Just wanna say congratulationsto McKenna and Joe, who are
getting married next Septemberat Aria in Prospect, Connecticut.
They listen to the Stress-freeWedding Planning Podcast, and it
helps them plan their wedding.
All the best to you, McKenna, and Joe.
Let's get this thing started.
It's more than just music, everyone.
Now, when most couples think abouthiring a dj, the first thing that
(04:23):
comes to mind is music, right?
That's a natural thing to think about.
The playlist, the dancing, the party.
Exactly.
But here's the thing.
A great DJ and MC areso much more than that.
A DJ, you gotta remember, a DJplays the music, so they have
to know what's coming up next.
The next five songs, they'vealready got it planned and
(04:45):
programmed, so they keep a flow.
An MC is somebody who knows howto speak and get your attention,
and keeps the evening flowingby telling you what's happening.
They're the ones setting theatmosphere, guiding the flow of the
day, and keeping guests engaged.
It's about creating energy, not justplaying songs and announcing names.
(05:07):
That's right, and it starts evenearlier than people realize from the
moment the guests enter the ceremonyspace or cocktail hour, the music
and announcements set the mood.
Is it warm and welcoming?
Is it elegant and formal?
Is it upbeat and fun?
Those choices don't happen by accident.
And the best part, Sal, is thatwhen it's done really well, guests
(05:31):
don't even think about it or notice.
They just feel it.
They're relaxed.
They know where to go.
They know what to do.
They know when the dance flooropens and knows when to party.
That's the invisible magica professional brings.
Look an MC/DJ you could think of them asbeing the quarterbacks of the reception.
(05:51):
They keep things on track, introductions, toast, special dances, cake cutting.
All those little transitions couldfeel clunky, if not managed well.
A strong DJ and MC pair make thosetransitions smooth so your wedding
feels seamless instead of stop and go.
And let's be honest, when thingsdon't flow well, people notice.
(06:15):
You know, it's like having a song endand then you hear nothing for three
seconds and then music starts up again.
Well, a bad DJ or MC, that's theirM.O. You'll probably be at a wedding
where no one knew what was happening.
Most of the time when sound I do weddings, there is no dead air, there is no space.
(06:35):
Most of the time the guests justhear the music, and they know what's
happening, and because of the MC skills, they know what's about to happen.
A great DJ prevents these gaps.
So YOU stay stress-free andyour guests stay in the moment.

Alright, let's break this down.
The DJ is focused on the sound, the vibe, and the technical aspects of the music.
Good DJs are reading the room, adjusting their energy, and ensuring
every moment has the right soundtrack.
(07:21):
Exactly Sam, the DJ's the behind thescenes strategists, mixing songs,
building energy, and ensuring thevolume and timing are just perfect.
But if no one tells yourguest what's happening, even
the best music can fall flat.
That's where the MC comes in.
That's right.
The MC is the voice of the evening.
(07:42):
Now, sometimes the DJ andthe MC are combined into one.
That's what I do.
I do the DJing and the MC.
So, an MC, their priority is making theannouncements, introducing the wedding
party and keep the guests informed.
Like when the cake cutting'shappening, when the first dance is
(08:02):
happening, when the bride's gonnadance with her dad, they set the tone.
A confident and friendly MC makes yourevent feel polished and professional
while a nervous or over the top, MCcan completely throw off the vibe.
That is so true.
The MC is like the host of your wedding.
(08:23):
They're the bridge between thecouple, the vendors, and the guests.
They ensure that everyone inthat room is on the same page and
knows exactly what's gonna happen.
When those two roles workseamlessly; it feels effortless.
It's not forced.
The day flows naturally.
(08:44):
No one's wondering what'shappening or what's coming up next.
Everyone stays engaged.
And here's the beauty of it.
When the DJ and MC are insync, they can pivot quickly
if something unexpect happens.
Whether it's a delay in the kitchen, amissing speaker, or sudden weather change.
They can adjust the energy andkeep things moving without anyone
(09:06):
realizing there was a hiccup.
That's right.
That's the difference between justhaving music and having a professional
who will manage your event.
A lot of people think that theycan just play Spotify and it
will run the entire wedding.
Well, who's going to MC?
Who's going to keep forward progress?
(09:27):
Who's going to keep the music going?
It's more than music.
It's about creating theexperience from start to finish.
Now let's take a quick recap.
Remember, a DJ isn't just pushing play, they're setting the atmosphere, guiding
the flow, keeping guests engaged, and the MC, they're the voice of the
evening, making sure everyone knowswhat's happening while setting the tone.
(09:51):
When those two roles work together, your wedding feels seamless,
stress-free, and unforgettable.
Coming up next, we'll share some real-lifeexamples of how this plays out, including
the wins and the lessons learned.

Welcome back to the discussion, the DJMC secret to transforming your wedding.
(12:22):
I'm Sal After Hours events of New England.
And I'm Sam from Atmosphere Productions.
