So grab some popcorn and let'sjump into this week's movie. Right,
it's time to break down. Butbad boys. Paul, this was your choice.
Yeah, it was.
Okay, so this is part one. Wecall it diagnostics and we will do
the movie stats. We will thenlook at the synopsis and we will

(01:03):
compare it to our own version. This will be yours, Paul. Yours against
the official. We give you themovie in a nutshell without spoilers,
and then we will take a brieflook at some ratings and reviews.
So let's start with the stats. So it is available to watch in the
US on Hulu Prime, Sling TV andMax in the UK it's just on Prime.
It was released in April 1995.
Rated R. Yeah, it's justbasically 18, isn't it?

(01:24):
Yeah, there's a lot ofviolence and restricted. Yeah, it's
1 hour 59. The genre is actioncomedy crime. Stars Will Smith, Martin
Lawrence and Tia Leone.Directed by Michael Bay. Written
by Michael Barry, JimMulholland, Doug Richardson. Music
by Mark Manzina Mancina. Thebudget was 19 million and it took
141 worldwide. Synopsis. Time.

(01:47):
And you can't pass, Paul. We've learned that do not pass.
You can't pass on the synopsis.
You'll never pass. Never happening.
Feeling you're judging thischoice. Choice. This is a classic
choice action movie from those.
Paul's gonna give us hisversion of the synopsis and then
we'll pit his against theofficial. So off you go, Paul.
I hate writing these, but I'mgonna give it a go. Miami narcotics
detectives Marcus Burnett andMike Lowrer take on the latest case,

(02:09):
which involves a robbery, adrugs robbery from the police evidence
locker, which leads them toprotecting a witness who witnessed
a murder. Expect comedy actionBay him. See what I did there? See
what I did there? Darren'ssighing at me already.
So am I.
It was okay thing to say.
Facial synopsis. There's Twohip, hip, hip detectives. No one

(02:32):
says hip anymore.
I don't think they're bothhere because the different character.
Anyway, carry on.
One's a.
This has come from themarketing department, so they're
talking about. They can't doit correctly. Anyway, two hip detectives
protect a murder witness whileinvestigating a case of stolen heroin
from the evidence storage roomof their police present.
Okay, that's more succinctthan what I said, but still, it doesn't.
It's not. Doesn't sound fun.

(02:54):
It sounds really basic andboring. But there you go. That's
kind of almost the nutshell ofwhat the film is.
That is the nutshell. Yeah.
Let's move on to the nutshell. What is this movie about? I'll go
with you, Paul, first.
Good idea, good idea.
I. I think it's. Well, this isWill Smith's first big film. It's
Mike Lawrence's first bigfilm. It's like you've got these

(03:15):
two comic actors and you threwthem together as police detectives
in this buddy comedy. I guess, you know, if you're in your Lethal
Weapons and your Beverly HillsCop sort of genre of film, it's in
that thing. Obviously, it'sproduced by Don Simpson, Jerry Bruckheimer,
who did the Beverly Hills Copor the first two Beverly Hills Cops

(03:37):
and stuff like Top Gun, thingslike that. So it's got that real
80s feel, even though it's inthe 90s. So it's got the 90s feel,
but it's that actionblockbuster feel to it. And it's
Michael Bay. This is MichaelBay's first film where he shows what.
Michael Bay is now very wellknown for his action films and still
a.
Little bit on the leash, whichI prefer.
Still a bit on the leash.Yeah, yeah. Backstory for me, Michael

(04:00):
Bay. So I knew about. AboutMichael Bay, weirdly, before I saw
Bad boys, because in 1993,we're going deep cut here. Now, this
isn't really nutshelling it,but I'm going to tell you the story
in case you want to know this.So Michael Bay used to direct lots
of music videos before he didmovies. And one of the sets of music

(04:21):
videos he did was for MeatLove's Battle of Hell 2. So Battle
of Hell 2 Back into Hell hadthree music videos attached to it.
One of them, you'll knowprobably, which is Anything for Love,
but I won't do that, which wasall a big Beauty and the Beast sort
of thing. And for a musicvideo, you'll probably still agree,
well, you won't probably stillagree because it's like a million
years ago and all the kids belike, oh, that video's sedated now,

(04:43):
man. Not that that's how thekids speak these days. This is looking
at me like that.
This is a roller coaster.
I know it is.
Monologue.
It is. And I'm still going. Istill got. But anyway, he did three
music videos for Meat Love forthe album. He did Anything for Love.
He did Rock and Roll DreamsCome through, which actually starred
a very young Angelina Joliebefore she was famous. And he did

(05:04):
one called Objects in the RearView Mirror May Appear Closer Than
They Are. I'm hoping somelisteners know for a song. It's Meatloaf.
He has brackets in there. I doAnything For Love brackets, but.
I won't do that.
But he filmed these videos andif you have seen them, they're all
very epically filmed. They'revery much. Well, the Objects in the
Rear View Mirror one's gotlots of image. You'd enjoy the imagery

(05:25):
and stuff in it, Darren, because it's lots of the stuff that
Michael Bay then puts in hislater films. Very American, very
kind of old school, traditional.
Yeah, American Flags.
Yeah, yeah. Fast cuts andeverything else. But that's where
I saw Michael Bay in the firsttime. My brother got this VHS back
in the Hell Picture show andit was Michael Bay talking about
making mini movies withMeatloaf. Anyway, fast forward. This

(05:47):
may get cut. Who knows? That'swhat we're like. Oh, I like the personal
touch Paul gave with thestory. Oh, I fell asleep. Paul, try
to nutshell it. But then, obviously this is Michael Bay's first
foray into films and it is himkind of off his leash a little bit,
but reeled in, like Darrensays. So you've got the action scenes,
which, you know, he kind ofbuilds on with. If you've seen things
like the Rock and armageddonand obviously 400 transformers films

(06:11):
and some of the stuff thathe's done. But the heart of this,
it's very much the MartinLawrence, Will Smith movie debut
show. Obviously, MartinLawrence went on to make lots of
other comedy films, but WillSmith then became Will Smith. Get
your wife's name out of now. Can't do it. I know, that was bad,
right?
No, it's fine. But, yeah, weneed to talk about that as well.

