(00:00):
Foreign.

(00:22):
followed by fun.
Facts and trivia from timelessclassics to cult favorites to the
latest releases.
So grab some popcorn and let'sjump into this week's movie.
Okay.
Minecraft movie last episode.
We didn't mention this becausewe didn't know we're gonna do it.
We went to the cinema to watchMinecraft Cinema trip.
Yeah.
And some people showed up, our fans.
(00:45):
It was incredible.
We put out a cry and somepeople actually showed up.
Sent my social anxiety throughthe roof.
But it's okay.
So yeah, it's just a spare ofthe month thing.
It was on.
Everyone was buzzing about it,so we had to see it.
We're also making a fewchanges and then we're making the
episodes shorter.
Yes.
Sometimes shorter is better.
Yeah.
So we're just.
Because they were pushing on50 minutes initially started like
(01:05):
that's too much.
30 to 40 minutes.
We movies in a nutshell.
We need to deliver this in a nutshell.
Yeah.
So just let's get to the point quicker.
So yeah, we carried away.
Maybe, maybe we may have tocut some things that we do need to
cut.
So you can tell us listeners, once you've listened to this episode,
let us know what you think.
Is that a good choice or a bad choice?
Yeah, we've streamlined it.
We made it a bit shorter.
Let us know what you think and.
Shout out to Kieran and Zarawho were our.
(01:27):
Yeah, they came down.
It was good.
It was good fun.
It was good to chat to themand meet some people who listen to
the show.
We'll do it again.
There's.
I think we worked out there'sthree months, other months in this
calendar year that have five Tuesdays.
So we'll.
Three of the towns all got the same.
I think it was July, Septemberand December.
Okay, we'll got the summer again.
Whatever's on at the time.
(01:47):
I feel like I need to do thatin voiceover movie months.
There you go.
We'll do that.
Right.
Then let's break down aMinecraft movie.
In part one, we have thesynopsis where we look at the actual
synopsis and see how it sellsthe film, what we make of it.
And then we break the moviedown for you guys.
So let's start with the synopsis.
I'll read the officialsynopsis out.
Garrett, Henry, Natalie andDawn are transported through a mysterious
(02:10):
portal into a fully cubicworld to return home.
They must survive and masterthis new environment, aided by Steve,
an expert crafter who was oncea resident of the real world.
Yeah, no, it's awful.
Yeah.
It doesn't really give you anyidea of what it's about.
No, it doesn't even paint apicture in a world.
Sorry, I keep doing that.
It didn't even say the name.
(02:31):
Video game or computer game.
No, nope, it didn't really.
That was pretty boring.
It didn't entice you written down.
That's pretty dull.
It's unbelievably dull.
I'd be curious comparing it tothe Jumanji synopsis because I would
imagine Jumanji would have.
Because it's basically this asimilar thing, isn't it?
Yeah.
Well, that's what I wasexpecting from it going in.
(02:53):
Just from maybe the postersand the trailers, that kind of thing.
Yeah, totally.
Instead of Robin Williams, weget Jack Black.
Yeah, yeah.
More than a game.
More than a game.
They could have used that tm.
This is why you should begetting the big bucks.
I know, right?
Minecraft, it's more than the game.
It's in the game.
It's in the game.
(03:13):
I have a feeling maybe SuperMario have already done this, but
never mind.
Maybe that's what's in my head.
If you think you can dobetter, please write your synopsis
for Minecraft and send it in.
Yeah, we'll read it out.
There won't be a present.
Okay, who's in it?
Who's in it?
Who?
We got Jack Black, Jason Momoa.
Yeah, there's the best friendin Wednesday.
I forgot Jennifer Coolidge.
Jennifer Coolidge.
Jennifer Coolidge.
(03:33):
Yes.
Okay, in a nutshell, what isthis movie about?
Based off the popular videogame Minecraft, which I knew nothing
about going into the cinema,so I can't really tell you much about
it, but that's what it's based off.
Some people get sucked into aparallel world of creativity and
block building fun, which istrying to be overtaken by another
(03:54):
world of evil miniature pigs.
This sounds like I'm makingthis up.
But this is actually came froma video game.
So this is actually the thing, isn't it?
Yeah.
Would you describe them as agroup of misfits?
Yeah.
No, I mean it's trying to saythey are because they're creative.
So they're.
Oh, it's hard being creativebecause you don't fit in.
And my middle brother doesn'treally fit in because he's seen as
(04:14):
an oddball.
Well, I work in an art College.
This isn't true with the cool people.
What the hell?
I think that's what it triesto say through it, I guess a band
of kind of misfits, I guess.
But I suppose they stumbleinto the game world and they've got
to learn to create to survive.
Creativity is kind of their.
Their way out.
Yeah.
Yes.
As they survive on.
The more creative you are, thebetter chances of getting out.
(04:36):
Yeah, totally.
And it's also saying that, youknow, if you're creative, you're
a misfit.
But also if you playMinecraft, you're a misfit.
What?
Minecraft is one of thebiggest games on the entire.
Loads of people play it.
But it is talking about theimportance of creat.
Creativity.
And what's quite nice is it'stalking about how hard it is and
creativity is.
It's so challenging for peoplebecause if you're a musician, you
start with a blank page.
(04:56):
And that's a writer.
You start with the blank page.
A filmmaker, you start with ablank page and then you build from
there.
And it's never as good as thething in your head.
Yeah.
You know, and it's just acontinual loop of disappointment
being created or creating artand not connecting to an audience.
It's a really.
It's a big, big struggle.
We're making this sound likequite an academic movie when actually
it's a video game movie.
(05:18):
That's big daft comedy of.
So we'll say.
We'll say misfits maybe justfor that.
Everything Darren said.
Yes.
But to nutshell it, we'll say misfits.
There's a.
Basically a guy who used to bea video game champion, like at the
arcades.
So think maybe Tron.
And he gets sucked in.
And then there's Jack Black's character.
(05:38):
He looks like he was stuck.
I don't want to give spoilers away.
He's been stuck in there for along time.
