Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hi, my name is Sherry
and welcome to my podcast,
holistic Harper, and thisepisode is about boosting your
immune system, and I just wantto do a brief overview of the
immune system and the fivemembers on the team.
We have the white blood cells, the antibodies, the lymphatic
(00:22):
system, the bone marrow and thethiamus.
These are the five members onyour immune system team and they
have a big job and we're goingto go over how they work.
They work by, they worktogether by identifying pathogen
just trying to make its wayinto your body I'm going to call
(00:44):
it unauthorized pathogen Intoyour body.
They see it, they attack it,they destroy it and they create
memory cells and then theycreate immunity.
So the next time thisunauthorized pathogen makes its
way into your body, your bodyalready have all the information
(01:13):
it needs to destroy it.
Now, how do you boost yourimmune system?
I think that is important andI'm going to start with
lifestyle change.
Lifestyle change we're going toaim to change the way we eat,
or we're going to add morevegetables and fruit, protein
and grains into our body, intoour diet.
(01:34):
We're going to try to eat morelean proteins like chicken.
We can do more vegetables andwe can do more fruit.
I was just in the store theother day and I saw these very
large strawberries.
They were huge and I said whoeats strawberries this big?
(01:58):
And I said, today I am going toeat those strawberries this big
.
So I got these very bigstrawberries they were like the
size of small apples and I gotsome navel oranges.
So when I got home I slicedthem up and I put them in my
food dehydrator and hours later, the next morning, they were
(02:24):
nice and dry to the point.
If you just snap them they willbreak like a chip.
And if you're thinking thatyou're eating a chip, you're
really just incorporatinghealthy foods into your body.
So you want to make sure thatwhen you make this lifestyle
change, you're going to make itfun.
I absolutely love the driedoranges, the sliced oranges.
(02:47):
They're beautiful and they theysnap like a chip.
I would.
They're all gone.
Let me just say that I torethem up.
They were delicious.
Exercise we want to make surethat we are getting our walks in
and you can even incorporatesome dancing.
(03:08):
Shape your romp shaker, shakeit, shake your rump shake.
So you want to make sure thatyou're getting in some type of
movement.
So exercise is fun and dancingyou can do.
Dancing you can do walking.
Walking doesn't cost usanything.
Neither does dancing Doesn'tcost us a dime.
(03:29):
Go for a walk.
When you go for a walk, you'rebuilding a stronger immune
system, and I'm going to tellyou how later.
Try stress management.
Stress management is alsoanother way to build your immune
system.
So if you're in a situation oryou're thinking about something
that's really stressing you out, just kind of close your eyes,
(03:53):
take a deep breath, just try tobreathe in and breathe out, to
slow down your heart rate andtry to de-stress yourself.
Try meditation, anotherlifestyle change you can do stay
hydrated.
I find that I do not drinkenough water.
(04:15):
I do drink a lot of liquids, just not enough water.
Water is life.
Try to get some water in, sostay hydrated.
Try to get some water in, sostay hydrated.
Limit yourself from drinkingtoo much alcohol.
Maybe one glass of wine a day.
I will probably have that glassof wine just before I go to bed
(04:36):
.
The next lifestyle change, whichI think is very important, is
sleep.
Now I was watching this wholenews report on that sweet number
.
That sweet number is aroundseven.
(04:58):
So seven to nine hours is therecommended amount of sleep that
you are supposed to get a night.
I only get about five or six.
But what I do even get five orsix is I set up my room for
success, and what I mean by thatis I try to set my room up for
(05:22):
me to get a good night's sleep,or try to fall asleep and get
those five to six barely kind ofsqueaking in seven.
I turn off my light.
I turn my lamp to the dimmestsetting that I can get it to.
I try to make sure the room isnice and cool, not too hot, and
(05:46):
the number one thing is turn offthe TV.
The TV will keep you engaged.
I know it does for me.
