or somepeople it's like you're born into it.
Yeah, so your new EP, LoveNow, drops on Valentine's Day.
So exciting!
Was the story behind it, was it planned?
(02:12):
Did you create the song knowing you'regonna drop it on Valentine's Day?
Or was it just like, divine timing?
Oh my god, so there were so manydifferent names for this EP that we
just like went back and forth on.
Um, so Love Now was like, thefirst name that we came up with.
And then, um, originally we wereactually going to drop it in October,
(02:35):
the EP, um, because I also havea song in there called Graveyard.
Um, and, uh, I was like, thiswould be like a really cool, like,
Halloween project, uh, And then weended up pushing it back and we were
just going back and forth because Ithink Gregory is such a cool name.
Um, but then I was like, well, wecan't release it during December
(02:57):
cause that's like holiday season.
And so, um, and I was like, okay, what's like something cool
that I could like spin on this.
Uh, and then I was like, okay,I have a song in there love now.
And I know that I want that tobe like the last song on the EP.
So why not just go backto the original thought?
And then I was like, wait, Valentine'sday is on a February or it's on a Friday.
(03:19):
That's what I meant to say.
Obviously it's in February.
Um, I was like, Valentine'sday is on a Friday and that's
the perfect day to release.
So it was kind of divinetiming slash like semi planned.
Yeah, I love that.
And, like, Valentine's Day, I feel likeit's such a good holiday to pick because
people have, like, a lot of mixed feelingsand strong feelings about Valentine's
(03:43):
Day that, like, other holidays, I feellike, you know, just come and pass, but,
like, you really, yeah, I love that.
And I think that there's a song foreverybody on that EP, like, whether
you're in love or you just got out of arelationship or you're like, screw this, I
don't even want to be anywhere near that.
Um, I kind of have a song for, I feellike, all stages of that type of thing,
(04:05):
so I think it works pretty perfectly too.
Yay!
I love that.
Um, what, if you could like, designatea color you associate with the EP,
what color do you think it would be?
Oh, okay.
I know these are such opposites.
But it really depends.
I think of like, oh, I don't know.
I'd say either purple or red.
(04:27):
Which those are like such oppositecolors, but I really think it's either
purple or like a just like a strong red.
I can't wait to listen to them.
I want to know what colors I think.
Oh my god.
Wait.
Yes, please do.
I'll literally DM you.
I'll be like, okay, I think it was purple.
No, wait.
Yes.
It's like, I feel like, I feel likethere's going to be like a 50 50.
It's like red people.
(04:48):
And then the, and we have like purplepeople and it's like, just depends.
So you've been nominated forbest pop artist in Dallas.
What is the most pop starmoment you've had so far?
Oh my gosh.
Um, you know, I think somethingreally cool is, I mean, being
(05:10):
recognized is always like weird.
Like it's just like, it's like, what?
Like, that's crazy thatyou, um, Recognize me?
That's like something crazy, but I thinkreally it's like whenever I perform and
I see like a kid in the crowd um, andthey just like are just so just like
immersed in the song and then I've hada few kids like come up to me and they
(05:33):
like draw me something and they Bring itto me and I think that it's the cutest
thing ever and I have all of them.
Wait, that's so sweet It makesme feel just like like oh my god.
This is like incredible.
This is so cute Wait, that's so sweet.
I love that.
No, I know.
I think the first one thatI got, I almost cried.
I was like, you drew this for me?
(05:53):
Like, I was like, thank you!
Yeah, and especially with kids, like, they're gonna tell you
the truth, and they're not gonnapay attention to something they
don't want to pay attention to.
No, I know.
Kids can be so harsh, too.
So, I'm like, please think that I'm cool.
That's awesome.
I love that.
So, your songs have such anemotional depth, what's a phrase
(06:14):
or lyric you've written that evensurprised you about how real it was?
Ooh,
ooh!