(06:34):
We do. So the career of WillSmiths up and, you know, this is
the first one of what's nowbecome a franchise. So at the time,
obviously wasn't a franchise. It was Just another film. But now
there's been four bad boymovies today.
Yeah.
In terms of the nutshellitself, the story is what you've
just said. It's a drugs bust. It's, you know, crooked cops, it's

(06:54):
murder, it's all that kind ofstuff. But it's very much about the
banter between the two ofthem. And the action scene. Yes.
About their relationship.
Their relationship. And that'swhat it is. And again, the comparisons,
I've been Beverly Hills Cop,Lethal Weapon, all these sort of
films are actually buddy copmovies, especially the 80s 90s, that
kind of thing.
It's like the seriousness tothe comedy. To the seriousness.

(07:14):
Yeah, yeah, it's good. Andthat's your nutshell, basically.
If you like these guys, youdefinitely going to enjoy it. If
you're intrigued, maybe you'llenjoy it. If you enjoy Michael Bay
movies, like, if you enjoyedthe Rock and stuff like this, you'll
probably want to see hisenjoyment. His first feature to see
him in action. That's mynutshell. Anyway, without giving
too much, should we.
Just move on down?
I could just add, becausequestion is what it's about, right?

(07:36):
Yeah, yeah.
So it's basically a 1980smovie that somehow got lost in the
90s.
That's cool.
And that the guy you weretalking about is just a 1980s cop.
Like cigars smoking, like youget this guy back in the morning
or you give me your badge andyour gun. That's the kind of energy
that we have. But I think it'sabout. It's like Team America. Like

(07:59):
America. Fuck. Yeah. This isabout now.
That would be a great shot for this.
This is about when cops gorogue. Right. It's vigilante copism.
So it's right wing in thatway. And I remember reading an article
a while back saying that youcouldn't really make Lethal Weapon
now because since GeorgeFloyd, we don't want our cops to
be vigilante and rogue and dowhatever they need to do to get the

(08:19):
job done. We want them to obeythe rules and protect and to serve.
So it's. It was in the 90swhen it was still kind of okay to
do that. So, yeah, for me,it's about heteronormative masculinity,
out of control with authority.
Wow.
There you go.
Excellent.
I learned already that's thenutshell right there. Yeah, I was

(08:43):
like, it's just two copsblowing stuff up. No, no.
Yeah, what he said louder.
What he said, but louder.
But it's also got like the.The 80s kind of like, arnie, I'll
be back, kind of, you know,he's dead tired. There was loads
of little things like that, like, tell me a joke now. Whatever.
Let's move on. Let's have alook at the ratings and reviews.

(09:03):
So, Rotten Tomatoes, what doyou think.
The critics gave it, Darren, the critics would hate what? Depends
on the critic. The Daily Mailwould have loved it. But any. Anything
with any credibility wouldprobably. Probably give it seven.
Well, in Rotten Tomatoes, thecritically was 43%.
Man. I've got a lot of respectfor those critics.

(09:24):
The users.
The users were 78.
Yeah. They're more.
Because they're not sayingit's bad. Well, they're not saying
you can't like it, they'resaying it's bad.
I think the critics are just, you know, they need to loosen up,
man.
It's just their opinion. IMDbwas 6.8 out of 10.

(09:45):
Yeah.
Metacritic, the critics reviewwas 41 out of 100 and the users were
7.6 out of 10.
I would have thought the userreview would have been higher.
Yeah.
See why. I mean, there's fourmovies, isn't there now?
Four now. Yeah.
Like, there's a fan base for it.
Yeah. Yeah.
And it can, you know, you canthink, you know, you can enjoy.
Unless this is people beinghonest coming. I know it's a bit.
But I like it.
Yeah. Or maybe, who knows?Backlash to Will Smith, if those

(10:07):
are modern.
Could be. There's been so manyreviews for this film, though. So
it's just this was.
I just feel like the critics,as soon as it's like a blockbuster
action film straight away outthe gate, they're already a bit like
those.
Bit down, isn't it?
That's. That's not CitizenKane. It's like. No, it's not meant
to be. It's meant to be bad boys.
You have to. You mentionedCitizen Kane a lot.

(10:28):
Well, I do. I've never seenit, but I always. I just notice that
that's what the critics tendto say. Like, it's not Citizen Kane.
I keep meaning to watch itjust to see what.
We're gonna have to review itnow. I know that's your next choice.
Me and my always say, like, why did the critics always refer
to Citizen K? We must watchthis film. But we've been saying
that for about 20 years and westill haven't got around to it.
So Citizen Kane is like theBeatles of the film industry.

(10:49):
Yeah.
Okay. It's kind of changed thefilm industry.
Okay.
But yeah, I feel like theyfeel like every film should be that
sort of thing.
That's the gold standard.
And when it's Martin Lawrenceand Will Smith going like, you know,
you're damn right it'slimited. No cup holder in the front
seat, like in the front, youknow, all that kind of banner.
Right.
Wonderful film.

