Speaker 1 (00:00):
I got to get appropriate music for our guests that
just walked in studio.
Speaker 2 (00:03):
Ladies and gentlemen, Hold on, I got I think I
got it. I got some for you.
Speaker 1 (00:06):
Here we go Trick Trick, Welcome to Detroit. We got
headphones for him, Ladies and gentlemen. A special guest that
Lydia wouldn't tell me who it was, the Mayor of
the City of Detroit.
Speaker 2 (00:19):
Mayor Mike like, good morning, boy, do you when you.
Speaker 1 (00:25):
Walk around, mister Mayor, does welcome to Detroit from Trick
Trick and Eminem just start playing anywhere you go.
Speaker 3 (00:30):
You know, it's maybe a new tradition.
Speaker 2 (00:33):
I like that. Wow, what do we.
Speaker 3 (00:38):
I'm down to my last few weeks in the job,
and there has been something I've been meaning to get
to for a while, and I'm doing this in my
closing weeks. And so uh to the host of the
longest running FM show in Michigan radio history, a member
(00:59):
of the Michigan Radio Hall of Fame, whose studio is
right here in Eastern Market and Detroit Mojo, I'm pleased
to present to you the Key to the city.
Speaker 4 (01:13):
Let's go, Let's go.
Speaker 3 (01:19):
That is a key, that's a key.
Speaker 1 (01:23):
Look at the pictures they chose to like child pictures
and everything.
Speaker 2 (01:27):
This is unbelievable. Wow.
Speaker 3 (01:29):
That is so history is that in medieval times the
only the most trusted people people actually lived up in
castles behind walls that had a key that unlocked the city,
and only the most trusted members of the city would
leave the city with the key. And so the last
(01:51):
two I presented this too were Aretha Franklin and Big Sean.
Speaker 2 (01:55):
Wow.
Speaker 3 (01:57):
Congratulations.
Speaker 1 (01:58):
Well boy, I got to tell you, I don't know
if I'm trusted, but honestly, I love this city so much,
and man, this is unbelievable. Thursday at the Radio Hall
of Fame induction, I was writing my speech. I was
talking about how in the speech and I'm going to
(02:20):
talk about that how Detroit Radio is the best radio
in the world. Radio was founded in Detroit, I mean,
with JP McCarthy and Dick Purtin and you know all
the legends that have been here, drewing Mike and it's just, honestly.
Speaker 2 (02:37):
To me, this is such an honor.
Speaker 1 (02:39):
Mayor, Thank you so much, and from a guy that
I got to tell you something, I respect the hell
out of you. You took over this job when I
don't know why you would.
Speaker 2 (02:47):
They were going through.
Speaker 1 (02:48):
Bankruptcy and this city is thriving and it is just
honestly on a path that I've never seen before in
my life. Thank you for what you've done to the
city of Detroit, and you're leaving it and such capable,
great hands to whoever it is that wins this next election.
Speaker 3 (03:04):
Well, I love the Factory Radio Network is here at
Eastern Market. You've helped bring life back to this place,
and I hope you enjoy being in the city.
Speaker 2 (03:11):
It's so funny. Can I tell you something. I'm to
put this right here.
Speaker 1 (03:14):
So when I started in Detroit, look at all these
people that are Jeff, my wife Chelsea came in. All
these are great salespeople and everybody. Can I tell you something.
When I first took this job, I was moving from Arizona.
I'm a Chicago kid, so Detroit was not the friendliest
place to go to because being a Chicago Bulls fan, obviously,
(03:38):
And I moved to Detroit and I said something to
the general manager at the time, Steve Shram, I'm like,
why is our radio station in Oak Park, Michigan?
Speaker 2 (03:47):
Like I don't understand that, And he said to me.
Speaker 1 (03:49):
He goes, well, you know the city and all this
sUAS are going through this whole thing. This is twenty
five years ago, twenty six years ago. And Bob Pittman,
who's our c e who if you've never met Bob,
Bob created MTV VH one, AOL everything. Bob Pittman used
to be on WDRQ back in the day. He was
a DJ on WDRQ. And Bob Pittman came to visit
(04:13):
Detroit in General Motors to sit down with this this
Mary Barr and the CEO of General Motors, and I
went with him to this we're driving. He goes, it
is to me ridiculous that we have Detroit radio stations
not in the city of Detroit. We are moving our
stations to the city of Detroit. And he made that
his mission. And we are so happy to be down here.
(04:34):
We're so blessed. It wouldn't be possible if it wasn't
for you. Congratulations, Thank you.
