(00:00):
I don't think it's asurprise to anyone here
that goal-setting is a veryimportant part of personal
and professional development.
However, in my work I havefound that goal-setting can
be extremely overwhelming,sometimes disheartening,
and not really aseffective as it should be.
So today I'm super excited tobe sharing with you what I call

(00:22):
"four goal-setting businessquestions" to assist you in
setting some foundationalgoals that you can either
do just as those four goals, that's it, or as a foundation
for setting any and all goalsthat you wish to achieve.
Welcome back 10 Minutes to BeingBoss, a bite-sized show offering

(00:44):
up tips, tricks, and tacticsfor helping you do business.
I'm Emily Thompson andfor the past decade I have
helped creatives do business.
And in working with them suchpeople I have really been
able to see how difficultgoal-setting in its modern
iteration can be for creatives, especially, but also just for

(01:07):
business owners in general.
The modern tactics ofgoal-setting leave behind
people whose brains don'twork in, it's funny, they're
called SMART goals, sodon't work in smart ways?
That's not what I mean.
What I mean is that noteveryone sets goals the same.
So today I'm super excited toshare with you an alternative,

(01:31):
and not necessarily analternative, but really getting
it down to some very basic goalsthat I believe every business
owner should be setting forthemselves so that anything
else that you want to achievecan be achieved, or if you
do struggle with goal settingin general, these four small

(01:52):
foundational goals can be allthat you set for yourself.
And then you can go letyour creative energies
create in whatever way theyso choose without having
to worry about creatingmore goals for yourself.
But before I dive in, I do wantto mention today's sponsor.
We have had the pleasureof working with a Podia

(02:15):
for a very long time.
And in that time I havefound that creatives,
especially, really desireto share what it is that
they know with the world.
Podia is an all-in-oneplatform that allows you to
sell memberships, courses,and digital downloads.
And in the time that we havebeen partnering with Podia,

(02:36):
which is about 18 to 24 months, listen to this: bosses have
sold more than $2.26 millionworth of their expertise.
That number it makes me sohappy every time I think of it.
So if you are interested inteaching what it is that you
know, head over to Podia tolearn more about how you can use

(03:00):
their platform to do just that.
You can sign up for a 14day free trial, no credit
card required, and by goingto podia.com/boss you also
can get 15% off for life.
That's podia.com/boss.
Now let's dive into these fourgoal-setting business questions.

(03:23):
And I will say, because Itend to be a little bit extra,
this is also a worksheet.
And this is actually aworksheet that has been a part
of the Being Boss library ofworksheets, which has really
become quite a beast of athing for a really long time.
So, if you do want to snagthis worksheet, you can
go into the description orthe show notes, and there

(03:44):
will be a link to it there.
I'm going to be going over thesefour questions with you here,
so you can just write them down.
You don't need the worksheet, but there is some really
nice little fill in theblank sections of this
worksheet that you canalso get to by doing that.
But, let's dive in.
These four questions encompassmultiple facets of your work

(04:04):
and life, including yourmindset, your money, your
work life, and your growth.
So we're going to be talkingabout all four of those sections
of you and who you are andwho you want to be today.
So goal setting question, number one is around your
mindset, and that question is,very simply, I say it all the

time (04:26):
how do you want to feel?
At Being Boss we have talkedabout intention-setting, getting
in touch with how it is thatyou want to feel for years
because it is the foundation,I find, of both personal
and professional developmentthat allows you to enjoy the
process, not just the end goal.
So goal-setting question numberone, the first little goal,

(04:51):
foundational goal I want youto set for yourself is how
it is that you want to feel.
And as I mentioned, it's notjust at the end of the goal, but
it's every step along the way.
So do you want to feel happy?
Do you want to feel in control?
Do you want to feel aligned?
Do you want tofeel enthusiastic?
Take a moment, take a deepbreath, and get in touch with

(05:12):
how it is that you want to feel.
As I mentioned, we've talkedabout intention, setting a ton
here at Being Boss, so I willmake sure in the show notes
and in the description thatI include a couple of links
to some of that foundationalcontent where we have talked
about intention-setting, becauseit really is everything to
how it is that I set goalsand how it is able to do

(05:33):
everything that I'm able to do.
So, number one isaround your mindset:
how do you want to feel?
Number two is aroundyour money because we are
talking business here.
I will talk about feelingsfor a third of the day,
but the rest of the day, Ialways want to talk about
money, just so you know.
So your money number two is howmuch money do you want to make?

