If God is good, why is there so much suffering in the world? If God is good, why did my babies die?

Holly here-I've had empathy on the mind lately. There's been a lot of horrible things happening in the world lately, in America right now. Between COVID and the brutal killings of Ahmaud Arbery and George Floyd in past few weeks...these are some very big events that, while I am learning, and I fear I don't know enough to effectively speak on a podcast about.
But then again, we're not here to have all the answers to be experts on an...
Today we get the honor of learning from Kim Erickson, author of Surviving Sorrow: A Mother's Guide to Living With Loss. Kim began following Christ in 2008 after the death of her 3 year old son. She is a lawyer, she lives in Florida with her husband Devin and her son Ethan. As I (Holly) read through Kim's book in preparation for this episode, something that really stuck out to me was in the intro—Kim speaks to the reader-to the grie...
One of the things that has been the most encouraging to us in our grief has been connecting with others who "get it". People who can link their arms around us, cry with us, pray with us, point us to the truth, all while nodding their heads along with us and saying "me too". Our grieving experiences have been greatly impacted by so many books, blogs, songs and organizations and we want to ...
As we kick off 2020, we're joined by our friend Rachel George to talk about clinging to God when you don't feel His presence, the unique sorrow of loss upon loss, and processing grief through creativity. Rachel shares her story of miscarriage, losing her 1-month-old son Clive, and losing her 9-day-old daughter just 14 months later. Rachel authentically shares about the ways she wrestled with God and questioned her faith as she grie...
Twinkling lights, familiar carols, and family gatherings can make the void feel that much deeper when you're missing someone special. Christmastime can feel bittersweet and even downright painful when there is an empty stocking on the mantle or an unfilled seat at the table. For anyone who's grieving, this can be a particularly difficult time of year. In today's episode, we're talking about grief at Christmastime and chatting about...
As we continue the conversation on hope in the hospital, we're joined by our friend Tanisha Garnier of Namesake Ink. Tanisha shares her story of hope in the hospital, including the pain of infertility, the loss of her precious son Xavier at 21-weeks gestation, and the miraculous life of her daughter Ezra, who spent the first 3.5 months of her life in the hospital. Tanisha beautifully shares how the church reflects Christ in how we ...
The hospital is a place of new beginnings and heartbreaking endings. It is simultaneously full of the hope of birth and new life, and the sorrow of death and earthly loss. As loss mamas, memories of the hospital evoke emotional pain and even PTSD, and in other ways these memories can be quite comforting. I guess you could say our emotions surrounding the hospital are quite complicated. In today's episode, we're talking about both t...
This month we're continuing to address loss upon loss, sorrow upon sorrow. Rather than a life of comfort, Jesus promised us that His children would face heartache in this world. Even if we never walk through two identical losses, it is likely that the trials of this life are not all behind us and will result in the loss of something--perhaps our health, a friendship, a dream. Even when the hits seem to keep coming, Jesus encourages...
When we've walked through a traumatic event such as the loss of a child, it is easy to feel like we "paid our dues". It seems as if we've had more than our fair share of suffering and things can only get better from here. But what about when things don't seem to get better? How can we reconcile the goodness of God when the worst happens again and it feels like lightning keeps striking in the same spot? In today's episode, we're sha...
"I don't care, as long as they're healthy!" Chances are, you've heard this phrase spoken by or to a pregnant woman. You've likely said it yourself a few times. We're right there with you and have uttered these words more times than we can count. It wasn't until our firstborn sons came into the world, both with conditions deemed incredibly "unhealthy", that we began to take a deeper look at the implications of this phrase. Where do ...
While Mother's Day is a day of celebration for many, we know it can be bittersweet for our sisters who have lost children, have lost mothers, have strained relationships with their mothers or their children, are walking through infertility, or are walking through a variety of challenges unique to their motherhood. As we come out of Mother's Day weekend, we've compiled an audio Mother's Day card containing words of encouragement and...
In today's episode, Holly sits down to chat with our friend Kristin Ironside about the difficult journey of carrying a baby who isn't expected to live outside the womb. Kristin shares the grief that came with her daughter's diagnosis, as well as the ways God has revealed Himself to her and given her strength in the midst of the heartache. She explains how people have demonstrated the love of Christ, practical ways she is preparing ...
Pregnancy is arguably one of the most exciting times in a mother's life. But for some, it can also be one of the most painful and challenging seasons--especially for a mother carrying a baby with a terminal diagnosis. We often talk about the grief that follows the loss of a child, but today we're talking about the complicated mixture of grief and expectation that comes with carrying a child who may not come home. We're sharing our ...