(11:10):
And let's look at somereviews. So Todd McCarthy of Variety,
he praised the films for itsenergetic direction and the chemistry
between the leads, statingthat the movie clicks through its
action sequences withefficient, hard edged panache.
Yeah, mayhem.
Roger Ebert of Chicago SunTimes critiqued the film for its
reliance on style oversubstance, noting that it tries with

(11:32):
all the energy at its commandto redeem an exhausted story with
sheer technique.
Yeah, that's valid. That'swhat your ebay is. Yeah.
Right. Let's move on to parttwo, which is spoiler territory.
Okay, so in part two we havewhat did we miss? Where we mainly,
Darren will challenge the wayyou see this movie and we will reveal

(11:55):
some things you may havemissed, whether you've seen it for
the first time or 100 times. And in takeaways, we will give you,
this is the first time we willgive our actual opinions of the film.
And in test of Time, it can goone of two ways. So if it's an older
movie, we'll discuss whatwould happen if released today. And
if it's a modern movie, wewould discuss what would happen if
it was released, say 25 yearsago. So what did we miss? Paul, it's

(12:16):
your choice. So I'm going toask you first.
Oh, I don't do the what wemiss territory. What did we miss?
This subtle coding of. No, Idon't know, it's Michael Bay blowing
stuff up and Will Smith andMartin Lawrence Bantron. You know,
what do you want? Is verymuch. That's why I see it as. I know

(12:37):
you'll have various thingsabout themes potentially, Darren,
but it's. It's a big dumbaction movie and I like action movies
that have the comedy elementwith it, where they have the banter
and everything. I do loveLethal Weapon Shocker. I do love
Beverly Hills Cop jocker. Youknow, I am a walking stereotype of
them kind of films. But. Butit's very much in their veins. Like

(12:59):
you say, escaped the 80ssomehow. But I love that fact. I
love the fact you've got this90s film that's very much just like,
hey, it's like Beverly HillsCop vibes. Even the opening scene
where it comes in with thatdun dun dun dun dun, with the music
and then the. Is it theFerrari or the Porsche?
The music is lush.
Porsche flying away. And theygot the band. Yeah. Apparently in
my facts later, I'm going totell you that scene was added later

(13:21):
to give it more energy at thestart. But as soon as I watch, I
was going through loads offilms to try and pick the one I wanted.
And I landed on this while I.
Was watching the first fiveminutes of a few different films.
Like maybe this one. Maybe youchoose. Not normally, but I did on
this one. I did on this onebecause I couldn't decide between
about three films. And Iwatched that first bit where they're
in the. And I was like, yeah,I'm going to pick this one just to

(13:42):
annoy Darren. No, we need.
What we need might be an appout there, the listeners can tell
us where. When a film becomesavailable for free, included in a
streaming service, it should, like, let you know.
Yeah, yeah.
There's lots of films we wouldwant to pick what we can't because
it's not available anyway. Wedon't want. We don't be suggesting
things that people are gonnahave to buy.
Yeah.
On top of their subscription. So that's it. If people wondered

(14:03):
how we choose this, that'spart of it.
But I don't know if there'smuch levels to this. It's very much
cops, bad guys, crooked badguys, crooked cops gone rogue.
It's French. Wasn't he the bad guy?
Yeah, yeah.
It feels like a 90s thing. You've got to be European.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
80S would have been probablythe Russians.
Or, you know, something likeDiplomatic community. What's that?
Lethal Weapon 2?
Yes. South African. Is he?
Yeah, yeah. So I don't thinkthere's too many layers to it other

(14:27):
than the buddy bit of it isnice. And we've seen. Well, I say
we've seen because I've seenall four of them, which you see develop
over the four films. And yousee these two guys at different stages
of family life. You've got thetwo different characters. Obviously,
Marcus Burnett, played byMartin Lawrence, has his family around
him, whereas Will Smith's sortmore your bachelor guy. And his parents

(14:48):
had a trust fund or whatever. So he's obviously got the car and
the suit and the jacket andthere's a bit of stuff in them. And
one of the things I did thinkwhen I was watching it again is as
much as you can knock it forbeing sort of maybe a dumb action
blockbuster, they do switchbetween them beats of when they need
to be Dramatic. Both of themare on it. And when they do need
to be funny and comedy andbringing the jokes, they do that

(15:09):
too.
Like when they get pulled overthat first time.
Yeah, exactly. Okay, okay,Darren, what am I missing? What am
I missing?
What have we got for us, Darren?
So you've got the out ofcontrol cop, obviously. So this is
like on unrestrictedcopyright. And they're bad. They're
bad. They're so bad. They getto a homicide at one point and there's
a crime scene, whatever. They're not wearing gloves, they're

(15:31):
just picking up stuff. They'rejust doing whatever they want. Like
this is. These people haven'thad any training at.
All with evidence movie magic there.
I think my main. I loved thefact that they're both African American
and they're both cops. That'swonderful. And I love the fact it's
white drug dealers. That's areally nice flip because for, you
know, many years pickingthrough the 70s, it would be, you
know, if you're AfricanAmerican, you're a pimp, you're a

(15:51):
drug dealer, you know, allthat's kind of toxic. And you can
have characters that haveunred. The unredeeming traits and
usually you would have acharacter arc so that they kind of
get to deal with that. But onthe whole, this movie is, I think
it's a little bit racistbetween the races. Like there's a
lot of kind of, kind of notbullying, but kind of back and forth

(16:12):
between them. And I thinkthey're the. The Italian co cops.
Oh yeah. They're like theother detectives.
Yeah. And there's a little bitof like kind of race language in
there, so. But it's alsopretty frickin homophobic. Which,
you know, I'm not making ajudgment on that. But these characters
or the time 1995, we notshouldn't really be. But you know,
it's homophobic and it's alsosexist as hell. So there's bits where

(16:34):
you know, so they're eithercalling each other bitch all. And
it's like, hey, and you're a.And why are you calling me a? It's
like, why? Why is that a badthing? What are you talking about?
And the homophobic bit iswhere female character says, oh,
why is there so many picturesof this guy? I thought he was your
like your lover or something. And he's like, what? No, I'm not
gay. Like, no, you've seen thedents in the bed. That's the one.

