(00:09):
Welcome to the Cycle Breaker podcast. I'm
your host, Suki Kaur, a certified
feminist life coach, and I'm here to help
you navigate being a woman of color
entrepreneur, breaking generational
cycles and letting go of imposter
syndrome. Here you will learn to create
self-awareness around the truth of who
you are and see your ability to

(00:30):
change how you experience yourself. And
further the results you create in your
life. O let's break these much needed
cycles together here in community.
So today I want to talk about something

(00:50):
that comes up frequently in my
consultations when I hear,
you know, women of color entrepreneurs,
especially those that are first
generation, explaining where they are
with their business and their goals and
what they want to do. And of course, you
knowWe are high
achievers. We want to set really big
goals and put an action plan and and

(01:12):
get the help we need to move forward. And
one of the things that gets overlooked in
all this is, you know, how do you relate
to your business?What's your relationship
with it?Is it where, you know, you see it
as a hobby, which comes up often of like
my business is just a hobby, even if the
person has. Our revenue coming in
and they want to do something bigger.

(01:33):
There is something in their back of their
mind where it's a hobby and
it's it's not a full on like business
that they own. So is it a hobby? Is it
just a passion or is it something that
you know that you would tell anyone and
everyone about what you do because it's
so important to you?Or is it just
something that you know you kind of feel

(01:55):
comfortable sharing with some people that?
You feel are safe in the sense that they
won't, you know, give you any criticism
and that keeps you safe enough and a
little bit out of your comfort zone where
that's like a sweet spot spot for most
people. You know, they're OK with
sharing their purposeful business
that's been on their heart for so long,

(02:17):
but they're OK with sharing it with some
people. And that's why a lot of the
hesitation comes in with with,
for example, like sharing a
social media. A post about it and there's
some, you know, hesitation and some
mind drama about like, should I use my
personal page or should I use my create a

(02:37):
new page? And should I share it with the
people in my life right now, my family
and friends or just the strangers? This is
all this stuff, right?And I think it's
important to know where you're where you
are and how you relate to your business
because I think that's step number one
where you. It's essential
that you claim your business and you

(02:58):
claim the fact that this is
something that's been on your heart. It's
purpose-driven, it fulfills you. And I
think start anchoring yourself with that
self-belief that the fact that,
you know, you see it as so important and
it and being the way that you want to
make an impact in the world, that that's
so important to start owning that. And

(03:20):
I'm not saying that it has to be
immediately where you tell all your
friends and family, but. We start owning
it step by step because what happens is
we set these big goals and when we don't
truly fully own it, there are things that
we hesitate to do that seem simple
and it like it just it just
isn't when it comes down to it. You're
like, you know, I can simply do this when

(03:41):
if it's somebody else's business and I'm
working for them. But when it comes to
me, I have trouble, for example, like
showing up as a face, like showing up.
In a vendor Expo for my
field and being the face of it, like
there's some hesitation and of course
like you know, you are someone that is
hard working and is ambitious and wants

(04:03):
to go all in and you have these skills
from your job or your career so far and
you just need to transfer it to this
business. And sometimes I think as women
of color, especially those that are first
generation, this may be the first time
where. You know you're doing something
that you want to do, and it's not the
easier route. It's just the fact that you

(04:24):
want to do it for yourself. That this is
something that's personal to you is not
for, you know,
outwardly getting validation. It's really
just personal to you and what you want
to do and you're giving it a shot. And
and trust me, it makes sense to have
hesitations where you're not fully there
to own it, but. In this episode, I just

(04:46):
want to, you know, highlight the
importance of owning it because
it is if this work is not done up
front when you start working on your
goals, when you're setting your business
goals. Then you'll always be in
this like confused state of why can't
I just do this simple thing? And it seems
simple, but you know, as I mentioned on

(05:08):
some other episodes where are the way
that we think about something
like creates our feelings about it and
our feelings drive what we do and what we
don't do. So we're not feeling confident
or well. Confidence, I feel like comes
with experience. When you show up, you
build the confidence. But when we're not
feeling truly

(05:31):
like motivated or we're not
feeling like we can
actually own what we can
do and we're just trying to almost like
feeling like an imposter where, you know,
we have one step in the door where we're
passionate about this and if we're
showing up to these events. Sort of
talking about it, but then in the back of
your mind you know that there's more

