Speaker 1 (00:02):
Welcome to The Solid Verbal. Come after me!

Speaker 2 (00:06):
I'm a man, I'm 40! I've heard so many players say, well,
I want to be happy. You want to be happy
for day? Eat a steak.

Speaker 1 (00:13):
Is that woo woo!

Speaker 2 (00:14):
And Dan and Ty.

Speaker 1 (00:18):
Dan Rubenstein, it is preview season! At long last, my friend,
welcome back to the show. How are you?

Speaker 2 (00:26):
I'm great. I got to give you a warning because
today where this is the episode one of preview season
where we review all things new for the sport, for teams,
for media, for coaches, whatever, for the twenty twenty five season.
If I sound like I have some extra zip to

(00:48):
me today, I just brewed up a cup of coffee
with not a sponsor, but beans that were I don't
even know what this means, processed with watermelon, Oh coffee,
beans processed with watermelon by I think a roaster named
Methodical Coffee in Greenville, South Carolina. Not a sponsor would

(01:08):
be very specific, could be and delicious, absolutely, but wild,
absolutely bonkers on the palette and I like it. But
this is my first time and it's new to me. So,
as Gwen would say, is it's all happening on today's
show New coffee taste and new everything in college football,

(01:32):
everything called those little heart palps you're feeling right now,
deep down in the chest.

Speaker 1 (01:38):
Yeah, we're getting ready for the twenty twenty five season.
This is the first of like sixteen preview episodes that
we're going to be dropping to the feed here in.

Speaker 2 (01:47):
Just a little bit.

Speaker 1 (01:48):
This will be the only episode you hear this week,
mainly because of the July fourth holiday and nobody downloads
and July fourth. We know this from experience. But starting
next Tuesday now, we're going to be rolling through conference
by conference by conference until we get to mid August.
When we get through all the preview content, we can

(02:09):
start building I guess a little bit more properly for
the season. That is a little bit more in front
of us right now, it's still a bit off in
the distance. But this is the earliest we have ever
done our previews. We are excited to do it. You
and I had a conversation. We just came to the
point where we just couldn't wait any longer. We couldn't
wait any longer.

Speaker 2 (02:28):
So today is the.

Speaker 1 (02:29):
First of all of our preview content. Of course, overbawlers
dot com.

Speaker 2 (02:35):
V E R B A L L E

Speaker 1 (02:37):
R s dot com. That's where you can go if
you want to get episodes a little bit early without
the ads, get access to discord. Before long, we're going
to be rolling out or run the board game, as
well as some other odds and ends. You can sign
up for free if you just want to be in
the loop, durin the know for anything that is coming
down the pike. But of course we would appreciate your support.
Go and check it out at Verballers dot com, Dan Rubertstein.

Speaker 2 (02:59):
It's the most direct helpful way you can support the
show verbalers dot com and we are forever indebted and
appreciative to all who support the show. It's a great
community over on Discord. It's a great feeling to be
supported by people who seem to enjoy the show. So again,
thank you for your consideration.

Speaker 1 (03:18):
Either really enjoyed it or they're good at pretending one
way or the other. Block of set all of your support.
So look, we did an episode like this a year ago.
We did it before the twenty four season, and the
reason that we did it was because there was a
lot changing last year. Think about all of the new
stuff that went down last year with big time, power

(03:40):
conference realignment, and a playoff system, and I'm not going
to rehash all of that right now, but there was
a lot that was different before last season. So we
thought at the time this would be a good idea
just to catch people up, because you know, the drill,
summer's here, people are.

Speaker 2 (03:56):
Doing other things.

Speaker 1 (03:57):
At some point you're gonna start popping your head up
and realizing, oh, football is getting closer.

Speaker 2 (04:03):
Yep.

Speaker 1 (04:03):
We need to acquaint ourselves with what's what's different, what's changing,
and what are the high level talking points that I
should know as a college football fan. That episode, more
than any we did all throughout last season, really all
throughout last year, is the episode that people went back
to the most and downloaded most after the fact. Most

(04:24):
of what we do has like a seventy two hour
shelf life. This one didn't. This one was popular. This
one was definitely a quick reference episode that people went
back to and referred to and sent to friends. So
we thought, well, hey, if it ain't broke, just do
it again.

Speaker 2 (04:40):
If people are asking themselves what kind of melon are
Dan's coffee beans pressed with, and like, oh that's right,
good refresher, good Dan caffeine Rosetta Stone episode glad to
hear it.

Speaker 1 (04:52):
So that's where we're at here. Yes, we're not going
to be doing twenty twenty four news. We are going
to be doing twenty twenty five news. I have seventeen
pages of no in front of me, FYI, in case
you were wondering what is different, what is changing? What
are we trying to inform people of? I will spare
you any more preamble, and I think we should just

(05:13):
dive right into this thing. Can you give me a
little bit more Gwen though, please?

Speaker 2 (05:16):
Or never? By the way, underrated No Doubt album, Return
of Saturn. I want to say some good ones on there,
ty some good ones. Just one more win, just another
one more listen, thank you sultry. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (05:32):
So the first question is when does the season start? Okay,
great question, don't want a gloss over the obvious, but
the season starts Week zero starts officially on August twenty,
third month and a half or so from now, at
noon Eastern time. They are playing the Pharmageddon Game this
year in Dublin, Ireland, over at Aviva Stadium.

Speaker 2 (05:54):
To open the season instead of playing it Rivalry week ish.