(16:54):
The bang. And it's like, yeah, gay people can do that too. Gay people
can get notches on their bed. What do you think they do when they're
in the bed? Like, what isthat? And they just think. And this
is something I've always hadan issue with, with buddy cop movies
like this, because I'd love itif, like, have you seen the Expendables?
Yeah, Right. Which is, youknow, goody pleasure. But Jason Statham

(17:16):
and Sylvester Stallone in abromance, basically. And I love bromances,
I think they're fun. But inthe Expendables, they throw in Charisma
Carpenter, who's got like afive minute part just to be like,
Jason Statham's straight, It's okay.
That's right.
Like, there's no way theseguys are fucking. We're good. We're
good. And there's a little bitthat way. No, there's a little bit
of that with this. And then Ithink with the portrayal of the family

(17:37):
and. And this again, he saidbabies back. Yeah. And. But my Lawrence
is always saying somethinglike him, is it. I'm. It's been a
while. I haven't got my needsor. I mean, I didn't know. I haven't
had any quality time. Mywife's not giving me any quality
time. And she's like, well, maybe if you came to bed with me
at the same time, maybe you'dget some. Like, you're not prioritizing
your family, but the family'skind of two dimensional and dysfunctional

(17:58):
and she's not listening to himat all. Like, it's insane. Whereas
with Lethal Weapon, which Ihaven't seen for a while, so it may
not hold up. Danny Glover'sfamily is a functioning family and
there's, like, love there andthere's support and there's different
things going on and there's awarmth to that family, whereas there's
a coldness.
The mutas.
Yeah. And it's kind of playedfor laughs. I remember just feeling

(18:19):
a bit uncomfortable with it,and I'm not really sure why that
is, even though. But I thinkit's also partly that it's badly
made. Like, there's a lot ofscenes where it's exposition, so
they're just telling you stuffand jumping to conclusions out of
nowhere, like, oh, you knowwho we should see? We should go see
Donnie. Because this has justoccurred to me, which means. Just
occurred to you. Like, andthere's a scene where they go. And
I can remember I saw this, like, you know, when we were kids.

(18:40):
And I loved it. And I wasquoting it with my brothers. And
we'd be like, you want badges?I got stinking badges. Like. Like,
we were swearing away. Wewere, like, totally going with it.
But that whole scene to say,oh, now we're going to a new location
that's all lit, like it's inMexico or something, that she's gone
to get some shampoo. They'rejust talking, and the guy pulls a
gun. Because this racialprofiling. Are these two black guys

(19:01):
that just walked into my.Surely you have other black customers.
Look where you are in Miami.
What? Like, it's an unusual occurrence.
Right. But it's in. They just, like, have another art. And do these
guys even like each other? They are yelling at each other all
the way.
The bromance, Darren, that'sthe brounce.
And being like, I'm gonna killyou. I'm gonna do this. I'm gonna.

(19:22):
I love you, man. It's likewhat I was gonna say.
Yeah. It shows the love atsome point.
Yeah. And then, you know, thenobviously there's the representation
of sex workers, which is quitesweet. And. But then she takes the
escort, takes her friend on ajob. How is that gonna. What?
But she's not.
She's not. She's not one ofus. She's like, she'll be fine.
Yeah.
Like what?

(19:43):
It's like, there's so many.
That was a random bit when Iwas making my notes. I'm like, that's
a bit random, but, yeah, I'llgo with it.
There's so many kind ofconfusing bits where they're. They.
The inherent homophobia andkind of sexism I found uncomfortable.
The. The. The amount ofviolence and people they kill in
order to get there. There'sone point when the bad guy was like,
you're killing too manypeople. Watch this. We're making
a mess. Then opens fire into a cafe.

(20:07):
That's 80. Actions movie 101, Darren.
It is. I know, I know. I just.I know. I feel. I Honestly, I feel
47 years old. I feel it. Like,I love. I absolutely love this. At.
What was it? 95.
Yeah.
15. 16. I would have been 18.Freaking loved it. Loved Will Smith
at the time.
This was his big breakout, don't forget.

(20:27):
Yeah.
Before this, like, he was a TVshow star in Fresh Prince Villa.
Yeah.
Bella. And this was the thingthat was like, yeah. Oh, he's a movie
star.
Loved him.
State was a few years afterthis. And then many black and stuff.
Yeah. Loved Michael Bay, youknow, love with the Rock. I Think
is great, you know, Watch aton. Armageddon. Armageddon is one
long music video, but it's.It's. I remember loving it when it

(20:49):
came out, so. Yeah, I know.Kind of. What do we miss? I think
there's. I think the ideologyof this movie, which is, you know,
masculine violence is. Right.Women are sex objects, and there's
the homophobia and sexismisn't within it. Now, that's fine
to a certain extent. To putinto a movie, you're allowed to explore
negative themes and stuff, butI'm just at the age where I'm a bit

(21:10):
uncomfortable with it.
It's like how it's portrayed,though, isn't it?
Yeah, totally. And there's no.There's no character art redeeming
it. They don't kind of learnor anything or. There's not like
maturity or. Yeah, and that'sit. I mean, it's called Bad Boys.
It's like. Yeah, you boys are ridiculous.
Ridiculous boys.
This is. This is like anadolescent wet dream.
What do you mean? There's nolearning? He learns how to drive

(21:31):
fast when he needs to.
Oh, yeah, that does. Oh, my God.
That's how you drive.
That is how you drive.Literally, the character arc in this,
he learns how to drive fast. And that whole bit when he's got
a trust fund has nothing tothe story. That's not character.
That's literally.
It's showing the opposites ofthem. Like, he's come from money.
He's got me behind him. He'sgot nothing. He hasn't got a pot
to pit in.