He gets stuck in the game.
It's similar to Tron.
So the parallels, I would say is.
This is a difficult one not to spoil.
It is.
But it's.
The parallels, I think are ifyou like other world sort of stuff
like Tron or Jumanji, wherethey get sucked into another universe.
Even the first Super MarioBrothers, where there's a parallel
(06:00):
universe in that.
So if you like them sort of things.
So maybe touching on a bit theMarvel stuff, bit of the Doctor Strange
or the portals, that kind of thing.
But you're also right, ittalks about peeking too early and
particularly being it's also.
It's a weird theme to have, but it's a theme about being an older
guy who peaked in your teensand when you were younger.
Those are the best times.
And now you're struggling with loneliness.
(06:21):
Like I did not expect that tobe in the Minecraft movie.
Yeah.
So what do you expect when yougo expect Jack Black.
Craziness, Chaos.
Video game references and someof the themes that were on about
as well.
Yeah.
So they team up with Steve inwhat they call is the overworld.
Is that the main world there?
Minecraft.
They've got to face challengesto building their way through.
But like they come across thepiglin queen.
(06:43):
Malgosha.
You're doing very wellremembering all these.
And he doesn't have his noteson this.
He's actually remembering these.
I'm impressed.
So she threatens not only theMinecraft world but their route home.
Yeah.
So that's what they.
That's what they're.
And basically create in that world.
You can create anythingbecause creativity is.
Because the creativity was stunted.
Right.
Which isn't that the story of Hitler?
Like he was a.
(07:03):
I never thought.
We'D go there with my friends.
Wow.
Wow.
Wasn't he an artist?
He didn't.
Art college in Austria or somewhere.
And he wasn't successful so heinvaded the rest of Europe.
I feel like that should be inthe next bit.
But hey, we've hit there early.
Listener.
We've hit there early.
We need to ping something thatother podcasts aren't going to say.
I know they're not going to say.
It usually comes from you tobe fair.
(07:24):
Very true.
That's why.
So keep you around.
So there's also bits of theplot again which all leads into those
other kind of films wherethere's a crystal that goes inside
another crystal that opens theportal to the other the world.
And then that world could bein danger from being destroyed by
the baddies.
And there's goodies and sothere's a lot of that kind of.
Which you find in video gamemovies, I suppose.
Quite a bit.
Had a bit of Minions vibes.
(07:45):
Bit of Minions, yeah.
Yeah.
With all the little charactersand the.
Casual violence between them.
Yeah, that's true.
It was always fun to see a bigpiglin kick a little piglin and see
him hurt across the screen.
Yeah, that is true.
It's a very CGI computergenerated imagery, special effects
driven movie.
Though if you're not into thatkind of film, you probably won't
(08:07):
get much out.
I don't think you would haveto have played the game to watch
this movie.
Well, nothing you would haveto make a difference.
Have you played the game then?
I did.
I played it.
I played it quite a bit whenit first came out, which is what,
over 10 years ago now?
Again this afternoon.
Oh, wow.
Okay.
I've never played it, so I'venot played it since.
But yeah, I've realized it wasmore aimed at children, but I recognized,
(08:27):
I recognized the creativityside of it.
Like, wow, you can literallycreate anything which is great for
younger people in that, inthat sort of environment.
We call this a kids film, then.
Family film.
Kids family film, I would say.
Okay.
But also Minecraft's doinggreat things with education, I'm
sure.
Yeah, yeah.
But also, I'm sure people havebuilt a gigantic library in a Minecraft
server where it hosts all thebanned journalistic kind of stories
(08:50):
from across the world.
So if you're a journalist inlike Russia or, you know, around
probably even America at thispoint, and your stories aren't getting
published, they're hosted inthis massive kind of library so you
can go and access.
It's basically freedom of likepress, freedom of speech.
And Minecraft is doing that, you know.
So it's in the sandbox of theMinecraft world.
Yeah.
I don't know.
Obviously I'm not 47 years old.
(09:11):
I'm not savvy with thelanguage here, but I don't know the
kids whether you can kind ofgo access it.
But yeah, it's a creative tool.
It's unbelievable.
And it's what people, they'regiven like those sandbox games where
the audience or the playersget to get to decide how they're
going to use it.
Yeah, I just love games like that.
Yeah, no, it's good.
I get the appeal of it.
That's why it's still going today.
I know.
(09:31):
So whenever I've been, when Iwas playing it, you know, like, like
you said eight, 10 years ago, whenever I was ill, off work with
flu, this is a game I'd play.
Yeah, it was just relaxing.
And then sometimes when youcould team up with a buddy and you
could both create something.
No, I had no friends.
But that is part of the appealof it as well as the sense of community
as well.
So if someone was introverted, does not like no social skills, they
(09:51):
could still do this onlinewith someone and have gained friends
in the community.
Yeah.
And.
And it is making big, big money.
So I wonder if that's relatedto the fans of the game, like some
of the other movie video Gamesor whether it's just caught in the
culture.
Or do kids just love anythingMinecraft and they've all forced
their parents to go and see it.
Quite possibly.
But it's making big money.
Every parent I've asked, haveyou seen Minecraft?
Yes, twice.
(10:13):
And of course the other, theother bit is.
I guess there is a healthydose of Jack Black in here.
Yeah.
Singing at times as well.
So if you're a Tenacious Dfan, maybe it's for you.
He was definite the rightcharacter singing.
About lab a chicken at onepoint become like a chicken.
Chicken jockey.
Yeah, and chicken jockey andall these things.
So there's lots of randomstuff in the mix.
It's a very random comedy kindof that.
(10:34):
Random comedy, isn't it?
Yeah, I think it made sense tome a little bit more because I'd
seen that I played the game.
Okay, maybe someone who hasn't.
Older people, if you're likenot that a different generation you
hadn't played the game, you'dbe kind of like it'd be a bit bemused
by it.
There's like something like a10 or 15 minute intro there, isn't
there?
And it's called like a legendwhere they can.
Well, usually a legend is whenit's text on screen.