Speaker 1 (05:57):
Yeah, correct, Kansas State versus Iowa State. It's going to
be the first game of the season. There are three
other games on August the twenty third. We got Fresno
at Kansas, which is interesting, may not be as high
profile as a rivalry game, but we've obviously got a
new coach on the Fresno side, Matt Enz. We'll get
to that on one of our upcoming episodes. But it's

(06:18):
going to be like the grand reopening of Kansas Stadium,
which has been under renovation now for a while. So
there's that. We've also got Sam Houston against Western Kentucky
and Stanford at Hawaii. But the big one, the big
one is k State against Iowa State. If any of
our Irish rebawlers out there are going to be at
the game, or if our any you know, k State

(06:39):
or Iowa State fans are planning to make the trip over,
we would encourage you to give us a holler, let
us know what that experience is like. But in case
you're wondering when is this all starting up, it's starting
up here on August the twenty third, week zero. That
is your week zero, So why don't we start here?
Twenty twenty five is not twenty twenty four. It's got
its own comple of new things, but it is different,

(07:02):
I think in a couple key ways. And you and
I talked a little bit about this off air. But
for as unfamiliar as a lot of what we saw
at the start of last season felt, I think to
some extent, the opposite is true in twenty twenty five.
There's a lot of familiarity to hang your hat on.
Maybe just because we know the system better now, and

(07:23):
we know the conferences better now, and you know, we're
just used to some of these things that felt different
or so different a year ago, it's a little bit
more comforting I think headed into twenty twenty five. That
being said, it's not without its own set of new things. Right,
We've got totally a bunch of new quarterbacks in big places,

(07:45):
either names that we had come to know last year
just because we followed depth charts, or new names entirely,
like Bryce Underwood at Michigan. Right, that's clearly going to
be a guy who has an impact on that program.
But am I alone in just I don't know, searching
my feelings and feeling like, all right, maybe there's a
little bit more here that we are used to that

(08:06):
doesn't feel as foreign as say, a year ago.

Speaker 2 (08:10):
Yeah, it's sort of what's new is old. That's the
new thing about twenty twenty five is that it feels
less new than it did last year. If that makes
any sense, that's maybe strained logic a little bit.

Speaker 1 (08:22):
No, I think it does. I feel the same thing, man,
I really do.

Speaker 2 (08:26):
So, Okay, here's where we are. Your team's right. Penn
State is returning a ton it's the same coach, it's
a new defensive coordinator, but it's the same offensive coordinator,
the same quarterback, a lot of familiar faces. Notre Dame
has an internal quarterback who is going to be starting
in CJ. Carr, And even though they have a new
defensive coordinator, Notre Dame feels very familiar. My team, we

(08:47):
can say the same thing. It's our show, so we'll
start with our teams a little bit, right. Dante Moore committed,
Dante mor transferred last year. He's been around, Dan Lannings around,
The coordinators are still around, Like there's a lot of
familiarity there with Oregon. But then you look across the sport,
like you look up and down the West Coast, it's
same quarterbacks at Washington and USC. You look across, you
know Texas. Arch Manning has been there for now three years,

(09:10):
and it's what's new is that he's starting. But like
Sark has been around, like Gunner, Stockton is a familiar
face because of how it things ended at Georgia. Right,
that there's so much of there's so much more continuity.
It feels among a lot of major programs at least
that that continuity. Like it's now the second year of
the twelve team playoff, Like we're more familiar with how

(09:32):
the portal does and doesn't work, and nil doesn't doesn't work,
although there are new elements to that as well. So
like in that way, I think you're right. I hope
we're right that what's new is things feel familiar.

Speaker 1 (09:48):
Things feel familiar even if they are new or old
names and new places. Sure still simply so, Like Carson
Beck is a really good example of this. M Carson
Beck's can be at Miami. So that's new, But Carson
Beck isn't a new entity in college football. Arch Manning.
Arch Manning and his starting era beginning at Texas might

(10:12):
be the biggest story in college football going into twenty
twenty five. But everybody knows arch Manning. We got to
see him a little bit last year. I haven't seen
enough of him yet to really grade him out, but
you kind of know what you're getting there. It really
runs the gamut from names like arch Manning and Carson
Beck to Fernando Mendoza at Indiana, transferring in from cal

(10:36):
to Jackson Arnold at Auburn, transferring in from Oklahoma to
nico Iamaliava transferring to UCLA from Tennessee, all the way
down like Bo Prabula at Missou. You've got a bunch
of quarterbacks and this is because of the transfer.

Speaker 2 (10:53):
Portal Bo Prabula Penn State to Missoo.

Speaker 1 (10:55):
Yeah, a bunch of quarterbacks who are going to be
in new spots. And you mentioned guys like Gunner Stockton
who will be stepping into a role Julian saying. Another
one who will be stepping into likely at starting role
at Ohio State CJ.

Speaker 2 (11:09):
Carr.

Speaker 1 (11:10):
Alabama's got some new names that we'll have to get
acquainted with here as we go through preview season. These
are names that I think a lot of college football
fans are accustomed to, but maybe not fully briefed yet
on where they're going to be playing, and as we
get into our team previews, we can talk a little
bit more about what's to be expected there. To that point, yeah,

(11:30):
it's not a quarterback. You got a guy by the
name of Bill Belichick. Ever heard of him?

Speaker 2 (11:34):
Yes, we do. Familiar name, new place.

Speaker 1 (11:38):
Now, if you follow college football at all over the
last eight months, you know that Bill Belichick's been a
little bit in the news for seemingly some of the
wrong reasons. But Bill Belichick taking over North Carolina, Lady friend,
relatively new to this world. Yeah, new to this world. Yeah,
Bill Belichick taking over. And then to your other point, Yeah,
there are some I think familiar questions about teams that frankly,

(12:04):
have been in the news a lot over the last
decade or so. Team like a Georgia in Georgia rebound.
What does it look like for Georgia right this season?
We spent a great chunk of last season talking about
is the competition catching up to Georgia?

Speaker 2 (12:23):
Yeah? Something broken with Georgia's offense?

