SPEAKER_03 (00:00):
All right, how are we starting this off?
I'm so excited.
I'm excited too.
You guys, it's our 50th episode.

(00:21):
Okay, 5-0.
The big 5-0 over the hill.
50 episodes.
This is our midlife crisis.
Oh, I feel like it's a crisis.
I feel like it's a crisis offabulous, incredible work.
I feel like it's a recognitionof 49 fucking insane movies
watched.

(00:41):
I feel like it is labor.
Our labor.
49 episodes.
It's not our labor.
I'm going to take that back.
It's also not 49 movies becausewe've done three recap episodes.
So it's 46 movies.
Oh my god, it's 46 movies.
That's still insane.
That's a lot of movies, youguys.

(01:03):
How many good ones?
Six?
Yeah, and that's part of theride.
And if you've been with us forthis long, holy shit, you guys.
You know, I would say there'sbeen more good movies than I
thought there were going to bewhen we started.
I've been pleasantly surprisedon several occasions, I would
say.
We've had so much fun and It's alot of work.

(01:26):
And if you're listening everyweek, you know that we are just,
we're breaking a sweat.
We're saying that we need tobring this to the masses.
Like, like the fans won't stop.
We'll never stop begging formore content.
Yeah.
And we're here to deliver.
Actually, like you guys werelost and then we found you in
the dark.
We found you.
We found you.
Don't worry.

(01:46):
Welcome back.
50 episodes.
This is a very special episode.
We have a lot planned for youguys and we're actually
downright giddy to get into it.
First of all, a littlebackground on us.
Yeah, we asked you guys what youwanted to hear from the 50th
episode, and a lot of peoplesaid they wanted to hear about
us.
Oh my god, can you believe?
I can't believe.
I know us, and you guys don'twant to hear that much.

(02:08):
It makes perfect sense to me.
We actually are just endlesslyfascinating.
If you listen, you know wherewe're from.
We grew up in Louisville,Kentucky, correctly pronounced
Louisville, but...
Not everyone knows that, youknow?
Well, if you listen to thispodcast, you do, because we had
the 20-minute rant about it inthe Elizabethtown episode.

(02:28):
I'm two years older than Jordan.
I was born in 1992.
Jay was born in 94.
So we're pretty young for a lotof these titles.
We have an older sibling.
Shout out to Morgan.
Who I think was bringing a lotof them into that.
Yes.
And I think if you have an oldersibling, you can probably relate
that you're going to get alittle pieces of the generation
prior based on what they watch.

(02:49):
Because you're emulating.
You're always looking upwhatever.
Jordan obviously obsessed withme.
I was her idol.
She just wanted to be exactlylike me.
Which listeners can understand.
I think you can tell from thepodcast.
But...
It's not very many years apart.
So it really is like major, major overlap in what we

(03:09):
watched.
It was.
Also, it's just like, you knowwhat I mean?
It was the 90s.
There was one TV.
There was one house.
We were in the same housewatching the same content.
Yeah.
OK, so I when we started thispodcast was living in Los
Angeles and Jay was living herein New York, had been for a few
years.
Do you guys remember thepandemic?

(03:29):
Yeah, that's what I was going tosay is like we didn't release
the podcast until about twoyears after we like concepted it
and started recording.
So like you may not know this, but it was originally concepted
to be like, like we're stuckindoors, like a pandemic
podcast.
It was a COVID baby.
It was literally a COVID baby.
Our podcast was a COVID baby.
Because she was in LA and I wasin New York and we truly were

(03:50):
like, you can't talk to anybodyelse and we aren't going to be
able to see each other for whoknows how long.
And you just ran out of contentto watch is the truth.
Like it was just like we didTiger King.
We did Outer Banks.
Like what are we going to watch?
but also it was like I don'thave anything to do at night
like I'm stuck in my apartmentI'm like looking at these four

(04:12):
walls and I need something tolook forward to and we were like
no one is talking about thissubset of stuff from when we
were kids and there are likeshout out to the other podcasts
that we're talking about MaryKate and Ashley our first season
and our arguably most belovedseason we'll get into it and we
were like let's talk about MaryKate and Ashley they're hard to
find they're hard to stream buteveryone remembers and so sure

(04:33):
we had like run out of movies towatch yeah and we were like we
need to really delve deep intoour psyches and figure out like
what we need to find out how tostream passport to paris yeah
and we did not i speaking formyself i was like paris was the
easy one to find yes i was likei don't want to do them as
babies but once we got throughthe pre-teen years and there was

(04:54):
a demand for the baby that's noteven true i don't know if you
remember i mean like I don'tknow if you remember this, but
we did literally start withDouble Double Toil and Trouble.
It's the first one we watched.
And that's actually why youdidn't get the podcast until two
years later.
Because I was like, I can't.
Because it was so bad and wewere like, we need to take a
break.
From the Vault A year ago, Juneof 2024 to New York, and now we

(05:44):
do the show together.
Together.
Together here in the city.
It's so fun.
It's much more.
I don't know if you guys cantell the difference between when
we were on different coasts andwhen we were together, but I
feel like it is much more fun todo it together than it was to do
it across different coasts.
I think it's so much more fun.
Yeah.
And literally, you guys, sometimes we still do it
remotely.
If it's just like we'd betraveling, we'd be busy.

(06:06):
Sometimes it'd be 8 p.m.
But it's a lot more fun torecord together more
consistently for sure.
So it's been...
two and a half years almostit'll be three in March which is
crazy 50 episodes I guess I knowI guess so like this is what
like they felt like when theydid like five seasons of this CW

(06:28):
show I'm picturing the Dawson'sCreek 100 episode cake like
right now I'm picturing JoshuaJackson wearing the photo of
Meredith Monroe on his t-shirtbecause she was not invited to
the 100th episode party andthat's lore that like you just
need to know maybe that's gonnaend up on second thoughts who
knows It's been two and a halfyears.
We've done four seasons.
A little bit of insight intoselection.

(06:50):
We knew we were going to doFreddie Prinze Jr.
right after.
a few episodes deep into DualStar Diaries knew we wanted to
do Friday Prince Jr.
What's interesting about that isthere was like a market shift
sort of in like the audiencebeing like rabid for content and
we have to conclude it's becauseit was a boy.

(07:10):
Like we were like he was theheartthrob of our childhood but
it's like this content is forthe girls and I think we're
learning that with every season.
What you guys like to see alittle bit more.
I also think like it's sointeresting to do different
headliners because it's like itreally does change the entire
vibe of the show each season.
With Mary-Kate and Ashley, itwas a lot of watching movies

(07:33):
that were not good.
And were not for kids.
I mean, they were not foradults.
That were for kids.
That were not for adults.
So it's like the shift towatching a really iconic,
classic, cult fave.
Like an in-theaters blockbuster.
Yeah, movie was big.
But I also think Freddie PrinzeJr.
had...
it wasn't all the same type ofmovie the way it was with

(07:56):
Mary-Kate and Ashley and thatmade there be like a lot more
peaks and valleys kind of in thecontent where it was like this
movie is I know what you didlast summer this is like a real
fucking movie it's good like Iwant to talk about it I want to
watch it versus like WingCommander where you're like I
don't want to watch it I don'twant to talk about it and nobody
else has seen it that's going tochange like kind of the content

(08:17):
that's coming out whereasMary-Kate and Ashley content was
all very cohesive it was its ownuniverse it was a closed
universe and I think withFreddie you get like she's all
that yeah and you then can alsodiscuss like the cultural
moments that were happening atthe time and like the famous
celebrities and the Paul Walkerof it all and Rachel Lee Cook
and whoever the universe was somuch bigger with Freddie yeah in

(08:37):
a way that you don't really getwith Mary-Kate and Ashley and
that's fine I think Mary-Kateand Ashley is our closed little
heart people responded to it somuch I will say I have a soft
spot for the Freddie seasonbecause the like recording
equipment got better we got alittle more like locked in with
like the art and the promo andstuff so I will have a soft spot

(08:58):
for Freddie I think the likebiggest star we've done so far
to me is season three KirstenDunst yeah for sure uh every
single movie on the KirstenDunst season um is good iconic
yeah but I do think there's beena little bit of a return to form

(09:19):
with season four we've neverdone two headliners before it's
mostly because like we didn'tfeel we could fill fill out a
full season with either one ofthem and they both sort of
occupied a similar timeline andlisten this is all experimental
like we're making this up andyou guys we have more concept
seasons planned that are evenwackier than Mandy Mania but

(09:40):
like it has been so fun to goback and forth and kind of get a
break from one one of them.
Oh, totally.
But still be like we're very2004.
It's the very same timeline.
It feels like kind of the sameera.
And I do feel like it's been areturn to sort of the like made
for kids girly pop teen teenmovie genre of like the
Mary-Kate and Ashley so it'slike season four is very special

(10:01):
to me too I love every movie onthe list for season four yeah I
feel like in terms of how wepick who the headliner is gonna
be like it's truly not some likecrazy equation it's really just
like we think of movies that weloved as kids and then we were
like and then we're like what dothey have in common what do they
have in common yeah who's inthem and then once you remember
that like she's all that hasFreddie in it you're like wait a

(10:24):
second also boys and girls hasfreddie prince jr in it like
yeah let's watch this fuckingmovie and to be clear like it's
not always going to be centeredaround like an actor or
something.
Like some of the thoughts thatwe have, like we can categorize
movies from our childhood in alot of different ways.
You guys should be, our brainsare big and we can come up with
all kinds of categories forthat.
I mean, yeah.
The only thing we're going tostay true to is movies.

(10:46):
We want to watch movies.
We watched as kids.
Yeah.
I mean like to me, what'srewarding about this whole
format is this is what wethought this movie was about.
We were wrong or we were right.
And like, yeah, we were just,Yeah.