I am laying there and I'mtrying to go to sleep and I'm
listening and this lady is inthe room and then this monster's
in there and she's like I'mlike get out, lady.
No, turn off the TV.
And she's like I'm like get out, ladies.
No, turn off the TV, becauseyou're not going to be wondering
(06:08):
if she's going to make it outthat room or out the house or if
she's going to have an accident.
Turn off the TV because it'salso messing with your circadian
system where you have too muchlight coming in, so no TV.
So you're trying to set yourroom up for success.
(06:29):
I will have the dimming settingfor the lamp that I have.
I will have my book light out,I'll have it around my neck and
I I will read a nice book.
Or I will say, alexa, turn onsome sleep music.
And it will turn on some sleepmusic and it would turn on some
sleep music.
But I always make sure I set itto only run for about two hours
(06:50):
, because the same thing thatputs me to sleep is also the
same thing that will wake me up.
So I don't need that continuousnoise, I need it to put me to
sleep and then it goes off.
So I'll let it run for abouttwo, three hours, two or three
hours.
So it let it run for about twoor three hours so it will stop
playing in about two or threehours.
Let's move on.
(07:11):
Before I move on to naturalremedies and supplements, I want
to put my disclaimer in.
My disclaimer is I am not alicensed professional doctor.
I do not work in the healthindustry.
So I ask you please to consultyour doctors before you add any
(07:35):
natural remedies or supplementsto your diet.
Make sure you check with yourdoctor first, because I made
that mistake of and it justseems so innocent I I added this
licorice tea to my diet atnight.
I was drinking it every nightfor about I guess about a week
(07:57):
to two weeks.
Oh my goodness, that tea is sogood.
But then I found out this teaactually stops my body from
absorbing my medicine.
And I found it out because Iwas starting to not feel well
and I went to the doctor.
I'm like, look, the medicineyou gave me is not working.
(08:18):
What's up, what are you doing?
I said, well, I'm doing this, that and the other thing.
And she said, well, and she'slooking it up.
Oh yeah, you do licorice.
Don't do that.
Licorice root tea.
Some of these natural remediesare stimulants, so you don't.
You want to make sure thatyou're checking with your doctor
to make sure they're notinterfering with some medicine
(08:40):
that you really probably need tobe on this medicine.
So make sure you consult withyour doctor before taking any of
these natural remedies andsupplements.
So let's go over some of thenatural remedies that I want to
talk about, and we're going totalk about turmeric.
(09:00):
Absolutely love turmeric.
Turmeric is a new discovery forme when it come down to
drinking it as a tea.
Turmeric tea has wonderfulproperties.
It has anti-inflammatoryproperties.
What do I hear when I say that?
Less pain?
(09:21):
The other property that it hasis the antioxidant property, so
it is very helpful for theimmune system.
So you maybe want to try someturmeric tea.
Check out my video for silvertea, where I did a whole episode
(09:41):
on my three favorite teas andyou can get a couple recipes
with the silver tea.
I like to with the on silvertea, my three favorite teas.
So check out.
Was it my three favorite teaswhere I did the turmeric where I
?
I will have turmeric after I eat.
(10:04):
And why do I?
Why did I mention that?
I mentioned that?
Because I think turmeric isgood but it's strong on my
stomach and my stomach's alittle sensitive.
So I like to have turmericafter I eat because it is good
for the digestive system and itdoesn't have any caffeine in it.
(10:26):
So I mean you can drink it atnighttime too, but I like to
drink it after lunch.
It really gives me, it wakes meup and it's good for pain.
So try turmeric tea.
Check out my video on my threefavorite teas.
On silver tea, I will leave thelink below so you can check out
and get some recipes.
(10:47):
Because I make my turmeric teawith nut milk and I'm mentioning
the milk only because you aregoing to be trying to help your
immune system when you have acold or when you have the flu
and you don't want to have milklike cow's milk that will cause
(11:08):
a mucus buildup.
You want to have a tea that'slike.
