needed cycles and build an impactdriven
life you've been dreaming of right here
in community.
Hi, welcome back. I'm Suki Kaur, your
host, and I wanted to share

(00:52):
today my personal experience over the
past few weeks. I had to
actually take a break from the podcast
because of medical reasons and I've just
been recovering and getting into
the swing of things. And there were a
lot of learnings that I had
and I think it'll be helpful for you
as an entrepreneur or. As someone

(01:14):
that's hoping to become an entrepreneur
and start their business, because I
think a lot of times we, well, at least
for me, and a lot of times when I speak
to other people that they have similar
notions of what an entrepreneur is, it's
almost as if like, you know, if
you're in a corporate job, like you can
request time off or have sick time. But

(01:36):
when you're an entrepreneur and you're
relying on yourself. It's not
as flexible or it's like, you
know, you have to hustle through it. And
what I learned one, the first thing I
learned is that that's not true.
Entrepreneurs are not, you know,
exempt from life stuff. Like things can
come up. You can need to take

(01:58):
time off. There's could be unforeseen
circumstances that you cannot. You know,
project, it doesn't give you any
superpowers basically, right. So you're
not exempt from everyday life, from
emergencies, from anything that comes up.
So, but I think what's helpful and now
knowing that and having experienced it
myself, I think what's helpful is

(02:20):
just, you know, knowing that just
like we learned with at least with our
jobs, right, that. Work is not
everything. It's a part of your life.
Same thing with entrepreneurship. It
doesn't have to be that, you know, once
you commit to this, like it has to be all
or nothing or perfect or, you know,
that you just can't start back up.

(02:41):
Because I myself, I have to admit that
one thing is like, obviously you're not
exempt. The other thing is that there is
some guilt of not, you know, showing
up and doing the things that you you want
to be doing or that you normally do.
And what I've learned in my experience is
that of course you have to give yourself
grace and do what's necessary and learn

(03:02):
to prioritize. Like for me, for
instance, the first week I
really couldn't do much, so I had to
cancel my calls and not do the podcast.
And second week is like, OK, you know
what?I can do my coaching calls and do
the sessions, but I I I'm not gonna
prioritize like marketing stuff or social
media or like. Any of

(03:24):
that. So I'm able to do my sessions,
which I prioritize because I wanna show
up for like, you know, someone that has
has invested and committed or you know,
that one week I couldn't show up. Of
course I extend the calendar invite to
another week, so there's nothing lost
there, but. And things happen. Of course
we're all human, but then knowing like

(03:46):
what your priorities are, I think
that's really important. And being, you
know, open and communicating with
whoever it is that you're serving. In my
case, it's my my clients. And
the other thing is that, you know, of
course knowing that you can
prioritize and you can put a game plan
together is super helpful.

(04:08):
But I think also looking back now
and like actually preparing moving
forward, I would think that in my back
pocket, which I didn't have at this
point, I would know
who I can have as a backup, like
maybe even for
not for the podcast so much, but like
even for like marketing things or even

(04:30):
for things that you know were just put on
the back burner just because they had to.
Maybe, you know, have an idea. Well,
actually do have an idea of a
contractors, but basically like, you
know, have in your back pocket of who you
can rely on or you who you can reach
out to in case of emergency, in case of,
you know, something that comes up that
you just can't do and that you do have

(04:52):
resources. It doesn't mean that you have
to have employees because of course when
you're starting out, that's not available
to everyone and nor is it. Like
realistic to have a full on team that we,
you know, maybe used to in a corporate
environment. So I think learning to
prioritize what's necessary and doing
only that, giving yourself grace and like

(05:13):
what you just do what you need to do
because life does happen, whether it's
taking care of yourself or a loved one,
like you don't know, right?But
knowing that you're not exempt, nor
should you expect to be exempt for
everything to keep running. And that you
can give yourself grace,
prioritize, learn different
resources that may be helpful for

(05:36):
you to lean on in case, right. So
like in my case, like I don't have a
backup coach and that's something that
that's been on my mind that like, oh,
you know, even that one session that
someone missed, like maybe that was
important. That could be, um, something
that like. Moving forward, I can have
some sort of backup, someone that has

(05:57):
similar training to me that has similar
skill set and you know, or you
know just for that week and then add a
session to just make up for whatever it
is. Just having those
kind of plans helps. And then other
things like, you know, the more systems
you have in place, the less it is of
a scramble for a couple of weeks. Like if

(06:19):
for example, even for the podcast like.
This is one of my big priorities of
how I market and what I do and what I
actually really enjoy doing,
even having a few episodes recorded in
advance. And I have at, you know, at some
times, but the week that I
needed it, the couple of weeks I didn't.