Speaker 1 (12:25):
Yeah, still beat Texas twice, but yep, what's broken with Georgia?
Can they fix it? Can they in Georgia rebound? I'm
gonna ask the same question. I think about Clemson this year.
It maybe has a little bit of a different feel
given the way that Clemson went out last season, But
it seems as if the stars are aligned for Clemson

(12:45):
maybe to jump back into this race and be more
of a title threat than we thought at the beginning
of last season. There's a lot of good reason to
be excited about the Clemson Tigers, Penn State, Penn State.
We're used to talking about Penn State. After the last
two seasons. The Penn State feels like this year would
be the year, and a lot of folks are really

(13:07):
high on the Nitdney Lions. Where are we at with
Penn State? What does that national championship window look like?
I'll give you one again. More teams were used to
talking about how about the whole friggin state of Florida. Sure,
how about the Florida Gators, the Florida State Seminoles, the
Miami Hurricanes, three of the big schools in Florida, all

(13:28):
of which have really big questions about the hot seat
situation for Billy Napier and I guess, Mike Norvell, I mean,
it's fair to ask that after a three and nine
season Miami getting a new quarterback, but I think more
significantly a new defensive coordinator from Minnesota, which maybe we
can talk through here. These are all the types of
questions that I think are going to be the main

(13:49):
storylines coming into the season, and frankly, none of them
are out of left field. These are all things that
we saw coming at the end of last season. So
in that sense, I guess we're kind of picking up
where we left them.

Speaker 2 (14:00):
Yeah, I mean, on that same token and continuing with
the like, what's old is new? Rich Rodriguez head coach
the West Virginia University, how about Scott Frost new coach
UCF speaking of the state of Florida, new old coach?
What's new as old, what's old is new? Blah blah blah.
And I guess to extrapolate that further is what's new

(14:24):
is major programs or semi major programs are not making
huge coaching changes seemingly as often as they used to
because I think a lot of boosters would rather spend
their money elsewhere, specifically players on the field, than paying
coaches not to coach. And so with the major coaching

(14:48):
changes I think being limited to West Virginia UCF, North
Carolina of course with Mac Brown to Bill Belichick, Wake Forest,
and what Purdue with Barry Odom. Yeah, we had six six.

Speaker 1 (15:00):
Five programs making a coaching change in some regard if
you want to account Stanford in there because of their
interim situation. Six but no, there wasn't that much activity,
at least on the Power five level with respect to
coaching changes. And you do have to wonder how does
it tie into the I guess bigger picture within college
football with how money is going to be moving differently,

(15:23):
we'll talk about that transfer portal, denil the need to
maybe reinvest in a program the way Florida has and
keeping billion apier around but investing more heavily. Sam Pittman, Markansas,
Sam Pittman, Right, So it definitely has altered the calculation,
I think a little bit. We probably won't know for
a couple of years how much.

Speaker 2 (15:43):
Here's here's my question. Here's the first sidebar of the episode,
solid verbal style guide question. Are we going power five
or power four? I know the PAC twelve is sort
of I thought that I say power five, You've said
power five a couple of times. That's I think muscle memory.
But it's a actually interesting question. Like I I can't
consider Power five until we actually see what the new

(16:06):
look back twelve looks like next year. That's definitely sort
of new, new, new, because they just announced I think
a TV deal with like the CBS spe of Networks, Yeah, CBS,
but I think it's Power four for NOWO plus Power
four and a half. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (16:21):
Okay, So let's start here, Dan, We're gonna build into
some of those talking points, but here are some of
the new things that I think our audience needs to know.
You may have read a lot over the last couple
months about revenue sharing. I'm pausing here because anytime you
mentioned that, anytime you start talking about the college football

(16:42):
business stuff, people's ears and eyes and brains glaze over.

Speaker 2 (16:47):
Yeah, and also processed with watermelon.

Speaker 1 (16:49):
Yeah, enough of this already. May have heard of the
House settlement. The House Settlement is now resolved. This paves
the way for schools to share up to about twenty
and a half million dollars with student athletes. Most of
that goes to football football generate. It's like eighty percent
of the revenue. Most of that's going to go to
football players. Twenty and a half million dollars is at

(17:10):
least the initial cap that schools can I emphasize, can
share with student athletes if they want to. You're not
required to participate, obviously, if you do, that puts you,
I think, at something of a competitive advantage versus those
who don't. Right, there is definitely a larger conversation here
about how that widens the gap between the haves and
the have nots. But notably, this is also separate from nil. Right,

(17:37):
is not the same thing. And I think it's really
easy to lump those two together because it's all you know,
it's all funny money, right, right.

Speaker 2 (17:44):
That schools weren't on the hook before to pay a
percentage of their television revenue up and up to twenty
and a half million dollars. But now it's an and
not an ore or instead of yeah.

Speaker 1 (17:57):
That's right. So these are separate entities. Do your best
not to confuse the two of them. We now have
revenue sharing in college football. It is going to be
governed by the way, as we discussed on our episode
last week with Ralph Russo, by something called the College
Sports Commission. It was set up as a separate, independent entity.

(18:18):
It's going to oversee annual revenue sharing caps and roster
limits and third party nil stuff.

Speaker 2 (18:26):
It is seemingly taking over that chunk.

Speaker 1 (18:29):
Of the enforcement duties from the NCAA, which is a
whole other ballas that we're not going to expand upon
too much in this episode. This is an intro to
the season, not a deep dive of revenue sharing, correct,
but just something to keep your eye on. Okay, that's
the first big change I think structurally speaking to college
football that people should just be aware of.

Speaker 2 (18:47):
And it's also interesting because certain schools, and we're not
going to be labor this obviously, they have financial responsibilities
to other sports and some schools are just like football, football, football,
and some schools have national championship aspirations, you know, with
their men's or women's basketball teams, or their baseball teams

(19:08):
or you know, any any specific sports that are you know,
revenue generating on some level, and they're competing with like
Texas Tech and softball. Right that they were super aggressive
in the portal like that. There are situations where you're
just like, yeah, maybe we're not going to spend as
much on football and we'll lean on the collective a
little bit more and so yeah, it's fascinating to see
how different schools are going to a lot different amounts

(19:30):
of money. Even though we do know football is going
to it's going to command the biggest, biggest chunk of it.