(05:53):
self-doubt than there is
self-trust and then that kind of.
Seesaw keeps going where you're not able
to fully own it and there you're the
volume of the self-doubt is just higher
than the volume of the self-belief and
the self-trust that you need. So I just
want to share this because you know if

(06:13):
you really take a step back and think
about it like what would like back in the
day when Facebook was was
for. Just college
students. So that's when I first got it
where you needed a college e-mail address
in order to make a Facebook account. And
on this was way back and I don't even

(06:34):
know if the status thing is as big of a
deal anymore. But I remember the
relationship status being a big thing of
people would put it's complicated. I'm
single, I'm taken, I'm in a relationship,
I'm married, I'm engaged. It'd be like a
whole entire status where this is like
you are claiming your status. with
somebody else or, you know,

(06:55):
in this realm, right? And like, I just
want you to think of if you were to put,
if there was an actual status button for
your business, like, what would that be
for you?And it's okay if it's, you know,
it's complicated or it's like,
it's a hobby for now. Like, it's okay to
have that. There's nothing wrong. We're
not trying to... Be here or we should

(07:17):
like have those rules or we should be all
in and all these things. It's just good
for you to know if this is a relationship
I have with it and perhaps it kind of
explains of how I'm showing up to it. So
if I don't feel like you know I'm
fully in like in like in any relationship
we're not going to really go all in and

(07:38):
put all our trust and and be
uncomfortable and have those
conversations and. Do that internal work
when we don't think that it's really that
important of a relationship, when we just
in some way there's cognitive dissonance
when it's so important to us. But then we
have a hard time saying, oh, actually
this is, this is more than just a hobby.

(07:59):
This is like something that's been on my
heart for so long. I want to work toward
financial freedom and I really don't want
to do it in like. Perhaps I or do
it in conjunction with the more
traditional role I may have picked. So
it's just that there
are reasons why you may not be like,
oh, I'm in love with my business and this

(08:22):
drives me and this fulfills me so much.
It's so purposeful. There's reasons why,
right?Like, of course you can think of
reasons of like, is entrepreneurship even
modeled for you and your family? Is
working toward financial freedom even as
a daughter of immigrants?Is that
something that's even something
that's expected of you and you're just

(08:43):
doing this role because you want and a
lot of times? At least in my experience,
when you're doing something just because
you want, it's really difficult to
own that because it's not something
that's common for us and it's not
something that we're used to. So of
course there's reasons why we don't own
it. But I think first starting off with
setting your relationship status of where

(09:05):
you are now and where you want to be with
it is so important. And try to bridge
that gap of how you're going to get to
that and what are little things that you
know that are. getting in your way of
being like, oh, I am all in and
I am fully owning and claiming it because
there's tons of reasons. But I think for

(09:25):
this episode, I just really want you to
know that as a first step,
like having that honest
conversation with yourself is
so important. And I don't know, honestly,
umIt'll honestly, like, open
up a lot of areas where you've been
blocked, where you're just like, why

(09:45):
can't I do this simple stuff?Why can't I
just show up consistently? And I think
that'll answer a lot of the questions
rather than being like, oh, it's a you
problem, it's a personal thing. I think
we just need to work on. How we relate
to our business, what we would, what, how
we would we want to and how can we kind
of bridge that gap. So this week I'd like

(10:06):
for you to reflect on your relationship
status, how you relate to your business
and then go from there. This is a
process, right?Like it's not something
that you're going to be like, oh, this
is, we're just going to change it
overnight. It's not as easy as a status
on Facebook at all was, right. It's
actually working toward and and having
that honest conversation with yourself.

(10:27):
And I think that'll hopefully bring some
relief of like, okay, this is why things
are happening that this way. So please
reflect on that. If you have any
questions or if you want to talk, I do
offer a free consultation. So sign up for
that on my website at sukhylifecoach.com.
And if you have any questions, feel free
to send me a message on Instagram or or

(10:48):
my website or wherever you can find me. So
Hope you have a good week. Please reflect
on that cause it's really, you know, your
relationship with your business is really
the foundation of everything that you're
trying to do and all the things that all
the cycles that you're trying to break as
an entrepreneur.
