When three men subsequently disappeared and their remains were found burned according to the exact method Upfield had described, police didn't just investigate the obvious suspect, they investigated the author himself.
Decades later, historians uncovered an even darker truth, transforming this tale of fiction inspiring reality into something far more sinister.