Speaker 2 (04:40):
Thank you.
Speaker 3 (04:40):
How are you doing? Things are good now? So packing
up the boxes?
Speaker 2 (04:45):
Are you really getting ready? So?
Speaker 1 (04:48):
Wait, so do you like, is there a time that
you have to be out of the Minogue mansion? Like,
do you have to be out by a certain day.
Speaker 3 (04:56):
I think my successor has been by to make sure
I've my way. But December thirty first, I'm out and
my wife Sonya and I will be renting a place
for a year. Okay the book Cadillacs stagging downtown Detroit.
Depending on what the voters decide, I might have residents
at Lansing. So wow, So we're going to rent for
(05:16):
the next year in Detroit and travel the state.
Speaker 5 (05:18):
Do you leave anything in the Minugian for whomever is
taking over the role as mayor, like a little note
or kind of like the president does for the next president.
Speaker 3 (05:27):
My wife, Sonya is the most thoughtful person of the world.
I'm sure she will have a gift basket sitting there
for the for the next mayor. But you know, I've
been very fortunate the people at Detroit provide that residence
in most of the furnishings are actually through a foundation,
so the furniture stays behind. Yeah, the house stays. It's
an easy move, but the memories will stay with me.
Speaker 1 (05:49):
Wow, I got I got so many questions I want
to ask you, you know, for those that don't know this,
and some of you may not because you don't. You know,
a lot of our listenerships sometimes doesn't keep track of
politics and stuff. You are running for governor, but you're
running not as a Democrat, which you are. You're going
to run as an independent, and a lot of people
(06:09):
probably are wondering why would you do that. You're a
lifelong Democrat. Would you answer a question like that?
Speaker 2 (06:15):
For me? I don't want to get into too much politics.
Speaker 3 (06:17):
Just I think politics as usual is bringing this state down,
is bringing our schools down, it's bringing our ecuntomy down.
And the Republicans and Democrats are so consumed with fighting
with each other. And so I'm just going around the
state saying, if you like the way politics is, you're
going to have Republican and Democratic choices. If you're fed
up with politics as usual and you want Michigan to
(06:38):
go in a new direction, I hope you'll listen to me.
And people every corner of this state have been very receptive.
Speaker 2 (06:44):
Man.
Speaker 1 (06:44):
I have loved what you've done. I really truly do.
I knew you back in the days of DMC. I'll
never forget meeting you with Lunn and Dawn Crowley and
everybody over there and seeing what you did to the
DMC and made a great hospital system in our city,
(07:06):
and then now then become the mayor of this great city.
That's I look at the people that run for politics
and I say to myself.
Speaker 2 (07:14):
Why would you do this? You are you're a business person,
you know what I mean?
Speaker 1 (07:18):
Like I look at Governor Wimer and I'm like, Governor Wimer,
you could probably be the CEO if you wanted to
a blue cross blue shield. What are you thinking? And
you've got people attacking you all the time. I would
love to see somebody like you be the governor of
this state.
Speaker 2 (07:31):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (07:32):
So I've had the opposite experience. The people of the
city have been tremendous to me for twelve years. Every
place I go, they've been enormously supportive and it's been
a joy.
Speaker 2 (07:42):
Wow.
Speaker 4 (07:42):
Let me ask you, is because you say December thirty
first the boxes are closed, well, locking the manow game
for the final time, you might have just answered it
with your answer being to people. So hopefully this isn't redundant.
What will you remember the most in your twelve year
ten year.
Speaker 3 (07:55):
Here is mirror the city of the trade you know,
I think the night that the trade station reopened with
cross and the symbol of Detroit's decline. But then last
Saturday the opening of the Ralph Wilson Park, one hundred
million dollar park on the riverfront. When people get down
to see it, it is it's just like one slide
(08:18):
and one area playground equipment after other. The kids have
just got such huge smiles. So there are going to
be some special memories of things that I think we've
made the city a little bit better.
Speaker 1 (08:28):
Is there anything that you didn't get to accomplish that
you kind of wish that you wouldn't You'll tell the
next mayor, Hey, this is something I really want you
to do.
Speaker 3 (08:35):
You know, I really would have liked to get more
buses on the road. I really have not been satisfied
with what we've done. And they're out order and people
have being hired and it's a year away. But that's
probably the area that I feel like I should have
made more progress.
Speaker 1 (08:50):
Yeah, Mayor dug in in studio with us this morning.
Mayor Mike Duggan, he is the mayor of the City
of Detroit, just presented this.
