Psalms to Help You Sleep

Psalms to Help You Sleep

Welcome to the Psalms to Help You Sleep podcast with Sarah Frazer and Jennifer Holmes. If you struggle to fall asleep at night or go through your day fighting anxiety and depression pull up a chair. Psalms is a book that gives us permission to feel but also to hear. In the Psalms we find recognition and clarity because each of the psalmists gives an honest voice to our deepest struggles. They also give us a chance to hear another voice: that of our caring and ever-present Father. This is the voice we need to hear in the middle of the night when despair keeps us awake. The voice of God can sing us back to sleep. Join us as we read through a psalm, share a short devotional, and end in prayer. Take a breath. Let's begin.

If you need to remember God's faithfulness tonight, this Psalm tells the story. Psalm 78 walks through the history of God's people—their struggles, their forgetfulness, and God's steady grace. Again and again, He remained faithful. As you listen, may you be reminded that even when we wander, God's love remains.

Blessings might not look like what we expect. We do not worship or serve God to receive things. God's blessings are often quiet, heart-changing things. Let God's face shine on you in the quiet. Let His peace settle your thoughts. And sleep, knowing His purposes will continue—even as you close your eyes.

Seeking God in the wilderness - David does not seek water, or relief, or a way out of the wilderness, but he seeks God. As we meditate on this psalm tonight we could talk about many things. This psalm is rich in theological truth - so powerful and comforting! The well of this psalm runs deep, with truths so profound I want to touch on each one, but end tonight's devotion with what I think is the most comforting thought...

Live for today. Embrace the present. There is a pull in our society right now, evident in books, online videos, podcasts, and other media sites to focus on the "here and now." Sometimes I think we get so caught up in the present that we forget the past and future matters too. Listen to Psalm 61 and how David reminds us to look back and look ahead to help with anxiety and depression.