(21:51):
Yeah. And Will has given themno money. Yeah. It's just a reason
to give him a Porsche.
It looked good.
It did. It's just one of thefinest cars, I think, in existence.
I think it's amazing.
Okay, let's round out thissection with Paul's facts of the
day.
Facts of the day. Okay, so thetwo leads were originally intended

(22:12):
for Eddie Murphy and Wesley Snipes.
Now that would have been interesting.
That would have. That wouldhave been interesting. That. Mainly
because that's an odd couple.
Yeah. I can't find imaginethem being as funny either.
No, no, it might have been a different.
The charisma would have beenas between the two of them.
Yeah.
But maybe we're wrong. What dowe know?
The opening scene, I alludedto this before, but the opening scene

(22:33):
where Mike and Marcus held upby two carjackers, that was shot
in Los Angeles weeks afterprincipal photography had been completed
because Columbia and MichaelBay wanted a Better, more comedic
introduction to the two leadcharacters than what was in the original
film.
Yeah, it did set them up for, like, pretty much. Look, this is
what these guys are about.
Yeah.
This is their relationship.
And they're formidable. Theycan deal with things.

(22:53):
Yeah.
Also that wheels are exactly.Mike. Mike Lau is at womanizing.
Oh, there's a woman. I'm atrained professional cop, but here's
a woman walking past me. Samein this.
The woman is, like, spilledhis chips on his lap. The next minute
he's like, shit, he's got agun to some guy's head.
That's okay. These are allgood. The scene in the convenience

(23:14):
store where the clerk puts thegun their heads and yells to telling
them, freeze, mother bitches. Is also improvised. And they came
up with, no, you freeze, bitch. Now back up, put the gun down
and get me a pack of TropicalFruit Bubblicious and some Skittles.
So that I figured that hadbeen improvised because that's very
much their humor. So on thecommentary of the film, Michael Bay

(23:36):
mentions that he had a fightwith Will Smith near the end of production.
It was one of the last shotsin the movie where Bay wanted Smith
to say, hey, man, I love youto Martin Lawrence. He felt it would
show Smith's character'ssofter side. But the actor decided
on the day they were going toshoot it that he didn't want to say
the line. And Bay remembersthat the argument lasted an hour
and a half, te Leone andLawrence joining in. At some point,

(23:59):
Bay finally relented, sayingSmith didn't have to say the line.
He then pointed to the settingsun and explained to Smith, that's
motherfucking nature and she'snot motherfucking waiting for us.
They shot the scene and Smithsaid the line. So that sounds like
Michael Bay directing. It is finest.
It also sounds again likehomophobia. Again, I'm not gonna
say I love you. Why? This isyour partner. You guys, you do love

(24:21):
each other.
And they do say in subsequentbad boy movies quite a lot as well.
You know, that buddy kind ofthing. Anyway, the film's production
was extremely grueling forMichael Bay due to script problems.
Bay would later call thescreenplay a piece of shit. He doesn't
like to hold back, does hemake. And budget limits often meant
Bay would only get a singleday to shoot action sequences that
would have taken four days ofwork on more valuablely funded projects.

(24:44):
Bay sacrificed part of hissalary, so a key sequence during
the film's climax wasn'teliminated. And that's What I've
seen on some of the behind thescenes of Michael Bay does shoot
very quickly, apparently.Like, you need to be ready to go,
because he comes on and he'slike, boom, let's shoot this thing.
So maybe that's where itstarted from. Maybe not having the
budget and stuff on Bad Boysis where he started shooting quickly.

(25:05):
There you go. There's somefacts of the day.
Cool. Right, let's move on totest of time. So this. This is what,
30 years old?
They're still making a mark.
Not this one.
I was gonna say, you know, this kind of one came out last year,
still going Bad Boys for life.
This movie is 30 years old.

(25:25):
Oh, no. See that.
That can be right maths. Canit? 30.
30 years old. Okay, so whatwould happen if it was released today?
What would happen if someonesaid, delete the franchise and start
again? Someone had the ideafor this first one.
I think it'd be the same. Thecritics would be the same.
Yeah, I think you're right.Maybe the tweak some bits so it's
less in your face with some ofthe stuff you were discussing earlier.

(25:48):
Maybe they'd turn some of thatdown. But in terms of if it's an
action comedy blockbuster,it's going to have very much similar
patterns. Probably like thelater segments, the later chapters
in the Bad Boys films.
Have you seen the later ones?Yeah. Does the representation get
better, do you think?
Yeah.
I mean, the second one, theygo to another country and start blowing
that one.

(26:08):
I was going to say this. I'msaying, yes, but I'm imagining you
watching them going, this is.This is.
Don't they drive a Humvee to,like, a shanty town where there's
a place to like and there'skids and children and their dad.
There's probably problematicstuff in all of them because they're
all this kind of crazy, but,you know, they'll drive through the
middle of the town in the cityand Bad Boys 3, blowing stuff up

(26:30):
with machine guns. And, youknow, how many people have they killed
in the city while they'rehaving that chase? I don't know.
So some. Some things don'tchange. But for me, this is where
I kind of suspend thedisbelief. There's realistic movies.
Yeah, okay. That's very much areality. And then there's the Michael
Bay reality, which isstretched and it's sort of very much.
This isn't realistic at all.