(11:18):
Especially when you're talkingabout a time where those
conversations just were notbeing had like they're being had
now is just fun to like go backand analyze.
It's just a blast.
Or it's like not even that theyweren't being had, but that the
conclusions being drawn werewrong.
Different.
Yeah.
We're just different.
And I do think it is a specifictime where we had more media
than we've ever had before.
Like when we were young, but westill only had like one channel

(11:42):
of media.
So everybody was still, we stillhad like monoculture, but like
more of it than ever before.
So it could really like shapeyou as a person, as evidenced by
us as adults.
Yeah.
Anyone that knows us knows weknow every single thing there is
to know about everything oh yeahlike and you guys can tell by
the merch that we're releasingfor the 50th episode but it's

(12:04):
like six degrees of kevin baconis like get me in front of a
trivia team like i'll blow yourmind i can name any actor in any
movie yeah so true okay speakingof um we can talk a little bit
about merch that's dropping it'sthe 50th episode you can go
online and you can get key artfrom any of the four seasons on
a t-shirt on a tote whatever ifyou guys want that sort of thing

(12:25):
i like it on a tote personallyfor sure i'm gonna carry my
stuff around it pick yourfavorite favorite season we know
which one's your favorite seasonput it on a tote Connor does all
of the key art she works reallyhard on it it's beautiful and
you're gonna want it on yourtote yeah for sure um you can
also get our very special 50thepisode merch that has the six
degrees of separation of all ofthe headliners from all of the

(12:45):
seasons and I'm gonna let Jayread out the connection because
your mind is about to be blown Icannot believe we pulled it off
with only one actor in betweeneach headliner we've connected
all of them like 20 minutes yeahand I I want you to know Connor
tried to type it into ChatGVTand I got it before ChatGVT got
it.
No, honestly, I wanted a raisefrom the record that I tried to

(13:06):
use ChatGVT for this becauselike, This is why they'll never
replace human beings, becauseyou can't teach a computer the
things my brain knows fromwatching as much television.
You can't beat me.
I can't be beat.
Absolutely.
So let her rip.
Here we go.
The six degrees of secondshowing are Mary-Kate and Ashley
Olsen are in Holiday in the Sunwith Austin Nichols, who's in

(13:27):
Wimbledon with Kirsten Dunst, who's in Strike.
with Rachel Leigh Cook, who's inShe's All That with Freddie
Prinze Jr., who's in Boys andGirls with Amanda Detmer, who's
in Big Fat Liar with AmandaBynes, who's in Hairspray with
Allison Janney, who's in How toDeal with Mandy Moore.
Incredible.
You guys, it is a closeduniverse.
And like, if you're coming alongwith us, you're one of us,

(13:49):
you're in the universe and youget it.
And it can't be explained topeople that aren't in the
universe and they just need adeal.
We're going to put that on ashirt.
You can buy it Only people thatknow know.
Only people that listen to thepod will get it.
You can also, as always, get ourfavorite underrated Ashley
comedian, Mary Kate.
Dad caps are still availableonline.
There's some past art.

(14:11):
you know all that she's all thatin a falafel hat a personal
favorite we are going to talk alittle bit about what's on the
patreon this is going to be sofunny because i was like we can
post the unedited video of thisand maybe we will there's going
to be video clips from theepisode we are filming ourselves
record this can you believesomething we truly hate to do
and yet we're doing it for youfor the 50th episode subscribe

this week.
We're going to have a littlecelebration celebrating the 50th
episode this Friday.
Mm

SPEAKER_05 (14:45):
hmm.

SPEAKER_03 (14:45):
We are going to interview mom and dad about what
they remember about us watchingsome of these movies.
Those clips will be available onthe Patreon.
That should be a riot.
It should be absolutely insane.
As some of you guys know, themovie Elizabethtown from season
three was filmed in ourhometown.
Our parents have a lot ofmemories of that.
They also do listen to the show, which I hope does not shock you.
That should give you someinsight into how cool and hip

(15:07):
our parents are.
Actually, our biggest fans.
They do listen to the show.
Don't go on Spotify and counthow many times our mom has
commented.
It's a lot.
They're going to talk abouttheir favorite episode of the
show.
I think they've already told usthat we swear too much.
They don't like that.
Yeah, there have been somenotes.
But honestly, mostly positive.
They're happy.
Yeah.

(15:27):
Lastly, we have been workinghard on a playlist of all the
needle drops over the course ofthe last four seasons or three
and a half seasons.
And frankly...
It's a banger after banger.
Yeah.
It's 50 tracks for our 50episodes.
It's the best songs from thesoundtracks of the movies.
You guys know we really likeflip out when there's like a

(15:48):
really good needle drop.
So we have created a playlistfor you.
You can get it on the Patreon.
We are going to make itavailable to you.
We are going to make itavailable to you.
And you guys should definitelycheck it out because it rips.
And then lastly, speaking ofFreddy, you guys may have seen
that they are remaking or comingout with a new I Know What You
Did Last Summer.
Yeah.
We are going to do a review ofthat new movie.

(16:10):
We're going to put it on thePatreon.
You can subscribe and listen toit.
But you can't hear it anywhereelse.
Nope.
Yeah.
We're going to make it similarto the third Spider-Man movie.
We're going to make it availableon Patreon.
And you're going to be able tobuy it if you don't want to
subscribe.
But you should subscribe becausethere's going to be a lot of
other good stuff that we justnamed.
Yes.
And then lastly, lastannouncement before we get into

(16:31):
all the fun stuff we haveplanned.
We are going to host a littleget together at the Rialto Grand
in Brooklyn.
On Franklin Ave.
On Franklin Ave on Friday night.
Yes.
Friday, July 18th in Brooklyn.
Come and say hey if you want.
We've invited all our friends.
Our parents will be there.
We're just going to have alittle sip, a little drink, a

(16:52):
little toast to 50 episodes.
We're excited, you guys.
Honestly, if anyone shows up andwalks up to us and is like, I
listened to the show, I'llabsolutely kiss you on the
mouth.
And that's a promise.
That's a promise.
OK, so.
OK.
Connor.
put up some social polls oh yeahthis is so I was so excited okay
you guys like stay telling mewhat the fuck you think about

(17:13):
what the fuck I think and it'scrazy because I would not have
expected I wanted any feedbackon what I thought I'm rabid to
know but I love when you guyslike this is an insane take you
guys are wild for this and it'slike I'm willing to engage like
one thing about me I'm not gonnalike absolutely 10 toes down on
basically anything but also Ifeel like I'm like I didn't say
it and then send it to you foryou to listen to because I

(17:35):
didn't want to talk about it nono I invite you to be like,
bitch, you're crazy for thisone.
And then I'll be like, actually, maybe, you know what I mean?
So I did put up some polls.
We wanted to know what you guysthought.
The best season.
We want to know what yourfavorite season is.
49% of you.
Said season one.

(17:56):
You guys are really MKNA heads.
Yeah.
And I won't lie.
I am surprised to hear that alittle bit.
Like just because I personallyfeel like the quality has gotten
a lot better as we've gonealong.
To go back and listen to them.
It sounds like we're like in ourcloset at home and we are.
I was in my closet for severalepisodes.
And it's like the mics we wereusing were like absolutely

(18:17):
bottom grade.
Mostly it's like I get it.
For all the reasons we talkedabout before, it's a closed
universe.
They're so nostalgic.
And genuinely, a lot of themwere really fun to watch.
And I do kind of think you guyslike it a little bit better when
the movies aren't as good.
Also, they're niche, I think.
I think there's other podcastsout there where someone's like,
let's rewatch She's All That.

(18:39):
Sure.
Yeah.
It's kind of niche to be like, were you there?
Which is what surprises mebecause I would think the other
audiences maybe have widerappeal.
Although it must be said, someof those Freddie Prinze Jr.
movies are hard to find.
Head over heels.
Good luck streaming that.
Yeah.
Good luck.
And you know what?
For good reason.
I mean, I'm not surprised.
That's your favorite season.
20% of you said Kirsten Dunst.

(19:00):
That was the runner up.
That was a good season.
20% of you said this season thatwe're in, which is very
exciting.
We love that you're loving whatwe're doing now.
Absolutely.
Poor Freddie did get the leastlove.
And as I mentioned, it's thepods for the girls.
But we're going to get in.
You guys have suggested some newpeople.
And I was surprised to see boyson the list.
But overwhelmingly, you guyswant girl headliners.
And who could blame you,frankly?
it's about girlhood I do thinkit makes sense to me too that

(19:24):
it's like that was our firstthat was the inception was
Mary-Kate and Ashley like we'resisters they're sisters it's
childhood like it is the purestlike expression of the form also
if you guys have been aroundsince the beginning you might
remember before we even launchedthe podcast we went sort of
viral just dropping the list ofmovies we were gonna talk about
we put a video up on TikTokbefore the episodes came out

(19:44):
that were like we're launchingthis podcast these are the
movies this is the time frame ithappened in and it hit like
almost a million views withabsolutely no we didn't have any
content for anyone to see weweren't anybody so people were
hungry for the content that isclear and it's still the
favorite season I think you guysshow your love I think you guys
really demand more MK&A contentby buying underrated Ashley and

(20:08):
comedian Mary Kate hats and thenwe'll know truly if we need to
revisit I will say like I toowould love more Mary Kate and
Ashley content and you guys needto talk to Mary Kate and Ashley
I know that has nothing to dowith us That's what I'm saying.
We're out of movies, fam.
It has nothing to do with us.
Make more movies.
There is a show I want to shoutout called They Thought I Was

(20:29):
You.
And they have nothing to do withus.
They get tagged in our stuffsometimes.
They haven't in a while nowbecause we've moved away from
Mary-Kate and Ashley.
But if you're looking for reallydeep dive stuff...
They are going crazy.
They're finding every singlemagazine where their names were
printed in.
They're finding fan pages thathave been taken down for 20
years.

(20:49):
So go on it.
We're happy to shoot them somelistenership because they're
doing work we're frankly justnot doing.
We're not willing to do.
We're movies only on the mainfeed.
We really are here to just talkour shit and have our own
opinions.
And we, if you listen, you knowwe're not big research heads.
That couldn't be further fromthe truth about them.
So get your fill over there.

(21:10):
Yeah.
Yeah.

