Intro Music

>> Sarah (00:12):
Nerds. I'm. This is Scene N Nerd. I'm your host, Sarah
Belmont. And with me, as always, is our Mr. Producer, will Will Polk
How are you doing tonight. Will.

>> Will (00:19):
Doing very well, Sarah. How are you doing this evening?

>> Sarah (00:22):
I'm doing good.

>> Will (00:24):
That's good. That's good. Good. Yeah, I know we're
talking some The Studio tonight,
and, I do have some news items this week.

>> Sarah (00:32):
Yeah. So, okay, what is
this? A Land of the Lost TV series
reboot?

>> Will (00:39):
Yeah, so the Land of the Lost, it was
a. A show that was
aired back in the. In the 1970s.
and it was, It was. It was the.
It was Sid and Marty Croft, and the show
was a. It was basically
like a time travel show. So we had this

(00:59):
family who, who were on
an expedition and they go down
this waterfall and they end up back
in the lands of like, the dinosaurs. Prehistoric times.

>> Sarah (01:11):
Okay.

>> Will (01:12):
Yeah. And so it was, Yeah,
so. So it only aired for like three seasons in the.
In the mid. Mid, mid to late 70s.
But for all the Gen Xers who are listening to
us, we all grew up on this show
because it was rerun and
syndication in the 80s M. And

(01:32):
so, you know, so hit it, you know, became a big cult following. There
was like the sea stacks and you know, I,
think the. The third season, I
want to say, the dad,
like this disappeared and then
the, uncle came looking for the. Looking for the
missing family members. So, yeah, so that was sort of

(01:52):
the premise of the show. And then I want to say in
like, maybe the mid. Early two. Maybe the early
2000s or late 90s, I guess it was early
2000s, Will Ferrell actually made a.
They did a movie of this. But
of course it was, you know, it pretty much
like eviscerated rotten
tomatoes, even IMDb. I mean, it's like, you know,

(02:15):
26, like tomato and
very low rated. And so this. This reboot that
Netflix is doing is going to be a reboot of the
original TV show and not that, crappy world feral
movie that was done, in the, you know, a few
years ago.

>> Sarah (02:31):
Interesting.

>> Will (02:32):
Yeah.

>> Sarah (02:34):
And then was, it today
that, DC Studios announced the lead for the
Clay Face movie.

>> Will (02:41):
Yes, we got the lead for the Clay Face
movie. His name is Tom,
Reese Harries. He's a Welsh actor.
And, currently he's in the, Apple, tv,
show Suspicion. and I think that's with the Uma Thurman,
if I recall. but yeah, so he beat out,
Jack o' Quinn who most recently has been in

(03:04):
Centers and also 28 years later
Tom Blythe who was in the Hunger Games and
George McKay who was in 1917. So
yeah, Clayface is one of the OG
Batman villains. he was
first appeared in the detective
comics in 1940 and

(03:26):
he was a, I guess an actor before that the
character was an actor before turning to a life
of crime. And of course you know the clay face,
of course he was you know, Shapeshifter and stuff. So
yeah. So this is the, you know this, this film I think
originally was going to be the. Directed by James
Mangle but I think he stepped away
to. And now James Watkins I believe is

(03:49):
stepping in to direct it and I think Mike Flanigan is
writing it and it's scheduled currently is scheduled for
Release and on
9-11-2026. So
that's the, the latest on on Clayface and I think
Matt Reeves is also maybe executive producing
it.

>> Sarah (04:07):
Okay.

>> Will (04:08):
Yeah.

>> Sarah (04:08):
So I'm not gonna lie.

>> Will (04:10):
Yeah.

>> Sarah (04:10):
I, I listened very carefully.
But when you,
when you said Jack o'
Quinn, I Was like
yeah, it's Jack o' Connell.

>> Will (04:24):
Connor. Yes. I'm thinking about, I'm thinking about.

>> Sarah (04:27):
It's not even Connor, it's o' Connell. And
the only reason why I knew that
was because he, he, he like started
off on the show Skins and for long time
listeners I, it is crazy to me how
every so often I bring up that show which is a
British show. The English version is

(04:47):
trash. Okay. The only, the only
good thing like you have to watch the British
show and I will be bringing it up again
next month because Will's going to make me go see
Superman and Nicholas Holt, who's our new
Lucas there, he started off
Well he didn't technically about a boy but

(05:07):
later in his teenage years he was
the lead of, of Skins.

>> Will (05:12):
So yeah, thanks for correcting me. Yeah. My
handwriting like failed me there.

