However, his big break came in 1997 when he was cast as Johnny Rico in Paul Verhoeven's "Starship Troopers". This role catapulted him to fame and led to other significant parts, including:

  • Tarzan in "Tarzan and the Lost City" (1998)
  • Brom von Brunt in Tim Burton's "Sleepy Hollow" (1999)
  • James Dean in the TV movie "James Dean: Race with Destiny" (1997)

While Van Dien has appeared in over 100 films and TV series, he remains most closely associated with his role in "Starship Troopers."