Speaker 1 (19:37):
Second, big change, Yes, playoff seating. They're using a straight
seating model. One year was enough of the old, in
with the new.

Speaker 2 (19:48):
Mess with Oregon once. Yeah, you mess with the bull,
you get the horns. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (19:53):
The way this is going to work, the top four
teams in the final rankings, regardless of whether or not
they won their conference championship. Those top four teams are
going to get first round bys. Remember the way it
worked last year, you had to win your conference in
order to buy That's how Arizona stake at the bye
this year. Doing away with it, it also means Notre Dame

(20:14):
could get a first round by, which they couldn't before,
So that, I guess is different if you're a Notre
Dame fan, something that I've been paying attention to. But
hopefully this makes the system a little bit easier to
understand before they change the whole damn thing up again
next year in a whole likelihood. Right, So again, pay
attention to the final rankings. Top four teams now are
the ones that get the buys. Okay, clear, good, we

(20:35):
are clear. Seems reasonable. We've got two new teams entering
college football, as if we didn't already have enough, we
have one hundred and thirty six now.

Speaker 2 (20:46):
Two teams entering FBS college football. To be clear, not
just college football as a whole. They're not starting new
teams at the call at the FBS level.

Speaker 1 (20:55):
Two teams that are joining Conference USA from the FCS ranks. Yes,
one is Delaware, Go Blue Hens. Of course they're joining
from the Coastal Athletic Association at CIA. We've also got
Missouri State joining Conference USA from the Missouri Valley Conference
m H. The only other bit of I guess meaningful

(21:16):
confentory alignment news as it relates to this season. There
is talk going on around what next season looks like
the PAC twelve and stuff. I can reference that here
in a moment. But the only other big one is
that U Mass is now going to be a full
member of the MAC.

Speaker 2 (21:32):
SO.

Speaker 1 (21:33):
I may recall that U Mass made the jump to FBS.
I believe the twenty twelve season was their first they
were a football only member of the MAC. They ended
up going and dependent a couple of years after that
in like twenty sixteen, but now starting in this year,
full member all sports joining the MAC.

Speaker 2 (21:52):
Okay, Okay.

Speaker 1 (21:55):
This is also going to be the final year for
a couple programs in their current conference just because of
this PAC twelve resurgence.

Speaker 2 (22:03):
And reactions reverberations thereof yeah continue.

Speaker 1 (22:08):
At time of recording, we've got Boise State, Colorado State,
Fresno State, San Diego State, Utah State all jumping over
to the PAC twelve. That's five teams yes, next season
correct Okay. As a result, we've also got some more
of that Chaine reaction business where NIU is going to
join the Mountain West UTEP is going to join the

(22:29):
Mountain West Northern Illinois leaving the MAC UTEP leaving Conference USA.
My hunch is that there will be more news on
this front as the PAC twelve is now secured meteorites
and as they're trying to reconstitute the conference.

Speaker 2 (22:42):
But at time of recording, that's what we got for you,
and I believe you can correct me if I'm wrong here.
As a result of this, Gonzaga basketball is joining the
PAC twelve next year as well, which just terms of
college sports, that's enormous, huge, So yeah, don't hate that.

Speaker 1 (22:59):
No, there we'll be more dominos to fall in that front.
We're recording this on June twenty third. There's a pretty
good chance that stuff's going to come out after this.
So we'll touch base with that a little bit later
on a few other things, just in terms of context.
All right, you can speed run all this stuff if
you want to. We'll try to talk our way through

(23:20):
it as best we can. They're getting rid of your
landing loopholeed in what that's a whole twelve minute on
the field things. So the way the new rule is
going to be worked written now, excuse me, the way
it's going to work after the two minute timeout in
either half, if the defense commits a foul having twelve
or more guys on the field and all the players

(23:41):
participate in the play, the officials are going to give
a five yeard penalty. The offensive team's going to have
the option to reset the game clock back to who
it was the start of the play. If the twelfth
player tries to leave the field but does an influence
the play, the defensive team is going to be penalized
five yards with Doajoz. They're doing away with the landing loophole,

(24:01):
the one that we saw when Oregon played Ohio State
when they got the ten second runoff.

Speaker 2 (24:07):
What other loopholes or not loopholes, but what other rule
changes stood out to you. I guess I'm fine with
it right that Dan Lanning was able to utilize it effectively,
and the College Football Rules Committee decided that it was
against the spirit of college football and they wanted to
tighten up that rule. And what will happen now is

(24:27):
not just Dan Lanning, but every single coach and every
single staff will try to figure out and squeeze blood
out of every rule rock to find new loopholes until
those are closed, and as they should. That's, you know,
it's gamesmanship. There are.

Speaker 1 (24:45):
Four and a half rule modifications that I will talk
through quickly that jumped out to me. Okay, injury timeouts.
Everyone's moaning about fake injuries now, right. If a player
is injured after the ball is spotted for the next
their team gets charge of timeout, and if they're out
of timeouts, then it's a five yard delay of game penalty.

(25:06):
So they're trying to curb fake injuries.

Speaker 2 (25:07):
Mm hmm.

Speaker 1 (25:09):
Overtimes it's minor now, starting with a third overtime period,
each team only has one time out for the remainder
of the game. Before I think you had one per
overtime period.

Speaker 2 (25:20):
The Kirby rule. Kirby was running onto the fields in
the Georgia Tech game. You know, he would see how
Georgia Tech would align and then call a timeout. Kickoffs,
you know how guys kind of hold out the tee.

Speaker 1 (25:31):
Mm hmm. Now if you hold out the tee, that's
fair catch.

Speaker 2 (25:35):
Okay. Any r movement that isn't necessarily catch related is
now being looked at closer.