>> Sarah (05:18):
It was just funny.
As soon as you said like Sinners I was like
I'm pretty sure Jack o' Connell is like
the only white guy.

>> Will (05:29):
Yeah, he was, yeah. A couple other folks. Ye. He
was the only one guy. He was very, he was very good in
Sinners by the way.

>> Sarah (05:35):
Yeah, yeah, he, he's, he's a really,
really good actor and I was.

>> Will (05:40):
Hoping he would get it because I remember, I think I was, I was
seeing the Some of the speculation as far as like these
actors who are up for the role, the lead in Clay
Face. And he. And his name was mentioned quite a bit, and
I was really hoping he'd get it because, I mean. I mean.

>> Sarah (05:54):
Yeah, yeah, yeah. But,
you know, we. We shall see
how this, actor does, whenever
that movie gets made.

>> Will (06:05):
Yeah, well, it's going in production. I mean, obviously, if
they. They've gotten everything locked in now. So,
we'll be go. It is going to production in the UK
later this year. Of course, Supergirl is coming out next
year as well. but so, this. Yeah,
so it is happening. It's not. This is not one of those
things like the Batman 2, which, you know, who knows when the hell is coming?

(06:25):
But this one is actually coming.

>> Sarah (06:29):
Yeah, but we all know this is not.

>> Will (06:32):
This is not. This is not. This is not Black Adam.

>> Sarah (06:36):
No, I don't. I don't think it's that Black Adam. I wasn't
even gonna go there. That wasn't there
a, little Batgirl movie. Oh,
yeah, like no one has ever seen.
Sorry.

>> Will (06:51):
Yeah, the dc. Yeah, well, I guess. Yeah, yeah, the
DC EU is definitely dead.

>> Sarah (06:56):
yeah. All right, and the last
news item is Star Trek,
related. So take it away.

>> Will (07:03):
Yeah, yeah, I did. Did, do a quick little note about
this. but, Star Trek Strange New Worlds has
been renewed for a fifth and final season.
it, will be, The third season actually had its
world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival
this past weekend. And really,
from what I tell everybody really enjoyed it from the reactions

(07:25):
I've seen so far from. From it. And,
But, yeah, the series,
itself, third season itself will premiere for
everyone on July 17th. the four
seasons is being filmed right now. And also this
fifth and final season of, will go
immediately, go into production, once
they've finally finished the,

(07:46):
filming of the fourth season. So we won't have, like, a
crazy long break like we've had between seasons two and
three of Strange New Worlds because it's been like
two years. and that part of that was due to the. To the writer
strike and then actor strike. But, yeah,
I mean, it's. It seems that this is the route that.
That the, the series. The show is going these days.

(08:07):
But, Yeah, and the fifth season,
will only have six episodes instead of ten.
So. Yeah, that's the. That's the late. I just wanted to
drop a little Star Trek, I know, in here on our main
show this week since there was,
some things and I Know the the showrunners, when they announced
it, I think it was on Friday that this was, that Paramount

(08:28):
plus was made this announcement. they just basically
said from the beginning, Strange New World set out to honor what
Star Trek has always stood for. Boundless curiosity, hope and
the belief that a better future is possible. We're deeply
grateful to Paramount plus for the chance to complete our five season
mission just as we envisioned it, alongside our
extraordinary cast and crew. And to the passionate fans who

(08:48):
boldly joined us on this journey. Thank you. With three
more spectacular seasons ahead for you to see and
enjoy, the adventure is far from over. So
you know, just my own speculation here is and also
something I did mention at the Tribeca Film Festival this
weekend. As far as the executive, production team,
anybody who's watched Strange New World, spoiler alert,

(09:11):
series crew members show
up in the show.
and including you know of course Paul Wesley as a
cap, as a lieutenant
James Kirk, Scotty showed up in
the last season and he's actually Martin Quinn who
plays Scotty's actually been elevated to a regular
this this upcoming season. And of course Cecilia,

(09:34):
Gooding's been playing Uhura. Of course Spock is there played by
Ethan Peck. So I figure, I think by the end of the fifth
season, everybody from the original series will probably
be, as far as that crew will probably be in
the show. And one of the things they did mention at the
film festival this past weekend, I don't know if it was joking or
serious, but they're like, you know, we might do

(09:54):
some further adventures with the original series
team. so with, you know, obviously with the, with the new
cast. So we'll see what happens there.