(26:51):
The technical term is diegesis.
Oh. They go.
The universe, the world thefilm exists in.
Yeah, it's movie world. It'saction movie world. It's not reality.
It's like when something blowsup in a Jerry Anderson Thunderbirds
thing and it blows up like 17 times.
But I think we haven't seenthe Rock for a while. But I don't
think it's very masculinemovie, body movie. Again, good chemistry

(27:14):
between Sean Connery andNicholas Cage. But I don't remember
the homophobia or the sexismin that movie. I mean, there's very
few female characters.
But I think if you watchagain, you'll find some bits because
I'm thinking of some now. But.But maybe that, that.
Oh, but those guys are morons.
Yeah.
It's not the leads. Yeah, those guys deserve to die.
There's bit. There's bits ofit in sort of the action films. Isn't

(27:37):
that in the genre? In thatgenre. But it's the suspending, the
disbelief of.
I wonder, I wonder if we. Whatwe're going to say that. Because
we seem to say there's a lotthat, yes, if it was remade or if
it was adapted, maybe it wouldwork. But what if we say, what if
it was discovered? This was alost movie, it was just governed,
it was just put out as it is.

(27:57):
I think it would do well. Ithink a lot of people overlook the
things that I, I brought up. Idon't think we all watch a different
movie. It's like we said, wedid an episode of Drop Dead Tread
before. We actually worked outthe kinks in this and there was so
much stuff that we would havemissed as a kid.
So much I missed in thatbecause, yeah, I sent it. Since it
came out.
We all see the movie we wantto see and, you know, particularly

(28:19):
if you're, you know, astraight man watching this, you're
going to love it, like, because you're not picking up and
all that other stuff.
Yeah, thanks. Yeah.
Right, let's move on totakeaways. So what did we get out
of this film? I'm going to goto Darren first.
Oh, okay. Yeah, I like, Iloved it when I was a teenager. I
was in pain watching this. Inearly gave up halfway through because

(28:40):
it's, it's. This should be a90 minute movie. This is like an
action movie. Should be 90minutes. We get in, we get out, and
it's lush and you could, youcould cut like 30 minutes from this
movie and you. It wouldn'timpact a bit bloated. Bloated is
a good word. And ridiculous.Like there's a bit where they go
to the nightclub he's off,he's off.
What have you done?
And they should be looking forlike the bad guy and Will Smith is

(29:00):
just flirting with a stripperand then.
But that's the comedy of itbecause Mike Lawrence is getting
beaten up.
Being beaten up in a gentswhich you can see through the aquarium.
Like all these people justtaking shits and pissing.
Now I made a note about thisbecause I did find it weird how you
had. It was the most mankygents toilets ever. But then they
had candles and likeornamental things. And I'm like,

(29:22):
what is this place?
Yeah. It's just that thatdidn't work for me. And there were
so many other little bits.Like even the bit where he walks
up and he's like I'm MikeLowry. Whatever.
Lowry.
Yeah. And she said you werenot how I expect it. Arrest her.
She is a witness to a crime.Take custardy. Like why'd you let
this go on so long? She. Shedoesn't get to dictate policy. Put

(29:46):
them in cuffs.
This is again where I'm gonnaplead. It's movie, it's not realistic.
She was also a bit bland.
TI Leone.
Yeah. She had no car or shehad nothing to work with other than
wearing like skimpy clothes.
And yeah, I don't mind her in.
It, but she gets turned on bythe guns and the danger. And then
it's like playing around withthe idea of having sex with Mighty
Night, his character. Yeah. And then he doesn't. He thinks that

(30:09):
Will Smith's his wife. So hecharges over there and he's like,
what you doing? I would neverdo that. Oh yeah. I'm gonna forget
everything I just heard on thephone and just go running away again.
There was. It was. This isridiculous. It's. It's Michael Bay.
Not his worst. His first kindof Transformers gets a bit sillier.
Yeah.
Michael Bay is a phenomenaldirector at times. He's put that.
He's put his leash on now. Andthere's a movie called 13 Hours which

(30:31):
is just superb. I think it'shis best work. Very mature. But this
was an adolescent boys kind offever dream of. That's what it felt
like. It felt like a 9 yearold. I was playing with the action
figures and they had like atoy Porsche and like a Lego town
and was just blowing stuff upand running around. The same third

(30:52):
rate dialogue and bad 80s kindof puns at the end. Because none
of those things make me laugh.
All of those things Darrensaid make.
The things you Love, Yeah.
Hey, subjective, right?
But I don't. It's been awhile. Like, it's been a while since
Lethal Weapons. It's been awhile since I've seen like 48 hours.
Beverly Hills Cop. I'vewatched probably more recently and

(31:13):
I still like that, but. Butthen that plays around with, you
know, stereotypes quite a bit,but it's usually doing a character.
Yeah, I enjoyed it. It waskind of. Some of the things you said,
Darren, I kind of agree with, but it was just. For me, there's
the nostalgia of it.
Yeah, yeah.
Put me down. I remember thisand it made me feel certain ways,
but it's just. For me, itdoesn't. It doesn't hold up. It's
a bit. It's a bit adolescent,a bit basic, a bit cliched.

(31:35):
I nearly thought at the endthey were going to let him live.
They're like, no, no, youknow, we're going to take him in.
And he said, no, it's not overyet. Oh, we shot him now. Now I can
go home and be happy.
That's what you want from an80s action movie, right?
An 80s action movie? Yes,Paul, that's what I want. Not from
a 90s action. Yeah, but.
Yeah, just not this one. Forme, it was. I'm glad I've watched

(31:57):
it again. I'm glad you choseit because it's gone. Take me back
down memory lane. But, yeah,it didn't really hold up for me.
It was lacking a bit insubstance and bloated.
Like I said, I can see whyit's good fun. And I have no. I'm
not judging anyone who likesit. I'm not judging.
I tried to not take it tooseriously because it doesn't take
itself seriously, but therewas a lot of in it. And I was like,
that doesn't really work. Partof it I liked, parts of it I didn't.
I've took in everything you'vesaid. I understand everything.