The nut milk is very helpful.
I like to do almond coconutmilk or just almond milk,
because the almond coconut blendI really like, but I also can
do just almond milk by itself.
So check out that video, subscribe, give it a thumbs up
(11:30):
and hit that bell notificationand that way you'll be notified
when I release new episodes forthe Silver Tea Podcast as well.
Next is ginger.
So far it was the turmeric, which is.
It was the turmeric, which is aroot tea which is a root, and
then it's uh, ginger, which is aroot.
(11:51):
Ginger is very nice.
It's very relaxing, it's veryrefreshing.
It also has a nice propertyit's an immune stimulator with
an antioxidant.
So this actually helpsstimulate your immune system to
be healthier and it also has theantioxidant property.
So you can just take a nicechunk of ginger.
(12:14):
Just slice it real thin, put itin some hot water and some
honey and you're well on yourway to boosting your immune
system.
Garlic to boosting your immunesystem.
Garlic Now I was reading aboutgarlic and I like to cook with
garlic.
I won't necessarily make anyteas with garlic, but I will
(12:37):
cook with garlic.
Garlic is really good in food.
It brings a wonderful flavor tofood, but I will not eat it raw
.
I was reading some people justlike to pop it in their mouth
and just eat it.
I am not going to be hangingaround that person, but anyway,
let's move on past that.
(12:57):
So some of the properties thatgarlic has is antibacterial,
antifungal and antiviralproperties that are good and
assist with the immune system.
Citrus fruits them citrus fruits.
(13:21):
Like I told you earlier, thelifestyle change.
If you want to add more fruitto your diet, I added it by
slicing oranges and drying themalong with strawberries.
Wonderful, really good vitaminc you're adding with the
antioxidant along with it.
So if you want to just slice alittle bit of lemon and some hot
water with some honey, lemon isalso a cancer fighter.
(13:44):
Along with it has rich invitamin c and it's an
antioxidant.
So check it out and then enjoyit.
You know, I think I think youwill enjoy it, because lemon is
also good for your digestivesystem.
So I'm going to jump on over tosupplements.
(14:06):
So remember what I said aboutsupplements Please consult your
doctor before you start some ofthese supplements, because I
already told you my experience.
Vitamin D Vitamin D kind of goeshand in hand with the lifestyle
changes that I talked aboutearlier.
(14:26):
You want to make sure thatyou're getting your walk in, and
when you're getting your walkin, you're also getting that
vitamin D in there.
And when you're getting yourwalk-in, you're also getting
that vitamin D in there.
And vitamin D enhances thepathogen fighting effects of the
white blood cells and decreasesinflammation.
Wow, there we go again.
(14:48):
What am I hearing?
What am I hearing?
What am I hearing again?
I am hearing less pain.
So get out and get your walk in.
It is really good to get yourvitamin D.
Vitamin C we can get our vitaminC again.
(15:08):
That falls under the categoryof lifestyle changes and
increasing your vegetables andyour fruit into your diet.
So vitamin C acts as anantioxidant, protects the body
from toxins and supportingimmune function.
So try to increase your vitaminc by increasing.
(15:32):
But try I'm sorry, let merephrase that Try to get more
vitamin C by increasing yourfruits In your diet and try to
make it fun, because when you, when you're changing your diet,
you don't want to make it boring, then you don't really stick
with it.
So try to Find ways to enjoyChanging your lifestyle,
(15:53):
changing your diet, because thenthis way you will stick with it
, because you enjoy cooking withginger or having ginger tea,
cooking with garlic or bitinginto garlic.
I mean, if that's your thing, Isay go for it.
I'm going to go on to elderberry.
Elderberry is also really goodfor boosting the immune system
(16:21):
and it helps reduce inflammation.
It also contains antioxidants.
So again, elderberry is reallyreally good for the immune
system.
It actually helps with theimmune system.
Remember we talked about thefive members.
That's a part of your immunesystem.