Speaker 2 (09:00):
Act open anything.
Speaker 1 (09:03):
It will that a real We're gonna tell you try it.
I'm gonna I'm gonna try. I'm gonna see if it
will open up American Coney Islands. I want to see
if Grace I can go in there and just start
stealing hot dogs from Grace.
Speaker 3 (09:15):
I'm pretty I'm pretty sure Grace will out.
Speaker 2 (09:19):
Honestly, I'm afraid of Grace.
Speaker 3 (09:20):
Grace.
Speaker 2 (09:21):
I'll come in during business hours. What's up, Dave? How
you doing, hey, Mojo? Yes, morning, Hi buddy, how are you?
Speaker 3 (09:30):
I'm doing well, man, how are you great?
Speaker 2 (09:31):
Say hi to the mayor.
Speaker 3 (09:34):
Mayor of Detroit. Good morning.
Speaker 2 (09:37):
What's going on, Dave?
Speaker 1 (09:40):
Hey, I just want to say first time, long time.
Speaker 2 (09:46):
Let's go keV.
Speaker 3 (09:47):
Hey, Mojo.
Speaker 1 (09:48):
I just want to congratulate you man. You're You're in
a group with Aretha Franklin and Big Sean. Yeah, that's
pretty sweet, man, congratulate Thank you, Dave. I appreciate it.
And honestly, they are way greater than I am. But
I I'm honored by that, and honestly I'm honored by
Friday or Thursday, the the great people that are in
(10:10):
the Hall of Fame Detroit. You know legends that are
in the Hall of Fame. Uh Casey Casem a Detroit legend,
went to Wayne State you know JP McCarthy, Like I said,
there was you remember listening to JP, don't you kidding?
Speaker 3 (10:23):
I grew up by JP.
Speaker 2 (10:24):
JP.
Speaker 1 (10:25):
JP McCarthy could get the President of the United States
to just pick up the Oval Office phone at a whim,
like not call any press secretaries or anything like that.
That's how great of a broadcaster he was. Crystal, what's up,
same Joe?
Speaker 5 (10:38):
Congratulations you are just so amazing. I totally love you
and I am a long time, long time.
Speaker 2 (10:45):
You should have a feet.
Speaker 3 (10:46):
For that, but we know you need to drop the beat.
Speaker 2 (10:51):
For us long time, long time. That's right.
Speaker 3 (10:53):
And Mayor Degan, you are.
Speaker 2 (10:55):
Amazing as well.
Speaker 5 (10:56):
I am a suburban night so I don't get the
vote in Dwayne count but I.
Speaker 2 (11:01):
Love Michigan and Michigan has definitely adopted me. But just
you know, Mojo, you were just great. Retire and I
know that I'm not going. I gotta be honest with you.
Speaker 1 (11:14):
That's part of I want to talk about this a
little later this morning, because there's part of this getting
this honor that is a little almost depressing because it
makes you feel like, Okay, you're.
Speaker 4 (11:23):
Not one of the blessed ones that can get your
flowers while you can still smell it. Some people wait
and wait until the end of the chapter. Is cluse
you're still writing your book.
Speaker 1 (11:30):
At the Radio Hall of Fame, the first people getting
inducted are the what is it, imposthumous or whatever. Yeah,
people that died and on one of them is Steve Smith,
who is a legendary radio programmer programmed Hot ninety seven
in New York and Power ninety two in Phoenix, and
he's like a.
Speaker 2 (11:47):
Power in Los Angeles.
Speaker 1 (11:48):
The guy should have been in the Hall of Fame
before he died, and he unfortunately passed this past year.
Speaker 2 (11:53):
So Crystal, thank you, I love you so much.
Speaker 1 (11:55):
Real quick, I'm thinking about this, Mayor Duggan, first time
long time. Yeah, we do this whenever people call up
and they've been listening to the show going to be
on twenty six years in February, and so we first time,
long time, we'll give them a little airhorn.
Speaker 2 (12:12):
And you just got it so that.
Speaker 1 (12:14):
We don't have a key to the city, but I'll
give you a key to this BAI building and Christos
will help its right.
Speaker 3 (12:19):
Up there with my best memories there.
Speaker 1 (12:24):
I want to ask you a couple of quick questions
about the city and just like you know where it's going.
And I don't know if you have even publicly come
out and said who you want to see be the
next mayor? But who do you want to see the
next time?
Speaker 3 (12:38):
I have endorsed the council president, Mary Sheffield, Mary Cheffe.