We've already discussed how DJs andMCs have their own roles to create
the vibe, keeping your guests in theknow, and keeping things flowing.
Let's talk about what happenswhen things aren't done well.
We've all been to the wedding wherethe DJ is basically a playlist on
(12:45):
shuffle and no one knows what's next.
The energy starts and stops, and youcan feel the guests losing interest.
Yeah.
So of course the couple is leftto direct things on the spot.
"Hey, it's time for the toast." "Shouldwe do the cake now?" This kills the
whole vibe, and this adds stress becausesuddenly the couple is managing the
(13:07):
timeline instead of enjoying the moment.
That's what an MC will do.
He'll make sure that allthose bumps are smoothed out.
You know, Sam, on one of those rareoccasions that I was actually able
to go to wedding and didn't actuallyhave to DJ it, I remember attending
this wedding where there was noclear MC after dinner, half the
(13:28):
guests were still at their tables.
Others were at the bar, and no one knewthat the first dance was about to start.
By the time people realize they'dalready missed half of it; that's
a memory you just can't getback, and you just can't redo it.
Yes.
And you also have the samething for the, the cake cutting.
If you suddenly just have the couple dothe cake cutting and nobody knows, by the
(13:52):
time they're halfway through, people arejust realizing, "oh, they're doing the
cake." That's why I always recommend tomy couples at least, announce the cake
cutting, even if you're not gonna do it.
People love to take a picture of that.
Now, on the flip side, when youhave a professional DJ and MC team,
the difference is night and day.
(14:12):
I've worked weddings wherethe catering was running late.
So instead of just letting the guestssit and wait, we did a dance set.
I got on the mic, got the energyup, got the guests on the dance
floor, and we danced for 15 to 20minutes until the food was ready.
Then we had 'em sit down.
See, everybody thought that was partof the planning, except it wasn't.
(14:33):
We were covering for the caterers.
That's the magic.
Your guests know where to be, when tocheer and when to hit the dance floor.
And from there, our couple getsto actually relax , knowing
someone is handling the flow.
They get to live in the momentinstead of worrying about schedule.
Bottom line, Sal, a great DJ andMC, they will save you stress.
(14:57):
They elevate your whole celebrationand they make sure every moment
feels intentional and not accidental.
If you're planning a wedding, here are a few things to keep in
mind when choosing your DJ and MC.
First and foremost, askabout their MC style.
(15:18):
Do they match the energyyou are looking for?
Perhaps you're looking for somethingfun and upbeat, or maybe you want
something classy and elegant.
Not every MC can switch gears, soensure that their personality aligns
with the vibe of your wedding.
That's a great point, Sal.
I've seen couples hire a DJ MC,who's technically skilled, maybe
(15:40):
like a radio or nightclub dj, butwhose personality doesn't match.
Imagine wanting a romanticlow-key atmosphere, but your MC
is cracking jokes and yelling intothe mic as if it was a nightclub.
A total mismatch.
Agreed.
Next.
If these are two separatepeople, look for the teamwork.
(16:01):
Some DJs handle both roles themselves.
Just like you do, Sam.
While others work as part of a team.
Either approach can be greatas long as they're comfortable
balancing those responsibilities.
Ask how they divide the roles sonothing slips through the cracks.
And of course, don't forgetabout how you handle transitions.
If you, you mix beat to beat or yousegue, you want somebody who can read
(16:27):
the crowd but also read the music, and we do what I say, weave in between
the music so that everything flows.
You don't want awkward silencesas we mentioned before, you don't
want your guests standing aroundunsure what's gonna happen next?
A pro will tell you howthey guide the night.
When they cue the toast, how they bringthe energy back up after dinner, and
(16:50):
how they keep the dance floor full.
That's the difference between anokay night and an unforgettable one.
Another biggie is reading the crowd.
It's really difficult to teacha DJ this, but a good DJ doesn't
just let the playlist flow.
The list that you gave theDJ, he shouldn't be just
(17:11):
playing 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7.
They should be mixed.
So if you've got like for instance, anineties vibe going, then lean into it.
Keep going.
If you've got a club mix going andeverybody's partying on the dance
floor, you should be able to readthe crowd and follow on from that.
And finally, here's the mostimportant tip, something you
(17:33):
think that may be common sense.
Make sure you actually like them.
You're spending one of the biggestthings of your life with this person.
If you feel comfortable with them, if theylisten to you, if you feel like they get
your vision, that's half the battle won.
Ain't that the truth?
Because at the end ofthe day, your DJ and MC.
(17:56):
Aren't just behind the DJ booth, they'repart of the heart of your celebration.
We've just explained more thanmusic, the DJ and MC secret
to transforming your wedding.
At the end of the day, the DJand MC are more than music.
They're memory makers, and stress busters.
When they do their job right, youwon't even notice the little things.
(18:19):
They just flow and you'll get to do whatyou're supposed to do at your wedding.
Celebrate and enjoy every moment.