>> Sarah (10:06):
Awesome. Well, that's very exciting news
and for all of you, Trekkies
out there, all
right, and that brings us to the main
topic of tonight. the studio.
Season one, Episode five, the War.
Frustrated by her position in the office
office hierarchy, Quinn wages war against

(10:29):
Sal. I really like this episode
and I, I thought to myself, why
do I really like this episode?
And I was like, oh, okay, Matt
is around but he's not the focus.
But it's not like I don't like Matt,

(10:50):
it's more that, and we were talking about this
last week that his humor,
Seth Rogen in particular, his humor doesn't always
work for me. and this
episode I finally got my first laugh.
and it was when the burrito was thrown.
Just because, just because, like when the

(11:11):
Burrito gets thrown. It's just
a great timing of hitting the
guy right in the driver right in the face, and
then driving straight through
a film set. And it's just like, for
whatever reason, I thought that timing played out
perfectly.

>> Will (11:29):
Yeah.

>> Sarah (11:29):
and. And it finally made me laugh.
but overall I, I can. I
appreciated how, like, in a very
office, like, way,
we get these, we get more insight
into both Sal and Quinn
and and just they, they. They're

(11:51):
able to go back and forth. There wasn't
also. There also wasn't. I don't think
Maya appeared at all. I don't think Catherine
Han appeared at all. I think it was just like them three and
a few other office workers. And
then Matt was around and of course the
directors, because you had Sal
trying to rip off, Trying to get the

(12:13):
director of Smile to make the ripoff of Smile
while you had Quinn try to get her
first green lit with bringing on, what,
Owen. Yeah, yeah.
To direct a. Who
to direct his, like, first thing.
But yeah, so. And you enjoyed this episode

(12:34):
too.

>> Will (12:35):
I did, I did. Because you, you mentioned the office,
and I think that was. That was part of it. It was
that, that, that. That workplace. It was very
relatable because it was. It reminded me of. Of.
Of workplaces I've been in. You know, where you,
where you where cells, like the,
you know, you got Quinn, who's the young upand comer, who's

(12:56):
just trying to get
into the. The mix and, and try to, you know,
get, get her. Get this. You know, get this Owen.
Owen Klein a job. And, and.
And. And of course, S's like the old, the old guard.
He's like, yeah, I know how this, how the system
works. And, and yeah, we're.

(13:16):
We're ripping off. We're ripping off
Smile, but you know, but we'll just, you know,
we'll just call it Wink. And whenever he had that like, creepy
ass wink whenever he was, I, I couldn't. I
wasn't able to get an asset for it. But it's just like super,
super cringe when I was, When I was watching the episode. But
man. Yeah, I, I agree. I mean, it just.

(13:38):
All the beats really worked. And you're right, it was. Yeah, I think,
it was good after. I mean, yeah, there was no Maya,
there was no Patty this episode. but there were
just super relatable moments. Like, you know, like,
I'll think and some of the
cutthroatness of what people
will do to advance.
and we all hear the horror stories and we could all share

(14:00):
horror stories about things we've seen in the
office or in our workplaces where
people will do things like you know, Quinn
seeing that, you know, she knew that the Matt's assistant had
kept her password and stuff on the little,
on the sticky note on their computer and
like cancel the appointment and so that they would like

(14:21):
double, you know, in a double, you know, Matt was
been trying to like get lunch or whatever with Chris Hemsworth.
And so that was just a super funny moment because it's like,
okay, I know people like that and,
and so.

>> Sarah (14:34):
Who leave their password on their computer.

>> Will (14:37):
Yes, I do know people who are like that. I've seen it not, not
my current job, but I've seen it in the.

>> Sarah (14:41):
Past where it's like, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,
yeah. I, you know, the more
I think about this episode, the more I think about
how yes, Matt wasn't present. But it's
interesting because the, the debate
between Sal and Quinn, yes on the
surface level it's about hierarchy and
the up and comer and the old dog.

(15:05):
But it's also two
sides of where we've seen Matt
in his new position, come head to head
considering Quinn wants to
like has a line about wanting to make
good films and criticizes
Sal's rip off

(15:25):
and then he has to give her a lecture and
remind her the fact that there are 11 Fast and Furious
movies that prove your theory wrong.
Which is very good. So he is definitely on
the like we're here to make money. And so
a lot of their arguments
resembled the same back and forth that

(15:47):
we saw in the first episode between Matt and
Bryan Cranston's character. So
it's I, I like how we're
able to even see how
so far Matt hasn't like surrounded himself
necessarily around Ah
yes, men.

>> Will (16:06):
Yeah.

>> Sarah (16:07):
he did like in the first episode
promote Korri Quinn and there's a reason and
she's able to be that on his
shoulder talking about like making good
movies while Sal is also there
to be like no, no, no, dude, you gotta also make
the money. So, so I,
I, I think that that's another reason

(16:29):
why this episode works for a lot of people.