(32:20):
He's going, la, la, la, la,la, la, la. Sticking his fingers
in his ears.
No, no, I.
Same with 80s power dress, shoulder.
Oh, it's her from CSI, isn'tit? Mark Hagen. I can't pronounce
her name. E. I'm gonna bustyou down.
I'm like, how about you helpeach other to solve the crime?
But no, I understand whatyou've sort of said and it makes

(32:41):
sense, but at the end of theday, I've still got that nostalgia
factor with it. I put it onand I'm like, bad boys, man.
And in the Comment, kind of.If we can find anything that makes
us happy, cling to it withboth hands.
It's the escapism thing. Sowith movies, for me especially, it's
very much that escapismquality. So sometimes I like to watch
something that's realistic,and I'm like, oh, yes. That's how

(33:02):
they would do it in reality. And other times, you don't care.
I don't care.
Yeah, it's like, for me, like,Fast and Furious.
Yeah. Like, I just. Yeah, sometimes a lot of you just.
Want over the top. Ridiculous. What the.
But, like, you think of thepaperwork John McClane's gonna have
to do after the NakatomiPlaza. But no, it's Die Hard you're
watching. You're like, that'swhat it is. So I'm a bit like that
with Bad Boys. It takes meand, you know, it's one of the films

(33:24):
me and my brother used towatch when I like you say when you
were a certain age. Mybrother's older than me, so that
was one of them sort of boysfilms that we would watch together.
So it kind of takes me backinto the nostalgic place as well.
But I was playing a game theother day, could Sea of Thieves.
And I was like, sailing asloop. And there's other players.
It's like online game. Andthis other player ship came behind
me and started attacking me.And I was like, I don't want this.

(33:46):
But they played Bad Boys togive the mic, and they're like, bad,
Bad Boys. What you gonna do?And I was like, okay, that's actually.
Actually kind of.
It's really good.
They laughed you into submission.
Okay, that is quality. That is.
Yeah. So me. It's an escapist, fun film of, you know, of its time.

(34:06):
But, dude, thank you forchoosing it. The fact we just went
from he's got Fridays at Bad Boys.
It's a good mix, right?
Yeah, it's gonna beinteresting what we got next week.
Okay, let's move on to partthree of the podcast. In part three,
we have Worth the Watch, thelistener lounge, and next week's

(34:27):
movie. So in Worth a watch, whoever's movie choice it was will
give us a suggestion ofsomething that's caught the eye.
Be on tv. Could be a TVseries, a documentary, or a movie.
Then we head to the listenlounge where we'll answer some of
your questions, read some ofyour comments and emails, and after,
obviously, in next week'smovie, we will reveal what we shall
be breaking down next episode. So worth watching.

(34:49):
Paul Hello.
How much thought has gone intothis? How many times have you changed
your mind?
Quite a few. Made a fewchoices. But then I came up with
a clear winner, which goesinto all the stuff. We were just
talking about escapism andenjoying that. So this is something
I started watching duringlockdown, which obviously was quite
a difficult time for mostpeople in different ways. I was no
different to that.
Now, the beginning of fiveyears ago.

(35:10):
I know, right? That'sterrifying. Terrifying. But in the
middle of lockdown, my brothersaid, oh, you gotta watch the show.
I was like, okay, so if you'refamiliar with the Karate Kid films,
you'll probably know where I'mgonna go with this. And it's available
on Netflix. It's called Cobra Kai.
I have not seen it.
Okay, I will talk about it asif you know nothing about it.
Have you seen it?
You might.
Yeah, I watched the first twoseasons and then I realized I was

(35:33):
47.
If you want something, it was.If you want something fun to watch,
kids, I'm telling you, CobraKai is the way to go. Is it cheesy?
Absolutely. Is it joyful?Absolutely. It basically picks up
the Karate Kid saga. So you'vegot Ralph Macchio and his nemesis,
if that's what you want tocall him, William Zabka, from the

(35:55):
first Karate Kid film. And itpicks up all these years later, and
you kind of see the firstseason especially and, you know,
kind of through the rest ofthe seasons, too. You see it through
William Zabka's eyes as JohnnyLawrence's character. I think there's
six seasons, and the last. Thelast episodes have just dropped.
So it's now a complete thing. It's.

(36:15):
It's finished now.
Is it finished in its entirety?
Yeah.
They're going to do maybe morespin offs and who knows what. And
Ralph Macchio is going to turnup in a film with Jackie Chan later
this year called Karate KidLegacy or something like that. Legacies
Legacy, I don't know. Correctme in the chat, but Cobra Kai, if
you want, kind of just a funescapism thing, it brings in the
kids, if that's what you wantto call them, like the next generation

(36:35):
of Karate Kids. And there'sback and forth. Are they gonna be
friends? Are they not gonna befriends? Are they enemies now? Are
they not? And then the bigbaddies come back from the.
Every movie, right?
Films. Yeah. And in some ways,Karate Kid 3 is seen as not good,
but this almost makes it.
But that was the one when heruns out into the rain and Fights
electricity, isn't it?
No, it's Kraken 2 where hefights the rain. Okay, yeah, yeah.