(21:33):
Two episodes ago, we did theShe's the Man recap.
And I think maybe it's justfresh in people's minds.
Yeah, I am thinking that too.
And it's so, so funny thathonestly, I feel like when I
listen back to that episode,it's just us being like, this is
so fucking funny.
This is so funny.
This is such a good line.
It was so funny.
She's the movie people loved.
Another fan favorite episode, Iwas not surprised, is Sucks to

(21:54):
be Spidey, our Spider-Man toreview.
Because that is like...
literally the best you guys evermade and I we had so much fun
doing that episode too it's it'sreally nice to see that a lot of
your all's favorite episodes arethe episodes that we had the
most yeah recording I will saypassport to Paris from season
one is my favorite oh my godthat's such a good episode yeah

(22:14):
and what is it called preteenswith passports yeah and it's
really short and fast and werecorded it together that was
the first one we ever didtogether I flew out to LA yeah
and it is so funny still tolisten back to but The sort of
honorable mentions, a couplethat you guys said that weren't
the top two, Holiday and theSlammer, which we hated that

(22:37):
movie.
We hated that movie.
And it really took us bysurprise.
Yeah, yeah.
I was like, okay.
So I think people like when werip these movies up.
I think they do too, yeah.
You guys should go listen to theFreddie Prinze Jr.
season.
Someone else said, Down toShampoo absolutely cannot be
beat.
Oh, wow.
So our review, it was atwo-parter, Down to You.
That was a huge movie for us.
Yeah, that was our winningLondon, one of our winnings.

(22:58):
Yeah.
Yeah.

(23:19):
isn't a favorite episode of mineto listen back to.
Yeah.
But it is like that when wereference when we're like, this
is a Winning London episode.
It just it means that it's ourfavorite movie from this season.
The Winning London episode islike the movie that made us
think we should find othermovies by this headline.
Yeah, yeah.
And we should make this thisseason.
Yeah.
So it's like...

(23:40):
It's so funny that you say that.
I would love to know what youthink of as like your favorite
movie to your favorite episodethat we've done, because I is I
think Passport to Paris is oneof my most favorite.
OK, I can do one from eachseason.
Passport to Paris is my favoriteone from season one.
The two parter, the first twoepisodes.
I know you did last summer.

(24:01):
Yeah.
Yeah.
The two parter from season two.
Mm hmm.
And then, although I'm sure Downto Shampoo is really funny to
listen back to, I don't knowthat I've ever listened back to
it.
Man, season three has to be...
elizabethtown it's gotta be itwas just so fun to make and and
it's just it's gotta be i agreei think passport to paris in the

(24:23):
first season was the first timewe like hit our stride and that
felt really good and it wasreally fun to listen back to
yeah um season two honestly youguys i've listened to the wing
commander episode several timesand it's funny oh my god that's
so funny i never hated thatmovie so much and it doesn't
make any since the beginning ofthat episode is me going if
anyone ever makes me talk aboutthis movie ever again and that's

(24:46):
why I've never listened to itit's really funny that's so
funny it's really funny but thenyeah I've also really sorry I
know it's like so lame to saythat you like listen to her own
podcast but I have listened tothis I just want to hear what
you have to say I don't evenlisten to

SPEAKER_05 (24:58):
myself

SPEAKER_03 (25:01):
and I've listened to the Elizabeth town episode a
couple times Elizabeth townepisode is like you guys so
moving I had my I like came backto New York I was in LA when we
recorded that episode and I wejust watched it and I was like
doing laundry at a girlfriend'shouse and I was like babe have
you ever seen this I was likebabe clock in have you ever seen
this movie it was filmed in myhometown and we watched it again

(25:22):
not even two weeks after wewatched it for the show and she
and I like both cried and I waslike there are faults with it I
understand why it's not in thelike canon of like great
rom-coms or whatever but thenalso I don't understand actually
I don't I actually don't knowwhy it's not remembered I think
you guys aren't giving it it'sdue I think I watched it.
I had a friend in town with mewhen we were recording that

(25:43):
episode.
My friend Chelsea.
My number one hype woman.
And she watched it with me.
And we were both crying at theSusan Sarandon thing.
And I was like, it's not justme.
It's not just people fromLouisville.
Not like us is a line thatliterally...
I could write a dissertation.
Okay, people's favorite moviesthat we talked about, to no

(26:04):
one's surprise, they areconnected to the people's
favorite episodes to listen backto.
She's the Man was people'sfavorite movie that they
overwhelmingly said.
Why is it so...
It's our generationspecifically.
I could show that movie to a45-year-old man and they'd be
like, you're rotted in the head.
I don't think so.
I just don't think so.
That movie is funny.
That movie is funny.
It is funny, but you had to bethere.

(26:24):
I do think you had to be there.
I think you had to be raised onAmanda Bynes.
You had to know what she wasdoing.
you had to say, I've never seenChanning Tatum before, but I
must see more of him.
Like, you had to be there.
I do think that.
Because that movie isbuh-fucking-nanas.
It's fucking hilarious.
And it's like, you know what?
People are out here like ChrisFarley, like Will Ferrell, blah,
blah, blah.
And it's like, this movie isjust funny.

(26:45):
And I actually think it's ourown limiting beliefs making us
think that, like, you've got tohave some special girly, like,
you know, plug-in into thisuniverse when it's like, no,
quality is quality.
And this movie is quality.
high high quality it's reallygood also Spider-Man 2 is one of
your all's favorite movies thatyou submitted that's obvious I
mean that's just in terms ofcritical acclaim like yeah you

(27:09):
guys know but also A Walk toRemember was on this list yeah I
remember we had a comment fromsomebody when that episode came
out that said she watched it orthey watched it she listened to
the episode four times and I waslike what that does to my heart
is like indescribable I couldn'tlisten like that's crazy to us
our little chit chat four timesokay we love you we know you you

(27:29):
are yeah um a watch remember isit's fun it's fun as hell it's
fun to re-watch yeah yeah we hada big time um okay best
heartthrob i mean god you guysget it thank god because i was
like we can't do him like thiswhen he's already the lowest
ranked season there's only oneanswer freddie prince jr is the
best heartthrob and you guysthank god you stood on business

(27:51):
on this one i really thought youwere gonna embarrass him you
guys i know but there are tworunners up oh That were
mentioned a lot.
Not as much as Freddie.
But you guys submitted twopeople.
This is going to surprise noone.
It's Josh Hartnett from TheVirgin Suicides.
And Shane West from A Walk toRemember.
Who, like, Shane West in A Walkto Remember maybe is the biggest

(28:12):
upset.
Like, the biggest surprise.
Not that he's an underdog, but Ijust didn't remember how
incredible he is in it.
I don't like what it says aboutus as a culture that Tripp
Fontaine is...
somebody that we're like i knowmessing up it like after we
re-watched that and the way hedid her i don't which is ironic
that you say that because ournext poll which jay who's your

(28:33):
favorite heartthrob it'sobviously jay it's like besides
i'm curious it's like um yeahit's like i feel like it's got
to be shane west i know i'lltell you oh okay um mine's like
no question either Oh, yours isPaul Bettany from Wimbledon?
No, but I mean, you guys knowhow I feel about Paul Bettany.

(28:53):
He does like a weird thing tome, but it's not Paul Bettany.
Although it's close.
I'm trying to think because it'slike a part of me really wants
to pick.
I just want to pick someone fromMary Kate Ashley.
Jesse Spencer from WinningLondon.
Oh, bry, bry.
Rye, Rye.

(29:13):
You know we love Rye, Rye.
Rye, Rye.
I'm winning London.
I mean, Tobey Maguire.
No, absolutely not TobeyMaguire.
Jay.
It's Michael Moskowitz.
I know.
I'm not a Michael Moskowitzgirl.
I know.
It's all from the book, too.
You guys came at me about thedifference between the movies
and the books, and I want you toknow I don't care.

(29:34):
We care about you sometimes.
I care about your ideas deeply.
I'm right about every singlePrincess Diaries opinion that I
have.
We only sometimes care.
If you guys disagree with us,we're like, cool.
That's cute.
That's funny.
Okay.
The next poll is Best Bad Guy.
And the number one winner fromBest Bad Guy is my runner up
after FPJ for Heartthrob.
And it is Paul Walker from She'sAll That.

(29:57):
Oh, yeah.
It's got to be Paul Walker.
He...
is the boyfriend of thispodcast.
And I can't, Jay, is he in morethan one movie?
I feel like we're constantlytalking about Paul Walker.
It's like, I think, I don'tthink so.
But he is in other movies whenwe do the context corner.
It's always like, this moviejust came out and Paul Walker's
in it.
And I feel like he's got to bein a Kirsten Dunst movie and

(30:18):
we're just not remembering.
No, Paul Walker is a bad, badguy.
He's a bad dude, but honestly,he adds layers to that movie.
I was shocked.
And interestingly enough, ourrunner-up best bad guy is also
our runner-up for bestheartthrob, Mr.
Josh Hartman.
This feels like where he shouldbe.
Yeah, Tripp Fontaine from VirginSuicide is a real bad guy.
Yeah.
And he's our runner-up afterPaul Walker.

(30:39):
But I would argue Paul Walker isworse.
More insidious, like, constantlyviolent.
Yeah.
Paul Walker has a desire to beevil.
Tripp has a moron problem.
Yeah, it's like he's just notthinking about other people,
which is not good, but it's lessinsidious.
Yeah.

(30:59):
Who's your best bad guy?
My favorite bad guy is Gobby.
It's definitely...
Gobby.
Willem Dafoe.
Yeah, my favorite bad guy is100% Willem Dafoe's cunty little
walk towards the mirror whilehe's talking to himself as
Gobby.
It's so iconic, you guys.
It's insane.
I think sort of an unsung badguy...