(05:57):
Now, I know for creatives, again, in particular, money
goals can be very difficultfor you to get in touch with,
but if you want to bridgethe gap between creative and
business owner or creative andentrepreneur, you need to get
comfortable with wanting moneyand with defining how much money
it is that you want to make.

(06:18):
So how it is that you dothis is completely up to you.
You can think about how muchmoney you want to make every
day, every week, every monthor every year, I do find
that the week and month tendsto be the easiest ones to
actually work towards, butsometimes people think very
easily about year or day.
You do however it is yourbrain needs you to do it.

(06:40):
Just define it for yourself.
And whenever you are definingit, make sure that it is
well-informed as well.
So your money goal needs toencompass your expenses, your
taxes, how much it is that youwant to get paid personally, how
much it is that you want to saveand saving up for retirement
and paying for all of yourinsurances, all of these things,

(07:01):
making sure that your moneygoal is very well informed.
Which then leadsus to goal-setting
question number three.
Number three isaround your work-life.
How many hours doyou want to work?
Plain and simple.
And again, this can, thisshould be catered to you
and how it is that you work.

(07:21):
If you have a day jobwith a side hustle,
define it in those terms.
If you are runningtwo businesses, define
it in those terms.
If you just want to run your onebusiness, but you want to work a
six hour workweek, more power toyou, define that for yourself.
I also, similar to numbertwo, want you to think about
this in terms of timeframes.

(07:42):
Are you wanting to definethis for every day, every
week, every month, every year, however it is that you best
work, do this for yourself.
How many hours doyou want to work?
Now, this is one that I want youto share with me, head down into
the comments and let me knowhow many hours it is that you
want to work, defined however itis that you want to define it.

(08:05):
Share it with others, andyou will find that the
path for you to achieve itbecomes that much more clear.
Now let's head into thefinal question: goal-setting
question number four, andthat is around your growth.
Oh, this one is always so hard.
Not necessarily, youneed to get used to it.

(08:26):
This one is around your growth.
Where will you seek help first?
Isn't that so crazyto think about?
I know, in particular, creativeshave a hard time with this,
though I also know thatprobably 80% of the business
owners that I know also justsincerely struggle with this.
Also women strugglewith this a lot.

(08:48):
Also men do.
Literally everyone struggleswith coming to terms with
the fact that they need helpand then identifying just
the help that they need.
And then, the hardest partyet, actually asking for
the help that you want.
So think about thesethings: where do you need
help in your business?
Where could you useadditional support?

(09:09):
Who will you choose tohelp you reach your goals?
Either the ones that you'vejust set for yourself or any
larger other goals that you aresetting for yourself, as well.
Get very clear with what helpyou need to make it all happen.
For me, I'll be sitting downwith my CEO Day later this

(09:29):
week and getting very clearon the health that I need
in both of my businesseshere at Almanac Supply Co
and also at Being Boss.
And this is one of those musclesthat you just have to flex.
You just have to keep onusing it until it is strong
and you don't even thinkabout using it anymore.
So there you have it, fourgoal-setting business questions

(09:51):
that you can use in yourbusiness to set base line goals
and expectations for how youwant to operate moving forward.
I like to keep these updatedvery consistently in my
business so that I alwaysknow how many hours I'm
wanting to work, because itchanges from season to season.
I always need to get reallyclear with who it is that I'm

(10:12):
going to hire next, or what helpit is that I need to seek out.
Be very clear about these andeither these can be the only
goals that you have set andkeep going for your business,
or they serve as a very firmfoundation on which you can
set any other goals that youwant to achieve for yourself.
And with these defined, thosegoals will be easier and more

(10:35):
aligned as you achieve them.
And with that, that's it.
You have them.
Thank you so much for comingto hang out with me, and thank
you so much for all of thereally great, amazing feedback
that you've given me as I haveembarked on this new version
of 10 Minutes to Being Boss.
I very much so appreciate youbeing here and you telling me
that you think I'm funny andthat you like seeing my face.

(10:58):
That's kind of weirdto me; I also really
love it, so thank you.
I will see you next time.
And until then, dothe work be boss.