>> Will (16:32):
Yeah. And also know what, but you know, another thing too, as far
as the interpersonal office dynamics and, and, and, and things
that to your, what I was saying about the old guard,
you know, s using
things that he knows will trigger Matt because
he's like, you know, you said the word lame. You Know, that word
is very triggering for Matt to just basically, like, again,

(16:54):
shoot.

>> Sarah (16:54):
You know, that was Quinn.

>> Will (16:56):
Yeah. Yeah. Excuse me. Yeah, yeah, yeah, Quinn. Yeah.
but, yeah, but my point stands that, you know, people
know, like, what will get the boss triggered and,
and, and use that to their advantage, you know, to be able
to, you know, try to, to get their way
as far as, you know, an assignment or whatever.

>> Sarah (17:13):
But that's also was triggering
to Sal M. Too. Like,
it's, it's that
they, they do two things with that line. I love that
line. It's why I wrote it down. It's because,
like, on the one hand, yes,
I see the way she even says it. I

(17:35):
don't know. I think on a subconscious level, she knew
that would touch a nerve because she's dealing with two
old white men. Yeah.
Who clearly also want to be cool.
Like, she knows them. But I also.
She threw it out because, like, it was, it felt
like a natural response to that idea. Like, are you

(17:55):
kidding me? Especially given the age difference.
and, and the way it was received. I like
how it then ties back into what we see
of Sal interacting with his daughters.
And so when he comes forward and
admits, like, why it's so
bothersome, everything that

(18:16):
Quinn's doing, like, it ties all
back to him, like,
feeling as though he doesn't have
that family unit together. He's failing
there, and so his job is all he has. Like,
like to what you said, there's a lot of
different angles in this episode in terms of

(18:36):
office politics that
we see and have seen
in our everyday lives as well.
and, and then it just, like,
it, it touches on kind of a
discussion we had last week about Matt's
ego because, and,

(18:57):
and which carries through in the
next episode, which is, I mean,
IMDb even put it in their,
summary. Like, Matt's ego is put to the test
when his new doctor girlfriend brings him to a charity
gala. So we're
talking, we're gonna talk about the pediatric

(19:17):
oncologist, which.
Okay. I,
I, I did a mental note
to try to re. Watch some of this episode,
because I'm gonna, I'm just gonna be honest with y' all. I don't
know what happened. I was
watching the episode, and

(19:37):
then I saw where it was going. He. He
bet on the golf. Golf, trip.
He won. And then, and then
there was arguments, blah, blah, blah. For
whatever reason, it's like I blacked out. I
don't, I see him in the ambulance, and I'm like, wait a
second. How I didn't
see the hygiene setting curve.

(20:01):
Like I saw him run into a waiter but like, and
follow like. I don't know, I felt,
I've like why am I, I feel like I'm missing gaps.
I don't need a play by play. But I just find it
funny that I like made it through the
episode and then for some reason I have these holes. I'm like, well,
how did that escalate?

>> Will (20:20):
It did escalate. It did escalate pretty quickly. I
will, I agree. Yeah, because I mean he, because
yeah, they were having the, the back and forth.
and, and, and of course he gets
to you know, throughout the, throughout the evening
because you know, whenever we first start the episode they were,
they were putting together a film of course. And you

(20:41):
know, try, you know, they had, they're trying to get their own
deadline to get the trailer done.
And, and so it was. Yeah, but
you're right. I mean we went from like
everything was swimming and then it just escalates.
The next thing you know you've like fallen over tables, blasted.
And he's like, he wakes up in the,

(21:02):
he's at, you know, the episode ends and he's got his hand bandage
and, and yeah, he's gonna
go, yeah.

>> Sarah (21:08):
And then he does the taunt like and you know what's going to be in that
room? A screen.

>> Will (21:13):
Yep.

>> Sarah (21:15):
The. I like it was, it was
nice then to go from like such
an office heavy episode into
Matt in his day to day life.
The one thing that bothered me though throughout
this episode is this show takes place in
la. So

(21:35):
you're telling me that
all of those doctors who
live in LA
are just like
they, they don't, they, they don't care
at all about film and t, like,
like I get it, they're smart and priorities

(21:57):
and everything, but I'm just like you.
Technically. You could have been a doctor anywhere.
So. Why. I don't.