(06:40):
So I think now knowing this at like, you
know, it could be helpful to just have a
few episodes. Back up my, you know,
pocket, like I can save them and
utilize them as leverage them when I need
to. I can do that. There's just certain
things that that'll just make things
easier. And the more systems you have in
place, the better. But obviously, you

(07:01):
know, especially if you're, you know,
still deciding what to do and figuring
out what what's best for you. And even if
you have like a corporate job, like
you're still juggling a ton of things,
right? But those are just things that
can help. So. I
think positioning yourself, giving
yourself, you know, putting yourself in

(07:22):
the in the position that you are
most likely to succeed helps
instead of setting yourself up for
for just, you know, no, I don't want to
say failure, but setting yourself up for
feeling kind of helpless and
putting yourself down that you are not
doing these things. That's never fun. It
never helps in any situation, especially

(07:44):
if you're dealing with something else.
So. That's just like been like some of my
learnings
and I wanted to really share that with
you. And one other thing was interesting
because I had a lot of hesitation
and especially today to like
get back on, be like, OK, let me get back
to recording my episodes, maybe record a

(08:05):
few and like just to have an open, honest
conversation, which I really enjoy doing.
And even though this is one of my
favorite ways to, you know,
like. Teach who I
can and and not
just be limited to the people that have
signed on to my one-on-one coaching
program. Like really just share what I

(08:25):
have to have to have to say and like what
I think is important. I still had
hesitation today. And somewhere my brain,
you know, it's always easy to our brain
to get used to conserving our energy. And
that comes whether or not it's good for
us or whether we love it. If we're gonna
extend our energy, it still wants to

(08:46):
protect us. So in my case, and I'm aware
of this, right?I know that this is what's
happening in my brain and it still
happens. But I had
hesitation because it was like, oh, like
it's already. Been a few and it was like
that perfectionist holding me back, right?
Like I was like, OK, if I feel like I'm
not 100% and I'm not feeling all

(09:08):
there, like it's going to come through or
like it's basically that like I need to
go all in 100% and show up and
feel great and not have any aches and
pains or whatever it is
and. That's just not
necessary. That actually extends a lot
more energy than necessary

(09:30):
or helpful, right?And
and I think like one thing that I've
learned is that showing up even a little
like, you know how you've heard like the
1% rule, like even
the 1%, even taking a few steps in what
you want to do makes a big difference.
But somewhere taking those first few

(09:51):
steps, we know that that's the hardest.
And our brain just wants to conserve that
energy and it's like, uh, forget it,
let's just not do it. So if you can't,
like for me, for instance today, it's
like, oh, if you can't record at least
two episodes and you have energy for only
one, like, let's just forget about it. Or
if like, you know, you didn't do it by
like morning, like you're like 2 hours

(10:11):
later than planned, like just forget it.
And it's so easy to do and
I think. One thing is like, you
know, we're set up to conserve energy and
our brain is just keeping us safe and all
these things like physically, right,
our biologically are set up that way. And
the other thing is that I think the

(10:31):
our mindset is more like if
if, you know, we don't see big
losses or big impact and especially
if you're working in a full-time job,
it's like you got nothing and really
nothing was lost, it's fine. And it's
almost like you go into this default
mode of, uh, this is

(10:53):
like, you know, it's not that important.
Or like, I could just do it next week. I
could just pick it up. I'm sure no one's
noticing or like, I'm sure it'll be fine.
And it's the side guts into,
it gets into a mindset of almost like
you're not, there's nothing to lose. And
it's like, but if we really think about
it, like, sure, you know, you're not

(11:13):
losing out. They're not going to make a
huge difference. But what is that
doing?That's setting yourself up to
start that habit and that,
you know, belief of, oh, if I don't show
up, nothing's gonna happen. If I don't
show up, it's not a big deal. I'm not
losing out. But actually, like,
especially if you're doing this on the