(31:19):
that i love to hate because themovie's so bananas is from
billboard dad the art yeah theassistant the only person of
color in that entire movie thatthey make evil and he's like
fake english he's a good bad guyhe is a good bad guy he's not as
good as paul walker paul walkeris very bad oh also the like
evil creepy guy from when inrome they're like evil boss oh

(31:42):
yeah i lost that movie outcreepy um okay best style this
one was easy mary kate nash imean excuse me not and ashley i
hate to say i hate to do it tomiss underrated ashley oh no
mary kate olsen was who wassubmitted the most for best
style mary jane watson wasnumber two in terms of who you
guys said had honestly andrespect on her name because she
is not in the second one so muchbut the other ones she's really

(32:05):
looking good i do think that youguys are really not giving
ashley her due she's pulling outlook after look i do not think
she's the worst dress go backand watch passport paris she's
just not worse dressed than maryk you guys yeah but i think
people were I remember that likeMK it was she was very much
fashion girly that's because youguys are you guys we were all

(32:27):
taught to hate pink and itreally has come back to bite
Ashley in the butt I think MJWatson has good style for sure I
actually low-key love KirstenDunst style in Crazy Beautiful
where she's just like slutty anddrunk the whole time I love that
you're like I knew you weregonna say that I'm like okay
Connor loves that movie she'snever wearing a bra she's in a

(32:49):
crop top the whole time she hasher like tomboy haircut that
makes her just like so muchcooler than you because she's
brave enough to chop it all offI also think that we really need
to talk about her style inElizabethtown because while it's
not my favorite it's so of thatera so of the moment with the
red beanie and then that dressshe wears Yeah.
I mean, it's such a good dresswhere she's like, I refuse to be

(33:11):
let down by this dress again.
I love that

SPEAKER_05 (33:14):
movie.

SPEAKER_03 (33:15):
So those are my best style.
I do want to say hilariousanswers that we got a couple
honorable mentions.
One, Landon Carter in his puffervest.
Actually, yeah.
Landon Carter's styling from AWalk to Remember is maybe my
favorite styling across all ofthe movies, hands down,
especially for boys.
He looks so good in every singlescene.
Oh, yeah.

(33:35):
It's insane.
And he's wearing a t-shirt.
It's shocking.
It's insane.
No, no, no.
Yeah, it looks amazing.
I remembered, I just rememberedmy fashion icon is, this is like
an unsung one, but Claire fromBoys and Girls when she wears
the white clubbing outfit.
Oh, yeah.
And also just in general.
You love that look.
Yeah, because it's lace.
That woman is beautiful.
It lays down.
But also, like, even the, like, little orange, like...

(33:58):
Every single look is likeperfect Y2K.
She looks great.
Yeah, it's pretty bananas.
Okay, also a hilarious commentwe got for best style was all
caps, not Julia Stiles in herart teacher outfit.
Real heads will know that wewent like mega viral.
It's like 2 million views, 3million views or something for
our takedown of Julia Stileslook in down to you.

(34:22):
Okay, so just to address thatvideo quickly.
Because the controversy thatwent down in the comments for a
second...
Yeah, some of you guys areMormons, and that's okay.
Yeah, like, grow up, you guys.
Like, okay, the floor-lengthskirt, I'm not mad at.
I'll wear a maxi skirt.
I appreciate that it was the90s.

(34:43):
She was dressed like a person inher 60s.
She's 19 in that movie.
Julia Stiles is obviouslystunningly beautiful, and you'll
notice we never, ever, ever sayanything to the contrary about
that.
This is a podcast where we arecritiquing...
the creative choices made by thepeople who made the movie and
someone dressed her someonestyled her and they did a bad

(35:07):
job it's so not about juliastyles it's about fashion like
it's about like heaviness offabric and color and like
putting things together and likei truly believe in any year it
would have been crazy and i alsofeel like most of you were also
on our side oh yeah no Iactually I do it is important to

(35:30):
say that literally hundreds ofyou are like this take is
correct and hilarious it'sactually objective yeah it is
objective she looks whack umokay so finally this is the one
you guys want to know we're notgoing to make any announcements
we're pretty sure we know whatwe're doing next but we are like
taking a temperature check whoshould we do next number one

(35:50):
overwhelmingly that you guyssubmitted is Hillary Duff number
two is Lindsay Lohan this makesperfect sense make perfect sense
yeah you It falls right in linewith the content that we've been
making.
Julia Stiles was also submitteda lot, as was Zac Efron.
These all four of these people, transparently, we've talked
about doing.
Yeah.
There's no one on the list thatyou guys submitted that we
haven't been like, we haven'talso thought about.

(36:11):
And we almost certainly willcover everyone you guys
submitted eventually.
But we do have like a map out ofwho we're going to do.
We're not going to tell you inthis episode.
An honorable mention I didn'texpect was Leonardo DiCaprio.
Oh.
And then someone, a latesubmitter that I have to shout
out because she felt bad shemissed the poll.
And what I want to say to her isyou never miss the poll, baby.

(36:34):
JTT, Jonathan Taylor Thomas.
I don't think there's enough JTTcontent out there.
Leonardo DiCaprio reallysurprises me.
That seems like very left field.
I understand in terms of likeheartthrobs, like obviously he
was the one.
And there's not a singleLeonardo DiCaprio movie that I
wouldn't watch again.
Like, let's do it I don't thinkwe're in a time where I'm a very

(36:56):
big current fan of him right nowI'm thinking after the LA cap at
the Jeff Bezos yacht weddingyeah I'm thinking I don't need
to talk about him that much I'mgood on him I love him as much
as you guys Romeo plus JulietTitanic was so formative for me
for sure Romeo plus Juliet yeahis like absolute insane work I
do think like we'll see when weget to the 100th episode like

(37:19):
maybe we'll start running out ofgirls to talk about but like I
mean the thing I want to sayabout this poll that stood out
to me that was like i can'tbelieve we haven't realized this
before about the peoplesuggested there is you guys are
going to know what i'm talkingabout in 2004 there was a vanity
fair cover that came out oh yeahfour of the people from our
headliners were on this coverthat is amanda bines mary-kate

(37:41):
olsen ashley olsen and mandymoore all four of them were on
the cover of this magazineAdditionally, Hilary Duff and
Lindsay Lohan were featured onthis magazine.
So I'm like, this is like theuniverse that we're in.
We could just literally gothrough one at a time.
Everyone on that cover.
I think Alexis Bledel is in it.

(38:01):
Evan Rachel Wood's in it.
Evan Rachel Wood is really not.
Well, she didn't really makelike she made like pretty dark
movies.
Yeah.
She was like just in 13.
Yeah.
I actually think I couldprobably go the rest of my life
and never watch 13 again.
Yeah.
I do think like it makes perfectsense because they made that
Vanity Fair cover because wewere having a moment and we are
making this podcast addressingthis moment.

SPEAKER_05 (38:24):
you

SPEAKER_03 (38:24):
know so it's like it like yeah I don't know if you
guys know this but they weremaking teen movies in the early
2000s I like remember when thatmagazine cover came out I
wouldn't be surprised if there'sa copy of it in Louisville
Kentucky to this day for sure Ijust think it's interesting that
it's like they really nailed itthey got it exactly right in
terms of what we would rememberabout the era and every one of

(38:44):
those girls so true yeah so trueum okay best takes you guys
submitted there was two thatwere my favorite the ones that I
figured were worth discussingone someone submitted in terms
of like because we're sayingwacky shit it's just a fly by
night it's stream ofconsciousness so someone's
favorite take everything thatthe Lisbon sisters did was in

(39:07):
the neighbor boys heads in thevirgin suicides which I think is
funny yeah I think I like thetheory.
I don't think necessarily themovie is positing it, but I do
think it makes it an interestingwatch to be like, well, how
would they know what the girlsare doing when they're not
there?
And the girls do behave markedlydifferent when they're with them
than when you're spying on themin their house.

(39:29):
It's true.
So I think it's a good theory.
And I do think like she makesmovies, Sofia Coppola makes
movies that are so light on likedialogue and context that you
can really...
theorize yeah so many differentthings that space yeah okay the
second theory that people lovethat we came up with was that in
she's all that Paul Walker isactually secretly in love with
Lainey this is not up for debateno absolutely I think that

(39:52):
subtext is actually just textagree it's obvious he's so angry
and violent the whole time withher it's giving Iago he
literally asked her to prom hedoes want her he literally asked
her to prom it's like to methat's like a non-negotiable I
love that you guys love that asa theory or like you hadn't
thought of it or what I'mcompletely convinced it's so
it's so it's so convincing myfavorite theory is that Olivia

(40:15):
is a lesbian oh from she's theman yeah I know she is that's
fact that's also canon it's inthe text for sure okay worst
takes my girl and she knows whoshe is because she comments on
every single like ourinteraction at this point like
you're an honorary just likesister of the pod mm-hmm She
said accurate, but hurtful.

(40:35):
Kirsten Dunst, baby teeth.
Here's what I want to say.
This is good.
This goes back to the JuliaStiles thing.
Kirsten Dunst, iconic, perfect, don't change a thing.
But she even has commented onlike, I'm going to like be, look
how I look.
I'm not going to go in and fixeverything.
I'm not going to like refuse toage.
Like I'd rather be aninteresting person with an
interesting face and abackground than like go in and

(40:57):
like be workshopped to look likeeveryone else.
I love that that's her vibe.
I love that.
she has her real ass teeth inthese movies and there's not a
veneer to be seen the comment iwas making in spider-man to
clarify is that we don't haveblockbuster actresses like this
anymore where you're on a fullclose-up inches from her face
and she has a real human teethin her mouth we just don't make

(41:20):
movies like that you don't seeit the same way you used to
that's what i'm commenting onnot that there's anything wrong
with kirsten dunst's baby teethno it's like i love what the
comment actually is is that welove kirsten dunst's baby teeth
and we want more people to havebaby teeth more gaps like
remember when miley cyrus had agap you guys that's when we were

(41:41):
a country and now everything'sfalling apart whose fault do you
think that is not to blame it onher but i blame it on her
orthodontist industry actuallydoes have a lot to answer for
and they're taking icons from usyou guys it's i they're just
yeah absolutely so we love youyou know who you are who
submitted you we do deserve toget checked for like calling out
another woman like that, but itwas a greater cultural

(42:04):
commentary.
It was a positive, it was aloving noticing of her natural
beauty.
Someone else sent that Get OverIt was bad.
You'll notice we have notmentioned Get Over It a single
time yet in this 50th episode.
I don't feel like I thought GetOver It was bad.
I feel like I thought it wasfine.
I was like, it is bad, but notin a way where it's like I'm not
enjoying it.
You guys, Get Over It is not theworst movie I've watched for

(42:25):
this podcast.
No, it just isn't.
I had, it was fine.
I had fun.
Colin Hanks.
Yeah.
I liked all the like.
Shane West is in that movie.
Yeah, he is.
I enjoyed the like dreamsequences.
I feel like it was fine.
Did we say we hated it?
Yeah.
When?
The whole time.
Yeah, it's not good.
It's like, it doesn't, but it'snot Spider-Man 2.