>> Will (22:05):
Yeah, well, see, I, I, I, you
know, that's, you know,
we should, we should like, we should have our friend
Jackie, who's the actress, you know, she's a doctor but
also you know, but
she also lives in LA and just talk to someone who like lives
in that world because I'll be very curious

(22:26):
to see or, or you know, I
have a buddy of mine, a good friend of mine lives in la and
and it's funny, you
know, they don't bring up like you're in Tinseltown and
all that, but it's just sort of like it's Sort of like in your
backyard, but it's just sort of like. It's kind of like
no big deal for him. And he works at USC

(22:47):
and actually works with. It's funny enough he actually works with.
With Arnold. He's a professor in the
Schwarzenegger Institute.

>> Sarah (22:55):
But I, I understand the
no big deal about it and like
that makes sense to me.

>> Will (23:02):
Yeah.

>> Sarah (23:03):
But this, the writing of these
people was like
intentionally not. Oh, no
big deal, intentionally like disdain.

>> Will (23:14):
Yeah, well, I think that, yeah, well,
I think that was, I mean that was part of the, you know, with the.
Well, at the very, at the, at the framing, at the beginning of the
episode because, you know, because you had
two, two people from two different worlds.

>> Sarah (23:30):
Yeah.

>> Will (23:30):
Yeah. And. And so I think it, I think it
was just. It they used that to
just, I think really
just show that tension between, you know,
you know, where you have Matt who like, you know, something
you said earlier that we're out of the office now and
we're actually out in the,

(23:52):
you know, regular world. Even though these people are like
super high achieving medical
professionals. but
you know, in Matt's world, you know, he's a, you know, he
really, he's in control in that
studio environment and stuff. And he's the ball, he's the boss,
he's the guy. And then when he gets over here with the. These other
folks, they're like, you know, it was almost.

(24:14):
And sometimes when I was watching episode it was just like nicey,
nice pat, pat on your head. Like, you know, we actually,
we have a real job. We, we are, we are heroes here.
We save kids from cancer and, and you're just a guy
who just, just makes movies and yeah, it's all nice and
stuff, but you know, you don't know pressure.
We know pressure. And it was just. For me it was just like

(24:35):
that through line throughout was just.
It really fed when I think back to some of the discussions
we've had about Matt and his, and his, his insecurities
like, and, and things.
I think it just really, to me it just like pulled everything ahead as
far as like. Okay, yeah, it made those other earlier
episodes really stand out

(24:57):
more to me. And I really, like I said one of the things I
didn't say at the beginning. I mean this, this block that we watched this week
so are probably my three favorite episodes of the season so far.

>> Sarah (25:07):
Right. Yeah. Like, I understand the
tension and, and the, the
patronizing and, or
patronizing of Matt
and they, that they get the
viewer to, to kind
of view these people through his perspective
of, of really, like,

(25:28):
belittling him and making him and his
job feel so much smaller.
And, and it plays on that insecurity that they've
already touched on in previous episodes.
I just for, and
I understand this is a comedy, but
I don't know why we couldn't have had him a

(25:49):
better project that he had to be on the phone about
than like, like the fact
that I want to be
on Matt's side, but it's really hard to when he's
making that type of shit movie.

>> Will (26:02):
Right.

>> Sarah (26:02):
Like, pun intended.

>> Will (26:03):
Yeah.

>> Sarah (26:04):
So.

>> Will (26:05):
Well, see, that's just it too, because, I mean, while he's sitting there
and he was trying to, like, I, think that was the genius to me about
this episode because he, he was trying to still
make, make it feel relevant by saying, look,
I am trying to help you all out with all this medical
disinformation out here, you know,
and, and, and, and, you know, I'm, you know,

(26:25):
showing how the art can, like, be used for, for good
things, even though it was a Johnny Knoxville movie.

>> Sarah (26:31):
But, right, right, like,
like, with that line, I would have
appreciated better had it, had I been able
to, because as a viewer, you know what the movie is, and you're
like, that's a, that's a stretch. Like, I
don't understand. I, I, I mean, that's
brought up at the beginning of the episode as well. So

(26:52):
it's just, I mean, for whatever reason,
that plot point didn't work for, for me.
I understand why they did it, but it just,
yeah, it didn't, carry over to make
me, that supportive of Matt.

>> Will (27:06):
I don't see. Yeah. So, you know, it's funny,
I, I wasn't, it wasn't where I was like, even feeling
supportive of Matt. I mean, I, I, I get where,
I get where he was coming from, trying to, trying
to make himself and you
know, and like you said, I am the, the
summary of the episode really hits it. I mean,

(27:27):
it really, you know, it is really
dealing with his ego and stuff. So. Yeah, I mean,
yeah, and so I don't know if it was where I
was like, I wasn't feeling sympathetic towards Matt during
the episode. I was like, I mean, I, I, I,
maybe, maybe not sympathetic is the right word. I,
wasn't like, agreeing with him.