(10:56):
Falcon or Star Wars.
Yes, something like that.
Whereas it's Jack Black'sdoing the voiceover, isn't it?
And he's like, so this is mystory and it's like 10, 15 minutes.
So it's going to bring you,it's going to bring you up to speed
as to what's going on.
And it sounds like if you havechildren who like Minecraft, it doesn't
matter what we say in thisnutshell, you'll be dragged to see
this film.
Okay, so we move into part two.
(11:23):
So part two is the unboxing.
In part two we have.
What did we miss?
We will challenge the ways ofthis movie, revealing hidden details
and overlooked moments.
And in Facts of the Day, Paulshares his behind the scenes trivia
and interesting facts.
That's still a very good punon my name, by the way.
In what do we think?
This is where we finally shareour thoughts on the movie.
So let's begin with what didwe miss?
(11:44):
It's hard to say.
It is hard to say.
I literally just seen it andwe've only seen the once is about,
I.
Think the importance of creativity.
And there is a hero's journeyin this where people.
It's also where people kind ofdevelop their skills and creativity
Learn how they're important.
And then you know, one of thecharacters is then the self defense
instructor at the end becauseshe's learned how to like be brave
and stuff.
(12:05):
I was surprised to see thatmale loneliness element of it and
I'm curious about that becausein a way you look at Minecraft players
as being quite geeky.
And I'm sure I read a storyyears ago that the Minecraft inventor
is quite lonely now and helives in like.
Like he got billion.
Is it Mojang?
Is it the.
The company that does.
(12:25):
I remember.
I'm sure I read that he hadbasically like an aquarium the size
of this room in his mansionand he had divers that would clean
it and stuff.
This is a big room room by the way.
It's a hole.
Imagine a Bond villain lair.
That's kind of what's up.
Yeah.
And the door keeps closing on us.
It's scary.
Yeah.
But that.
(12:45):
But I wonder if there's likean element of that.
Particularly male gamers lonely.
Particularly in Minecraft.
Like you did say you can playat co op, but.
Yeah.
Does everyone do that?
So I'm just curious.
Yeah.
It's like the online side ofopen world.
Like massively mmo, they callit massively multiplayer online.
But it's also a story about abroken family which feels.
Although that girl is insanely young.
Why is that 12 year olddriving a car?
(13:06):
Yeah, I think that.
Yeah.
Like she's not responsible adult.
Recognize the actress from Wednesday?
That's.
I didn't catch that.
She's very blonde in Wednesday.
That's her best friend, isn't it?
Who?
He's like her roommate.
That's her.
Emma.
Name's gone up my head.
I'm gonna research it.
But there's, there's anelement of like broken families there.
(13:27):
Like we don't really.
When mum's passed on is Ithink what it established.
We don't know.
Yeah.
So it is about just overcomingthe kind of limitations that you're
giving with, with life.
Yeah.
And like how are you going toengage with life again?
How are you going to grow in America?
Haven't you got to be 21 todrink and drive Norway?
She's 21.
What's going on there?
Unless she just looked young.
(13:47):
I'm not sure.
Maybe there's the othercharacter who comes in who's doing
all these side hustles.
Oh yeah.
She's got exotic animals or something.
Yeah.
And I'm trying to figure outhow she's fitting in because she
hasn't quite Found a purpose.
So she's doing all these sidesof the zeitgeist.
Now everyone's talking aboutside hustles.
Like, this is a side hustlefor us.
Musician.
That's your side hustle.
(14:07):
Like, we're in a world nowwhere you can't exist with one job.
Yeah, yeah.
Hashtag side hustle.
Yeah.
Particularly if you want toget financial freedom or have options.
It's harder now.
So.
So I think there's a lot ofstuff going on in this movie.
Yeah, there's also.
Which I don't quite get.
The divorce story, theJennifer Coolidge story.
That felt very random.
But.
(14:27):
Yeah.
And it feels.
It felt like a parallel narrative.
It felt like it was doing itsown thing and had nothing to do with
anyone else.
But again, was that aboutloneliness and finding someone as
well?
Maybe.
Maybe that was the way.
And accepting others who don'tlook like you.
And any Matt Berry fans.
Just stick around for the credits.
What did Matt Perry do in the credits?
Yeah, you.
I think you went to the toiletat that point.
(14:48):
You went to the toilet.
I missed the best part of the movie.
It was my favorite.
Tell him what he missed.
So there's a character we'rein spoiler zone for.
Okay.
We're in spoiler zone.
The character who came throughfrom Minecraft World, who spent the
whole film being like, that'smy best impression I can do.
He finally spoke at the end.
Finally speaks.
But it's Matt Berry.
Did he say mother?
(15:08):
Well, no.
He was like, I have learned todo the thing.
I can't remember what he said, but very Matt Berry.
It's my favorite part.
Me and Paul just looked at itand just started laughing.
And like, we were both.
I could tell.
We're thinking, Dan's fuckedup here.
It's like, he would have lovedthis bit.
So.
Oh, my God.
That really funny.
You have to watch it allagain, Darren.
(15:28):
Anyway.
Anyway, the side story, likeyou say.
But maybe that was aboutconnection as well.
Maybe that's the theme.
Connection.
Because they connected witheach other.
There's the loneliness.
And then she.
Obviously, she divorced.
Oh.
It turned out she divorced theother teacher who was in it as well.
That was kind of a.
And it is.
And it goes back to.
Who's the queen of the Piglins called?
Like, she tries to dance andgets laughed at.
(15:50):
Right.
Piglin Queen Malgosia.
Yeah.
So her backstory is the factshe was on, like, the pig version
of Pop Idol.
American Idol.
No, no.
Weird thing.
Yeah, Go for it.
So this story is about aCharacter who dances and gets mocked,
and so she decides she's goingto destroy all creativity.
And it's directed by JaredHess, whose first movie was Napoleon
(16:14):
Dynamite, which is famous forhaving a dance scene which is kind
of mocked.
Yeah.
Still haven't seen Napoleon Dynamite.
Don't judge me.