(42:48):
We didn't make this movie sothat every movie would be
Spider-Man 2.
You guys are entitled to thinkthat Get Over It is like a movie
worthy of acclaim.
And people have wrong opinionsall the time, you guys.
Like we invite you.
let's let's was get over worsethan head over heels yes oh no
yeah head over heels is good noyou've you've forgotten you've

(43:09):
already forgotten that head overheels was shockingly bad shock
you guys head over heels is funas hell and it's about no it's
not we i thought it was fun ashell and then we re-watched it
and i was shocked and appalledat how crazy she is okay no The
main character is not a girl'sgirl, but all the other girls in
the movie are girl's girls.

(43:30):
And there is a lot of shit humorin that movie that I think they
can take right out.
She gets mounted by a dog.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
I knew you were going to bringthat up.
You're like obsessed with that.
It shocked me to my core.
But there is the other girls inthat movie, the models in that
movie are girlhood and they aregirl's girls.
And it's just like, it shouldhave been the main thing of the

(43:52):
movie.
And it wasn't because we justdidn't have the recipes.
We didn't have what we have nowbut I mean get over it was
whatever it's forgettable Inever need to talk about it
again I would say forgettableokay and lastly my favorite
because this is going to lead usinto our next segment but our
last worst take you guys tookbeef with is that the song in a
walk to remember is bad my onlyhope listen we need to get this

(44:14):
straight that she is so annoyingin singing that song where she's
like and I pray To be only yoursI pray And to be only yours.
I know now you're my only hope.
You're forgetting the worstpart, which is obviously the...

(44:35):
Oh no, the worst part for sureis the aggressive humming stare.
In his face.
Guys, it's silly as hell.
And it's like, she looks great.
Honestly, it's an iconic scene.
We all remember it.
We all remember the song wordfor word.
You'll never be able to take itsiconic status from it.
as a 30-year-old watching itwith fresh eyes.

(44:57):
It's silly.
Yeah.
This does lead us into our nextsegment.
Okay, we're going to talk aboutsome of the comments you guys
submitted.
If you recall, we asked you toemail us.
We asked you to DM us.
We asked you to comment anywhereyou could and it would reach us
and we were going to compilesome of the things we want to
talk about.
So that's what we've done.
And the first thing I reallywant to address, and I think

(45:20):
it's connected to some of ourbest and worst takes, some of
the takes that you guys tookissue with.
I feel like maybe some of thepeople that were mad about the
Julia Stiles outfit yeah alsodidn't enjoy this episode as
much about that walk you can'tforget our third episode of this
season someone wrote to us andsaid I have loved the pod from
day one but to be honest thereligious hate in this episode

(45:42):
was a lot you guys are entitledto your opinions I'm aware I
don't have to listen but thiswas such a big movie from my
childhood I really wanted tolisten to this episode I'm just
giving feedback Here's what I'llsay to you, madam.
You are so sweet, so entitled tothat take for you to write that
like you love us and you knowyou don't have to listen, but

(46:03):
you just want to give it.
Please send us that feedback.
We are not offending us at all.
We hope we haven't offended you.
We thought it was downrightadorable that you were like.
I'm sorry.
I have a little feedback thatyou might not like.
I don't like it.
I love this comment.
I like I'm not even calling it acall out.
I'm calling it a shout out to myfavorite commenter.
We're talking shit and we wantyou to be able to talk shit

(46:25):
back.
And we love to hear the shit youtalk.
Like, please send it to us.
Thank you so much for leavingthis comment.
And thank you so much forlistening.
Yeah.
And just to address some of thereligious stuff like.
We aren't religious people.
That's my personal perspectiveon organized religion.
I put left it all on the court.
And that's where it is for me.

(46:46):
I feel like no offense is evermeant.
We are not religious people.
And so any comments made aboutreligion are made with the
attitude of like, it not beingvery serious to us yeah we don't
mean it very serious we lovethat you listen and we love that
you respond and we hope youcontinue to do so I stand behind
the takes and I hope you feellike you stand behind your takes

(47:07):
and I love that we can cometogether about it last thing on
this religion thing there were acouple comments that really did
get our goat that were just toohilarious someone called Contra
Posto wrote I personally lovethe religious hate just giving
feedback which guys there's roomfor everybody yeah all are

(47:27):
welcome another comment on thatwalk you can't forget that I
absolutely love and we have totalk about someone wrote insane
opening line and I didn'tremember what we said for the
opening line and I went back andlistened to it and it is me
lamenting that it is in fact sadthat Mandy Moore dies that was a
comment we truly loved also Iwant to give a shout out to

(47:48):
Contra Paso who has left severalcomments and each one is a
delight thank you so much forlistening over the season We
love to hear from you, girl.
Someone commented also on A Walkto Remember that this is the
first Nicholas Sparks movie theyremembered, but something called
Message in a Bottle was actuallythe first one to get turned into
a movie.
I've never heard of that one.
Never heard of it.

(48:09):
Maybe we'll watch it for thePatreon.
If you go back and listen to thesecond thoughts from that time,
we did talk about the otherNicholas Sparks movies that we
watched and that came out andwere important.
I don't know anything aboutMessage in a Bottle except that
it's a Taylor Swift vault track.
Amanda Burchette wants to knowyou don't know drive by incubus
and okay this is actuallysomething I get from a lot of my

(48:31):
friends when we do contextcorner at the beginning and I'll
be like I've never heard thissong before and I'll get a
straight up direct text messageto my phone that's like bitch
where were you how do you notknow this song I'm with you I
actually can't believe we goback through the like billboard
top 100 and I have never heardof songs that were like from my
childhood I think that'sactually insane and wacky but it

(48:51):
does happen all the time youdon't know drive by incubus to
this day, Amanda.
I still don't know Drive byIncubus.
Samantha Motz wrote us aboutElizabethtown.
I don't know exactly what shemeans here, but I'm going to
read it because it's veryrelatable to me.
She wrote, I've always lovedthis movie.
While it was being filmed, I wasin my first year of college in a
whole different town with nobodythat I knew.

(49:13):
This movie always made me lookforward to visiting my family
and going home.
Knowing they were in Louisvillewhere I was made me feel so
cool.
So I don't know if she maybewent to UofL and went to college
in Louisville or if she meansthat her family was from
Louisville and she was away atcollege and she looked forward
to coming home.
I think she went to school inLouisville.
She could have gone toBellarmine.
Yeah.
But it says...
this movie always made me lookforward to visiting my family

(49:36):
and going home, which makes itseem like maybe she's from
Louisville.
Maybe she's from Elizabeth town.
Oh yeah.
Who knows?
We don't know, but this is veryrelatable for us.
That's why we love this movie somuch too.
Completely.
Um, okay.
About sucks to be Spidey.
A little correction.
Also, we don't do very muchresearch and we sometimes are

(49:56):
wrong about the names we say orwhatever.
Cause like truly who cares?
Someone wrote, Hey ladies, I'mnot sure someone else has told
you already but just in casethey didn't, that was how sparks
in the elevator and Superman, not Michael Ian black.
That's an important correction.
It is how sparks and not MichaelIan black in the elevator in
that scene.
And the reason I confused thatis because they were in fact
both on a very popular TV showcalled, I love the decades.

(50:19):
I love the odds.
Um, they were also on best weekever where it was like recapping
popular culture or whatever, which was like that kind of
content is literally, wecouldn't be making this show
without that kind of content.
It was like the Genesis of likeeverything I love to like talk
about what I like every episodeof those.
That's why I confuse them.
But she is right.
That is a correction that'sworth making.

(50:42):
We have another correction fromSister Time Sadness from Kelly
Finch.
And she really humbled us whenshe reminded us that it was, in
fact, Robin Wright and not DarylHannah.
who plays Jenny in Forrest Gump.
Yeah, and I just mixed them upand that's the truth.
I just got it wrong.
Also, this is interesting.
Jay and I were talking aboutthis about Spider-Man.
Someone pointed out to us, youmentioned Mary Jane's astronaut

(51:05):
fiance leaping as far as he did.
The reason is that the characterin the comics eventually becomes
Man-Woof, which I think Raimiwould have explored if he had
kept going with the franchise.
We don't remember talking aboutthis.
I'm sure we noticed it and itwas like, okay, crazy.
But that is actually a veryinteresting fact and it does
give context for that littlescene.
Love that for you guys.

(51:26):
Yeah, and I do think, like, thank you so much for writing
in.
I'm going to continue to onlyremember that he's Elijah in the
Vampire Diaries.
Angel Gilchrist wrote us aboutUndercover Down Under, which is
the Our Lips Are Sealed episode,to let us know that wallabies
are baby kangaroos.
And to that, I would like to seeher credentials.
Yeah, I know.
I actually prove it.

(51:47):
Because I don't believe her.
Sorry, Angel.
Love you.
Thanks for the comment.
Okay.
This is our girl Contra Passoagain.
The way that I feel seen in thismoment, this is I was dying on
this hill and Jay could not gowith me.
There is a context corner inBring It On where the movie, the
Destiny's Child song Jumpin'Jumpin' is in the top 10 for the

(52:10):
context corner of that episode.
And I posited that that is aHalloween song.
And Contrapasso agrees with me.
Jumpin' Dungeon is such aHalloween song.
Laughing face emoji.
Thank God.
I'm seen.
I'm understood.
She also, in talking aboutScooby-Doo, we went on a rant
about she I'm saying she it maynot be a she they they also um

(52:33):
we I guess we went on a JKRowling rant she says the
chokehold Harry Potter has amillennials is absolutely nuts
omg fuck that lady and to that Isay yep 100% fuck that lady yeah
100% fuck that lady yeah thething about this comment that is
that I would like to address umcontrapasso we are millennials

(52:54):
yeah that must be obvious by thecontent to be clear we are
millennials and I yeah okaythat's it on comment o'clock you
guys thank you so much forwriting us we love engaging
absolutely the funnest part ofthis is like what the fuck
people have to say back to us umokay I'm too amped to get into

(53:14):
this next segment because we'regonna do some trivia and like we
have both separately preparedquestions I'm so stoked I had so
much fun coming I have sixquestions about dialogue, but
mine are the first two seasonsand you're the last two.
So should I go first?
Yeah, you go first.
Okay.
Okay.
Okay.
So Jordan, I'm so excited.
I was like writing triviaquestions.