Speaker 1 (25:41):
It says if any player on a kickoff return makes
a T signal with his arms during the kick, they
give up the right to make a return and the
play will be whistled dead. Basically a fair catch. And
then my favorite one here Dan replay announcements. Okay, I
suppose this has roots in the your two minute timeout

(26:01):
thing from a year ago where they couldn't call it
a two minute warning. I still don't really understand the
logic behind that, But okay, this year, when officials come
out there and make a decision on instant replay, the
referee is only going to say that the call in
the field is quote upheld or overturned. They will no

(26:23):
longer be using the words confirmed or saying that the
call stands okay, as they have in past. Again, I
don't really know who's making these rules or why they're
doing it. I'm guessing maybe when we talk to Gene's territory,
he can give us some insight as to why they
might want to do this.

Speaker 2 (26:41):
It sounds like they want to be as supportive as
possible of the officials on the field, as I guess.

Speaker 1 (26:50):
I guess either way, they will be using different verbiage
this year. There are other rules we won't go through,
punt formations and simulation rules and all sorts of stuff
like this. We're also not an FCS show, but I
saw that they will now optionally have helmet to helmet
communication if it's something that they want to do, keep
track of FCS levels. Be curious to know if that

(27:13):
has any real impact. I can't imagine it wouldn't. Okay,
but yeah, we've got a couple rule tweaks here that
I think are relevant for the audience.

Speaker 2 (27:21):
Definitely, Although we didn't really consider the twelfth Man thing
until somebody considered it.

Speaker 1 (27:26):
And so here we are, here, we are all right. Now,
let's talk about coaches. Let's so much of the sport
is driven by coaches. The big name was Bill Belichick.
Bill Belichick got his own emergency episode here on the show, rightfully.
So he's a big name, perhaps the greatest coach of

(27:47):
all time at the NFL level. How he fares at
the college ranks UNC, all the stuff surrounding him at
UNC that remains me seen with Bill Belichick. Bill Belichick
going to be taken over at UNC.

Speaker 2 (28:05):
And also starts with TCU in the same way that
Deon Sanders, that Colorado did, right North Carolina does.

Speaker 1 (28:10):
Yeah, Rich Rodriguez previously with Jacksonville State, yep, taking over
for Neil Brown. Neil Brown is I think a special
assistant at Texas now. But Rich rod coming back to
West Virginia. Scott Frost coming back to UCF Hmm, what's
new is old? Right? Yes? Melzon leaves to be offensive

(28:30):
coordinator at Florida State. Scott Frost is back, baby, He's
back elsewhere at the Power four level.

Speaker 2 (28:39):
There it is, there, it is.

Speaker 1 (28:41):
Barry Odom comes to Purdue from UNLV. Ryan Walters was
let go. I think he's what DC now at Washington.

Speaker 2 (28:48):
YEP for the Washington Husky is replacing Bill Belichick's son,
Steve Belichick. That's right, it's right.

Speaker 1 (28:54):
Ryan Walter's good defensive coordinator. We believe so didn't quite
work out as a head coach, but glad to see
he landed on a seat Burriod to moving over from
un l V. We've also got Jake Dickard coming all
the way to the East Coast to take over at
wake Forest. So Dave Claws and retired Jake Dickard previously

(29:15):
at Wazoo. Besides, he wants to take over at wake Forest.
And this was one that sort of happened in the
last couple of months. But Troy Taylor fired by I
guess GM Andrew Luck. Seems as if Andrew Luck has
a lot of power within that Stanford program. He has
turned the keys over temporarily on an interim basis to

(29:35):
Frank Reich.

Speaker 2 (29:37):
His former head coach with the Colts. Yeah, former head
coach of the Coats. Yeah. By the way, similar situation
in cal Justin Wilcox now reporting to former NFL head
coach just you know, tying together the NFL person at
a Bay Area program reporting to Ron Rivera. Yes, that's right,
justin Wilcox. That's their new power structure at both Stanford

(29:58):
and Cal and TBD across this great land.

Speaker 1 (30:02):
A few other notable coaching changes. Okay, Dan Mullen is back.

Speaker 2 (30:09):
Yes.

Speaker 1 (30:10):
When I write these little coaching blurbs up here on
my note sheet, I tend to put in parentheses where
the coach was at previously, so we have a full
chain of events here for Dan Mullen. I have previously
with ESPN. Clearly, Dan Mullen has been other places as well,
most recently Florida, but it's been with ESPN for a
couple of years. He steps into that role at UNLV.

(30:31):
I think you and I are both fascinated by that.
We've got a new coach at app State, Dal Loggins,
previously the offensive coordinator for South Carolina Sean Clark let
go now the offensive line coach down at UCF. But
that app State situation is going to be really interesting.

(30:52):
There's a lot new, a lot new at app State
that I've been reading about.

Speaker 2 (30:56):
Matt Ants.

Speaker 1 (30:57):
I mentioned Matt Ants earlier, but Matt Ant's previously a
two time national champ at North Dakota State has been
at USC helping coach up the defense he is stepping
in for. I guess Tim Skipper, who was an interim
for Jeff Hedford after Jeff Heedford retired before the start
of last.

Speaker 2 (31:17):
Year, and who took matt ENS's job at USC. I
believe Rob Ryan, Rob Ryan Baby, great head of hair,
great head of hair, notable Ryan brother and son at USC.
Also should mention, just in terms of the West Coast
Ish coaching changes, who is Dan Mullen's probable first starting

(31:37):
quarterback at UNLV Believe Alex Orgy, Alex Org Michigan or
Anthony Calandria or Anthony Calandra coming over from Virginia. We
will talk about that here in just a little bit
there a bunch of cook but you we're both a
bunch of other coaching changes to talk about.

Speaker 1 (31:54):
I'm not going to go through all of these. We're
trying to keep this higher level. We will be getting
into all of these teams in a little bit more
detail here over the next fifteen episodes.

Speaker 2 (32:04):
Let me ask you this, of all of the new
coaching changes, if you had to pick one of the
new coaches to line up as a halfback and burst
through a line and run over a thousand people. Which
of the new coaches would you choose in that scenario.
I'll go with the first overall pick in this draft,

(32:25):
and I'll take Eddie George. Yeah, you go next. And
I'm sure whoever you pick is going to do as
good a job as Eddie George with that very specific task.