We need to put on the list.
I need to get on the list.
Yeah.
But that's interesting, though, that he threaded that through
then.
Yeah, Yeah.
I feel like when Jared Hesswas young, he may have had some experiences.
Yeah, he was mocked.
You know what this movie needs?
(16:35):
I think we need the dance thing.
You should not mock people whodon't dance in terms of societal
norm.
Okay.
Anything else to add?
The other bit is.
Feels like what we said in thefirst bit, or I was saying it's a
bit like Tron.
It's a bit like Jumanji.
It's a bit.
So in some ways it felt like abit of a mishmash of some of them
different ideas put into one.
(16:55):
So Jason Momoa.
How did I say it before?
It made Darren laugh.
Jason Momoa, his character isvery much like Jeff Bridges almost
in Tron, where he's the arcadegamer and he gets sucked into the
other world.
And Jack Black's character,he's in an office and he's kind of
(17:15):
bored with normal life.
How he knows about the minesin the first place.
There's a.
There's a few things where youhave to just suspend your disbelief,
obviously, and think.
He's like, I wanted to work inthe mines.
It's like, how did you evenknow about them?
What did.
Anyway?
So it just feels to me like itwas, let's put that in and let's
put this in, and it's kind oflots of different elements all put
(17:36):
together.
And sometimes I was thinking, like, why have they got all these
different characters?
But maybe like we said before, the bit we're missing is that thread
between all the characters of.
They're all a bit lost.
They all haven't found themselves.
Misfits create this gang, butthey're not the Goonies.
And then there's random thingsand you might be able to confirm
(17:58):
this.
I meant to ask, in the game, does it do this thing where it goes.
It's in the game.
Does it go dark?
Yeah.
You have to sort of getshelter and hide from all this weird
stuff.
Without knowing about thegame, I was just a bit like, oh,
yeah, that's random, isn't it?
It's like 20 minutes.
Like, I played it for 20 minutes.
Yeah.
When he said that.
That did make me laugh becauseI was like, oh, yeah, that's exactly
(18:18):
how it feels.
Yeah.
So that's very much for thegame as the reference.
It's a race.
As soon as you notice the, like, starting to diminish.
I better get this building finished.
Get a little closer.
Create a door so I can protect myself.
Just dig a cave in a wall andput a door in it.
Yeah, you just dig a hole andI put, like a door, like a mesh thing
on the side.
They don't really explain itin the film.
They're just like, oh, yes.
Every 20 minutes and it'sgenuinely scary.
All these zombies come out andyou can hear the, like, different
(18:40):
monsters, weird.
Sound effects, like, oh, thatdoesn't sound good.
Oh, my God.
Okay.
Oh, actually, there was.
It makes more sense now.
There was it that you can play on.
What's it called in you.
You.
If you die, you die.
Like survival mode before,isn't it?
There's this guy who had beenplaying that, I think for years,
like two years, three years, and he would live stream and then
he just made, like a rookiemistake and died.
(19:02):
And his response on, like, live chat, he just went quiet and
welled up and he's like, notlike this.
And all the chat was just positive.
Just like, so kind.
Just like.
But also, what a metaphor for life.
Like, how many of us are gonnadie and be like.
And our last thought is goingto be like, not like this.
Like.
(19:23):
Okay, let's move on to factsof the day.
What have you got for us, Paul?
There's not that many.
Okay.
It's fairly new, so therewon't be.
Too many because it's not that many.
But there's a few, of course.
So this film was originallygoing to be directed by Shawn Levy,
but he left the project afterdisagreements with the Minecraft
developers, as they thoughthis idea did not suit the game.
So I can see Shawn Levydirecting something.
(19:44):
He obviously directed Deadpool vs.
Wolverine and he directedStranger Things some of the episodes.
I think he's a producer onStranger Things as well.
Still, is it Free Guy?
The Ryan Reynolds nonsense?
Night in the museum, Night atthe museum.
So I could see why they wouldgo for Sean.
This is kind of very much inhis wheelhouse.
Yes.
But, yeah, there you go.
They thought his idea did notsuit the game.
(20:05):
So not for Sean.
This is one Darren said before.
There's many references, apparently, to Napoleon Dynamite.
Not just the one you said, apparently.
The troublesome alpacas.
Okay.
The storing of the tater totsin pants pockets.
Okay.
And the self defense training dojo.
So Jared Hess fancies himselfa bit of an auteur.
Just.
There you go.
Referencing his own work.
(20:26):
Just saying.
And it's the secondcollaboration between Jet Black and
him after Nacho Libre in 2006.
Nacho Libra was 19 years ago.
Okay, that's scary.
Oh, this was an interestingone because I know you like It's
Always Sunny in Philadelphiaas well though.
Quality show, Rob.
I can't pronounce his second name.
Help me, Michelini.
Thank you.
Was hired to direct the filmbut dropped out due to creative differences.
(20:48):
There's a few of these.
Creative differences.
Yes.
I think I know what thecreative differences are, but I'll
tell you in the next segment.
Oh, excellent.
I look forward to that.
Matt Berry.
Yeah, this is the bit whereyou don't go to the toilet just as
the credits come on becauseyou'll miss Darren.
Matt's Matt's thing.
He was originally meant toplay Steve in a Minecraft movie as
well.
Unfortunately, this didn't endup happening due to scheduling issues.
(21:10):
Creative differences.
Scheduling issues.
On this one, it says at thesame time, for filming a Minecraft
movie, he was already busyshooting the last season of what
we did in the Shadows.
Nice show.
Couple more.
Yeah, go for it, go for it.
Okay, a couple more.
Jack Black was set to onlyappear as a cameo in the form of
a talking pig.
But Due to the 2023 Hollywoodlabor disputes, Black took over the
(21:33):
role of Steve after Matt Berryhad to take the role.
So maybe that's where they hadthe cameo because he couldn't do
the full roll and he kind ofput his voice in at the end.
And this is one for yougamers, I suppose.
A pig.
I knew nothing of this, butyou might know a pig with a crown
can be seen at a point duringthe movie.