So you want To make sure yougive your immune system and your
(16:43):
five members of your team Somehelp.
So pass that ball, you knowthey go.
Pass the ball, you know.
Anyway, I know.
You know what I mean.
I'm talking about basketball.
I'm going to talk aboutprobiotics, because I find it
strange that people preferprobiotics in so many different
(17:06):
ways and there are differentways that you can get probiotics
into your body.
Now why am I talking aboutprobiotics?
Probiotics is more for the guthealth, but your gut works with
your immune system.
So you want to make sure thatyou're getting probiotics.
(17:27):
And there are several ways thatyou can get probiotics into
your body.
You can take it by a capsule.
That's how I take mine.
You can drink.
You can have a drink by.
My brother-in-law likes to getthese drinks.
It's like a fermented something.
(17:47):
I don't know what it is, but ithas probiotics in it.
He has it every day.
You can have it in yogurt.
I have a friend.
She doesn't want to take it asa capsule.
She prefers to have her yogurtevery day.
So gut health, which is closelylinked to the immune function,
(18:12):
is important.
So try to get your probioticsin any way that you prefer,
because there are different waysyou can get it in.
There's also sourdough.
It's rich in probiotics andprebiotics.
Echinacea tea Echinacea may helpreduce the duration and the
(18:38):
severity of colds and otherinfections.
So echinacea you start seeingechinacea a lot during the cold
and flu season because they'retrying to get you to drink and
boost your immune system duringthe cold and flu season.
So get out there and get yourechinacea in Now.
(19:02):
I'll save the best for last.
Zinc Zinc acts as an antioxidantprotecting cells from damage
caused by the free radicals.
What are free radicals?
Those are the pathogens thatmade their way in, and now your
(19:22):
body is in a full-out war tofight off these free radicals,
and zinc is there to assist.
Free radicals can weaken theimmune system by damaging the
immune cells, so zincantioxidant properties are vital
(19:44):
for protecting a robust immunedefense.
Now listen to that.
That zinc is in there.
It's down in the trenches, it'sin there fighting.
Let me tell you more about zinc.
Zinc helps protect theintegrity of skin and mucous
(20:04):
membranes, which are the body'sfirst line of defense against
pathogens.
A strong barrier can a strongbarrier can protect pathogens
from entering the body andcausing infections.
So what you want to do isunderstand this.
Skin is the largest organism onyour body.
(20:29):
I did a whole thing on how totake care of your skin in one of
my Silver T episodes, becausethe zinc is necessary for DNA
synthesis and cell division, both of which are critical to
the production and maintenanceof immune cells.
(20:51):
You hear that that is someserious stuff, so try to get
your zinc in.
So zinc is a vital, vital, vital, vital to your body.
So make sure you try to getsome zinc in your body as much
as you can, to help that numberone first line of defense, which
(21:12):
is your skin.
Let's talk about how you canrecognize the symptoms of a cold
and flu.
The common cold usually startsout with a sore throat, a runny
or stuffy nose, sneezing andcoughing and you feel a little
(21:35):
run down.
So those are the symptoms thatyou look for a lot of times.
When I'm coming home and I mythroat feels sore and I'm saying
, oh, oh my god, like why, why, what is I'm catching the cold,
that's the first thing I'll belike oh my god, I'm catching the
cold.
So the first thing I do is I goget some lemon and some honey
(22:00):
yes, I do, and I start theprocess of assisting and
boosting my immune system and Itry to get some rest.
Flu symptoms you have fever, feverish chills, which are very
serious because it seems likenothing can get you warm,
(22:22):
nothing.
I remember I had the worst fluof my life when I lived in
California.
I had to get off from work thatday.
It was flu and cold season.
Somebody must have came to work.
I don't know why People justcome they sick, stay home.
Somebody must have came to work.
I don't know why people justcome they sick, stay home.
So they'll come to work withthe cold or the flu.
(22:42):
And then I got it.