I've been a partner for the last twelve years in
the direction that this city's gone. I didn't do this
by myself, you know, we had twelve years of working
together with the council and with the neighborhood groups and
the like, and I think we need to continue that.
This us versus them politics that held the city back.
I think we've put behind us are good.
Speaker 1 (13:01):
Is this something where you look at her and seeing
the people that you're going to leave behind? Because program
directors know this. I don't know if Tony's here, but
Tony's probably on his way. You never want to see
your program director or you know, general manager. We got
Colleen who's hearing. I don't want to see her go
somewhere else. Like I don't want to see the company
move her because when they move her, sometimes they end
(13:22):
up bringing somebody in that shifts up the talent pool.
Speaker 2 (13:25):
That you have that are with you?
Speaker 1 (13:27):
Is is Council President Sheffield going to keep a lot
of the same people that you have?
Speaker 3 (13:32):
You know, I think you can expect the new mayor
to put in their own administration. Now. I'm glad she's
already said publicly that Chief bedisone will will stay and
I think you'll see a number of key people stay.
I think she'll bring in a good amount of fresh blood,
and that's what you want from any administration.
Speaker 2 (13:47):
Great, great, I love it all right.
Speaker 1 (13:49):
I don't know what else I can ask you, other
than can I take a picture with you? Is it?
Speaker 2 (13:53):
Okay? Can we do a picture together? Let's asking for stuff.
We got to a deciber.
Speaker 4 (13:57):
What do you want?
Speaker 2 (13:57):
What do you want? Wanting to be Graham marshuet. But
they giving actually they are they announced who's doing it?
Speaker 3 (14:06):
Yes, I.
Speaker 2 (14:08):
Can't remember de skill. Okay, okay, this is funny. For
the last ten let him be come on to me,
walk behind you.
Speaker 3 (14:20):
For the last ten years I have driven the Grand
Marshal in the Carmen Harlan one here yere, Judge Damon
Keith one year, Lomas Brown one year. Okay, so I'm
not sure who's driving I got your license?
Speaker 2 (14:33):
How did I was it with Lomas?
Speaker 3 (14:37):
He is a funny guy. Yeah, it was. It was
the first year the Lions were making a run for
the playoffs. It was a lot more fun for him
going down that parade about that year that it might
have been in other years.
Speaker 1 (14:49):
Are you going to I'm like, I got tears are
snapped from crying earlier this morning. Are what happens if
you know you're out? What's the last day of your
actual December third? First, the Lions win the Super Bowl?
I mean, can you get Can you say, Mayor Sheffield
or whoever?
Speaker 3 (15:07):
Well, the good news is I have my Lions season
tickets from twenty five years ago and which my brother
has been using because as may or it's been hard
to sit in the middle of the stands and people
behind you get mad about taking pictures. But I'm looking
forward to January. We're turning to buy seats where I can. Yeah,
from a closer approximity. When is the governor's race? When
(15:28):
is a year from now? So it's a year from us.
Speaker 1 (15:30):
You've got a whole year of campaigning and doing all
that stuff.
Speaker 3 (15:33):
I'm visiting little towns and farms all around the state.
It's a great experience.
Speaker 1 (15:36):
So I don't know if this has been even talked about,
but you know, this radio show is not out only
on in Detroit, but we're on in Grand Rapids. We're
number one in Grand Rapids. We are also number one
in Toledo, so you catch a lot of them in row.
You know, listenership West Michigan doesn't necessarily know Mike Duggan
like Detroit knows Mike Dougan.
Speaker 3 (15:55):
There's no question about it. That's exactly the issue. And
so I think I spent all day Thursday in communities
and around Lansing. I split all day Friday in communities
in and around Genesee County, and it's just wonderful to
get to meet folks in a lot of these small towns,
people who live along Lake Huron. And what I'm finding
(16:16):
is people everywhere are kind of tired of the parties and.
Speaker 2 (16:19):
Looking for change.
Speaker 1 (16:21):
Well, and this is to everybody that's listening. And I
don't know if I can't even endorse. I don't know
how Colleen feels about that. Whatever the deal is, I
hope that whoever wins the governor's race and our mayor's
race here in Detroit carries on the tradition that you
did of onward and upward.
Speaker 2 (16:39):
I mean Detroit.
Speaker 1 (16:41):
We all know what Detroit was like when it went
through bankruptcy, right, We all kind of knew that was
the biggest national story. We were on headlines, national news
at night. And to see what Detroit is now. People
come to the city and they're blown away by how
beautiful it is and honestly, our sports teams kind of
thrive because of that too.
