Speaker 1 (00:07):
Welcome to Truth Be Told about Going Wild. I'm your host,
Robert Hensley, and this is the podcast inspired by the
principles of Personal Rewilding. Today, I'd like to talk a
little bit about organic architecture. This was a phrase coined
by frankly Wright in the nineteen thirties as an architect
who called himself an organic architect. He was interested in
(00:30):
designing structures that looked as if they were growing out
of their surroundings, that they belonged in, that they were
part of their site. He was also trying to bridge
a gap between the occupant and the natural world by
using certain design principles to redirect their attention from the
shelter that he'd created back out into the natural world.
(00:55):
And nowhere is this more evident than in his design
of Falling Water at their run for the Edgar J.
Kauffman family. At Falling Water, we see that Frankly right
is using the masonry the stone work in the home
as a way of mimicking the horizontal lines and outcroppings
(01:20):
and recesses of the natural rock face along the stream,
as well as the overall design those cantily betrays jutting
out over the water and recessing back in underneath again
mimic the rock ledges along the stream, and especially the
ledge that creates the waterfall that exists under the house.
(01:44):
When we look at entryways hallways, they become very narrow, dark, compressed,
so that when people step into a space like the
open plan of the great room, we have a higher ceiling,
we have centralized lighting, but then there's a ceiling drop right,
which is not just a design aesthetic, but is also
(02:07):
structural that redirects the attention out the windows, kind of
like force perspective. Again, he is really drawing the attention
out back into the hillside. He's exploring this idea of
(02:28):
breaking open a box by removing vertical framing in corners,
by allowing glass to meet glass and what he called
a miterre corner or a miterre glass, so that there's
no vertical break in the view. Also, with the design
of this house, there is far more square footage outside
(02:52):
on terraces than there is on the interior of the space.
If we look at Lilian's bedroom, the wife, the room
that was designed for her has one of the largest
terraces in the entire structure, and it is a beautiful,
wide open space that is larger than the luxurious space
(03:17):
that he designed for her. On the interior of the house,
again this idea that we come out of a dark
hallway into this beautiful bedroom. We see this ceiling drop
which directs our attention out onto this terrace, and then
the terrace is this wide expanse that has more space
than the room itself. We also see the use of materials,
(03:48):
of this kind of authenticity of materials, where stonework is
always going to look like stonework. It's never painted or covered.
The concrete, the steel reinforced concrete is painted one color,
and color is the same outside as it is inside.
There is steel and glass. There are no window coverings.
(04:08):
Glass operates the way the glass does, creating these beautiful
panoramic views inside and out. When you're standing outside the
house and you look through, you are literally staring directly
through space from one side of the house through to
the other and again, this open plant, the sense of
open space and this free movement of air is really beautiful.
(04:36):
When we think about design or architectural design today, especially
when it comes to residences, we are so much about
the box right things having to be very sturdy, and engineered,
but also being very confining. Right, We very rarely see
(04:59):
a space that is so open that to have a
wall glass designed on accordion hinges so that that wall
could at almost disappear is a rarity. But then again,
so is custom design. So often now when we are
(05:19):
looking at having houses built or purchasing houses, we are
kind of customizing by a list of available options. We
don't have an architect who is designing around our lifestyle
or even around our ceiling height or our physical height.
I should say Franklin Wright was designing around the physical
(05:41):
height of the family as well. Ceilings will drop to six',
four which for some people today seems very, low but
for a family who stood on average five to, ten
that's still plenty of. Clearance they didn't have to, duck
they didn't feel as if they were being, squashed and
so he was able to curate this experience in this
home for this family to again address their needs as
(06:06):
far as shelter and, luxury but then also provide this
beautiful opportunity for them to exit the. Structure AND i
think the greatest part about his use of organic design
or organic unprotectivity is that when The kauffmans brought him
(06:27):
to visit the. Site they took him to a waterfall
where they loved swimming and spending time and sunbathing on the.
Rocks and while some people would consider that if this
is their favorite, place the house would be somewhere situated
so that they could see the. Waterfall, instead he's created
this structure where they can hear the, waterfall but they
(06:50):
can't see. It they still have to go back. Outside
they still have to visit the site and have this
process of engaging with the environment to see that thing
that they love so, much, right the. Waterfall so if
you ever have a chance to Visit Falling water at Bear,
(07:10):
run which is located In, milan it is very worth
the ticket, price very much worth the ticket. Price tours
are sold out months in. Advance sometimes the only thing
that you can do is buy a ticket to walk
the grounds and see the exterior of the, home and
it's still entirely worth. It but that is definitely something
(07:36):
to put on your bucket list and highly recommend. It
thank you so much for listening. TODAY i hope that
you are thinking about how you might step outside your
front door and engage with nature. Today Remember there are
