In de nacht van 10 op 11 april wordt uit de Sint Bavo kathedraal in Gent een 15e eeuws meesterwerk gestolen: een zijpaneel van het altaarstuk Het Lam Gods van de gebroeders Van Eyk uit 1432. Wat volgt leest als een misdaadroman: er zijn dreigbrieven, losgeld, doodsbedbekentenissen, geheime codes, internationale samenzweringen, tempeliers, nazi's, een kaasdiefstal en … Moord.
Bijna honderd jaar na de diefstal is het paneel nog steeds niet boven water. Is het paneel verstopt in een bunker, ingemetseld in een kerk, verborgen in een kelder van een rijke Belgische familie of... Is het antwoord uiteindelijk te vinden in de tombe van koning Albert I van België?
