life as well as your business life of
course because that is why we are here.
(02:10):
Today we are talking about hard work
doesn't always work. Yes, sometimes hard
work works, but I posit that hard
work doesn't always work, especially in
today's culture. We have, in today's day
and age, with new business owners, this
(02:32):
really hustle and grind mentality. And I
am, I want to say that I'm just delivered
from it, right? My whole point in working
in business is to not work hard. Like one
of the things that my business partner and
I continue, one of my business partners
and I continue to talk about is what we
are spending a lot of time building right
(02:54):
now is because we're lazy, right? I
remember hearing the gentleman who made
the, what is it? The, the, the drink, the
one of those, you know, one of those, um,
monster drink, I think it was. And, and he
on his documentary, billions in change
that you can find on, on YouTube, he
(03:14):
talked about the fact that he created it
because he was lazy. And I just love the
idea behind that. And I was working on
some business stuff that I'm doing. I'm
coaching some new folks right now. And I,
as I, as I began to think about some of
the things that I'm doing, I went back and
said, you know what, what I want to do now
(03:34):
is still too much work. I don't even want
to work that hard. Right. Like the things
that I'm doing with them, I'm loving, but
the things that I want to do as I continue
to open myself back up to business, there
are some things that I'm like, you know
what? I don't want to do that. I don't
want to do it like that. So how do I get
myself away from this, this idea or this
(03:54):
ideology of working hard versus working
smart? Right. because it is in a lot of
respects not sustainable. You know, I
remember I think and I've talked about
this before. I believe it was Michael
Jordan that says greatness doesn't take a
day off, but I do believe greatness does
rest. My God in heaven, that might set
somebody free right there. There is
(04:16):
nothing wrong with it. And you know what?
Being able to rest sometimes is the way to
grow, is the way to hustle, is the way to
replenish your thinking. Because sometimes
you can work yourself so far that you
can't see the forest from the trees. You
are going so hard, as we like to say in my
(04:38):
culture, so hard in the paint that you
can't even see that you're just in too
deep. And sometimes it takes a fresh
approach. Sometimes it takes you literally
putting something down. Sometimes it takes
you stepping away to say, you know what,
I'm in too deep. I need to hear something
else. I need to maybe go in my prayer
(04:59):
closet. Maybe I need to just watch some TV
or go get some ice cream or just take a
walk or whatever. Stay away from it for a
day or two, which is why I believe in what
God talks about and what the Bible talked
about as far as the Sabbath. There is much
more to the Sabbath than just, well, as
the Bible talks about, you know, Sabbath
(05:21):
was made for man, not man for the Sabbath,
right? And it's much more than just not
doing. It's saying, God, you can help me
do more in those six days that I'm resting
than in the seven that I try to take
myself. You could do more in my business
by me taking time off than by me trying to
stay on and figuring it all out by myself.
(05:42):
That might set somebody free right there.
Like, if I'm the one that's grinding all
the time, where can God move within what
it is I'm doing? Do I give him time to
breathe into my business? If I am hustling
and grinding and going all the time, I am
going to suggest that maybe you are not.
(06:05):
Maybe we are not. And I'm saying this, I
can talk about this because I've been
guilty of it. I can talk about it because
I can look at all the things that I have
to do, all the things that I want to do.
And I don't give myself enough time to
replenish my thinking, replenish my
spirit, replenish my energy so that I can
(06:26):
continue to go sometimes taking a break.
is the best thing for your business to go
forward. I'm going to say that again for
the people in the back. Sometimes
literally taking a break and stepping away
is the best thing you could do to help
your business go forward. You have to know
and you have to be able to plan for it.
(06:48):
I'm literally making sure that as I talk
about this new season in business, as I
coach in this new season, that I am
talking to the folks just like you that
are listening, the folks that I'm
coaching, how are you planning for the
time off? How are you planning for the
breaks? How are you literally planning to
(07:09):
allow your time, your mind, a season to
rest? And I believe it is this, as I said
before, as I alluded to at the beginning,
this grind culture, this social media
culture that continues to have us thinking
that we have to keep going. I was looking
for something for these folks that I'm
(07:31):
coaching. And it was an ebook that I had
years ago that I had gotten from whomever
I'd gotten from. I don't even remember it.
