It's Mornings with Al Ferrabee and Lisa Best on CFA's

Speaker 2 (00:36):
1070. Well, BC community of Bella Bella got a high
profile visitor over the weekend in the form of the
world's richest man, and a gentleman that, uh, was, uh,
following this is, uh, joining us, uh, from Bella Bella. Uh,
this is, uh, and we're talking to live to airport
shuttle driver Sean Carter, who's joining us here at CAX 1070.
Hi Sean, how are you doing?

(00:58):
Good. How are you doing? Good, man. How long have
you been in Bela Bella?
I've been up here about 8.5 years now. All right. And, uh, shuttle,
airport shuttle driver, that's what you do?
Yeah, that's what I do now. Yeah, I've uh worked
in the airport in the past, used to be a
fuel truck driver there as well, so I'm pretty familiar
with the airport and what goes on there and have
a lot of friends there as well. Yeah, for those

(01:20):
who don't know, Bella Bella, how big of a community
is it these days?
Uh, well, it's a very small community, only about 1400 people. Um,
it's on a, it's a small village on an island
called Campbell Island, so it's a semi-remote in the sense that, uh,
it's kind of out in the middle of nowhere, but
we still do have uh daily flights to Vancouver every day.

(01:41):
We have a weekly BC ferry service, so you can
get here, but, uh, it, it's a bit of a
project to get here. Mhm.
Uh, your visitor that caused all kinds of, uh, attention.
The world's richest man, Elon Musk was there?
That's right. Yeah, Saturday afternoon, um, a private jet landed
up at the airport, and, um, you know, that happens

(02:03):
every now and then. We get private jets in, uh,
fancy helicopters, that kind of thing. So at first didn't
arouse too much attention or, um, you know, the last
thing I thought is it could be Elon Musk up there.
But uh I could start hearing some mumblings and people
talking about, oh, you know, is that really him out
there and um.

(02:23):
You know, within a few minutes, we kind of had
uh the confirmation that I, uh, at first I, I,
I wasn't really paying attention to what was going on
with the mumblings and
Uh, eventually, I said, OK, who, who was it out there?
And they said, Elon Musk, and I was like, no way.
And sure enough, uh, there was a photo taken of him,
and I seen the photo, and I was like, wow,

(02:43):
that is definitely Elon Musk. We got uh confirmation he
was there and uh yeah, it was, it was pretty neat.
Uh, any particular reason? Do you know why he was there?
Um, we have a kind of suspicion that, um, nearby
Bela Bela, about 150-minute helicopter ride, there's um a place

(03:04):
called Mascal Bay, which is owned by James Murdoch, Rupert
Murdoch's son.
So I kind of looked up online to see if
there's an Elon Musk uh James Murdoch connection. And sure enough,
James Murdoch used to be on the Tesla board, so
I'm sure they are at least uh friends or were, and, um, I'm,
I have to figure he got off his private jet.

(03:26):
He got onto a helicopter and I figure it's towards
Nascal Bay is where he went.
Uh, we're talking right now to Sean Carter. He's a
Bella Bella airport shuttle driver, and, uh, Elon Musk was
uh in the community. It was, it was Saturday, Sunday,
did you say Saturday? Uh, Saturday is when he landed, yeah,
so the jet landed, got onto a helicopter, uh, so

(03:47):
he's very, very brief, um, first encounter there, but enough
that we saw him and got a couple of photos, um,
and then we kind of knew, OK.
What he just did there, he's gonna do in reverse
order on his way out most likely. So we knew
within a couple of days, uh, that if we see
that private jet land again, and then we see the

(04:10):
helicopter come back, that it would, when the helicopter comes
back after that private jet has landed, we knew that,
you know, Elon Musk is likely to be on that helicopter.
So there was probably about 8 of us up there.
That we're kind of, we saw the private jet land
and we knew, um, OK, this helicopter will probably be
back soon. We saw it take off the helicopter and

(04:33):
within an hour it was back and sure enough we
saw Elon Musk on board, then we saw him get
out right away. Interesting. Uh, was it a bigger buzz
within community or, you know, the media attention that is
coming your way?
Um, I would say at first the community, there was,
there was a small buzz, but there was definitely some
people that didn't believe it, so I don't think it

(04:54):
really
Blew up or, um, you know, for that reason, there
wasn't too many people that were up there looking for
him because I think a lot of people at first, uh,
just didn't believe it and thought a lot of us
were joking when we said Elon Musk was up there.
And then I think a lot of people also thought
he just kind of landed in his plane, maybe took
on some fuel and then took off, and that was it.

(05:15):
They didn't realize, oh, he's coming back in a couple
of days, so. Right.
Very interesting. And yeah, it's, it's definitely been blown up
in the media a bit for sure. There's been a
lot of articles and stories on it. Yeah, we're talking
to you, so it's, and I guess it's, you know,
however you feel about him personally, some people don't like
them and, you know, but I guess it's just still
a big deal because it's in the, you know, a

(05:37):
place you wouldn't normally see something, somebody like that, I
guess is, uh, is what people are saying.
Exactly. That's, that's just it. Um, you know, there's mixed
reviews and mixed feelings about how uh people felt about
him being here. And, uh, even for me, you know,
I'm not, I'm kind of neutral. I don't love the
guy or hate the guy or anything like that, but, uh,
Bela Bela is, uh, like I say, a very small place. Um,

(06:01):
you're not getting in here, it's, um, with the helicopter
with the whole village hearing it come over from miles away. So, um, yeah, we,
we noticed when planes and
Things that are kind of out of place come here.
And uh yeah, for that reason alone, it was just
kind of exciting, like I say, uh opinions aside about
Elon Musk, uh, it was, it was neat to see

(06:23):
the richest man in the world in these, these parts. Sean,
thank you for this. Appreciate the time this morning.
Oh, no problem, Al. All right, thank you. That's Sean Carter.
He's an airport shuttle driver in Bella Bella joining us.
8:57 here at CFA 1070. 9 o'clock news is coming
up next on radio. Lisa has that. Uh, the live
show from, uh, the national show with, uh, that she

(06:44):
comes up, uh, from Ottawa right after that, and Adam
Sterling hits the airwaves at 11 o'clock this morning. Television
top stories of the day. CTV News, Vancouver Island is