(11:34):
side, like you are you like,
what's what you're gonna lose is that,
you know what you want, right?
What you're gonna lose is that potential
to move in the direction to that you
actually prefer rather than being where
you want. So I think, I
think really understanding what are you

(11:55):
weighing it against and if it isn't an
actual loss or not, right?Cause a lot of
times entrepreneurship, we don't have to
do any of it. It's a choice like
literally. It's not the easiest
thing and it's by choice. And many of
us, the people that I coach, are first
generation women of color who have been
taught to save their money, be stable,

(12:17):
almost like serve. Like the biggest thing
you can accomplish is not be in survival
mode, which would be amazing. But then
here we are, we want to do something
that's like purposeful and give ourselves
these choices and it's
hard in the 1st place, but then alsojust.
Understanding that sometimes, like the

(12:38):
way that we're set up is not to go take
risks and do all these big things.
It's actually to conserve our energy
physically. But then also the way that,
you know, all the messaging and how we've
been raised and what messages we've been
told this version, like that actually
makes a huge impact on whether we show up
or not. So we just want to be careful

(12:58):
when there's things like this that of
course you you have grace, give yourself
grace and you rest and
deal with life things as you can
prioritize what's important in your
business, what must to be done, reach out
to resources. It's not really just
support like with your friends and
family, but even in your business you can

(13:19):
create a community and it doesn't have to
be limited. It could be, you know
Just hiring a contractor off of a a
website that you trust or just like
reaching out to a friend that's that can
lend a hand, right?And it
may cost you, but it's still better than
just feeling helpless. It's like
more so you want to protect your internal

(13:42):
experience in all this. So like
prioritizing, prioritizing what needs to
be done, creating a community for the
resources that you may need,
making sure that you know, yeah. You're
not just listening to your brain where
it's giving you hesitation and
where it's trying to have

(14:03):
perfectionism lead and not let you
move forward, even if it means making a
small dent in what you want because it's
in the direction. And then also just
being careful of that thought that
keeps coming up over and over because.
Are which will turn into a belief, right.
The things that we think about a lot turn
are are what our beliefs are. That's like

(14:24):
how I define it. Beliefs are things that
we think about a lot and start believing
for sure. Like that becomes, you know,
part of like something that is doesn't
need any more fact-checking, any further
fact-checking. So we wanna be careful of,
oh, there's nothing to really lose. It's
not a big deal because then it's like,
oh, we're just gonna be like, oh, you

(14:45):
know, if we don't. We don't
reach our goals this quarter or like
this, this 12 weeks, like it's gonna be
fine. And like, I think like
the one thing that helps me the most is
having created so much self-awareness
where I know where I am
just, you know, in need of rest and

(15:05):
need to do what I need to do versus where
I am just playing myself and saying,
oh, like it's not a big deal and I'm just
trying to kind of latch onto it or
beliefs will help me just.
Sit and chill and watch TV and be on my
phone and do whatever. Anything else that
will that will keep me from being
uncomfortable and being like I can't jump

(15:27):
100% and and questioning myself and
doing all that. So I think the
biggest lesson is yeah, entrepreneurs are
not exempt from life things
and there are ways
around it and also
being able to. Have like things
go on in our lives because we're people

(15:50):
and also come back, right, come back from
it of like learning when we're
just in need and we do need to step
back and then when we need to jump back
in because it does sometimes feel
like you're on a dive board versus
just trying to, you know, swim back like
you normally would, but you know how to

(16:10):
do. So I think just being careful of
that. So hopefully this has been helpful.
If you have had any any kind of
experience like this, feel free to reach
out. I would be happy to hear your
story and you know, bounce
back ideas and stuff for sure. So you can
message me. I have my contact information
in the show notes or you can find me on

(16:31):
Instagram at Suki under score life coach.
Well, have a good week and reflect on
this and just see you
know how.
Is something if you were, if you had to
take off like 3 weeks, what would that
situation look like? Are we, how are we
thinking about, how does that feel even
thinking of that, of having to do that?

(16:52):
Can we do that?Is it a big deal?Do you
want to stick with that belief?Where are
we with that?I think that will be helpful
as you know, especially if
you're not in it, then that would be
great to have as a proactive business
plan. So reflect on that and have a great
week.