>> Sarah (27:46):
No, but you were on his side.

>> Will (27:48):
Yeah, but I see where he was coming from.

>> Sarah (27:50):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, like, and I, I
did, I did, like, like the
remark. People in the arts, we Fund your little science
projects.

>> Will (27:59):
Yeah, yeah.

>> Sarah (28:00):
And. And I wish
that it delved more into that.
Just this idea. Like,
yes, what we do is not
life saving. However,
like, we make the money that allows
you to do what you do through charity.

(28:21):
So. So, like,
like, they could have done some very interesting
things there. and granted this has been renewed
for season two and we still have more episodes to come, so maybe
they will. But, like, I wish they
had played more into that,
as opposed to some of the other stuff. But
I also, I. Matt is a giant man

(28:44):
child. So what you do. What you do.
and then that brings us to the last episode
and I. Your point earlier about how you
think, like, these three episodes are so far
your favorite that we've seen. I
completely agree. Like, these. The.
The episodes are getting better and better.

(29:06):
and, of course, after I mentioned last
week that we haven't talked about Kool Aid, the
seventh episode, titled Casting,
is all about Kool Aid. As the team
scrambles to come up with a movie cast for the movie
that won't offend anyone.
And now, now the.

(29:26):
This was fascinating.
This, this was really just. I want
more of this.

>> Will (29:33):
Yes.

>> Sarah (29:34):
As someone who loves movies and loves
TV shows, the. To
get an insight about this kind of
logic, especially in this day and age,
like, you know, these kind of conversations
happen. And so I thought. I thought this
episode, just was. Was really
s. Executed in such a

(29:56):
smart way.

>> Will (29:58):
Yeah.

>> Sarah (29:59):
because. And it all starts with
Maya looking at the board and being like.
And. And. And being like,
oh, yeah,
cool. Ice Cube is black.

>> Will (30:14):
Yeah.

>> Sarah (30:14):
No, no, you can't say that.

>> Will (30:16):
You can't say that.

>> Sarah (30:18):
And then. And then like, he. And then Matt's
like, oh, my God, he's black. Is this
racist? Did we do something racist?
Oh, my God. And yeah. And
then the irony of it all.

>> Will (30:35):
Yeah.

>> Sarah (30:36):
At the end of it, it's not even. Like,
the cast wasn't the big issue. It was
the fact that Matt allowed the director
to hire AI to replace
animators.

>> Will (30:48):
Yep.

>> Sarah (30:50):
very smart episode.

>> Will (30:52):
Yeah, very, very smart episode. I mean,
did. I mean, it's just, you know, because it.
All the things, you know, we see it on social media, you
know, with like, for, you know, think. I think, like Snow White recently
as far as, you know, the issues there. I mean, when there's
any number of, like, you know, fill in the blank
project. I mean, think about Ghost in the show with, like, Scarlett

(31:13):
Johansson. I mean, movies will literally.

>> Sarah (31:16):
Wasn't that one of the big, talking points with
the Strikes.

>> Will (31:21):
Oh, the AI.

>> Sarah (31:22):
Yeah, yeah.

>> Will (31:23):
Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, the strikes. I mean this was so,
it was so on point with so many different things. I mean, even
now with like, even out with,
with with some of the video game stuff and,
and, and, and voiceover work. And I mean
the AI is still a big, big, big issue. And
so this, this, this film like hits on. This

(31:43):
episode hits on so, so many things that.
Yeah. it, it, it, I. It was.
Yeah. And it was just like. Well, you.
It's, it's the, it's, it's the. Well, it was the
well meaning, well intentioned
thing of, of you know, white people. White people.

>> Sarah (32:02):
I can say it, you can see it.
I can say.

>> Will (32:08):
Yeah, it was like. Yeah. you know, thinking about
Juneteenth coming up here, you know, because it's like after George
Floyd, it was just like, you know, it was like you
create a holiday. But that wasn't what we wanted.

>> Sarah (32:19):
Right. Yeah, yeah,
yeah. I just. And then, and
then every time, like, I think it
was Sal who always brought up this is why we need
to go lesbian.
Lesbian. And we can have an adopted
Asian kid. And, and then

(32:41):
it's like, oh, well, now we have the entire Kool
Aid family. Black.

>> Will (32:46):
Black. Yeah,
they go to the. Yeah. So then they go to the, they go to, you know,
they go to the black guy in the room. It's like, it's this offensive.

>> Sarah (32:55):
Yeah, yeah.

>> Will (32:56):
And then they go to Quinn. It's disappointed.

