(00:00):
Okay, so time hashit me like a cinder block in the face.
Welcome back to Everyday Magic.
My name is Shawna and if you are new herewe are a homeschooling family of four.
We are in our eight year of homeschoolingand we are
dipping our toe into the fourth quarter, meaning about the third
quarter of the 2024 2025 year has round.
(00:23):
So much.
So we're going to talk about today.
Before we go
any further, please scrolldown to the nearest internet terminal
and you can see video games, utilitycompany plans
coming together and Instagramat making every day magic.
(00:44):
So when last we checked in,
if you've been following along, we were
we were behind
according to the schedule that I decidedwe should keep.
We were off track.
We were out of sorts.
We were in the middle of one
(01:04):
an absolutely insanekid schedule of things,
that we knew we knew when we got into itthat it was going to be,
but it was going to be.But it was worth it.
And also simultaneously,
at the same time, selling our house and moving
because we're just a gluttonfor punishment.
(01:29):
Now, fast forward,
I worked out a planto get us back on track.
I looked at the schedulingand it felt a little more manageable
than I was allowing myselfto catastrophize
catastrophize catastrophizein the middle of the night.
You know, when you wake up at 2 a.m.,you just can't go back to sleep.
(01:51):
So it was a little better than I thoughtit was.
So third quarter we moved.
We are adjusting.
We are coming down off of that like,
I don't know, fight or flight, like nose to the grindstone.
Everything has to be done.
Just doing our best, doing the bareminimum
(02:12):
and struggling to get the bareminimum done to.
We are now back in the swing of things.
We are back to feeling a little settledand a little rested,
and to doing things for fun.
So I am so happy to reportwe are back into art projects.
(02:32):
We are back into gameplay with the family.
We are back into just
enjoying
the wonderful aspects of homeschool.
So was it terrible doing all this thingsat one time it was.
But I'm glad we didn't stretch it outbecause now we are like
we are recoveringand it is kind of glorious.
(02:52):
So I'm just going to give youa quick rundown of kind of where we are
as far as everything, everythingheading into this last bit of the year.
Now, January, it was long.
Oh my gosh, January lasted for ever
and February is almost doneand I don't know what has happened.
Time is wild right now.
(03:14):
I am going to have a teenager
in a month, so we've got some planningthat needs to happen.
We have not done a good jobof getting back into the swing of things
as far as chores and likeupkeep of the new house are concerned.
But we are finally at a place where
actually I don't actively see any boxes.
(03:36):
So for me that I was like such a big win.
But I need to get back into that habitof like maintaining our home.
And I am honestly so excited to do it.
Like, it feels so good to just have like,
you know, to just have to clean the toiletinstead of like also unpacking boxes
and hoping our kids are settled
and hanging things on the walland measure it perfectly.
So that is kind of glorious.
(03:57):
My kids are also coming around.
They my oldest has had
multiple times that
it feels good to just have like stuffto do again, like stuff that isn't like.
So if you have to do but like stuffyou want to do and that is so good.
I'm so excitedto be heading into time change.
I feel like my sleephas been kind of all over the map,
(04:20):
and I am so excitedto be heading into spring.
Right now it is grayand gross and overcast outside, but
we are one block off of an amazing parkand I'm so excited to get out and start
doing things out in the sunshine again,so I am very excited about that.
None of that has anything to dowith what you came here
for, but it is on my mindand therefore I get to share it with you
so that now, as far as homeschool goes,
(04:43):
I am taking this little next bit of timeand one of the videos
that I'm hoping to filmreally soon is thinking ahead,
because I have been thinking aheadlike I'm in that place where my brain is
free enough that I can start thinkingahead, and I have some things coming up.
I think for next year they're going to bea little bit different.
And so I'm excited to share that with you.
(05:04):
Now Michael KlayThompson is going really, really well.
My youngest. We've all started poetry.
We are almost to the secondpoint paper with my big head
I am I
am very excited about this programI love it.
They've my oldest has finishedher required reading
which is a little bit of a struggle bus.
(05:26):
But we we kind of got a little firmand gave some hard deadlines,
you know, ten pages a day.Let's talk about it tomorrow, every day.
And they got it done.
So she got it done. And she read it to her sister.
So I keep saying they, that it was good.
And so I'm glad that we got that wrapped.
We are coming into that seasonwhere things are starting to slow down.
So my little oneactually this week is taking her last.
(05:51):
Like Matthew C test beforegetting into that last chunk of lessons,
her division skills have improved so much.
Dividing with remainders, dividing, leaving a fraction.
You know,
we're where we are right nowis one digit into three digit.
But that is, I think after the testthat goes up to like two digit
(06:12):
into three and four digit.
So we're going to see how that goes.
And then my big head at switching toDenison was just the best thing ever.
She's done so, so well with that. So well.
And I'm so thankful.
Yeah, we're doing pretty well.
Okay. We are doing pretty well.
Spelling for my little one is truckingright along, reinforcing that
(06:34):
those kind of sonograms that we learnedwith the All About Reading program.
So that's going really well.
I recently shared about my Frankenspelling of marrying the to the
the older all about spelling
with the newer color version and how I'mkind of like mish mash in that together.
It's working well.
My littleone is also added and I recently shared
about the Even More Animals workbook, and so she just took it upon herself
(06:55):
to add that in because she just loves itso much, which is great.
So now I've got like,a little wobbly penguin and like, a tree
frog with like, an extended tongue, thingsall over my house.
You know, as it should be.
So, yes, third quarter has been very good.
We are back on track.
