I’m also a mother to a now-thriving 22-year-old neurodivergent son, and I’ve been married for over three decades. I bring both clinical knowledge and lived experience to this conversation because I’ve walked this road.
If you’re parenting a boy with ADHD, you’ve likely asked yourself, “Why is he like this?!” Maybe you’ve been told he’s disrespectful, lazy, or doesn’t listen. Maybe you’ve tried reward charts, punishments, threats, and consequences but nothing seems to stick. You’re not alone.
ADHD in boys often shows up as high energy, impulsivity, emotional outbursts, and what looks like defiance. But what’s really happening underneath is a brain that’s moving too fast, struggling with regulation, and desperately trying to keep up with a world that doesn’t always make sense to it.