>> Sarah (32:59):
Yeah, yeah, yeah. But
it's just hadn't.
I was, I was listening to,
the. That Was Us podcast this morning because they
dropped a new episode.

>> Will (33:15):
Okay.

>> Sarah (33:16):
And they, they brought up
casting and
and just how as actors, like in
this day and age, social media and
the casting directors and the
people who are hiring, like, I'm surprised
this episode didn't go there, but I

(33:38):
also know that they got held back a little bit
about like these days it's
like, oh, let me see your headshot. But also let me
see your Instagram account and your Twitter account or
X, account so we can know how many followers you have.
So we can know like how many eyes are
bringing. You are bringing people to the

(33:59):
project. And, and then we're going to need this amount
of people to,
to really get this, this
project off the ground. So
like, it'll be interesting to.
Especially with both Sal and
Matt.

>> Will (34:17):
Yeah.

>> Sarah (34:17):
as these older white characters
to, to see how, they
talk about how Hollywood has changed
due to social media.

>> Will (34:28):
Yeah. Yeah. I was, I was thinking about that too. I
was I was listening to some folks talk about Mia Goth,
who was, you know, recently cast in Star wars. And that
was that same point about the, the, the
influencer culture. and, and is it
excluding, you know, real talent?
Because it's not about the talent. Sometimes

(34:48):
you're right. I mean, you know that like their discussion is like, what
do you bring now as far as your social media? Because
that's just, you know, such a. And I think maybe one of
the. Didn't. Did Maya. Didn't they touch on that a little bit?
Maybe in an earlier episode. I have to go back and re. Watch the series.
But, but you know, Maya might.

>> Sarah (35:05):
Have said something, but they didn't.
Like even if she has a line about it, they could
do an entire episode because it's so
prominent and it could go in a few different ways
about it. But it's something
else that I've been watching lately is
kind of funny. Started there in the room in

(35:26):
review of Superman.

>> Will (35:28):
Okay.

>> Sarah (35:29):
So. And and yeah, this is my other
go to for long term, long time
listeners. if you're.
And believe me. Okay. This is one of those
things. Greg Miller is obsessed with Superman.
So that episode I think is close to
three hours long.

>> Will (35:47):
Oh gosh. Yeah.

>> Sarah (35:48):
And he, they talk about
Marlon Brando.
Okay. And they talk about
some of the, especially the Christopher
Reeve interview where he
talks a little bit about Brando. And it's like
clearly they didn't have the best working relationship

(36:08):
and just this idea that Marlon
Brando. We didn't have social media
back then.

>> Will (36:15):
Right.

>> Sarah (36:15):
But that actor was in such
a place with the, with
the journalists.

>> Will (36:22):
Yeah.

>> Sarah (36:23):
That he managed to get anything
he wanted. And like if he came to set, if
they wanted him to be. Look a certain way,
he, like he didn't care. He would just come, however
he wanted to. So. So we
go from that to. In this day and age
where, where

(36:45):
in a way it hasn't changed because
now it's just like, oh, they're allowed to
do that because they're bringing 15 million
followers to this project.
Yeah. It's just,
it's, it's crazy how technology
has changed the world
yet also not because

(37:08):
like we're still humans and so our
behaviors are not that far different
than before the technology boom.

>> Will (37:15):
yeah, that's a good point. I mean, you're right. I mean it really is, it's just
plug in different. Yeah. I mean it just,
the dynamic is the same as you said it's just instead of it,
you know, back in the day, it would just be like. Because
you would need you. You would have to have that, that the movie
star. I mean, this is the whole. And I wonder too, if the studio is going to get into this

(37:35):
as well about having, you
know, as far as casting, I know this was. The issue with, was
race with this, this
episode, but, having the bankable movie
star because, you know, back, you know,
before, you really did need to have like
the name like, you know, like a Tom Cruise or a

(37:55):
Harrison Ford or whoever, you know, you know, fill in the blank.
Actor, Actress. Now it's like you said, I mean,
it's, it's, it's like the influencer, you
know, who has the most, the most social media followers. Not
necessarily who's the, not necessarily who's the most bankable
star to get, you know, get people butts and seats
so.

>> Sarah (38:15):
Well, are there bankable stars
anymore?

>> Will (38:18):
That's just. Yeah, I don't think.

>> Sarah (38:20):
Yeah, because even Robert
Downey Jr. Back in the day, he, he
leaves adventures. He's the biggest star on the planet.
He goes and makes a few movies. Nobody cares.
Yeah, like, the reason
why the stars are
disappearing, I don't think is because of influencers or

(38:40):
anything. I think it's because of ip.