This is a reference totechnoblade, a beloved YouTuber who
(21:54):
popularized the Minecraftcombat and made primarily Minecraft
centered videos on his channel.
Has any of you guys heard of Technoblade?
No, I was aware of this.
Yep.
So unfortunately, Technobladepassed away due to bone cancer in
2022 as and was memorializedfor a time in Minecraft's home screen
with his motto, Technobladenever dies.
(22:17):
So the pig with a crown, do.
You know how old he was?
It doesn't say.
It doesn't say.
Quite young.
Quite young.
I can't imagine.
He was massively old.
If you see the pig with acrown now, you know there's a bit
of a deeper meaning to it.
I've just seen another onewhich I feel like I do want to throw
in, which is there's movieposters for the Goonies, which we
talked about beforeBeetlejuice and National Lampoon's
(22:38):
Vacation in Garrett's shop.
All these films weredistributed by Warner Brothers.
Nice.
So there you go.
There's some facts of the day.
Thank you very much.
There's not masses of them, asyou say, because it's a newer film.
Okay, the final part of parttwo is what do we think?
And we are going to gostraight over to Darren Horn.
(22:59):
This is a huge pile of shit.
This is.
It did so well.
I hold that until now, listeners.
This is an absolute tragedy.
I think it lasted four secondsthere of a move.
This is.
I was so angry walking out ofthis and that they dared to put this
on screen.
And whoa.
And what I'm furious about isI don't think there's an ounce of
(23:22):
love in this movie.
I don't think the filmmakershave any love for it whatsoever.
They have no love for what it.
Are you saying this is just acash grab?
It's an absolute cash grab.
Without a doubt the critical drinker.
I listened to his review onthis and he made probably the best
point, which was for a filmabout creativity, this is the least
amount of crazy.
Like I saw other reviewssaying the creativity is below the
(23:45):
bedrock.
You know, it's like you can't dig.
We were so kind in that first, like talking about what is it's about.
Because it's hidden.
Yeah.
It's not obvious.
That's why I thought in thefirst bit we were like.
We were going to struggle.
Very kind.
Like, honestly, the importanceof creativity.
Everyone go watch.
There's a TED talk by Sir KenRobinson called Do Schools Kill Creativity?
(24:05):
Like, go watch that.
That would.
That will increase.
Have Lava chicken, though.
No, but it will increase yourIQ points and to make up for the
ones you've lost from watchingthis movie.
Like, it's like there's waysof doing stuff with love.
Like Barbie is done with love.
Like Margot Robbie clearlyloved the toy range and she wanted
to say something and itcommented on the zeitgeist.
(24:27):
It was fantastic.
I think Pokemon is done with love.
I think that, you know, IPtheir intellectual properties is
well crafted and everythinggoes back to the core message.
And every single thing thatcomes out feels like it's part of
that family.
This is a cash grab.
And the creative differenceswould have been Sean Levy being like,
I don't mean to cause Trouble.
But your script is a pile of shit.
(24:49):
Rubble have been the same.
Like, what the fuck are you doing?
And you're right.
Sean Levy, Deadpool and Wolverine.
Stranger things.
Real Steel is a great freakingmovie that does not get not a love.
I got that to watch at home.
Fighting robots and Hugh Jackman.
And weirdly, I was at thecinema when that showed and it was
dead.
It was a hot summer, I think, and I went in to watch it, you know,
actually, I think was the onlyone in the screen.
(25:10):
And I went downstairs toAndrew, who still works there, and
I was like, dude, get upstairsand watch this.
Like, no one's coming to seeit, but it's great.
And I'm sure he saw it and wasjust like, that's insane.
It's fighting robots.
What's not to like?
So go watch Real Steel.
Go watch Night of the Museumby Shawn Levy.
Shawn Levy's a good director.
Jared Hess, who they use, hasdone nothing.
(25:30):
And the writers of this appearto be mainly staff writers from the
Napoleon Dynamite TV series, which I did not know existed.
Wow.
I didn't know that either.
Like, what?
And not to.
Lipa's a pile of crap.
Like, what are these people doing?
And they also.
Also Jack Black.
Exactly.
It's like, stop.
And that's the other thing.
Jack Black and Jason Momo.
(25:51):
What have they got to do with Minecraft?
Like.
Like with Superman.
What's his name?
Oh, my God.
Henry Cavill.
Henry Cavill gets involved instuff that he loves and his love
seeps through.
He loves his warmer.
How do we know that those twodon't love that game?
I've never.
Henry Cavill doesn't shut upabout what he loves.
He's like Warhammer.
They're seeing him beinginterviewed and women being like,
(26:11):
you know, what are you into?
He's.
I'm into Warhammer.
And they give this littlesmirk and it's like, smirk who you
want.
You would love him to comehome with you and play Warhammer
in his little basement.
Whatever.
He's a geek.
He's going to get theWarhammer films or franchises.
He's working on that now, isn't he?
And he loves stupid Superman.
And he fought for Superman tohave the.
Have a hairy chest because heis in, like.
He loves the source materialand the Witcher.
(26:33):
That's why he left.
I think he got fed up withthem twisting the story.
Exactly.
I know Jason Momo is a massivemetal fan.
Like, Metallica's his favorite band.
Right?
I know.
That's what he.
Because he Always talks aboutit, but.
He has produced this as well.
I noticed at the start of thefilm there's a lot of that.
There's a lot of that these days.
He just wants money.
He wants back end money.
Basically he wants to get a percentage.
So he's going to get makemoney off this for the rest of his
(26:54):
life.
Yeah.
And I bet he's going to be more.
There'll be more.
Yeah.
I love Jack Black films, but even.
In this I'm like, so listen to this.
So Minecraft creator, apparently Notch Pearson, is that
his name?
After seeing the trailerexpressed approval having no apparent
involvement in the film.
He jokingly said, I probablywould have even agreed to Ue bowl
(27:16):
making it.
Now Mark, I'm sure you don'tknow who Yui Bol is.
Paul, do you know who he is?
No.
