At the Thai Entertainment Complex Summit in Bangkok, Ken Jolly, Vice President and Managing Director for Asia at Light & Wonder, shared insights into the prospective gaming landscape, including anticipated game offerings and potential timelines for casino openings.
Jolly anticipates that Thailand’s casinos will mirror Singapore’s integrated resorts, emphasizing slot machines significantly. He noted that while Macau’s gaming revenue is predominantly derived from table games—slots contributing merely 5% to 6%—Thailand is expected to adopt a different model. “Slot machines will be a much stronger market here,” Jolly remarked, suggesting that this approach would cater to both local patrons and international visitors.
This strategy aligns with regional gaming trends, where slot machines have gained popularity among diverse demographics. Thailand aims to attract a broader audience, including younger players seeking varied gaming experiences by focusing on slots.
The Thai government views the legalization of casinos as a strategic move to bolster tourism, a sector that has faced challenges in the wake of the pandemic. With annual tourist arrivals exceeding 40 million, officials believe integrated resorts can serve as additional attractions, enhancing the country’s appeal.
However, the legislative framework is still under development. The government has proposed establishing two integrated resorts in Bangkok and three in regional areas, including Pattaya. Key considerations such as investment requirements, entry fees for locals, and exact site locations remain subject to parliamentary deliberations, expected between December 2024 and April 2025.
Regarding the timeline for operational casinos, Jolly indicated that an opening by 2027 would be optimistic. He mentioned the possibility of temporary or trial casinos, a strategy employed in other markets to expedite openings.
“The government might fast-track things by allowing temporary casinos to operate while the larger resorts are being constructed, but fully developed integrated resorts may not be operational until 2029 or later, depending on the legislative process and construction timelines.” Ken Jolly