Of course, I didn't go ahead and find it,
but I had remembered, I had found
something that was likened to what I was
looking for. And it was from a course that
I had taken a couple of years ago at the
time of this recording, almost three years
ago at the time of this recording. And it
(07:53):
was talking about how I had to post. It
was talking about, it was literally
talking about how I needed to post. And
when I, when I went back and looked, when
I started looking at that, I was like, did
this thing really just recommend that I do
all of this this way? I was like, Oh my
(08:13):
goodness. It was talking about, and I
don't have it up in front of me. So I'm
just going to paraphrase what I was
looking at. It was talking to me about.
posting at this time every single day and
then getting myself up to posting three
times a day, making sure I was doing
reels, making sure I was doing, um, you
know, short videos, making sure I was
(08:35):
going to other pages and doing that. And
the hashtags, it was like, I was like, so
the whole game was. to keep doing more and
watch this because because that was really
just about getting my followers up not
about making sales on my way to heaven
right it was about getting my followers up
because because these vanity metrics are
(08:56):
oftentimes what people tout are what they
utilize or what they want because that's
going to equal the success or that's going
to equal what it is that we need to do.
And what I thought about when I saw that
today as I was looking at it was that
posting became the job, that became the
business. And that was never intended to
(09:17):
be the business in the first place. Right.
So I want you to think about this. And for
those of you who are out there posting
that much a good luck to you. I just don't
do it. So if I'm posting three times a
day, seven days a week, right, that's 21
posts a week. Is that right? Seven day,
three times. Yeah. Three times a day is
21. That that's a lot of posting.
(09:40):
That's a lot of content. And is it wrong?
No, it's just not my testimony. And, and I
remember just thinking like, okay, this is
what I need to do to get my followers up.
And I was like, but this is going to burn
me out because this isn't what it is I
want to do. I didn't even, I don't need a
scheduler. I don't want to do a scheduler
and batch them and do all, do all those,
because I still got to create the content.
(10:02):
and don't let it be that I want to have
the words going. I have all the technology
to do that. I have all the things that I
need to upload the videos, crop them
really quickly, make the words come on,
export them, do all that, put them in the
video schedule. I have it and I'm not
going to do it because for me that's hard
work. And hard work doesn't always pay
(10:23):
off, right? It's not always good. It
doesn't always work because it wasn't for
me sustainable. I would rather do
something different, right? And for those
of you who do post a lot, I'm going to
tell you what. For those, like I've said
before, for those of you who are trying to
get your followers up via short form,
(10:44):
remember that that's what the algorithm is
supporting, that people are staying on
their platform. If you do something long
form, they're not gonna show it to as many
people, but it's the long form people that
actually, the correlation between people
who watch long form and those who actually
make a sale is drastically higher than
those who are just watching short form
videos. You can look that up for yourself.
(11:07):
Just understand what the purpose is of
what it is that you are doing. It again,
it leads to burnout. I've said that it, it
also does not equal productivity. Did you
hear me? It does not equal being
productive, right? It means that you're
busy. And sometimes I believe that this
(11:27):
was one of the things that. Was a, was an
aha for many of us in that when the
pandemic hit the world pandemic, the COVID
pandemic, right? was that people had to
stop being busy because you couldn't go
anywhere. People had to stop being busy.
They had to sit around with the people
that were basically in their houses and
(11:47):
people had to live like that and that
busyness That lack of business rather
really began to shift some things for some
people. I think that we have picked that
back up because some people don't want to
deal with, I think, themselves in a lot of
respects. I'm not going to get in that
because that's a different podcast for a
different day. But I think that what we're
doing is we're working to stay busy. And
(12:09):
really we are, that is not equaling
productivity. We are not being effective.