So I had to leave work early, pick up my son and we went to
Carl's Jr Because I knew Iwasn't going to be able to cook
anything for him.
I was too weak because I knew Iwasn't going to be able to cook
anything for him.
I was too weak, so we got thestar-shaped nuggets, some french
(23:05):
fries and a drink and I wasliving with my uncle at that
time, and it was it.
I'd never, ever want to see theflu like that again.
So I, so you got fever, thefeeling of fever, chills, cold,
sore, throat running and stuffynose, muscle and body aches
(23:26):
those hurt.
That's why, when you get yourvitamin cn, it has an
anti-inflammatory property to itthat will help you with your
muscle and body aches, reducingthe inflammation in your body.
Headaches and you are beyondworn out.
You are just wiped out, you're.
(23:47):
You just can't really do thatmuch.
So what do you do when you aretrying to treat these cold, the
cold or the flu.
Some of the some of theprevention.
So you already got the cold, you got the flu.
(24:08):
Let's talk about what can you doto prevent it or just try to
stay away from it.
Let's start with walking intothe house and washing your hands
.
My, my family already know thefirst thing you do when you come
in my, my, my, my home you washyour hands, wash your.
(24:31):
You can either go to thebathroom If somebody in the
bathroom, the kitchen is open goto the kitchen.
I do know some people that donot like to wash their hands in
the kitchen.
I just want your hands clean.
I'll wipe down the sink whenyou're done.
So just clean your hands, wipedown the sink when you're done,
(24:55):
so just just clean your hands.
Although I feel like this doesnot need to be said, but you
still got to tell people not torush head face in into seeing
somebody sick and then you'regonna go to the house.
No, don't go to the house.
Give them a call, see they'redoing.
Stop by in about three to fivedays.
If you see somebody sick, don'tgo.
(25:17):
Sit next to them.
They sitting there, coughingand sneezing.
They got a box of tissue, uh-uh, do not go sit next to them.
The first thing you do is youleave Okay, you out of here.
Let's talk about some homeremedies for the cold and flu.
Get plenty of rest and makesure you drink plenty of water.
(25:41):
Make sure you also having somenice warm liquids like broth,
teas and I get excited when Ihear teas and try to have a
humidifier in your room.
Close the door, turn on thehumidifier, because it just
(26:04):
makes you breathe better.
You get the vapor that's in theair and it helps you breathe
while you're trying to recoverfrom the cold or the flu
infection.
Now, I know that I don't wantto mention this, but I want to
talk about it real quick.
Sometimes people want to go towork.
They're trying to suppress someof these symptoms by taking
(26:30):
over-the-counter medicine.
So if that's your thing, do it.
I don't like over-the-countermedicine.
So if you, if that's your thing, do it.
I don't like over-the countermedicine.
I try to find natural ways to toheal, heal, to heal myself.
Or while I'm going through acold infection, I try to boost
my immune system as much aspossible.
I also use what they call umthe clear, like, if you're
(26:54):
trying to breathe, there's.
There's a natural way you cando the neti pots and the neti
pot is just some water and somesaline that they give you a
little neti pot and they giveyou like these little packs.
They give you like these littlepacks that you put in here and
(27:16):
you fill it up to wherever ittells you to fill it up to and
then you just you put it in yournose and do your thing.
It's a little messy, but Ireally do that.
It cleans out your sinusesnaturally and try to get you to
breathe again, because the worstthing is when you catch a cold
(27:36):
and one side is clogged up andthe other side is like dried up
and it hurts from breathing.
So that's that.
That's in place of over thecounter, I would try the natural
remedies by using a neti pot orboosting my immune system by
(27:57):
drinking warm fluids like brothsand teas.
Now, this is the end of myepisode.
I hope you really enjoyed itand I hope you got a lot of
information from this.
(28:18):
Boost your immune system, because we are in the cold and
flu season and I really wantedto bring this to you because I
feel like this is above andbeyond just the cold and flu
season.
