Το 1989, που έπεσε το Τείχος του Βερολίνου, ο Χρήστος Χωμενίδης φοιτούσε στη Νομική Σχολή και με συμφοιτητές του βρέθηκαν καλεσμένοι του Πανεπιστημίου Λομονόσοφ στη Μόσχα, σε ένα πρόγραμμα ανταλλαγής φοιτητών. Ο συγγραφέας θυμάται τι του έκανε εντύπωση εκείνους τους μήνες στην πρωτεύουσα της τότε Σοβιετικής Ένωσης, την εποχή της περεστρόικα: «Η παραγωγή αγαθών στα τέλη των 80ς είχε πέσει σε πλήρες τέλμα. Τα μοναδικά προϊόντα που πωλούνταν σε αφθονία ήταν κομπόστες σε μεγάλα βάζα και λαστιχένιες γαλότσες. Τα ήθη ήταν εντυπωσιακά ελεύθερα. Δεν εννοώ εκπορνευμένα. Οι γυναίκες απλώς ένιωθαν αυτεξούσιες, κοινωνικά ισότιμες, απαλλαγμένες από την πατριαρχία και από τις θρησκευτικές προκαταλήψεις. Οι νέοι ζούσαν όσο πιο έντονα μπορούσαν. Η αδυναμία καταναλωτικής εκτόνωσης τους έκανε να μοιάζουν πιο ουσιαστικοί».