Yui bowl is one of the worstdirectors ever to exist.
Exist.
What a title.
If you go look at like sayIMDb Internet movie databases, worst
rated movies, like the worst100 rated movies.
Yuri bowl will be there in abundance.
Yuri bowl has made movies likeFar Cry and Alone.
(27:37):
Look, he does lots of gameadaptations so far.
Cry, Blood Rain three, theBloodrike and we did the earlier
Blood Rains.
But the fact he's doing BloodRain three the Blood Alone in the
dark, like.
So the creator of Minecraftjust sold out.
Why did you need to sell out your.
Isn't he a billionaire?
Yeah, he's so rich.
You just shat on your own legacy.
(27:57):
Yeah, but we're saying this.
It's got like a six.
Six out of ten on.
This is what crushes your soul.
Well, this is a 6 out of.
10 on IMDb and it's makingmassive bank.
And I keep seeing peoplegoing, oh so good.
This is good.
This goes back to what we saidat the beginning.
Kids are making their parentstake them to see it.
Yeah, kids like anythingMinecraft, even if it's shit.
(28:17):
Well to them it's just anextension of the game.
But also all the gamereferences in it.
It's got everything theyexpect to see.
We're looking, we're lookingat this as a piece of art.
I know.
We're comparing it to sell out.
Like we're comparing it toCitizen Kane.
That's my line.
I do wonder about that.
I do wonder.
Like Scorsese speaks out inTarantino sometimes.
Like, this is not cinema.
(28:38):
Is it the death of cinema?
Like is it change?
Or is it the death of.
But no, but Barbie was a greatfreaking movie.
Like you don't have to like it.
But it was.
And it was a great movie.
There's ways you can do this well.
There's ways you could do this well.
And they didn't.
And they chose not to.
Over to Paul.
I'll pause you there.
You might have more to say.
He will.
Over to Paul.
What did you think?
(28:59):
So I struggled with this film.
As you know.
I tend to take all films aspositively as possible.
Yeah.
And I agree with Darren.
So it's an absolute pile.
And I like some really shitty films.
And.
And the only thing.
Go on, you go.
Okay, okay.
The only thing I hold Darren back.
The only thing I kept thinkingis, is it just because I'm old and
(29:22):
kind of bitter now and you haven't.
Played the game and I haven't played.
The game and it's not for mebecause I do think back and I confess
this.
And this is where all thelisteners lose complete respect for
me anyway.
And my judgment.
In 1993, I know none of youwere born, probably, but in 1993,
I saw Jurassic park and I sawthe Super Mario Brothers movie with
Bob Hoskins.
(29:42):
Now I was like 10.
I guess I enjoyed them both equally.
So I'm watching the Minecraftmovie and my brain feels like it's
melting out of my ears.
I can feel Darren's even moreso because he sat next to me and
I'm thinking, is it becauseI'm not 10?
If I was 10, would I beenjoying this?
Like, I enjoyed the Bob Hoskins.
If you're a Minecraft enthusiast.
(30:04):
I freaking love Bluey.
Like, Bluey is an amazing.
Like, you can.
You can do TV for.
For youngsters.
That's good.
And you can do films for youngsters.
It's really good.
Yeah.
It's like the Goonies.
We mentioned the Goonies before.
You know, that film as a kid.
We watch it now.
It's got that nostalgia oreven Toy Story.
Toy story.
Toy Story 3 is a masterpiece.
Got actual stories in it.
I'm watching this.
(30:25):
And.
And also, just the thing abouta bad film, I will forgive.
I've made bad films, like, with low budget.
And you work with what you've got.
I'll forgive Sharknado.
You know, I'll go watchPiranha 3D.
Like, I' movies that, youknow, there's just plucky filmmakers
trying and they're.
They're playing.
I always feel those ones.
Or they're deliberate, tryingto make it as bad as possible.
Because if you made it reallybad, it's good.
(30:46):
Yeah.
It can be Almost.
It could be like tongue in cheek.
Yeah.
There's so many.
This has got like an infinite budget.
Basically, it's Minecraft.
Yeah.
Like you could have hired thebest writers, not just, you know,
staff writer writers from someTV show.
It's annoying.
I also went back and booted upMinecraft because I'm.
My daughter heard I was goingto go see it.
She said, I played Minecraft.
I said, you play Minecraftlike you fight the skeletons.
She's like, no, there's noskeletons in Minecraft.
(31:07):
I said, oh, you must play onlike creator mode or whatever.
I said, well, I'll download itbecause we can fight skeletons and
build houses and stuff.
And then.
So I downloaded it and it was weird.
I downloaded my old game and Iwas like, I have no memory of this
place.
What is this place?
But then I was.
It felt different and I said, why is it that's different here?
And there was.
Well, you played this afteryou'd seen the film.
(31:28):
Yeah, I played it this morning.
Okay.
And then there was this whole.
And I wanted to change what mycharacter looked like.
And it's all monetized waymore than I've ever seen before.
Yeah.
And then you hit Marketplaceand It's just like 33% discount.
Batman skin this skin this skin.
Get this skin overwhelming itself.
But the way it.
It was like a Black mirrorepisode and it looked like a 1990s
(31:50):
computer that's got a virus, you know, with all those pop ups,
like.
And I was just like, this ismaking me feel icky and this is overstimulation
for most kids.
Like, that's too many brightcolors flashing spend money.
And it's not, you know, obviously it's real money, but it's
like Minecraft coins.
Pay 4000 Minecraft coins soyou can get this fun shovel or whatever
that.
Makes me think of Ready Player One.
(32:10):
Have you seen Ready Player One?
That's a great film.
Yeah, I'll probably recommendit at some point when it gets to
me and.
But there is a bit wherethere's the spoiler alert, but there's
a sleazy guy in it.
Basically he was trying tomake everything into what Darren
just described.
So there's this free Oasisvirtual world and it's just what
you said, isn't it?
All of a sudden he's like, oh,we'll have different bandings.
(32:31):
We'll have silver, gold andbronze and we'll have everything
for sale.