Speaker 1 (32:33):
I was gonna say Charles Houff, but probably not as good.
I'm gon Lady George still Gladdy George. Yeah, Charles Hoff
taking over at Southern Miss Tony Gibson taking over at
Marshall after Charles Hoff left Marshall. We've got Tim Albin
at Charlotte. He had a good run at Ohio but
moved down to Charlotte.

Speaker 2 (32:51):
Charlotte's tough, Yeah.

Speaker 1 (32:52):
Fau Zach Kittley previously was with Texas Tech as an
offensive coordinator. Has seen a nice rise through the ranks.
But Zach le very tall man. He is very tall,
going to be stepping in for the Owls as they
are moving on from Tom Herman and Bronco. Manden Hall's
back with Utah State was at I should say back

(33:13):
in the State of Utah. Yeah, Bronco Menden Hall was
with New Mexico last season. It makes too much sense
for Bronclemendon Hall and for Utah State, we had some
big coordinator moves, didn't we.

Speaker 2 (33:24):
Yeah. Fascinating coordinating year, fascinating coordinating. Yeah, that works. That's English.

Speaker 1 (33:28):
Four programs in particular that I think are really interesting.
We're going to talk more about him. Ohio State with
two new coordinators, same deal for Florida State, Oklahoma State,
Nebraska got a bunch of other big names where it
was just one or the other by Ohio State giving
it to Brian Hartline and Matt Patricia offensive indece sure,

(33:49):
that's choice.

Speaker 2 (33:50):
Brian Hartline long time, and I mean to say he's
the best receivers coach and recruiter in college football is
not a crazy thing to say, given where the receivers events.
So he finally with I'm sure Ryan Day's input is
the guy at coordinator.

Speaker 1 (34:06):
The Matt Patricia hire is a little weird to me.
I don't know if I fully get that one, but
they needed a guy after Jim Knowles decided to go
to Penn State, and so it's gonna be Matt Patricia.

Speaker 2 (34:17):
It's Jim Knowles the highest paid coordinator ever in the sport.
It is certainly this year, right this year, like three
million in that Ted Dance in money is what Jim
Knowles is going to be making in and that can
go a good amount of distance in State College BA.

Speaker 1 (34:32):
Florida State's bringing over Gus Melson. Yes, Gus Melson. He
is going to be tasked with rebooting that Florida State offense.
I saw that Thomas Castellanos gave some comments to our
friend Pete Nacos from over at on three that he
just doesn't think that Alabama has what it takes to

(34:53):
stop him. I saw that got some fighting words coming
out of Tallaha.

Speaker 2 (34:57):
It was something, yeah, something like can't hide hid Nick
Saban anymore, can't hide behind Nick.

Speaker 1 (35:04):
We'll see what Malzon can do with him. He's not
not a Malason style quarterback, but uh, that might be
a bridge too far from me.

Speaker 2 (35:12):
By the way, I like the defensive coordinator too. Tony
White is three three five Yeah, Rocky Longtree.

Speaker 1 (35:18):
Tony White coming over from Nebraska mm hmm Oklahoma State Dan.
So they re up with Mike Gundy. We had a
bit of a Rigamar role before he eventually signed a contract,
took pay cut stay there. He is bringing two new coordinators,
Doug Meachum. Doug Meacham was the interior wide receiver coach

(35:39):
for TCU. It's been there since twenty twenty.

Speaker 2 (35:42):
When did we not talk about the slot situation at
TCU last year? I mean, it's all anybody talking notable
and on the defensive side it's Todd Grantham. Baby, great, cool, God.
I wonder how this story is gonna end. I'm on
the edge of my seat. Who's to say? Continue over?

Speaker 1 (36:03):
At Nebraska, they're sticking with Hulgo on offense. Daniel Holgerson,
he got got his feet wet a little bit last year, coach.

Speaker 2 (36:10):
I think this is super smart. I think this is
a great move from Nebraska. I don't think they have
the talent yet to match up with different places Holgo
has been. That's not a take at all, but in
terms of rethinking your identity on offense, Nebraska needed it,
and so starting out with the talent they have a quarterback.
This instantly makes Nebraska more watchable to me.

Speaker 1 (36:31):
Yeah, and I like what Nebraska did on defense too, honestly.

Speaker 2 (36:35):
Yeah, kept things going.

Speaker 1 (36:36):
Promoted John Butler from secondary coach. I don't hate this
John Butler, I think a Philly guy.

Speaker 2 (36:43):
And what Jim Knowles too? Right? Yeah, yeah, Okay, all
comes back to pa.

Speaker 1 (36:48):
Of these offensive coordinator hires, which one is of most
interest to you? Ben R. Buckle at Oklahoma coming down
from Wazoo along with John Mattier, Ryan I guess joining
forces again with Caitlin de Borr Okay, Jason Beck stepping

(37:08):
in as offensive coordinator for Utah and Jeff Grimes previously
was the offensive coordinator at Kansas as well as Baylor
and BYU, but he is now up at Wisconsin taking
over for long ago.

Speaker 2 (37:20):
Uh. Probably our Buckle because of who he's paired with,
the familiarity has with John Mattier also coming in, and
familiarity and the desperation for consistent, interesting, fun productive offense
in Norman. I'm intrigued by Ryan Grubb, but I don't
really have a handle yet, as nobody does on what

(37:41):
the quarterback situation is going to be. We know the
certain pieces in on Alabama's offense are going to be
quite strong, you know, having a starting point of Ryan Grubb,
whoever that quarterback is going to be, and Ryan Williams. Great,
But yeah, I think from a pure narrative situation, Oklahoma
swinging both with the transfers on offense and with our buckle,
I think is the most intriguing.