No matter how painful or broken they may seem, our stories can be used by God as an avenue for sharing the gospel and speaking truth to a hurting world. In sharing our stories--whether with groups or new friends over coffee--we create space for the gospel to be shared, to point others to the hope of heaven, and to continually preach the gospel to ourselves as we continue to work out our grief. In today's episode, we're chatting abo...
In today's episode, Kristin is joined by her husband, Chris, to chat about marriage--specifically the challenge of marriage tested through the fire of grief and loss, loving your spouse well, even when you grieve differently, and the encouragement and admonition we can find in scripture. Chris shares the story of their firstborn son, Ethan, and talks about this painful loss from his perspective as a husband and a father. We hope yo...

The Burden is a documentary series that takes listeners into the hidden places where justice is done (and undone). It dives deep into the lives of heroes and villains. And it focuses a spotlight on those who triumph even when the odds are against them. Season 5 - The Burden: Death & Deceit in Alliance On April Fools Day 1999, 26-year-old Yvonne Layne was found murdered in her Alliance, Ohio home. David Thorne, her ex-boyfriend and father of one of her children, was instantly a suspect. Another young man admitted to the murder, and David breathed a sigh of relief, until the confessed murderer fingered David; “He paid me to do it.” David was sentenced to life without parole. Two decades later, Pulitzer winner and podcast host, Maggie Freleng (Bone Valley Season 3: Graves County, Wrongful Conviction, Suave) launched a “live” investigation into David's conviction alongside Jason Baldwin (himself wrongfully convicted as a member of the West Memphis Three). Maggie had come to believe that the entire investigation of David was botched by the tiny local police department, or worse, covered up the real killer. Was Maggie correct? Was David’s claim of innocence credible? In Death and Deceit in Alliance, Maggie recounts the case that launched her career, and ultimately, “broke” her.” The results will shock the listener and reduce Maggie to tears and self-doubt. This is not your typical wrongful conviction story. In fact, it turns the genre on its head. It asks the question: What if our champions are foolish? Season 4 - The Burden: Get the Money and Run “Trying to murder my father, this was the thing that put me on the path.” That’s Joe Loya and that path was bank robbery. Bank, bank, bank, bank, bank. In season 4 of The Burden: Get the Money and Run, we hear from Joe who was once the most prolific bank robber in Southern California, and beyond. He used disguises, body doubles, proxies. He leaped over counters, grabbed the money and ran. Even as the FBI was closing in. It was a showdown between a daring bank robber, and a patient FBI agent. Joe was no ordinary bank robber. He was bright, articulate, charismatic, and driven by a dark rage that he summoned up at will. In seven episodes, Joe tells all: the what, the how… and the why. Including why he tried to murder his father. Season 3 - The Burden: Avenger Miriam Lewin is one of Argentina’s leading journalists today. At 19 years old, she was kidnapped off the streets of Buenos Aires for her political activism and thrown into a concentration camp. Thousands of her fellow inmates were executed, tossed alive from a cargo plane into the ocean. Miriam, along with a handful of others, will survive the camp. Then as a journalist, she will wage a decades long campaign to bring her tormentors to justice. Avenger is about one woman’s triumphant battle against unbelievable odds to survive torture, claim justice for the crimes done against her and others like her, and change the future of her country. Season 2 - The Burden: Empire on Blood Empire on Blood is set in the Bronx, NY, in the early 90s, when two young drug dealers ruled an intersection known as “The Corner on Blood.” The boss, Calvin Buari, lived large. He and a protege swore they would build an empire on blood. Then the relationship frayed and the protege accused Calvin of a double homicide which he claimed he didn’t do. But did he? Award-winning journalist Steve Fishman spent seven years to answer that question. This is the story of one man’s last chance to overturn his life sentence. He may prevail, but someone’s gotta pay. The Burden: Empire on Blood is the director’s cut of the true crime classic which reached #1 on the charts when it was first released half a dozen years ago. Season 1 - The Burden In the 1990s, Detective Louis N. Scarcella was legendary. In a city overrun by violent crime, he cracked the toughest cases and put away the worst criminals. “The Hulk” was his nickname. Then the story changed. Scarcella ran into a group of convicted murderers who all say they are innocent. They turned themselves into jailhouse-lawyers and in prison founded a lway firm. When they realized Scarcella helped put many of them away, they set their sights on taking him down. And with the help of a NY Times reporter they have a chance. For years, Scarcella insisted he did nothing wrong. But that’s all he’d say. Until we tracked Scarcella to a sauna in a Russian bathhouse, where he started to talk..and talk and talk. “The guilty have gone free,” he whispered. And then agreed to take us into the belly of the beast. Welcome to The Burden.