And.
And the guy who runs this VRworld says, no, no, it's not about
that.
And it feels like that'sexactly what Minecraft's gone down
there.
The Oasis was again, it'sabout love and creativity and having
adventures and friendship andall the good things.
And now you're seeing allthese, buy this, buy that, buy that.
30% off.
Yeah, it's not done with love.
(32:52):
Like, sometimes I think youcan monetize it.
You can do it with kindnessand love and you don't have to shove
it down people's throats.
But this is.
I actually feel kind of ickyabout Minecraft now.
Well, this film, again,there's Element.
I like Jack Black.
Hell, I'll take Nacho Libraover this one any day.
Also creepiness.
Jason Momoa's relationshipwith that kid.
Yeah.
What was that?
Leave that boy alone.
(33:13):
It was like they put the kidin, though, to be like, oh, this
is for kids.
So we need a kid in there.
Let's throw.
I don't know, it feels like Isaid before, it's all been botched
together.
They felt two dimensional.
Those kids had no personality.
No.
But none of the charactersseem to have personality personality.
So I didn't feel anything.
And I think that's a lot ofthese modern films now.
And also I said earlier, itspends 10 to 15 minutes setting up
(33:34):
some backstory.
So you're telling you'reexploring the wrong part of the story
like that you shouldn't haveto talk for 10 minutes to set up.
If you try and nutshell it aswell, though, it's like, oh, there's
a crystal that goes in anothercrystal which opens a portal to a
world.
But that's not the only worldbecause there's a baddie world.
The baddie world want thecrystal to shut down the good.
Like, it also sounds like.
Like we know, we know they'regoing to go to Minecraft because
(33:56):
it's called Minecraft.
So start in the ordinary world.
Start with the mum in freaking hospital.
That's why we love Tron andstuff like that.
Yeah, let us care about these kids.
Let's see the mom's funeral.
Let this kid be heartbroken.
His big sister be like, no,it's okay.
Like, we're gonna go, we'regonna go.
And then you lead them intothe Minecraft world.
You don't start with it.
Well, I thought this would belike the Jumanji.
(34:17):
I was hoping it'd be close tothe Jumanji.
Welcome to the jungle with Jet Black.
Yeah.
Really enjoyed them filmsbecause I was very skeptical when
they came out because I lovethe original with Robin Williams
and I thought, no, they've got characters.
They made it all, they did allthe switching the personalities and
it was really fun and Ienjoyed watching it.
This I did not enjoy watching.
Mark, what do you think?
Before me and Darren rant into oblivion.
(34:38):
I didn't hate it as much asyou guys, but I thought, I thought
it was poor and I thoughtthey've missed a trick.
It could have been so much better.
Do you think this is thepoorest film we've looked at?
Yes.
Yeah, okay.
Yes, I do.
I didn't think it was going to be.
No.
I had some hope of like.
Yeah, I might not get it.
It might not have been for me,but I thought there might be enough
aspects in it and things in itthat like hooked me enough to take
(35:00):
me through it to enjoy it overall.
But I thought, I thought I'mnot going to be the target ones for
this but I think I'm going toappreciate it.
Yeah, that's exactly what I thought.
Yeah.
It was a bit higgledypiggledy, wasn't it?
It didn't really.
It wasn't coherent.
It didn't follow.
That's it.
Like, like in the, in theexperience of the game, you start
basic, you build this, youbuild, then this happens and then
you accumulate this and thenthis happens.
Whereas this was all.
(35:21):
They got to be good creativebuilders within about five minutes.
Yeah, this is my first one.
Oh, now I've got the hang of it.
What?
Yeah, it's like a stylishhouse with all these furnishings.
You're like what?
I love a montage.
But even the montage felt abit like.
And the songs were bad.
Yeah, but, yeah, like theimportance of creativity.
But then it's male loneliness.
The guy who's got a businessthat's going out of business.
(35:43):
It's a divorce nonsense with Jennifer.
What?
No, I thought, yeah, like thepart with that.
That not that non speakingcharacter who went into the real
world.
That could have been that.
I did enjoy that part whereyou just.
He didn't say anything but Ithought they could have used that
so much better.
But it felt like they somehowgot Jennifer Coolidge and were like,
oh, how can we throw her inthis movie?
(36:03):
It was like a token.
They couldn't think of abetter way to do it.
No, I think it suffered fromthem trying to stuff too many references
and making sure it had thisand this and this and without thinking
how.
Yeah, I don't think it was all necessary.
Let's make a Minecraft movieand make a Lot of money.
Like we said, a proper good hero's.
Journey or that's what it's missing.
Or a problem that needs to be solved.
But doing it in the right way, like love.
(36:24):
There's no real.
You weren't really behind anyof these characters.
It was just.
There was too much you overhere now you're over here.
Now this is happening.
And I like films with loads of cg.
Sometimes, yeah, and sometimesI come out thinking it's just a bit
too CGI heavy.
But this one just felt like mybrain was falling out by the end
of it because it was just.
You could tell they were on agreen screen half the time.
(36:44):
And I'm like.
And I walked out and I forgotit all immediately.
Weird.
So, like thinking back and so,okay, so the girl, I don't like that
voiceover.
Almost like post credit scene.
Oh, so in the future then, shenow runs a self defense class using.
With the confidence she gotfrom fighting Piglins, whatever the.
Does the retro socks, retroshock then become really successful
(37:04):
for no reason at all?
Yes, I think so.
Yeah.
He's like, oh, now and thenthey're doing a concert.
Is that what was happening?
That felt like the end ofSchool the Rock.
Let's put the End of Schoolthe Rock on there.
Yeah, it was like, why are youjust shoving on these endings?
Did you just do like a testscreening and just put what everyone
thought?
How are we going to end this?
(37:25):
I don't know.
We'll just do this voiceoverand just say they were successful
now, as long.
As the audience got the blah, blah, blah, everyone after.
Yeah, yeah, blah blah blah.
Yeah, everyone's fine untilthe sequel.
And at least if the Piglinshad invaded the real world, that's.