Um, I have this line in the song Guilty, which came out a few months ago, which
is also going to be on the EP, um, andit's the first song that I've released
(06:38):
that I've written completely by myself.
Everything else I've written withanother person, but um, this is the
first song that I'm releasing thatI've written all by myself, and um,
this is probably like my favorite song.
It's very special to me because Ihad just gotten out of a really,
really bad relationship and it's kindof like me getting my power back.
And the first line in it, um, is,I just realized you won't be at my
(07:03):
birthday for the rest of my years.
And I feel like it can be interpretedin so many different ways.
Like, it could be a good thingor it could be a bad thing.
And I think at the time when I waswriting it, I was just so confused about
how I should feel about this breakup.
And I was just like, oh my god, like, my birthday, like, it's Because
my birthday had just passed and Iwas like, I don't even, like, what
(07:25):
is that going to even look like?
I don't know what the futureis going to look like now.
I love, that's like, thatwas honestly a great answer.
Not that you said it was a bad answer, but that is like, especially birthdays
and like, knowing who's going to bethere, even like, some people have been
at every single one of my birthdays.
And then for them to just not bethere anymore is a weird feeling.
(07:46):
Oh my god, yeah.
And it could be excitingbut also like a little sad.
Yeah and so I think it's just, it'slike, because it's a new year and you're
like wow, like so much has happenedand I don't even know where to start.
Exactly.
So, if you could create a song for likeany movie or TV show, what would you pick?
(08:09):
Is it half?
Yeah, it can be like whatever you want.
Yeah.
Like it can, like it can belike a TV show that's not even,
like that's not going anywhere.
Okay.
Yeah, literally whatever.
I just rewatched Vampire Diaries.
Okay.
Um, so, probably Vampire Diaries.
Um, that show just has a hold on me.
(08:29):
Um, I mean, I mean,David Salvatore, come on.
Um, I would love to write a songfor like, uh, like I imagine, like,
it's like a, it's a dramatic moment.
And like Damon and Elena are havingone of their like dramatic, are
we going to get back together?
Are we going to break up monologues?
(08:50):
And, um, I would love to do that.
Yeah.
I literally am picturingit in my head right now.
Maybe if they do a reboot,I'll like send them your way.
Wait, please.
I would cry.
So when you're creating music, isit more of a linear process for you?
Or is it somewhat abstract wherelike things just come here and here
(09:14):
and kind of form all organically?
I think it's like pretty random.
My brain is so like all over the place.
Um.
And I usually just like have anidea or like an emotion or um,
I tend to write off of stories.
Um That have happened to me.
So It's in a way It's like storytelling.
(09:38):
I mean it is storytelling, but a lot ofthe time like I have these things that
just come to me and then I like sing itin some random melody and I play it to
some random chords and then Um, I justpress record and i'll sing for like five
or even like 10 minutes Just straight onthese like this like same idea and then
i'll go through it and i'll be like, okay, this is good This is terrible.
(09:59):
Um and kind of organize thatand then try again um And that's
kind of like the process that Ido whenever I write by myself.
And then it's kind of similar withother people, but it really just
depends on like who the co writer is.
How do you, when you're workingwith other people, how do
you decide who to work with?
Is it like word of mouth or peopleyou just already knew in your circle?
(10:21):
Yeah.
So for this EP specifically, um, I've beenworking with this producer, Xavier Dunn.
He's incredible for a few years now.
He was on my last EP too.
And, um, He's from Australia.
So we, uh, we do it like online, likeon a zoom call and then he like makes
a demo right there then and there andshare it with me and We kind of just
(10:45):
write together and I found him I DMedhim and I was he produced for one of
my favorite artists Grace and I waslike Hey, would you work with me?
Maybe please and he said yes, andwe've been working together ever
since But I mean, a lot of it'slike I've reached out to people.
So another writer on the EP is TaylorBickett and I found her on TikTok.