We're doing all this stuff, but is it
effective? Is it getting a desired result?
Is it getting a desired outcome? Now, for
example, I was just talking a second ago
about Instagram. If your desired result is
just to get your vanity metrics up,
fantastic. That works, but is it going to
(12:31):
help you increase sales? That's really the
question that you have to be asking
yourself because because it is something
more than just staying busy. Right. So
one of the things that we have to think
about is about not overcomplicating what
it is that we're doing. We don't have to
(12:51):
be on every platform. Again, I was just
talking about IG, but instead of being
busy or, or working hard to be on all
these platforms, just pick one. I believe
in the power of one. Right. Instead of
trying to design the perfect logo, going
hard in the paint to try to make sure it's
this and it has this and it does that, get
(13:13):
something simple so you can keep going.
And then watch this, we will be working on
things that don't even have anything to do
with making sales. This is the thing that
I want you to be thinking about every day.
I'm actually gonna jump to the end and
come back, is that every day, really, what
you should be doing is thinking about, how
can I connect with someone today about my
(13:35):
product or service for a potential sale.
Is is this post and I'm going to I'm going
to tell you guys one thing that doesn't
work. I'm really just going to say it
quotes. I love them. I've done them. I
probably will keep doing them at times,
but they don't make sales. They get thumbs
up, they get likes, they get shares, but
(13:57):
they don't get sales. I'm actually I'm
actually going to see if I could do some
research on that myself. They don't they
don't they don't make sales. And what we
think and what we do oftentimes is we'll
go to Canva or we go to Etsy and we'll get
some great, you know, Um, background
images and some different things and
(14:17):
colors and it matches our branding. And we
put a lot of quotes on them and put them
up there and we do it automatically. So it
doesn't hurt us, but it doesn't equate to
dollars. So then why are we doing that?
Why are we working that hard to, to make
it simple? We're working hard to go out
and get all that stuff, to put it in a
simple, to put it in a simple, like, you
know, auto scheduler. For for what?
(14:40):
Because that's not equaling the dollar
that it is that you need. Right. But but
one of the things, even though I'm saying
quotes don't work, I was just like free
information, working smart is not doing it
all yourself. I was talking to the folks
that I was coaching today and I said, have
you used AI to ask that question? They're
(15:03):
like, no. I was like, why? Like it's
smarter than us, right? Utilize it. Argue
with it. Disagree with it. Keep going back
and forth, but allow it to help you to
think through what it is you're doing.
Especially if you don't have business
savvy people or business savvy coaches to
be able to talk to and just talk to it
(15:25):
about what it is you're doing. Vetted
through something like that. And for those
of you who disagree, I'm telling you, just
going to get left behind. I said it,
you're going to have to deal with it. I'm
not taking it back. because that's what's
going to help you to work smarter. I
think that we have to begin to practice
ways to work smarter, right? And what it
(15:48):
is that we're doing. I think that in some
respects for our businesses, especially if
you're just getting started, you have to
be thinking from the beginning, how do I
work smarter with this? Because again, the
one thing that you should be doing every
single day is trying to get sales, trying
to get in front of people, trying to ask
someone to at least a call to action,
(16:09):
click on something, follow something,
watch something. read something that you
have put out, do something, perhaps join
your list, perhaps do something. But you
should always be thinking about how do I
make sales? The reality is most of us
spend a lot of our time on the on the
fringes of the things that don't actually
lead to the thing that's going to make the
(16:31):
difference, which is the sales, the money,
the money part of it. Right. We have to be
about doing that particular part. We have
to be about learning how to do things
quicker. Sometimes people want to go out
and do business by themselves, you're
going to do better. Finding the right
coach that's working smarter, allowing
(16:52):
your dollars to work for you. And as
opposed to you using solely your brain to
try to figure out what it is you need to
do. I am so excited for the folks that I'm
coaching because over the last couple of
weeks, I have watched them grow
exponentially. From the day that the very
day we started talking exponentially and
(17:14):
who their avatar is exponentially on their
messaging, exponentially on what they want
to do, exponentially on just understanding
their money and how are they going to make
money in their business. Like
exponentially because they decided to do
something other than what they were doing
and to get and to heed some good advice.