(53:34):
Okay.
Okay.
Okay.
Jordan.
Yeah.
I love.
And you guys play along to sayit out loud.
You might know the answer.
You probably know the answer, especially when you give you
guys.
Yeah.
Okay.
Jordan.
Yeah.
In winning London, James, playedby Jesse Spencer, helps Chloe
out of a bind when she getstoilet paper stuck to the bottom

(53:55):
of her shoe.
The result of discreetly savingher teammate Dylan from certain
humiliation.
He says to her, I've got a footon it.
You might want to check yourshoes next time before you leave
the loo.
To which she responds, loo who?
James then lists three differentways to reference the restroom.
The loo is only one of them.
Name the other two.

(54:15):
The toilet?
The WC?
The washroom?
That's right! Yeah! I do notremember that from the movie.
James literally says the WC, theloo, the toilet.
You got it right! Oh my god, that was really good.
Okay, here we go.
Number two.
There is a line that isdelivered to camera in two
movies that are set in seeminglyseparate universes.

(54:37):
Both times, the line isdelivered by Ashley Olsen.
First, in Our Lips Are Sealed, and then again in Winning
London.
What is the line?
Oh, my God.
I can give you a hint.
Oh, wait.
Okay, give me a second, and thenI am going to.
Okay.
It's something about, like, notspeaking the same language.
Okay, what's the hint?

(54:58):
It's about, it starts with, Iknow, I know.
But he's so cute.
Oh my God.
I reckon Ashley's season is thebest season.
It is the best season.
Okay.
You're going to know this onebecause I harp on this so much.
And you mentioned it earlierabout bullying.
In Passport to Paris, Ashley isattempting to teach her crush,

(55:19):
Jean, English.
She tells him to repeat afterher.
What is the phrase she has himrecite?
um something about that thatgeek is a total freak show so
close that dweeb is a totalfreak show i always harp on that
because i'm like it's themeanest thing i've ever heard
i'm so close to saying dweebyou'll never know okay this

(55:41):
one's kind of hard it's similarto the other one okay in our
lips are sealed ashley againbreaks the fourth wall in a
scene where we learn that hersister mary kate has learned to
surf the school bully victoriaasks her since when does she
know how to surf What doesMary-Kate respond?
Since the last scene?
She says, since this scene,apparently.

UNKNOWN (56:04):
Oh, yeah.

SPEAKER_03 (56:04):
That's it.
I knew it was like a fourth wallbreak.
That movie is so wacky.
I know.
It's so wacky.
It's so good.
OK.
The next two are season twoFreddy Files questions.
Oh, OK.
There is a breakfast food thatis repeatedly mentioned in the
movie Down to You.
Yes, I know what it is.
Particularly in reference toSamuel Blair's character, Cyrus,

(56:25):
who laments that no one has donethis for her before.
To this day, neither of us cansay with 100% certainty whether
or not this breakfast foodserves as a double entendre in
the movie.
She asked Jim to what?
Make her pancakes.
Yes.
Make her pancakes.
Even saying it out loud makes itsound like it is a double
entendre.
We still don't know what itmeans.
It's like, I guess it's not asex thing.

(56:46):
Okay, and last Honestly, this ismy favorite one.
If you don't get this one, I'llbe stunned.
In the movie She's All That,Freddie Prinze Jr.''s character,
Zach, observes Lainey from acliffside after a long day at
the beach.
Oh, my God.
Beside him, his duplicitousfriend, Dean, played by
boyfriend of the pod, PaulWalker, comments on her body in
despicable but hilariouslyludicrous terms.

(57:08):
What does he say?
He calls them Bobos.
But check out the Bobos on SuperFreak.
Yes.
Yes, dude.
Yes.
If you guys could see Jaythinking, check out the Bobos on
Super Freak.
that is damn you got six out ofsix you needed a little help on

(57:32):
a couple of them but you got itwasn't that fun yeah that was so
my favorite fucking line maybefrom all the seasons check out
the bobos on super why would youever call them bobos it's so
good okay that was so fun i'mready for mine fun okay jay's
doing trivia from seasons threeand four it's not trivia i'm
just gonna name a quote and iwant you to name okay the movie

(57:53):
that it's from okay who said itokay okay I told you I'd move a
car if a cripple came.
Kirstie Alley says it in DropDead Corpse.
It's such a good one.
We have...
So I'm a little behind.
Who isn't?
Oh my God.

(58:14):
These are so good already.
It's Aunt May in the second...
spider-man movie spider-man too100 i love that all of our
quotes are like shit that weharped on in the episode okay um

(58:34):
that mother didn't kill anybodyshe hired a hitman oh no this
one's a trick that mother didn'tkill anybody she hired a hitman
it's it's not gonna be drop deadgorgeous i guess what is it i
don't know Do you want a hint?
Yeah.
It's not Drop Dead Gorgeous.
Okay.
Good hint.

(58:56):
It's from the Drop Dead Gorgeousseason.
Okay.
Kirsten Dunst.
I don't know.
What is it?
It's her mother in Bring It Ontalking about some mothers would
kill to get their daughters onthis squad.
Oh, yeah.
And her mother says, that motherdidn't kill anyone.
She hired a hitman.
That is a good trick one.
I bet I knew it was too obviousto be Drop Dead Gorgeous.
Okay.

(59:16):
You've already done better atthe trivia than me.
Okay.
We have...
Mom always says, don't ever eatnothing that can carry its house
around with it.
Who knows the last time it'sbeen cleaned?
That's drop-dead gorgeous.
Yeah, it is.
Yeah.
And then we have, I'm impossibleto forget, but I'm hard to
remember.
Oh, I love that line.
Elizabethtown.
My girl Claire in Elizabethtown.

(59:38):
We have...
I want to say Spider-Man, but Iguess it's not.
No.
Is it an Amanda Bynes movie?
It's not an Amanda Bynes movie, but it is Mandy Mania.
Mandy Moore.
Okay, Mandy Moore.

(59:59):
Is it Chasing Liberty?
No, it's not.
What is it?
It's Prince Philippe from thePrincess Diaries.
Oh my God.
One of my favorite openings fromany episode we do is us trying
to say Philippe Reynaldo.
Yeah.
Oh my God.
That's a really good line that Idon't remember from Princess
Diaries.
Okay, fun.
This is fun that they're hard.
Okay.

(01:00:19):
We have, if it wasn't this, it'dbe something else.
Oh, Elizabethtown.
I love that line, too.
It's so funny.
Okay.
And our last one is...
How come when I wanted to askEunice out, everyone made fun of
me, but then Sebastian likes herand suddenly she's cool.
Screw you guys.
I hate high school.
It's she's man.

(01:00:40):
I love that line.
It's so good.
I love that line.
It's so funny.
Oh my God.
That was so, so fun.
Jay prepared.
She did extra credit.
So she created the playlist, allcredit to Jordan for the 50th
episode playlist that's comingout.
Thank you.
It's called Second Listen.
You can find it on Spotify.
It's, I mean, guys, it'snostalgia.

(01:01:00):
It's like everything that youlove about these movies.
movies and music format and jayis going to play a few songs and
quiz me to see if i know wherethey are from and i feel certain
i'll be good at this but we'llwe're gonna learn we're gonna
find out um okay

SPEAKER_04 (01:01:18):
to kiss dreams can bring

SPEAKER_03 (01:01:33):
me this it's um get over it and that is the kirsten
dunst original composition yeahthat's katie singing you guys
she did a great job oh she's allthat this is she's all that Kiss

(01:02:00):
Me.
I mean, I need two chords, opening chords for that song.
You guys write in.
I know for a fact that this isin more than one movie that
we've watched, but I was goingthrough every single soundtrack
and I couldn't find the secondmovie that it was in.
So if you guys remember, pleasewrite in because it's actually
going to keep me awake at night.
Yeah.

UNKNOWN (01:02:20):
Yeah.

SPEAKER_03 (01:02:32):
Oh my God.
Okay.
It's definitely in CrazyBeautiful, but it's not just in
that.
Yep.
There's, it's another one.
And it was like also, is itElizabethtown?
No.
Wait, it's also Kirsten Dunstthough.
Yes, it is.
Okay.
So it's going to be Wimbledon.
Yep.

(01:02:53):
Oh my God.
I love Wimbledon.
And what's the song?
What's the song?
David Gray, This Year's Love.
This is an epic, epic, epic, epic, epic song.
For sure.
In both movies.
In both movies.
I mean, perfect montage song.
I, whew, that's a good one.
That's a good pull.
This is going to be a goodplaylist.

(01:03:32):
99 Red Balloons, this is from.
It's in Our Lips Are Sealed whenthey go to the abandoned
amusement park.
What a cool scene.
Do they do the original Germanor it's in English?
This song has both.
Oh, okay.
The original song's in German.
This song does like the firstverse in English.
That was a big song when it cameout.
It was huge.
Okay, here's a fun one.