>> Will (38:43):
Exactly. Yeah.

>> Sarah (38:44):
And there's, there's. Yeah, you can
bring somebody's name to a project,
but their name ain't gonna
be as big of a seller as Captain
America.

>> Will (38:55):
Yep. Or, or, or, or, or Kool Aid.
Which, which.

>> Sarah (38:59):
Or Kool Aid, like just like Barbie,
you know.

>> Will (39:03):
Yeah. Yeah. I mean, I'm glad they brought it. Yeah, I'm glad they brought
the, brought it back back to. Because I was wondering. To your, you
know, you asked the question last week. So whenever I watched the episode this
week where Kool Aid has returned, I'm like, yes, we're back to
that issue. You know, so again, that, that also touches on
the ip. I mean, to your point that, that,
that's so. There was just so many, there's so

(39:23):
many things in this episode where
that, that, that that did work and they did have, you know, and
speaking of like the name, they did have a name with, you know,
you know, cast an Ice Cube to, to,
to be the voice of, of Kool Aid. So
the Kool Aid man. So yeah, so it had so many
elements and, and I loved Ice Cube's response too, whenever

(39:44):
he, whenever he realized that Nic stole, you know, when, you know,
the Reddit found out that AI was going to be
used to animate. And, you know, it's just like AI,
you know, so it's just. And. And Nic
Stoler like, you know, creeping off the stage and Matt just, like, standing
there and just like, Just like the emperor. No clothes at that point.

>> Sarah (40:03):
We're gonna, we're gonna see Sandra O
eventually, right? Because I love that her head
shot was on there. And she's the voice
of, Debbie from Invincible.

>> Will (40:14):
She is. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. And, yeah,
and there was another, you know, the. Actually the person who asked
about the AI as soon as they were like,
wearing the Homelander costume at the comic.

>> Sarah (40:26):
Yeah, yeah. And. And you.
Homelander. And I'm like, oh, oh, my God. Homelander's in
the.

>> Will (40:34):
Seth. Ro. Seth rooster on
the Voice.

>> Sarah (40:38):
I. I hope everyone took note of back.
I think even in the pilot when I brought up,
like, there better be a crossover.

>> Will (40:47):
Yeah.

>> Sarah (40:47):
With the boys. Like, this has to happen.
Like Antony Star, please stand up. Okay.

>> Will (40:55):
Season two. Season two.

>> Sarah (40:58):
yeah. All right, well, unless you had
any more hot takes or
anything more to discuss, I'm. I'm
good to wrap up. I mean, it was short,
but it was sweet.

>> Will (41:11):
Yeah, well. Oh, that's the last thing I'll say about the
show. These episodes, the run times have been really good. There's
only been, you know, they're bringing back the 20 plus
minute comedy. You don't need to stretch it out. You don't. You know,
that's the other thing I do appreciate about these episodes.

>> Sarah (41:25):
Yeah, I, I agree as well, is
that, with the pace,
they, have definitely structured their
episodes very well
and arguably are structure structuring
the season, very well as. Because
we, we know we're headed in a direction, especially with this
cool koolaid direction. I mean, we saw it from. It

(41:48):
was just an idea. And now we're going through casting
and now we're. We're waiting for it to get,
like, really green lit.
now will it get made? I don't know.
Here's another thing I'm waiting to resurface. Like
the, the script of Jamestown.

(42:08):
Yeah, that's come out of
nowhere, so. All
right, well, next week we will be back to wrap
this season with the final three episodes, before
we. We jump into,
the next Marvel project,
which is called. What is the next one called?

>> Will (42:30):
Ironheart.

>> Sarah (42:31):
Ironheart. Yes. I was like, it's called Iron
something, but I. Yeah.

>> Will (42:35):
Iron Heart. Yeah. Speaking of Robert Downey Jr. He actually, you know, he
was. He was. He. I think he gave a shout out to
Dominique, the actress who plays Riri, on his
socials this week. Speaking of socials.

>> Sarah (42:45):
Oh, that's sweet. Yeah, that's sweet. That
show needs some help because, man, they have not done a good
job marketing.

>> Will (42:52):
No.

>> Sarah (42:53):
Very late to the game. But, you know, sometimes.
Sometimes sleepers happen. So we shall
see. All right, well, why don't you tell our listeners
where they can find you?

>> Will (43:03):
Yeah, speaking of socials, you can find me on all the socials at
Will and Polk. W I L L M M P O
L K. And you can find.

>> Sarah (43:10):
Me there, too at SJ Belmont. SJBLM O N T.