(36:58):
Karate Kid 3 is where TerrySilver shows up.
Okay.
And tries to lure him to CobraKai, clearly. Oh yeah, I'm big into
this, but it kind of makes allof all of them legit in this franchise.
It's a great.
I'm making it almost sound notfun, but it is fun. It's almost like
Power Rangers at times. It'sthat daft. But it's still really
fun and the characterdevelopment's great. But yeah, it's

(37:18):
a fun show. And like I say,it's now all available on Netflix.
So I'd recommend Cobra Kai ifyou want something that's light hearted,
daft. And especially if you'veseen and loved the original Karate
Kid movies, I think you'll geta kick out.
Pun intended.
I didn't even mean that. Butyeah, a kick out of this. Not an
illegal one like the cranekick, which is debated muchly in
the Cobra Kai series. That'smy one to watch.

(37:42):
That takes us on to nextweek's movie. But before we go to
discuss what could possibly benext week's movie, I want to say
if you want to help us, thebest way you can help us is by giving
us a rating, a review in anyapp that you're listening to, or
just share the show. We needyou guys to help us grow this show.
So just the best thing you cando. If you can think of just one
person who would like thispodcast or this particular episode,

(38:04):
send them our way. We will beforever grateful. Okay, it's time
to do March's Listener Choice. So we had a record amount of requests.
This time we put them into aspinny wheel. I don't know what else
to call it. It's a spinnywheel. We couldn't decide.
So yeah.
So we let it just happen byaccident. See if you can hear this
in my microphone.

(38:24):
Oh, you got the theme tune. Yeah.
It's spinning. It's spinning. It's spinning. We are on, Tom.
Oh, we have got Con air. ConAir 1997.
That's another movie I haven'tseen since the 90s, probably.
Yeah, I've not seen that for along, long time.
I've seen it. It's been awhile. Same.
Yeah, it's a classic.

(38:46):
It's a good cast.
Yes, definitely.
Who sent us in Con Air then?
Ryan Hogarth, a good friend ofmine from a long, long time ago.
He sent us in a big. I'll readit out later. Okay, so some of the
entries that we had were alsothe Substance by Ben Nicholl. Haven't
seen that.
No, but it's Demi Moore, I think.

(39:06):
Oh, it's new.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. 2024. Yep.Jess Beck recommended Conclave.
Also new.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Who's in that?
Oh, I want to say Ralph Fiennes.
Rebecca Schultz, the wife Iwas gonna recommend.
Sounds familiar.
Recommended unleashed 2005.
Oh, nice.
Have you heard of that one? Doyou know it?
I had a look on IMDb because, you know why?
Do you know why she'srecommended that? Because she was

(39:28):
in it.
Really? Oh, no way.
For like half a second.
Jet Li.
Yeah.
Okay, cool.
Yeah. Glasgow. Yeah, yeah. That's her claim to fame.
That is a good claim.
What else we have AndyMinette, The Secret Window 2004.
Laughing at that one.
The Secret Window.
Ollie cake, Nickel Boys, 2024.Oh, someone. So you can tell who

(39:50):
his regular listeners inPrime. It's on Prime. Available to
watch. Yeah. Holly Pilkington,Lars and the Real Girl, 2007. You're
not in front of yourmicrophone, Darren.
I guess it's. It's Guy fromBlade Runner and stuff. Ryan Gosling.
Oh, Ryan Gosling, right. Okay.Yeah, I think Danny Roberts, American

(40:11):
Psycho 2000.
Yeah, I still haven't seenthat yet. I've seen lots of clips
of it, but I've not actuallyseen it.
Genesee d requested the wit.The Watcher or Just Watcher, 2022.
Okay. No, Jen Lawson, theBirds, 1963.
That would be cool.
But a Hitchcock bit ofclassic, though.
Joe Dawson, Star Wars A New Hope.

(40:33):
Yeah, I just. I know that wehave to begin.
The Star wars journey.
That's one of the reasons Iteach films, is I know that movie
very, very well. I'm sure Iwouldn't even need to rewatch it.
I feel like if me and Darrengot going, we could probably reenact
it right now.
I also feel that it's beenoveranalyzed already.

(40:53):
There'll be our. Our skillset, our challenge to see if we can
make people maybe spot thingsthat they didn't know or see in a
different way. Facts that youcould find, Paul, that were not already
out there. Very, very. Notvery well known.
I feel like most of the factspeople know, but I do know some very
really geeky Star wars trivia,so maybe there is facts there. And

(41:18):
I'd probably end up doing AlecGuinness impressions and things.
There we go. So next week'schoice is chosen by you guys. It
was chosen by Ryan Hogarth,he's chose Con Air next week. All
right. I am looking forward towatching that again. I'm really looking
forward to watching thatagain. Okay, there we go. So if you
want to get in touch with ushere, you can email us. Hello, Movies

(41:38):
in a nutshell dot com. Ourlinks to the show, our socials are
in the show notes. You can getin touch with us, send us a message,
send us some abuse. If you. Ifyou want to do that as well, you
can.
No, you don't.
I'm amazed we've gone this farwithout getting anyone.
I know, like we're incitingyour opinion of Wicked is.
I feel like there's enough ofthat aggression in the world.
Yeah, Paul really doesn't likeconflict, so can you just direct

(42:00):
it?
Paul's too nice. He's too thinskinned. He can't take it. He'll
cry.
You know, it's like, that'syour opinion and we've got ours.
Plus.
Fine, let's all live together.
How does he know there hasn'talready been in. We just haven't.
We haven't shown it to him.
We've shielded you from it.
Oh, thank you.
No, there hasn't been any. It's all been good so far because
everyone seems to like whatwe're doing, so that's good. Thanks.

(42:20):
Okay, this episode isofficially over. This is Mark saying
goodbye and Darren.
Saying bye for now.
And from now on, that's howyou drive. That's how you drive.