Speaker 1 (38:02):
Yeah, and this is a make or break yere on
some level for totally Brent Vanna Bols he had to
take a swing. He is taking a pretty big swing.
They are doing whatever they can to try and reboot
this offense. And look, I think it's smart if're gonna
go out and get John Matier, get his offensive coordinator
as well.

Speaker 2 (38:17):
Yeah. If I purely just said I'm going to tell
you right now, I'm back from the future and Oklahoma
has a really good offense in twenty twenty five, you're like, oh, okay,
they're in the playoffs. Great.

Speaker 1 (38:26):
On the defensive side, of course, there are more moves
than the ones we're listing here, but some of the
higher profile ones. Tom Allen left Penn State went down
to Clemson. Penn State filled that with Jim Knowles, who
you mentioned earlier, getting paid.

Speaker 2 (38:40):
A ton of money.

Speaker 1 (38:42):
A PA guy talked about how he wanted to play
at Penn State, wasn't good enough to play at Penn State,
but now he's getting his shot to be involved at
the Penn State football program. He's excited.

Speaker 2 (38:51):
He's like looking in a mirror for you, PA, guy
making a ton of money. Ye, Penn State. It's all there.

Speaker 1 (38:58):
He's makking more money than me. But fair point. Uh,
Miami bringing down Corey Heatherman from Minnesota. This is a
big move. This is a really big move. Miami needs
to get better on defense. Maybe he can be the
guy and Notre Dame bringing in Chris Ash.

Speaker 2 (39:14):
Yeah, sometime Texas, Ohio State some NFL time. Rutgers.

Speaker 1 (39:20):
Very strong hairline, maybe the strongest hairline we've seen as
a Notre Dame defensive coordinator since Bob Diaco. That's a
tough one to match, though, you know, I don't say
that lightly.

Speaker 2 (39:29):
I know you do. That's hallowed ground.

Speaker 1 (39:32):
I hope the defense is as stout as that hairline.
But I remain unconvinced. I am not super excited about
this higher. But his starting point is great in terms
of the talent on hand, Yes, the starting point is great.
Mike Mickens is still there, my guy on on the
defensive coaching staff as well, who's been recruiting Marcus Freeman
still there, Marcus Freeman is still there, So there are

(39:53):
good pieces in place. Notre Dame has a ton of
steam on them coming into the twenty twenty five season.
I think the outside of the Jim Knowles move for me,
which obviously I'm very interested in giving my allegiances. Yeah,
the Corey Heatherman move to me is really interesting at
Miami because definitely I liked him at Minnesota and we

(40:13):
just know how big of a glaring weakness that Miami
defense was down the stretch. So they need a lot
of This season frankly, will be determined by whether or
not Heatherman and the defense can step up in a
really meaningful way and prevent against some of what we
saw last year down the stretch for the Canes.

Speaker 2 (40:30):
Yeah, and a lot of it seems to be And
we talked to Many Navarro about this a few weeks
ago when we did our Miami episode. Go check it
out if you haven't yet and you're interested in Miami.
It's alignment, it's tackling, it's instilling confidence in the defense
that they know the scheme, they know how to react
to what they see, and a lot of that is
happening off season. It's happening in classrooms. It's a teaching thing,

(40:51):
and there's a lot it seems like there's a lot
of faith in Corey Heatherman to be that teacher to
get Miami to consistently competent.

Speaker 1 (40:58):
Let's go through some of the notable transfers that jump
out to you. Oh my god, this is parts two
and three of this episode. We're not gonna list them
all off. There were over a thousand, no, but this
is a catch up time. Yeah, student athletes in the portal. Clearly, Clearly,
the quarterbacks are going to suck up most of the
oxygen in this room. It's just the way it works.

(41:20):
We've already referenced some of these guys, and who knows
what kind of impact they're going to have in their
new situation. Maliava, we talked about him going to UCLA.
Carson Beck from Georgia to Miami. Carson Beck briefly, I think,
declared for the NFL, decided Okay, maybe not, let's go
to Miami instead. He's gonna end up at Miami. Joh

(41:41):
Matier going from Wazoo to Oklahoma. I think that's the
name that most people have been fixated on as potentially
the biggest impact player on a new program, Nico being
what he is, Carson Beck being what he is, a
bunch of these other guys being what they are. John Matier, though,
steps into a situation where he can really influenced that
offense in a big way, So I'm excited to see

(42:03):
what he looks like in Crimson. Fernando Mendoz I mentioned him.
I'm crazy about Fernando Mendoza.

Speaker 2 (42:09):
He's gott an NFL buzz already as one of the
top qbs potentially to watch as a first round type
quarterback in twenty twenty six.

Speaker 1 (42:17):
He is better than Curtis Rourke and he is now
playing for Kurt Signetti in Bloomington for Indiana. He is
a name that I'm very very interested in watching out there.

Speaker 2 (42:28):
And by the way, Mendoza will talk about this on
the Big Ten episodes. But like he won't need to
run an offense that needs to do anything because of
a faulty defense like the last couple of years O
cal No their offense had to do. He needs to
be pretty good and Indiana will be good.

Speaker 1 (42:43):
Uh. Miller Moss left USC is going to be playing
at Louisville.

Speaker 2 (42:47):
I mentioned.

Speaker 1 (42:47):
Bo Pribulah going to be at Missoo leaving Penn State,
Jackson Arnold leaving Oklahoma going to Auburn. That's a really
cool situation. Bicy Caden Salter, remember him from Liberty going
to Colorado. Thomas Castellanos who I mentioned before, going to
Florida State, obviously at Florida State.

Speaker 2 (43:04):
Six foot ten, ten stories high if he's a foot yeah,
Ty may have overshot his height by a solid foot
last year.

Speaker 1 (43:12):
Solid It was at least a fIF wasn't it.

Speaker 2 (43:14):
Yeah, it was bad. Yeah, that's okay.

Speaker 1 (43:17):
Matt Sluca is going to JMU to play with his
former coach Bob Chesney. Geo Lopez is going to be
playing quarterback for Bill Belichick at North Carolina. He comes
over from South Alabama.