(17:35):
Right. So we are oftentimes I find that we
are afraid to go out and get a coach and
some coaches are not good. I'm one of the
first to say it. I'm not, I'm not one of
those coaches because I believe I'm
excellent at what I do. But some are not
good, but you're still paying for
information. Even when you go to trainings
that are not good, you you are still you
(17:56):
still can figure out what you don't want
to do, how you could do things
differently. So so it's just like, you
know, God doesn't waste anything. He
doesn't waste anything. And so don't even
be afraid to do that. But one of the
biggest things, again, I think we have to
do is stop working hard. Stop being what I
(18:16):
have termed professional plate spinner.
Stop picking up something more. Do less.
Do less. Your time is valuable. If people
want to get to you, then they're going to
have to pay to get to you. Yes, you might
have to start out a little bit lower or
you may have to offer a couple of
discounts as you get started. That's OK,
(18:37):
but you don't have to stay there. But you
have to figure out the quickest way for
you to not only get to the dollar and the
quickest way for you to do less. That
might set somebody free. Figure out the
fastest way for you to do less. For many
people, that's doing group work. For many
people, that's membership sites. For many
people, that's what it is. Because if
(18:58):
you're doing one-on-one, you're trading
time for dollars. And if you go down, you
there, who, where's the money coming? If
you don't have things that are done
automatically. Right now, while that may
seem like it's all over the place, it's
not because that's working smarter. If I
put in the energy, if I'm going to work
smart, I need to put in the energy to
create this DIY product so that that
(19:19):
product can make money for me all the
time. Even when I'm asleep, that shifts me
over to being a business owner. You see
what I'm saying? So we have to figure out,
okay, how do I work smarter? You can
connect with me. You can, um, ask me some
questions about how do I begin to work
smarter? Cause I love being able to answer
questions for you, but you got to figure
(19:40):
out what am I doing wrong? What, what am I
doing to not make the money that I need to
make? What, what. Is my business heading
in the right direction? I actually have a
program I'm putting together that's going
to do that's going to be about a business
audit for new entrepreneurs. And I'm
telling you, it is absolutely fantastic. I
am really, really loving it. I'm making a
(20:01):
bunch of shifts to some of the things that
I'm doing and taking the best of the best
and and making it even better. I am
really, really excited about that because
I'm telling you, from what I have seen,
the results that I'm seeing so far with
the folks that I'm coaching, it is
absolutely phenomenal. They're, matter of
fact, telling me, you got to keep this in
the program. You actually have to keep
this, like you have to do this part day
one. Right. And I'm really excited about
(20:23):
that because I believe that if you can get
a business audit, it's going to help you
to work smarter. It is literally going to
help you to work smarter because you are
thinking about things in a, in a much more
succinct way. You're doing things that are
gonna, that are going to be helping you.
to get to the bag, get to the money, to
get to your ideal customer a lot quicker.
(20:46):
And it's not always about hard work,
because I am one to tell you, I do not
believe that hard work always pays off.
That's what I have for you today. I pray
that there was something that I said that
was a blessing to your spirit. I'm telling
you that you have to rest. You have to get
to figuring out what can I do to be
(21:06):
smarter in my business as opposed to this
hard work because I don't even want to
keep this up. I don't even if I love it, I
don't want to keep this up. And I want to
encourage you to have the courage to be
able to make the pivots and the shifts
that you need so you can work smarter as
opposed to harder. I love you guys. I
(21:27):
thank you for joining me for this podcast
and I will see you in the next episode.
Hey there, before you go, I'd really
appreciate it if you hit that like or
subscribe button. Even if you decide to
download this episode and send it to one
of your sister friends or your brothers, I
would really appreciate it because that's
what's going to help this particular
podcast grow. Thank you so much. And I
(21:49):
hope to see you on the next podcast.