(01:04:08):
Oh, it's Spider-Man for sure.
Is it the OG Spider-Man?
No.
it's uh vindicated i am selfishi am wrong i am right i swear
i'm white okay real heads willremember that we had it we had
it out on the podcast becauseit's like there's no way they
wrote this for the movie and jaywas totally right they wrote it

(01:04:28):
for the movie it's vindicated bydashboard confessional so good
okay um i have a couple morethis one is a big one so

SPEAKER_01 (01:04:41):
So brother, check it out now

SPEAKER_00 (01:04:54):
it's the

SPEAKER_03 (01:05:00):
foam party scene of boys and girls no it's not no
it's not there's a differentsong credited to that song what
is it um i mean it's also on theplaylist so you guys can check
it out but do you want to keepguessing wait that's from she's
all that the prom scene wherethey have the grenades but i i
thought we found out it was alsoin boys and girls it's not um i
mean they do sometimes changemusic between streaming and when

(01:05:24):
it's out but on the officialsoundtrack there's a different
song that is also on theplaylist um but it is in another
movie what it's in scooby-doo ohyeah yeah yeah yeah yeah keep
going keep going Definitelyseason one Mary-Kate and Ashley.

(01:05:58):
I'll give you a hint.
They are featured in the moviewhere this song plays.
It's play from Holiday in theSun.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, it is.
That is such a good track.
And I can picture Megan Fox,like, crossing the dance floor.
Because she only wants one thingthis summer.
Yeah.
Oh, my God.
So good.
I knew the lyrics immediately.
Yeah, you did.

(01:06:18):
I was really impressed.
Okay.
This is a good little sneak peekof the playlist.
There are so many fun songs, youguys.
I really had the time of mylife, but we'll end it on this
one.

SPEAKER_02 (01:06:39):
Soon as this is over, we'll go home.

SPEAKER_03 (01:06:46):
To

SPEAKER_02 (01:06:46):
plant the seeds of

SPEAKER_03 (01:06:48):
justness in our bones.
It's Elizabethtown, My Father'sGun.

SPEAKER_05 (01:06:52):
Such

SPEAKER_03 (01:06:53):
an iconic, such a good song.
And used impeccably in thismovie.
Truly, more than once.
Wow, that was so fun.
You guys, download the playlist.
Enjoy.
We had so much fun.
The music is so good from theera.
Honestly, Mary-Kate and Ashley,their vision.
They knew what they were doing.
Yeah, the songs are really good.

(01:07:13):
All right.
The next segment we were talkingabout, because this is like the
ultimate real goal, really islike discovering the messaging
and how...
you know how much it hurt orhelped us or whatever

SPEAKER_05 (01:07:25):
yeah

SPEAKER_03 (01:07:26):
so we were talking about movies to show our
daughters yeah the nextgeneration of women what from
the list what from each seasonwould be worth it yeah I do
think like we the originalimpetus of the entire podcast
right was like We watched thesemovies before our brains were
fully formed.
They had messages.
They communicated those messagesto us that we then carried into
our adult life that we may notbe conscious of until we rewatch

(01:07:50):
and we dissect.
So in thinking about thiscategory, it's like, what
messages do I actually co-signand would pass on?
And what messages am I...
truly trying to shield mydaughter from my hypothetical
daughter I would show mydaughter our lips are sealed
because they defeat a bad guythere's a lot of agency in that

(01:08:13):
yeah they also like discoverthat it's like not important to
be popular and that real friendsmatter I love that movie so much
also winning London where theyhave like a real goal and they
work together and they sort oflike have to noodle it out in a
non-traditional way in order towin yeah and there's like
there's really, really goodsister moments in that movie
too.

(01:08:33):
I love Winning London.
What about you for season one?
I love Our Lips Are Sealed and Ido feel like I would show it to
my daughter just because it's sowacky and it is so fun.
Yeah.
But when I think of like raisinglike a cool daughter, like
Passport to Paris, I feel likewas so fun to watch and so good
to see like their mind shiftchange from like a small world

(01:08:54):
to a big world.
And there are some things aboutlike, we've gone over it in the
episode and you can go back andlisten about like some light
bullying, but I feel like thatwould maybe have a negative
impact but I love that theoverarching theme isn't romance
it really is about like growingup and being an independent
person and like discovering theworld for yourself and I would
want like a kid to have that theonly reason I didn't put it on

(01:09:14):
my list is it's like the thingthat they accomplish is finding
boyfriends and I think the othertwo movies yeah they do go to
the Louvre the other two moviesthey do something else in
addition to finding boyfriendsalthough let's be clear that is
always the main thing they'redoing Connor They don't just
find boyfriends.
They literally change French lawwith a dinner party.

(01:09:36):
You're so right.
You're so right.
Actually, it's going on.
They're diplomats.
But I do think.
The best three movies arePassport to Paris, Our Lips Are
Sealed, and Winning London.
I would not show my daughterBillboard Dad.
Me either.
Yeah, I really wouldn't.
You guys, the messaging andBillboard Dad.
I didn't have one from seasontwo that I thought deserved it.
I don't think I'm going to showthem She's All That.

(01:09:58):
I don't think I'm going to showthem Head Over Heels.
I don't think I'm showing...
I mean, sure, I guess.
I know you did Last Summer.
That's fine.
But it's like, Ryan Phillippe isso violent in that movie, and
there's so much just bad 90s umpositioning that it's like I
would probably just skip itthere's not like a real valuable
message I think to pull out ofone of them the Scooby-Doo

(01:10:20):
movies I just never want towatch again but I'm sure you
could show them to a kid I don'tknow yeah I the Scooby-Doo
movies are one of those movieswhere it's like that's movie for
adult dressed up like a movielike a kid which is not um which
I think is like you don't reallyneed to show your kid that I
kind of agree I'm like thinkingback on it now um Yeah, I know
you did last time.

(01:10:41):
Yeah, I don't think so.
There's not one from season two.
Sorry, Freddie.
We love you.
Summer catch.
Summer catcher cannot show achild.
Brittany Murphy in that poormovie.
Oh, my God.
Yeah, you're so right.
No, you couldn't show anybody.
The sexual assault of WilmaRomero.
Like, there's so much problem.
You couldn't.
Okay, season three, Strike.

(01:11:02):
I knew you were going to sayStrike.
All I want to do is girlhood ina movie.
It is, if you can believe it,it's coming up.
made the top five of my favoritemovies of all the movies we've
watched.
Yeah.
It's maybe just personal to me.
One of my faves ever.
It's so, so, so, so, so good.
You've got Rachel Lee Cook.
You've got Kirsten Dunst.
You've got Merritt Weaver.

(01:11:23):
Amazing in that movie.
Yeah.
You've got Gabby Hoffman.
Oh wait, is it Gabby Hoffman?
What's her name?
I think so.
Yeah.
But also just the message of themovie is about like taking
things into your own hands, carving out a path for yourself.
Leaning on your sisters, nottaking no for an answer when the
no is coming from the man.
Building community within thesisterhood.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
It's so good.
So good field hockey.

(01:11:44):
I mean, yeah, it's just great.
Yeah.
The virgin suicides.
I also think because of theconversations that we had in
that episode that to me were soenlightening about like the way
that the boys are jealous ofgirls internal lives and the
ways that they are mesmerized byall of the imagination of the
girls.
Like it does do this positioningof like the rich internal lives

(01:12:07):
of women is something to beenvied.
And I'd never thought about thatbefore.
I don't think from that movie,but I do think it's a takeaway
that I would show my kid andthen lastly I put Elizabethtown
because it's so special to meand it's so about our hometown I
would absolutely absolutely withwhatever problems you might find
in it that aren't perfect Iwould have to show it to my kid
yeah I think I would definitelyshow my kid Elizabethtown I feel

(01:12:29):
like the Sofia Coppola ones it'slike I don't need to show her
that I'm just gonna find it onher own the world's gonna be
pushing those yeah sure um sobut I agree I think
Elizabethtown moved me so muchand is like particularly special
to me so that's No.

(01:12:50):
Oh my God, Spider-Man 2.
I'd show my kid all theSpider-Man movies.
I guess it's like I wouldn't notshow them the Spider-Man movies.
It's just not one of the onesthat's like...
That's like about being a younggirl.
No, I totally agree.
And then season four, I wroteBig Fat Liar because I love
Amanda Bynes so much in it andshe's such a good character and
she has so much agency in thatmovie.
Yeah.
And Princess Diaries, you wouldhave to show your kid.

(01:13:13):
And then also, of course, She'sthe Man.
I think She's the Man...
is not perfect but I like thatshe tries out for the boys team
and she makes it and I like thatshe stays true to herself and
she's so funny funny I woulddefinitely show my kid um she's
the man I think it's so funnyshe's so good in it um and I do

(01:13:34):
think it has like yeah strongmessaging I would not show my
kid Big Fat Liar I don't thinkyeah I mean the funniest thing
about that movie is we watch itand we're like this movie
doesn't tell you that lying'sbad that's one truth I also
think How to Do is fine you canwatch it I think the moments
where Mandy Moore is a friend toher friend Scarlett are really
good for girls yeah for sure forsure and I think Allison Janney

(01:13:57):
is just like the only thing youshould expose your daughter to I
mean there are a lot of likegood movies on this list where
it's like I would be happy formy kid to watch them and it's
like and I'm really not even oneto be like my kid can only watch
the movies I co-sign it reallyis just like the messages that I
co-sign for young girls yeah forsure okay so so we're gonna do
All across all seasons are topfive movies.

(01:14:19):
And they're not like the bestfive, but they're my favorite.
Jordan's favorite.
I'm going to say from seasonone, Winning London.
Holds up.
I still love it.
I would watch it right now.
From season two, I Know What YouDid Last Summer is my favorite
one.
And then all of the ones fromKirsten Dunst.
Strike.

