Leadership doesn't have to be complicated or time-consuming to master. That's the foundational belief behind the 12-Minute Leadership Podcast, where small, practical changes can dramatically improve your leadership effectiveness and transform your team dynamics.

After witnessing the devastating effects of poor leadership firsthand and spending 17 years helping thousands of leaders develop their skills, I've distilled the art of leadership into bite-sized, actionable wisdom. Why? Because leadership matters profoundly. When 57% of employees quit because of their managers, and only a quarter of corporate training budgets target leadership development, we face a critical skills gap that affects engagement, performance, and retention across organizations everywhere.

This podcast bridges theory and practice, offering concrete strategies you can implement immediately. Whether you're listening during your commute, while cooking dinner, or during a workout, these 12 minutes will deliver a remarkable return on investment. For leaders feeling burdened by responsibility, this podcast offers a path back to confidence and joy. For those already thriving, it provides continuous growth opportunities on your leadership journey. After all, great leadership isn't just about creating followers—it's about developing more leaders.

(00:47):
.
12 Minutes starts now.
Hi everyone, elise here, andwelcome to episode one 12
Reasons why I Started thisPodcast.
Before I start, I wanna saythat the idea to start a podcast
has been many years in themaking, but I'm actually glad
I'm starting this podcast now.

(01:07):
Over the last couple of yearsin particular, I've learned a
lot and I'm excited to share itwith you.
So let's get started.
Reason number one why I startedthis podcast Leadership is my
calling.
I love leading teams, coachingindividual leaders to success
and helping organizations createeffective leadership

(01:30):
development strategies andprograms.
After experiencing poorleadership early in my career.
I went on a mission to learneverything I could about
effective leadership.
I learned what works and havemade it my life's work to help
technically competent leaderslearn the art of leadership.
I learned what works and havemade it my life's work to help
technically competent leaderslearn the art of leadership so
they can achieve their desiredresults through their teams.

(01:52):
I want leaders to enjoy leadingand be effective in doing so.
I love being a hope dealer forleaders, helping them turn
difficult situations around bydeveloping the right skill set.
All right.
Reason number two leaders matter.
Leadership expert and authorJohn Maxwell says that

(02:13):
everything rises and falls onleadership.
In my experience, leadershipimpacts three areas in
particular engagement,performance and retention.
You may have heard the sayingpeople join organizations but
leave bosses.
One survey found that 57% ofpeople have quit their jobs

(02:36):
because of their managers andanother 32% have considered
leaving because of them.
So leadership matters, allright.
Reason number three leadershipis often not taught.
We didn't learn it alongsideour technical training in school
, and leadership is the kind ofthing that's often more caught

(02:56):
than taught.
If you had a great leader, youcan emulate them.
If you didn't have such a goodleader, then you try to do the
opposite.
A recent Forbes Coaches Councilarticle notes that in 2020,
organizations worldwide spentapproximately $357 billion on
corporate training, but only 25%of that went to leadership

(03:19):
development programs.
So not only are we not learningit in school, but it's not
being sharpened within ourorganizations.
We get promoted because we'retechnically competent, but
leading a team is a completelydifferent skill set.
All right reason number fourLeaders don't need books in

(03:41):
theory.
They need practical application.
You could read lots of books,go to conferences and get a
degree in leadership, but thatwill only teach you theory and I
believe in all of this.
I've done it but it has to becoupled with repetitive practice
and feedback, much like a chefperfecting a dish.
Chefs don't become experts justby reading a recipe in a

(04:03):
cookbook.
This podcast will give youactions you can take right away
that are going to make anoticeable difference in your
effectiveness as a leader.
You can find the real storiesof leaders I've worked with in
my new book Lead Anyone, available on Amazon.
All right reason number fiveleaders give In.

(04:23):
This podcast you get to receive.
I'm confident that this will bea place you look forward to
coming to each week to getsolutions to your most common
leadership challenges.
I'll be engaging some of myfavorite leaders along the way
as well to share theirperspectives and wisdom.
All right.
Reason number six leaders arebusy.

(04:44):
This podcast is 12 minutes offocused, practical wisdom 12
minutes or less, that is.
Today's episode is a kickoffepisode, so it's going to be
shorter than the other episodes, but I promise no episode will
be longer than 12 minutes and ifyou put what you learn into
practice, I can promise a returnon the investment of that 12
minutes.

(05:04):
So listen on your way to work, listen while you're cooking
dinner, while you're walkingyour dog, while you're working
out.
I think that you'll find thatthat 12 minutes was well spent,
all right.
Reason number seven to make thenuanced complexity of leadership
simple and straightforward.
Let me repeat that To make thenuanced complexity of leadership

(05:28):
simple and straightforward.
So think of this podcast as thecliff notes of the best
leadership advice.
I've taken the complexity andthe nuance of leadership and
I've made it straightforward, simple and actionable.
Reason number eight leadershipcan be lonely at times.
This will be a place wherecommon challenges are normalized

(05:50):
and proven solutions are given.
Reason number nine leadershipis learned over time.
It's not a one and done so thispodcast will give you a
consistent place to go, to comeand invest in yourself.
I'll also provide you withopportunities beyond the podcast
to go deeper along the way.

(06:12):
Reason number 10 of why Istarted this podcast leaders are
born and made.
We always have to keep learningand improving ourselves.
Our teams can function despiteus, but have the potential to
thrive because of us.
If we want to create learningcultures, we have to be
continually learning ourselves.

(06:33):
This is a place to do that.
Reason number 11.
This podcast is for leaders whoare struggling and want to enjoy
leading again, or maybe for thefirst time.
If being a leader has become aduty and a despised
responsibility rather than a joy, it doesn't have to be that way
.
This podcast will provide youwith essential principles and

(06:56):
tools that will make adifference in how effective you
are as a leader.
If you are effective as aleader, I guarantee a sense of
confidence and joy will follow.
Guarantee a sense of confidenceand joy will follow.
Reason number 12, for leaderswho are thriving.
Maybe you are already thrivingas a leader, but, as most
leaders know, leadership is alifelong journey.

(07:19):
We're constantly leadingourselves in new places so that
we can lead others that followus.
And, by the way, most of usknow by now that being a good
leader isn't just about creatingfollowers, it's creating more
leaders.
This podcast is going to equipyou on how to coach and create a
deep leadership benchmark.

(07:39):
So, with that said, those arethe 12 reasons that I started
this podcast, and I'm reallyexcited to share what I've
learned with you.
So I hope you enjoyed today'sepisode.
Join me for part two of the 12things kickoff series continuing