Are we going to finish intime to go on a spring vacation?
(07:20):
I don't know, but I'm motivated nowand I feel like we can.
So I am hoping that we will wrap
at our normal about kind of like mid-May.
And if not, we just might finishwhen we get back from a vacation.
I am okay with that.
It doesn't have to be all or nothing.
If there is anythingthat the 2024 2025 school
(07:41):
year has taught me,it is flexibility and grace.
I just have to be a bit more flexiblewhen it comes to our homeschool,
and I am taking that lesson forward.
So when you come here
probably in March and see
my video, I guess it's let's videogo up in March when you come here and see
what I am thinking ahead for it,then you will understand.
(08:04):
I will make a little bit more sense
this third quarter,
second and third quarter really get kindof middle half of the year.
Really, really humbled me in my homeschool journey
and taught me some incrediblyvaluable lessons and more so than ever.
I am so thankful for homeschool and
the flexibility and gracethat it affords my family.
(08:27):
Absolutely huge.
Couldn't trade it in. It's wonderful.
So that now
looking ahead to fourth quarter,I am excited that things are starting to
wrap up.
So we are doing this week actually
our last like chapter tasks
before we get into the last, which is chapter six of chemistry.
(08:49):
And I think I'm going to do another videoon the chemistry,
and let you know if it was worth it.
So that
I am very
pleased with like filmstudy has been going amazingly well.
It's also really funto watch some of these videos that either
I haven't watched in a really long time,like ET
(09:10):
or The Pursuit of Happiness,or things I have never seen,
like, Lemons and The Outsidersand then looking at that
is something my husband and I actually didwhen we were dating for fun is
we got the list from Turner Classic Moviesand the 100 Greatest Movies of All Time,
and we watched all of them.
(09:30):
And like, I had to source some movies, like from Korea.
Like probably some reallyquestionable copies of these things. But
I really enjoy
looking at things through the lens
of when they were made.
So the 100 Greatest Movies of All time, you have to look at and you're like, man,
(09:50):
that's not a great movie, butyou have to think about it in the context
of when it was releasedand this film study program is doing that.
I also think it's really funbecause I do come here
and produce videos and edit videos,
and I've got the ring lightand I've got the cameras
and the microphonesand all of those things.
Having my kids learn more about that,I think is really fun.
(10:11):
It's something that we can shareand it's something
that, you know, when they're talkingabout all the different kinds of cameras.
I'm like, okay, so I literally haveevery single kind of one of that.
So I've got the old school camcorder
and we've got the dSLRthat also shoots video,
and then we've got the videocameras and phones
and then the different microphonesand like I think that's really fun
and I'm super excited to have them workon this film project together.
I think that we are going to have to meetour expectations with that, though,
(10:35):
because I do havea bit of a firstborn daughter
who wants to do everything exactlythe way she wants to do it,
and I just don't knowthat we will be able to produce
that to the elaborate quality that she ishoping to have it produced you.
So I just don't know if that's possible.
Now, also, on that note, which makes me think of that going
(10:55):
into the fourthquarter, fourth quarter gets busier.
So we do
have, you know, spring production for my oldest.
And we also do have cookie seasonbecause we do brownies now.
And and it is also the seasonwhen things are ramping up as far as fun
and amazing things to get outand do homeschool days, classes.
(11:17):
It just it is a wonderful, wonderful season going into spring.
So I am very happy.
I am excited looking ahead
to fourth quarter, and I am optimisticabout the trajectory of our school year,
which last update,I didn't know if I could give you that.
So that I think for meis going to be the win.
That might be the winner. The whole dang year is that we did it.
(11:38):
We came, we saw, we conquered,
and at the end of the daywe learned something.
But we also
enjoyed it a bitso that that just might be you know what?
That's where I'm gonna leave this video.
That's the win for me.
So end of third quarterheading into fourth quarter.
That's the win guys I hope thatyou appreciate what I am sharing today.
(11:58):
I hope that you found ithelpful, entertaining, informative.

I feel like my updateshave taken this weird shift into like,
emotional venting, and I think that's justwhat had to happen this year.
If you've seen any of my updates
(12:20):
over the last five years,I don't think it was ever quite this way.
But it is now.
So that's just that's just 2024,2025 school year in a nutshell. So
yeah, I don't know.
I'm looking really forward to the recaps.
And the recapsare going to start coming soon in April.
I'm excited. I'mlooking forward to planning ahead.
Something else we've got coming upis if you were to start now,
because I knowpolitical climate is shifting,
(12:43):
and I think there's gonna be a lotmore people
choosing this way of lifewho, maybe are secular like we are.
So I'm excited.
I'm excited of all the things comingup. We've got big things coming up.
Don't forget, guys,I do release a monthly newsletter
through my website, and I do have that link down below.
But you can sign up and you can,
(13:05):
you can get access basicallya little bit of a recap from them before,
but also a little bit of what's comingahead, as well as a really condensed
list of all of the linksand offers that I have to give to you.
If you are curious.
I am sharing all places all the time.
So I've got a podcast that goes up weekly, based on a discussion
topic from me and older more recent.
(13:28):
I am sharing all those videos that you seethis week.
Next week will be released in blogformat over on my website. So.
And I'm posting to social mediaall the time.
So there are a lot of waysfor you to get in touch with me.
I have a little bit of an ideawhich I will probably field test
in my next newsletter.

Those are those are rough.
Those are some rough couple months roughcouple quarters.
But I am so excited.
We are headed into fourth quarterand I could not be more
(14:09):
thrilled or feel betterabout our placement right now.