(01:14:39):
Bring It On, and She's the Manround out my top five.
But I have to say, honorablemention, Elizabethtown.
I was so close to knocking She'sthe Man for Elizabethtown.
Yeah.
Because it's just so personal tome.
Obviously, Princess Diaries isgreat.
A Walk to Remember was great.
Spider-Man 2 is great.
She's All That is great.
But personally, none of themknock Strike Off for me in terms

(01:15:00):
of girlhood.
I don't know.
I can't explain why I love thatmovie so much.
I didn't think I rememberedloving it so much.
Yeah.
But Miss Goddard's all the way.
Miss Goddard for life yeah forme I also did five top movies
and then five honorable mentionsyeah because that's not good
yeah I know we're related for methough I really thought of it as
like five movies that I wouldn'tgive back like that I am not

(01:15:22):
that I will be watching again soit's like it's a mix of top
quality and top like nostalgiafor me it's Our Lips Are Sealed
that I think is just the mostfun movie from that season to
watch Spider-Man 2 you guys knowhow I feel about it She's the
Man Impeccable Elizabethtown andthen drop dead gorgeous was so
funny yeah but i really feellike i was like i couldn't not

(01:15:45):
watch that movie again it was sofunny but i did want to do some
honorable mentions of moviesthat really surprised me these
are like not based on nostalgiathese are movies where i truly
was like i did not expect thisto be as good as i left the
episode thinking it was andthat's got to be summer catch
you've got to shout out summercatch i know you did last summer

(01:16:05):
and chasing liberty I reallythink was better than I
remembered it being passport toParis and the challenge oh my
god the challenge is on yourlist wow it was better than I
thought it was gonna be yeah itis good I love the challenge me
too okay and then biggesttakeaways we really wanted to
finish the episode just talkingabout some things that we
continue to revisit things thatalways come up as we watch takes

(01:16:27):
that we have that we keep comingback to because if you are to
look at the whole thing as anoverarching like era of our
childhood the fact that thesemessages continue to pop up
again and we continue to likeassess them and bump into them
is kind of the whole point yeahum so i'll let you start yeah um
i think one thing that is funnyhow often it's come up i never

(01:16:50):
would have expected it when westarted this podcast is how
often people are ininappropriate like workplace
relationships like hownormalized it was to meet
someone you were gonna like havea thing with yeah at work and
like the toxic work dynamics areat play in these relationships
in these movies like if youthink about the win in rome
where it's the ceo and then likehis personal assistant and they

(01:17:14):
fall in love and good for thembut like that's crazy commander
slander is the name of theepisode for wing commander and
she's his like fucking militaryboss which is like so messed up
but even just now in chasingliberty the two secret agents i
think it's worth noticing thatthey said this is how you'll

(01:17:35):
meet someone to fall in lovewith and there's no mention
whatsoever of how it could getyou in trouble or that it might
not be a good idea there justnever is it just is a totally
reasonable place there's thepart about being your boss but
there's also like an inherentunequal dynamic in men and women
in the workplace like men getpaid more men like women are
more likely to be fired likewomen are only very newly in the

(01:17:57):
workplace in the corporate lifeyou think about like since the
beginning of time and it's I dothink that it's something that
people are purposefully notlooking at or they didn't have
the vocabulary for when theywere making these movies because
that is present in every singleone of these relationships and
the movie every single one ofthe movies just acts like it

(01:18:17):
isn't I also think like if youneed any argument ever for like
how pervasive the whole me toothing is it's like look no
further than every single pieceof media telling you you should
hit on the girl that works foryou like The idea that there's a
single person out there thatdoes not believe that that kind
of culture is as pervasive as wesay it is literally has never

(01:18:38):
seen a single movie, has neverseen a movie made from the era
that we were watching movies aswe were kids because it is
inserted into every singlemovie.
It's really crazy.
Okay.
Also, another...
thing we keep bumping intoabsentee fathers in this movie
the casualness with which youactually just don't need them
that bad sometimes they're justtoo busy to perform fatherhood

(01:19:00):
it's no big deal we gotta letthem off the hook for that sort
of thing at the end of the dayyou can't really ever stay mad
or be mad princess diaries is abig egregious example what a
girl wants is also what a girlwants even though it's not
necessarily Colin Firth's faultbut even in so far as dad that

(01:19:21):
are present, but are so bad atbeing dads like in switching
goals and they have that one dadthat just doesn't fuck with
ashley at all yeah or inbillboard dad where it's like
he's so busy making art andbeing sad that we can really get
up to anything we want or evenin the challenge where they
parent trap them and they sendthem to do two different coasts

(01:19:42):
and one of the daughters justdoesn't see their other parent
ever yeah the idea the conceptof parent trap being like a
concept that we just accept thatsomeone would do neglect one of
their children and agree neverto to see them again as long as
I mean it's just insane yeah itcomes up again and again and
again for sure a big one there'sno diversity in any of these

(01:20:04):
movies we have just not I meanand something that Jay and I run
into a lot and we're open tofeedback and comments or
whatever like we said you don'tscare us we've talked about the
fact that when we go back andchoose headliners and we revisit
these movies from our childhoodit's always white actors yeah we
have we do do talk about how tofeature more diverse movies.

(01:20:27):
And we will.
And I think it's something youcan hold us to.
But it's worth pointing out,it's just such slim pickings in
terms of diversity from thisentire era of our childhood.
White actors, white maincharacters was really what you
got.
And even the whole season,Freddie Prinze Jr.
is Latino, but he- True.
In several of these movies, hehas white parents too, white

(01:20:49):
parents.
Yeah, for sure.
I mean, I do feel like when wefirst started the Mary-Kate and
Ashley season, we werecommenting that there wasn't a
lot of diversity.
And honestly, the more theseasons went on, the more it was
like just every single movie.
So it's like maybe we weren'tmentioning it as much, but it
really is every single movie.
And that's why we weren'tmentioning it.
I mean, I don't think you get ablack main character until our

(01:21:11):
second season with the second, the sequel to I Know What You
Did Last Summer when Brandishows up.
I don't think you have a singleblack main character in any
Mary-Kate and Ashley movie oreven person of color in any
Mary-Kate and Ashley movie.
Yeah.
Which is just...
Wild.
Yeah.
We're aware of it.
And we want to feature and focuson movies that are more

(01:21:34):
inclusive and more diverse.
And we're cooking.
And then.
the last kind of likeoverarching thing which is you
just already know what it'sgonna be slut shaming was a big
one for me it's just in everysingle movie there's a few
things it's just like about howwomen should behave really
there's a lot of conversationsabout food and fat phobia and

(01:21:55):
dieting and stuff that's to beexpected we could have a million
conversations till the end oftime about the body standards
beauty standards of the timeit's really still talk about it
now yeah 25 years later and thefear that some of those beauty
standards are coming back blahblah blah that's a conversation
that goes on forever but like asearly as the really long rant we

(01:22:18):
have from billboard dad abouthim having dinner with all the
types of women that rant that wehave to me is one of those
pervasive things about doingthis whole show yeah that it's
like constantly a man sittingacross from a woman and all the
types of women that women can beare wrong all of the way they
can be wrong all of the waysthey're not good that there's

(01:22:38):
actually very very very narrowneedle to thread yeah neat like
you know needle hole to threadabout how to get it exactly
right and that almost like aserved purpose of these movies
is to demonstrate for you allthe hundreds of thousands of
ways to get it wrong so that youcan avoid it and it shows up in
every single movie to me that islike one of the biggest things

(01:23:00):
that I do think we move awayfrom a little bit now that you
see more types of people onscreen I don't think we'll ever
get out from under it I thinkit'll always be an idyllic
universe where people are goingthis is how people should look
but I do think it's better and Ithink it makes me very very
cognizant and very aware of howbad it was when we were kids.
And I think it honestlymanifests still to this day all

(01:23:22):
of the time.
I'm 33 right now and very awareof all the ways that the
universe is telling me how Ishould be.
And the earliest versions andthe earliest examples of that
messaging is absolutely fromthese movies that we watch.
Yeah, I think one of thesharpest takes, Connor, on the
whole podcast is one that youmade where it was about, they

(01:23:46):
talk about women being fat, butthere are no fat women in these
movies.
So they're talking about verythin women and labeling them fat
and how confusing that is forkids for kids bring it on is a
really really egregious exampleyeah um yeah that they would not
show you an ugly woman becausethat as an audience would be so

(01:24:08):
impossible for our brains toprocess so they'll take a pretty
woman to talk about her likeshe's ugly like she's ugly and i
also think like in passport toparis there's a scene at the
very beginning where they are umlike in competition with another
lunch table for the attention ofthe to Homecoming and just the
way they talk about those girlsfor no reason other than they

(01:24:29):
are in a perceived competitionis really like emblematic of
kind of the way women wereexpected to interact with each
other and then there are movieson our lists that are
purposefully addressing that tolike present the opposite like
Strike but it is so pervasivethat the movies that do present
the opposite are like veryobvious about it yeah and

(01:24:50):
they're like we're doing a thinghere that you should actually
befriend women exactly and it'sand it is interesting to see how
like not obvious the competitionis laid in to the movies that
have it and then how obvious thesort of rebuttals have to be is
just so telling about the waywomen were being made to think
about each other as enemies likecompletely unconsciously yeah

(01:25:10):
and um it's shocking I do thinkit has to be said about
Mary-Kate and Ashley becauseit's the season it was our first
season it's the one people loveso much and keep coming back to
Mary-Kate and Ashley are neverset up in competition to each
other once there is no No moviewhere they compete for the same
guy.
Actually, that's not true.
And switching goals.
He likes Ashley and she pretendsto be Ashley to go out with him.

(01:25:32):
Okay, I see that, but I stand bythat they don't compete for him.
Yes, yeah, I agree.
There's no point where they'rein competition with each other
or one of them like secretly, there's like a duplicitous
thing.
I think that would have been avery obvious natural conflict
for someone to set up for twogirls that are identical.
I think, yeah.
And I think it's such a reliefthat at least we escaped that.

(01:25:53):
I totally agree.
I think it's great that that, that Mary-Kate and Ashley are
always on each other's side, except in the challenge, but But
even in the challenge, the pointof the movie is that they should
be.
Yeah.
They're better together.
They're better together.
And so are we.
So much better.
Better together.
OK.
Onward and upward.
We have the rest of season fourto do.

(01:26:13):
We will be announcing at the endof season four what season five
is going to be.
We're really excited.
I think I can reveal if Jay willlet me keep this an episode that
no one has guessed it.
Nobody has submitted and guessedwhat we're going to do for
season four.
You will not be disappointed.
You will be so stoked.
No, I'm really excited.
I will let you say that no onehas guessed it, but I will go a

(01:26:34):
step further and say one of youwas really close.
One of you was really close, yeah.
