Faith. Hope. Waiting. Patience. Pain. Resilience. When experiencing a lengthy trial, this can describe the cycle we all walk through. In 1 Samuel chapter one, we learn about Hannah's trial: Struggling with infertility for years.
The Bible refers to this difficult time (intensity meets long duration) as "Bitterness of Soul" (1 Samuel 1:10). It's the time that God is working in our lives to bring about a greater result. While we cannot predict what the outcome will be, we aspire to walk through this "Bitterness of Soul" with our eyes on God.
This is how the story of Hannah, the mother of the prophet Samuel begins, but what makes her story admirable is her response to the pain and the prophetic joy that can occur when you open your soul to God.