Speaker 2 (17:01):
So it's really special.
Speaker 1 (17:02):
So if you can do what you did in Detroit
to the state, I think it's going to be an
amazing you know time for this this community.
Speaker 3 (17:11):
Well, it's I was a kid who grew up in
Detroit and who this time of the year when they
started to decorate downtown for Christmas and go see Sanet
Hudson's and go down for Sanders. Detroit was a special
place to grow up. And we're making it a special
place again. And so it's been it's been just a
joyful experience for me. I'm ready to go do something else.
Speaker 1 (17:31):
The only thing, the only thing though, I will never
forget this. So I went to a game. I went
to a Michigan Michigan State. It was actually a basketball
game and Brian mcsalom took took me to the game,
and you were with us at the time. And I
remember Joey from our show was there and my son
Joe is there, and they're like, God, you got to
(17:52):
be careful. If you're the you know, the mayor, you
gotta be careful who you're rooting for. You are not careful,
you will come out right away and say who you
root for.
Speaker 3 (17:59):
A couple of times the Michigan basketball coaches have mentioned
that they felt like the referee heard me.
Speaker 1 (18:05):
I'm not shy with those games, although you do get
along with Tom though right to is great.
Speaker 3 (18:10):
Yeah, it's been great for great for the city and
great for this for this state. And we've done some
things together.
Speaker 2 (18:15):
But that's great.
Speaker 4 (18:16):
I don't know why I want to access, but I
got to ask you. Are you dressing up for Halloween?
Speaker 2 (18:21):
I don't think so, Okay, all right, I just had
to know.
Speaker 1 (18:24):
Guys.
Speaker 5 (18:24):
All I heard is December thirty first is his last
day in the Median Mansion.
Speaker 1 (18:28):
New Year's party, Marshall, how about our holiday party?
Speaker 2 (18:34):
Holiday?
Speaker 1 (18:36):
Although you may not get your your security deposit back
if we their party.
Speaker 2 (18:41):
Let's get I want to get a picture more parties
at the you know where? Should we do it right
behind the sign. We're gonna do it live on air.
I like live on air.
Speaker 1 (18:50):
We got no breaks, we have no commercials right now
we're commercial free.
Speaker 2 (18:54):
Thank you so much.
Speaker 5 (18:55):
Keep talking.
Speaker 2 (18:57):
No, you got it?
Speaker 3 (19:00):
Oh that's good.
Speaker 2 (19:02):
Perfect. Can I get my wife in this one too?
Tells me come on, Chelsea, come on in. This is amazing.
She is she is crazy.
Speaker 1 (19:11):
She holds all my keys right there.
Speaker 2 (19:14):
Get on the other side, right over the side.
Speaker 3 (19:16):
Yeah, the.
Speaker 2 (19:19):
No more parking ticket, No, no, no, no, that's my
next question.
Speaker 1 (19:23):
Question, Mayor, you have a parking person that gives gives
tickets right over here, and there's no there's no sign
that says you can't be too close to the corner.
And she's given Covi a ticket, she's given Neil Feldman
(19:43):
from Carlos golf Land ticket.
Speaker 3 (19:45):
Guys, guys, use the app.
Speaker 2 (19:52):
Mister Mayor, I thank you so much.
Speaker 1 (19:54):
I seriously, this is even a greater honor than Thursday
getting into the radio.
Speaker 5 (20:01):
He has wanted this key for decades.
Speaker 3 (20:04):
Two decades.
Speaker 1 (20:06):
To me, I always thought that you get a key
to the city. Guess what you made it?
Speaker 2 (20:09):
You know what I mean? And this kind of feels
like you kind of made it a little bit.
Speaker 3 (20:13):
Up to twenty five years, we can say you've made it.
Speaker 2 (20:16):
I love it. I love it all right.
Speaker 1 (20:18):
Well, you know what my first phone call is going
to be after the show's over with at ten thirty,
I'm calling Dick Purtin up to see if Dick Purton
ever got dickon.
Speaker 3 (20:26):
Never got to keep you, never got to this.
Speaker 1 (20:29):
I love it all right. I love you guys so much.
Thank you guys so much.
Speaker 3 (20:36):
Thank you.
Speaker 1 (20:37):
I really appreciate you. Jeffrey, thank you, Buddy, I appreciate you.
This is the best man. I feel like we need
a I love you.
Speaker 2 (20:44):
Thank you.
Speaker 3 (20:45):
Colleen.
Speaker 1 (20:45):
What a what an unbelievable honor? That is Holy cow,
that's craziness.