(11:09):
She has some incredible stuff and I just,um, I'm in Nashville and I go back and
forth from Nashville and Dallas and she'sin Nashville and I was like, hey, would
you like want to get a coffee and likewrite together sometime or something?
And she said, she said yes.
And then that's how that happened.
But I also have a lot ofsongwriter friends too and we
do a lot of stuff together.
That's so awesome.
(11:29):
I love how like in the music world, you can literally just like text
somebody and then see if they answer.
And sometimes they do.
And it's like the coolest thing everto be able to actually talk to them.
It's literally just like.
Hey, I thought you were cool.
Maybe, can you get a coffee with me?
Maybe, please?
Maybe?
Yeah, literally.
That's how, like, I even end up with, like, most of my guests on my podcast is,
(11:49):
I'm like, Hey, I really like your music.
Do you want to talk for a little bit?
And then, yeah, I get so excited.
And I'm like, Oh my God, thank you.
So what is the, have you foundmore pop people in Nashville
than you have in Dallas?
(12:10):
Honestly, I think yes.
Um, I think Dallas, um, there'sa lot of, I think there's a big,
like, more so alternative or, um,oh, Americana scene, um, in Dallas.
I think that's pretty big.
I mean, there are a lot of, thereare a good amount of pop princesses
(12:31):
in Dallas, don't get me wrong.
But, um, I think in Nashvillespecifically, it's very, um, And
it's very pop and there's a lot ofpeople from LA moving to Dashville.
So, um, I think I know a lot more poppeople, especially what people wanting
to go into like the pop rock realm, which is kind of where I'm at too.
Yeah, but it could also just be likepeople with similar music styles.
(12:54):
Just like like to band together.
I don't know, but a lot of my friendskind of want to do a similar vibe too.
Definitely.
Have you, since you're in Nashville, have you been to, um, Dollyworld yet?
Or Dollywood?
Ugh, no, I haven't.
I have not.
But I love Dolly Parton.
Um, but I want to go so bad, I just, like, have not gotten the time.
(13:19):
But I'm hoping whenever Imove here permanently, I will.
That I will, like, finally be able toactually go and see, like, all the things.
Literally, yeah.
I bet there's so much to see and do.
I've never made it down there, butI want to go to Dollywood so bad.
No, me too.
We should go, we can go together.
Literally, I'll take you.
Let's go.
(13:40):
So, besides music, do you have anyhobbies that you do in your spare time?
Or, like, any, not that music is ahobby, but, like, besides your work,
do you have any things that youdo that, like, To help you relax.
Or take up your time?
Um, yes and no.
So, I mean, I'm just a big, like, socializer, so I a lot of the time
(14:02):
I'll spend, like, all my free timejust hanging out with my friends.
Um, and we just, like, watch movies or Idon't know, just chit chat and be girls.
Um, but I I do like to Go tothe gym and, and work out too.
I've been lacking recently, butI'm going to get so much better.
Um, yes.
Um, but I mean, yeah, mainly just likeI like to work out and I hang out with
(14:26):
my friends and I binge watch TV shows.
Yeah, I love it.
Um, so on a more serious note, since Pop Palace is focused on queer
people and women specifically, hasbeing a woman in the music industry
affected your career based on justbeing a woman that you've noticed?
(14:46):
I think it has.
Um, I started in thisindustry very young too.
And you know, when you're youngand a girl, it's really hard
to get people to listen to.
Your vision and what you want.
Um, i've worked with Some people inthe past who tried basically like
(15:09):
telling me that my idea and what Iwas wanting to do with my art and
my brand, um, was like wrong or bad.
And, um, I ended up still doingthat and it ended up pushing me
forward and, um, it was great.
And so I think, um, yeah,it can be really hard.
(15:32):
You know, there's a lot ofpeople who have a lot to say.
There's a lot of people,um, who have DM'd me.
There's a lot of older men that haveDM'd me and, you know, said some pretty,
said some pretty interesting things.
And so being exposed to that from a youngage and just like being sexualized from a
(15:52):
young age is really just like disturbing.