Speaker 2 (43:31):
Or at least competing for that job.

Speaker 1 (43:32):
Competing for that job.

Speaker 2 (43:33):
Seems like it's an open job at the moment.

Speaker 1 (43:35):
Yeah. Steve Angelli, I don't know if the ACC is
ready for Angelly going to be presumably the starting quarterback
at Syracuse.

Speaker 2 (43:44):
That was a post spring transfer too. That was a
Syracuse looked at other transfers, saw what they had during
spring football.

Speaker 1 (43:52):
And said the search continue. Yeah, two other ones real quick.
I mean we mentioned inn Anthony Calandry and Aloe Orgia.
I think that's just a point of personal interest for
you and I Darian Mensa got money. He got some
real money to go from too Lane to Duke. And
I'm real curious to see what Mark Gronowski looks like

(44:14):
at Iowa comes over from South Dakota State. South Dakota
State obviously a bit of an FCS powerhouse. We did
talk recently Scott doctor Man about other subjects, but he
mentioned who knows what I was going to look like
if Mark Gronowski is.

Speaker 2 (44:29):
Any good true, So we'll see. Can't wait.

Speaker 1 (44:32):
There are a bunch of other ones here. I can't
list them all off. People's eyes again will glaze over,
their ears will glaze over. But of the other names
here that we've got listed on our sheet, running backs,
wide receivers, we've got some defense on here. Of these
other names, which do you think are of most interest
to you?

Speaker 2 (44:50):
So the receiver transfers are super fascinating. Eric Singleton gives
Auburn pop alongside cam Coleman, so that becomes one of
the best duos in the secty at receiver, if not
one of the best duos in the country of both
of those guys ascend to where they should. What LSU
did in the portal with Nick Anderson coming over from
Oh You Been hurt a bunch. But if you remember,

(45:12):
he was the one who caught that game winning touchdown
pass from Dylan Gabriel a couple of years ago and
against Texas in the corner of the end zone. So
a lot of physical ability there. And Barrion Brown popped
obviously at times at Kentucky at running back. I don't
know if you've seen pictures of Makay Hughes at Oregon,
but I'll tie this into a newer movie. I believe

(45:34):
it's the thing from Fantastic Four that's just a giant
man of rock. That's what Mkai Hughes looks like and
will look like in the Oregon backfield. He looks absolutely yoked.
Cannot wait to see what he does. I think good
reason given what he did at Tulane that he was
number one back in the portal this set, this session,

(45:54):
this season. You know, I'll stick with Oregon here just
for a second. But Dylan Thieneman, I think is going
to or the Oregon secondary that's a new look secondary
via the portal somewhat. And also Patrick Payton stick with
LSU just because they were so active and possibly the
team that is looking to change things more than any
other team in the SEC via the portal with Patrick

(46:15):
Payton along that defensive line, that's super interesting to me.
And then just overall portal wise, not one specific player
per se, but Texas Tech via I'm gonna call him
go T Campbell is that okay? Sure, spending and spending
and spending and spending some more on the portal, which,
by the way, good for them. You love a proactive

(46:35):
team trying to do everything it can to improve, and
Texas Tech just obviously has to be one of the
two or three stories this portal season.

Speaker 1 (46:44):
I agree. I completely agree. I'm really excited to see
your guy, Dylan Thieneman. Yes, some other new names just
to mention, just throw out there. Bryce Underwood mentioned top
of the show, but Bryce, uge quarterback recruit, big time
quarterback recruit from Michigan flipped from LSU. I think it
at least in part was because of Nil. That might

(47:04):
not have been the sole reason, but he's from Detroit six'
four to, two a eight he seemingly is stepping in
right away to be the starting quarterback For. Michigan has
to be better than what they had last. Season just
has to be. GREAT i was reading a little bit
about your guy To corey And moore up At. Oregon always.

Speaker 2 (47:19):
Ridiculous, yeah got.

Speaker 1 (47:21):
The first two targets of The oregon spring. Game not
a big, receiver but a burner and definitely has type
of game breaking ability that you won out.

Speaker 2 (47:29):
Wide should be, huge especially given you Know oregans receiving
that they're pretty deep with interesting, guys but they might
be looking for a number one guy With Evan stewart's
health in, Question so fascinating.

Speaker 1 (47:43):
Some of the other guys That i'm interested. IN i
talked With Gator dave About Dallas wilson committed and signed With,
oregon by the, Way, yeah they did and signed With.
Oregon one of the best wide receiver prospects a step
foot on campus For florida in. Years big, guy six,'
three one ninety five. Physical receiver another receiver to keep.
Your Ony gideon davidson's a name to Watch. At clemson

(48:05):
he may step right into the starting role at. Running,
Back yep clemson's kind of thin at, running back but
this guy averaged ten and a half a carry in.
High school he's a, burner potentially a very very good
situation for him to step in. Right away and the,
other one the big one that jumped out, to me two,
of them literally that jumped out, To Me, jakeem stewart
the edge GUY, for usc figures to be part of their,

(48:28):
Rotation somehow it's unclear, exactly how but a younger guy
reclassified into the twenty. Five class he just turned Eighteen
in may.

Speaker 2 (48:37):
Six six.

Speaker 1 (48:37):
Two seventy they don't make freshman like that at my.
HIGH school i don't know. About yours he figures to
play some role because he is just physically. So imposing
do you know what his?

Speaker 2 (48:47):
Nickname Is? GO ahead i THINK he's i think he's
actually barely played high. SCHOOL football i think they Call
Him thanos thanos.

Speaker 1 (48:53):
That's. Right yeah and the OTHER One's, dj pickett, big
corner five star, Oh, man yeah, six four one seventy EIGHT.
For lsu he is going to play. This season really
is a question of how much not if he's going to,
a big shutdown corner should go a long way towards helping.

Speaker 2 (49:10):