That would have been good.
Yeah.
And they would have to usesome creativity to get back.
Yes, yes, yes, I agree with that.
So, okay, so we're going intopart three.
(37:51):
Part three is the Listen lounge.
So we have question corner andthen we have next week's movie.
So actually today, what's thebest movie that came from a game
or the best game that camefrom a movie?
Have you guys got any?
I like Resident Evil.
That's a good one.
The only weakness with that isit ends with a CGI creation.
Whereas the Red Queen wasfreaking terrifying.
(38:13):
Like a, like this child hologram.
Like, I've done a very bad thing.
Jesus.
Now with like the advent of AIlike Chat GPT being like, I've done
a very bad thing.
What have you done?
Chat GPT.
What have you Done.
I've switched off the oxygen.
What?
Yeah, I've released Godzilla.
Godzilla.
I quite like the Doom movie.
I haven't seen the Doom or the Rock.
(38:33):
Yeah, it's trash.
I liked it as a standalone, asa movie, but not how it didn't.
It didn't tie into the game asmuch for me.
No.
Because I grew up with that game.
I have that game inside now.
I like the fact you went first.
Person at the very end.
Yeah.
Okay, so I've already made myconfession about the original Super
Mario.
You're not a gamer anyway, so I'm.
Not a gamer, but go away.
(38:53):
Yeah, there was some dumbstuff in that film, but I still enjoy
it as a guilty pleasure.
I also enjoy the Resident Evils.
I quite like a lot of them.
And the one that I alwaysconfess to as a guilty pleasure,
which is Dead or Alive doa, which is Holly Valland's Fighting
on a beach in a bikini.
In a bikini.
Yeah, I know.
I'm sorry.
Shoot me down.
(39:14):
So Kieran, still, he commentedand he said for the video game to
movie, I'd have to say eitherthe recent Mortal Kombat or Silent
Hill.
Okay, that's interesting.
I haven't checked the newMortal Kombat.
That's interesting.
Okay, back you up.
Matt Adamson has messaged.
He said, super Mario Brothersin bracket.
The new one.
Okay, yeah, the new one.
Chris Pratt in the new Chris Pratt.
(39:34):
Does the voice and everyone'slike, oh, Chris Pratt's voice and
everything.
But he.
Yeah, he does a good job.
Matt Adamson has messaged inagain and he said, stranglehold video
game sequel to the film Hard Boiled.
Weird.
There you go.
Hard Boats.
Isn't that.
I wouldn't say.
That's an Asian kind ofgangster movie, isn't it?
Hard Boy not seen.
That's what he says.
Ethan Kirby has messaged inand said Tron purely for the Daft
(39:55):
Punk soundtrack.
Or Tron Legacy, he means.
Then, yeah, yeah, that's adamn good soundtrack.
And I.
I wasn't sure the first time Iwatched that movie.
It's a good game, but.
Yeah.
Second.
Well, I've watched it manytimes since and yeah, quality soundtrack
and underrated, possibly.
Oh, the new RoboCop game looksamazing, apparently.
Yes, I've seen that.
Yeah, that looks good.
Okay, there we go.
So.
So this is going the other way.
(40:16):
This is games based on.
But the question was eitherwhat's the based on a video game
based on a movie or the moviebased on a game.
So I have two.
Okay.
Because my Friends.
As I've told you both before, other.
Friends, non podcast friends, non podcast friends.
I say friends.
My mate Gaz, probably, he usedto take the piss and still does,
in the fact that every videogame that I have is normally based
(40:38):
off a movie or a TV show,because I'm not a big gamer.
So I'm going to go in with theGhostbusters game.
That's cold.
I don't think I ever passedthe first level, but, my God, it
was fun running around withthe Bronze and Buffy the Vampire
Slayer, the game on the oldXbox I've never played.
I don't know why that's not onmy radar.
It's good for me.
It was Michael Jackson'sMoonwalker on the Mega Drive.
Oh, my God.
I played that.
(40:59):
That was a good game.
You could turn into a car.
Oh, drive as a car.
I feel like Aladdin on Mega Drive.
That was good.
Okay, should we stop now?
No, I'm just wondering if weshould look up Moonwalker at some
point.
Oh.
Oh, the Michael Jackson movie.
Yeah.
That could be one of thosenostalgic ones where you thought
it was great.
Back in the day, I used to.
Just watch the smooth criminalpart of it over and over again.
(41:19):
Had all those videos in it,and they were epic.
It might be that.
Anyway, it's awful.
We'll move on to next week's movie.
But before we do that, if youwant to help us, the best way you
can help us is to share the show.
Tell your friends, if youthink of someone who would like this
show, send them a link.
Also give us a rating orreview whichever app you're listening
in.
Spotify or Apple podcasts, anything like that helps us grow
(41:42):
the show and gets us to awider audience and allows us to do
this.
It's a lot of work, but if youdon't want us to go away, then please
do what you can to support us.
Okay, next week's movie.
As this is a random month thathas five Tuesdays, so we have five
episodes.
It's gonna be the listen choice.
It would have.
We've done this one.
We've swapped it round.
Okay.
Because we went to the cinema, obviously, the other day, so we've
(42:02):
recorded straight away and gotit out.
So it was the listening choicewe had.
Should I read them out orshould I just tell what.
What it is you're adding?
No, no, that's.
Let's read some of them outhere, because some of them really.
Some of the audience choices,I think, are really good.
And we've got A really nice, diverse fan base.
Yeah.

So Jess Beck commented whereshe requested.
(42:22):
Saw the original one.

hate them.

Currently, Dog Day Afternoonisn't available in any subscription.
Like, included in your subscription.
(43:25):
You'd have to pay, like, atenor or whatever it is to watch
it.
So if we can.
We'd prefer your choices to besomething that is available.
Ben Nicholl requested theCrow, the original one.
That would have been fun.
I haven't seen that in a long.
Time, particularly becausethere's a remake which I really did
not like.

Oh, I'll be interested whatyou thought of it, though, because
it's more of a metal.