Um, and I feel like I had to growup on the internet pretty fast.
Um, and just realize, okay, like.
Not everyone is cool and not every personthat wants to like work with you has the
best intentions Yeah, and um, I think it'sreally sad because Sometimes if a person
(16:13):
is talking to me and asking me about mymusic I think that they actually care
about my music and then they ask if I Um,I'm single or not, and then I'm like, no.
And then they just completely likewalk away from me and stop talking.
And I'm like, okay, so you didn'tcare about anything I just said.
You just care that I'm a girl.
And that's, that's it.
(16:34):
really unfortunate because Ithink it's sad when people look
at a woman and they see a womanas a female and not as a person.
Yeah.
Um, and a person that has the capacityto do so many amazing things and,
and so talented and, you know, Andso, to answer your question, um, yes,
(16:57):
I have definitely experienced that.
Yeah, definitely.
And one thing too is, sometimes likethe doubt can also be a motivator.
Is that like something for, does that motivate you at all?
People telling you that like, this isn't good, this isn't
like, A vision I would do.
Yeah, like I, I definitely am like, okay, well now I just have to, you
(17:19):
know, because also like, I mean, I,if somebody is saying like I wouldn't
do that, I'm like, shoot, like,I'm like second guessing myself.
And so I'm like, well, I like in mygut, like, I really want to do this.
So I like.
Have to make this work.
I have to make it good.
Um, because that would just beembarrassing if it didn't I'd be like
shoot Yeah, I totally relate to that.
(17:39):
That's like the whole reason I startedthis podcast too is because I noticed
how dehumanizing and demeaning peopleare to specifically women in pop music
and queer people, but like Yeah, withoutwomen we wouldn't even have like the
same pop music or any of the cultureor like, I don't know I'm just so
obsessed with like women in pop music.
(18:00):
They've saved my life.
They've saved so many people's lives.
Me too, uh, Chapel Rowan Queenlike, obsessed Yeah, so we need
more of that I totally agree.
I know.
I just, I wanna, I wannajoin the pop princess.
I mean, you have pop palace.
It's like the same.
I mean, uh, yeah, I just loveeverything about the pop princess,
(18:22):
just like universe and world.
Me too.
It's so exciting.
And I see it as like how littlekids see like superheroes, but
these people are real life.
No, me too.
Exactly.
I love that.
Okay, so I have one final question.
Okay.
So, at Pop Palace, we'll ask all ofour guests to create a like, royal
(18:43):
court going off the palace theme.
Oh my gosh.
So, who would be on your throne, and then who would be in your court?
Like, three people below them.
So, it's Am I a queen or is it I make?
You're a queen and then you have alittle open chair next to you and
then you have three people below you.
Okay Like I do Want to say that myboyfriend would be my king, but I
(19:09):
also would love to roll alongsidetaylor swift period So unfortunately,
I do fear that I have to picktaylor swift to roll alongside.
I'm so Sorry, cayden
And then I have threepeople on my court Okay.
Easy peasy.
Um, Sabrina Carpenter.
Yes.
(19:30):
Chapel.
Oh, wait.
And then.
Julia Michaels, okay.
I think mm hmm and no man period.
I love it.
Yes Did you see Sabrina andDolly are doing a song together?
Yes.
Oh my god.
I'm so excited.
(19:50):
Yeah, it's gonna be Incredible and likeSabrina has this like amazing country
twang and it's just Gonna be incredible.
Yeah, I'm so excited.
Well, thank you so much for joining me.
It was like, so lovely to meet you.
Um, I can't wait for the EP.
Yeah, let's keep in touch.
If you're ever in Oklahoma, text me.
I'm in Oklahoma City.
(20:11):
It's really random, but somegirls and gays out here too, so.
Yes, thank you so much for having me.
You're so fun.
It was lovely to meet you.
Have a great rest of your day.
You too.
Thank you.
Bye bye.
Bye.
